The Watermill Theatre Spring/Summer Season 2018

Welcome to The Watermill We then turn our attention to Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s raucous restoration comedy The Rivals, directed by Jonathan Humphreys, in a bracing new adaptation to be presented in the round. Burke and Hare follows, and is a dark comedy set in Victorian Edinburgh about the infamous duo. It will go on tour locally before a two week run at The Watermill.

Next in our programme, following on from our recent productions of Romeo +Juliet and Twelfth Night, we return to Shakespeare with our company of actors, the Watermill Ensemble, who will produce a brand new version of Shakespeare’s great theatrical celebration, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The final main house production of the season is Jez Butterworth’s epic masterpiece Jerusalem in its first UK revival since it took the West End and Broadway by storm. To see this play in such an intimate rural setting is going to be an unmissable experience.

Welcome to the first half of our 2018 season.

I’m delighted that the season will also include a new piece by our playwright in residence Danielle Pearson; Digging for Victory will be performed by our Senior Youth Theatre. We have live music from the Basin Street Brawlers, comedy music by Bounder and Cad and a magical show for young audiences called Sidney’s Shed.

It comes fast on the heels of a very successful 50th anniversary year in 2017. Last year, our work reached over 65,000 people and the support for the theatre has been overwhelming. We launch the new season with Teddy, a music theatre piece which tells the story of the rise and fall of teddy boys in 1950s London with a live rock ‘n’ roll band. It reunites many of the team from our hit 2016 production of Frankenstein and will open at The Watermill before touring the UK and transferring to London.

We look forward to welcoming you very soon. Paul Hart Artistic and Executive Director

Burke AND HARE A new version by Tom Wentworth Originally created by Jenny Wren Productions

1828, Edinburgh.

Directed by Abigail Pickard Price Designed by Toots Butcher

Two Williams, William Burke and William Hare, discover a money making scheme far more lucrative than hosting lodgers. The first rule of business? Supply and demand. In the leading city for medical research, there’s a huge demand for bodies and an inconveniently low number of deaths. The profitable solution? Murder, of course.

The Sackler Trust, Principal Supporter of Watermill Rural Touring

As the infamous pair flourish in their new found careers, the more they murder, the less they care but for how long will they get away with it? In a new black comedy that is as hysterical as it is historical, three actors tell the true story of the prolific duo.

Tickets Monday to Thursday evenings, Thursday and Saturday matinées: £18, £16 and £15.50. Friday and Saturday evenings: £20, £18 and £17.50.

Burke and Hare is also touring to village halls, rural venues and arts centres. For a list of venues visit watermill.org.uk or call the box office.

Jerusalem By Jez Butterworth England’s green and pleasant land.

Directed by Lisa Blair

St George’s Day. It’s the day of the Flintlock Fair and the day Kennet and Avon Council want to see the back of Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron for good. The new estate want the maverick local boy evicted, but Johnny has other plans.

‘A wonderful, rollicking, dark comedy about contemporary life in rural England’ Financial Times ‘Fantastic, shocking and fresh’ Daily Mail Jerusalem in the West End, 2011.

At his ramshackle caravan kingdom, the charismatic hellraiser entertains his band of ‘undesirable’ scallywags with outlandish tales, unbelievable antics and an ample supply of booze and drugs. Infamous for holding the most riotous parties this side of the Wiltshire border, Johnny is a hero to many but a villain to others. Pursued by the authorities, threatened by the local thug and reprimanded by his ex, Johnny is not a man to be beaten down.

This production contains especially strong language throughout. Age guidance 16 and upwards. Parental discretion advised. Interpreted Performance Saturday 30 June at 1pm.

Saturday 30 June at 2.30pm.

Tickets Monday evenings, Thursday and Saturday matinées: £16.50 and £15. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings: £25, £23, £15. Friday and Saturday evenings: £26.50, £24.50, £16.50.

Inciting his own special brew of anarchy, Johnny fights against the hypocrisy of modern suburban life and embodies the spirit of England’s legendary giants of myth. A raucous, earthy contemporary classic, Jerusalem paints a rebellious alternative vision of the idyllic English countryside.

First Week Special On the first Thursday and Friday seats are £16.50 and £15 (no other discounts apply).

Following enormous success in the West End and Broadway, Jez Butterworth’s startling, multi award-winning play is brought to life in its first major revival since its London premiere. 12

Separate Tables

By Danielle Pearson

By Terence Rattigan Directed by G. Wallace

Directed by Heidi Bird When sisters Joyce, Beryl and Vera Linnet arrive at Nott’s Farm in Kent to join the Women’s Land Army, they hope to find some respite from the danger and chaos of wartime London. But when their fellow Land Girl Mabel goes missing, leaving behind only a series of coded clues, it’s clear that all is not as it seems in the sleepy village of Witherington. Led by Joyce, with her insatiable appetite for mystery novels, the sisters vow to dig for the truth. But can they solve the code in time? And as they investigate the inhabitants of Nott’s Farm, what secrets of their own will be brought to light?

1956: The Beauregard Private Hotel near Bournemouth is a hotbed of repressed emotions and middle-class Englishness. Each of the staff and residents has their own reasons for seeking the solace of a quiet life, but hiding away from a growing wave of cultural change proves to be impossible. Things can’t go on as they were and nothing will ever be the same again. Today: 50 years on from the decriminalisation of homosexuality, this alternative version of Rattigan’s gently subversive two act drama (written by him for its American premiere) observes the challenges to the status quo of the changes in post-war British culture and puts a spotlight on the treatment of ‘difference’ within our society.

Bounder & Cad

Sunday Sessions

Basin Street Brawlers The ensemble is led by trumpet player and singer Peter Horsfall from Kansas Smitty’s Big Four, who played at The Watermill in February 2017.

This band of master musicians swing and stomp their way through the most beautiful melodies and raucous rags of the 1920s and 1930s ‘with all the energy and assurance of a bunch of Kansas City veterans’ (The Sunday Times). Their debut record ‘It’s Tight Like That’ has garnered critical acclaim, with reviews describing them as ‘world class’ (BBC).

The Basin Street Brawlers have headlined the London Swing Festival and regularly perform at the UK’s most prestigious jazz and chamber music venues, including Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, the Pizza Express Jazz Club and the Holywell Music Room.

Their repertoire features the finest work of the master songwriters of the era, including Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael and George Gershwin, delivered in a unique and powerful style.

You are invited to join the songster scoundrels for a unique cocktail of piquant parodies, tall tales, party games and hot new numbers in their critically acclaimed show. Not to be missed. ‘Kit & the Widow, Fascinating Aida… Every generation needs an original, stylish and witty cabaret act. Behold the next: Bounder & Cad.’ Gyles Brandreth

They have entertained princes, princesses, and Tim Henman... and now they’re coming to The Watermill! Backed by a sizzling jazz trio of piano, bass and drums, the raffish duo’s ‘laser-sharp’ lyrics lampoon everything from Brexit to the Bake Off, and everyone from the Royals to the Kardashians.

As a registered charity, a significant percentage of our income is earned through ticket and restaurant sales but for the remainder, we rely on the generosity of people like you to help keep this wonderful theatre running.

Your gift, helping us to inspire young people.
