Welcome to The Watermill
We are delighted to have been shortlisted for a second year for the My Theatre Matters! UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre Award. We are hugely grateful to everyone who voted for us. For this little theatre to get into the shortlist of five when up against 256 theatres from all around the country demonstrates just how much people care about The Watermill. We’ve also been nominated for Theatrical Venue of the Year in the Broadway World/London West End awards and have nine nominations for Calamity Jane which played to packed houses during the summer and continues to tour the UK. It’s been quite a year! Through January and early February 2015 an exciting new project will take place to improve the heating and cooling of the theatre.

We were very fortunate to be awarded a grant by Arts Council England which enables us to improve our sustainability. The project is designed to reduce energy consumption and increase the environmental performance of the building which will make a significant reduction to our running costs and, of course, improve the experience for our audiences, actors and staff. We hope to see you at The Watermill during the coming months where you will continue to be warmly welcomed. Best wishes

The Secret Adversary
A Tommy & Tuppence Thriller Adapted by Sarah Punshon & Johann Hari Agatha Christie’s gripping thriller follows the daring and dizzying adventures of Tommy & Tuppence through 1920s London. Home from the War, flat-broke and unemployed, our twenty-something heroes embark on a daring business scheme: ‘The Young Adventurers Limited’… willing to go anywhere, willing to do anything. But their first assignment plunges them into more danger than they ever imagined and they quickly find themselves sucked into a perilous world of political intrigue, criminal conspiracy, murder and mayhem. The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase
Tickets £11.50 - £11, concessions £6.50 - £6
‘Be careful, the wolves are out tonight. And they are hungry.’
By Joan Aiken Adapted for the stage by Russ Tunney It’s 1832 and wolves roam freely around a dark and wintry England. Left alone after her parents go abroad, Bonnie and her orphaned cousin Sylvia are looking forward to spending time together in their huge, rambling home, Willoughby Chase. But the arrival of the sinister governess Miss Slighcarp and a mysterious stranger on a train leads them into a frightening series of mysteries. Who is Miss Slighcarp, and what does she want? As enemies take over Willoughby Chase, Bonnie and Sylvia must escape their clutches and solve the puzzle for themselves. The Senior Youth Theatre brings this classic adventure story to life with its trademark sense of humour and ensemble style. But be warned: this story is full of secret passages, desperate chases on frozen rivers, and wolves - lots and lots of wolves.

Thomas Hardy’s
Far From The Madding Crowd Adapted and directed by Jessica Swale When Bathsheba Everdene inherits a farm from her father, no-one expects her to take on its management herself. But our spirited young heroine will not be deterred and takes up the mantle with vigour. Yet, whilst she rises impressively to the challenges of sheep farming, it is the trials of the heart that threaten to undo her. Caught between a pair of suitors, the kind and dependable shepherd Gabriel Oak and the prosperous eligible bachelor William Boldwood, her choice seems hard enough, when the dashing Sergeant Troy appears over the horizon, with a swagger in his step and a dangerous secret in his past. Who will she choose? And will she realise the disastrous consequences of a wrong choice before tis too late? Hardy’s much loved tale is both a thrilling romance and a joyous celebration of English rural life. It is adapted by Jessica Swale who recently adapted and directed Sense and Sensibility for The Watermill.

Julie Summers Jambusters
The Second World War was the WI’s finest hour. Jambusters tells the story of the minute and idiosyncratic details of everyday life during the Second World War. Making jam, making do and mending, gathering rosehips, keeping pigs and rabbits, housing evacuees, setting up canteens for the troops, knitting, singing and campaigning for a better Britain after the war: all these activities played a crucial role in war time. Julie’s beautifully illustrated talk will bring the details of this extraordinary contribution to life. Jambusters has inspired a major new ITV Drama series, Home Fires, which will be broadcast Spring 2015. Julie says: ‘I’m avidly following the initial announcements about the drama and I’m really looking forward to seeing the characters Simon Block and the production team have created and watching the stories unfold.’ Julie describes herself as a biographer and historian but the most important thing for her is to be a story teller. Julian Lloyd Webber Widely regarded as one of the finest musicians of his generation, cellist Julian Lloyd Webber will join us to talk about his life and career in classical music. At the age of sixteen Julian won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music and he completed his studies in Geneva with the renowned cellist, Pierre Fournier. Since then he has collaborated with an extraordinary array of musicians from Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Lorin Maazel and Sir Georg Solti to Elton John and Stephane Grappelli. Julian was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Music in 1994 and - in recognition of his lifelong devotion to the music of Elgar - he was elected President of the Elgar Society in 2009. He has premiered more than sixty works for cello and he has inspired new compositions from composers as diverse as Joaquin Rodrigo and Malcolm Arnold to Philip Glass. As founder of the British Government’s In Harmony programme and the Chair of Sistema England, Julian promotes personal and community development in some of England’s most deprived areas. In 2001 Julian had the additional honour of becoming the London Underground’s first official busker! He was also the only classical musician chosen to perform at the Closing Ceremony of Olympics 2012. In April 2014 Julian received the Incorporated Society of Musician’s annual Distinguished Musician Award. In May this year, he played his final concert as a cellist having been forced to retire because of a neck injury. On breaking the news of his retirement Julian said: ‘I would like to use the knowledge I have gained through my life as a musician and an educator to give back as much as I can to the music profession which has given me so much over the years.’ Julian will be interviewed by Ralph Bernard, former Chairman and Chief Executive of Classic FM. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and you can also meet Julian afterwards in the bar.

We also run a packed outreach programme in which over 13,500 from our local community participate. Last year our work on tour was seen by a further 5,000 people.
