FRUSTRATED STUDENTS TAKE STAND OVER ACCESS By Kate Wilson News Reporter “IF you’re disabled and a member of Swansea University Student Union, you can’t join Swansea SU Societies.� This controversial Facebook status stirred up a number of reactions when it was posted on Sunday 20th February. The words came from Patrick Collins, president of Swansea University Comedy Club, who wrote it in reaction to an incident involving his girlfriend Katie Burke who is the president of the Drama Society. Katie, a second year law student, was born with both of her hips dislocated; a medical condition that only really surfaced as a problem when she fell during a skiing holiday in December 2005. Since then Katie has had two operations on her hip, involving a combined time of 6 months of physiotherapy. Katie’s hip is still causing her problems, in addition to causing her a great amount of pain. “Currently I take 12 pills for pain everyday�, she told The Waterfront. On certain days, depending on the pain, she has to use either crutches or a walking stick. The Drama Society book Dining Room C for rehearsals every Monday, Thursday

and Sunday year round. However, the only disabled access to that dining room is available through the lift which is situated on the other side of Fulton House, and only accessible by walking through dining rooms A and B in order to get to C. On Sundays this has proven to be a problem as dining rooms A and B are kept locked for security purposes, preventing Katie from taking the lift stairs. This puts unnecessary pressure on her hip joint which causes her further pain. On the 20th February Katie tried to get to her rehearsal by taking the lift, however realising that Dining Room A was locked, she was unable to get to Dining Room C. Katie told The Waterfront: “I went to the Union House porters and asked them to unlock Dining Room A, their response was: “sorry love not my job�. I was sent to the bottom of Fulton House to ask the security staff if they would open the dining room for me, their response was also “sorry love not my job�. I was then whose job it was to open the dining rooms for disabled access, however they were not around. At this point I just chose to walk up to Dining Room C.� “It just felt really humiliating. I

LIBYAN STUDENTS FACE DIFFICULTIES By Elena Cresci News Reporter THE EFFECTS of the ongoing crisis in Libya have hit a number of students in Swansea. Some Libyan students last week faced the prospect of being left without funding. Students around the country are being affected by the uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, as communicating with families in the areas affected is near to impossible. While the students have since been awarded this month’s scholarship in time, the uncertainty raised serious

dependant on the monthly scholarship to support their families here in Swansea. As the crisis continues, the students needed funds. When asked what course of action they would take in the event their funds were disrupted, the students explained; “We can cope for a few days, a few weeks, but no more. We have no idea what we’ll do after that.� With regards to the crisis itself, the students expressed disbelief and shock at the events transpiring in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya at present, as one commented: “I feel like I’m in a dream – nobody expected this to happen so quickly,� Geraint Davies, Labour MP for Swansea West, spoke to the students

STUDENT SET TO STAND IN COUNCIL ELECTIONS

By Elena Cresci News Reporter A SECOND year politics student has been selected as a Labour candidate for the May 2012 Swansea Council elections. Mitchell Theaker, Campaigns and # + Labour Students will be representing Labour in the race for Cockett Ward in 2012. At 20 years old, Theaker is currently the youngest candidate in the running for a seat in Swansea Council. The Labour student not only had to submit a CV and go through interview stages, but also needed to prove to the residents of his chosen ward that he would be a suitable candidate, with the selection process culminating in a speech to those constituents. RESEARCHER GETS 1.2 MILLION By Willaim Hunt News Reporter A RESEARCHER at Swansea University has been awarded a â‚Ź1.47 million (approximately ÂŁ1.2 million) grant by the European Research Council (ERC) to investigate the causes of past climatic change. Dr. Siwan Davies, a senior geography lecturer at the university’s School of the Environment and Society, will put together a team of post-doctoral researchers, PhD students and research technicians to take part in the pioneering research. The study will involve comparing microscopic volcanic ash deposits in ancient ice and marine sediments, in order to better understand the causes of past climate change that have seen temperature swings of up to 16 degrees Celsius occur in the space of mere decades. Starting in September, the team led by Davies will embark on a 5-year project entitled ‘Tephra constraints on Rapid Climate Events’ (TRACE), funded by a prestigious ERC funding grant. “Little has challenged our understanding of climate change more

than the abruptness with which largescale jumps in temperature occurred in the past,â€? said Davies, adding that currently, such changes are “poorly understoodâ€?. “These climatic events could be related to ocean circulation behaviour,â€? she suggested, “or be triggered by changes in the atmosphere possibly in the tropics.â€? By analyzing trace ash deposits found in Greenland ice-cores, which provide a record of atmospheric change, with North Atlantic marine records, that depict changes in the ocean circulation system, Dr. Davies aims to answer the question of whether the ocean is the cause of past atmospheric temperature X them. The European Research Council was set up by the European Union in 1997, by encouraging competition for funding between the most promising researchers in Europe. UNI CLIMBS TO CLAIM BEST SOCIAL LIFE IN WALES By Desirae Gostlin News Reporter SWANSEA UNIVERSITY has climbed six places in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey. Previously placed 29th out of the 113 institutes, Swansea climbed to 23rd with a score 79.13. Although the University has risen in the rankings over the past year, Swansea

was once top of the survey when they beat 170 other UK institutes in 2005 for the coveted Best Student Experience Award. Some of the leading UK universities such as Oxford and Cambridge have slipped in ranking with Cardiff University dropping four places. The survey asked more than 13,000 undergraduate university students to rate their universities on 21 different categories ranging from social life to the

quality of teaching. Not surprisingly, of the 21 categories of judgment, Swansea scored highly in the social life category with a score of 6.3, the second highest score, surpassed only with a score of 6.4 by Loughborough University and the { ! two highest ranked schools overall, and the University of Leeds. Angelo Volante, 1st year physics student, commented how he is enjoying

his time at Swansea University and that he is “really happy with because it provides a balanced all round experience for students.� Volante also commented: “The campus is user-friendly and close enough to the city centre to provide a good night life. I like how participation in sports is encouraged and all this is set against a beautiful natural environment. There’s something for everyone.�

A ďŹ ne success for the EURO CYCLE TRIP Library Book Amnesty By Angharad Jones Deputy News Editor {] &7\&)7 ! for students at last week’s Library Fines Amnesty organised by Swansea’s ? $ The amnesty took place over a three day period last week, during which students were able to return overdue books to the university library without incurring a fee. A total saving of ÂŁ1179 was made by students as the library saw the return of an astounding 526 books which were overdue or declared lost. Due to the amount of items returned which had previously been recorded as lost, the library made a remarkable ÂŁ4270.09 saving on books which would have otherwise needed to be replaced. Though many students took advantage of the amnesty, one student in particular is very grateful for the event following a fee of ÂŁ471 being wiped from her library account after returning ten overdue books to the library. Third year Politics and American Studies student Fern Jeremy told The Waterfront: “The library amnesty was incredible. I genuinely don’t know what I would have done without it – there’s

no way I could have paid that amount of money. “It was terrifying logging onto my + ` that I owed ÂŁ471. I needed the books for my dissertation but couldn’t renew them $ ) 8 + $‚ 8 ? The Waterfront: “The amnesty has saved the Library over four thousand pounds at a time when their budget is tight which means more money can be spent on resources for all students. “So whether or not you actually saved money by taking an overdue book back yourself, everyone is getting a better deal now because we’ve implemented an idea with the library that has saved ÂŁ4,270. “There are 526 more items back in the library to use than if there hadn’t been an amnesty. That’s good news for students who sometimes struggle to get

The cycle, nicknamed ‘Le Tour’ by the group, will kick off in early June covering 2,000 miles in support of a charity close to the boy’s hearts. The trip will take them through England, France

Unpretty in Pink

By Daniel Harvey News Reporter THE ICONIC pink house in Brynmill, Swansea, has been told to cover the advertising upon its walls. The City Council has recently refused the planning application for the logo of the Cardiff based Events Company to appear on the external walls although it may retain its colour. This comes after the Council received complaints about the inappropriate advertising on the outside of the building; many residents disputed that the colour was not in fact a problem. The Waterfront previously revealed that the house had caused

complaints, with it being labelled “gaudy and crass.� Safety was also deemed an issue as it was argued that the advertising on the Pink House, as it is now affectionately called, could cause distractions to drivers. Similarly there was a potential risk that it could damage business for other landlords and property owners in the area. The renovations were paid for by the money received for the advertising rights, and although local residents are happy to see the renovation of the house the main issue lies with the advertisements that actually adorn the house. However, this has not been a problem restricted to this house alone. Last year there were advertisements running through Singleton Park advertising Nokia phones which also breached the law as they had no planning permission. As Nokia had not paid for the right to advertise in Singleton Park it had no legal rights to be advertising at all and as a result the advertisements were removed. Illegal advertising has become a growing problem for the Council and although they would like to see similar renovations of housing continue do not wish to be seen as biased towards certain companies.

WORLD NEWS ROUND-UP Texas Terror Charge By Kate Wilson World News Reporter Last week, US authorities in Texas arrested a Saudi student who had sought to make a bomb. Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, 20, was arrested last Wednesday, January 23 and charged with the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, based on the alleged purchase of chemicals and explosive-making equipment and his research of potential US targets. According to the Justice Department, Mr Aldawsari planned to use a mobile telephone as a remote detonator and purchased other items to assist with bomb-making, including a gas mask, a hazardous materials suit, a soldering iron, glass beakers and a stun gun. A diary was found by investigators and has been used as evidence against Mr Aldawsari in court. An excerpt from the diary reads: “It is time for Jihad.� Mr Aldawsari drew up a list of US targets to attack, including former president George Bush’s Dallas residence and 12 reservoir dams in Colorado and California, investigators said. A spokeswoman from South Plains College, near Lubbock, Texas, said that Aldawsari was a transfer student who had been at the college for only six weeks.

By Alun Rhys Chivers World News Editor Violent scenes in India threatened to overshadow the showcase match of the Cricket World Cup so far, as police struggled to control fans demonstrating in Bangalore over an apparent lack of tickets for the match between England and India on February 27. Police were caught on camera hitting fans, as more than 20,000 people queued for the 8,000 general sale tickets, which were sold within 2 and a half hours. The bulk of the tickets were apparently allocated to sponsors and commercial partners. Ticketing websites for the match – which was switched from Mumbai to Bangalore - apparently crashed due to high $ ^ ago also failed to arrive. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has since announced a change in ticket policy, with a public ballot in place for the $ & )`` ` Executive Haroon Lorgat has said that he does not envisage further problems. The match ended in a last ball tie, with Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar hitting 120 in India’s 338, after England captain Andrew Strauss had scored 158.

Quake Leaves NZ Second City In Ruin By Laura Stowe World News Reporter

New Zealand suffered a major natural disaster on February 21 when an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck its second largest city, Christchurch. Reports earlier this week suggested that four Britons were among the 148 who are known to have died. The only UK national named so far is Gregory Tobin, a chef from North Yorkshire. Two other Britons feared dead are thought to have been aboard a bus that was crushed by falling masonry. Phil Coppeard of Suffolk, is reported missing. He is one of many other individuals who are still unaccounted for. Christchurch was rocked by a much larger quake in September 2010 but this one caused far greater damage owing to the fact that it was much closer to the city and it was also extremely shallow. It’s election season! But who cares?

T

here is no doubt that 2011’s Sabbatical elections will be the biggest Swansea University has seen yet. With no incumbent challengers for any of the roles, the union will have six fresh faces at the helm in 2011/12, making this an election to watch. We could see the ? @ ? @ 9<<[ of candidates shows just how alive the interest in student politics and activism are here in Swansea. ? – !

Student and national politics are overlapping in a way they haven’t for years. On Monday the 28th of February, NUS President Aaron Porter’s face graced the cover of the Guardian’s G2 supplement, showing the

face of cuts and higher fees. Without a shadow of a doubt, now is an interesting time to be a student poltician and I’m sure that each candidate is hoping to play a part in the movement that has gripped students’ unions across the UK. These budding student politicians will face very different challenges to those of their predecessors. The way in which unions have previously lobbied politicians may not work as well as it has in in the past after the massive embarassment Nick Clegg + Q their pledge to oppose higher tuition fees. With such a huge backlash against the party that will likely affect them negatively come the next elections, politicans may be more cautious in their dealings with students’ unions. How will the new union recruits move forward from the heavy hits students have taken this past year? The tuition fees debate is one students lost very publicly last year, although the Welsh Assembly stepped in to take part of the hit for Welsh domiciled students. Swansea’s new union will need to buffer what Parliament wants to do in future, but at the same time work to ensure the Assembly keeps their current commitment to students. Something I’ll be interested to see is how the new Sabbs will take the use of online networking further. You only need to look at the regular updates of Twitter, Facebook and blogs to see how online networking is becoming crucial to the way the Sabbaticals communicate with the student body. Simply listing the names and email addresses of the

8 + Â&#x; Facebook makes it easy to get to know your Sabbs and make them more personable, approachable and, most importantly, accessible. Whichever way you look at it, these elections ! 8 ! idea about student politics. I for one can’t wait for campaign week.

We wrote the articles, put them on a `Q ) $ After two issues, I calculated that I’d wasted 27 hours going back and forth between campus and the Post, so I started barracking the Union for funding to cover some brand new computers and design software. I saw The Waterfront as so much more than X Â&#x; + $ 7 $ )8 an Ikea sofa from Welfare and the Union had come through with six new PCs. I may be wrong, but I

$ Waterfront Online followed suit shortly afterwards. I loved the job, you couldn’t $ ?!

I learned quickly that you couldn’t force the $ ) 8 Â&#x; it was just that some weeks the content was “ + $ # ! pedalos being nicked from the Pub on the Pond and ending up outside Halls. Students denied all knowledge, naturally. I look back at my time in Swansea fondly, although I committed far less time to my course than one was supposed to. I didn’t know it when I was there, but my two years as Waterfront ? ! + { $ & skills I learnt landed me a job in town as a print + + + 9<<[ )8 ) wasn’t supposed to be an employee, anywhere. Any remaining staff from the Union will second that – after my stubborn demands for new equipment and a general desire for change I think the General Manager and Treasurer dreaded me knocking on the door! & ) ! writing books and speaking about adventures, big and small. I suppose my livelihood is focussed on undertaking large expeditions around the world but

now and then I do other silly things like trying to date 100 women in 100 days. & $ # adventure was born in Swansea. I took up longboarding and spent many hours training on the cycle path around the bay, before skating from John O’Groats ? ¥<< 7 $ 7 “ the Union Travel shop here, because she got us discounted air tickets that made the whole project just that little bit more feasible – I’ll never forget her for that. I write from Nepal, where I’m learning how to Z<<< ^ along the Himalayas. Although life is very different for me now some things haven’t changed from my

Editor’s Choice: The Vanishing Horizon Hannah Price

The book by Jo Swerling was turned into a stage production in 1950 and since then its popularity has never faltered. With music and lyrics by world famous composer Frank Loesser, the story is based on Damon Runyon’s two short stories, ‘The Idyll of Miss Brown’ and •]

! gamblers. However, as all good musicals are, it is also based around romance! Without giving too much away, this feel good musical is bound to have you dancing and grinning as you leave! Its original production premiered on 46th Street, New York on November 24th,

1950. After 1,200 performances, and ! ] # its West End performance, at the London Coliseum. After this, the musical went through many city revivals, including New York, Las Vegas and back to London. Each time the cast got bigger and better. From 1985 to 1986, the musical starred Lulu at the Prince of Wales Theatre and was a huge success. The most recent revival, in 2009, was described as ‘timeless’, proving that this incredible show will never go out of style! Including famous songs, such as ‘Luck be a Lady’ and ‘Sit down, you’re rocking the boat!’, this show up out of your seat and dancing along. & Z‰[[ Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons, further adding to its success. This play has really established itself within the musical world, so make sure you don’t miss out! Guys and Dolls is in the Swansea Grand Theatre on the 15th March until the 19th March and tickets are currently on sale.

As well as a dramatist Dario Fo is a satirist, theatre director, actor and for Mayor of Milan in 2006, a position he narrowly missed out on. This is perhaps characteristic of Fo’s compassion and understanding of the impact of politics upon ordinary people. His dramas are sympathetic towards the underdogs of society while rallying against organised crime, political corruption, political murders, the Catholic Church’s policy on abortion and the wars in the Middle East. This has not always made him popular with the authorities in his own country as well as abroad. He was even + # + into police protection. This illustrates Fo’s uncompromising search for the truth in his drama, without concern for his own well being. The play revolves around Maria, a woman in her thirties who has been locked inside her home by her husband to prevent her from seeing a young student who she has been having an affair with. While her husband is at work she does the housework, looks after the baby and keeps an eye upon her invalid + ^ door neighbour. Her lover tries to break into the house but catches his hand in the door while Maria’s brother-in-law tries ^ $ considers shooting herself but decides to point the gun at the door, ready for when her husband returns from work. This comedic and thought provoking drama is a must see production. It is a script in hand performance with a talk about Fo’s life and work. It takes place on Saturday 12th March, tickets are available at reception at £5 each.

This time they are performing A Woman Alone by the Nobel Prizewinning dramatist Dario Fo to celebrate a 100 years of International Women’s Day.

Thai Fried Bananas with Ice Cream 2-3 bananas peeled and each cut into 3-4 pieces 1 oz butter 2 oz soft brown sugar Zest and juice of one lime Sprinkle of desiccated coconut As this is a very quick dessert, get all of the ingredients set out in front of you before you start. Heat the butter in a non-stick frying pan until it starts sizzling. Add the bananas and stir them around the pan keeping the butter good and hot. Once they begin to colour, sprinkle in the brown sugar. Cook these together until the butter and the sugar begin to caramelise. At this point add a sprinkle of coconut followed by the fresh lime juice. Divide onto serving plates topped with ice cream and a little lime zest and enjoy.

First thing to do would be to wash and prepare all of the vegetables by cutting them into batons or strips ap ^ 9 and inch wide. Now heat a little of the oil in a wok or a sautĂŠ pan with sloping sides. Once it is good and hot add all of the vegetables together at once. Keep the vegetables moving around the pan whilst also keeping the pan good and hot. Once the vegetables begin to colour and soften a little, add the sliced duck and the hoi sin and the plum sauce. Stir together and moisten with a dash of white wine or water. Divide the stir-fry between four plates, served with hot egg noodles.

Literature: The Girl in Times Square Literature: A Scanner Darkly Elin Davies The Girl in Times Square, by Paullina Simons is a novel with many different plots that manage to intertwine and make sense at its end. The protagonist Lily Quin is a 24 four-year-old university student who, like most of us, is broke and struggling to find the motivation to finish her degree. What Lily doesn’t realise is several life changing experiences are about to be thrown at her making her question every aspect of her life. At the beginning of the novel Lily comes into a great deal of money, however her fortunes are marred by a serious illness and the mysterious disappearance of her flatmate, Amy. When Detective Spencer Patrick O’Malley begins to investigate the case Lily is forced to gradually come to terms with the reality of the situation. Throughout the course of the novel a relationship develops between the pair which gives Lily the strength to fight the horrific illness she is battling. The gruelling sickness Lily suffers from gave me a real insight into how this disease really affects people. In reading, I was privy to the gritty descriptions of what Lily undergoes each day, often

reducing me to tears. While Lily is struggling for survival, Amy is still missing and the investigation into her whereabouts is still going on all around her. Meanwhile, suspicions arise against Lily’s brother who is running to become senator. The question is, will O’Malley risk his relationship with Lily by continuing to delve into her brother’s affairs or will he let go the possibility of solving the mystery for a happy ending? The novel is not a short one but once you get stuck in you simply cannot put it down. The language is straightforward making it an undemanding read and all the more easy to devour. There’s so much going on in Lily’s life and The Girl in Times Square takes the phrase ‘money isn’t everything’ to a whole other level. I was kept gripped during the whole story wondering whether or not Lily would survive, what would happen between her and Spencer, where was the mysterious Amy, and what was her story? One thing about the novel is the emotions is depicts and how far drawn into them you become as a reader. More than once in reading I found myself crying or laughing out loud.

FIXERS DARE TO DREAM

MUSIC EDITOR CHARLIE TEASDALE CAUGHT UP WITH JACK GOLDSTEIN, LEAD SINGER OF FIXERS, TO TALK ABOUT TOURING, INFLUENCES AND NEW SINGLE ‘IRON DEER DREAM’. ‘Iron Deer Dream’ has just been released on iTunes and seven inch vinyl. Is it good to have the single out and how’s it being received? Yeah, really well received. It’s only " % but it’s going well. It just feels nice to see it in a format you don’t normally get [7 inch vinyl]. It’s not easy for an unsigned band to get recorded onto vinyl because it’s so expensive to produce. It’s great to have a label that’s willing to push it [vinyl] and make it happen for you. I never thought I’d see our work on that format, there’s more excitement, I mean anyone can get digital music straight to them and download it, whereas vinyl, I still don’t really understand how it works! How did the band come to be formed? We got asked to do this show last Christmas, but we weren’t really a band at that point, so we kind of got together and learnt some songs from scratch. 6

like a straight up Phil Spector sound, and we were trying to replicate it with samplers and lots of percussion. But it kind of evolved into something a lot fresher, and that’s what we’ve got now. Our song writing is similar to and kind of rooted in Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks, but the big thing for us is any really well crafted pop song; stuff like Mariah Carey. Our mixtape is % $ # < % to be honest. In terms of sound, I think the fun bit of calling yourself an experimental band is that the audience see you as an experimental band, and so the excitement comes from the sound. A lot of bands claim to be \ > # ^

just seem seeped in irony and cynicism, as if they’re trying to get a one up on their audience; it’s like they say “oh we listen to minimalism and stuff and this is going to sound like Cool Mo Dee and Run DMC and none of you 16 year olds are going to understand this...� So there’s no joy in it, it’s full of cynicism and I don’t think it’s genuine. The fact is, it doesn’t matter if the audience don’t understand it, or even if the artist doesn’t understand it, the most important thing is the enjoyment of it.

What’s an average day right now for Fixers? It’s kind of weird because every week it’s different; we’ve just come off a kind of small club tour with sporadic dates, so then, the average day would have been spent recovering from the last show.Whereas now we’re staying in this really nice apartment that’s right next to the studio [where they’re recording an EP] and at the moment we’re just staying there. And then in about four days time it changes again and I’m going to be waking up in my own bed, and seeing my girlfriend (hopefully!). Is

I really enjoy being busy, I like to be rushed off my feet. I’ve been in a position where I’ve had nothing to do [like you, the student] and it really drags me down! There’s a big movement at the moment of 1960s-esque ‘surf rock’. Are you happy to be grouped in with this, and what do you think of the movement in general? I think it’s great for bands to be seen supporting each other, but when a ‘scene’ evolves from that, stuff can become misconstrued. It’s nice that it’s not just a resurgence, though; like when Vivian Girls started doing their thing and making waves, no pun intended, it was incredible stuff and it wasn’t steeped in nostalgia, it still sounded new and fresh. How was it to do a session at Maida Vale? Yeah, it was amazing. We actually did two sessions there. We did one for Huw Stephens which was really good and then we did one for Jo Whiley’s Live ` $ q \ % with live radio, and it was pretty scary! We covered Rihanna’s ‘What’s My Name’ and we wanted to put it up on our MySpace but didn’t know if we could because obviously we didn’t write the song and the BBC owns the rights. How much has playing the BBC introducing stage at T in the Park helped you? It works as a kind of stepping stone. We’d done a session at BBC Oxford already and that lead on to more people hearing about us, and that lead to more gigs, and then the BBC invited us to play T In The Park, and it was $ { %

in a big pond though and no one had ever heard us, but we had a brilliant opportunity and although we were kind of ‘obsolete’, we really enjoyed it. Have you started recording the album yet and when is it out? Hopefully we’re doing the album in the summer which will be out on Vertigo. We haven’t even discussed where we’re going to do it or how we’re going to do it [the recording], but that’s cool because we like to keep things as open and fresh as possible. There’s a few tracks we’re not recording on the EP in order to save them for the album. I always think $

After three other top 40 hits –, ‘California Girls’, ‘Teenage Dream’ and ‘Firework’ – Katy Perry has released a new single, ‘E.T.’, from her album Teenage Dream. Featuring American rapper Kanye West, it contains elements of pop, hip-hop and electronic ballads, all alongside electronic beats, and begins with Kanye West’s rapping followed by the verses and choruses from Perry. It is quite a catchy single but a song that is a different, darker side to the teenage pop music from Katy. She tends to add her own style to her music but this one seems to lack that element; the chorus is about a lover that infects her with poison and about an extra-terrestrial. Critics have said it has similarities to t.A.T.u.’s single ‘All The Things She Said’... What do you think? Still, 4th single and there $ ~

In Your Eyes is the latest single from the 2010 album Losing Sleep by Edwyn Collins’ of Orange Juice fame. The album marks a return for Collins to music after several years of illness, and this single doesn’t disappoint. The well-established singer/songwriter collaborates with relative newcomers, US indie band The Drums, in a song about love and a longing to escape. Collins and Drums vocalist Jonathan Pierce share vocals, coming together for a spot of harmonising in the chorus, on this mid-tempo indie rock offering, and their vocals are perfectly suited to each other. The Drums’s presence adds an edgier, guitar-heavy sound to the track, and the collaboration is an inspired choice on Edwyn Collins’ part. It’s pretty easy listening (I’ve had it on repeat a fair few times) and will get stuck in your head; and can you spot the rarely acceptable uses of hand clap percussion?

The son of Paul Simon (of Simon and Garfunkel), Harper Simon produces a wonderfully melancholy track which I instantly adored. The melody is cheerful and light with the contrast of lyrics which border on doleful, somewhat reminiscent of The Smiths at their best (although admittedly less suited for an

Morrissey, slightly redolent of Lacrosse’s ‘You Can’t Say No Forever’ and most importantly, with the spirit of Simon and Garfunkel running throughout, this track is simply wonderful. For those who feel nostalgic listening to Simon and Garfunkel favourites like ‘Mrs Robinson’, ‘Wishes and Stars’ provides a fresh take on the sounds of Simon, a perfect mellow tune suited for an adorable 500 Days of Summer^  8 who is by no means a new kid on the block, certainly has a blossoming career ahead of him and one which would I hope will produce more material like this remarkably addictive piece of music.

In a mind-blowing collaboration, The Cure frontman and eighties icon Robert Smith joins electronic enigma Crystal Castles to produce a phantasmagorical track complete with beautiful Cure-era lyrics and a heavy electronic sound.With more of a structure than the average Crystal Castles tune, this exciting new track provides the best of The Cure accompanied by the relatively new talent on the alternative music scene works to create an explosive tune to delight fans of both The Cure and Crystal Castles. The track has the same hypnotic appeal as the Joy Division classic ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’: addictive, heart-breaking and wonderfully energetic. Almost two decades ago in 1995, the first edition of the Waterfront did not have a fashion section. Indeed, when we reminisce back to 1995 it does not resonate as a particularly stylish period in time. The early ‘Noughties’ for me, drags up memories of Spice-Girls-inspired crop tops and baggy combat trousers that wouldn’t see the light of day nowadays! Despite the fashion industry’s drastic movement away from the awful ‘Noughties’ trends, the fashion industry isn’t so dissimilar now to what it was then. In fact, I think that the year 1995, specifically, marked the establishment of a fresh, new and expanding fashion industry and the emergence of a ‘mash-up’ decade that embraces a wide range of trends and styles.

The British fashion designer John Galliano could face prison after an Anti-Semitic rant in a Parisian café. It emerged after a video was leaked from a British newspaper that secretly filmed the designer. For the man who was awarded British Designer of the Year on numerous occasions, as well as obtaining a CBE for his services to the fashion industry, his fall from grace is sudden and swift. Beginning on the 25th February, he was arrested for an alleged assault and racist remarks upon a French couple. The days that followed were consumed with uncertainty on Galliano’s fate. But when the video was released on the 28th February, John Galliano was removed from Dior, the company where he was head designer. Interestingly, on this date Giorgio Armani was interviewed by Telegraph’s Hilary Alexander at his Autumn/Winter 2011 show and was asked to comment on Galliano’s actions. Armani’s response was regretful, stating that he was ‘sorry to hear what had happened to Galliano’, acknowledging that ‘it must be a difficult time for him’. This was quickly followed by a report from NY Magazine asserting that Italian Vogue’s Franca Sozzani had defended the designer for his videotaped outburst, implying that he was clearly provoked. Days on, Galliano appears to be using this defence after releasing a statement that ‘he was verbally harassed’ and ‘completely denies the claims’. However, with clear audio and visual footage of the designer using racist remarks, including ‘I love Hitler’ and ‘people like you would be dead today’ it is unlikely that such a plea will stand strong.

Yes, the ‘Noughties’ does reclaim a nostalgic feeling toward certain fashion fads like cropped tops, faded denim and boho-chic, but these were trends that already existed prior to this decade! Until the ‘Noughties’, each decade dominated its own distinct style, such as the fifties flirty ‘Hollywood’ glamour and cinched silhouettes or the seventies vibrant, billowing ‘Hippie’ spirit. The nineties merely portrayed a polishing up of previously renowned styles mainly from the eighties. This ‘mash-up’ of styles represents the way fashion culture works today; we are inspired extensively from a wide range of influences such as music, celebrities, past decades and so on.

The industry in 1995 was therefore just beginning to bloom into what it is today! With Victoria’s Secret hosting their first ever runway show in 1995 and Kate Moss making her debut at Stella McCartney’s graduate show, the fashion industry caused a media storm. In popular culture, television sitcoms like ‘Clueless’ emerged, portraying a ‘preppy’ style that modern shows like ‘Gossip Girl’ indulge in. Regardless of the similarities, we can still see a major contrast between the idealistic culture of 1995 and the way the fashion industry is heading today. A 1995 survey found that three minutes of looking at models in a fashion magazine caused 70% of women to feel depressed, guilty and ashamed. Luckily, today we see the fashion market heading toward a more realistic standpoint. With such a diverse range of fashion, the industry is trying to cater for everyone. Shows like ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and popular magazines like ‘Look’ are attempting to use models of all sizes; petite, tall and curvy. We are now amongst the development of a newer and even better fashion industry and have much to look forward to!

Aside from the law, these revelations have vibrated through the fashion industry. His removal from Dior will certainly have a significant effect upon the label and it is unknown whether his own brand, John Galliano, will continue. After such severe events will he ever manage to repair his credibility? It looks unlikely, as Natalie Portman, the face of Dior, commented that ‘in light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way’. She will surely be one of many.

After graduating from a Fashion Design course at Central St. Martins College in London in 1994, Matthew Williamson began his career as a freelance designer before making his mark on the high street by designing for Monsoon. The highly detailed embroidered and beaded fabrics that have become a trademark of the Matthew Williamson fashion house originated when Williamson worked in India for the high street store. You will still find that the clothing and accessories you encounter in Monsoon and Accessorize embrace the Eastern and Oriental culture that Williamson has beautifully translated into fashion. Following his work with Monsoon, Williamson was ready to launch his own fashion label, and did so in a catwalk show in 1997’s London Fashion Week. “Obviously before the game there was a feeling of anxiety and nervousness because of the situation we were in – we needed to win to stay up. “For me personally, I was on loan from West Ham and I gave everything I had in the six months that I was at the club before I signed permanently. But there were players there that were playing for their livelihoods and who were going to be out of a contract, so I’m glad we did it for those lads really who had mortgages to pay and families to support.� Fast forward eight years and the outlook is far brighter. Britton has played a key role in the club’s meteoric rise from the bottom tier to within touching distance of the Premier League. Following their record-breaking promotion to the Championship in 2008, Swansea have consolidated their position in the second tier, and narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs at the end of 2009/2010 under Paulo Sousa. In the ensuing summer, Britton left the club on a free X { $ But his departure left a bitter taste following a public falling-out with Sousa midway through the season after the Portuguese player made comments about Britton’s contract negotiations. Since then, however, Leon has gone on record to admit that he made a mistake in leaving Swansea. “If I could turn the clock back to last summer then I wouldn’t have left. But for various reasons I thought my future lay away from the club, but it was clear to me pretty early on that I had made a mistake and I shouldn’t have left the club. “But I was delighted that Swansea were able to do a deal and bring me back.� Following Swansea’s failure to land a place in the play-offs, Sousa himself left to join Leicester City in the summer and was replaced by Brendan Rodgers, who has transformed the club from play-off contenders to genuine title candidates. But the style of play that was so emblematic under both Martinez and Sousa has been continued by Rodgers and Britton believes the team has come on a long way this season. “It has been different, but the philosophy is still the same – they want to pass the ball and keep possession. But last year we were a bit defensive and we looked to counter attack teams; but this year the

FEATURE INTERVIEW 23 manager likes us to press higher up the pitch.� One of Britton’s former team mates and fans’ favourite, Lee Trundle, described his return to the club in 2009 as like ‘coming home’, and Leon was no different in that respect. “It was like coming back home. “I’m a London boy and I spent 20 years growing up there but I now consider Swansea to be my home. “I’m so comfortable here and I’ve probably got more friends here than I have back in London.� With Britton returning to the club, and Lee Trundle having a season back in South Wales last season, I asked Leon what was so infectious about Swansea as a place that draws former players to return. “It’s such a nice city; you’re by the sea and the people are so friendly and they make you feel at home. You walk down the street and you’ll see people you know and you can have a good conversation that you don’t get in bigger, more diverse cities. “It’s got lovely beaches, lovely scenery, and the football team isn’t bad either!�

Leon believes he has what it takes to be a successful manager. “I think he can be a successful Wales manager because the players will instantly respect him because of what he has achieved as a player and at international level in particular.� Finally, I asked Leon whether he would like to end his playing days at the Liberty Stadium and if he had any plans to remain in the game once he hangs up his boots. %) ! + 8 $ But if the club are happy with me then I would love to stay. %) + ! !

LGBT Awareness Week - 7th - 11th March LGBT Awareness Week is an annual event with the long-term goal of raising awareness and interest in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues. The week begins with a campaign on LGBT in the media, so you should be seeing some of our enthusiastic volunteers wandering around in sandwich boards about campus, hoping to broaden understanding. Next, we have dedicated Tuesday to raising money for charity. The London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard is a dedicated helpline, offering advice and support to LGBT people all over the country, so come and have a gander at the stall - maybe even win a prize! Tuesday night will be a riot of an evening, with question and number bingo, raising money for a worthy cause. Thursday highlights issues in the International LGBT community, with a side of Bake Sale to go with it. Finally, Friday will see collaboration with the Christian Union to address the + ^ ! $ We hope you enjoy our Awareness Week and thank you to everyone who has helped put this together. Shoreline Vagina Monologues Shoreline Theatre are once again proud to present to you The Vagina Monologues. Based on the interviews recorded by author Eve Ensler from women all over the world, this incredibly funny but emotionally moving set of monologues gives a voice to a variety of feminine characters and their varying sexual experiences, some good, some bad. Now an annual event for Shoreline, every penny raised is donated to Swansea Women’s Aid who work tirelessly to protect and support women when they need help the most. Come along and help Shoreline support a very worthy cause on Thursday March 10th at Sin City. Doors open at 6.30pm ready for a 7pm start. Welcome to another exciting edition of World in Motion, recently quoted as being “by far the best Travel Section of any newspaper in the world!”*. To mark the 200th edition of The Waterfront, we’re introducing a new competition! It’s called spot the stupid word, in this article we’ve included a stupid word which has no relevance to the article. If you spot it, email us and you could be the lucky winner of a packet of crisps (value up to £0.30). In this edition we bring you the most comprehensive guide ever written on the City of Budapest and Chan continues his adventures in Thailand. We’ve even included a few travel tips about gaffa tape thanks to travel guru Andy Belcher. Also, we apologise in advance for this edition, it’s just about getting smashed, we really are a serious travel section, next edition its culture in Benidorm and Malia.

Everything you will Ever Need to Know About Going to Budapest! The city of Budapest prides itself in being one of the world’s most popular short break destinations. It’s exquisite architecture, vibrant night life and breath taking views, makes Paris (a more traditional city break destination) look like an swirling vortex filled with vomit inducing cuisine and a silly old tower. Despite its growing popularity, the most daunting aspect facing anyone visiting Hungary is the tongue shredding Language. Reputed to be the hardest language in the world for an outsider to learn (beating even Welsh), any traveller to Hungary will be heartened to learn that Budapest has precious few English speakers, so you will have to (at least attempt to) mutter a few simple Hungarian phrases. Two phrases were of particular help to me. “Nem bessielek mud yarool” - “I do not speak Hungarian” and “Harom Dreher Kayrem” - “Three Drehers (Budapest’s most popular brand of lager) please”. If you manage to break down the language barrier, even partially, you’ll discover that the people of Budapest are a friendly bunch, unlike many other European capitals. If you venture off the tourist trail, into the grimy back streets of Budapest, the booze hounds that spend their lives stagnating in the many oasis’ of grog will always strike up conversations with you. Most of them puzzle over how you found your way out of tourist town and into their local. But beware; there is a thin line between a friendly local and a dribbling nutcase. One fateful evening, my friends and I were innocently staggering back to our hostel, smashed out of our minds when we were pounced upon by a crazy man (We named him Vladimir). At first he seemed to be just another friendly drunk, wanting to talk to a seemingly lost foreigner. His English was as bad as our Hungarian, our conversation consisted of “Hello!” to which we replied

“Nem bessielek mud yarool”, this repeated itself for almost an hour. It was during this monotonous conversation that I started to notice Vladimir’s greasy almost bald hair was suspiciously wet. His mouth foamed with an endless stream of saliva, most of which ended up on his head. His teeth, no more than pegs oozed an odour so spine shilling that my eyes began to wince. I managed to keep my distance but my friend Mark was square in the firing line. As well as a pool of phlegm seeping out of Vladimir’s mouth, the snot was streaming out his nose like a gooey flame thrower. Most of it ended up on his smiley bald head but Mark wasn’t safe. Our new zenoxiac friend decided he wanted to shake hands with all of us, I told him it was against my Zoroastrian faith, he didn’t know what I was on about but it did the job. Mark didn’t manage to weasel his way out, poor bugger. At the moment they shook hands, Vladimir sneezed all over my friend, covered in snot. At that, Vladimir decided he had bothered us enough, content in his evening, he left us The Hungarian Parliament standing majestically in the evening twilight with nothing but mucus and a dirty wet fart to remember him by. Real travel isn’t glamorous, people only think it is when they get back. The next day we spent the day drinking absinthe and talking to random passersby. “Alright Jimmy! Good old Jimmy, doesn’t say much, top lad Jimmy”. This continued all, day and all through the night. Sure you can visit cites and go to the attractions, with the hordes of tourists, but you never experience a city unless you live the life of a bum, at least for a few days. Saying that, if you do go to Budapest, do visit the attractions, the Parliament, the galleries and see the amazing architecture, it is an unforgettable city, just don’t be a tourist.

31 - Film “[Peter Morgan] is a great writer. He writes about big themes, but in a very accessible way. His work is always entertaining. He writes very human stories; take people you see as two-dimensional – politicians, royalty, celebrities – and he supplies the third-dimension, so you suddenly see them as husbands, fathers and sons.� “He’s funny, cheeky with a kind of irreverence about him, at the same time as being respectful to people’s humanity, making them more complicated rather than reducing them in any way.� “He’s just a great storyteller; he’s got an eye for a good story.� Although better known for his dramatic roles, Michael made an excellent appearance in American sitcom 30 Rock$

All you have to do is go to the library get a copy of a play, read it, work on it. Just through working on a brilliantly written scene as a performer, just makes you better. There’s nothing stopping anyone doing that.� “So I’d always just say work with the best. If your circumstances mean that that just means work on the best writing, then do it. Get used to working with the best all the time, and it will make you better.� 7 ) # X

“It is now the thing that’s most interesting to me is developing my own work. Doing things that are much more personal to me, whether it is a project like the Passion or writing something myself, or directing. For example, the production of Hamlet I’m doing at the end of the year is something I put together myself. Those are the sorts of things I’m more into, things that I can bring more of my own personal experiences to and my own stories to. So hopefully there’ll be more of that.� A charming, down-to-earth man, Michael Sheen is an actor who seems to know what he wants to achieve from the business but also what he can do for the Arts in his local area. People often say ‘don’t meet the people you admire in case they are perhaps not as nice as you’d hope’; Michael was an example of how wrong those people are. The animators pay attention to the intricate detail of the gnomes; the wear and tear of a garden gnome, the delicate clinking noises and their fragility. For those familiar with the play, the opening provides a comical interpretation of the long introduction with it being labelled “boring� by the red gnome. Comic references to Shakespeare are found

+ left slightly disappointed; they omit the classic “O Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo,� despite having a scene where Juliet is at the top of her tower with Gnomeo positioned below. Obviously being aimed at a younger completely truthful to the original work but instead provides a happy ending, where the feuding is resolved and the love up gnomes can live together in harmony.

8 ! American additions to the cast rise to the challenge and then some, with some hilarious scenes courtesy of American comedy heavyweights Wiig, Hader and Lo Truglio. The casting of Rogen as the rogue alien and titular character Paul was a masterstroke, and the CGI + + as excellent. For all its good points, predictability and perhaps an edge of deus ex machina in its climax. Also, does anyone else think that it’s about time Nick Frost gets a romantic storyline? Pegg’s great and all, but he’s hogging the ladies! Nevertheless, this latest offering from the dynamic British duo is top-notch, Š # gap left by Edgar Wright nicely. 3 Out of this world.

] >3 An absolute $ & phenomenal Geoffrey Rush and the utterly endearing Helena BonhamCarter impeccably support Colin Firth’s powerhouse performance as Bertie. Director Tom Hooper takes two men talking in a room and makes it completely cinematic. The Kings Speech + a critical darling as well as being utterly successful – there have even been reports of spontaneous applause breaking out as the credits roll. The script provides a dichotomy between heart-wrenching drama and laugh inducing comedy. Having recently cleaned up at awards ceremonies like a Henry Hoover, The Kings Speech has awards for every possible aspect

or another. It is refreshing to see a embraced by so many different awards ceremonies. That is just a testiment as to how good The Kings Speech is. 3 &

You know that times are hard when you’re drinking Baileys at one in the afternoon to get ‘inspiration’ for your terrible column. Recently, we haven’t been going out so much. When the word ‘alcoholic’ comes up in conversation, people look at us and laugh. We were starting to get the impression that people think we’re drunks! We had an epiphany. To tackle this, we came up with a three week drinking challenge – the challenge being not to touch alcohol. In theory, this sounded pretty easy. A fat girl jumped on Angharad’s foot in Oceana, so she was injured on crutches for a month. This made it easy for her to stay in. SPORT COMMENT PAGE Our writers have their say on the big issues Can cheating be curbed? Richard Fulton considers whether corruption in sport is so inherent that it cannot be changed. LANCE ARMSTRONG, the seven-time Tour de France winner, recently retired from cycling at the age of 39. In fact, this was his second retirement, having originally hung up his spandex in 2005 after his seventh consecutive tour win. ‘Why the return?’ you might ask. In short, Armstrong came out of retirement to prove his innocence. This man, on paper, is the most successful road cyclist ever, with numerous triumphs to his name, although according to a number of people, including fellow cyclists, everything Armstrong won was as a result of his alleged use of performance enhancing drugs. It is not surprising that he has had this sort of allegation brought against him for it seems that whenever an athlete breaks boundaries, he or she is accused of cheating the system in some form or another. The fact that this cynicism is so on modern attitudes towards success. Thanks to proven offenders, such as sprinters Marion Jones and Dwain Chambers, the initial reaction to exceptional achievement is to presume foul play. Almost as soon as Usain Bolt ] X 2008, with 3 gold medals and 2 world records in his hand luggage, questions were asked in numerous media outlets whether his phenomenal achievements were legitimate. This to me seems completely unfair. When someone

trains all year round, striving to achieve ultimate glory, to then have their victory questioned is appalling but is a byproduct of the numerous drug cheats ^ switchers. The fact of the matter is, people pay to watch sport in a balanced competitive environment and often pay very high prices to do so. Therefore, whenever an athlete is proven to be cheating in whatever form, the paying public begin to question whether they can trust any results. Never was this more obvious that in the Test series between the cricket teams of Pakistan and England at Lords last summer. Three of the Pakistani cricketers were accused, and have since been proven guilty, of spot ^ $ ? were accused of taking payment in order to carry out certain actions in the game, in this case a no ball. What is interesting is that, before the scandal broke, the grounds in the test series were full X ! atmosphere at each ground. However, once the story was made public, even with the ‘innocent until proven guilty’ scenario in place, the stadiums for the remaining matches were half empty, with a glum atmosphere amongst the supporters. This was one of the most obvious examples in recent sporting history that cheating, in whatever form, will force crowds away.

The most obvious reason is for glory; sport is a competitionbased activity and some people will do whatever it takes to get to the top. Others, like the Pakistani cricketers, do it for the money, which I believe to be a far more serious issue. Drug cheats, on the whole, don’t get away with it. There are entire organisations committed to stamping ‘doping’ out of sport; stringent drug tests are carried

This year has seen a considerable improvement with three wins already, whereas last time around the Titans only won two in total. SWANSEA STUDENT PREPARES ENGLAND FOR CRICKET WORLD CUP By Chris Penn Deputy Sports Editor ON JANUARY 7, 2011, the England Cricket team wrapped up an emphatic 3-1 Test victory over Australia in the 9<Z<°9<ZZ 7 that the Lions had roared in Oz for 24 years. Praise went to the usual likes of Andrew Strauss, James Anderson and Alastair Cook; however a creditable mention went to England Fitness Coach and Swansea University PhD student, Huw Bevan. Bevan is looking at the stresses and strains of Twenty20 and one-day cricket and how players recover from them for his PhD, by working closely with the Health and Sport Portfolio in the University’s College of Engineering. In particular he is working close to a senior lecturer, Dr. Liam Kilduff, who he met when Bevan was working as the Head Strength and Conditioning coach at the Ospreys. “We work from the point that I rely on what’s new in the area of Sports Science and we then discuss if we can apply it to his settingâ€? said Kilduff. “Also Huw possesses key performance questions that we then use to design studies to try and answer themâ€? he added. ] ! + England cricket team for about two years with there certainly being no coincidence with England’s rise to being a formidable side once again. SWANSEA MEN’S 2nds took on the University of Glamorgan men’s 1sts in squash last week. Swansea’s Berian Davies took on Š 8 ` ! “ Clode went up 0-7 within three minutes. The set concluded at 0-11, with Davies unable to register a point. The second set started differently however, with Davies showing some resilience and taking a 2-0 lead. Clode dominated the T and used an array of shots to move Davies round the court and the set ended 3-11, giving Glamorgan a two-set lead. & between both players and it was Davies who switched tactics in a bid to save the match. He came out even more determined and started showing some of his shot-making prowess. Both players used the angles on the court well, as they sought to out-manoeuvre each other. The match reached its climax with a nine-shot rally which ended when Clode played a lob hat ended the set 6-11 to Glamorgan. “The match was okay� Davies concluded. He was disappointed with the result but also had kind words for his opponent saying, “He is a very good player. He was tough to play against�. The second match of the day was between Swansea’s Alex Sadlier and Glamorgan’s Jason Gollaglee. Sadlier shots that drew errors from his opponent. At 4-0 it looked like Sadlier was cruising to a comfortable set victory, but he let Gollaglee into the match. That seemed to get Glamorgan going as Gollaglee scored another successive point when the referee awarded him a stroke. Gollaglee raised his game by dominating the T and the score quickly reached 8-6. Sadlier continued to take the lead until he committed an error to level the score at 11-11 before he eventually came out on top in the set, 14-16. The second set saw Sadlier come out strong, and the set ended 11-5. The tables were turned in the next set however, when Gollaglee blazed through to win 4-11. The match between Sadlier and Gollaglee would decide the overall winner on the day. Both players started to play some incredible shots and it looked like Sadlier was up against it but he pulled off a sensational comeback to eventually win the set 13-11. At this point, Swansea started to believe and in

By Daniel Parker Sports Reporter ON A SUNNY March afternoon there was a sporting master class taking place in the indoor environs of the Sports Centre as Swansea Men’s Badminton’s 1sts secured an emphatic win over Aberystwyth 2nds to win the Division Two Title. Swansea have brushed aside all opposition this season with successive 8-0 demolition jobs on court, and have proven their credentials not just as a side worthy of promotion to Division One, but richly deserving of Premier League status. The afternoon was already off to a bad start for Aberystwyth when they arrived in South Wales without a full lineup, meaning that they were instantly +X 9 < $ { + this, the Swansea doubles line-up of ^ ] year Sam Crossley went on to produce a ruthless display against Aberystwyth’s + 8 + the match with 21-9 and 21-14 games victories. On the adjacent court, Swansea’s duo of Ben Wong and John Nolan were equally calm and collected as they completed two 21-5 routs to put Swansea 4-0 to the good overall. ) Š secured a match in two games (21-14, 21-18) although the Welsh trainee was presented with a stern challenge from

his Aberystwyth counterpart. The next set of matches produced equally emphatic Swansea wins. Spencer and Crossley threw in some bullet-fast smashes of the shuttlecock in 21-12 and 21-10 game victories, while Wong and Nolan forced mistakes from Aberystwyth, who were ultimately + 9Z ZZ 9Z Z¤ scorelines. 7 ˜ < ^ ! title were already safely in green and white hands, though Swansea had yet another ace in the pack as captain Barry Š singles action.
