The Festival of Colour 2019 programme is out now!

From 2-7 April, the Festival of Colour features world class theatre, dance, music, visual arts, and Aspiring Conversations right here in Wanaka.

Highlights include performances by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and New Zealand Dance Company, along with awardwinning New Zealand theatre productions.

Exclusive to Wanaka is a special pre-festival concert by baroque music superstar, Jordi Savall on Sunday 31 March – his only New Zealand concert on his world tour.

Rotating every odd-ear with Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow, we expect up to 15,000 people to attend our first show.

With over 50 acres of entertainment, Wheels at Wanaka, will be huge and fun for the whole family.

Tony Lewis, one of New Zealand's finest trombone players, who used to live in Wanaka, is looking forward to performing and catching up with friends while he is here and he brings with him, a band of top musicians who have a real love of jazz.

In the best tradition of New Orleans and Chicago jazz from the first half of the 20th Century, the River City Jazzmen provide a rich repertoire of authentic standards for their audiences.

Recent winners of the Christchurch battle of the jazz bands, they pay homage to the great instrumentalists

such as Sidney Bechet & Louis Armstrong as well as the English Trad giants the likes of Ball, Barber and Bilk. Just as easily they can change tack to swinging jazz standards from the big Band era. The River City Jazzmen bring a love of the 'authentic' and have an impressive following throughout New Zealand.

Primary School and Montessori Children’s House Wanaka. Plus, it’s not just the schools that benefit, the trail ride also donates $1 per entry fee to the local RSA. This epic and well-loved trail ride is made possible

by Deep Gully, Long Gully and Lindis Peak Station owners who kindly open their gates to motocross riders from all over the South Island. It’s what makes this event so unique, with stunning scenery not usually open to the public.

The Wanaka Trail Ride is now in its fifth year! Over that time many Wanaka ‘good sorts’ have been volunteering their valuable time to put this fantastic event together. Why? To raise money for Wanaka

The trail ride is on Saturday 30th March and online pre-registrations are now open on the Wanaka Trail Ride website, so make sure you register and book your spot!

Without the volunteers and supportive sponsors

this event would not happen, so the trail ride is on a volunteer hunt!

This week started with a three car crash at the intersection of Helwick and %URZQVWRQ 6WUHHWV UHVXOWLQJ LQ WKH RIIHQGLQJ GULYHU EHLQJ ¿QHG IRU IDLOLQJ to give way at a stop sign. The same day a vehicle was stolen from Albert Town and thanks to satellite tracking gear in the car it was located soon after.

On Wednesday last week a member of public reported seeing a driver deliberately ramming another vehicle twice. This appears to have been a civil matter getting out of hand. The out of town offender is to be spoken to and dealt with.

On Thursday evening Coastguard volunteers and Lake Wanaka users assisted in a search on the lake after a number of distress beacons were seen up the lake. This appears to have not been a distress matter and possibly just wasted good people’s time and resources. This could be an offence under the Maritime Transport Act 1994 if no one was actually in distress. That same night a male was ejected from a local bar and then decided to punch out a window. That ended with him needing medical attention in the middle of the night and will also see him getting some attention from the Queenstown District Court judge.

The weekend involved Police attending three motor vehicle crashes, one in the supermarket car park, one up the Cardrona Valley when a car side swiped another car and the third incident was reported at the station.

We also processed three drink drivers and also a nasty assault where the victim lost some teeth at a local bar. The offenders will be off to court soon.

With school going back recently, many domestic tourists have left town but we still have heaps of visitors around and their driving attracts many complaints. We do our best to locate the drivers and intervene in any driving which puts others and their passengers at risk. The main thing for our locals is to be aware that around every corner and over every rise there can be danger, we need to take our time and be patient which means we are not adding to the problem.

Two other areas which keep us busy are mental health and family harm incidents. These are never straight forward and we need our community to help to reduce the harm in these areas. We encourage you to contact us when you feel something is wrong or know that others are being harmed.

Funding is now available for community–based arts groups for performances, events and workshops that will provide a variety of opportunities for participation in those activities.

Any excuse will serve a tyrant Dear Messenger, I wish to relate to your readers a harrowing incident that occurred last Thursday 5th February and perhaps offer some humble advice.

My lovely wife, as is her custom, called in to do the weekly shop.

Barely out of her vehicle, a woman with the speed and demeanour of a greyhound leaving the starting gates; mouth rolling, eyes ablaze, sprung out of New World and launched a verbal tirade on my unsuspecting wife, questioning her suitability to use the disability parking facilities which are kindly supplied.

Overcome with the vitriol of the attack, my wife broke down in tears as she tried to explain to our self-appointed pillar of society and long term resident of Wanaka, the reasons she needed to use such a wonderful facility. Such was her distress; the ever vigilant Dianne of New World came outside and comforted her, leading her inside.

Not that you need to know, but to the Stasi pseudo parking wardens... My wife, unlike her husband, does not limp around town, but is fortunate in always looking beautiful and happy. However she has M.S., is still recovering from last year’s cancer of her breasts, its removal and reconstruction, as well as two major back surgeries. All this in less than twelve months. To add insult to injury her dear best friend’s son had died that morning.

Of course the self-appointed woman was not to know this.

Nevertheless, using cognitive function for a quick visual inspection before the tongue was engaged, would have revealed a mobility sticker on the ute and my wife’s prominent leg brace, surely signs of a possible disability to the discerning.

A ute you say, do cripples drive utes? Yes, I do and so does my wife (she had to sell her car to pay for some of her medical expenses). Do not worry; even well known, high ranking Wanaka Councillors have fallen into the same trap of judging the old red ute.

So there is my tale and if I may humbly offer some advice.

Never judge a book by its cover, be slow to pass judgement and instead offer to help people with their groceries and opening of their car doors.

On recounting this tale to me, I offered my still distraught wife, my late mother’s sage advice. ‘If someone is unpleasant to you, remember this very morning they may have run over their cat in their very own driveway’.

So to the self-appointed guardian of Wanaka’s parking woes, I hope your cat is better.
