Hawea Flat School are delighted to invite the whole community to our 4th Country Fair! Saturday 24th November from 10am-2pm.

We are raising money for a new hall for school and community use as we have outgrown our current one.

The school fair will be an opportunity for the community to see the first design and provide feedback.

The children are hard at work preparing home-made items for their stalls including beeswax wraps, bath bombs and funky Christmas presents.

We’re excited to report that the Candy floss fairy will be back, as well as Thomas the Tank Engine, and this time we’ll be Hobby Horsing as well! This new and competitive sport is sweeping across Europe and all you need is a hobby horse! We’ll have a bunch stabled up raring to go if you need one, and a judging panel will award ribbons and prizes for fastest, most stylish and best dressed! So, hop on your hobby horse, and ride into the school fair!!

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Get2Go Great Barrier, powered by Wanaka Written by: Raewyn Grant In just three weeks this team from Mt Aspiring College will be toughing it out on Great Barrier Island as they represent Mt Aspiring College at the National Get2Go Finals.

Winners of the Otago/Southland regional Get2Go Challenge in Queenstown, in term 3, they will travel over 1000 km by air and sea to the Hillary Outdoors Marine Centre on Great Barrier for the Get2Go Grand Finals, the week of 9th – 14th December.

A cross between the Amazing Race, Treasure Island and Survivor, the Get2Go Challenge incorporates land and water-based challenges including sailing, sea kayaking, overnight expedition race, orienteering, trail running, rope work and problem-solving. They will be pushing both their mental and physical skills to the limit over five days.

Making the most of Wanaka’s challenging river

and mountain terrain, the team have been training hard under the guidance of Wanaka’s experienced outdoor educator and guide Pete Simpson. They are a strong, focused, fit, competitive team and this is an opportunity of a lifetime experience for each of them.

Their first challenge, however, is to raise $15,000 for the team to “Get2Great Barrier”. Their timeline from qualifying to the event itself was just 8 weeks, leaving little time for traditional fundraisers.

Instead, they are asking their hometown, Wanaka, for their kind support by way of small donations. Whether it be $2, $20 or $200, every little bit will help them “Get2Great Barrier”.

Fundraiser party at The Rippon Hall – Welcome to Summer!

Written by: Jodie Rainsford The Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Wanaka Road Crash Rescue team are holding a fundraiser party THIS Saturday at The Rippon Hall! All funds will go to assist the Road Crash Rescue team travel to France next year to compete in the World Competition.

Around 30% of the Wanaka Fire Brigade’s call outs are to motor vehicle accidents in the area, so being skilled and efficient at extricating safely, and patient care is vital to ensure the best possible outcome for those unlucky enough to get into a serious car crash.

This group of volunteers need your help so come along and bring your friends.

Tickets are $40 and can be bought at Paper Plus or online via the Wanaka Road Crash team Facebook page. You will get some food and a drink on arrival from 6pm and there is going to be music from DJ Matty from 8pm.

Dress up theme is Round the World and fancy dress is encouraged! Bring your friends and come and celebrate the start of Summer at The Rippon Hall this Saturday.

The date for the event is yet to be confirmed, but owner Martin McKone says it will be sometime in October next year.

The event itself will be held over a distance of about 7km with 20-24 obstacles, with competitors

receiving a finishers medal, t-shirt and a cold drink as they cross the finish line and become a Wanaka Titan. A free adventure circuit for kids is also proposed, to make the event a family affair.

Again another busy week for Wanaka Police which started out attending a number of family harm disputes. Clarity in communication between these parties may assist them in remedying their disputes. Remember, it is not good for the children of our community to witness adults arguing.

Police executed a drug search warrant and charged a male with importation of drugs from the United Kingdom. It was great to have the support of New Zealand Customs and our colleagues in Queenstown CIB in leading this enquiry.

Police attended a motor vehicle collision on the Crown Range Road when a campervan went off the road in heavy torrential rain. Please remember to moderate your driving speed to the weather condition. Three other accidents on the Crown Range were dealt with by the Queenstown staff.

Another crash on the Crown Range resulting from fatigue was attended. If travelling from overseas ensure you are rested before driving away from the airport.

A local male was apprehended driving without a licence - if you have been GLVTXDOLÂżHG HQVXUH \RX UHDSSO\ IRU D OLFHQFH RQFH WKH GLVTXDOLÂżFDWLRQ SHULRG is over.

Three intoxicated motorists were apprehended this week. One on Friday with a level of 481 mgmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Saturday morning saw a local female apprehend for excess breath alcohol with a level of 1001 mgmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, over 4 times the legal limit. When she was located she was driving erratically after popping out to purchase some bread for breakfast. It may prove to be very expensive toast.

Our third intoxicated motorist of the week blew a level of 593mgmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. This was the second time this male has been apprehended, so hopefully he learns and makes it the last occasion.

Police dealt with an incident where a local taxi driver had alcohol poured on him by a customer, this incident also had elements of racial abuse. The young local has been dealt with by a warning thanks to the kindness and good grace of the victim. Our Taxi drivers provide an excellent service transporting many people to and from town, so treat them with the courtesy and respect they deserve. Remember this community should be proud of the diverse origins of its individual community members and never give racial abuse.

On Saturday police received a report of a burglary of an Aubrey Road address in Wanaka and another at Francis Lane, Hawea.

An emergency response was launched after Police dealt with a report of a male who was paddling down the Clutha River. Fortunately he was able to self-rescue and eventually re-joined his party which enable police to cancel the search.

It is the complainants 70th birthday on Sunday and he would like to live long enough to enjoy it with his family.
