DIVE INTO THE NEW WANAKA POOL! Everyone is welcome to join the party when the brand new Wanaka pool facility opens to the community this Sunday 10 June with a free family fun day. Wanaka’s own two-time Olympic triathlete Nicky Samuels will make a special guest appearance cutting the ribbon alongside Queenstown Lakes District Deputy Mayor Calum MacLeod. They will be joined by representatives from funding partners Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust, Lottery Grants Board, Graham and Olive West Charitable Trust, Rotary Wanaka, QLDC and other key stakeholders. Free public swimming runs from 10.00am - 4.00pm on Sunday including a pool party with games, competitions and inflatables from 11.00am - 2.00pm.

Design & Build

It features a 25m, eight-lane lap pool, adult hot pool and a dedicated learners’ pool with separate toddlers’ area. A range of special early bird promotions on membership and concession cards will remain available until the end of the family fun day. From Monday 11 June all facilities at Wanaka Recreation Centre will be open 6.00am - 9.00pm Monday to Friday, and 8.00am-8.00pm on weekends and public holidays. The existing Wanaka Pool on Plantation Road will close to the public with a pool party from 2.00 - 4.00pm on Saturday 9 June. Wanaka & Districts Lions Club, instrumental in the pool’s opening in 1992, will perform the official closing at 4.45pm.

There will be the huge community hangi, with over 900 portions packed in, and to finish it off we will be having our amazing fireworks display - so make sure you hang about!

On Saturday 16 June from 2.30pm until 6.00pm Kahu Youth will be celebrating Matariki once again at the Dinosaur Park.

Once again this is a truly community affair. Kahu Youth would like to thank all of the amazing volunteers, schools and community organisations that put their blood, sweat and tears into making the event happen. Everything from the hangi prep to set-up, pack down, stewarding and all the

workshops and performances are volunteer-led. Kahu Youth are always humbled by the level of help, support and plain old hard graft they receive from the community. Come on down on Saturday and share some kai and good times! This is a smoke and alcohol free event. Assisting them is Andrew Penniket from Te KÄ kano Aotearoa Trust and Oanaka Childcare Supervisor, Katrina Heyneman. The Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs restoration began two years ago and over 1300 native plants have been planted by Te Kakano with help from their volunteers. The children are standing on the recently completed 330 metre boardwalk which winds its way through the Fish & Game property. The Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs has been a cornerstone project for the Wanaka Residents Association (WRA) who fundraised the $100,000 walkway project. The official opening for the Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs has been postponed by the Otago Fish and Game Council due to issues associated with ongoing storm water run-off entering Bullock Creek from the neighbouring subdivision. The

WRA have received widespread community support for steps to be taken to protect this outstanding natural spring creek. The WRA and Fish & Game have been in dialogue with local authorities and have asked for comprehensive updates on the situation.

Hello all from a chilly overcast Wanaka under the inversion. So after a troll through what happened here for the week I can tell you we have had a week of drink driving, no crashes but still some alcohol fuelled behaviours. I know I’m like a broken record but “it’s not what we’re drinking it’s how we’re drinking.� We had a report of a group of about 8 males who kicked in a wooden fence for no reason. This happened just prior to midnight on Saturday 26th May in Tenby Street near Helwick Street. There was the arrest of a male for burglary who entered a property in Jessie’s Crescent and damaged a vehicle the previous week. Police have also interviewed a 60 year old male, who resides outside of Wanaka, who about a month ago shot a cat and killed it. The male told police he believed it to be a possum. He is paying compensation to the cat owner. A male was formally trespassed on Saturday after he confronted a neighbour who was building a garage within reasonable hours. He stated that he comes to Wanaka in the weekends and doesn’t want to hear building noise. Very unrealistic. Another two drink drivers were processed this week. One was almost four times the legal limit for driving.

We have also received complaints from the community about the speed of vehicles travelling through the 30 kph restriction on Aubury Road. So please slow down there. We will be doing some enforcement, particularly in the morning when children are on their way to school.
