On Saturday, 3 November Holy Family Catholic School will bring a slice of medieval life to Wanaka when the showgrounds will play host to iron-clad warriors clashing their long swords, knights on horseback displaying their skill-at-arms, period musicians and dancers, roving minstrels and special adaptations of Punch & Judy and St. George and the Dragon. You will be able to try your hand at archery with a long bow, get creative with chain maille, observe our resident blacksmith and see the mighty trebuchet storm the castle walls. Your budding knights can ride on a trusty steed, test their sword skills against a warrior and learn about armouring up and the role of the squire. Suitably inspired, they can then set off on a quest for a sugar confectionary equivalent of the Holy Grail.

For those more inclined to leisurely pursuits you can learn the intricacies of dressing a renaissance lady and how to dance like one, take a stroll around our artisans’ market, have your hair braided like a medieval maiden, your skin adorned with henna tattoos or learn the art of calligraphy from an expert in the field. To make the most of your medieval experience, we’d love you to come dressed in period costume. There will be a limited amount of children’s costumes available for sale on the day. Whether you are a seasoned re-enactor or looking for a unique and fun day out for the family, the Wanaka Medieval Festival has something for you.

Sergeant Richard Stephen Cotter of the 4th (Otago) Company, 2nd Battalion, Otago Infantry Regiment, NZEF, died of wounds on 24th October 1918, aged 24. He is buried at the Delsaux Farm Cemetery, Beugny, near Bapaume, France. Richard Stephen Cotter is the uncle of Dick Cotter of Myra Street, Lake Hawea. A great-uncle, great-great-uncle, and great-great-great uncle of the families in Lake Hawea, in Plymouth and London, England, and in Invercargill, Dunedin, Timaru and Sydney.

He was the son of Thomas James and Jemima Cotter (nee Hamilton), and the eldest of twelve children, and born in Arrowtown. He was wounded during the fighting of the Second Battalion (Otago’s) push over the crest of the ridge west of Salesches. This village is close to the famous town of Les Quesnoy. The commemoration service will be held on Wednesday 24th October, at 6pm, at the ANZAC Peninsula on the Lake Hawea Dam. We welcome all of the Cotter families, relatives, and members of the public, to attend the commemoration.

Jack Brewer was diagnosed in mid-2016 with Pilocytic Astrocytoma and the family spent valuable time at Ronald McDonald House whilst he received treatment. Jacks father, James Brewer is an ultramarathon runner and will be running the Old Ghost Trail in February 2019 with the aim of raising $10,000 for Ronald McDonald House.

Both Jack and Ruby attended Montessori and Managing Teacher Anne-Marie Love saw this as an opportunity to support a very worthy facility. “You hope this is a place you will never have to stay in with your children, however if you find yourself in this situation you couldn’t wish for a more comfortable, respectful and special environment.� Ronald McDonald House is run on donations and the generosity of everyday people.

It has been a reasonably busy week for your Wanaka Police comprising of the usual business that keeps us occupied, as well as a lot of work going on behind the scenes. Diligent staff are doing the hard yakka to make felons accountable for their behaviour. This past week saw two calls for service that related to mental health situations. Police are by no means experts in these EXW ZH GR RXU EHVW WR KHOS ¿QG D VROXWLRQ RU PDNH FRQWDFW with those who can. Talk to those close to you if you think you need it, or try one of the many mental health or support services available. $ GLVTXDOL¿HG GULYHU ZDV QDEEHG GULYLQJ WKLV ZHHN +H IDFHV court action for his decision to get behind the wheel, as well as a ticket coming to a mailbox near him for having the all too common inability to abide by the speed limit. Three drink drivers were caught this week. Two of them receive tickets for $250. They also lose half of their 100 demerit points. The other driver was as close to the limit as you can be, so faces neither a ticket or court action, but was told to have a drink or two less next time. – It’s not worth the risk. A reminder to those purchasing goods and services using online sites: Please carry out your full due diligence before handing over any money. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Ensure everything is in order by doing some research on the seller and seek advice if you aren’t sure. Too often these incidents get brought to Police attention after the fact and good people lose out after being scammed. Also this week, somebody decided they’d take off from a shop without paying for their pie. This same person also allegedly poured a drink over somebody at a local watering hole. Don’t do silly things like this. It’s technically assault and you get arrested for it. Enquiries are ongoing. Excessive alcohol consumption reared its head over the weekend. You may have seen a number of people riding DURXQG RQ ELNHV RYHU WKH ZHHNHQG DV SDUW RI DQ XQRI¿FLDO HQG of season event. – Generally speaking those participating didn’t cause too much of a nuisance to the public but I’d expect some heads were worse for wear the next day from a combination of falls without helmets on and too much booze. There was a bit of a fracas at a local bar over the weekend where an individual sustained some serious injuries. Enquiries are ongoing into this matter. Enjoy the rest of your week and stay safe.
