Mercury is often present during the extraction of gas and oil. Mercury contaminates installations and pipelines. Anyone in our industry who is directly or indirectly involved with Mercury-contaminated components should be aware that exposure to Mercury, even very low concentrations, can lead to complaints unnoticed. These are complaints that are often not even directly related to Mercury. Think of dull tingling fingers, rheumatic-like complaints in the joints of the hands, trembling hands and muscles, forgetfulness, depression. Some complaints are often classified under 'getting older' and 'it will pass'. When exposed to high concentrations of Mercury, the symptoms are clearer: metallic taste in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, pneumonia and even death. In the HSElife presentation and brochures on Mercury you can read more about symptoms. We must do everything we can to prevent exposure to Mercury and its release into the environment!
TIPS FROM CHARLES ODEKERKEN ABOUT DEALING WITH MERCURY Tip 1. Check if there are any Mercury-suspicious components In order to determine whether components may be contaminated with Mercury, it is helpful to use the definition in the framework. If a company has Mercury-suspicious components, there must be a 'Mercury procedure'. People who work with these components need to know how to act and what PPE’s are needed. An important part of working safely is the measurement of Mercury vapour before and during the work.

‘Mercury-suspicious components'
All components that are or have been in direct or indirect contact with the product (gas or oil) are in principle 'mercury suspect'. It’s obvious what ‘direct contact' means. ‘Indirect contact' is through contact with e.g. natural gas condensate, formation water, glycol. Containers that have contained mercurial waste, scaffolding materials, tools that have been used and even your own tools are also categorized as 'indirect contact'.
Tip 2. Mercury can occur in different form Mercury occurs as a compound and as metallic Mercury. Metallic Mercury is the most hazardous because it is volatile. From -39°C metallic Mercury is liquid and already evaporates. The limit value for Mercury vapour in ambient air is 0.02 mg/m3. That is a very low concentration! Because Mercury adheres very easily to clothing, footwear, skin, etc., there is a chance that people carry it and 'bring it with them' and are therefore continuously exposed to Mercury vapour. There are cases in which Mercury vapour was also present in employees' homes. For that matter, the limit value for domestic situations is 4

0.001 mg/m3. It is clear that contamination and circulation must be prevented at all times. Mercury also occurs frequently as Mercury sulphide (HgS). Fortunately, the risks are then low. Mercury sulphide is not volatile. But... if components containing Mercury sulphide become hot due to welding, milling, grinding, etc., Mercury sulphide can evaporate, causing dangerous Mercury vapour.
Tip 3. To measure is to know Measuring the presence of Mercury vapour is important to determine whether the situation is safe or whether, for example, respiratory protection is required. The concentration of Mercury vapour can vary due to air currents (wind, draught). If measurements show that there is no Mercury vapour present the first time, you should not conclude that there will be no exposure all day long. You really need to measure regularly. Measuring and interpreting the results must be done by people who have been trained to do so.
Tip 4. Know the situation If companies want to know whether, and if so to what extent, Mercury is present in their premises, research can be done in which analyses are carried out on surfaces (floors, tools, workbenches, commercial vehicles, scaffolding planks, etc.) as well as in the ambient air. This type of research with dozens of measurements and analyses takes only one day for an average business premises. The report provides an up-to-date description with advice. In some cases, the results were distressing and immediate measures had to be taken. One company even measured very high concentrations of Mercury on the inside of work gloves.
Tip 5. Provide sufficient knowledge If a company is working with or on components that are Mercury-suspicious, all parties involved must have the necessary knowledge. NOK-C provides the training 'Working safely with Mercury' and can be provided at your location and adapted to your situation and procedure(s). The training will take half a day and employees will get a stamp in the PSL. Many companies choose to have all employees involved follow the course. The combination with managers and executive employees provides a lot of useful interaction.

OMGAAN MET KWIK VEREIST VAKMANSCHAP! Specialist Charles Odekerken van NOK-C geeft tips over het omgaan met kwik, de risico’s en de cursus ‘Veilig werken met Kwik’.
Tijdens het winnen van gas en olie komt vaak kwik mee. Kwik besmet installaties en leidingen. Iedereen in onze branche die direct of indirect te maken heeft met kwikverontreinigde onderdelen, moet beseffen dat blootstelling aan kwik, zelfs hele lage concentraties, ongemerkt kan leiden tot klachten. Dat zijn klachten die vaak niet eens direct worden gerelateerd aan kwik. Denk aan doffe tintelende vingers, reumatiek-achtige klachten in de gewrichten van de handen, trillende handen en spieren, vergeetachtigheid, depressiviteit. Sommige klachten worden vaak geschaard onder ‘ouder worden’ en ‘het zal wel weer over gaan’. Bij blootstelling aan hoge concentraties kwik zijn de symptomen duidelijker: metalige smaak in de mond, misselijkheid, overgeven, longontsteking en zelf de dood. In de HSElife presentatie en brochures over Kwik lees je meer over symptomen. We moeten alles in het werk stellen om blootstelling aan kwik en verspreiding in het milieu te voorkomen!

Helping shape the energy transition Tjerk Suurenbroek, Business Development Manager at IRO, explains how his organisation is helping the industry shape the energy transition.
“The most important function of the IRO, the Association of Dutch Suppliers in the Upstream Oil and Gas Industry and Offshore Renewable Industry, is to connect people, companies, technologies, new ideas and innovations. This is all about crosspollination, subsidy procedures, networks and creating networking opportunities for companies to put trade promotion and exports on the map. We play a co-ordinating and guiding role in these activities. Founded in 1971, the IRO currently has more than 400 member companies. Like them, we are rooted in the offshore oil and gas industry.”
Other forms of energy Tjerk explains that the IRO started drawing attention to other forms of energy, such as offshore wind, at the beginning of this century. And even promoting them amongst its members. “That’s part of our role, too,” he declares. “In recent years we’ve seen a shift towards renewables. We also highlight particular themes, which spark members’ interest and reveal opportunities. And when we spot chances ourselves, we share them with the members to promote exports. That’s where our moves into new forms of energy come in. As they should, because of the global climate agreement concluded in 2015.”
Oil and gas remain important “Oil and gas still account for 90 per cent of global consumption and production,” Tjerk continues. “They remain incredibly important. But that importance is going to wane considerably. Along with our members, we have to move into other forms of energy. Things like offshore wind, and activities related to marine energy such as wave, tidal and OTEC [ocean thermal energy conversion]. As well as other forms of power generation from water. Our planet is 75 per cent water, and there are already numerous innovative initiatives to generate energy from it.” “Aquaculture is bringing new challenges, too. For example, how do you deal with particular underwater problems, how do you protect the environment and where can we integrate what forms of aquaculture with offshore wind farms?” “The North Sea is a source of energy we really should be doing much more with. Within the overall spectrum of the energy transition, our primary focus is the broad playing field. All the developments we are seeing today with regard to new forms of energy come from the knowledge and expertise we have gained in offshore oil and gas during the past 50 years. We are now benefiting from that.”

In our way of thinking and our approach to the problems, we are leading the way
Embracing the energy transition Tjerk points out that it is important to engage with companies and governments abroad about the energy transition in its broadest sense. “This is how we are profiling ourselves,” he says. “We want to show that we have many different ambitions. We call this ‘embracing the energy transition’. We are looking at where we come from, what the world of oil and gas has brought us, where we are now and where we want to go. In our way of thinking and our approach to the problems, we are leading the way. Just look at the development of hydrogen, the electrification of platforms, the storage of CO2 in empty gas fields… These are all still in their infancy, but we
are working hard on them. Another example is dismantling oil and gas platforms in a sustainable way, including the reuse of infrastructure, cables and pipelines. Repurposing, that is.”
Future vision
“Our vision for the future is that we work hard with the offshore and maritime industry to achieve the Paris climate goals. A lot is being done already. You can see that on various fronts, where innovations are very much on the rise. But the industry needs a clear direction in order to be able to focus its investments.”
No need to reinvent the wheel According to Tjerk, you can apply safety standards from oil and gas industry to new industries. “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel,” he claims. “In fact, it makes sense to assume that you want to use the same kind of safety standards with those other forms of energy because they are subject to exactly the same risks as oil and gas. It would be strange if you suddenly started using different standards for projects at sea. Or less stringent ones, at any rate. You see this with various parties active on both fronts: they find it quite logical that safety standards be comparable. The IRO considers this important, too, and likewise harmonisation of the rules so that everyone is using the same standards.”
Proactive The IRO is proactive in identifying new opportunities for new forms of energy. Tjerk gives an example: “Geothermal energy is a development still in its infancy, but one potentially able to help meet our demand for new energy. And it involves drilling, along with all kinds of other techniques below the earth’s surface. Things our members can do very well. So we are organising a meeting for them about geothermal energy, to show that it might be worth investigating in greater depth with a view to perhaps investing in certain projects. So we are looking at themes that are a logical extension of activities at sea, trying to identify as many things as possible to interest our members in.”

De bijna een halve eeuw geleden opgerichte vereniging IRO is een onafhankelijke non-profit organisatie die de belangen van haar 400 aangesloten bedrijven ondersteunt en behartigt. Lees hieronder hoe IRO de energietransitie mede vormgeeft.
Energietransitie helpen vormgeven Tjerk Suurenbroek is Business Development Manager bij de IRO en vertelt hoe deze organisatie de industrie helpt bij het vormgeven van de energietransitie. “De belangrijkste functie van de IRO is het verbinden van mensen, bedrijven, technologieën, nieuwe ideeën, innovaties. Het gaat om kruisbestuiving, subsidietrajecten, netwerken en netwerkgelegenheid bieden aan bedrijven om handelsbevordering en de export op de kaart te zetten. We hebben daarin een coördinerende en begeleidende rol. De IRO bestaat sinds 1971. Meer dan 400 bedrijven zijn lid van onze organisatie. We komen uit de offshore Olie- en Gasindustrie. Dat geldt ook voor onze leden.”
Andere vormen van energie Tjerk vertelt dat de IRO al begin deze eeuw is begonnen met andere vormen van energie onder de aandacht te brengen en te promoten bij de achterban, zoals offshore wind. “Dat is ook onze rol. Je ziet in de laatste jaren dat er een verschuiving plaatsvindt naar hernieuwbare energie. We brengen ook bepaalde thema’s bij hen onder de aandacht waardoor ze geïnteresseerd raken en kansen zien. Ook wij zien kansen en delen ze met onze achterban om de export te bevorderen. We zetten dus stappen naar nieuwe vormen van energie. Dat moet ook wel door het klimaatakkoord dat in 2015 wereldwijd is afgesloten.”
Olie en gas zijn nog steeds belangrijk “Negentig procent van de wereldconsumptie en de wereldproductie is nog steeds olie en gas,” zegt Tjerk. “Olie en gas zijn nog steeds ontzettend belangrijk. Maar dat gaat aanzienlijk minder worden. Wij moeten met onze achterban meebewegen naar andere vormen van energie. Denk aan offshore wind, activiteiten die met marine energy te maken hebben zoals wave, tidal, otec (ocean thermal energy conversion). En nog andere vormen van elektriciteit opwekking uit water. Onze planeet bestaat voor 75% uit water. Er zijn veel innovaties om energie op te wekken met water. Aqua cultuur brengt nieuwe uitdagingen met zich mee. Hoe ga je bijvoorbeeld om met bepaalde onderwater problemen, hoe ga je om met het milieu, waar kunnen we welke vormen van aqua cultuur in offshore windparken inbedden. De Noordzee is een bron van energie waar je eigenlijk veel meer mee zou moeten doen. Binnen het hele spectrum van energietransitie richten we ons voornamelijk op het brede speelveld. Alle ontwikkelingen die je nu ziet in de nieuwe vormen van energie komen voort uit de kennis en kunde die we opgedaan hebben in de Offshore olie en gas gedurende de laatste 50 jaar. Daar profiteren we nu van.”

De energietransitie omarmen Tjerk geeft aan dat het belangrijk is om met bedrijven en overheden in het buitenland in gesprek te zijn over de energietransitie in de breedste zin. “Daarmee profileren we ons. We willen laten zien dat we veel ambities hebben. We noemen dat ‘embracing the energy transition’. We kijken daarbij waar we vandaan komen, wat de Olie- en Gaswereld ons heeft opgeleverd, waar we nu staan en waar we naartoe willen. We lopen voorop in onze manier van denken en de aanpak van de problematiek. Kijk naar de ontwikkeling van waterstof, de elektrificatie van platforms, het opslaan van CO2 in lege gasvelden. Het staat allemaal nog in de kinderschoenen maar we zijn er wel druk mee bezig. Een ander voorbeeld is het ontmantelen van Olie- en Gasplatforms op een duurzame manier waarbij je ook kan denken aan hergebruik van infrastructuur, kabels, leidingen, nieuwe doeleinden.”
Toekomstvisie “Onze toekomstvisie is dat wij hard meewerken met de offshore & maritieme industrie aan het bereiken van de klimaatdoelen van Parijs. Er is veel gaande. Dat zie je op allerlei fronten want innovaties rijzen de pan uit. Maar de industrie heeft wel een duidelijke richting nodig om hun investeringen daarop te kunnen afstemmen.”
Het wiel niet opnieuw uitvinden Tjerk vertelt dat je de veiligheidsnormen van de Olie- en Gasindustrie kan toepassen op nieuwe industrieën. “Je hoeft het wiel niet opnieuw uit te vinden. Sterker nog het is logisch om te veronderstellen dat je eenzelfde soort veiligheidsnorm wil hanteren binnen die andere vormen van energie want daar speelt precies hetzelfde als bij de Olie- en Gasindustrie. Het zou vreemd zijn als je voor projecten op zee ineens andere veiligheidsnormen gaat hanteren. Of in ieder geval niet minder strak. Je ziet bij diverse partijen die op beide fronten actief zijn dat ze het logisch vinden dat die veiligheidsnormen vergelijkbaar zijn. De IRO onderstreept het belang ervan en ook de harmonisatie van regels zodat iedereen dezelfde normen hanteert.”
Proactief De IRO is proactief in het signaleren van nieuwe mogelijkheden van nieuwe vormen van energie. Tjerk geeft een voorbeeld: “Geothermie is een ontwikkeling die nog in de kinderschoenen staat maar die wel een bijdrage kan leveren aan onze vraag naar nieuwe energie. Geothermie heeft met boren te maken, met allerlei technieken die zich onder het aardoppervlak bevinden. Boren is natuurlijk een van de dingen die onze achterban heel goed kan en alles wat daarmee te maken heeft. We organiseren een bijeenkomst voor onze achterban over geothermie. We laten zien dat dit best wel interessant voor hen zou kunnen zijn om je daarin te verdiepen en vervolgens te kijken of je wil investeren in bepaalde projecten. We kijken naar thema’s die een logisch verlengstuk zijn van de activiteiten die op zee plaatsvinden. We proberen dus zoveel mogelijk dingen te signaleren waarbij we de achterban geïnteresseerd kunnen krijgen.”

For Brand Energy & Infrastructure Service, The WAT Group developed an environment for company-specific training modules. This resulted from the request to develop a solution for online training modules that are accessible to both its own employees and hired professionals.
"Brand has its own company-specific training courses, in addition they make use of the HSElife NL training courses. When developing the HSElife NL systems, we already took into account the possible implementation of content from organizations that may only be available and accessible to them. This also made it possible to create a portal for both Brand's own employees and the Contractors they work with, and to link this to the LARS registration system. Our system also provides a link to Brand's CMS, to which companyspecific training courses can be added," says Pier van Spronsen, Account Manager at The WAT Group.

The result is a proven system that offers convenience for employees and hired professionals as well as for management. The implementation brings great efficiency and quality improvements. "Everyone always has the right knowledge available thanks to one system. It is clear and easy to manage and use thanks to the right links with our own CMS and the HSElife NL system. ALLES IN ÉÉN SYSTEEM Zo simpel kan het zijn! Voor Brand Energy & Infrastructure Service ontwikkelde The WAT Group een omgeving voor bedrijfsspecifieke trainingsmodules. Dit kwam voort uit de vraag om een oplossing te ontwikkelen voor online trainingsmodules die toegankelijk zijn voor zowel eigen medewerkers als ingehuurde professionals. “Brand heeft zelf bedrijfsspecifieke trainingen, daarnaast maken ze gebruik van de HSElife NL trainingen. Bij het ontwikkelen van de HSElife NL systemen hielden we al rekening met mogelijke implementatie van content van organisaties die alleen voor hen beschikbaar en toegankelijk mag zijn. Dit maakte het ook mogelijk om zowel voor eigen medewerkers van Brand als voor de Contractors waarmee ze werken een portal te maken én dit te koppelen aan het registratiesysteem LARS. Ook is er vanuit ons systeem een koppeling met het CMS van Brand, waar de bedrijfsspecifieke trainingen in toegevoegd kunnen worden”, aldus Pier van Spronsen, Account Manager bij de The WAT Group.

Het resultaat is een bewezen systeem dat zowel gemak biedt voor medewerkers en ingehuurde professionals als voor het management. De implementatie brengt een grote efficiëntie- en kwaliteitsslag met zich mee. “Iedereen heeft altijd de juiste kennis paraat dankzij één systeem. Het is overzichtelijk en makkelijk te beheren én te gebruiken dankzij de juiste koppelingen met ons eigen CMS en het systeem van HSElife NL. Vanuit mijn rol als Operations Manager ben ik verantwoordelijk voor de veilige en efficiënte werking van onze offshore-installaties Hanse en De Ruyter. Net als voor alle mensen waarmee ik werk, is het mijn doel om de beste resultaten te behalen. Onze kernwaarden spelen een belangrijke rol in onze werkwijze.
