A MĀORI

HISTORY

A whakatauki of the tribe is: Mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei

For us and our children after us.

Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand (Aotearoa), first arrived in waka unua (double hulled voyaging canoes) from Hawaiki more than 600 years ago. Māori connections with the land, mountains and water of New Zealand are steeped in history going right back to the traditional accounts of creation.

Wānaka is one of the lakes referred to in our tradition of 'Nga Puna Wai Karikari o Rakaihautu' which tells how the principal lakes of Te Wai Pounamu (the South Island) were dug by the ancient explorer Rakaihautu. The name 'Wānaka' is considered by some to be a South Island variant of the word 'wananga' which refers to the ancient schools of learning. In these schools young men would be taught whakapapa (genealogies) which stretched back over a hundred generations and karakia (incantations) for innumerable situations.

Wānaka was traditionally noted as a rich tuna (eel) fishery, with many thousands of the fish once being caught, preserved and transported back to the kainga nohoanga (settlements) of coastal Otago.

The tupuna (ancestors) had considerable knowledge of whakapapa (family), traditional trails and tauranga waka (landing places), places for gathering kai (food) and other taonga, ways in which to use the resources of Wānaka, the relationship of people with the lake and their dependence on it and tikanga for the proper and sustainable utilisation of resources. All of these values remain important to Ngai Tahu today.

The Mauri of Wānaka represents the essence that binds the physical and spiritual elements of all things together, generating and upholding all life. All elements of the natural environment possess a life force, and all forms of life are related. Mauri is a critical element of the spiritual relationship of Ngai Tahu Whanui with the lake.

10,000 YEARS AGO

Lake Wānaka and neighbouring Lake Hāwea were formed by glacial erosion during the last ice age.

ON THE MAP

Captain James Cook landed and mapped New Zealand.

EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT

European settlement began in the Upper Clutha River Valley with the establishment of sheep stations by runholders. The first station was at Albert Town, the only place where settlers could ford the Clutha River.

THE START OF TOURISM

The first hotel in the region was opened by Theodore Russell, at the site of the present day Wānaka Hotel.

SNOW TOWN

The opening of ski fields in the area from the 1970's helped to cement Wānaka's status as a year-round resort town.

MĀORI SETTLEMENT

Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand (Aotearoa), first arrived in the region more than 600 years ago.

A VISITOR

Māori chieftans by the name of Reko and Kaikoura guided the region's first European visitor, Nathaniel Chalmers.

THE FIRST GOLD RUSH

At the height of the first gold rush, Cardrona was the region's largest town, with 400 people calling it home.

A NEW NAME

The town of Pembroke was officially renamed Wānaka.

Summer is peak season in Wānaka, with visitors from New Zealand and around the world flocking to the town to enjoy sunny summer days by the lake. With temperatures often reaching 30 degrees in summer, it’s the perfect season to enjoy all that the lakes and rivers have to offer. With lake cruises, fishing charters, water taxis, jet boating, and packrafting to name a few, there is something for everyone. Being peak season it pays to be organised, be sure to book restaurants and activities ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Most hiking tracks are open during the summer months, so it is a great time to explore. Make sure you pack enough supplies on your trip and check the Department of Conservation website before you leave in case there are any track updates. The hottest part of the day usually peaks around 3.00pm, so bear that in mind when planning your excursion.

It’s hard to choose the best time of year to visit Wānaka, but autumn is certainly up there. With the poplar trees lining the lake in their technicolour glory, autumn is the perfect time of year for those wanting to capture envy inducing shots of local scenery.

If you happen to be in Wānaka on a rainy day, then never fear, because there are plenty of indoor activities to choose from. Wānaka may be a small town, but it boasts two unique cinemasRubys and Cinema Paradiso, the latter deservedly described by Lonely Planet as a national treasure. Visitors to this Wānaka institution are met with comfy couches, an eclectic atmosphere, and freshly baked cookies. See the Activities Section for more details.

Maude is a family owned and operated wine company with its roots firmly entrenched in Central Otago. Our first grapes were planted in the Maungawera Valley just ten minutes from the Wanaka township back in 1994, when it was still just a sleepy little holiday destination.

Our beautiful Maude Tasting Room sits just above the Wanaka Golf Course with breathtaking views over the lake and mountains. We implore you to come try some award winning locally handcrafted wines at our tasting bench. We offer a daily selection of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Bubbles.

If your day allows a more leisurely visit, enjoy a glass or bottle alongside some delicious small bites on our scenic terrace. Our gregarious staff will take you through the story of Maude Wines, sharing with you their intimate knowledge of the wines and what makes them so unique. Our hours are Thursday to Monday, from 12 to 5pm. Please note our hours and days do change seasonally so please check online. Amy Bixby Jewellery is a stunning gallery workshop, located at the base of Mt. Iron in Albert Town, easily accessible for walkers and bikers who are encouraged to pop in. Drop by for that unique, ‘one of a kind’ gift to remind you of Wanaka. Visitors not only get to browse and try on her entirely handmade collection, they are also able to see where she crafts her beautiful jewellery.

Amy’s aesthetic and appreciation for the handmade was shaped through her rural upbringing in Central Otago. The DIY mentality was instilled from a young age and the farm provided plenty of opportunities to create and explore. At Dunedin School of Art, her love of tools paired with her artistic creativity flourished in the metalsmith programme and a love of creating hand-forged jewellery was born.

Amy believes there is incredible value in crafting an object entirely by hand, knowing it won’t be reproduced in an exact

likeness. It not only retains that personal connection to its maker, but will also last lifetimes.

Custom work for all occasions, including engagement and wedding rings, are her passion. Amy connects with each customer and the lasting relationships that often develop as a result, are the ultimate perks of her job. Her goal is to create pieces that truly resonate with her customers and help showcase their individuality. As each piece is entirely handforged by Amy, no two pieces are alike.

Welcome to beautiful, waste-conscious Wanaka!

Welcome to Wānaka!

In what may be a world-first, Wanaka is well on the way to being single use cup-free (SUCfree).

Mountains, lakes and dreamy sunsets… Wānaka is our little paradise and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Cafes and caravans all over town have cup lending schemes or are running cup libraries and many are already completely SUCfree.

Join us on a mission to become Aotearoa’s first single-use cup free (SUCfree) town and say “yes” to reusable coffee cups, bottles and bags.

Hundreds of thousands of throwaway cups are being saved from landfill or contaminating our recycling streams every year.

While you’re here, follow the locals and sit, bring your own or borrow.

We’d love you to get on board with this community initiative.

So while you’re here, remember to:

Sit, BYO or borrow a cup.

Thank you!

Ardmore St
Lakeside Road Lake Wanaka MonleyLn Night ‘n Day

5 DAY walks

01. Rob Roy Glacier Track

3–4HRS RETURN (10KMS)

One of New Zealand’s best half day walks. A 1 hour drive from Wānaka, the walk starts from the Raspberry Creek carpark. After a 15 minute walk through the valley you cross the West Matukituki River by swing bridge into beech forest. The track then climbs steadily through a small gorge along the Rob Roy Stream, then into alpine vegetation at the head of the valley, with spectacular views of the Rob Roy Glacier.

*In winter months please check track conditions with the Department of Conservation as the track can be subject to snow and ice.

02. Roy's Peak Track

5-6HRS RETURN (16KMS)

At the summit of this popular day walk is an all-encompassing panorama that includes most of Lake Wānaka, the surrounding peaks and Mount Aspiring/Tititea. Before setting out, be mindful that this exposed track has no shelter from the sun or rain. Temperatures can drop quickly, even in midsummer – take warm and wind-proof clothing. There is challenging avalanche terrain above 1,000m during winter and in spring. Refer to www.avalanche.net.nz if planning a trip.

*Closed for lambing 1 October to 10 November.

03. Lindis Peak Track

5–6HRS RETURN (13KMS)

The track is signposted at the start of Old Faithful Road, off SH8. The view from the 1,226m summit is one of the most extensive in Central Otago. The vista includes the stunning St Bathans Range to the east and numerous peaks along the Main Divide – from the head of the Hopkins Valley in the north, to Mount Aspiring/Tititea in the south.

*Closed for lambing 10 October to 5 December.

04. Dingle Burn Peninsula Track

CAR PARK TO TURIHUKA CONSERVATION AREA: 3–4HRS (12KMS ONE WAY)

Walking along Lake Hāwea’s eastern shores there are great views up the Hunter Valley and, on a clear day, to the west as far as Mount Aspiring/Tititea. From the car park, 8 km north of Timaru Creek, follow the 4WD track to Rocky Point and around the bluffs to Silver Island Bay, before gaining height to sidle around The Peninsula. The Turihuka Conservation Area is at the mouth of the Dingle Burn.

05. Isthmus Peak Track

ISTHMUS PEAK: 5–6HRS RETURN (16KMS)

MATATIAHO CONSERVATION AREA:

5–7HRS (15KMS)

This track is signposted just south of Stewart Creek on SH6. Follow the poled route along the creek until it joins a farm track. From here it’s a steep, winding, rocky climb to a skyline ridge, with sections where bikers will need to dismount and push. A sign on the ridge points right to the track to 1,385m Isthmus Peak, and left along the exposed ridge to the Matatiaho Conservation Area. Craig Burn access: A short walk from the car park leads to a pleasant picnic spot on the lower Craig Burn. There is no formed track above this point on the conservation area; access is via scrubby, steep and rocky terrain.

Closed for fawning 20 November to 20 December.

Bombay originally was made up of seven islands of lush, fertile land. The earliest inhabitants were the Kolis or fisherfolk, which named the islands as Mumbai after a patron deity Mumba Devi. The sultan of Gujarat acquired much of these lands by the 14th Century but it fell to the Portuguese in 1534. The Portuguese later gave MumbaDevi (Bombay) to England as part of a dowry upon the marriage of Catherine of Braganza to Charles II. By the middle of the 17th Century, England held control over the seven islands. Not until the 18th Century following land reclamation were the seven islands joined together again.

Bombay derives its unique character from its varied heritage and is still considered a patchwork quilt of Indian culture and faith. Modern Bombay or Mumbai, the financial and commercial nucleus of India has always been a magnet city attracting the young & elderly, scholars, engineers, artists and entrepreneurs, administrators and the actors from across the length and breadth of the vast and magnificent country of India. Everyone of them in search of fame and fortunes, with their talent, skills and tradition have lent Bombay it’s unparalleled character. With it’s Islamic-Gothic architecture surrounded by modern day Skyscrapers, with temples and mosques, synagogues and churches standing beside five star hotels & discotheques.

Here at Bombay palace, We have aspired to bring to your table a menu that reflects the cosmopolitan culture & culinary specialities of Bombay, the gateway to India.

Our mission – simply make the best tacos we can using NZ ingredients.

For us that means starting with sourcing our whole corn kernels from a farmer named Pattie in Napier. Then using the traditional process of nixtamalization, we turn the corn into masa dough which is fed through Tony the Taco Press, and a delicious fresh corn tortilla is born. Our wood fire grill is at the heart of everything we make, this is where we lovingly grill fresh local ingredients, which are then nestled into your tasty, authentic taco. Best enjoyed with Mexico’s favourite cocktail – the Paloma.

We are now open 7 days a week from 5pm until 10pm
