WATERFRONT 193 - 11/10/10

Editorial Alas, another freshers’ fortnight draws to a close. Did we all enjoy? I hope so! Well done once again to the Swansea Entertainments team for another great start to the year. Don’t forget it’s not quite over just yet. The bonus is that your freshers’ bands get you one more night out TONIGHT with skool disco at Oceana. Being a passionate sports fan, it hasn’t passed my attention what an outstanding week it’s been for Welsh sport in general. In golf, The Ryder Cup ' $$ $ >

came through on the Sunday, just in time for ‘Monty’ to lead team Europe to a fantastic victory and bring the trophy home. To add to this success last Monday saw the Commonwealth Games kick off and despite the controversy surrounding whether the accommodation and stadia were ready for competition to begin, the show went on with all the home nations getting off to a great start. None more so than Swansea University’s very own Jazz Carlin, who swam herself to @ ' / $ > to bag a medal in the pool for 36 years. To add to this Swansea University also has two other girls representing Wales in the Swimming pool, Georgia Davies and Meg Gilchrist. However, he also noted that “a room with computers is a lab, intimating perhaps a refusal to accept

Students thieve fresher fridges

Photo by Silvia Mandler RANSACKED: Fridges stolen from Rhossili Halls

By Laura Richards Deputy News Editor A NUMBER of items have been stolen from the Rhossili residence based on the university campus. During the moving in period, a number of students entered the building and removed items such as individual fridges from unoccupied rooms as well

as personal kitchen equipment located in the communal kitchen area. The students, believed to be second year students who had lived in the residence the previous year, were seen asking current residents to grant them access to the block but refused entry. The Waterfront understands as there was no sign of forced entry, it is believed that either someone allowed them into

the block or they managed to enter before the front door was fully closed.  @ 4$ Clive Dainton told The Waterfront, “The students entered the block when they had no right to do so and went on to take items that did not belong to them. They had ample time to return the items but failed to do so. The University and Police are now working together, at the moment it is unclear as to whether they will receive a criminal record or not. A spokesperson from Swansea University highlighted that “all allegations of poor behaviour are taken seriously and the University has disciplinary procedures in place to deal effectively with complaints. The University also works in partnership with the police, the local council and other statutory bodies to ensure that appropriate action is taken. Incidents have also been reported at the Hendrefoelan Student Village, where a number of items have gone missing. Although no break-ins have been

that students are becoming increasingly negligent with personal security. “On a recent visit to the Student Village, a number of doors were found to be left open, including some places that had already been warned about the potential risk of theft. In order to emphasise the need to secure all doors and windows, the police have launched “Operation Hand. On random occasions, they will enter unsecure rooms and place cut-out hands on valuable items that could easily be stolen. Malinowski-Evans hopes that the scheme will make people realise how vulnerable they are to theft and that they will ensure that all windows and doors are kept locked. Swansea University and the Police are keen to stress that despite the recent incidents, “the number of incidences reported across the student population remains low and Swansea is recognised as one of the safest cities in the UK in which to live, work and study.

Freshers affected by Oceana’s underage drinking sting By Adele MacGregor News Editor SWANSEA’S BIGGEST nightclub was forced to close its doors following an enforcement operation run by police and trading standards which discovered that the club had served alcohol to under-18s on two separate occasions during the summer. Oceana, located on the Kingsway, was told to close for 48 hours as a penalty for selling alcohol to underage drinkers. The nightclub closed from 9am Sunday October 3rd though to 9am Tuesday October 5th. The club opted to temporarily close rather than face prosecution for the offenses.

Inspector Bill John said the police aim was to work with licensed premises such as Oceana to “ensure a safe and secure environment for people to enjoy what the night time economy $$ ! "# '

In April this year popular Wind Street night club Idols was forced to close for two days after it was discovered that alcohol had been served to underage teens. In a press statement Oceana has said; “A full internal investigation has

been conducted and where necessary, Oceana’s already strict door policies have been tightened accordingly. We look forward to working with the Police and licensing authorities when Oceana Swansea re-opens for trade midday Tuesday 5th October, adding that; “Oceana prides itself on being the market leader in terms of compliance of the legislation that regulates the nightclub and bar industries. The event that was due to be held at Oceana, Skool Disco featuring Fatman Scoop, will now be held tonight (October 11th). In its place nightclub Odyssey opened its doors to students last Monday. Entry was free with a wristband, giving Freshers Wristband holders an added night out.

“Students have blagged an extra night on the wristband Jamie Tagg, Entertainment Assistant told The Waterfront. “We’ve had to move the line-up, } transport for Fatman Schoop. Tagg stresses that Swansea Entertainments were not willing to cancel the event and that it was worth the effort to move the date of the event, saying that Fatman Scoop has been “brilliant in light of the changes. Tagg was also keen to praise Odyssey saying; “We want to thank Odyssey. The night went very smoothly. Considering the circumstances, they were outstanding.

Eliot Miller 2nd year - History “I was told Swansea had a reputation for its Arts and Humanities department, that’s why I came here. Most of the SU is made up of Humanities students and I don’t think the department should be downsized at the University.

New charity shop Discovery! Angharad Jones Deputy News Editor A NEW Discovery charity shop opened its doors in Brynmill for the start of the new term. Primarily led by students, the organisation provides opportunities for volunteers in Swansea, aiming to improve the lives of disadvantaged local people through various programmes. Hoping to continue and improve previous efforts to provide this support, Discovery urges students to donate all their unwanted items that can be sold for charity. The volunteers are particularly interested in homeware, books, toys and all types of clothing. Christine Watson, Manager of Discovery told The Waterfront “Hundreds of Swansea University students volunteer every year with the aim of enriching the lives of disadvantaged people, challenging discrimination and supporting disabled people in the Swansea area. “The success of the Discovery

Charity Shop will allow these volunteers to continue this work by taking vulnerable adults out to enjoy some independent time whilst their carers $ ' ! While Discovery volunteers work to encourage disadvantaged people to participate in local gardening and landscaping, efforts will be made to maintain the quality of our healthy, beautiful beaches. Natalie Mills, Discovery’s Student President and a Psychology student at Swansea University added “by donating any unwanted items to the Discovery Charity Shop, you’ll not only be creating space in your life but you’ll also be recycling in the best possible way. Natalie concluded “we have some fantastic stock for sale, including the weird and wonderful, the functional and the frivolous. Whether buying or donating, you’ll be supporting a really vital local cause. If you wish to donate any unwanted items, or bag a bargain - visit the Discovery Charity Shop on the corner of Malborough Road, Brynmill.

Running for Africa SIXTY STUDENTS from Swansea University are aiming to raise £10,000 for SOS Africa writes Deputy News Editor Laura Richards. On October 17th, the students will take part in the 2010 Cardiff Half Marathon, a fundamental part of the charity’s fundraising since 2003. Over £25,000 has been raised by students taking part, with £7,000 being raised at last year’s event. Founded by Matt Crowcombe, a Swansea University PhD student during his gap year in South Africa, SOS Africa aims to help with the education and care of underprivileged South African

township children. Since its launch, the charity has been able to help 12 children begin their schooling in grammar schools with high levels of education and care. Each year, the cost of education for a child is only ÂŁ650 which provides all the necessities to help the child in their education. One fundraiser, Ben Wong, has already raised over ÂŁ700 which will in turn secure the future of one child. Campus Bike Thefts STILL On The Rise! By Laura Richards Deputy News Editor BICYCLE THEFTS are increasing around the University Campus according to Swansea University Police. The Waterfront revealed last year how students are at risk of bike theft due to the lack of security. Despite this students are still leaving themselves open to theft by using poor quality locks and not locking their bikes correctly.  @ 4$ Clive Dainton stated that, “people buy / / $ but more often than not they aren’t. Wire locks are easy to cut through so therefore a sturdier lock such as a DLock is much safer. University funding has provided the security department with eighty D -Locks which are to be distributed to students who own bikes. Dainton is keen to stress that once

issued, the locks must be placed on the bikes straight away and also used in the correct manner. A number of bikes around campus can be seen with the locks around the front wheels but Dainton states that this leaves the bikes extremely vulnerable. “The majority of bikes now have a quick release function on the front wheel. Therefore if the bike is locked through the wheel they can release it from the frame, take the wheel from another bike and then ride away. However it’s not just on campus where bicycle owners are being targeted. 4 @  4$ ‚ Malinowski-Evans revealed that on a recent visit to the Hendrefoelan Student { } Woodside where three bikes were left unattended and could easily have been stolen without anyone noticing. Students are therefore advised to ensure that bikes are securely locked at all times and never left unattended.

Lecturer Sabbatical Disapoints Students By Angharad Jones Deputy News Editor SPORTS SCIENCE students are concerned with a popular lecturer’s decision to take a two year sabbatical break. Mike Kingsley has recently announced he will be taking a two-year career break to Australia for research purposes, leaving a number of Sports Science students are disappointed and enraged at the consequences of the decision. In particular, Undergraduate students have raised concerns that ' completely. As a result students have been unable to specialise in HealthRelated Exercise, jeopardising their ' Third year Sports Science student Adam Blythman tells The Waterfront “I feel what has happened with Sport Science this year is totally unacceptable. “Cancelling a module just a couple of weeks before term starts is extremely

unfair, leading to myself and many others being forced to do modules we don’t want to do. Dr Kingsley intends on continuing to provide remote supervision for the duration of his present students’ study via Skype. However, Postgraduates are concerned about the standard of supervision that can be delivered over the internet. Ironically, Sports Science performed extremely well in this year’s National Student Survey, demonstrating high levels of student satisfaction. . $ 1 / 2 “The National Student Survey showed that last year’s students were extremely pleased with the course, so it is disappointing that before the new term even started students module choices had been cut. “Students dissertation proposals had to be ripped up and the range of teaching was cut down which naturally, students are disappointed about. The department are offering their support to affected students through supplying alternative supervision, and

Global Poverty Project Presented to Swansea Students By Laura Richards Deputy News Editor THE GLOBAL Poverty Project held a workshop in the James Callaghan lecture theatre last week. Since being launched in 2008, the Global Poverty Project strives to help those in extreme poverty who have no choice or opportunity for change. The Project developed a presentation entitled “1.4 Billion Reasons which was presented to the Swansea Students. The presentation focused on communicating the facts of extreme poverty and demonstrating the impact that people’s choices have on the situation affecting 1.4 billion people. Dennis Marcus commented

“Students need to realise that they have the power to make a difference. It is such an overwhelming task to take the whole world out of poverty and therefore it needs to be taken small steps at a time. Even a small group has the power to change the world. Everyone has the choice to make decisions which could help others. Stephen Marshall, organiser of the event and Environment and Ethics 4$ " the talk would encourage students to engage in deeper thoughts over the way that they live and the issues affecting such a huge part of the world. VIGILANCE ADVISED IN WAKE NATIONAL DISASTER

OF TERROR PLOT THREAT

By Alun Rhys Chivers News Editor REPORTS SUGGEST that a recent increase in drone attacks by the US military on Pakistan is due to an attempt to eliminate possible terrorist attacks by Al-Qaeda across Europe. The United Kingdom, the United States, Sweden, France, Germany and Japan have issued advice to citizens who may be travelling, advising vigilance whilst in crowded places across Europe, following US media reports of potential terrorist attacks. Much of Europe has seen its threat level raised from general to high, although Sweden’s level remains one of Europe’s lowest. The UK remains at the second highest threat level of ‘severe’ and not ‘critical’, suggesting that any potential attack is likely but not imminent. Particular care should be taken $ transport systems are often the target of attacks. Travellers are urged to be vigilant around prominent tourist sites. Indeed, in recent weeks, the Eiffel Tower has been the subject of bomb

threats causing tourists to be evacuated on two occasions. Early indications are that aspirations of a terrorist attack in Europe have become a far greater reality, with the potential for attacks similar to those in Mumbai in 2008, where 166 civilians were taken hostage and killed, and where 300 were injured. # 3 / of a potential security threat, based on intelligence provided by Ahmed Sidiqi, arrested in Afghanistan in July following his involvement with militants closely linked to the 9/11 attacks. But who is Ahmed Sidiqi? Sidiqi was granted German citizenship in 2001, having moved from his native Afghanistan two years previously, in order to work as an aircraft cleaner at Hamburg Airport. He was involved with 10 other Jihadists who were trained at terrorist camps in Pakistan, and has been held at a US base in Bagram following his arrest. During a visit to Peshawar in 2009 to meet up with the other Jihadists, Sidiqi met Sheikh Younis al-Mauretani, mastermind of the group who met at a mosque in Hamburg, plotting attacks

allegedly approved by Osama Bin Laden. German authorities have since closed down the mosque. It was Sidiqi who ultimately led US $ $ $ an attack on Europe. The latest threat comes as the United States attacked the Afghan border in a drone attack, allegedly killing some of the Hamburg militants. The latest spate of 20 drone attacks on the Pakistani border with Afghanistan has seen the highest number in any month for six years, with the latest attack in Waziristan reportedly killing Al-Qaeda’s third most powerful leader, Sheikh Fate al-Masri. A total of 27 NATO tankers carrying supplies across the Khyber Pass near Islamabad were attacked, in response to the killing of three Pakistani soldiers during air strikes on Afghanistan which strayed into Pakistani territory. The tankers were being prepared at a depot in Rawat near Islamabad when the terrorists began shooting at them, leading to an explosion. / ' were killed by a drone attack in Mir Ali in the Waziristan region. The Taliban have warned that the attacks will continue until NATO supplies are stopped. In a worrying twist for the United Kingdom, British terror suspect Abdul Jabbar, killed in one of the drone attacks, had allegedly been involved in the planning of a new terrorist group, the Islamic Army of Great Britain. Jabbar had been living in Jhelum in Pakistan with his British-born wife.

First SGM to Review Nestle Ban By Steven Kay News Reporter EVERY MONTH Swansea Students Union gives students a chance to help decide upon major issues that are currently arising within the Union at the time. This has led to many decisions being made within the Union and University, ranging from issues such as should there be a reduced number of Student Executives, to the hotly disputed issues such as the banning of both Nestle products and ‘lads mags’ within Student Union shops. As the summer break drew to a close huge outcry was heard over the potential banning of the ‘lads mags’ after an article within The Waterfront highlighted the possibility of them being banned. This led to over three hundred people joining a facebook group protesting against the proposed ban. Although very few of the three hundred people actually showed up for the meeting, despite the date of the meeting being well publicised in both the group itself and within The Waterfront. This lead to the item

concerning the banning of ‘lads mags’ being passed. In the up and coming Student General Meeting on Tuesday October 19th at 18:00 - 19:30 in Faraday A, perhaps the most controversial items will be discussed once again, that of the Nestle Ban, as under Student Union legislation the issue needs to be re-voted upon every three years. James urged students to attend “Whether you want to lower the price of a pint in JC’s or make the Union campaign on something you feel strongly about the Student General Meeting is the place to do it. Every student is a member of the Student Union and everyone deserves to have a say in the way the Union is run.

Pollution is understood to have hit the Mosoni area of the Danube, a mere 10km (6 miles) from the mainstream Danube. Acid and gypsum are being used to bring the alkaline levels down. Clay has also been placed into the Marcal river in order to neutralise the slurry. A criminal neglicence inquiry is understood to have been launched following the disaster. Clean-up operators have been working around the clock to reinforce the reservoirs which are fully functional at present. A local industrial company which works along the river has said that a repeat of the disaster is unlikely, but villagers remain concerned. Some expressed their concerns at a meeting with the company in Kolontar last week, claiming that they will sue Floods caused by the rapid movement of slurry are believed to have drowned most of those who have died in the tragedy, with the liquid having reached a height of 2m. Others have died as a result of chemical burns. Herwit Schuster, a spokesman for Greenpeace International, described the spill as “one of the top three environmental disasters in Europe in the last 20 or 30 years. Land had been “polluted and destroyed for a long time, he told AP

THE CLEAN-UP in the aftermath of one of Europe’s top three environmental disasters in the last 30 years could take up to a decade and cost millions of pounds to complete, according to Greenpeace International. A build-up of 50 years worth of aluminium waste has hit villages across Hungary, and may yet enter the river Danube near Veszprem, where four people have already been killed and 120 injured. The disaster has caused pollution on a large scale in at least six villages, as well as part of the town of Veszprem. Two rivers appear to have an alkaline level which is higher than the normal rate, with a southern branch of the Danube affected. Potentially, Croatia, Serbia and Romania could face major devastation should the slurry enter the Danube. ‘ ŠŠ $ soldiers, as well as six emergency detection teams have been posted in the region. On his visit to Kolontar last week, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that some of the worst affected areas would be abandoned, calling the spill a “geological tragedy.

Labour Lacks Welsh MP

in Shadow Cabinet LABOUR LEADER Ed Milliband contain a Welsh MP, despite the fact that none made it through in a party vote. Peter Hain, MP for Neath, said he was “obviously disappointed and believes that too many MPs from Wales stood, splitting the vote. Mr Hain added, “It tells us that Labour MPs wanted a new generation of shadow cabinet members...There are a lot of women in the shadow cabinet, that’s really good. That generation will take us forward. Three MPs from Scotland were

elected including Douglas Alexander, Jim Murphy and Ann McKechin. In Northern Ireland the situation is different as there are no MPs for Labour, the Conservatives or the Liberal Democrats. Nick Davies, chairman of Welsh Labour Grass Roots, was also disappointed and said “It’s a bit of a shame that a country that consistently rejects the Tories does not have a representative and echoed Mr Hain’s comment that perhaps there were too many Welsh MPs standing.

Waterfront yn Gymraeg Y Gymraeg yn Abertawe Y GWPAN RYDER YN DOD I GYMRU! Daeth un o ddigwyddiadau chwaraeon mwyaf y byd i Gymru y penwythnos diwethaf. Y digwyddiad hwn oedd y Gwpan Ryder, ac ym mhle y cafodd ei chynnal? Fel rydym oll yn gwybod, fe ddigwyddodd yng Nghymru, ar gwrs y Celtic Manor yng Nghasnewydd. Pan glywodd pobl fod y digwyddiad i’w gynnal yng Nghymru, roedd pawb yn hapus ac yn gyffrous. Mae llawer o resymau dros hyn, ond y rheswm pwysicaf yw’r ffaith fod rhywbeth mawr iawn yn dod i le bach. Yn fy marn i - ac rwy’n siŵr y bydd pobl yn cytuno - roedd y digwyddiad hwn wedi rhoi Cymru ar y map. Nid oedd llawer o bobl yn gwybod rhyw lawer am Gymru o’r blaen gan ei bod yn wlad fach, ond mae’n wlad wych hefyd ac mae’n drist nad yw pobl yn gwybod hyn. Felly, mae’r ffaith fod y Gwpan Ryder yn dod i Gymru yn ennyn diddordeb pobl yn y wlad, y bobl a’r lleoedd. Gobeithio y bydd pobl yn ymddiddori yn yr iaith hefyd, gan ei bod yn un o’r ieithoedd arbennig hynny y mae llawer o bobl yn colli allan arnynt. Mae gan Gymru a’r Gymraeg lawer o agweddau o ddiddordeb, a golygfeydd arbennig o hardd ond yn anffodus, mae’r rhan fwyaf o’r rhain yn cael eu hanwybyddu. Mae’r Gwpan Ryder yn ddigwyddiad arbennig sydd wedi rhoi llawer o sylw a chyhoeddusrwydd i Gymru. Nid yn unig y mae chwaraeon yn denu pobl ond mae llawer o wynebau enwog wedi bod o gwmpas Casnewydd, gan gynnwys Michael Jordan, Will Smith, Samuel L Jackson, Jack Nicholson a David Beckham. Mantais arall i Gasnewydd sy’n deillio o’r digwyddiad yw gwelliant i gysylltiadau trafnidiaeth o fewn Casnewydd. Mae hyn yn arbennig o dda ar gyfer pobl Casnewydd a thu hwnt. Ond i ganolbwyntio ar y digwyddiad ei hun, roedd y canlyniad yn wych, gydag Ewrop yn curo’r Unol Daleithiau. Am y tro cyntaf erioed, chwaraewyd y twrnament dros bedwar diwrnod, a gorffennodd ar brynhawn dydd Llun. Y rheswm dros hyn oedd y tywydd nodweddiadol Gymreig; nid oedd yn syndod i lawer bod y glaw wedi amharu ar y chwarae ddydd Gwener a dydd Sul. Serch hynny, nid yng Nghymru yn unig yr oedd hi’n bwrw glaw. Roedd y cwrs yn y Celtic Manor yn ardderchog, ac fe barodd drwy gydol y tywydd ofnadwy. Ond ar nodyn cadarnhaol, roedd y digwydd yn llwyddiannus. Yn anffodus, mae wedi creu argraff negyddol o Gymru a fydd bob amser yn fyd enwog am gynnal un o ddigwyddiadau chwaraeon mwyaf y byd.

TORIADAU GWARIANT Y TORIAID

YN BYGWTH DYFODOL S4C Gan Jess Main Mae’r toriadau i gyllid S4C yn fygythiad i lais ein cymunedau yng Nghymru. Fel rhan o benderfyniad y llywodraeth newydd ar gyfer toriadau helaeth i’r DCMS (Adran dros Ddiwylliant, y Cyfryngau a Chwaraeon), mae disgwyl i S4C golli tua dwy filiwn o bunnoedd. Petai’r toriadau hyn yn dod i rym, fe fyddai’n drychinebus i Gymru ac i ddiwylliant Cymru’n gyffredinol. Mae gostyngiadau mewn gwariant yn ymddangos fel pe bai’n ymgais i fynd i’r afael â diffyg ariannol Prydain, fel yr awgrymwyd gan y Canghellor George Osbourne. Sefydlwyd S4C ym 1982, ac wedi hynny mae wedi esblygu’n llwyddiannus i fod yn rhan hollol annatod o’r byd darlledu digidol. Mae hi’n un o gannoedd o sianeli sy’n darlledu’n gwbl ddigidol o fewn Cymru, ar draws y Deyrnas Unedig ac ar ei gwefan www.s4c.co.uk. Awgrymodd Peter Hain AS yr wythnos diwethaf y byddai’r toriadau’n rhwystro datblygiad y diwydiannau creadigol yng Nghymru. Mae’n amlwg y bydd llawer o bobl yng Nghymru yn flin ynghylch y penderfyniad newydd, yn enwedig y rheini, fel fi fy hunan, sy’n teimlo’n gryf dros gynnal yr iaith. Yn y blynyddoedd ers ei sefydlu, mae S4C wedi bod yn llwyfan i 600,000 a mwy o bobl, ac mae wedi helpu i hyrwyddo iaith sy’n cael ei disgrifio gan gymaint o bobl fel ‘iaith farw’. Mae’n codi’r cwestiwn, sut bydd diwylliant Cymraeg yn parhau ac yn llwyddo, pan nad yw’r llywodraeth newydd yn dangos cyn lleied o gefnogaeth? Wedi dweud hynny, mae’n ymddangos bod rhai pobl yn wirioneddol gefnogol i S4C ac wedi mynegi eu pryderon ar ffurflen ysgrifenedig. Yr wythnos diwethaf, anfonwyd sawl llythyr o wrthwynebiad at yr Ysgrifennydd dros Ddiwylliant, Jeremy Hunt. Mae’r rhestr o lythyrwyr yn cynnwys yr actor Ioan Gruffudd, y cyflwynydd Alex Hunt a’r gantores Katherine Jenkins. Pe bai’r toriadau arfaethedig yn dod i rym, byddai llais y cyfryngau Cymraeg dan fygythiad, ac felly pwy a ŵyr beth fydd hyn yn ei olygu am ddyfodol yr iaith Gymraeg fel ag y mae hi? Os ydych chi’n teimlo’n gryf am y mater hefyd, gallwch chi wneud gwahaniaeth hun naill ai drwy ymuno â’r grŵp Facebook neu hyd yn oed drwy ysgrifennu llythyr at Jeremy Hunt yn uniongyrchol!

Stage: Danger Mouse Saves The World For those unfortunate few who are old enough to remember, cast your minds back to 1981 when the greatest secret agent burst onto our TV screens in the form of Danger Mouse. Along with his faithful sidekick Penfold, Danger Mouse Â’ , such as Baron Silas Greenback. Danger Mouse was an instant success and a massive 21.6 million viewers tuned in at its most popular point with success shortly following in the US and numerous other countries around the world. The , household name appealing to people of all ages and he is still somewhat of an icon with various high street stores stocking

The company started by creating productions aimed at schools to help the pupils understand Shakespeare as well as other literature classics. The productions were not only popular with pupils but with teachers as well and the company has continued to grow and “Danger Mouse Saves The World is its most recent production. The production has brought the popular 80s cartoon Danger Mouse to life once again by including all the

favourite characters, good and bad, and creating fantastic costumes so as not to deviate too much from the original cartoon. The writers have also kept the script very true to the cartoon meaning it still entertains all ages. The show begins by introducing a young Danger Mouse to the younger members of the audience and reacquainting him with the Danger Mouse veterans. True to form, Danger Mouse and his team set about protecting the world from the evil clutches of Baron Silas Greenback but they are not as young as they used to be. However thanks to a brilliant new invention they are transformed into the young, unstoppable team they once were and they can get

down to saving the world. This 90 minute show is a must see for Danger Mouse fans and newcomers alike. Literature: Ian Gregson: Poets in the Bookshop The Dylan Thomas Centre in the Marina is well-renowned for its arts evenings, be they theatre, art exhibitons or poetry nights. On Thursday October 21st, poet Ian Gregson will be doing some readings from his latest collection, How We Met. One of his collections, Call Centre Love Song, was shortlisted for the Forward Prize. He is currently a Professor in the English Department at Bangor University.

The night in the Dylan Thomas Centre (which is beautiful, by the way – I highly recommend that you go there if just to see such a fantastic building) also includes an Open Mic night, so anyone with a poem that they wish to release to the world can go there and read. The poems can be read in either English or Welsh, so there will be an exciting dynamic of language to add to the mix. Poetry nights go so

Taliesin: Greenberg Don’t be fooled into reading “...stars Rhys Ifans and Ben Stiller, and thinking that ‘Greenberg’ is a film of goofed comedy, with public displays of underpants and ‘Focker’ innuendo’s. Instead Stiller, who plays the title role Roger Greenberg, takes this opportunity to exhibit his ability of portraying a character of a more sombre nature, whose humourless and quite frankly miserable approach to life results in him filling his days writing letters of complaint to worldwide companies. Such pessimism is due to his lack of success as a rock star in his youth and, as the viewer will come to understand, a lack

of affection within his life as a whole. I understand why you may be thinking at this point- how depressing- however do not underestimate the quality of the writing from Oscar-nominated screenwriter Noah Baumbach (who is also the director) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (who herself makes an appearance in the film as Greenberg’s ex-wife). Their creation of a completely incompatible couple, who exist in each other’s lives in the form of awkward conversation, convenient company and even more awkward sex, is illustrated with a dry humour, and renders a poignancy which

well with University life, and the feeling of being sat with so many wonderfully wordy people is just brilliant, particularly with someone such as Ian Gregson. The evening will cost you £4 each, or just £2.80 for concessions. This is a very inexpensive night, and will be something different for you to get involved with. A more cynical mind however, may see a collaboration of a middle aged narcissist, and an attractive younger woman who gives herself up, most noticeably in terms of her body, as a story reiterated by what is in many terms a patriarchal business. The reason for Greenberg being in LA is to house-sit for his wealthy and successful brother for six weeks; the fact he is even able to give up such a significant period of time tells a lot about his life. It is whilst there that he decides to get in contact with old friends, and Rhys Ifans is

introduced to us as one of his old band mates, Ivan. Here we are met with a gentle soul who seems to have accepted whatever life has thrown at him, but like others from Greenberg’s past Ivan keeps an emotional distance from him, as they have all learnt the hard way just how self-absorbed he can be. For a thought provoking narrative, and a break from the ever-present romcom, go and see ‘Greenberg’ at the Taliesin on Wednesday 13th October. I’ve bought my ticket!

Taliesin: Tamara Drewe

Did you miss the recent showings of the hit film Tamara Drewe at the cinema? Well don’t panic because the Taliesin is giving you another chance to see it this October! And it’s not just for the girls, this film has something for the boys as well, in the form of Gemma Arterton! Tamara Drewe tells the story of a girl who was once an ugly duckling in a small Dorset village. Tamara returns to her home town as a glamorous journalist. However, she is forced to face an old flame, Andy, and with a rockstar boyfriend named Ben back in London, Tamara finds herself in a sticky love triangle. However, this is not just a

simple rom-com. We later meet Jody, who sees Tamara as somewhat of an enemy when she accepts the proposal of Ben. This leads to Jody’s attempted sabotage of Tamara and Ben’s relationship. Tamara’s return visit to Dorset seems to cause quite a stir with the locals and she finds herself the focus of most of the town’s gossip. Tamara Drewe has a wide variety of different characters which makes it stand out over all of the other summer romcoms, and also stars Mamma Mia actor, Dominic Cooper. The film is roughly based on Posy Simmonds’s long-running comic strip in The Guardian, which

appeared in 110 copies and was extremely popular. It has been said, however, that it is not totally faithful to the original comic strip, and instead takes a more light -hearted approach. This hilarious British film has everything you could want from a comedy: romance, great actors and most of all, humour! It also offers the viewer a crazy, unexpected ending. Overall, Tamara Drewe has received great ratings from critics and the general public. If you’re looking for an easy watch, then this film is the one for you! Also, the film has an almost entirely British cast, and includes many spectacular views of the

Taliesin: The Illusionist

The Illusionist tells the story of a reticent conjurer, as he is left behind by the changing world of the late 1950s. Though at first glance a semi-silent animation may not appeal, director Sylvain Chomet’s beguiling use of animation, and exquisite attention to visual detail are what make this film so impressive. The film follows the illusionist, and his disobedient white rabbit, as his quaint conjuring act is muscled out of both Paris and London by the boisterous

music shows that are dominating the entertainment scene as the 50s turn into the 60s. As he humbly moves on to perform in Scotland at the request of a bagpipe playing highlander, pastel coloured visions of the Western Isles and more of the illusionist’s modest conjuring take centre stage. One spectator at his show, a doe-eyed girl called Alice, is so impressed (by what she believes is real magic) that she follows him to Edinburgh. As the melancholy tone moves to the

streets of the capital the animations are at their most elegant. The distinctive grey buildings and sombre traffic provide a magical backdrop for Chomet’s vision of a changing world. As the conjuror tries to find his way in another new city, his habit of buying increasingly generous gifts for Alice begins to cause problems for them both. Through magical animations and subdued storytelling, The Illusionist captures and celebrates the beauty of a lost

Dorset countryside. Gemma Arterton’s performance has been described as ‘brilliant’ and she seems to really throw herself into her ‘good-time girl’ character. She also caused quite a stir with her sexy portrayal of her character in the film. Tamara Drewe is most definitely worth a watch, even if its just to support a good old British rom-com! Hannah Price

era. Through its melancholy portrayal of the protagonist’s struggle to earn a living, it laments those things that are lost as times change. The film has attracted many five star reviews, and those who can tolerate 90 minutes of near silence and gentle reflection should also be enchanted. The Illusionist is showing at the Taliesin on Thursday 28th October, at 4:30 and 7:30. Greg Stephenson

Society: # ) $ { ' ˆ When people ask you, “why were women put on this earth? you can now officially answer “to make man a sandwich. That is according to the Swansea University Comedy Club, anyway. In the space of two hours I saw a meeting between God and his board of directors, two cows facing the slaughterhouse and finally got told what really happened to Humpty Dumpty. An exciting mix of sketches and

stand-up led to continuous laughter from the crowd, and for only £3 entry – all in all a great night. The evening introduced a new stand up act, and it was refreshing to see new up-and-coming talent being given centre stage. The worryingly sexual chemistry between brilliantly funny duo Fred Cooper and Jamie Harrison drew bursts of hysterics from the audience, and the caffeine addicts sketch was a personal

favourite of mine – as a self-confessed caffeine addict I fully empathise with the need to wander around in a dressing gown. If I was to find fault at all it would be with the headline act – the professional comedian I found to be not to my personal taste, but I anyway preferred to see the raw talent of the students. It’s great to see so many students being given

the opportunity to ‘stand up’ on stage. The Comedy Club have a great history of stand-ups, with shows at the Summer Ball and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. If you get the chance to see them again in the next term – I suggest you go. A cheap night out, bring your housemates and be prepared for some laughs! Over the course of the year they do sketches, stand ups and Open Mic nights. This show was

a ‘best of ’ their current material – I’m excited to see what they come up with and offer for the next show. New president Patrick Collins and the committee should be happy with a very successful night. Becca Cooper

Amazing band, amazing album, amazing song.

One of the best hardcore bands around right now. A band that isn’t afraid to add melody to their songs, no matter what the elitist hardcore community thinks.

Brand New - Bought A Bride A great band that don’t give a f*ck and write exactly what they want an attitude that is very inspirational to us. Tom Seale Jonsi - Sinking Friendships The singer of Sigur Ros’s project and it has completely surpassed everything his old band has done. Completely original and unique. Mumford And Sons - The Cave The biggest band in the world currently and deservedly so. Such great tunes.

Our collective favourite band. The least cool band to like in the world but we don’t give a f*ck. They write huge, powerful songs. Tim HB

One of the best bands in the world, another example of a band that takes risks musically, producing amazing results.

MUSIC REVIEWS Our reporters dissect the latest releases. Klaxons – Twin Flames

Chiddy Bang- The Preview

Tinie Tempah - Disc-Overy

The Pierces - Love You More

The Saturdays - Higher

They say that a week is a long time in politics - in that case three years in music feels like a lifetime. That’s how long it has taken Klaxons to follow up their Mercury Prize winning album Myths of the Near Future. After marking their return over the summer festival circuit, Klaxons are back with a bang with Twin Flames - the infectious second single to be released from their new album Surfing The Void. Twin Flames might not have the same pure pop logic of the likes of Golden Skans or It’s Not Over Yet, but this slow burning classic is likely to become the sound of your after-party. Klaxons are no longer the crazed nu-ravers that they once were, they have matured into a band with lasting appeal. After three years it’s great to have you back boys!

Chiddy Bang’s newest release does what the title implies and more. For

% months, it’s a polished sample of the duo’s music: a prequel to their upcoming debut album Swelly Life. The Preview is an energetic collection of party tracks and lively social commentaries on their lives and experiences over the past year. Though the material may not be more original-sounding than anything else around the music scene these days, it makes use of a clever and witty } # ' % lent example of today’s hip-hop scene, some of the clear hits including a fresh outlook on the original MGMT track in ‘Opposite of Adults’, and catchy opener ’# ˆ 1 $ , seamlessly into the track and setting the tone for the album, promising good things for the upcoming full length feature.

With three albums and ten predominantly fruitless years under their belt, it’s hard to believe that the steely $ # Â

paying off. ‘Love You More’, the single from the New York duo’s soon-tobe-released EP, marks a turning point in what has been an unwelcome, and at times undeserved, spell of mixed reviews for siblings Allison and Catherine Pierce. Replacing their previously macabre motifs and at times downright depressing lyrics is a revitalised and powerful sound not dissimilar to the meaty riffs of an early Velvet Underground. A lethal combination of hypnotic harmonies and beautifully poetic lyrics are sandwiched between the ripping sound of an undeniably catchy rhythm. It’s a certainty that one listen to this chillingly powerful tune will have you humming along and reaching for the repeat button. Can they top it or is this gem a one off? My bet is that it’s the beginning of something exceptional.

James Shingler

Esther Wright

To say the very least, Tinie Tempah is a highly accomplished man. Already renowned for his bold musical choices, ' } annoyingly catchy ‘Pass Out’ not only recognised Tinie as a household name, but also transformed the direction of British urban music in 2010. Recorded over the last long and gruelling 11 months, the widely-anticipated Disc-Overy be comprised of the same fearless attitude that both ‘Pass Out’ and ‘Frisky’ encompasses. However, divulge further into the record and Disc-Overy is a

$ $ production that incorporates dark pop and gutter grime with loud, temposhifting drum and bass. Whilst ‘Simply Unstoppable’ uncovers the rapper’s

' ‹ „††Š 3‚ rage and appearances by Ellie Goulding in ‘Wonderman’, Tinie’s collaboration 5 ƒ |’ƒ Ibiza’) is another that is set to be a huge }

DiscOvery as a diverse album, Tinie details the highs and lows of fame and fortune and without a doubt has the absolute ability to take the rest of the world by storm.

Let’s face it, some record executives are just plain sadists: how else can you explain the introduction of ‘Chico Time’ to the 24 hour clock, or when Sugababes thought ‘Get Sexy’ really was a good idea? Yup, sadism is alive and well in the music industry and is surely the only reason we’ve had to endure three albums of Frankie, Rochelle and‌ the other three. ‘Higher’ is the latest product of The Saturdays’ regurgitating singles machine but as per usual, there’s nothing worthy of any fully-functioning human’s time. Whether it’s the vapid lyrics or a reliably cringeworthy effort from Flo Rida, the girls are once again bringing nothing interesting to the table. Listening to this will only make you yearn for the days when girl groups were coming up with the likes of ‘Freak Like Me’ and ‘Biology’ instead of this autotuned dross. Or you’ll be yearning for earplugs. One thing you won’t be yearning for? A second listen.

to inspire you to look beyond the high street! We discovered a variety of vintage treasures ranging from the Victoriana and Edwardiana periods right up to the eighties! The main mistake people make when dealing with vintage items is simply assuming the appeal of ‘vintage’ itself is enough to be stylish, with so much to choose from at the vintage fair you can afford to put more thought into your purchases to ensure you find something really unique and of sentimental value to yourself! Though some of the clothes were similar to others, you’re guaranteed to find a one of a kind piece in there, look out for trends that have lasted through the years .e.g. We found a lot of chunky knitwear very much like the aran and cable knits that are around at the moment but for half the price! For us, our favourite section by far was the accessories, Rings, necklaces, hats, headbands and tons of fabulous bags that would make your high street outfit that extra bit special! If you missed out on the vintage fair this time round we thoroughly recommend you check out the next one at City Hall in Cardiff on November 7th, otherwise wait till March for the next one in Swansea!

Liz Vining: blodwenversace at ebay. When did you become interested in vintage fashion? I started in Cardiff in 1979 as an antique dealer but then discovered that vintage fashion was making more money. Where do you get all your clothes from? I find them online, at car boot sales, charity shops and ebay is great for vintage finds. What is your favourite piece of vintage? I love all the bags and jewellery!

Vintagekingdom.co.uk How long have you been collecting vintage fashion? The company is 3 months old and situated in Sketty, Swansea but we have been collecting clothes for many years.

What has sold best today and why do you think vintage fashion is so popular currently?

Knitwear is selling really well lately, as we have a lot of chunky knit similar to the high street versions. Vintage is so popular today because it enables people to be unique and own something coveted, more like a treasure than something they will throw away after a few years. Vintage has more value to society. Vintage Bags!

perfect twenty It’s the time of year that every student remembers fondly; bank accounts inhibit loans, nights out are frequent and lectures have barely begun. Freshers has landed, and it’s not just the new students that can get involved. Every year it brings a chance for each student to start afresh and the high street wants to lend a hand in their new beginning. By nearly every store offering 20% discount for a limited time, there barely needs to be an excuse to have a new wardrobe. The Autumn/Winter trends range from shaggy fur gilets, leather shorts and chunky knits, all helping to prevent the dreaded freshers flu. This season it appears to be focusing on the way textures can be mixed, patterns can clash and still a chic look can be inspired. Dolce and Gabbana’s fusion of leopard print and polka dot is an interesting combination that looks sexy but quirky. Designers seem to be challenging the fashionista to experiment with their look and be as fierce as the animalistic catwalks that rocketed through Milan to London. Just look to Chanel’s catwalk, the model’s looked like stylish teddy bears with their fur coats, hats and boots, some might say ridiculous, but maybe Karl Lagerfeld just wanted a bit of warmth this season. If dressing like a yeti does not appeal, look to the colour of the season: camel. It looks elegant and fresh, Chloe did a perfect catwalk celebrating the colour, with sheer blouses and 70s inspired flares. Whatever trends you do decide to channel this season, remember that this is the time to take the leap, the appealing 20% discount won’t be around for long.

With Topman leading the way for men’s high street fashion, their 20% discount enables students to buy their wide range of trendy garments. The trouser of the season is the chino, which comes in an on-trend camel for an alternative or the classic blue jean. Much like the women’s trend this season, chunky knits are popular, from granddad to cable knits, choice is not lacking. The cardigan is also standing firm, alongside the blazer. For shirts, keep p it simple p but accessorize with a bow tie or choose military inspired t-shirts t-shir t-s hir hi irts for or a smart sma sm mart r yet y casual caasual look. look ook.

As freshers week marks the emergence of a whole new student body, it also indicates the beginning of a new season and with it a multitude of fresh trends to get on board with! But don’t let dark skies (or lack of funds) dampen your spirits this Autumn/ Winter because here’s your first lesson on how to add a bit of sparkle into your Winter wardrobe….the student way! I think we can all agree there’s no fun in digging out that same three year old coat that’s taken you through the last of your school years! University is the perfect place to flaunt your individuality through personal style; you can be both savvy and stylish! Be open minded! This autumn as the nights are drawing in, it gives you the perfect excuse to wrap up warm and splurge your loan on some gorgeous knitwear!

Chris Todd, a second year English Language student, epitomises the style of a Swansea student. In his old Topman checked shirt, which he has recycled for the new season, and dark jeans, he looks laid back and comfortable. Isn’t that what being a student is all about? With his River Island dog tag necklace and his Lonsdale trainers, this is a guy who knows how to accessorise. And it needn’t be expensive to look good.

STYLISH STUDENTS SPOTTED --> by EMILY WORTHINGTON

Ozzy Williams, a second year American Studies and English student, personifies what Gok Wan constantly raves about. She proves that wearing high street pieces can still give off a designer feel. Her aviator style jacket from Topshop is straight off the catwalk, but at a tiny percentage of the cost at just £58. Her jeans and baggy top are perfect for campus comfort but they have been accessorised to perfection with her gorgeous River Island sandals. Although it’s not summer in Swansea anymore (was it ever?) the peacock feathers and dark colours mean that on warm autumn days these shoes are a perfect addition to any outfit. Along with her practical but stylish large tasseled Topshop bag, the whole outfit represents great student style.

Chunky knit’s are this autumn’s must have. Be it cardi’s, jumpers, dresses or even socks! An oversized jumper teamed with leggings is your wardrobe’s staple outfit. Knits are appearing in all high street shops and on the catwalks of Missoni and Adam; both demonstrating fabulous collections. You need to get your knitting needles out! Red Herring at Debenhams have a cute cream knitted dress at £34, while Topshop have a variety of aran knits at £48. New look are sporting a black dress for just £19.99 and Tesco’s own brand Florence & Fred have a long line cable cardigan for £18. Dorothy Perkins has a lovely plum boxy jumper for £23. If you are looking for something a bit more vintage, head down to Hobo’s in Swansea or even the local charity shop to find some unique pieces.

Chan’s Journal Last week we introduced Chan, a graduate from Swansea who brought a one way ticket to Thailand and never looked back. Below are extracts from his journal. October 31st, 2008 Touchdown Bangkok, a mere 5 hours ago. My head still hurts from the binge in London last night. But I really don’t give a sh*t. After the last few months in the Diff and nearly a year since I left the days of Diva’s and Time & Envy (Oceana), I couldn’t be asking for much more. Well… at least according to “South East Asia on a Shoe-string.” Got to my hostel of the next two nights right by Khao San Rd. - The “Merry V” Guesthouse; dungeon-sized “twin” room in a three-storey shoddy building, with shared toilets and rusty showers – all for the bargain 2 pounds per person, per night. To be honest, it’s a bit of a rude awakening from the comfort of being home where I don’t slap my face by accident every five minutes trying to crush the ridiculously annoying mosquito that, I’m sure, has been following me since I left the airport. My home for an indefinite amount of time is a grey 90-litre backpack and a smaller rucksack. A pair of sandals, a couple of boardies, a single pair of faded jeans, cargo shorts, underwear, a stack of wife-beaters, two shirts and a towel. All crammed in to act as some make-shift protective barrier for the only three things that matter in the rest of that space; my wallet, camera and passport. It’s the way travelling should be. It’s actually really disorientating right now. The smells are actually unreal. I expected a sexy blend of exotic spices and Chang beer. Maybe a relaxing backpackers atmosphere. It’s that and so much more. The streets are filled with rickety stalls that are surrounded by old, decaying buildings. The lazier locals stand invitingly at the doorstep to their shops while the proactive get up in your face and try to pull me in. Suit shops, Pad-Thai corner, “massage” services, travel agencies, smoothie stands, all once-crazy-and-bright but now just crazy-and-dull colours catch my eye and I wonder which ones are the least dodgy. Occasional warm gusts of wind bring along something we’ve already dubbed “Bangkok waft.” Essentially, the smell of fresh sewage overpowering the stale exhaust fumes of the Tuk-tuks. They’re like mopeds with little carriages fixed on. We just went on one for a quick zip around the city. Took 3 hours to convince the driver (commission hunting little bastard) that I do not want silk socks, Calvin Klein suits nor “sucky sucky” and “special massage.” Either way, these little speedwagons are ridiculously fast, dangerous and sh*t-yourself-fun. Apart from when the driver (Called Jackie, apparently) texts his meanest looking buddy to scare you into buying cufflinks, then tells you he knows where you live. The Land of Smiles is apparently full of things designed to make me shit myself. But that might just be the chilli sauce. I love it so far. Even if it’s only because I’ve yet to be molested by ladyboys, or because the local cuisine was more eastern than my stomach can handle. Time to go find out… November 1st, 2008. 7am. I am friggin’ blotto. No idea why I’d write in this now, no idea where two of the boys are. This place is effin’ mental. Rich is passed out. Wilson and Oli are off the radar, last seen with some weird Canadian flagging down a tuk-tuk to a “party” he knew about somewhere. Started off at one end of Khao San. Everyone wants to sell me Armani-clone suits. Instead I bought some green curry. Met three Irish girls being pestered by said Canadian. Went to one bar, on a high building. Went to another before “dancing” in a club. Someone tried to kiss me – beautiful Thai – probably was a dude. Someone else asked me back to theirs – Definitely was a dude. Maybe I’m getting paranoid, but best stay on my toes and stop wearing wife-beaters. I imagine I won’t do the cultural thing and go see the palaces and stupas and Buddha today/tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing a Muay Thai fight. Doesn’t matter. Chiang Mai (North-bound) next. No idea what to expect, but at least that was the idea. Someone mentioned a 13 hour bus-ride and then a three day walk in a Thai jungle. At least Jackie won’t be there.

The Pub Review....Review? Last Wednesday, Wind Street: “Oh boys boys boys” declared Rob Reese, a disgruntled reader. “Seriously, boys, not banter, ruh ruh ruh. Right, last week, boys, you said the Rhyddings was the best pub in Swansea. Boys, I am not happy”, he insisted whilst taking a step back, propping hands on hips and shaking his head in disgust. Then, waving a finger in his usual fashion, he persisted “If I want to go out on the lash and have some banter central station you go to the Bryn. And Noah’s Yard, boys, what were you thinking? Boom boom boom, box box box, banter banter, botanical gardens, ruh ruh ruh, hello treacle”. Were we right to declare the Rhyddings the best pub in Swansea? Were you angry at your local being overlooked? E-mail us at travel.waterfront@hotmail.co.uk to support your favourite pub in Swansea and the results will be announced next issue. If, however, you agree with Rob, you can usually find him in the botanical gardens most mornings with last night’s curry spilt down his front.

Ein Mass Bitte! If you were to visit Theresienwiese, a 42 hectare park, just south west of Munich’s city centre, on a normal day, you might find yourself rather bored. Unless you happen to be a connoisseur of urban parks (and let’s be honest, who would admit to that) the only interesting thing in Theresienwiese is the 60ft high, climbable “Bavaria statue” which overlooks the park and central Munich. But despite laying dormant for most of the year, Theresienwiese, for the last 200 years, has been one of the most important places in the world. For one simple fact, it’s the location of Oktoberfest, by far the greatest beer festival the world has ever seen, indeed, with six million people visiting it every year, it’s considered to be the world’s largest fair of any kind. Cavernous tents filled with drunken Bavarians in this seasons lederhosen dominate this simple park in Munich for the 16 days leading up to the first weekend in October. That’s right, you missed it! But fear not, for all its hype and fame, Oktoberfest in reality is just an excuse to pack out Munich with millions of tourists, charge them top dollar (usually around €9 a mass) for special strength beer and an open season for hoteliers with Euros in their eyes to part unsuspecting tourists from their hard earned cash. When Oktoberfest ends, the grand, colossal buildings of central München remain. Wandering around the CBD, it would be easy to believe that nothing has touched them since their construction, many centuries ago. It’s almost impossible to believe, that this city was bombed to the edge of the abyss a mere 70 years ago. Destroyed by the very ideology that was sparked in its own beer halls just 20 years before. In fact, it was only recently, that some of the last remnants of Nazism were removed from the Hofbräuhaus, the swastika tiles which had controversially adorned its floors and the photograph of Hitler as a baby were finally trashed in 2006. But despite its shadowy past, Hitler’s local, is a fantastic place to visit. Supposedly the biggest pub in the world, the interior of the Hofbräuhaus seemed, to me, to be disappointingly small. But this initial disappointment was instantly quelled at the sight of a round of masses (the standard litre of lager served in beer halls all across Bavaria, in my opinion, the perfect sized glass). Be warned, if you think that Carling and Stella are good lagers, do not go to Munich, in fact it’s probably wise for you to avoid Germany altogether. After tasting this golden ambrosia, a Pandora’s Box will be opened inside your mouth, thrusting upon you an insatiable lust for the best Bavarian lager, never again will you be satisfied by the piβ water that passes for lager in most British pubs. But it isn’t the beer that makes the Hofbräuhaus unique and special, the beer served here is average on Bavarian standards. Better beer is served at the Augustiner Grossgaststätten, the Weisses Brauhaus and the Lowenbrau Haus, hell, even the airport bar serves liquid heaven, Airbrau, only available at Munich airport. No, what makes the Hofbräuhaus a sacred shrine and a monument to drunkenness is the atmosphere. Whether you’re in a three way Maβ downing contest against a group of locals and a gaggle of Americans, with the entire Hofbräuhaus cheering you on (a contest in which we, the England and Wales drinking board won), or making friends with some Bavarian teenagers who wondered why you poured pepper in your beer, you’ll always make some friends or enemies during your time in the Hofbräuhaus. >>

The fountains of Munich’s city centre, traditionally 5 euros are given to anyone that runs through them The morning after hitting the beer halls, passing out in the gutter, falling over invisible wires in a phantom park and projectile vomiting straight into your own face, and then sleeping in it (yes, that actually happened), it’s unlikely that you’ll want to return to the scene of the crime right away. Luckily, you can enjoy yourself in Munich without becoming hopelessly squiffy. About a 40 minutes train ride out of the city is the Allianz Arena, this multi coloured, squashed bubble of a stadium is the home of 1860 München and its minnow of a rival, FC Bayern Munich. Even if there isn’t a match on, the Allianz Arena is worth a visit simply for a wonder round and a trip to the mega stores. If football’s really not your thing, Munich is full of exquisite architecture, some of which dates back to the 13th century, including Munich’s most imposing landmark, the Frauenkirche. A 20,000 seat cathedral, built when the population of Munich was 17,000. The 99m south tower can be climbed by members of the public and offers unique views of Munich and the distant Bavarian Alps to the south. Munich offers so much to see and do, that it’s the perfect trip for even the non drinker among us, but don’t go for Oktoberfest, go for the real thing.

Hannah’s Journal For the last couple of weeks I have been cramming for mid terms, so it’s been pretty dull, still, a few non stressful days has made up for it. Thursday was by far the best night out we’ve had in Albuquerque! After searching the net, we managed to get hold of $30 tickets to see Vampire Weekend! However, the gig was being held at Hard Rock; a casino miles out into the desert on a Native American reservation, which meant forking out for a $40 taxi journey. After quick margaritas at the casino bar we went to see Vampire Weekend and the support band, Beach House, who were absolutely incredible live. We weren’t close enough to the stage so we used our British Charm with the security guard (“we came all the way from the UK just to see them!”) to get right up front! They played all the classics, and were on for at least an hour... I now love them even more!! We have also spent some time in a little town nearby called Santa Fe. It looked exactly like the movie set of an old spaghetti western. Every weekend Native Americans from the reservations come to sell beads and artwork in the Plaza, some fat Texan tourists were randomly strolling round in Stetson cowboy hats, and a horse and cart was struggling to compensate for the load. Luckily every winter Santa Fe gets buried in snow, so we are really looking forward to skiing and snowboarding there in a few months!! We are also excited for this weekend as we are going to see Albuquerque’s biggest attraction. Every year Albuquerque is the host to the biggest and best Balloon Fiesta, thought to be the most photographed event in the World. Thousands of tourists from all over the globe come to watch hundreds of hot air balloons floating gently across the Rio Grande and then they all randomly land in back yards and parking lots across the city. I hope everyone had an awesome Freshers. I remember my first one, I was a pisshead!

What About... 5 _ As the well of originality and intrigue appears to have long dried up in Hollywood, it is to world cinema that true horror, chills and spills fans must now turn to. With the J-Horror craze (and its unbearable remakes) now having had its day, it is gasbord of future horror classics. 2007’s ‘The Orphanage’ saw a brutally effective return to the traditional style of telling a haunting ghost story to cause shivers down our spine with often nothing more than the power of suggestion. Abandoning the ‘blood and guts lust’ of modern horror in favour of well rounded and sympathetic characters, with the mantra of ‘less is more’ in terms of special effects to create a chillingly effective ghost story that stays with you until well after the credits. ] > Ryan Reynolds ] > Paul Conroy is an American truck driver, contracted to work in Iraq. We learn through the course of the film that his convoy was attacked by a group of Iraqis. We join the character when he wakes up after the attack, buried in a coffin with just a lighter and a foreign phone with limited battery life for company. ] > This claustrophobic thriller will have you leaving the cinema gasping for air. The beginning of the film enticed nervous titters from the audience. For about two minutes the entire screen is pitch black with barely any sound and then suddenly terrified, heavy breathing and a muffled scuffling fills your ears. There is a short relief from the darkness when a very dim light illuminates Reynolds petrified face. The suspense of that first few minutes was an ingenious addition to the film by director Rodrigo CortÊs which causes the audience to experience exactly what the character is going through. The emotional range of Reynolds is extraordinary, and he excels in a role that differs from anything we have ever seen him in. It may have been a risky idea to set an entire film in a box, without even the escape of a flashback scene, but it definitely paid off. 3 You won’t be six-footunder with boredom during this spectacle of suspense.

] > Five strangers get stuck in an office lift; one of them has a very dark secret.

] 3 In order to free herself from the pain of her divorce and a midlife crisis, Liz (Roberts) ventures on a global voyage of selfdiscovery.

] > After a string of disappointing films it is refreshing to finally see M. Night Shyamalan attached to something worthy of praise. However, it is director John Erik Dowdle who deserves most of the credit. He competently directs the murder mystery in a way that is creepy yet engaging, capturing the claustrophobia of the film and successfully creating the tension necessary to keep the audience entertained. The small name cast also deliver high quality performances and succeed in allowing the audience to empathise with their unlikeable characters. Shyamalan’s script provides a successful horror premise, and gives away several red herrings to keep the audience guessing at the identity of the murderer without making it too obvious. However, the emotional core of the film falls somewhat flat, and the supernatural elements are far too over-played. Also, an unnecessary narration ruins some of the tension, and diminishes some of the film’s credibility. Overall however, the film is entertaining and tense. However, it’s not likely to stay with you for too long once you leave the cinema. 3 Sinfully good

] 3 Roberts returns to the silver screen in her first solo lead role since Erin Brockovich, in a role that attempts to remind us why she was such a huge star in the first place. The result is on the whole a failure. Her attempts to display the quirks of her ‘kooky’ personality do not reach further than smiling far too much when eating spaghetti. The film is, as the title suggests, divided into three sections. Liz strives to promote overeating in Italy, selfless devotion in India, and carnal knowledge in Bali. The aesthetics of the film are a pleasing display of a world of colour and scenery as you follow Liz on her travels. At 133 minutes the film drags severely, the sight of all the food in Italy and Bardem in Bali being the only points of interest. The role of James Franco as Liz’s boyfriend David does raise an unintentional smile due to some hilarious scenes of appalling acting and various cultures of the world with Liz falling in love with everything that is different from her home life. It is not the inspirational story of realising dreams it intends to be. 3 Watch if you enjoy seeing food, scenery and Julia Roberts cry.

$FWRU 3URÀOH %HQ %DUQHV Ben Barnes is most famously known for his role in The Chronicles of Narnia series playing Prince Caspian. His character directs the magical battles of Narnia and it is his fate to save the land. He has recently starred in Dorian Gray - an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. In this he takes the lead role of a young, innocent man who pledges his soul to his portrait to remain as youthful as he appears that day. He is however corrupted and while his life takes a not-so-innocent turn, his portrait – rather than his face – takes the hits of his sins and his age. This film sees Barnes play a completely different role to his Prince Caspian character. As Dorian Gray, Barnes

has a much more mature role to play and a different audience to appeal to. Other notable films he has appeared in are Easy Virtue, Stardust and Bigga than Ben. Gemma Hockey

3 ] 3 Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Carry Mulligan, Frank Langella ] 3 The film is an introspection into the economical climate prior to the crisis. Young Wall Street trader Jake Moore shakes hands with disgraced banker Gordon Gekko with the purpose of revenging the death of his mentor and reuniting Gekko with his daughter, Jake’s fiancĂŠe. ] 3 As Oliver Stone’s sequel of 1987 ‘Wall Street’, it is unavoidable to miss this insight into a world that shook our destinies for the last two years. Not only is the vaguely documentary nature of this film urging viewers to draw comparisons to Michael Moore’s productions, but also the thoroughly entertaining story is motivating you to watch it. At the beginning, the audience is introduced to the bustling world of downtown New York. Nevertheless, by the end of the film, the city ends up devouring the ones that can’t play up to the game: Jake’s mentor kills himself; the moral culprit ends up in the hands of attorneys; Gekko’s daughter is fooled again by his fake penitence. Ultimately, it is the advocacy of greed that encourages bankers to bet for more, at the stake of thousands of jobs being lost and innovations being discarded as unproductive. 3 Maybe it’s too early to look back on the world crisis, but as Stone puts it, ‘money never sleeps’.

Let’s Talk About... Twin Town Dylan Thomas, scary drug dealers, psychedelic hotdogs and dodgy policemen are all in a day’s work for the Lewis twins in Twin Town. The film follows two brothers as they go up against rich nightclub owner Bryn to get compensation for their father who was injured whilst carrying out work at one of Bryn’s various businesses. The story takes on a darker tone when the twins’ exploits result in Bryn’s cohorts accidentally blowing up the family caravan with the family inside. The twins then exact their revenge through a number of nasty methods including a Godfather-esqe beheading of a poodle. Since its release over ten years ago, Twin Town has gained a massive cult following and featured the debut of actor Rhys Ifans. The film is full of hilarious moments such as a farmer and his dog after consuming a hotdog with ‘everything on it’. One of the main reasons that the film has gained such a massive cult following is its endless quotability and the culture that surrounds the film. The film features many Swansea locations that will be very familiar to some viewers and features many real life Swansea residents in cameo roles. Twin Town is a story that shows the importance of family life and the downfalls of revenge. It is also unafraid to ask some of life’s more important questions such as “Why is it that a 2 litre bottle of coke costs 27 pence, but a 1 litre bottle costs 37 pence? or “Do you know what they do to you if you’re caught doing drugs in Morocco? If Dylan Thomas once wrote that Swansea is “an ugly, lovely town then Twin Town is an ugly, lovely film that should not be missed by anyone. I dare you to watch Twin Town and not quote it to your friends for days to come. Rhys Williams

to the Editor

Dear Editor, It was an interesting read in the Waterfront about the Lads Mag ban imposed by the SU. The reason for the ban lads mags objectify women. While I fully agree with this statement, will there be a ban on other magazines that are on sale? As Sam Gardner pointed out, many ladies magazines are full of pictures that objectify men. Moreover will there be a ban on magazines aimed at gay men which also feature pictures of provocatively dressed men? If the SU wished to implement a ban on & $ $ then there should be a blanket ban on all publications that include revealing pictures of the human body, irrespective of gender. Sincerely Hedd Wyn John (Postgraduate History student)

Thank you for your letter,

Simmo Says... Firstly, Let me say, Hello...and Welcome to what will be the greatest 3 or more years of your life. (In my case, a lot more than 3!) By now, you may understand that your love for Swansea Uni is starting to increase with every blurry visit to Tooters, every guilty feeling the morning after as you check yourself into the GUM and every stumbling second of walking through the student village wearing nothing but Speedos and fake tan. To those of you returning....nice to see your re-sits went well. You’ll have noticed some developments over the summer.....Ents are now know as Student Swansea Events and someone’s gone nuts with planning permission around here. Some things however haven’t changed....It still rains here...you still can’t buy a magazine on campus that contains whimsical text and the odd photo of a girl with her chest potatoes out (But I’m working on that)...And we’re still without doubt, the greatest university students in the world! So, Freshers 2010....You Are Crazy!! In the last two weeks Swansea has seen a 2000 person mosh-pit at Fresh & Free, Oceana getting covered in marker pen as we go Freshbook crazy & I’ll never forget walking into Caswell to find every single person from each floor in one kitchen chanting ‘Caswell, what is your profession...’ The great news is, there is plenty more to come...more opportunity for you to wake up next to a smurf with a badly drawn moustache...more opportunity for you to visit the doctors surgery with a girl you only know as Thursday night....and more opportunity for you to snap your key in the front door as you fall over yourself leaving everyone else locked out of the building!!

Simmo Says....This Is Swansea!

The original temporary ban was introduced while we investigated the University’s Dignity at work/study policy and the final ban was then voted on at the Student General meeting by students. There was an open discussion and debate amongst students who attended the meeting on the issue of ‘Lads Mags’ being sold in the Students Union. The magazines in question are openly focused on portraying sexually explicit negative images of women and can be seen to be categorized as soft porn. The Ladies magazines you refer to are not motivated in objectifying men as such do not break the Dignity at work/study policy. The next SGM is Tuesday the 19th of October so please come along so you can get involved in SU decisions and put your view across. Kind Regards, Raegan Healy | Women’s Officer/ Swyddog Menywod Email; womensofficer@swansea-union. co.uk

WANT TO ASK A QUESTION? THINK YOU HAVE A COMMENT? SEND A LETTER! Editor@swanseaunion.co.uk

Dear Hedd Wyn, Thank you for your letter to The Waterfront dated Wednesday 29th September 2010, regarding our story on the “Lads Mag Ban that was voted through at an SGM in June. This has been a very interesting topic for the paper to cover, particularly because the original complaint, that started the ball rolling to get the magazines removed from Student Union shop shelves came from an academic member of staff rather than a student. The point you raise in your letter is a valid one and one that I did bring up with the SU and my reporters when we originally covered the story back in May. If magazines such as Zoo and Nuts are to be removed because their " & ! subscriptions such as Diva, GT, The Sun, The Star, The Sport, numerous women’s and even some surf magazines (that show rippling topless muscular men riding waves) should also be called into question and possibly removed for fear they objectify both women and men? Equality? Another reason why the original complaint fell on the SU about these “lads mag publications was because of the phone adverts in the back of them. If this is also to be taken into consideration then we might as well ban the Evening Post (as well as other red top newspapers already mentioned) from SU shops, as the paper also carries personal adverts students could call like in Zoo and Nuts. A more worrying aspect for me

/ the people who feel the need to ban everything THEY don’t like forcing other people to follow THEIR lead. Personally I can’t stand the sight of bottles of Sambuka (related to one too ~ 2 Millwall shirts, but I don’t feel the need to ban them out of my life. If I don’t like it, I don’t look at it! Maybe rather than people forcing THEIR beliefs onto others they should remember that they have the freedom of choice not to look, touch or purchase the magazine. On a personal note, I have never subscribed to these magazines myself and never really wanted to as I am more of an F1, Newsweek and National Geographic (which I should add can also contain nudity in it some issues!) kind of reader. However because of the ban going through I feel I am now more likely to go out of my way and buy one of these subscriptions just to ensure that my freedom of choice is still valued. Anyone agree? I have been in touch with the SU for a comment on your letter, their response is as follows. Sincerely James Snaith Editor

ROWERS ON THE PULL FOR THE NEW SEASON Richard Hasley Sports Reporter A NEW academic year can only mean one thing - another season packed with races for the university rowing team. Many familiar faces within the club may have graduated or moved onto pastures new, and the committee may have retained only one person from last year’s incarnation, but enthusiasm for the coming year remains as high as ever. Having signed up around ninety new rowers at the fresher’s fayre, there will surely be no shortage of talent for the new crew captains to choose from. Matching, let alone exceeding last year’s feats, will be no small task as the club looks to grow even further both within Swansea University and BUCS competition as a whole. Last year, the senior women’s team

Senior Women’s Captain Phoebe Robertson said, “We worked hard as a team all last season and BUCS in $ off and we’re very proud of what we achieved. Men’s crews also held their own throughout last year, winning categories

at both Monmouth Head and Regatta races, and giving strong displays at the BUCS Championships. Aside from this, there was also victory over Cardiff University in the annual Welsh Boat Race as the showpiece event returned to Swansea. Having now won the Varsity event two years in a row, retaining it for an unprecedented third year will be a top priority for new Senior Men’s Captain Kain Adey. “Varsity is key for us as a club, we work towards it all year, and it should set us up for a good BUCS regatta campaign the following week,’ he said. This extends to the other three crews in the club as well because, as it stands, only the senior men hold a Varsity victory since the competition began. # $
