The Watermill Theatre Spring/Summer Season 2018

Welcome to The Watermill We then turn our attention to Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s raucous restoration comedy The Rivals, directed by Jonathan Humphreys, in a bracing new adaptation to be presented in the round.

Burke and Hare follows, and is a dark comedy set in Victorian Edinburgh about the infamous duo. It will go on tour locally before a two week run at The Watermill.

Next in our programme, following on from our recent productions of Romeo +Juliet and Twelfth Night, we return to Shakespeare with our company of actors, the Watermill Ensemble, who will produce a brand new version of Shakespeare’s great theatrical celebration, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The final main house production of the season is Jez Butterworth’s epic masterpiece Jerusalem in its first UK revival since it took the West End and Broadway by storm. To see this play in such an intimate rural setting is going to be an unmissable experience.

Welcome to the first half of our 2018 season.

I’m delighted that the season will also include a new piece by our playwright in residence Danielle Pearson; Digging for Victory will be performed by our Senior Youth Theatre. We have live music from the Basin Street Brawlers, comedy music by Bounder and Cad and a magical show for young audiences called Sidney’s Shed.

It comes fast on the heels of a very successful 50th anniversary year in 2017. Last year, our work reached over 65,000 people and the support for the theatre has been overwhelming.

We launch the new season with Teddy, a music theatre piece which tells the story of the rise and fall of teddy boys in 1950s London with a live rock ‘n’ roll band. It reunites many of the team from our hit 2016 production of Frankenstein and will open at The Watermill before touring the UK and transferring to London.

But when their fellow Land Girl Mabel goes missing, leaving behind only a series of coded clues, it’s clear that all is not as it seems in the sleepy village of Witherington. Led by Joyce, with her insatiable appetite for mystery novels, the sisters vow to dig for the truth. But can they solve the code in time? And as they investigate the inhabitants of Nott’s Farm, what secrets of their own will be brought to light?

1956: The Beauregard Private Hotel near Bournemouth is a hotbed of repressed emotions and middle-class Englishness.

Each of the staff and residents has their own reasons for seeking the solace of a quiet life, but hiding away from a growing wave of cultural change proves to be impossible.

Things can’t go on as they were and nothing will ever be the same again.

Today: 50 years on from the decriminalisation of homosexuality, this alternative version of Rattigan’s gently subversive two act drama (written by him for its American premiere) observes the challenges to the status quo of the changes in post-war British culture and puts a spotlight on the treatment of ‘difference’ within our society.

Basin Street Brawlers The ensemble is led by trumpet player and singer Peter Horsfall from Kansas Smitty’s Big Four, who played at The Watermill in February 2017.

This band of master musicians swing and stomp their way through the most beautiful melodies and raucous rags of the 1920s and 1930s ‘with all the energy and assurance of a bunch of Kansas City veterans’ (The Sunday Times). Their debut record ‘It’s Tight Like That’ has garnered critical acclaim, with reviews describing them as ‘world class’ (BBC).

The Basin Street Brawlers have headlined the London Swing Festival and regularly perform at the UK’s most prestigious jazz and chamber music venues, including Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, the Pizza Express Jazz Club and the Holywell Music Room.

Send your script to us and we will read and respond with constructive criticism and advice as part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing new writing talent. The fee for submissions is £33 per play (to cover reader’s fees).

Our bespoke arts-based training programme is flexible and highly cost effective. We offer dynamic training in communication and presentation skills, as well as unique team building activities.

Getting Around

When you book your seats, please tell us about any special requirements you have. Almost everywhere is wheelchair-accessible. However, please note circle seats are on the first floor, accessed by a spiral staircase. There is no lift, so if you need to be seated in the stalls, please let our box office staff know when you book. Subject to availability we can welcome two wheelchair users to every performance in the stalls. We also have our own wheelchair available on request.

Guests with mobility concerns can reserve one of our accessible parking spaces, nearest the theatre entrance. Please call the box office to reserve a space.

Hearing impaired and Deaf audiences

Our infrared Sennheiser hearing system amplifies the on-stage sound for those using a personal headset that works with or without a hearing aid. If this would be helpful, please let us know when booking so we can reserve a free headset or loop for you.

British Sign Language performances are sign integrated. This means that the sign performer is on stage translating alongside the actors. Look out for the BSL symbol on show information pages.

Visually impaired audiences

Audio Description paints a picture of what is happening on stage for audience members who are blind or partially sighted. The audio describer uses the natural pauses in the action to deliver a live narration to the listener’s personal headset. Before every AD performance at The Watermill, a free Touch Tour gives guests the chance to explore the production’s set, costumes and props. Look out for the symbols displayed on the show information pages.

Audiences with autism, dementia and learning disabilities

Relaxed Performances are designed to welcome audience members with sensory sensitivities or anyone who might find it challenging to be in a conventional theatre environment. Backstage Tours The price includes a tour, one course meal with coffee and a ticket for that day’s matinée performance.

If you’re interested in what goes on behind the scenes at The Watermill, you might like to combine your visit to see a matinée performance with a backstage tour followed by lunch. You’ll get to meet the staff, see where the actors rehearse and visit the old and new buildings that make up The Watermill.

Booking is open to individuals and groups.

By becoming a Friend of The Watermill Theatre your support goes to the heart of what we do - create exciting and memorable theatre for all to enjoy. Your donation will also help us to deliver an inspirational outreach programme to those in our local community.

Hosted by the Friends, an opportunity to meet the cast after the evening performance.

Throughout the year, the Friends Committee, run by a dedicated group of volunteers, organise a range of activities and events including a series of Lunchtime Talks and Supper Clubs with keynote speakers, Walks with Talks, fairs, Meet the Cast evenings, workshops and much more. Events are open to all, with Friends receiving priority booking.

The Friends of The Watermill make an impressive financial contribution to the theatre, a registered charity. Last year, they generated over £80,000 from donations and organised events, which included summer and Christmas fairs as well as two antiques fairs, numerous talks and lunches with speakers who included Rageh Omaar, Lady Carnarvon and the directors of House and Garden and A Little Night Music.

The Watermill Summer Fair Sunday 3 June from 12 noon to 4pm Come and share the beautiful surroundings of The Watermill Theatre whilst enjoying all the fun of our annual Summer Fair. There’s plenty to entertain the whole family with live music, stalls, games, delicious food, a Pimm’s bar, an exciting raffle and a chance to back a winner in the duck race which takes place under the weeping willow tree on the crystal clear waters of the River Lambourn.

Price Adults £1, 12 years and under FREE. No pre-booking is required.

Opening Times - 10am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Bank Holidays: 12 noon until 6pm (6.30pm if there is an evening show). Non-performance days: 10am to 6pm.

There is no booking fee. We do not currently provide e-tickets but you will receive email confirmation of your booking.

From the M4, junction 13 or A34, turn off at the junction signposted Newbury, Hungerford (Donnington, Speen) and take the first exit at the roundabout. If travelling from the south, go straight over the second roundabout. Turn left at The Hare and Hounds public house (brown sign post for The Watermill Theatre), turn left at the end of the road and next right into the village of Bagnor and left at the sign for The Watermill.

By bus Kennections, service 4, runs Monday to Saturday from Newbury bus station to The Hare and Hounds, Station Road, Speen, approximately 20 minutes walk to The Watermill. The last bus leaves Newbury Bus Station at 17.45 and arrives at 17.55. The last bus to central Newbury leaves Station Road at 18.55. Please check the times before travelling.

By train An hour from London Paddington to Newbury station. Taxi rank at Newbury station.

How to Pay

Car and bike parking

Tickets can be paid for by credit or debit card, or they can be reserved for up to three days while you send us a cheque or gift vouchers. We can post your tickets to you for a charge of £1.30 (postage and administration) or you can collect your tickets from the box office up to 30 minutes prior to the performance. Cheques should be made payable to The Watermill Theatre Ltd. Please check your tickets carefully upon receipt to ensure you have the right number, performance date and time.

Please be aware that car parking space is limited. Please car-share whenever possible and help reduce the impact on the environment too. There is a bicycle rack alongside the restaurant.

Exchanging tickets

All tickets are non-refundable. However, we are happy to exchange tickets for another performance of the same production, subject to availability, up to 48 hours before the performance. We charge £2.50 per ticket plus £1.30 postage and administration.

Reselling tickets

We will try to resell your tickets (after all other tickets have been sold) and will credit your Watermill account which will be valid for one year. We charge £2.50 per transaction. For ticket exchanges and resales, you must return your original tickets to the box office by return of post. We do not update you on the progress of resales, but please call the box office if you need an update on whether your tickets have sold.

Upgrading tickets

Within 48 hours of the show, if you wish to upgrade your tickets, you will need to purchase the new ones and offer your old ones for resale. Original tickets will need to be returned to the box office.

Gift vouchers

Watermill vouchers can be purchased from the box office and online and can be used to buy tickets only. Vouchers are valid for one year only. We are unable to accept expired vouchers.

Gift vouchers are non-refundable.
