Volunteer for the Family Works Buddy Programme and become a mentor today!

The Family Works Buddy Programme contributes to the emotional and social well-being of children by matching them with carefully selected and trained adult volunteers in a well-supported mentoring relationship.

the opportunity to connect with different parts of the community, to learn new skills and to have some fun and laughter with a young person. Adult Buddies are all ages, and they have a range of interests and experiences to share.

The programme matches children aged 4 – 12 years with couples or individuals who share experiences, as they have fun together on a weekly basis doing no (or low) cost activities.

Prospective Buddy volunteers attend an initial training course which covers topics such as communication skills, guidelines and how to build a relationship with your Young Buddy. Ongoing support and supervision is given to all Adult Buddies.

The programme has been operating in Otago for 25 years and is focused on boosting children’s lives with friendship, fun, encouragement and positive attitudes. Buddy volunteers are quick to express the importance of the programme for them, the young person they support and the difference it makes. They talk about

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Win a $10,000 Spa Pool at the Wanaka A&P Show! The Wanaka A&P Show are excited to announce that they have gone electronic with their ticketing system for the 2018 Show. Event Manager Jane Stalker says “Due to the overwhelming success of the Show, and its continued growth we needed to review the entry system. The aim is to reduce the queues and make access into the show easier. We are thrilled as the new ticketing system will allow us to measure accurately visitor numbers and therefore assist with more comprehensive planning. In addition to this, the Home Industry team is now offering online entries through our website.”

Swim happens this Saturday at Waterfall Creek with the organisers hoping to hit 350 entrants, a nice little increase on last year. What has changed since the events inception in 2015 is the general amount of swimming and the distance people like to swim. As a non impact sport its ease on the body is inviting in its own way for the general enthusiast or the technique critical deal breaker for the competitive triathlete. Only a few years back an ironman length 3.8km distance such as The Big Ruby was considered a ‘long swim’, but with the bubbling rise in interest and the inclusion of the marathon 5km and 10km distances at the summer olympics, the call was out to offer something to push the south island OWS scene. The good spirited Christmas and New Year’s period seems a distant memory as Police have another busy week dealing with assaults, domestics and property theft. A vehicle was reported stolen after the owner left it in the Lake Front carpark near the Dinosaur Park last weekend. This vehicle is a Grey 1995 Nissan Pulsar with an RM Williams sticker on the back window. If anyone has spotted this vehicle please call police. A man was arrested and charged with assaulting a child. The home needs to be a place of safety for any young person and if this is not the case then we need to know. Steps have now been taken to ensure the safety of everyone involved and to help the family get back on track. We attended four other domestic related incidents during the week. Two burglaries resulted in a chain saw being taken from an address in Luggate and a child’s wallet containing $250 dollars of hard earnt money, taken from an Albert Town address. On Thursday a male was reported to have approached mostly females around town and has made some unusual requests. This man was located by Police and referred on for mental health intervention. One person was arrested for shoplifting at New World. Two non-injury vehicle crashes were attended. On Saturday an Australian visitor was set upon by three young males after he came to the aid of another tourist who was being racially abused at Puzzling World. Great work from the public has LGHQWL¿HG WKH RIIHQGHUV ZKR DUH IURP RXW RI WRZQ DQG WKH\ ZLOO EH held to account for this pointless act. Also on Saturday night, a car parked on Little Street had its wing mirror broken off and a motorcycle in the Dungarvon Street carpark was damaged to a point that it could no longer be ridden.
