Next Sunday will mark the start of the second annual Bike Wanaka Kids Summer series. This series will be run by Wanaka Kids Club with support of our Club. A fun morning out for children aged from 2 - 13 years old. This is the event’s second year; which will be a series of 2 races hosted at different tracks around Wanaka during March: Sunday 11th (Deans Bank) and Sunday the 25th (Lismore Park). “It’s all about having fun, being social and active while supporting Wanaka’s mountain biking industry. We want to encourage Bike Wanaka Club members, locals, kids as well as visitors to the area to get outside and enjoy our local tracks.” There are age categories from balance bikes right

thanks to the support from our sponsors. All proceeds from the race will go to Bike Wanaka to support our local track building, maintenance and future community events. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Kapa haka anyone? ‘Nau mai haere mai’, community kapa haka has started again. Join us. In 2006 a group of locals joined together to set up Matariki Tupu Hou, a community kapa haka group. Adults, flanked by younger children, with babes in arms and toddlers running around, met regularly in the old Presbyterian Hall. Kai was shared, stories told, games played, waiata sung, action songs learnt, support given. Then life got busy, town grew and other things took priority. Now in 2018, kapa haka is back. On Thursdays between 6-8pm (term time only) you will hear vibrant harmonies of waiata spilling forth from the Mt Aspiring College quad/library. Matariki Tupu Hou kapa haka aims to provide a korowai (cloak) for our wider community to grow their understanding of things Māori and gain a sense

of belonging, in a whanau setting, through coming together to learn waiata, waiata-āringa, haka. All who are drawn to being involved are welcome, at any stage. No experience is necessary. For those with tamariki (children), we encourage you to support them, by joining us. Club feedback sought on draft Sport & Recreation Facility Strategy through consultative forums to be held throughout the region Consultative forums will be held throughout the Central Otago and Southern Lakes region to gauge clubs, sporting organisations and schools’ feedback on a draft strategy for Regional Sport and Recreation Facilities, says Owen Booth of Sport Otago. “The draft strategy, prepared by consultants Global Leisure Group, aims to identify the current provision of sport and recreation facilities, any gaps in that provision, and provide direction and priorities for future needs,” he says. “The forums will provide a brief overview of the rationale behind the strategy and the

Another week of congestion and business on the roads and we are lucky not to have had any serious injuries. A motorist at the intersection of Ballantyne Road and Riverbank Road failed to give way at the stop sign and caused a four car pileup. A vehicle crashed on SH6 between Albert Town and Hawea. The driver rolled their vehicle and has been summoned to court for careless driving. Well done for reporting driving incidents this week, as a result several infringement notices have been issued and yet again rental vehicle contracts have been cancelled. This is keeping our roads safe. One excuse this week for crossing the centre line was because they needed to pee. We caught two drink drivers this weekend, one of these had crashed their vehicle and was stuck on top of a tree. The driver was still revving, causing a cloud of smoke when police arrived. Just a reminder if you see someone thinking of drinking and driving stop them. Don’t risk the consequences! Freedom campers are having a lot of media attention at the moment. One vehicle was clamped by QLDC for this reason and the next day both the vehicle and wheel clamp were gone. A theft report has been taken. A tourist was very drunk and being abusive to several bar security staff. He could hardly walk in a straight line, was bouncing off cars and urinating everywhere. He was lost and could not remember where he lived. We assisted him and provided him with a place to stay in the cells until he had sobered up and could string a few words together, which were not abusive. The theft of a jacket from a bar was reported. Keep an eye on your personal belongings at all times. We had a theft from New World where a male stole $92 worth of groceries. Enquiries are ongoing to trace the suspect. One motorist was overtaken by a ute, who slammed on their brakes causing them to crash into the rear of the vehicle. The ute then made off. This was captured on a dash cam. Lastly, we continue to receive information about scams that are being sent via letters, emails or direct phone calls. These scammers often claim to be able to give you large amounts of money if you make contact with them immediately. Please remember if it sounds too good to be true or is not quite right, it’s probably a scam. Have a safe week and enjoy the A&P Show and Rodeo next weekend.

LANDSCAPING MAINTENANCE CONTRACT The Kirimoko Park Residents’ Association (KPRA) seeks tenders for the maintenance of all shared areas and plantings within the Kirimoko Park subdivision for the upcoming 12 months. The contract would cover; • • • • • • •

An exciting project is about to get underway within Kirimoko BACKGROUND

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The owners of two land parcels within Kirimoko are about to embark on a positive transition of the pine forest contained within these sites. This includes:

1 Pine tree removal to begin in Autumn 2018. Total harvest time is expected to be four weeks plus remediation time;

Removal of pine trees (the trees have reached maturity and their removal is inevitable) Replacing pine trees with substantial areas of native vegetation Reinstatement and enhancement of mountain bike tracks A long-term vision to create a Community Reserve If you would like to know more, anyone is invited to attend a public open day onsite on Thursday the 15th of March from 4-6pm. 2 Proposed hours of operation 8am – 6pm; 3 Up to 10 truck movements removing trees from the site is expected per day; 4 The existing walking track through this site will be closed during the harvest operation and a detour will be put in place; 5 The site will be fenced to ensure public safety; 6 Replacement native planting to begin in winter 2018; 7 Future tracks network to be developed in consultation with Bike Wanaka.
