I didn’t realise that it was this really devastating one 200 miles away from Tokyo. Carl was presented with an initial problem as the news reports are broadcast in Japanese. “I’m quite lucky that I live with some Chinese girls, and they can speak Japanese. So we all huddled around the TV, but at that point there was nothing about the nuclear threat; it was all about the tsunami. All the updates were about the tsunami, the nuclear worry didn’t come out until about 36hours after. Carl was able to view the news through BBC News 24, a channel which is not usually broadcast in Japan. “I was watching the BBC in Britain

Also people are now really worried about the sushi because the nuclear fallout was being brushed out to sea. I saw a sushi chef outside his restaurant trying to get people to come in but people just don’t want to eat sushi at the moment. When asked if he was advised to evacuate Tokyo, Carl revealed that

GOLD DIGGERZ

LET DOWN: Claims house on Brynmill Terrace was not what they signed for

By Sarah Wilson News Reporter FOUR STUDENTS are taking letting agency, “Student Digzâ€? to court after being inadvertently led to sign the wrong contract for a house. A Student Digz director showed three of the potential tenants around the wrong house in Brynmill during February 2010. The students then unknowingly signed a contract for number 22, while under the impression they were signing number for 25; the house they were viewing. The four students, Vanessa Talbutt, Virginia Rudge, John Wignall and Mitchell Morgan were released from the contract with their summer retainer returned by the landlord. However, Student Digz refused to refund the Administration Fee of ÂŁ200. After Numerous attempts to resolve the matter, the students resorted to legal action through the Small Claims Court. Along with Administration Fees still owed to them, the students now ask Student Digz to cover the cost of court and warrant fees that total over ÂŁ500. Over the past year, the students have struggled to pay for the bailiff and court fee’s whilst still in full time education. They believe it’s only fair that Student

Digs take responsibility for the stress and anxiety caused by the confusion in contracts. They wish for an apology from the letting agency, acknowledging the distress they’ve endured in order to get their Administration Fees returned to them. In a letter to the students in October 2010, Student Digz asked that they “mutually agree that a mistake was made by both parties and that the goodwill shown and money saved by negotiating the Claimants out of a legally binding, signed Tenancy Agreement is enough to offer by way of compensation. FIRST TECHNOLOGICAL ELECTIONS

– Advantage or Disadvantage?

By Philip Dewey Election Reporter ELECTIONS THIS year at Swansea University have seen a new form of voting come into place. Candidates have tried to combat this change in voting by embracing new forms of media to get their manifestos and messages across. For instance, ) ($ # videos keeping potential voters updated daily. The majority of candidates have posted videos on to the Student Union website in which they put forward their ideas.

In many ways, virtual voting has isolated candidates from the very people they are trying to represent. Students I spoke to believe that the new system of online voting is a good thing, making it easier for students to vote when and where they wish as opposed to queuing up at the university at certain times of the day. They also believed that people would be more likely to vote. However, this has been one of the lowest turn-outs at Swansea University’s student elections for some years. Some of the candidates believe that this could be linked to the switch to online voting.

The main complaint amongst the ten candidates I spoke to, was that the election in general and the awareness of the new system of voting has not been publicised enough; there has been no form of information to tell the students how to vote. Becca Taylor and Mahaboob Basha believed that not enough had been done to educate students about online voting, but they essentially thought that the new system was more accessible. Jay Owen, Eleri Jones, Amy Williams, Tom Upton and Sarah Woodvine thought that it would be # % $ of online voting and the ballot box. However, they said that the opportunities for online campaigning through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter had spread awareness of the elections, and that it was good to be moving forward technologically. Steve Marshall, Samina Trickey and Ceri Parker said they preferred the ballot form of voting because it was easier for people to lie about voting; the online system has reduced the spirit and atmosphere of the occasion. They believe that generally, less people have voted. It is true that the technological advances of this year’s election have changed the way people are campaigning and voting, but there are many people who are questioning whether this change is for the better or worse.

E-VOTE ERROR By Laura Richards News Editor THE START of voting was marred by an error which saw a candidate missed off the electoral list. Jordon Owen was left off the Societies and Services list and instead Lewis Edwards, a Presidential candidate was included. Luckily, the error was noticed almost hour. Stuart Rice, Union Manager, reiterated, “When the positions were put online there was a technical issue which put the wrong candidate in a wrong position. It was taken down as soon as it was noticed and voting was stopped and re-done. Everyone was contacted, about 50 in total, explaining

what had happened and that they had the opportunity to re-vote. Jordon Owen commented, “Obviously I was very angry with this error, but I understand that it’s not

Sound familiar? The dilemma was played to death last week as the pamphleteers descended overnight upon campus, and posters were proudly displayed on every window trying to convince you to vote this way and that. Whilst it matters to many students of the university, most of you would have taken the long way around campus last Thursday to avoid being badgered by the swarms of campaigners running about. It is clear that many students underestimate the importance and authority that comes with the job. Other people voiced concerns that the candidates did not offer what students really wanted and that all the decisions came from the top regardless of who won their campaigns. Whilst it is a good thing to have a student representative many feel that, whatever the result, it will be on no consequence. In speaking to other students, most were simply fed up with the chanting and screaming of the campaign teams obstructing their way through campus, forming the response ‘I HAVE

PLEASE HELP: Japanese students raise money for tsunami appeal By Alun Rhys Chivers World News Editor RARELY HAS Fulton House foyer experienced such an array of colour, tastes and a vibrant collection of cultural exhibition as that organised by members of the Japanese Society during the last week. One could be forgiven for thinking it was a national festival being celebrated, as traditional costumes were donned, and as origami models and cakes adorned the stall. But a closer look behind the beaming smiles told a far more sombre tale – one of angst, desperation and heartfelt concern by members of Swansea’s Japanese community for their friends and fellow nationals whose lives have been blighted by recent events. The earthquake in Northern Japan measured 9.0 and it, along with a tsunami, has seen more than 9,000 people killed and a further 12,000 missing, feared dead. There are now further concerns of radioactive contamination after a series of blasts at Fukushima nuclear station as a result of the earthquake. Driven by a desire to lift the spirits of people back home and to see their beloved Japan rise from the darkest days in its turbulent history, the Japanese Society joined the Japan Earthquake

Relief Fund through the Red Cross. The Fund was established by the London Business School in the days following the natural disasters, and the Society promptly offered its support. Cries of ‘Please help Japan’ and :' $ $, corridors of Fulton House. Although they were not personal cries for help, they echoed the harrowing pictures across the world in recent weeks. Speaking to the Society’s founder, Ayaki Omura, it quickly became apparent that no member of the Society had been directly affected by recent events back home, but that they all knew people who had – from friends, to friends of friends. Ayaki told stories of houses being washed away and people going missing. Ayaki told The Waterfront, “We want to help our people. So, did Ayaki and other members of the Japanese Society have a monetary target in mind? “We want people to give what they feel they want to give, so we have no target. This weekend, the Society were out and about in Castle Square, and return to Fulton House today and tomorrow for the last stretch of their fundraising efforts.

Is it right to give Aid to a First World Country? By Laura Richards Spot the difference in the following three statements. In 2004, the Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami killed over 230,000 people with the UK donating ÂŁ75million to the appeal. In 2010, the Haiti Earthquake killed over 225,000 people with the UK donating ÂŁ20million of aid. In 2011 the Japan Earthquake has so far killed over 9,000 people and the world have all rallied together to try to provide aid to the country. Two of the above disasters took place in third world countries, where the government physically could not afford to bring to country back from ruin. The

I know that Japan have been hit hard by their recent earthquake and I understand that they do need help. However, Haitian people are still

In a time of crisis people will always rally around and provide support no matter who is in need, it is the most humanitarian thing to do and hopefully if Britain was ever in need we would have the same response.

Interview with Matt Robinson – Conservative Party By Adele MacGregor This year’s surprising Presidential candidate, third year Law and American Studies student Matthew Robinson, known in the sabbatical elections as ‘Matthew Robinson – Conservative Party’, recently caused a stir at this year’s hustings (Quiz the Candidates) with his remarks and opinions that + student view. Robinson gave a few hours of the % $ $ The Waterfront on his decision to run $ % <$ reasons for supporting the recent cuts to higher education and why he feels he will not be a successful candidate in this year’s sabbatical elections. Robinson’s main concern regarding the elections overall is that the turn out for voting has been so low in recent years and that this year will be no different. Insisting that the Students Union have % # $ electronic voting, Robinson feels that there has not been enough publicity for the system and worries what kind of mandate the successful candidates have

With an avid interest in American politics, Robinson argues that the current UK Conservative Party are closer to the American Democrat Party than the right leaning Republican party. With regard to the education cuts proposed and passed by the current coalition government, Robinson said he feels that the reaction was somewhat hysterical; observing that even the NUS has stated that the effects had been “dramatized. Robinson says that there is only so much money to be had, adding that it was the previous

Labour government that left us in such a shambolic economic state and insists that students will not be priced out of Education. Robinson stresses that he would hate to see the country go to the US education system further stating that he does not claim that everything the current coalition government does is right but that they are often unnecessarily demonised. Robinson insists that he was not at all against students participating in the protest against education cuts but he did have issues with the Students Union subsidising students, spending an estimated ÂŁ3,000 on transporting the students to the event. Moreover Robinson said that if the Students Union can afford to spend ÂŁ3,000 on sending students to London “they sure as hell can afford to put more into the student paper and give it the autonomy and funding it deservesâ€? adding that it would be wise to spend money at the University before spending it elsewhere. EVERYTHING EVERYTHING

MUSIC WRITER DAN CHARMAN CAUGHT UP WITH EVERYTHING EVERYTHING LEAD SINGER JON HIGGS AS HE WANDERED THE STREETS OF BERLIN WHILST ON TOUR IN EUROPE. Hey Jon! Where are you guys now? We are in Berlin! We were in Cologne last night – yeah Cologne was pretty crazy! It was good, it was really nice and it was a great venue and a good crowd and all the rest of it so we were pleased with that. For people who don’t know that much about Everything Everything, how did you guys get together as you’re all from all over the UK We are yeah – I was in school with two guys in Northumberland and then I went to University in Manchester and met Jeremy (Prichard) our bass player so I got those guys from home to move to Manchester. And since then we’ve changed guitarists. Mike (Spearman) and I were from Northumberland; Jeremy’s from Kent and our new guitarist (Alex Robertshaw) is from Guernsey. We live in Manchester but That must be a big commitment, moving to Manchester, for the band? Yeah well it was a big step for everyone, we all believed in the band and yeah, you have to have some sort of leap of faith at some point when you give up your job or whatever and think “yeah – we’re going to try and do this! and somehow it worked, luckily! You’re on your European tour into Europe as a whole band? No, we came out here last year just to do a German tour which was, at the time, just our favourite thing we’d ever done. I think it still is, it has such a big place in our hearts as it’s so nice to get out to somewhere new. People were coming to the shows and they were singing along and we thought that was so crazy because we weren’t even getting that back home! We had never been there before and we weren’t really on the radio so we couldn’t actually understand how it happened! And this time, we’re going all over the place – some of the shows are sold out! It just feels really strange that people are interested! It must be a big thing as a band to have fans and supporters all across Europe, wanting to see you? Yeah! It feels really great because

back home there’s not the desire. People don’t go: “oh! Have you seen the newest French band? or “Have you seen the newest Italian band? and you come out from England and you can go around Europe and people come out and they see you and they are talking about other bands from England. You think, “This is strange! It’s a big privilege and it gives you a massive boost and sometimes we don’t think you deserve it! You guys have put in the work – you have been around for 4 years now. Yeah, we started around the end of 2007 so yeah – 4 years as a band! What makes playing in Europe so different to playing within the UK? There’s a different passion and they are always really up for it. Really respectful and they treat you really, really well – better than they do at home I’m not afraid to say! The venues, the crew you meet, and the crowd – everything is much more open! The whole attitude towards being in a band is different away from home; it seems a much more respectable thing to do away from home. Do you have a favourite country you have visited, or a country you’re really looking forward to? We absolutely loved going to America! When we went to South by Southwest (SXSW) (which is happening right now) last year we went and had an amazing time. And Japan we really liked, the Western-Eastern culture is far apart. We were hoping to go back in a month’s time but with all the troubles there, it looks very unlikely. We would really like to get into Russia, and China – that kind of area. Bands have started to go out there more and more and it would be pretty cool to go out to China and see what is going on there! And India, too! You just wonder what the music infrastructure is like there to be a touring band you know, it would be a strange and interesting thing to do! What is the best food on tour? Do you guys enjoy the local cuisine? Actually, in our experience it has to be Germany! We went to Munich, we played and they gave us this soup – it was orange soup and we looked at each other thinking “what the hell is this soup! and they gave us this big massive vat of it. It was kind

of like coconut! Everywhere we go in Germany they slam down a huge amount of bread and meat and cheese, regardless of the time of day. The beer is great, everywhere we go they give us their own cities’ beer. It’s what they do, it’s all varied wherever you go and it’s all really good stuff, too.

What’s it like living so close together for weeks on end? It’s class, we’ve got a double-decker one! We were expecting a single one so that’s great. We’ve got like, 12 beds and there are only six of us on the tour! So we have a little kitchen, all the stuff we need.

You guys are playing Glastonbury again this year. It’s arguably one of the biggest and most well-known festivals on Earth. How massive is it for you guys to be invited there again?

Any particular songs, artists or albums you guys play on the bus to keep you going?

It’s massive – it’s the big one! I think any band would be disappointed not to do it once they have already done it I think. We are really looking forward to that; we had an amazing day last year as it was really hot and sunny! We just loved it. Have you got any advice for festival goers this summer? Any special items to pack? Yeah, Those What

Water! Haha! Bogroll! are the big ones. about

wet

We’re in the middle of trying to get a hold of this Frank Zappa DVD that we watched a lot when we were making the last record. The music is completely ridiculous and the live show of his; we’re going to try and a shower and WiFi! Right now I’m just wandering around the streets of Berlin looking for something interesting! Man Alive was a huge release for you guys last year. Are you planning on heading into the studio after your tour and festival dates?

wipes?

Wet wipes, yeah! I just didn’t want to say that, haha! That’s an essential! Tell us about your tour bus!

We are looking at going into the studio sooner than that, before the festivals, to lay down two or three tracks that we feel are the strongest at the moment. We don’t want to leave

it too late as it’s amazing how quickly people forget about bands. So we want to keep up the momentum from last year. It’s good to have new stuff and everyone wants to have new stuff! Especially us so we’ll try and get the ball rolling soon on new recordings. Would you recommend any other UK bands to us? Yeah! There’s a band called Dutch Uncles and I’m not sure how well known they are. They are a band coming out of Manchester that we think are really great and we’re really good friends with them. They’re doing a really good thing for music and they’re really exciting to listen to with a strange sound. They use classic music software to record rock songs – it’s amazing but you have to hear it to really understand it! Have you met a bit of a knobhead celebrity or band? Let’s see... Mr. Motivator was a bit shirty! Haha... no he wasn’t! Last question. Sum up Everything Everything in 3 words... Worst Dan Charman

A new Sound & '* $ " power and happiness had come to an + for Black Sabbath to unleash hell upon the music scene of the early 1970’s. The metal scene was just starting to reveal its gruesome face, creeping out of the womb; with some bands like The Beatles demonstrating elements of metal in songs such as Helter Skelter, no one truly embraced the genre until the 1970’s. With Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple each honing their unique sound, Sabbath were on to something a lot darker; they genuinely captured the essence of the word ‘Heavy’.

Something Dark from Birmingham In 1968 Black Sabbath was created; Tony Iommi with the doom ridden guitar riffs, Geezer Butler and his bluesy basslines, Bill ward pounding at the drums and with last but not least, Ozzy Osbourne and his signature vocals. MUSIC REVIEWS

The Waterfront’s music writers tuck into some of the latest releases. Complete Short Stories - Burn

Wiz Khalifa – Black And Yellow

The Naked and Famous – Young Blood

Avril Lavigne – What The Hell

The Complete Short Stories are a (yet) unsigned band that’re gaining favour with the radio waves; having been recently played on Radio One, which is an impressive feat for such an arguably small band with only a few hundred friends on the ancient relic that is MySpace, and barely over a thousand on Facebook. ‘Burn’ is a song that probably can’t compete with the giants in the charts, but that

to those looking for something a little different, more alternative and experimental; a single that sounds distinctly British, much more relaxing, and the sort of thing you could imagine yourself listening to on a lazy summer day. He said that the team were ‘bitterly disappointed’ with losing out on the league title but conceded that they had been playing a higher standard of opposition this year. His expectations for the Varsity match are good, believing the team are well prepared. Members of the Ospreys and Scarlets coaching team have taken training sessions with the players and they have been working with Sports Vision Wales to “improve awareness and speed of information processing in their peripheral vision. Lancaster said the team would have a light training session in the week leading up to the match but would generally prepare for the game as they would any other. He said that Cardiff University deserved respect due to their strong results and that it will be interesting to see the atmosphere at the stadium as the players will not be used to an occasion of this scale. Swansea head to Cardiff with victory in mind and it is guaranteed to be a thrilling game in one of the greatest stadiums in world sport. Hopefully the crowd at the Millennium Stadium will be cheering “West is Best and we’ll be bringing the Welsh Varsity championship back to Swansea.

Beyond the Varsity performance the ladies are preparing for a university competition in Telford on April 22 by

having four training sessions a week. Looking at the routine for this Wednesday, Phillips admitted that it has been hard work. “Last year’s routine was more serious and didn’t change much from our competition one she said. “This year we are doing a different routine from our competition one which is much more entertaining and the crowd will hopefully enjoy it. As well as doing the half-time show, the cheerleaders will also be lending their support to the Fresher’s Rugby as they look to make their presence felt in the capital. People & Planet on tour! Recently the members of Swansea People & Planet travelled to Bangor for the regional Welsh gathering of People & Planet societies. This was a fun social gathering, the highlight of which had to be dressing up in banana suits and racing each other, and the fair trade vs conventional brands taste test (mmm chocolate!). However, it wasn’t all fun and games - we also attended workshops, and discussed means of how we could make our universities sign up to the ‘Buy Right’ campaign, which wants to ensure university clothing does not originate from sweatshops. There were also serious matters to deal with, including discussions and voting on motions that affect the national People & Planet group. The most important issue being how to fund raise so that we can be a completely independent campaigning organisation. The trip each way between Swansea and Bangor was a marathon 5.30 hour train journey, which makes you realise Wales really needs to improve its public transport infrastructure! Thanks to Sian, and the rest of the guys at Bangor who organised this! Matthew Cobb, People & Planet Social Sec.

Choral Society Summer Concert This year, Swansea University Choral Society’s Summer Concert will be held on Saturday 14th May, 7:30pm at St. Paul’s Church, Sketty. For this concert our chosen charity is The Stroke Association, and we hope that with your attendance we can raise as much money as possible, and donate 50% of our ticket sales to this worthwhile cause. We aim to be a versatile singing group, so this term we have expanded our repertoire and chosen to perform pieces from genres such as ‘modern contemporary’ and ‘the musicals,’ as well as our usual ‘classical’ pieces. We are excited about diversifying and know that it will make for a high-energy and thrilling concert. The choir and committee would also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our President, Emily Duffy, for all of her hard work during her three years on the committee. Your presence will undoubtedly be missed.

travel.waterfront@hotmail.co.uk

Hello again you lucky readers. We are back again throwing the best travel related things at you. Last week we played a game called ‘Spot the Funny Word’ and we have a winner. The one (and only) entrant was Mr Sam Barnett, a distinguished third year student politician, who correctly identified the word as ‘Zenoxaic’ located half way through his own article. Well done Sam! A pack of pickled onion Space Raiders are heading your way! Back to the serious issues, we have been offered a unique once-in-a-lifetime gift of a space exhibition which you can apply for! Read on to discover how.

Swansea’s Space Flight Mission World in Motion scours the market to search for the best travel deals for you but this time the offer has come to us! We have frequently been described as ‘out of this world’ but this is taking it too far....literally. Read on to discover how to get involved in Prof. Rhill’s mission to explore outer space! Dear Students, Space tourism is becoming a reality and by 2020 we hope to make it commercially available at an affordable price. The ISC (International Space Committee) is looking for volunteers to help make this a reality and Swansea University has been cited as one of the remaining European universities where we feel the students have the initiative and creativity to help us complete our mission. The mission, known as the Flare-Orbit Observatory Lunation, has been researched and commissioned by myself, Prof. Rhill, and my international team of experts. The theory studies the monthly moon cycle and how it synchronises with the lunar flare and aims to conclusively discover a heating system for a tourist hotel in space. We are looking for a student to undergo space travel and document their experiences in online reports and video blogs. Due to the sensitive nature of the project full details cannot currently be publicly released. If you are selected then you can spend the summer months circling the globe to study outer space and build for the future. The lucky candidates will be fully trained at the European Space Agency’s headquarters in Paris and will then undergo the space mission itself, due to commence in late July and ending in late September. Prof. Antony Percival Rhill, (a.p.rhill@isc.in) Director of Public Relations, International Space Committee This is truly an event that cannot be missed. If you fancy some space food and bashing your head on the cupboards in zerogravity, please e-mail us or Dr. Rhill, or you can find out more by going to Prof. Rhill’s open lecture at 4 pm on Friday 1st April at Faraday K. See you there!

That could be you!

How to Bargain Student travellers in many countries are an easy target for street vendors and touts on the streets aiming to make a quick fix of cash. Whilst negotiating for an item is fun, their suggested asking price for food, drinks or the common tourist gimmick is often an attempt of exhortation. Be firm and give those pikeys as good as you get by following some simple and effective bartering techniques. Appearance: If daddy has paid for you to explore the big bad world by giving you a sh*t load of Hollister or Abercrombe and Fitch then I have no sympathy. These spoilt teeny-bop gappers are the ones that deserve to be ripped off! You’re a traveller or volunteer for fox sake and portray this fact: immerse yourself in the culture by dressing traditionally and, where possible, speak the native language. A trader will appreciate your effort and will not treat you like a mug. Keep your money hidden and say that you have a limited amount of cash. Don’t be too keen: If you scream ‘OMG I MUST HAVE THIS’ in the middle of the marketplace then you have no hope. Through acting too interest the seller knows he will be going home early tonight. Play it cool – act like you don’t really need it and have them come to you, immediately placing yourself in a dominant position.

Laugh: Establish a friendly rapport with the seller before getting down to the price. Tell them about your motives for being in their country and allow them to get to know you. It is often a good idea to ask someone you trust what you should pay for a product before entering the bargaining situation. Act confident: A seller’s opening offer will be extortionate and your retort must be equally as radical. Go as low as 1/10 of the asking price which will create a comeback of the word ‘pffft’. The general rule is to meet just below the middle and you can achieve this by bluffing (such as walking away or declining the sale completely). Don’t be guilt-tripped by what they say as more often than not it is an attempt of emotional blackmail. These guys have been bartering for years and know how to manipulate a customer. Don’t be sucked in by their lies.

If an item is generating a profit then the seller will eventually yield to your demands and you will leave happy. In saying this remember that as a human being you have a conscience – making a living is hard, especially in poorer countries, and what may be a matter of pence to you may be the price of a hot meal for someone else.

The “Smurfs of Papua New Guinea In deep murky forests of the remote Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, in an only recently explored volcanic crater in the centre of the Island, a startling discovery has been made. Previously thought of as impossible by scientists around the world, evidence has emerged of a newly discovered species of human. Thought to have died out in Indonesia over 10,000 years ago on the isle of Sumbawa, skeletal evidence suggested that this subspecies stood at only 2ft tall. However the most startling discovery was only revealed when Dr Robin Leitch of the Handom Rand Institute of Cape Town, South Africa, led an expedition to the previously unexplored Mount Bosavi Crater, a vast volcanic valley at the center of the PNG rainforest. Looking only to document the unique flora of the valley, he was flabbergasted when he discovered the pygmy humans with particularly unusual skin. Dr Leitch said the humans were “characterised by their distinctive royal blue skin and a minuscule size. No pictures have been taken of the so called “smurfs due to all the total failure of all of the cameras of Dr Leitch’s team; however their society has been described in some detail. Due to the hostile environment in which they inhabit, they have gained the ability to re ingest their faeces and gain its nutrition; this process can be repeated up to eight times before the poo is finally discarded. This has led to toilets becoming places of worship and commerce in their society; unusually poo is bought and sold in a primitive barter system so that poo is shared between members of the community. “The largest stool samples are preserved and worshipped as deities, presumably in the hope of achieving future groggers, explained Professor April Lofo. The “smurfs language was equally intriguing, although complex, the same word, “Mufsr is used in all sentences on its own, combined with other words frequently, linguist Dr Margaret Thatcher said “It’s really quite perplexing, I believe it symbolises the smurfs connection with sensible monetary policy and the hard work the smurfs put into keeping a lid on inflation. Dr Thatcher went on to say “it’s startling to see such an efficient economy, although they have no currency, the trade unions in this society have been all but flattened, despite this there is low unemployment amongst the smurfs and high levels of flexibility among the workforce. So impressed was Dr Thatcher by the smurfs, that she returned to PNG, against the wishes of Dr Leitch and his team representing the International Institute of Science who announced that if she returned she would infect the culture with outside influences. Undeterred, Dr Thatcher left her job as chief linguist at the UN where she translated speeches into 109 languages simultaneously to become leader of the smurf civilisation. However, when Thatcher introduced herself to the smurfs after learning their language, she was greeted with violence. The smurfs gave her an ultimatum, “turn around and never come back however, her aide, Dr Nigel Lawson Ph.D. Spoke of how Dr Thatcher shouted at the smurfs “You turn if you want to, the lady is not for turning. These were Dr Thatcher’s last words according to her aides, Dr Lawson and Professor Edwina Currie who decided to make the u-turn and run for their lives. Dr Leitch’s team have since returned to New Guinea to study the civilisation in greater depth although

The Mount Bosavi Crater, Papua New Guinea. Home to the recently discovered Leitch Pygmy subspecies of human, also known as the Leitch Smurf have no plans to reveal themselves like the late Dr Margaret Thatcher. Dr Leitch’s team have also managed to obtain photographic evidence of the smurfs existence, however these photographs were later taken and classified by the United World Body for the Protection of Indigenous and Vulnerable Peoples in the World (or UWBPIVPW for short) in order to protect the privacy of this newly discovered civilisation and to stop poachers killing the smurfs for their valuable eyeballs which store enough energy to power the entire world cleanly for the remainder of the millennium. Dr Leitch will be speaking about his discoveries in Faraday A on Friday 32nd of March, at 7pm. This will be a public lecture so please email in advance, as a challenge so that only the smartest people attend; we will let you find the email address yourself.

Students’ on Tour: Ireland

By Desirae Gostlin in Dublin Dublin on a student’s budget is not an easy task, especially in St. Patrick’s Day; however, the Travel Shop offers a pretty good deal. I was in Dublin for St. Pat’s, and although I was disappointed at the lack of green beer, the experience is well worth the price. Dublin offers a tour of the city daily for free! It meets at city hall at 11:00 and 13:00; the tour is three hours long and was a great introduction to the city. Chrsit Church Cathedral and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are stunning from the outside, but cost admission. St. Augustine and St. John’s Cathedral is a beautiful (and free) alternative if you wish to see the interior of a cathedral in Dublin. And who can forget about the Guinness storehouse? Admission cost 11â‚Źuro and comes with a free a pint at the end, which you learn to pour. The St. Patrick’s Day parade is a must-see, but if you want to actually be able to see the parade then I’d suggest getting there early, or climb the statue of Daniel O’Connel in order to get a front row seat to the spectacle. If you’re staying a hostel (which you most likely are) then my suggestion is to look into any special deals they have going on there. Isaac’s Hostel had an Irish stew dinner with a pint of Guinness all for the low low price of 5â‚Źuro; considering a pint of Guinness runs standard of about 4-6â‚Źuro and a bowl of Irish stew is about 8-12â‚Źuro, this was a pretty good deal. Isaac’s also had a “backpackers’ beer garden,â€? which served pints of Heineken for 2.50â‚Źuro, a great way to save some dough because pints run standard of 4-6â‚Źuro in regular pubs, as I mentioned before. If you’re in the mood to explore some of Ireland outside of Dublin, then I recommend Malahide Castle. It’s about a half hour’s train ride outside the city. If you’re traveling with a partner an all-day pass is going to cost about 14.50â‚Źuro for both tickets. Malahide charges an entry fee, but if you’re on a tight budget, the grounds are scenic and a good opportunity to snap some photos that you can actually show your mum. ) % P $ % , already got that all-day train ticket. Howth also offers a great backdrop for photos. There’s a lighthouse and fresh seafood, and if you’re lucky you might see seals hanging out in the harbor. There were three hanging around when I was there. I recommend lunch there at the Bloody Stream. Don’t let the name turn you off, it’s really quite decent food, even if the service is crap. The lunch menu costs about 8.50â‚Źuro.

Waterfront 202- 28/03/11

Waterfront TV What’s on the tube Rewind... In this issue, Andy Williams takes a rewind through classic TV shows of the 1990’s

Teen Angel With only 17 episodes in existence, you would be forgiven for not having heard of this hidden gem. Teen Angel focussed on high schooler Steve Beauchamp just after the loss of his best friend Marty DePolo. Marty died after eating a 6-month-old hamburger but comes back as Steve’s guardian angel. Riddled with popular culture references and intertextuality, Teen Angel was sadly never given the run it deserved on television although it was great fun while it lasted.

Recess Oh Recess, how my parents hated you. Set in Third Street School around a group of friends who constantly get into mischief, Recess was truly great. TJ, Vince, Gus, Mikey, Gretchen and Spinelli were all loveable characters in their own way – not to mention the many peripheral characters such as the diggers, King Bob, Hustler Kid and the Ashley’s to name a few. Recess shows the protagonists dealing with situations and the life lessons that they learn from their lives in the fourth grade with a great amount of heart and humour.

Smart Guy Running for a total of 51 seasons, Smart Guy was a staple of the Disney channel in the late 1990’s – and something worth running home from school for. Telling the story of T.J Henderson, a smart 10 year old who has been accelerated to being in high school. Many of the episodes revolve around T.J fitting into school or how he overshadows his older yet underachieving brother. The dynamic of the show was wholesome and the tone often hilarious, Smart Guy is one of the gems of the 1990’s.

Kenan and Kel Awww here it goes. Kenan and Kel was beloved by almost everyone. Kenan, a scheming teenager with his mind preoccupied on girls and hair-brained money making schemes with Kel as his dim, orange soda obsessed sidekick. With every episode bookended by sections where the duo speak to the live studio audience, Kenan and Kel’s storylines were often recycled, yet the show never felt stale. Running over 4 years, for my money, Kenan and Kel represents the pinnacle of Nickelodeon programming.

Sabrina, the Teenage Witch Based upon a series of comic books, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch tells the story of Sabrina Spellman as on her 16th birthday, she discovers she is a witch. With the help of her Aunts Hilda and Zelda and Salem - a man who has been sentenced to a century in a cats body – Sabrina must attempt to succeed as a with whilst successfully navigate her way through a ‘normal’ teenage life. After running for a total of 163 episodes and spawning 3 TV movies, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch was hugely successful and highly popular.

Saved by the Bell Despite originally running between 1989 and 1993, Saved By The Bell remained on British television until 2006. Set in Bayside High School, the series followed a group of students at the school. The show was notable due to the fact that it dealt not only with comical issues, but also real social issues such as, drug use, friendship, homelessness and divorce. The cast was truly an ensemble with each character representing different section of the American high school, Zach Morris as a charming schemer, AC Slater as the Jock, Kelly Kapowski as the all-American cheerleader, Lisa Turtle as the gossip queen, Jessie Spano as a know-it-all, Samuel ‘Screech’ Powers as the loveable nerd and all these are watched by the show’s authority figure, Mr Belding. Saved by the Bell was hugely successful and highly influential as a precursor to shows such as Dawsons Creek and The O.C.

The Crystal Maze Running for a total of 83 episodes and 6 series, The Crystal Maze was the ultimate in high concept game show that epitomised the 1990’s. The Maze consisted of 4 different zones (Aztec, Medieval, Industrial – later ocean and Futuristic), inside each zone would consist of tasks that upon successful completion, gave the contestants a crystal and more time in the eponymous Crystal Maze which would give them money. Being both highly successful and highly enjoyable, The Crystal Maze was high-concept, quick-witted entertainment at its best.

Art Attack Three words: Neil Buchanan’s Jumpers. Art Attack was the staple of CITV during the 1990’s. Everybody remembers clambering to get their hands on a good helping of PVA glue and poster paint just to attempt to copy Neil’s latest artistic masterpiece. And The Head; who didn’t love a little bit of The Head? He stole the show in all of his moving-clay glory. Another highlight of each show would be the Big Art Attack, wherein Neil would put together seemingly random pieces of whatever he had lying around which always looked horrific until the camera pulled up to show what was usually an awe-inspiring scene. Maybe I’m remembering all these shows with rose-tinted glasses but 90’s TV makes shows such as Hannah Montana or Suite Life of Zach and Cody look distinctly average. The greatest revelation from coming out of the creation of this article is the realisation that Sports Editor Ben Donovan looks exactly like Gus Griswald from Recess (for further proof, check out page 27).

My Top 5 Picks... Each issue we put the question to one of the Waterfront faithful. What are your top 5 TV shows of all time? This week, Deputy Sports Editor Chris Penn answers... How I Met Your Mother

Futurama

Living in the shadow of ever-successful US sitcom Friends, How I Met Your Mother sees main character Ted Moseby (Josh Radnor) telling his kids in the year 2030 the story of how he met their mother as well as the antics of his friends Marshall, Lily, Robin and Barney. It is the latter of those friends that does steal the show. Neil Patrick Harris plays the witty, suit loving womanizer Barney Stinson whose schemes, one-liners and general character traits regular tickle the funny bone. However despite season 6 seeing the programme taking the ill-fated route of so many American sitcoms, the few seasons are definitely worth a watch.

Futurama is just a teenager version of The Simpsons, mainly because of the Bender. Groening got it right when he designed the cigar loving, beer drinking, loud mouthed robot. He is the best friend of Philip J. Fry who was cryogenically frozen for 1000 years on New Year’s Eve 1999 and they both end up working in a delivery firm, with his distant nephew Professor Farnsworth and are soon to develop feeling for the ship’s pilot, Leela. In my opinion it was sometimes just like a carbon copy of The Simpsons however it developed into being very diverse both character and plot wise, yet it may not have been as successful as the people from Springfield, I would bite Bender’s shiny metal a** over eating Bart’s shorts any day of the week.

Rome Sex and violence I guess are two features that draw this show to the male agenda however I believe it gives a good count of historical Rome. Consisting of 2 seasons, the show follows the lives of two Roman soldiers- Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo. Season 1 is set during the leadership of Julius Caesar as he deals with the civil war of 49BC before his assassination 44 BC. Season 2 soon follows on with the coming of age of Rome’s first Emperor Octavian Caesar and his struggle with Marc Anthony. I loved this programme and was gutted when news was leaked of the set burning down thus halting a chance of a 3rd season, however supposedly a film is on its way.

Red Dwarf Red Dwarf tells the story Dave Lister (Craig Charles), the last man alive after a radiation leak on the mining ship Red Dwarf whilst he is in status resulting him being stranded 3 million years from home. However he is accompanied by a hologram of his bunk mate (Rimmer), a life form that evolved from his cat (Cat), a human like service robot (Kryten) and the ships main computer (Holly). As they travel homebound they encounter various humorous adventures however it’s the hilarity of the relationships between the characters that make this show. To be honest you’d be a right ‘smeghead’ not to give it a shot.

Stargate SG-1 For my money, Stargate SG-1 is one of the greatest sci-fi TV shows made. The concept behind it is genius, using an ancient Egyptian background to create a programme that grips you as the plot and characters develop. It’s quite easy to explain the plot, the Stargate is basically a doorway to new worlds, so of course in typical Sci-fi fashion a military unit is assembled and a team (SG-1) are formed that seek out new technology and races- some friendly, some hostile and the one that wants to rule the universe (the Goa’uld). There are 10 seasons however I was not a fan of the latter two. My Sky 1 got cut because of the Virgin saga halfway during season 9 which I was rather thankful of as the programme wasn’t the same without Richard Dean Anderson and the introduction of a new baddie didn’t seem logicalit should have ended with the death of Anubis!

SCIENCE Tectonics and Tsunami’s “Civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice. William James Durant (1885-1981) The words of the American philosopher, William Durant are particularly pertinent at the moment in light of the disaster that has recently struck Honshu, the largest island of Japan. On March 11th at 14.46 local time (05.46 GMT) an earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter Scale occurred approximately 55 miles off the eastern shore of Minami Sanriku, one of the closest towns in Honshu. The quake was the largest recorded in Japan since records began over 140 years ago, and the 7th largest earthquake ever recorded according to the US Geological Survey, with its effects felt over 250 miles away in Tokyo. The ensuing tsunami, a 30ft wall of water, devastated much of the eastern seaboard, and reached as far as 6 miles inland. Aftershocks, some as high as 6.8 in magnitude, persisted during the days following the initial quake and have greatly hindered rescue efforts. There has also been inquisition into the use of satellite imaging which some claim can highlight the bulges in plates prior to earthquakes. However, as humans, we have a tendency to search for reason and pattern in events, in the eventual hope that we may exert form of control over them. Dr. Geraint Owen of the Swansea Geography Department, and lecturer on the topic of geological events, said that these events are most likely occurring at random, and that the nature of randomness is that occasionally clusters of disasters will occur together.

Seismology Japan is one of the most seismically unstable places in the world and has experienced over 150 recorded tsunamis in the last century. The word Tsunami itself is of Japanese origin, coming from the word ‘Tsu’ Z # [ :^ , Z [ ) ' $ on July 12th, 1993, off the west coast of the northern island of Hokkaido. The wave, which reached shore within 5 minutes and varied between 30 and 90ft in height, claimed almost 200 lives. Land-based earthquakes also occur relatively often in Japan. 16 years ago, on January 17th, 1995, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake caused over 5,000 deaths and ÂŁ100 billion worth of damage in the south-central Kobe region. The high incidence rate of tectonic activity in Japan is due to the proximity of the islands to tectonic plate boundaries – the meeting points of Earth’s outermost mosaic of rock segments. Japan lies in an area of high

This sudden shift is referred to as ‘thrust faulting’, and releases a huge amount of energy, vertically displacing vast quantities of water. Since 1973 there have been 9 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or over occurring at the Japan Trench, however until the most recent quake, nothing over 7.8 was recorded. Tsunamis are usually a series of waves which hit land in succession, rather than one single wave as is often believed. They can be illustrated similar to the peaks and troughs sound waves, with a wave’s height (amplitude) depicting the water level. The initial displacement of water in tsunamis occurs in deep water, but the low amplitude – usually only a metre or so – and long wavelength (distance between the highest $ % [ % $ $$ ) primary, shallow waves often travel at up to 500mph – the same as the cruising speed of a Boeing 747. However, the speed that waves travel at, the short time between seismic activity and tsunami landfall, and the low detectability of waves in deep water means that a prediction allowing effective evacuation of susceptible areas is almost impossible in cases where the epicentre is near land. Simmo Says... I’m not going to lie to you all Waterfront readers, this one is a little rushed. You may or may not be aware, but not only am I bigging it up Will Smith Biggy style in SSE (Basically Jamie Tagg is my number 2), but I’ve taken up a job working for the elegant Mr Gary ‘Big-G’ Lulham at Sin City. Now, the first time I stepped into Sin City in the fine year of 2007, I agreed that if I could be 11 pints deep and still be able to smell that floor and worry about those peculiar drips landing on my head, then there was no way I could go there sober, especially have to serve behind that ever busy bar. HOWEVER, its taken me in like a face to a sweet pair of blouse balloons. It’s all about the countless times someone asks you for a ‘Double Red Bull & Coke’ or spends twenty minutes pulling out more 20p’s into their hand than pubes I’ve pulled off my sack. And can I please get something off my chest....THERES NO SUCH THING AS ‘SO-CO’!!! I’ll list the reasons why; 1) Calling it SO-CO makes you sound like a prick 2) Calling it SO-CO makes you sound like a prick and 3) Calling it SO-CO makes you sound like a prick and I will pour you a Pernod instead. How much of a legend was Roy Walker last Monday?? I had the pure pleasure of looking after the old boy for the night and he really is a true graduate of lad academy. After being on stage, he was first to comment on the ‘lovelies’ out in Oceana that night. On the walk home he told me a few stories that I know The Waterfront and many other newspapers would love to hear, but thats just between me and the big man. All I can say is, I’ll never look at Paul Daniels or a spatula the same way again. Varsity is Wednesday and I for one have a had a boner for this since last year. Drinking from 9am, shouting abuse at people all day, watching ginger people run around with their crotch dangler out and then pass out in a corner with your hand on your curry covered bits...The only difference between Varsity & Christmas is Varsity has a shed load of sports in the middle for you to feast your eyes on. My favourite Varsity recollection has to be from the 2009 era, when one of my housemates, who was slurring his words more than Louie Spence before we’d even got to Cardiff, went to the bar at half time to get the round in. By the end of the game, we were dry-mouthed and wondering where our mate had ended up. After a brief 20 second phone call, we found he had woken up on a train in Pembrokeshire, complete with pint tray and pint cups in hand. So dig out your green & white, make yourself an amusing banner...’ We took a sh*t on Fowlers mum’ (Fowler being the Cardiff Uni head coach), join us at Uplands Diner where appropriately they have a license to serve beers and open at 8am and get on the green & white wagon to take over Cardiff. Simmo Says....Cardiff Girls, Make More Noise, When They’re Shagging Swansea Boys!!!

RAngharad’s Round-up Throw on your t-shirts and bust out the air horns – Varsity is here! That’s right, it’s time to get all green and white and scream abuse at a load of people you don’t know, because that is effectively what we and the entire University did last year. All in good competitive spirit of course! ? U <$ was pretty spectacular. We’re not into sport, so it was a last minute decision. We missed out on the t-shirts and the after party tickets – this was a mistake which we vowed (over a pint) never to make again. To be perfectly honest, we couldn’t face the absurd queuing. This year, our wonderful housemate got up at the crack of dawn #

% = $ up. Swansea’s dedication to supporting our teams/getting wasted is incredible. You can’t help but get caught up in the Swansea University spirit, last year the atmosphere for the whole day was buzzing. Despite our serious lack of sporting knowledge, we often found ourselves screaming abuse at the referee and pretending that we knew what was going on. Granted,

Not being ones to miss out on this, we got fully involved. We can’t quite remember when the buses left for the big rugby match, but we do # # U $ $ % <

Sorry. Once we got to the stadium, we spent the build up to the match going on fair rides, drinking a lot more cider, getting covered in green face paint and spanking various musicians (don’t ask). After joining a million different queues and our feeble attempts to smuggle alcohol in were thwarted, we took our seats and watched some serious rugby. And streakers. Never have we seen so many bums in such a short amount of time! Student matches simply aren’t complete without nakedness. If there isn’t any this year, we will cry. Of course this year will be different, as we’re all piling onto trains and are heading to Cardiff. Make sure you slap on some green and scream your support to your heart’s content. When we put our minds to it, we can do anything. After all, we’re the lot that are bringing Miami to Oceana!

Well, the season has drawn to a close, with 120 matches being played and 636 goals scored and I think we can agree that the season has not disappointed. The Uni 6ths clinched the title on the last day by beating fellow title contenders Sketty Bolognese 2-1. Going into the game the teams were two points apart but The Uni 6ths managed to overcome Sketty and moved one point above them. The 6ths only lost one game in the whole season succumbing to Ajax 3-1, but despite losing the league, Ajax claimed the SSE cup beating the Uni 7ths 5-2 AET. VARSITY 2011: THE WAIT IS OVER By Chris Penn Deputy Sports Editor sport@waterfrontonline.co.uk

THE EVENT that everyone has been talking about is here. This year Varsity celebrates its 15th Anniversary and promises to be bigger

$ of the Millennium Stadium chosen to hold the rugby showdown. Swansea are looking for back to back victories after their 16-12 victory last season and what better place to do than the nation’s rugby temple. Ask any student who’s done it before and they will say that it is the one of the greatest days of the year. Ignoring the drinking aspect of the event, what makes it special is to see the whole universitywhether it be AU members, media services or academic students, unite together for a day that will live long in everyone’s memory. For the sports teams, the form book can be thrown out the window for whoever wants it more on the day will win it. After three years at Cardiff Arms Park, the showpiece event returned to Swansea in style at the Liberty stadium. Sketty Lane became a sea of green and

white (with a few red patches) where students showed their passion by covering themselves in paint, adorning

= +

top of their voices with the pride of their team. Now it’s over to Cardiff where 26 battles will rage on the shores of the River Taff to decide the fate of the Varsity Shield. The Welsh Institute of Sport will host most of the matches taking place that day where Swansea will look to make their mark on a day that promises to live long in the memory of us all. Coaches have put their respective squads through their paces in the past week as they look to gain any advantage over there South Wales rivals. The domestic seasons for most clubs are now % glory. For some teams, a win could be the icing on the cake to a perfect season, for others this is the last chance to salvage something positive. Whenever students join sports clubs this is the day that everyone wants to be part off. This drive is encapsulated

RED VERSUS GREEN: The battle lines have been drawn ahead of the showpiece event this coming Wednesday in the introduction of the Intramural Football match which allows players who are not overly gifted in football talent to represent their university in the biggest sporting event of the year and most likely of their lives. Credit must go to the Swansea Athletics

Union who have worked hard to arrange a great day out from travel arrangements to the after-party at Odyssey Nightclub afterwards. Wednesday promises to be massive and The Waterfront wishes the best of luck to all those competing, and that

all students travelling to Cardiff have a great time and stay safe. Cardiff better prepare for the invasion of the GREEN AND WHITE ARMY!!!

FARCE-ITY: AMERICAN FOOTBALL KO’D By Chris Penn Deputy Sports Editor sport@waterfrontonline.co.uk VARSITY is famed for its drama, however the American Football team weren’t expecting any six days before kick-off. David Keyse, a coach for the team, told The Waterfront that their Varsity showdown has been cancelled due

congestion. On Sunday the Cardiff Cobras played in the league playoffs against the Exeter Demons, with the possibility of a further match the following Sunday if they were to win. Cardiff could therefore potentially play three times in the space of a week including the match scheduled for this Wednesday. “They (Cardiff Cobras) wanted to

move the match to the Sunday before their play-off match. “We wanted to stick to tradition and play that match on the day of Varsity. This resulted in Cardiff supposedly refusing to play the match against the Swansea Titans if they beat Exeter. Cardiff’s Athletic Union President Jack Perkins assured the Titans that this would not be the case suggesting that Cobra’s may look at the possibility of Keyse admitted, “At the end of the day, it’s not my problem if they want to to play the match. When it seemed that all was sorted this sitcom took yet another twist as Swansea’s Athletics Union was told by

their Cardiff counterparts that the match was now off. Salt was further rubbed into the Titan’s wounds by the match will now be voided instead of Swansea given the win because of the Cobras forfeit. “We know that Siwan (Swansea AU president) is still in talks over the future of this match, and is fuming. “I am highly disappointed that this match has been voided with no consequence to Cardiff for pulling out. “The lads are gutted as they were really psyched up for this match. The Swansea Titans have had a good season which included a 26-25 over the Cobras in the league. “I think the win we got over them has option. “Last year’s defeat hurt the team a lot and we were relishing the test of putting the record straight.
