CHALLENGE!

The inspiring and action-packed Challenge Wanaka is less than a month away and they are looking for volunteers to join their team. As a charitable trust, The Challenge Wanaka Sports Trust is dependent on the goodwill, knowledge, skills and valuable time of volunteers. Challenge Wanaka Half takes place on Saturday 16th February, with The Puzzling World Junior Challenge on Friday and the new intermediate event and Secondary Schools Otago Championships on Thursday, making for a busy triathlon festival. There are plenty of roles for volunteers with over 2,600 athletes and 10,000 spectators to host. The Challenge Wanaka team know volunteers are the heart and soul of the event and are currently on the look out for 500 amazing volunteers to help deliver this

exceptional event. As a volunteer, they will provide you with food and drink and will hold a big thank you party to celebrate your achievements and the Kiwi hospitality you have shown our visitors. Challenge Wanaka is an opportunity to make new friends and learn new skills. There are roles available to suit all ages and abilities on course around Wanaka, Hawea, Luggate and Race Central at Pembroke Park. Well I’m really hoping this weather settles. Wind and rain has been the status quo for the summer so far. I’m sure February and March will be stunning as usual. Around 1am on Wednesday morning two males were seen trying car door handles as they walked along a road in Albert Town. It is a reminder to all of us to make sure your cars are locked and valuables are removed. 6$5 ZHUH QRWL¿HG DQG FRQFHUQ ZDV UDLVHG ZKHQ WZR WUDPSHUV were overdue. It transpired that they were running slow due to an injury and they came out on their own thankfully. On Thursday night a male was seen on Camp Hill Road damaging signs and fences as he went. We dealt with a fraud where the victim was defrauded $62,000. Do QRW JLYH DQ\ GHWDLOV RXW RYHU WKH SKRQH XQWLO \RX KDYH FRQ¿UPHG LW is actually the bank you are talking to. In this case the victim acted quickly and all but $4000 was recovered. Another incident where a stolen Eftpos card was used for a spend up at a number of retailers in town, to the value of $120 via pay wave. Pop your card on hold as soon as possible when you know it is gone. Of note the staff working in the weekend stopped a lot of cars both in Wanaka and rural areas without a single drink driver located. Well done those who made good decisions after a few, or who decided to refrain from drinking so they could drive. We attended a low speed tractor collision with a barrier in the Hawea area. Possibly the most foolish job we attended was a group who were swimming in the lake between Beacon Point and Stevensons Arm. There was strong wind and chop and not likely to have been able to make it back to shore. A big shout out to the private boat operator who assisted by picking them up and taking them to shore. I don’t think the swimmers understood the gravity of their situation. Property is still coming in everyday. Please stop by if you have lost any items. Found property of interest this week: a petrol container, jewellery and still plenty of wallets/purses. Keep up the good work Wanaka, it’s not long until the school holidays are over.

An important message for young and old As Wanaka continues to be a desirable place to live and visit, there is no doubt that our climate, the lake and mountain views and our open spaces, are contributing to the growth. Unfortunately over the years, providing parking for the town by successive Councils, has not kept up with the growth, and today we have a situation all people, young and old alike, must be aware of. All reserves in our area, are required to be managed in accordance with the Reserves Act, and the reason for this message is for all people to be aware now, and in the future, of the reserves that are special areas for the people.

Plastic bag free Wanaka? I applaud New World’s decision to stop handing out single use plastic bags ahead of the nation wide ban. It would be even better if the single use plastic bag alternative offered was not... plastic! I noted on my last visit that the two alternatives offered were a ‘reusable’ heavy micron plastic bag for 15 cents, or a paper bag for 25 cents. It would be great if New World were to offer both options at the same price to encourage more people to avoid plastic, or even better - if they got rid of alll plastic bags at the checkout completely. I want to pass on my immense gratitude to the lovely students from Mount Aspiring College who come to the retirement village to spend time with us. The students are a breath of fresh air and this is truly the highlight of my month.

Creating permanent car parks on Crown land reserves, to satisfy a shortfall of parking spaces in the town, is not an option the Queenstown Lakes District Councils have.

Relay For Life is an inspiring non-competitive community event for people of all ages and fitness levels. At Relay For Life, we celebrate the lives of cancer survivors and carers, remember loved ones we have lost, and empower people and communities to fight back against cancer. Teams take part in a 24 hour walk/run relay while enjoying entertainment and activities. Because it’s a team event, people taking part may come and go as they like. But it’s so much fun, you’ll find it hard to leave!

WHO GETS INVOLVED? Relay For Life is a community event and everyone is welcome. Many businesses, schools and service groups enter teams each year. Relay For Life is a great way to support team-building and strengthen community networks. Family/whanau and friends enter teams, motivated by the chance to have fun and support the work of the Cancer Society.
