The Watermill Theatre

A NEW SEASON

Spring/Summer 2016

Welcome to The Watermill

Priority Friends’ opens Booking ember. 2 Nov Monday booking General onday 9 opens M er. Novemb Hello! I’m thrilled to be announcing my inaugural season for The Watermill Theatre. It’s a huge privilege to be the new Artistic and Executive Director at this beautiful theatre which boasts such an extraordinary history of theatrical adventures. I can’t wait to work with the dedicated team here and to create great theatre for you - our incredible audience. I’m keen to bring real scope in my programming and I hope that shines through in my first season. To kick things off, I’ll be directing Shakespeare’s immortal tale of Romeo + Juliet in a bold and raucous staging with an astonishing new company of actors. This will be followed by Alan Bennett’s brilliant double-bill Untold Stories - wittily observed recollections of his childhood, performed alongside live music. We will also be bringing a striking new version of a classic novel to our stage with Rona Munro’s adaptation of Watership Down - a story with an indelible link to this part of the world; as pertinent now as it ever could be.

Alongside this I’m delighted to be welcoming Box Theatre Company to perform Edward Bond’s comic masterpiece The Sea. Our Senior Youth Theatre will be performing a new adaptation of the family classic - The Railway Children. We’ll also be presenting One Million Tiny Plays About Britain a series of hilarious, overheard conversations originally published in The Guardian, as our rural tour and here at The Watermill for a limited run. On top of this, you will find a range of fun and insightful events with our children’s show, live music and talks. It’s the beginning of a new era at The Watermill and we look forward to welcoming you soon. Paul Hart Artistic and Executive Director

One Million Tiny Plays About Britain By Craig Taylor

Directed by Laura Keefe

Overheard conversations from across the length and breadth of the country form Craig Taylor’s humorous and poignant look at modern Britain in One Million Tiny Plays About Britain.

‘Well, answer your own question. I did 1,800 miles in the caravan and drank three gallons of cider. So I’ll ask you whether or not it was a good weekend.’

Laugh-out-loud funny, and sometimes heartbreakingly moving, these miniature insights into other people’s lives reveal the triumphs, disasters, horrors and joys of life in the twenty-first century.

One Million Tiny Plays About Britain is touring to village halls, rural venues and arts centres. For a list of venues visit watermill.org.uk or call the box office.

Originally published in The Guardian, this collage of scenes now form a hugely entertaining and addictive evening in the theatre. It will change the way you listen to the world around you, and train journeys will never be the same again.

Watermill outreach touring is generously supported by The Dr. Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation. Tickets Monday to Thursday evenings, Thursday and Saturday matinées: £18, £16, £15.50. Friday and Saturday evenings: £20, £18, £17.50.

‘One Million Tiny Plays About Britain reads like a digest of the nation’s soaps, with a little bit of Alan Bennett and The Vicar of Dibley thrown in’.

Untold Stories Hymn & Cocktail Sticks Two Recollections By Alan Bennett

‘…pushed into a far corner behind a dog-eared packet of desiccated coconut, I come across a little cylinder in clear plastic that is still clean and is quite new.

Warm, witty and poignant, Untold Stories is a double bill of memoirs from one of the nation’s most successful yet self-effacing playwrights, whose work for the stage includes The History Boys and The Madness of King George.

It is a tube of cocktail sticks.’

In Hymn, a play set to live music by George Fenton, Bennett recalls the hymns and music that underscored his childhood and, with great affection, his father, a violin playing butcher. Glimpses of his early life with Mam and Dad are shared in Cocktail Sticks. Mam seeks enlightenment from the pages of Woman’s Own, and Dad, who in an effort to earn a few extra bob, upgrades to a double bass, is thwarted when it won’t fit through the doors of the tram.

Tickets Monday evenings, Thursday and Saturday matinées: £15.50 and £15. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings: £24, £22, £15. Friday and Saturday evenings: £26.50, £24.50, £16.50.

Humorous and touching, Untold Stories, the recollections of the multi-award winning playwright, was a recent hit at the National Theatre and in the West End.

First Week Special On the first Thursday and Friday seats are £15.50 and £15 (no other discounts apply). See pages 33-35 for Performance Diary. watermill.org.uk BOX OFFICE 01635 46044

Support Your Theatre! The Watermill Theatre produces all of its main house shows and for each production, we assemble a new cast and creative team who live on site throughout the rehearsal and performance period, becoming part of The Watermill family. Our shows really are made in West Berkshire! However, our work goes far beyond the shows performed on stage. We are deeply committed to providing a range of opportunities for schools, the local community and anyone who wants to creatively engage with us. It costs in the region of £3 million to produce our shows, run the theatre and education programme. A significant percentage of our income is earned through ticket and restaurant sales but this doesn’t cover all the work that we do, and the work we would like to do. It is therefore crucial that we continue to fundraise each year. Every pound we receive helps us to achieve the ambitions we have for providing exceptional theatre for all to enjoy. Our sincere thanks go to the following people and organisations whose generosity helps our artistic vision become a reality.
