Family Works Buddy programme is a one to one mentoring programme, matching young people aged 5 to 11 years with an adult volunteer. We have a waiting list of children across Central Otago, particularly boys, seeking a male role model. We are eager to hear from males and females who would like to make a positive difference in a young person’s life. The volunteers come from all walks of life and are of all ages – from people in their 20s through to their 70s. Adult Buddies do not need any special skills, just the motivation and a willingness to share common interests for 2-3 hours a week with a young person. Training, ongoing support, and supervision is provided

Introducing Wanaka’s new Community Sports Advisor Written by: Tiny Carruthers

I would like to take this chance to introduce myself to the Wanaka Basin community. My name is Tiny Carruthers and I am the new Community Sports Advisor. I work for Sport Central and will be based out of the Wanaka Recreation Centre. My role is to assist clubs with their needs whether that be resourcing coaches or developing capability and capacity in any way. Some clubs are needing new facilities and part of my role will be to liaise with all involved parties to achieve the best outcomes. After a lifetime of involvement in sport I eventually made sport my career. I started the Sport Clutha office, based in Balclutha for Sport Otago in 2007 and after seven years, I became the first Director of Sport at John McGlashan College, Dunedin. Both

jobs gave me an excellent opportunity to work with talented athletes and committed coaches and administrators. I’m proud of the way sport developed in both Clutha and John McGlashan and look forward to tackling the challenges that lie ahead for sport in the Wanaka Basin. There is an amazing array of talent, expertise and experience in this region. It’s exciting to think what may be possible if we work together. Marg and I are very excited about our move to paradise. Dear QLDC Councillors and Staff, Wanaka has a parking crisis! In the central business district there is only one formal designated no time limit parking area which is behind the Council office off Brownston St. For several years this parking area has been inadequate in size to cater for the needs of workers, customers and clients in the CBD. Recently the QLDC’s lease ran out in Reece Cres and a decision was made to bring the staff to the centre of town to create even more congestion. I questioned the wisdom of this decision and was assured by a Councillor that there would be a new carpark established at the top of Little St on Lismore Park and there would be no impact on the existing scarcity of parking down town. So, the first thing is Council’s contractor fences off 10 carparks and marks the ground with white paint where the temporary buildings are going to be and leaves it like that for several months. There are 5 more parks taken up as accessways. Then the staff arrive, and Council mark 9 parks as reserved for QLDC vehicles. This is just before Christmas and while the staff are away on holiday, they leave the vehicles in the parks as a long-term storage solution. Then it gets worse when staff arrive at work in their own cars and use public space, driving away in a QLDC vehicle, leaving a park empty marked reserved. Members of the business community in Wanaka work hard for what

There is absolutely no need to have QLDC staff taking up space in the CBD and to have 7 vehicles in reserved parking spaces on the 30th December when there is such high demand for parks shows a total lack of respect which I find astonishing. At the same time QLDC staff are issuing infringement notices to customers who park in 30-minute parks because they can’t find a longer term one to use. Commerce is about having a thriving CBD and shoppers being able to spend money as easily as possible at their leisure. Please think about your community.
