This year to celebrate the arrival of Spring, the Club will hold it’s Annual Spring Flower and Photographic Show on 27 September at the Presbyterian Church Hall on Tenby Street.
The Club’s ledgendary sales table will also be open from 2.30pm where veggie seedlings, manure teas, seeds, potted plants and home grown produce are to be found, all at knockdown prices.
The competition is not just open to Garden Club members, everyone in the Wanaka district is encouraged to enter their Spring blooms. Categories include Daffodils, Camellias, Rhododendrons and many other Spring flowers. For the more creative folk out there, the decorative category makes a welcome return to the schedule. This includes a class for beginners Class in a Glass and an open section - Evening Elegance.
Entries to all classes open at 9.30am and close at 11.30am. There is a $5 fee for all of your entries. The Judging will finish at 2.30pm when our doors will swing open for everyone to come along and take a look at the amazing displays of fragrant Spring flowers and photographs. Door admission $2.
There are two photography sections included in the show. Subjects for this year’s categories are Autumn Tones and Weather Moods. Get out your smart phones and print out those stunning long forgotten images and bring them along to the Presbyterian Church Hall on 27 September.

Lagarosiphon Control in the Riverside Storm Water Ponds Starting Monday 24 September, aquatic herbicide will be used to control lagarosiphon which is present in storm water ponds in the Riverside Reserve. Spraying will be completed on Monday, provided weather conditions are suitable. The area will be cordoned off as far as is practical and signage will be in place for the duration of the treatment and withholding period. We ask that dogs and people are kept out of the water while the treatment is being undertaken and for a 24 hour period following completion. The outlet from the ponds will be blocked during this time to prevent the water from entering the lower lagoon. MY COMMUNITY NEWS o m| vrbubm] oѴѴ;]; "| 7;m| u| _b0bঞom Written by: Murray Allan Mount Aspiring College Level 2 and 3 Visual Art students will be exhibiting their work in the Wanaka Fine Art Gallery, Helwick Street opening on Wednesday 19 September from 5.00pm– 7.00pm, and concluding at 3.00pm on Saturday 22 September. The work will encompass a range of graphic, paint, photographic, and digital media. “This is a wonderful opportunity to exhibit work in a commercial gallery space. To take students work
out of the school context and have it exhibited in a gallery, presents MAC’s art students with a real world experience and hopefully, reinforce the fact that their work is not out of place in a gallery context”, Murray Allen, Head of Art at the college noted. The images are digital inkjet copies of work that will form part of the student’s NCEA portfolios due in term four. The students have been working on their portfolios since mid-year and the work reflects their interests thematically, conceptually and technically.
Inkjet prints of all works are for sale for $60 (unframed) with 75% of the money going directly back to the students. Selling work gives the students a real life experience of what it is like to be a professional artist, their work not only has value in the exam context but can also be appreciated and valued in a wider context. Raising a Racket for Wanaka Junior Tennis Written by: Jeanette Hatten Wanaka Tennis Club is raising funds for junior tennis players who are in squads and benefit from extra lessons with club coaches. The money will also provide funding for travel away for tournaments. Over the last few years the club has produced junior players who have excelled at regional and national tournaments. Club captain Jeanette Hatten explains “We are organising a “Classic Lake Wanaka Tennis Weekend” from 26-28 October. The tennis will be played on Saturday morning and afternoon and Sunday morning on 6 private courts around Wanaka, that have been made available to us”. The competition will be graded and will involve men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Entries are limited to 48 people. Over the course of the weekend there will be a Friday night cocktail evening and registration on the Lady Pembroke (moored at the Wanaka Yacht Club), a Saturday night
barbecue dinner and demonstration tennis match (organised by the Club’s coach Perry Crockett) and Sunday lunch and prize giving in a beautiful Wanaka garden. Players will rotate around different venues for each of the three sessions.

The cost is $175, which includes the tennis and all 3 functions. Non-playing partners can attend the dinner and/or lunch for $20 for each event. Billeted accommodation is available for “out of town” visitors at $100 per double for 2 nights, with some beautiful homes being opened up for players including the Wanaka Haven Lodge. The weekend promises to be hugely enjoyable with some great tennis played in beautiful surroundings. Some of the junior players and their parents will be helping out at the courts providing morning and afternoon teas. Entries have been received from Wanaka and Queenstown players but more entries are needed to ensure the success of this initiative.

Mainly A Capella – Rippon Hall this Sunday Written by: Lindsey Schofield “Mainly A Capella” is a celebration of local music and singing in the delightful surrounds of Rippon Hall. The Treble Tones are a local all women a capella group that have been singing together in various formations since 2012. The group sing an eclectic mix from pop to world music and choral pieces in 3 and 4-part harmonies, and have organised this early Spring performance to showcase their new repertoire and to include some of the musical talent from Mount Aspiring College. Rippon Hall was chosen as the venue for its
stunning acoustics and of course the wines and view aren’t too shabby!
Williamson will preside as MC and may even read a poem or two to add to the mix.
The full programme includes Treble Tones, the MAC choir which is made up of approx. 40 singers in four parts, two year 11 students playing piano – Estelle Norman and Oliver Clements, and a newly formed Chamber Music group from MAC called ‘Up an Octave’ who will play a mixed repertoire of whatever classical music they can find in the cupboard in the music department!
Mainly A Capella takes place Sunday 23 September 4.00pm – 5.30pm at Rippon Hall. Tickets are $10 and on sale now at Pembroke Wines (cash only) – school age children free of charge. We encourage you to book your tickets early to avoid disappointment. There will be door sales if not sold out prior.

While it is good to see the change that comes with the season, there are some things that unfortunately have not changed with what your local men and women in blue deal with on a daily basis. A late night family harm incident between two individuals resulted in one of them being arrested for breaking property for which they will face the courts. There has been quite a bit of theft this week around the region. An individual is now without their ski jacket and pants. A young lad has lost his trusty steed after an abhorrent thief decided they liked the look of his bike and wanted it for themselves. We all know the joy that two wheels and a crank set bring to the young ones, so to whoever took it, please put it back where you “found” it. 25 road cones and associated signage have mysteriously vanished into the ether from near Kane Road in Hawea Flat. They’re all worth quite a bit of coin so again, could the individual(s) kindly bring them back to where they took them from. One creative miscreant has decided to delve into his artistic side by tainting somebody’s well-kept lawn with weed killer and the word “w**ker”. Their motivations for this dastardly act are unknown. $OFRKRO UHPDLQV D VLJQL¿FDQW IDFWRU WKDW NHHSV XV UDWKHU EXV\ 2Q WZR consecutive nights it has got the better of its consumers resulting in one gent facing court action for assaulting security staff, and another who went home with a formal Police warning for disorderly behaviour after he took exception to being denied entry into an establishment. Both men accepted their behaviour was not in line with a well-functioning society and were appreciative of the alcohol referrals Police made for them. Lastly, the scourge of our roads, ‘the drink driver’, made an appearance and was nabbed by Police. He was nearly 4 times over the legal limit and will face the courts. This behaviour does my head in and riles up my gears, more so than anything else, simply due to the unnecessary risk they put other innocent road users at. The last thing any of us needs is for our family, friends and members of our community to be a consequence and statistic of one of these dimwits and their decisions.
