Wanaka Artists Art Lovers Tuesday 31st July will see Wanaka artists and art lovers gathering in the Armstrong Room at the Lake Wanaka Centre to share their ideas on how they see art and artists supported in our region in the next 5 plus years. We’re looking for creative ideas to keep pace with what is needed now and into 2023.

We need you to tell us what you want and need before we can formulate a plan. This is your golden opportunity to come and share your ‘crystal ball ideas’ for the future within a small group format. We can’t do this without a show of support from local artists and art lovers to help us take the next steps.

With so many people now practising and exhibiting art on a regular basis there’s a growing need to harness these numbers and create one voice to attract national and international speakers to educate and inspire, to attract tutors for specialised workshops, to give artists more opportunities to display and sell their work, as well as gaining a foothold in a permanent facility, just for starters…

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Building of Community House to start next month generations of people representing the past, the present, and the future, “turning the first turf”. “We want to issue an open invitation to everyone who has been part of the journey so far and those who are interested, said Wanaka Community House Charitable Trust Chair Sukhi Turner. “This is getting so exciting.” Work will begin on building the Community House in August and a public blessing of the land is being held to celebrate this milestone. The blessing will take place at 11.30am on Sunday 29 July on the site next to the Anglican Church in McDougall Street. The ceremony will include three

A more sustainable Riverside Educare Written by: Lizzie Macfie It’s Plastic Free July and Riverside Educare is on a journey towards becoming more environmentally sustainable. Riverside Educare is a locally owned and operated early childhood education centre that aims to provide quality, authentic and meaningful early childhood education and care for children aged 0-6 years old. Centre Manager Lizzie Macfie said, “We have always been aware of environmental sustainability and the issues around the amount of rubbish we create, landfills, plastics and recycling within NZ. We have always recycled and tried to use less plastic, but have often felt we could be doing more…” The children at Riverside Educare are also very aware of the importance of recycling and looking after our environment… “We don’t want to throw them [plastic] in the sea because the animals will eat them”, Benji (4). “The turtle thought it [a plastic bag] was a jelly fish. It died. It was in Germany”, Caia (5). Along this journey we have discovered some things we can do that are even better than recycling,

buying new reusable bags and using recyclable/ compostable items. We can: REFUSE items that we don’t need. REUSE what we already have. REDUCE our consumption (use less). REPURPOSE something old into something new. So… we have been making our own reusable bags for children’s wet/dirty clothes by REUSING material we already have at Riverside and we are asking parents to REUSE or REPURPOSE a bag they have at home already to use as a ‘wet bag’. We are trying to REDUCE the amount of rubbish that we produce each week. We are looking into ways to REUSE our paper towels by composting them rather than throwing them in the rubbish bin. “Worms love compost so they can hide” Charlotte (4). We are REUSING material we have here at Riverside to make our own bees wax wraps. We are REFUSING single use plastic bags! Riverside Educare are also forever REPURPOSING old things into something new – containers, boxes, lids etc get turned into the most wonderful

art creations by the children! We will also be teaching the children about REDUCING their usage and to only take/use what you need. The aim is to get the children (and parents) involved as much as possible on this sustainable journey so that they understand the importance of looking after our environment (Papatuanuku). Hawea Community Charitable Dip Trust grants available Written by: Helen McCarthy Land on the Back Road at Hawea was donated by the McCarthy family several generations ago, to provide for local farmers in the area to plunge dip their sheep for lice, footrot, etc. hence the name “Dip Trust”. Early 1994 this land was sold by trustees for $50,000. A new trust was formed with 7 trustees nominated at a meeting in the Hawea Flat Hall, to administer the

proceeds from the sale of the land. Prior to the sale Mt Grand (Les Struthers) used the land and paid the rates as it was centred in the middle of his farm. It has since been resold. Numerous requests have been made over the 24 years for the purpose of charitable, cultural, educational and sporting grants. About $40,000 has been distributed to many worthy causes. In recent years a focus by the trust was to record Oral History of elderly folks from original

local families. This is kept at the Hawea Library for everyone to enjoy. If anyone would like to apply for a grant, send a letter explaining who they are, what it is for e.g. sport, why they would like funding assistance, how much is required, and any other relevant detail. During the week a person was disturbed on the roof of a house in Rata Street at about 8.30pm. It is very odd as the occupants were home at the time, it is unknown what this person was up to or what their intentions were and we’re fairly sure it wasn’t Santa Claus. A historic theft of an industrial sewing machine was reported during the week. About 2 years ago this sewing machine was stored in a shed behind Wanaka Marine, near Reece Crescent, but when the owner came to check on it he discovered it missing. Model - Unicorn H540 heavy duty, cream/white in colour with a formica top (same colour). The machine mounts into a purpose built table/frame that has castor wheels on it. There is a pedal operating foot at the bottom. This machine would stick out like a sore toe, so if you’ve seen it please let us know.
