An award winning documentary about a Kiwi icon – the late Celia Lashlie – is screening at Cinema Paradiso on September 19. The event is a fundraiser for the Upper Clutha Community House. Celia visited Wanaka around 2005 and spoke about raising boys to a packed audience in the Lake Wanaka Centre. Anyone who was at that talk will remember Celia – a charismatic advocate for social justice – probably best known for her landmark, “He’ll Be OK: Growing Gorgeous Boys into Good Men”. Celia was also passionate about the power and importance of mothers who she believed held the power to change the lives of at-risk families. The film’s director, former television journalist Amanda Millar, was a close friend of Celia’s and will answer audience questions at the screening.

Amanda said she has been a long-time supporter of the community house project. “Wanaka is my ‘go-to’ favourite place in the country. My parents, Jill and [the late] Dave retired to Wanaka in the early 2000s. My aunt, Devon Hotop and my sister, Penny Kirkland now also live in Wanaka, and our son Geordie Mansford is a ski instructor at Cardrona, so there are a lot of very powerful reasons for me to keep coming back.”

With more that 50 years working on and loving lakes, rivers and the ocean, I have found the most important thing about achieving the very best for our precious waterways is you, the grass roots community. Tapping into the wealth of observations and wisdom you bring far outweighs any other sources.

My gift to the lakes and the wider Wanaka community is ground truthed by a life time of experience and learnings about every aspect of looking after lakes and rivers - from the mountains to the sea (ki uta ki tai).

Together with Ngai Tahu (kaitiaki of our waterways), and the agencies, a win-win approach is guaranteed. Everyone wins, central and local government get their boxes ticked as do Iwi and the wider community.

LINK hosts free monthly “Connection Cafesâ€? – drop-in networking sessions open to all to discuss community issues and opportunities. A place where attendees can meet others, tap into our community database, and ask the LINK team about turning ideas into actions. Each CafĂŠ has a theme which is supported by a guest speaker – but majors on discussion and networking. We provide information and encourage collaboration among those working in similar spaces.

This month the Wanaka Town Centre Masterplan is the focus. QLDC representatives will explain the process and get your ideas. How do people think our town centre should look, feel, and function in the next 30 years? Parking, transport, shared spaces, how to keep the Upper Clutha special – these are all topics for discussion.
