Wanaka Primary School PTA are delighted to be once again hosting their school gala ‘Friday Night Lights’. This event will be held at the Wanaka Primary School Hall on Friday 7 September from 5.30–8.00pm. The gala provides an opportunity for students to showcase their creations, music, art and dance. There will be plenty for everyone to do from kids market stalls, Cheeky Fox photo booth, face painting, and creative activities for a gold coin, so bring along your pocket money. Make your way to the silent auction, there are some fantastic items to bid for donated by our generous local businesses. Come with an empty tummy so you can enjoy the delicious food on offer at the wide range of food stalls,

home baking and MenLove Berry Ice Creams for dessert. The entertainment doesn’t stop at the stage, wait for it – the Grand Finale. Outside the hall at 7.30pm Flair and Friends will perform a fire poi display – not to be missed! A night of lights wouldn’t be complete without a fireworks display from Dynamite Dave. Have your eyes to the sky at 7.45pm for this incredible finale. A huge thanks to major sponsor Northlake and all of the local businesses giving their support to help make this event happen.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Cycling Cambodia for Heart Kids New Zealand Written by: Cate Davis Pedalling across Cambodia to raise funds for the Central Otago Branch of Heart Kids NZ is worthy of a bit of sweat, and one that’s dear to the hearts of local women Sue Dunbar-Davis and Cate Davis. Cate is the Chairperson of the Heart Kids Central Otago division and with personal experience of being a heart kid herself, knows the value the charity brings to families of children with heart defects. When I was young there was no Heart Kids NZ. Every day I see families receiving support from the organisation and I can’t do enough to support and get behind Heart Kids NZ. Cate mentioned the bike ride for charity to her good friend Sue who immediately put her name down for the challenge. People are very generous and this is a cause that affects many New Zealanders and their families. The cycling duo leave for Cambodia

next March and will be biking anywhere from 35 – 80 km a day. Before they leave, they both have to raise $4,000 each and will join 16 others on the five day tour. Father and husband, Grant Davis, is proud of the girls’ decision and is 100 percent behind their efforts to take on the challenge. Cate has been through a lot, she has the ability to connect with young people and their families facing heart challenges through her own history and I am very pleased to see both Cate and Sue take on such a challenge. A fundraising quiz evening is being held at the Wanaka Bowling Club Rooms on Thursday 13 September 2018 at 7.00pm. Gunner William Archibald Fraser of the New Zealand Field Artillery, NZEF, was killed in action 3 September 1918, aged 24, near Haplincourt, France. He is buried at the Grevillers British Cemetery, Grevillers, Pas de Calais, France. William (known as Willie) Archibald Fraser was the son of Archie and Annabella (nee Urquhart) Fraser of Dingleburn Station. Willie’s mother died in 1899 whereupon Archie built a two room cottage for the boys at the

Urquhart farm. They attended the Hawea Flat School for some years until Archie remarried and they moved to Nelson. When Daniel William Fraser (known as Fraser) Urquhart was born in 1920, (Fraser was a first cousin of William Archibald), Willie’s stepmother requested that his name include William Fraser in his memory. This week the action hasn’t just been up at Cardrona. Police have dealt with plenty of unwanted action in and around town. A common theme in these incidents being wilful damage to people’s property. Below are some of the incidents we have attended this week: On Friday a jet boat hit a sand bar at speed in Homestead Bay, several people required medical attention. Thanks to Wanaka River Journeys and other members of the public for coming to the rescue who along with St Johns, got everyone to safety. A minor vehicle crash occurred outside Puzzling World. This is often a busy area and people need to stay alert for vehicles both entering and leaving the complex. On Sunday morning residents of Mt Iron Drive woke up to discover VRPHRQH KDG ZDONHG GRZQ WKHUH VWUHHW FDXVLQJ VLJQL¿FDQW GDPDJH to several vehicles and properties. A car tyre was slashed, windbreak fencing slashed and another vehicle sustained a deep scratch down one side. It’s quite a concern that someone was walking around our town with such an instrument, we would love to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything. On a positive note this has the neighbours talking and looking out for each other. Two males were spotted on CCTV walking to the back of BP to relieve themselves. Whilst waiting for his mate to zip it up one idiot decided to throw a large road cone against a vehicle causing a VLJQL¿FDQW GHQW :H NQRZ WKH LGHQWLW\ RI RQH PDOH DQG WKH RWKHU ZLOO soon be established. I suggest you come forward and have a chat before we knock on your front door. Police are often called when relationships are tested and incidents occur. We work closely with other agencies to ensure help is provided to the parties involved during these times.
