Wanaka Rotary Club president George Scott said the club visited LandSAR last year and heard about the need for the equipment, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It seemed like a nobrainer,â&#x20AC;? said George. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We all live here and like to play here, and the repeater will really help when search and rescue is needed.â&#x20AC;?

The repeater cost $3500 and will enable LandSAR to extend its communication capabilities when on missions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Communications are vital and this will help with one of our biggest problems,â&#x20AC;? said LANDSAR fundraising spokesperson Phil Melchior.

Wanaka LANDSAR receives approximately 50 call outs each year and is serviced by a team of volunteers which relies on community funding to operate.

The repeater is mobile and can be anchored atop a mountain receiving the signal from the main repeater on Roys Peak and extending it into the valleys where it is located.

The Rotary Club of Wanaka raises funds through volunteering activities which include the annual Book Sale, Duck Race, and working at the A&P Show and Warbirds Over Wanaka George said.

One drink driver was nabbed this week and they face the judgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gavel as a consequence for their decision to drink and drive. Please donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it. It is nothing short of idiotic and places innocent people at risk.

Three vehicle crashes tied us up this week for about 2.5 hours at each. Please take care when you are driving as all of these were preventable. Nobody expects to have a vehicle on their side of the road coming round a corner or have a vehicle suddenly pull out in front of them. Drive better. A drunk male was found inside some properties on Friday night. He was lost and had no criminal intent, just wanted to sleep. We all know Wanaka is a safe town but locking your doors helps prevent unwanted people entering.

Millennium Project Walkway It was my job as Community Programmes Coordinator for P the QLDC in Wanaka to organise th the Millennium Projects in the th ccommunity for Wanaka. I called a public meeting and from that came a suggestion fr from Pam Dobier to have a fr hopscotch made of concrete h blocks bearing brass plaques b ccontaining history of the last 22000 years. We developed the idea of a tiled history to be id incorporated with the planned in path along the lakefront. The p new version of the project n was to buy 2000 tiles, each w representing a year of the re millennium, with the most m important events of the world, im NZ and Wanaka to be recorded N on each tile. o T The committee needed to raise just on $39,000 for the ra project. Our budget included p the price of the tiles, sealer, th labour, firing, the opening la function including the hire of fu the Lake Wanaka Centre for the th opening afternoon tea, ribbon, o aadvertising and construction of the path. Funds were raised o from a grant of $10,000 from fr Lotteries, $5,000 from the Lo Community Trust of Otago, C $$1,000 from Pub Charity, $1,000 from the Regional Council and fr the remaining $21,500 was th raised by sponsorship. This was ra aan amazing effort and worked lilike this:- People would select a tile (or a year) from my list of important events, they would im then pay $100 for that tile and th have their name recorded on h it as the sponsor. Sponsors would choose a year of some w significance to them e.g the si

year they came to Wanaka. The response was amazing. Everyone wanted their name me on the path. Soon we had the he money, the list of history we wanted to record and next xt I called for 30 volunteers to write the information in black ck glaze on the tiles. The tiles were re then re-fired in mine and Joy oy Paterson’s kilns and stored on my verandah. Moira Fleming ng (ex headmistress) did the spellellcheck and before long the tiles es were ready to lay. We had to wait for Fulton Hogan to make ke the path and in the meantime me my house, including the tiles es on the verandah, was flooded. ed. All the tiles had to be washed ed by hand and the broken ones es replaced. The grand opening of the Millennium Project Walkway ay was held on 2 November er 2001 with Gavan Herlihy, MP Since then a few tiles have ve broken and have been replaced. ed. The path is very popular and nd is read every day by visitors, rs, tourists, school groups and nd friends and relations of the he sponsors. It is used as a quiz uiz for school children. I have had ad many enquiries about how it was made and people wanting ng to use our idea in other places es all over the world.
