Challenge Wanaka 2019 planning is well under way and changes to the event ensure that 2019 has a really exciting programme. After a successful inaugural half distance Pro event this year, this middle distance race has now become the Marquee event for Challenge Wanaka with the discontinuation of the full distance event. This means the event will be completed significantly earlier than previous years, with the last cyclists off the road by 3pm on the Saturday. Further development of the sold out Puzzling World Junior Challenge Wanaka sees the introduction of the Puzzling World Intermediate race for Years 7 & 8 to be held on Thursday morning of Festival week prior to the Secondary Schools event. This now provides the chance for the entire family to have a go; a legacy that Challenge Wanaka is extremely proud of. Challenge Wanaka is blown away by the fabulous community engagement and continued support the event gets from so many of Wanaka’s locals who enter,

uphold and generously volunteer time to making this event the success it is. As a major annual event, Challenge Wanaka understands its impact on an ever growing town. With feedback received from this community, the traffic management plan has evolved to meet the increased demands on the town over the main event day. As we get closer to the event, there will be strong messaging, more traffic management staff and notices to help ease traffic congestion at peak times. We do appreciate Wanaka’s ongoing support of the event. It’s not too late to enter, so why not give triathlon a go? It’s set to be a fabulous 2019 event and we would love to have you as a part of it. The Relay for Life is a community event where people celebrate those who have survived cancer, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and raise awareness to fight back against cancer. It is a festival style event where teams camp out and walk in relay style for 24 hours from 12.00pm. “We are thrilled to be holding a Relay here”, says Rachael Hart, CEO of the Cancer Society. “Relay brings together people of all ages, from families, schools, community groups, local businesses and sports teams.

Wanaka has a huge community spirit, and this will make the Relay for Life Wanaka a unique and special event.

The format is simple – 10 different sports over 10 weeks for teams of up to 10 people (including subs). Mixed teams are essential with at least two women out of six players on court at all times.

Previous sports have included volleyball, netball, turbo touch, basketball, floorball (a form of indoor hockey) and four-corner soccer.

All games take place on Monday evenings between 6.00-9.00pm at Wanaka Recreation Centre, Sir Tim Wallis Drive off Ballantyne Road.

Penny Batchelor, Recreation Programmes Coordinator, says the aim is getting active and having fun.

The next competition kicks off 19 November and ends on 25 February with a five-week break over the summer holidays.

“Sport 10 is super social. The vibe is always entertaining, especially during dodgeball, but team uniforms are optional!” she says.

SPEAKER EVENING IN WANAKA The Himalayan Trust, Mount Aspiring College students and Adventure Consultants are holding a speaker evening to celebrate the success of the earthquake rebuild programme in Nepal and Sir Ed Hillary’s ongoing legacy in the Everest region of Nepal. The event is open to the public and will be held on Tuesday, November 6th at 7.30pm at the St John’s Rooms, Wanaka. Dr Mingma Norbu Sherpa, CEO for the Himalayan Trust Nepal (based in Kathmandu) will provide an update on Nepal’s ongoing recovery from the devastating 2015 earthquakes as well as the latest on the Himalayan Trust’s $1.5 million reconstruction programme. Other speakers include Bruce and Marg Jefferies who helped to set up Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) National Park. Bruce will talk about Sir Ed Hillary’s vision for a national park in the Everest region. A presentation by Mount Aspiring College students about their upcoming trek to Sagarmatha National Park with a community project in Nepal is also planned. Koha donations are welcome with all proceeds going to the Himalayan Trust’s work in Nepal. My memories of Wanaka in the 90s.

SINCE 1978

Calum MacLeod (Cinema Paradiso). “I arrived in a quiet town. A Winter buzz, chilled out for Summer, “tumbleweed time” in between. Kai Whaka Pai boysenberry danish and vege pies with blue cheese made by Mac. Barrows Tavern bulging at New Year, other times left for locals. The Old Town Hall on the corner of Ardmore and Lakeside, built from river gravel in the 50s. A great place for parties, small bore rifle shooting, Fire Brigade celebrations, visiting Bands, art exhibitions but oh so cold – the bar heaters didn’t help. What was missing in town – A cinema! The space was shared – any time it wasn’t booked by community groups we hauled up a screen, set out the couches and chairs and sparked up the carbon rods on the 35mm projectors. Legends of the Fall, The River Wild, and Free Willy came to town on the big screen. The Town Hall stove baking the first Paradiso cookies! Who would have thought we would grow to 2018!”
