SUPPER CLUB Sandham Memorial Chapel Talk Alison Paton - Operations Manager (‘Custodian’) of The Sandham Memorial Chapel - and Susan Foster - Director of Fundraising for the National Trust - have generously both agreed to come and speak to the Friends about this extraordinary chapel and its history. This modest red-brick building tucked away in a quiet corner of Hampshire, was built in the 1920s to honour those who were not remembered on any official memorials. It contains an unexpected treasure - an epic series of large-scale murals by the acclaimed war artist Sir Stanley Spencer. Notably 2016 is the 125th anniversary of Stanley Spencer’s birth. Sandham has been referred to as “Britain’s answer to the Sistine Chapel”. A new community-inspired garden by Hampshire designer Daniel Lobb has also been created at the site as part of the project. Price: £21 The bar opens at 6.30pm, supper served at 7.30pm, talk at 8.30pm. If you have any special dietary requirements please call the box office. Super clubs are unreserved seating.

LUNCHTIME TALK Monday 10 October

The Wipers Times Director Caroline Leslie will explain and describe some of the “behind the scenes” activities involved in this production, exclusively to Friends of The Watermill, in the latest of our popular series of Lunchtime Talks. The Wipers Times is a stage adaptation of the award-winning BBC film by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman. It tells the extraordinary story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme, interspersed with comic sketches and spoofs from the vivid imagination of those on the front line. The production takes place one hundred years after the Battle of the Somme and publication of The Wipers Times. Price: £17.50 The bar will open at 11.30am and the talk will commence at 12 noon. A one course lunch and coffee will be served at approximately 1pm.

A Visit to Salisbury Cathedral

Lunch and Social Bridge

Following on from the most successful visit to Christ Church College, Oxford last year, the Friends of The Watermill have the opportunity to visit the historic Salisbury Cathedral.

The Friends of The Watermill warmly welcomes all bridge players, playing Chicago Bridge Format.

The Cathedral was built in just 38 years in a single architectural style, early Gothic. The spire is Britain’s tallest. It is home to the best preserved, of only four, surviving original Magna Carta (AD1215) which is listed on the UNESCO “Memory of the World” register. Tour commences at 3.30pm (meeting at the main entrance at 3.15pm). Disabled parking, limited paid parking available in The Close. Visit includes a cream tea in the Refectory and the opportunity to stay for Evensong which commences at 5.30pm

Arrive by 12 noon when a simple one course lunch will be served along with a glass of wine - or a soft drink if preferred and bridge will commence at 1pm. Tables will be provided but please bring your own bridge cloths and playing cards. Tea will be served during the afternoon and we shall finish at 4.30pm Prizes will be awarded and there will also be a raffle. Price: Tables of four must be booked and paid for in advance £65 per table for four (only £16.25 per person).

This will include the chance to see a number of pieces commissioned by the Imperial Family and in particular the brooch designed by Fabergé as an engagement present from Tsar Nicholas II to Princess Alix of Hesse. Guests will also see the brooch designed by Queen Victoria to commemorate her personal servant and devoted friend John Brown. It is engraved “Dear John” and contains a lock of his hair.

Places are strictly limited so early booking is recommended. It is suggested that the Park & Ride scheme would be preferable and there is alternative paid car parking within the town centre. The Watermill Box Office will provide further details.

The AGM is free and open to all members and starts at 7pm. There will be a curry supper after the AGM followed by a quiz circa 8pm with quiz masters Tony and Ginny Ayers and Tim and Barbara Fell, once more setting some questions to exercise your grey matter!

Wartski has had a long-standing relationship with the British Royal family, the latest expression of which was the manufacture of the Welsh gold wedding ring for the Duchess of Cambridge.

Price: £9.50 which includes supper.
