EVENT F***ED BY SU By Adele MacGregor News Editor A CONTORVERSIAL event sparked mass debate within the Students’ Union. Heated discussions erupted just after New Year when Swansea Student Events (SSE) took the decision to controversially call their Valentine’s day event ‘F*** me, I’m Horny’, with the tag line ‘I Love Being Single’. The name was a cheeky play on words based on David Guetta’s brand ‘F*** Me, I’m Famous’ which Entertainments Co-coordinator Jamie Tagg says is easily recognisable by students. (David Guetta is best known for his club favorites ‘Memories’ ft Kid Cudi and ‘Sexy Bitch’ ft Ludacris.) Tagg told The Waterfront that what initially appears as a crude name for a Valentine’s Day event was aimed at being nothing more than a good student marketing strategy, attempting to provide a decent student night. It appears SSE is not alone in picking up on the appeal of Guetta’s brand. An event company called ‘Original Sin’ recently introduced a weekly event titled ‘F*** Me I’m Fresh’ to Universities in the UK including Plymouth and Exeter. It is understood that Jamie Tagg and the entertainment department looked to base the night on these ideas.
student night for celebrating Valentine’s day, acting as a strong rival to an event
taking place in Swansea the same week. Entertainment Manager Russell Wade told The Waterfront the reason they changed the event from the usual ‘Lock and Key’ is due to complaints received from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Society who felt excluded by the connotations of the night. SSE felt they needed to provide a fresh night for the student body. Attempting to defy the traditional notions of Valentine’s Day, the night was instead aimed at the single students who want an event on a day that usually centers on loved up couples. The Waterfront understands that the event had originally been approved by members of the Students’ Union but some sabbatical members were not informed of the event and its connotations until after the promotion had begun. SU President Luke Young said “We have a responsibility to ensure that all events associated with the Union are in line with the values and long term strategy to be a campaigning organization that wins for students, the event runs counter to that therefore we requested it to be changed It is standard procedure within the Students Union that for any event to take place it needs to get majority backing
before going ahead and in this instance, SSE did not have the sign off despite believing from previous conversations that they had been given the go ahead. >
IRONIC NAME CHANGE: Event in Oceana now branded as Censored A Step Too Far?
ÂŁ400 spent on Events original branding
SSE were asked to rebrand the night by the Students’ Union but want to assure students that the content of the evening will remain the same and further insist that changing the name to ‘Censored’, which was agreed with sabbatical
or disrespect the decision of the Union.

WAS THIS a responsible decision made by the Students Union or is it political correctness gone mad? Following the ban on lags mags in the University, it appears the overruling of this event is part of a bigger picture. Students have observed that though FHM is no longer on sale, the energy

Editorial Hello and a belated welcome back! I hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year, a distant hazy memory for most of you as I am sure reality hit hard when revision and exams brought everything into focus over the past few weeks. Don’t worry about that now, you’re free! SECOND CAMPUS GIVEN GREEN LIGHT Vox Pops What’s your opinion? Do you think “F*** Me, I’m Horny would have been an appropriate name for the Valentines Ball?

looks set to get the go-ahead after gaining Assembly funding. The Bay Science and Innovation Campus, located off Fabian Way, is set to begin construction after a delay over funding. Doubts over the campus arose after the Assembly Government were unable to complete an agreement over funding. As a result oil giant BP, who are offering the land free of charge, expressed concern and revealed that their offer was “time sensitive.â€? With the Assembly Government rumoured to be pledging ÂŁ400 million,
proposed campus which will be built in two phases. Student Union President, Luke Young said, “We are excited by the opportunity for future students and the services that the second campus will provide. “We will be working with university management to ensure that that the plans are fully thought through, including plans on appropriate transport links between the two sites. The focus of the new campus is to allow academic researchers at the university to collaborate with companies such as Rolls-Royce. This will allow academic researchers and industrial researchers to work together on a single site.
SIN CITY: ACCESS DENIED By Laura Richards and Simon Andrew Deputy News Editor and News Reporter SIN CITY has come under scrutiny over their lack of disabled facilities inside the building. Despite disabled access into the building, once inside disabled students "
without aid. When The Waterfront approached Sin City enquiring about access to the club, it was revealed that they did not have a working lift and previously Safety Stewards had carried students up the stairs, although they admitted that this was not ideal. The only lift in the building is not suitable for passengers and has been out of service for a number of years resulting in stairway access only. Consequently disabled students either avoid the venue or on previous occasions have been carried between levels by safety stewards. Amy Gee, Project Manager for the Interaxions scheme which ensures equal opportunities for disabled students considers this problem to be a priority and in urgent need of a solution. On carrying students up the stairs she commented, “This is dangerous and degrading for the student and there is "
procedures. The student affected was understood to be upset but did not wish to comment any further. Student Union Manager, Stuart Rice understands the necessity for disabled access and as a result the lift has recently been provisionally assessed and will require extensive works and possible replacement to become adequate. The Union will now review the options available and will continue to investigate the matter. However, it is noted that however adequate the lift was it would be unable to be used in any form of evacuation procedures. The Waterfront understands that the delay in developments is due to the Student Union not holding the full lease of the property. Rice reiterated that the Union is doing everything possible to make improvements in Sin City but due to their current circumstances regarding the property this may take longer than hoped. The Student Union and Interaxions are currently liaising over the most achievable solution, with the matter hopefully resolved as soon as possible. If you have been affected by any disability access problems around the city contact The Waterfront by emailing editor@swansea-union.co.uk or news@ waterfrontonline.co.uk

It is forecasted that the project is expected to pump more than ÂŁ3 billion into the regional economy over the next decade. When approached by The Waterfront, the majority of students approved of the new campus. However, second-year Physics student, Mark Evans commented “I believe that BP should focus their efforts on clearing up the messes they have created instead of weedling into the British education system.â€?
BLOODHOUND RACER
By Desirae Gostlin News Reporter A WELSH team of scientists with the help of Swansea University students will attempt to obliterate the current land speed record in South Africa in 2012. The College of Engineering at Swansea University is responsible for researching the aerodynamics of Bloodhound SSC (Super Sonic Car) project. Swansea University has the technology to assist with the research needed to keep the vehicles driver safe during his journey which could reach speeds of up to1000mph. The research conducted by the college was then passed onto BAE System and Airbus, who took the aerodynamic developments further. The idea for the project comes from Lord Drayson, the UK’s former science minister with a wish to generate more student interest in the subjects of math, science and engineering.
“The consequences if we don’t inspire the next generation are that we will wither as a country, Lord Drayson said. Working on the Bloodhound project for three and a half years, Dr Ben Evans told The Waterfront “We’re using this as a vehicle to encourage more kids to take up science and engineering, the big goal is to inspire kids, Wales has a proud history of breaking

WORLD NEWS ROUND-UP Giffords’ “lightening speed progress By Adele Macgregor In the latest big step to recovery, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords left intensive care last week for News Editor
the head during the shootings on January 8 in Tucson, Arizona. While meeting with constituents outside a Safeway supermarket in Tucson, Giffords was allegedly shot at point-blank range by 22-year old Jared Loughner. Doctors have said that Giffords, whose progress is said to be moving at “lightening speed, will have a valve inserted into her breathing tube to help her talk. The US Representative was moved to TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital to begin physical, occupational and speech therapy. Those who were killed in the shooting included Chief Judge John Roll, Giffords’ community outreach director Gabe Zimmerman, and the granddaughter of former Major League Baseball player and manager Dallas Green, 9 year old Christina-Taylor Green. Loughner, who was arrested at the scene, pleaded not guilty to federal charges of attempting to assassinate Gifford and two of her aides. Loughner also faces other federal murder charges.
Gay marriage ruling
W O
By Daniel Matcham The French constitutional court has opted to retain World News Reporter the ban on gay marriage. The Constitutional Council reached their decision despite six years of strong outside challenges to the system. Figures revealed that a majority of the French population were in favour of gay marriage being legalised. Eight judges, including two women, presided over the case, which highlighted the cause, following the 2007 annulment of an illegal marriage in 2004 between two gay men in Bègles, conducted by Green Party mayor NoĂŤl Mamère. The ban has been challenged in more recent times by Corinne Cestino and Sophie Hasslauer, who have four children in a partnership – which is " % The court considered articles in the civil code which only allows heterosexual relationships. Pro-democracy party dissolved By Daniel Macham The Supreme Court in Burma has decided to World News Reporter stand by its decision to dissolve the National League for Democracy (NLD) from political power. The pro-democracy party, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, failed to register for the most recent election held in the country in November 2010 and has been deemed unlawful. The decision has left the NLD outside of formal politics. Under the court conditions, the NLP has no grounds for appeal. The 2010 election in Burma was considered by many to be fraudulent, despite promises that it was part of the so-called ‘Roadmap to Democracy’. The Union Solidarity and Development Party took 76% of the vote, but it was overshadowed by the National Democratic Front and the Democratic Party both withdrawing. The new, military dominated parliament opened in Naypyidaw, the capital of Burma, on 31 January. The previous election held in Burma was in 1990 and saw the NLD take 58.7% of the vote, with the second party – the National Unity Party (NUP) – winning only a 21.7% share. A military junta refused to acknowledge the result, however, and the country was subsequently governed under a dictatorship.
Mubarak faces angry backlash Cyclone Yasi Wreaks Havoc Protests in Egypt began on Tuesday, January By Kate Wilson World News Reporter 25th when thousands of Egyptians gathered in Cairo’s central Tahrir Square after an internet campaign, inspired by the uprising in Tunisia, called for a “day of revolt. More than a week of demonstrations has left about 300 people dead according to UN estimates. In a speech given by Mr Mubarak on February 1, he promised to leave at the next polls, and pledged constitutional reform, saying he would devote his remaining time in power to ensuring a peaceful transition to his successor. “This is my country. This is where I lived, I fought and defended its land, sovereignty and interests, and I will die on its soil, he said. Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei dismissed Mr Mubarak’s move as “a trick to stay in power, and Tahrir Square protesters have vowed to continue their demonstrations until Mr Mubarak quits. Cyclone Yasi, the worst in Australia for more than 100 years, has seen more than 30,000 people evacuated to makeshift shelters. Five of seven rescue shelters were reported to be full in the hours leading up to the cyclone. Some residents opted to remain at home. ‚

COMMENT United we stand, divided we fall By Columnist Elena Cresci
There’s no denying that students are facing some tough times ahead. November and December saw thousands of students take to the streets of London to voice their opposition to the rise of tuition fees. Even as Parliament made the decision to lift the cap, the mantra among students everywhere was ‘this is just the beginning’, with sit-ins and further protests cropping up all over the country. Never in my time at University have I witnessed such a strong student movement. The Metropolitan Police expected 20,000 students on the tenth of November, 2010; over 50,000 turned up. & ' " ^"

education, but that of those who aren’t even close to entering University yet. For once, we’re holding politicians directly accountable for their broken promises, something that sorely needed to be done. However, the cracks are beginning to show. The Manchester protest on
the 29th of January saw NUS President Aaron Porter heckled with anti-Semitic insults and calls for his resignation. A murmur of dissent is spreading throughout the activists, with some very unhappy with Porter’s tactics in the face of the Government’s decision to life the cap. At the time of writing, three
student’s Unions have already taken a Œ
trigger a national conference. Porter’s critics are calling for more aggressive campaigning, more sit-ins, more walkouts. Truthfully, I think much of the negativity hurled towards Porter comes from people who think that the violence
exhibited at many of these protests has given strength to the movement. The inherent problem with violent direct action is that it utterly undermines the entire campaign and tars every single student, no matter what they do, with the same brush. All that the British media concentrated on in December were scenes of students smashing windows, setting things on < €

rules of course, but that’s what made it so brilliant. What we sorely need is less violence and more creative campaigns that will really hit home. We’ve proved here in Swansea that we are capable
of uniting peacefully for a common cause, with the Funeral for Modern Languages last term, and the Welsh Assembly Government has listened to the students of Wales and agreed to pay the difference for Welsh students, but we still need justice for English students who could be paying up to £9,000 a year for their degree. It’s hard to forget that despite such innovative campaigns, top up fees were introduced back in 2004, and the cap was lifted in 2010. It’s understandable that campaigners would be frustrated, feeling that all that we’ve done so far has counted for nothing, from voting Liberal Democrat to marching in London and other cities. Hurling insults at Aaron Porter clearly achieves nothing. Instead of allowing this frustration to divide us, we need now, more than ever, to unite despite differences and see this through to the end. Do you want inspiration for healthy recipes that won’t leave you out of pocket? Look no further because this February Uplands Diner is inspiring the students of Swansea with these culinary tasters. That being said, after discovering more
about these lessons, I believe they are an enlightened idea for any student looking to learn a thing or two in the kitchen. The objective of the lessons is to promote healthy eating, which is perfect for those looking to shed a few pounds this year. Theatre: An Inspector Calls
Theatre: Comedy with Stephen K Amos
Emma Hislop
Kate Godding
This February, Swansea’s own award winning, ametuer drama group, Swansea Little, will be performing the much loved play An Inspector Calls. An Inspector calls is a moral murder mystery written by J.B Priestly. Novelist, dramatist and broadcaster, Priestly was born in 1894 and died in 1984. The play is considered to be his most recognised piece of work with it first being performed in the Soviet Union and has been a success in theatres worldwide ever since. The plot is split up into three sections opening with the Birling Family celebration of the engagement of Shelia Birling to Gerald Croft. J.B Priestly makes his exploration of moral attitudes apparent with his characterisation of Eric Birling, who uses the celebrations to endorse his drinking problem while the rest of the family turn a blind eye. The moral implications of the attitudes of the conventional upper class Edwardian family are explored and challenged further with the entrance of Inspector Goole who reveals that a pretty young girl has been found dead by suicide. The wealthy Edwardian middle class family deny any involvement with the death, but, throughout the course of the evening, the Inspector attempts to expose how every member of the nights celebrations are implicated in Eva Smiths death. Through this interruption of the established character hierarchy, the Inspector gradually reveals a dark mystery surrounding the play that audiences
will find both endearing and chilling. The play focuses around one central theme: “If men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in blood and fire and anguish.â€? The performance is the latest of fantastic productions from Swansea Little Theatre company, a registered charity with a membership of over 150 actors and technicians. The company have a dedicated team of volunteers who give up their time to run The Dylan Thomas Theatre, a beautiful little theatre on the waterfront, established in 1924. It is Swansea’s only waterside theatre venue at the heart of the Maritime Cultural Quarter. Dylan Thomas being a member/actor in the 1930’s, the drama group is a testament to the strong community people have always related to the characteristics of Swansea. In an ever developing city, it is refreshing to know that there are still people willing to volunteer and take part in our classic Welsh tradition of working together to build great communities. The theatre has recently been refurbished, following the award of a substantial Arts Council of Wales grant, and welcomes all dance societies, community groups and visitors. To find out more about Swansea Little and about becoming a member, check out their website www.swansealittletheatre. org.uk. Their performance of An Inspector Calls will be showing from Thursday 16th - Saturday 19th February at 7.30pm, tickets are priced at ÂŁ8.50.
Stephen K Amos’s new comedy tour The Best Medicine ran at Swansea’s Grand Theatre on February 1st 2011. Stephen, with his all-beige suit and salmon pink shirt underneath seemed to be having a comical breakdown in the middle of the stage. With the audience heckling and joining in, Stephen bounced back with witty comments and insults involving every single member of the audience right up to those sat in the upper circle. He labelled a group of 16 year old boys Snap, Crackle and Pop to much delight from the older members of the audience, then was later told to ‘grow up’ when using the microphone as a phallic object! This constant changing of perspectives is what makes Amos appealing to all members of the audience and such a great comic. His material was not too controversial so it was easy to laugh at without feeling like you were doing something wrong. Much of his material was copied from his television appearance’s which was a bit disappointing, yet it seemed very different when watching him perform it live with the electric atmosphere and banter to and from the audience. At times Stephen did pause for an inordinate amount of time whilst laughing at his own jokes which was a bit off putting; there was a particularly awkward part where a woman was out of control with laughter and the rest the audience were laughing at her rather than Amos. This puerile comedy, although funny, was not what I expected from a headline comedian. “See? We’re laughing. About what? Nothing. Does it matter? Who cares?
seemed to be a recurring theme of the night, as much of the laughter was from audience participation rather than Amos’ material; his giggling interaction with the audience is hilarious but you might not laugh as much as Amos himself who seems to be having the ‘best night of my life’. His skill at working the room however is dynamite. This is perhaps his key weapon on stage; his fox like reactions to spin a line is undoubtedly enviable. However, the material he provides is pretty generic and similar to other, modern comedians. His constant harassment of his Nigerian born parents who abused him as one of their ten thousandor-so children, read his diary at his twin sisters wedding and moved when he ran away from home so he could
for the audience to relate to and unrealistic. He brought along his old diary, stating childish whims such as, ‘got dumped today, I will never love again’ and ‘When I am old, about 21 or 22, I want to be king’ yet self proclaiming himself as ‘more of a queen’ had the audience in stitches. This diary was used as a crutch when there were pauses in the routine which was a great idea and met with much laughter and clapping. All in all it was a great night; Amos’ skill to make
the audience entertain themselves is undeniably clever. Although his material is entertaining, it is perhaps not what keeps him employed as a comic? Even so, his ability as a dazzling host is what kept the audience breathless from laughter and perhaps coming back for more when he returns to the Grand Theatre later on in the year.

In looking for a good read over the Christmas holidays I was immediately attracted to The Winter House. The novel, written in third person narrative, focuses on Marnie, a middle aged woman called to the bedside of her dying friend, whom she has not seen for more than twenty years. From the beginning, we are immediately enveloped by the extremely honest emotions of Marnie. Throughout, the narrative teases us with information as "
present and between Marnie’s memories and Ralph’s. The story explores the strong bond of friendship, which is often touching and emotional. As well as this, we are privy to the contrast of the family lives of each character, added to a thorough examination of love, which is often unreciprocated. All in all, when the truth of the past does come out it is slightly anti-climatic, however, the reader is still kept interested until the end. The style of the novel is very descriptive, emotional and at times brutal in its reality. Although the story focuses on the past, it does not move away from the reality of Ralph’s situation, and the imagery of his illness is often horrifying; “There was an odour about him that caught in Marnie’s nostrils; soap wouldn’t remove it. Post Break-Up Sex draws on the likes of The Ramones to create an indie production with their own punk and roll style stamped upon it. The single portrays a sense of abandonment and youthfulness similar to Blink or Weezer, and effectively represents timeless guitar pop. Before I start this review, I’m going to have a brief preamble. In true fairytale fashion, the indie-pop duo are simply acoustically enchanting and are at the centre, the very heart of every unspoilt fantasy. Nevertheless, it’d be a disgrace to stamp The Scene Aesthetic as a clichĂŠ. Pleasantly
inspiring, both Torres’ saccharine vocals and Bowley have exceptional voices, but jointly are unique-- a talent which allows them to sing beautifully together whilst achieving both euphony and harmony in such a way that is remarkably unusual in two highly contrasting male voices. their 2006 album Building Homes from What We’ve Known, the highly anticipated third full-length album Brother, released in late 2010 introduces a reliably consistent chain of acoustic songs about make-ups and break-ups and other sickly sweet ballads of which fans of A Rocket To The Moon and Never Shout Never will surely lap up. Followed closely by soulful harmonising and memorable, haunting melodies, The Scene Aesthetic make for enjoyable, relaxed listening and are a pair one will quickly fall in love with.

His eponymous label was set up in 1997 and in 2000 Manish participated at the first ever India Fashion Week held in New Delhi. In 2001 the label launched its highly successful ‘Fish Fry’ diffusion line. Man Manish Arora has shown at both London & Paris Fashion Week, continuing at the latter since September 2007. Significantly Arora has been invited to exhibit twice in London’s Victoria & Albert Museum initially for an exhibition called “Global Local” in association with the British Council, India, and secondly his collection was featured in the prestigious “Fashion in Motion” exhibition. lingerie love by vicky barber
With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, the stress of “knickerbuying” has hit an all-time high. Valentine’s Day may be a day for love, lust and special treatment, but being caught in your Marks and Sparks ‘Tuesday’ pants is undoubtedly a mood killer. Therefore, whether you are single and looking for love or taken and looking to impress, we have the solution to all your lingerie dilemmas. << Agent Provocateur is renowned for its shamelessly seductive lingerie. Immodest yet classically sexy and retailing at £95– the ‘Maddy’ bra is an erotic investment to your underwear draw.
For those with darker skin, a white lingerie set is a perfect way to attract attention. Urban Outfitters never fail to impress with their edgier take on sexy. The ‘Yes Master’ Lingerie set –provocative in name and in nature- encompasses thick, mesh straps and a silk underwired cup to provide support and boost cleavage for those with a larger bust. Retailing at £125.00 for the set. >>
For a less expensive alternative, take a look at ASOS’s ‘Boudoir Caren’ bra set retailing at £26.00. >>
<< Finally, those of you feeling particularly daring this Valentine’s Day, experiment with a splash of colour. Take inspiration from Elle Macpherson’s Boudoir lace, boned bra set and disregard any previous inhibitions about conservative underwear. Remember girls… on the 14th February, it’s what’s

What do you get the special woman in your life this Valentine’s day? You can’t go wrong with her favourite flowers and chocolates, jewellery, cuddly toys so if you can go out and get them. Tesco and Asda always provide an array of chocolates and beautiful flowers. If you live together, go get some balloons, scented candles and present the flowers to her as a little surprise to get the evening started. When she is speechless with all the effort you’ve made, you could surprise her with a meal that YOU are going to prepare (not just oven cooked chicken and chips). Google “valentine’s day meal” and there are a lot of sites that can help you make a romantic meal with some ease. Add some champagne and strawberries for dessert to impress and complete the meal. My girlfriend really wants to go to the restaurant in the Meridian Tower (the really tall building in Swansea) called the Grape and Olive so this could be a great, however expensive, alternative to cooking. Follow these steps and I’m sure you will be in her good books.
by sarah bees Valentines Day is a tricky one when it comes to the boys. For us girls it’s all about the romance, and with an array of flowers, heart shaped chocolates and pretty jewellery we’re not that hard to please. But when it comes to boyfriends, we have to think outside the box. Last year was my first with my boyfriend and I came to panic central over what to buy, eventually I came to the conclusion that silky boxers with hearts all over them probably wouldn’t go down well, so instead I bought a collection of his favourite films on DVD, with Transformers ready to watch whenever he pleased I was in his good books. Apart from their favourite films, a good idea for boys on this slightly girly day, is to create a gift box full of their favourite indulgences. Buy a cheap wicker basket and create a check list of his favourite sweets, chocolate, drinks, you could even include some of his favourite toiletries! Cover the basket with some cellophane and a red bow for some Valentine magic and you have managed to create a thoughtful present that is just the right amount of romance for our favourite boys.

By Andy Belcher and Sam Barnett Welcome back to World In Motion! This issue we rejoin Chan’s hilarious escapades in Thailand with his usual lady-boy dodging and drunken wanderings. Then Lìdia continues her Balkans Adventure in Macedonia. If you travelled over the Christmas break and have a story to tell then e-mail it to us on the address above and we will get it in the Waterfront.
Chan’s Journal November 3rd 2008 So we ended up staying in Bangkok for a few more days. The hangover was far too heavy to shift and it turns out that each of these little grotty (but irreplaceable) hostels has a lounging area with headrests and wooden planks that all point toward the twenty year old TV set that show pirate copies of whatever the latest movies are in the cinemas. Following a slap-up breakfast for One Pound, which isn’t entirely the same as the “Beast” from the Uplands Diner, and a few hours of snoozing and sipping of fresh smoothies, I felt right as rain. I saw my first Muay Thai fight. It was a pretty awesome experience of hardcore little Thai nutters (and one French kid) beat the crap out of each other. Heads, shoulders, knees and toes, anything goes in these rings. The traditional music in the background that sounded like a cat drowning kinda ruined it for me after the first six fights. There were nine in total with the eighth one being televised. Stepping out into the heat of the Bangkok night following the fights can only be described as calming, mostly because we were not as “green” as even a few days ago! Now I’m the guy sitting down at the road side stalls watching the naïve and newly-arrived tourists being pestered by the persistent, well versed and overly complimentary Burmese-IndianThai suit salesmen. I didn’t realize just how crafty these guys were until I struck up a conversation with two of them. You see, I’m Burmese and I lived there during nearly the first decade of my life. I don’t look entirely like the majority you find around Thailand. I was more westernized, slightly less lacking in frame and fairer skinned from fewer days in the climate. They were freely conversing in shops, stalls, restaurants in my first language without realizing that I was completely aware of what they’re saying. “Have you got the sale?” “How many suits does he want?” “Check out that girl, is it really a girl?” and my personal favourite “He keeps bartering and I’ll go as low as (insert price here).” It is a great advantage. But what’s more, they seem so very keen to give me a free suit if I manage to get my three Farang companions to buy some Armani-cut suits and Y-fronts. Every time that I got a suit sprung on me the over-flattering salesman claimed that I was “one of them” before offering me this supposedly discounted price. Farangs. Loosely translated, it means “damn foreigners”. To many, that’s all we are. Other people use the term in quite a friendly way to mock and tease the hoards of drunken gap-year and post-uni students who wander these streets for their share of the very well beaten path.
The Muay-Thai ring where the Thai boxers knock seven shades of shit out of each other!
Some travellers choose to experience more shady territory that would terrify the ordinary tourist. Not all of us are willing to pass out in the dangerous “Pat-Pong,” Bangkok’s red-light district where ping-pong balls stuffed up the lady-gardens of many a bar hostess has. It is a blend of all the things that you perhaps don’t REALLY want to witness but can’t help staring at. I told myself that we all owed it to ourselves to see a woman insert a peeled banana and razor blade up her nether-regions before squeezing out the most delicious looking slices of fresh fruit merely seconds later. Yes, I regretted it, but I know that I would’ve regretted it more had I looked away. If you ever make it here it is worth noting that not all that glitters is gold: not every girl who winks at you is interested and those that are interested do occasionally lack a penis. A further warning, don’t drunkenly loiter, eyes half-closed, into bars with names such as “For The Boys – All the Boys” and “Transexy”, a far-cry from our other encounter with “Super Pussy”. Bangkok, you are burned into my memory. And it is time to go. When would we be back? No idea and I don’t care! I will definitely be heading to Chiang Mai tomorrow. If you ever enter Bangkok, the following advice is what you should hold onto as gospel. In times of peril the moment comes when you, as a responsible adult, must decide between taking a gamble to sample the local, ahem, cuisine or retaining your sense of genital cleanliness. Remember these words – what happens in Thailand, stays in Thailand… apart from syphilis and that burning sensation the next time that you pee. By Chan Myea

Waterfront TV What’s on the tube Seeing as this is the first issue since Christmas, Dave Lewis reflects on two of the most watched shows this Christmas - Dr Who and Eastenders For the past few years the Dr Who Special has become a staple of Christmas television, filling the 7pm peak time slot when everyone is tucking into their turkey sandwiches. Despite these special’s not always living up to expectations, this years’ seasonal offering was a real cracker (pun intended). A sci-fi retelling of Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, the episode features the Doctor attempting to change miserable Michael Gambon’s Scrooge-like character Kazran Sardick. In true Dr Who fashion, this does not totally according to plan.

Matt Smith’s Doctor bounces his way round the cobbled streets of the Victorian setting of the episode, and is as entertaining as ever. Whilst Gambon is arguably one of the greatest incarnations of Scrooge yet, he is perfectly cast in the role. The plot is one of the most innovative of the franchise since its reboot and despite the romantic themes of the episode it avoids being slushy. With action, adventure, and Christmas miracles’, the episode was deservedly one of the most viewed programmes of the holidays, but that’s probably because no other shows featured a flying shark.

The Christmas episode of Eastenders is often the most miserable piece of television in existence. Christmas is never easy in Walford, and usually involves divorces, murders, family feuds and worst of all Barbara Windsor. This year did not break the mould. Janine stabbed herself (boo!), Stacie admitted she killed Archie (shock!), and then ran away (yay!). Though luckily enough there was no Babs’ this year. The hour-long episode proved that Janine must surely rank as one of the greatest villains to ever grace the screen. Stabbing herself in order to frame Stacie demonstrates commitment to a cause. She didn’t even get Ryan, the guy she’d been after. Overall it was not a good Christmas for Janine, and a bad Christmas for the characters of Eastenders usually means some good Christmas entertainment for us.

This episode was the most watched piece of television over Christmas, and it’s easy to see why. It makes you feel better about your life. You may have fallen out with your family about spilling gravy, or you may have to give up your bed to a distant relative, but at least you’re not in the Queen Vic with everyone around screaming ‘You Cow!’ at each other.
My Top 5 Picks...
Each issue we put the question to one of the Waterfront faithful. What are your top 5 TV shows of all time? This week, Sports Editor Ben Donovan answers... Take T k M Me O Outt ‘No Likey, No Lighty’...you know the Saturday night drill people. Paddy McGuiness hosts this hilarious dating show with the standard cringe worthy moment’s equivalent to Blind Date in the 1990’s. Each week 30 single girls all compete for a date with one lucky lad, but not before he is put through his paces and stitched up by his friends and family. As with most TV programmes, it has inherited its very own drinking game that takes Saturday night pre-lash to a whole new level. The Only Way Is Essex What’s not to like about obligatory orange tans, fake boobs and all round comedy? The guys and girls from Essex hit our screens before Christmas and even recorded a festive special that was aptly titled The Only Way Is Essexmas. ’My housemates are constantly ribbing me about watching the show, and as I am a genuine fan, I couldn’t help but include it in my top five shows. The show ranges from Mark and Lauren’s infamous ‘nine-year’ relationship which is a running theme throughout, and the legendary Nana Pat who makes copious amounts of shepherd’s pie and keeps the lads in check. The Inbetweeners This is probably mine as well as many other people’s favourite program (apart from Andy Williams!) The trials and tribulations of four socially inept teenagers as they battle to become popular with the girls is comedy gold. Too many good catchphrases have emerged from the three seasons so far and I for one cannot wait for them to release the film during the summer
off 2011 when h the lads enjoy their first lads holiday in Malia. Genius. During the festive period I introduced the show to my mum who, after five minutes, subsequently walked at the room and described the show as ‘utter filth’. Banter. Jersey Shore When I first tuned in to watch this program, I was rather sceptical. However, all this changed after the first episode where a group of 18-30 year olds share a house in Jersey, US, for the summer and subsequently go out most nights and attract a gathering of people wherever they go. The cast includes the main character; Mike ‘The Situation’ who has created a whole new dictionary in the three seasons of the show so far. Such phrases include ‘GTL’ where you have a daily routine of going to the gym, tanning and doing your laundry as well as DTF which is the code word for referring to girls as being ‘Down to F***’. The show follows the group around the clubs of Jersey which mainly involves the lads trying to dodge ‘grenades’. Those of you that tune in will know what I mean. Soccer AM Every football fan in the country knows that during the months of August and May, the perfect way to begin the weekend is a dose of Soccer AM on a Saturday morning. For years it had provided us with endless banter and some great moments, from the Crossbar Challenge and the excellent Soccerettes to the comedy duet of Tubes and Rocket (Not sexist in any way and does not represent the views of Sky Sports, and in particular Andy Gray).

Being Fresher’s ourselves we think ‘Rip Off’ is a brilliant night as it brings Fresher’s back together after the manic Fresher’s fortnight we had at the beginning of the academic year. We were very excited, yet also slightly apprehensive about playing the music for the night as it is a very big responsibility and something we both are so passionate about. By 11pm Diva’s was almost at full capacity and after introducing Scott Mills we had the chance to relax and have a little dance ourselves. Scott Mills was a really great guy and said he too had enjoyed our DJ set which of course meant a lot to us. Mills’ varied DJ set was very good, as expected, and he even got down into the crowd signing autographs and having photographs taken with the fresher’s. &

by Elena Cresci, I had the following thoughts: Firstly, a university student pays for tuition, and thus that is what they receive. What the uni decides to invest their money in is, to be quite frank, none of our business. Providing we are receiving what we are paying for. For instance, the UK government will employ these companies on contracts’ where does the Government receive its money - UK tax payers. Secondly I think it’s a shame that a reputable British business be slandered in such a way, considering it’s on the FTSE 100. There is Z}ˆ › "'

The 7th's took the lead through Michael Pritchard but Photosynthesis replied and ended up with a 2-1 lead after goals by Justin George and a lethal freekick by Damian Paget. The drama continued before the end of the half and the 7th's equalised from a corner, with Pritchard getting his 2nd. "

After a convincing win, the 7th's can be happy with their position knowing they currently have the upper hand on all other league competitors.

Geography 6-3 Team Armadillo Geography recorded an impressive win in a high-scoring game against Team Armadillo, despite missing a number of key players. However, they began the game on the back foot after going two goals down. The Geography keeper failed to deal with a well struck shot by the Armadillo attack and was again under pressure moments later as a defensive error by Geography led to a well-executed penalty to make the score 2-0. Geography bounced back into a game after Will Cook found the back of the net after a goal mouth scramble and Elliot Coard pulled the game back to 2-2. Geography’s defence slipped up again and the game ended up with an exciting 3-2 half time scoreline. With a number of substitutions at half time and during the second half and the difference was
visible as Damien Garvey returned to the back line to reassure the defence as the captain Luke Nash came on to lead the attack. Looking comfortable in possession again, Elliot Coard scored his second of the match with a back post header from a long Tom Waters throw, and then completing his hat trick with a thumping shot from a James Taylor cross, putting — "

to win 1-0, despite the goalmouth excitement in the last minute where Urine Trouble missed a penalty and the following rebound into an open net. Ajax barely left 2nd gear as they tamed the Blazin’ Bonville Bulldogs, winning 8-2. A surprisingly comfortable win was on the cards for SPR as they beat

SPORT COMMENT PAGE Our writers have their say on the big issues Is the romance of the FA Cup a distant memory? Chris Penn discusses whether the worlds greatest cup competition has lost its magic THE FA Cup is viewed by many as the one of the greatest tournaments in the world, with memories ranging from Lawrie Sanchez’s winning header for Wimbledon against Liverpool in `~~ & " ‚
Radford’s rocket that sent Newcastle crashing out to Hereford in 1972. However, in today’s modern game opinion is split over whether the
‘romance of the FA Cup’ still exists, considering the sheer amounts of money that is now associated with Premier League and Champions League. Looking at this season’s cup, it has had its fair share of shocks as well as the usual competitors in the form of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal who all have talented squad depth and are all in rich domestic
form as they challenge for the Premier League title once again. The outsiders for the league title and competitors for the major European places, Tottenham and Manchester City, may fancy themselves for the cup but Spurs were dumped out by Fulham and, with European competition starting later this month, I doubt much sleep will be lost over the defeat. Manchester City have

so far stuttered through the competition and another replay is required for their Fourth Round tie Notts County. The teams that have ‘upset the apple cart’ this year include Blue Square Premier title contenders Crawley Town, whose FA Cup journey began back in October with 1-0 victory over Newport County in the fourth qualifying round. Since then Swindon Town, Derby and Torquay United have all fallen to the West Sussex team which has deservedly earned them a money-spinning tie at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the Fifth Round. Swansea were on the end of a cup shock in the last round against Leyton Orient at the Liberty Stadium where, despite dominating the Londoners for ninety minutes, a late Alan Tate own goal sent the Swans crashing out of the cup. In the press conference afterwards Swans boss Brendan Rodgers admitted that he was disappointed at their exit but perhaps relieved that 100 per cent attention could now be turned to their aim of winning promotion to the Premier % & " Š

yet another cup upset. I guess to understand the true magic of the cup you need to witness it for yourself. As you see on sports punditry programmes from years back, teams like Havant & Waterlooville and Barnsley and the media hype around them but when the TV cameras come knocking on your home town’s stadium door you really do get the FA Cup buzz. My team Stevenage were given a dream tie against Premier League big boys Newcastle that threw up a repeat of the 1998 tie where Stevenage caused an upset by drawing 1-1, earning a replay at St James’ Park where an Alan Shearer header that was shown not to cross the line broke Boro hearts. This year when the eleven Stevenage players walked
eyes despite the likes of Joey Barton, Fabricio Coloccini and Kevin Nolan facing them. The pressure was on the Newcastle team and all Stevenage had to do was play their game on their pitch and they did, pulling off a historic 3-1 victory that united the town and put it on the map. Whether you support a Premier League giant, Football League promotion pusher, or your local team, there is no doubting that the ‘magic of the cup’ still exists. Watch out Fergie and Arsene!
Tis’ the season to be sacking? Sports Editor Ben Donovan examines the shelf-life of the modern day football manager WHO would be a football manager? So far this season no less than 27 managers have lost their jobs, some were deserved, others just harsh. Three bosses even lost their jobs in the same day over a festive period often referred to as the ‘season to be jolly’ as Chris Hutchings, Phil Parkinson and Paul Simpson were dismissed from Walsall, Charlton and Stockport respectively. At the current alarming rate, around half of the clubs in the Premiership and Football League will change their manager this season, which is nothing short of absurd. Don’t get me wrong, some chairmen were left in no position but to change their manager, in particular Walsall and Middlesbrough. The Saddlers poor form had left them eight points adrift at the bottom of League One at the halfway stage of the campaign, despite them
season. Boro on the other hand under the tutelage of Gordon Strachan, failed to live up to their tag of pre-season title favourites as the affable Scot sought to build a team from depths of the SPL, a league which, quite frankly, is terrible.
There are then of course, those managers which really didn’t deserve to get the chop. Martin O’Neill left his position at Aston Villa before a ball had been kicked in the new season, citing a lack of ambition in the transfer market from the Villa Park hierarchy. Fast-forward six months and Darren Bent arrives in the Midlands for a fee of £18million that could rise to a staggering £24million. Let me tell you, I for one would not have wanted to be in the company of the Northern Irishman when he heard that transfer story. This was the manager, don’t forget, that led ‘
"
seasons. Just two games into their League One campaign, Southampton parted company with manager Alan Pardew. As a Saints fan myself, I couldn’t quite believe it. The popular Londoner had taken over a club that had nearly gone bust 12 months earlier, had to deal with a 10-point deduction and a city of unrest. He restored belief and led us to within a whisker of the play-offs last year and got sacked after a convincing 4-0 win at Bristol Rovers. Madness.
Ironically, it wasn’t long before Pardew was back in work as he took over at Newcastle following the shock dismissal of Chris Hughton, who had done a fantastic job in the northeast and steered the Magpies to the Championship title last season after their dismal relegation from the top % ’ '
shock to most people as he had guided them to a decent position in the Premier League, and it made everyone sit up and take note of the fact that the modern day manager had little time to make a impact that would match the ambition of the often big-spending owners whose knowledge of the game is minimal. Another south-coast club and high " Z
Eddie Howe to Burnley in January, just days after the popular boss said he was staying at Dean Court. The departure came as a shock to supporters of the club and the former Cherries defender came under intense criticism from fans for his U-turn as he stepped into the Turf Moor hotseat with the Clarets just a few points "+ % : '
time a highly-rated manager has been
plucked from a lower league side, and it won’t be the last; the same happens with players all the time. But all this boils down to one question. There is a transfer window for players, so why not have one for managers? It will probably never happen, but it seems like the only stable solution for what is a growing concern in the game, not just for the managers but for the fans.
Spare a thought for the players. As a succession of half rate managers step into the breach only to be gone within a couple of months, the promising players in the clubs youth team now become disheartened and wonder if it’s all worth it, as they roll up to the casino at 3am with a girl on each arm before ordering copious amounts of Jägermeister.
