Welcome!

W

elcome to the first edition of our new on board magazine exclusively for Caribe Shuttle. It was born out of the idea that in order to provide the best service possible for our customers, we can’t stop at a van ride to get to and from various destinations. We wanted to find a way to also give you interesting and sometimes vital information for the places you are traveling to. The hope is to help you get a little more out of your trip and to create a better service for you. I thought of the name “The Wayfarer” one day after thinking and thinking what would fit our style and also convey our purpose. The meaning of “Wayfarer”, is one who travels from place to place...usually on foot. That more or less is what we do...hopefully not on foot! We are looking forward to developing a great and entertaining distraction for you while traveling with us and some useful information for you to take with you at your next destination. Welcome aboard and happy travels!

www.caribeshuttle.com The Wayfarer is the first onboard magazine for a shuttle company in the region of Central America. With over eight years of experience in the shuttle service business, Caribe Shuttle is taking a step forward and presents this new magazine to all its customers, business partners and friends, as a value information media about their destinations anservices.

Lazlo´s Catch of the Day

Here fresh fish is the star. In this genuine place the menu is what they caught during the day. Interesting, right? In fact, they are only open when they catch fresh fish, otherwise the restaurant will be closed. Its owner, a Hungarian based in this beautiful place, has been careful to choose the best ingredients to make the art of eating, a unique and memorable moment.

Bread & Chocolate Our favorite spot for breakfast has to be Bread and Chocolate! it’s a busy café found in the center of town. At peak breakfast hours you may have a short wait for a table, but it’s well worth it. Start off your day with a French press coffee and a fresh juice to go with breakfast. They also have a delicious sandwich menu for lunch, or a great option on a hot Caribbean day is the fresh gazpacho accompanied by a fresh squeezed lemonade with ginger.

And we can’t talk about Bread and Chocolate without mentioning the CHOCOLATE!!! It’s hard to decide when considering dessert, as there are so many amazing options. Their locally grown cacao is made bean-to-bar in house and then turned into their delicious desserts. Whether you choose one of their chocolate cakes, their rich brownies, or their chocolate truffles, you can’t go wrong. Whether it’s to start off your morning, or to pass by in the afternoon for something sweet, We highly recommend this place!

Pacuare Rafting Tour Exciting and fun, that’s why you have to live it! The Pacuare River is one of the best choices for your adventure treks in Costa Rica. There isn´t another tour in the country that can offer you a perfect blend of wilderness exposure and excitement, both in one day. Pacuare is world famous for its sheer beauty. A true river gorge, it is flanked by steep, green walls. Here you enjoy the feeling of total isolation from urban life and the realness of being connected with nature. You see waterfalls cascade into the river from both sides as colorful, tropical birds fly right over your head. Amazing views of this virgin tropical rainforest area. It is not an overly challenging river, but it has a lot of rapids, therefore giving you an adventure filled with lots of fun. The 18 mile one day run includes a total of 52

rapids. Few rivers in the world can offer you so many. Upon arrival to the river we will gear you up with a life jacket, a helmet and a paddle and then briefyou with a full safety orientation talk. Finally, it is time to take off down the rapids! The first 4 miles consist of fun class II-III rapids which is a perfect time to test your new river skills and gain confidence in your team. We finish in Siquirres, at our own private Exploration Center, where you can take a shower, change and enjoy the gardens and terrace while having a beer or two and reflecting with your new friends about the great adventure you just shared.

Words of a wayfarer

Puerto Viejo vs. The Classic

By: The Nicolas Corea*

V

isit the laid back, lush jungle, the black sandy beach paradise of Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica and people will tell you PV is way cooler than the postcard-style pictures of white sandy tropical islands some 100 km away crossing the border in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Come to the archipelago of Bocas del Toro and you will hear the people sing the same tune about Puerto Viejo. I have spent the better (and I mean better) part of the last 6 years based out of Bocas, making many trips throughout Central America, including at least a dozen Puerto Viejo visits. So when I was asked to inaugurate this fine Caribe Shuttle on-board publication, it was clear that it was time to get to the bottom of the famous Carribean tourist destination rivalry between Puerto Viejo and Bocas del Toro- which one is better?

18

December 2016 - 1st edition

Disclaimer: I have spent a great deal more time in Bocas, so I will admit there may be some unavoidable bias there, however; like I said, I have visited Puerto Viejo many times and I have also reached out to some long-time PV residents and people who have lived in both spots. By the way, PV stands for “Puerto Viejo” and BDT “Bocas del Toro.” Let’s begin by acknowledging their obvious shared strengths: warm, tropical, beautiful beaches, inexpensive (everything is relative), diversely populated, chuck-filled with ways to have fun and laid back as you can imagine anywhere in el Caribe. Whether you’re coming from Panama or from Costa Rica, if you’re planning on traveling to the Caribbean side, I will go ahead and invent a statistic that is nothing but an honest intuitive guess: 97.05% are visiting both PV and BDT. After checking out both,

Bocas del Toro: Caribe “Rivalry” you can’t help but notice their differences and compare. So, here it goes...

Round 1: Why is Puerto Viejo better? With my Bocas-bias and limited experience, I will offer this: beach access. While BDT has beautiful, and if not even better and more diverse beaches, you definitely have to be organized and motivated to get to those said picturesque playas. In Bocas, the best beaches are accessible only by boat, bike, automobile, rigorous hiking and/or helicopters. Not to say they aren’t worth it. But after indulging in the notorious night life that both destinations have to offer, Puerto Viejo definitely wins in the “roll out of bed at the crack of noon, find nourishment and wander across the street through the jungle and onto a worldclass beach before 1pm” category.

I really like the layout of PV: a few paved roads, luscious jungle aaaaand BOOM: playa, where Bocas Town is reminiscent of the Robert N. Marley tune “Concrete Jungle,” where the living ain’t so hard but getting to the best beaches can be challenging depending on your circumstances. 1st edition - www.caribeshuttle.com

19

Words of a wayfarer

Thorin Hanna, not only waitresses at El Ultimo Refugio (best restaurant in BDT) but also spends way more time in PV and is more qualified to weigh in: ““PV has better grocery stores and an amazing farmers market with veggies, baked goods and tinctures. Also, the government doesn’t hassle businesses about live music so there is a great music scene there which attracts well-known artists and is great for tourism.” Original Lazy Mon open-jammer and member of the Cartoon Hamburger band Dan Coole, concurs about the bit on the government and live music situation and had this to add, “There is a bit more freedom in PV. In BDT the cops hassle girls about walking around in a bikini and men getting dropped off in town after a surf with no shirt on. That would never happen in PV.” In regards to the food, Thorin maybe right about that one but BDT does boast one amazing grocery store: The Super Gourmet. I will also say that Thorin and Dan are absolutely right about the great live music in PV. The music scene in PV encourages locals and travelers alike to participate and often leads to travelers who were going to leave on Friday to stick around

Words of a wayfarer for the famous Sunday Lazy Mon Open Jam. I will give a vote to PV just for Lazy Mon. Live music sunset session on the beach in the center of town? Winning... Other fun spots that make me look forward to my PV trips: Tasty Waves and Rocking J’s. Keep up the great music and accessible beaches, PV.

Round 2: Why is Bocas del Toro better? Islands, islands, islands: think about the most stereotypical white sandy beach with a little island and just one palm tree and a coconut on the ground. Yep, BDT has got that one. While the beach access of PV is definitely convenient, the adventure of rounding up your crew and executing the perfect day excursion to an exotic, desolate beach location is part of the fun. From the massive waves of Bluff Beach to virgin paradise of Polo/Playa Larga/Punta Vieja (Bastimentos), the calmness of

22

December 2016 - 1st edition

Starfish to the uncanny postcard-ness of the national marine park of Zapatillain Bocas del Toro, you have a diverse bunch of world-class beaches. The water taxi culture is also part of the charm of Bocas. Along with the colorful wooden houses from the United Fruit era, the people’s love for music, dance and speakers. Bocatorenians love a good party. That’s why in November during Fiestas Patrias where at least 5 or so national holidays, along with Bocas Day and Bastimentos Day, are celebrated- the town pretty much shuts down for a month long party. You’ve got to love it. And come to think it- PV has the wooden house, love for music, dance and party laid-back Caribbean vibe too. After all, even though different flags are being flown, this border we are talking about is just an imaginary line and this town has a similar heritage. I love both these places. Yeah, I ‘m going to go ahead and call this a tie: Puerto Viejo and Bocas del Toro are both winners!!!

If you come to the Caribbean side of Central America and you don’t work both of these spots into your itineraryyou’re crazy. Or maybe not crazy, but you are definitely missing out. And of course you can get to both of these destinations, back and forth as many times as you want and with great ease, with Caribe Shuttle. They will get you there; everything else is up to you. Enjoy! *Editor of The Bocas Breeze

Maslow’s Hierarchy of the

Backpacker’s Needs By: Sy Murdoch

While traveling along the backpacker’s trail through Central America, one usually stumbles across a town or city that they never had expected to find and love. I had never heard of San Juan Del Sur before I booked my ticket, made a travel agenda or pondered gleefully about all the fun I was going to have.

34

December 2016 - 1st edition

S

an Juan Del Sur was the first town I came to after landing in Managua, and I am not upset my friends moved on to seek other adventure as I remained. I had plenty of adventure right there. A town which could be cross by foot in ten minutes is nestled in a classic bay with moored sail boats bordering the horizon. Most bust out their snapchat with a beer in hand and their feet in the sand as the sun sets upon the massive Christ statue that sits atop one of the mountains which act as the gates to the bay. It seems rather pictures and a clean way to shame the friends that bailed last minute on going with you. Yet the surfers return from their day of catching waves once the sun sets. The city transforms into its nocturnal form. All demographics possible for a 20-something year old traveler can be seen wandering about in their evening wear pursuing a night of good memories and new friends. The title reads Maslow’s Hierarchy of the Backpacker’s Needs because while backpacking the mandatory needs for survival change slightly from its original interpretation. San Juan Del Sur hits all of these bases from food, shelter, fun and most importantly good wifi.

1st edition - www.caribeshuttle.com

35

Words of a wayfarer Now that an introduction has been made I will be short and sweet. There is a lot to know, and a lot to do. This article will be your guide to San Juan and will help you mold your agenda so that you can have the best possible experience. Just please don't rip this page out for future reference because others will need to read this and magazines are expensive to print. Straight to the business of these modernized basic human needs first and most important: Food and alcohol. There is a wide array of culinary options in town. If you're over eating Central American food, there are several restaurants with menus that cater to most comfort foods. Dale Pues has by far the best selection of breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Covering most bases of what one would crave after a long night of hitting the town. For the hippies and food conscious connoisseurs Simon Says is an organic themed breakfast joint with a nicaraguan twist. This makes for an ideal hangover date with your recent special someone who may be in need for a proper fruit smoothie. If you are really feeling guilty about the decisions

36

December 2016 - 1st edition

you made the night before and want to shed guilt with a healthy organic “Eat Pray Love” style meal which shares the same building with a yoga studio seek out Buddha’s Garden. The fusion of Nicaraguan produce and artisanal grade menu makes for one of the healthiest meals one could have. If you like to cook your own food then the Mercado is a general local market. You can even go as far as purchasing your own grocery to cook back at the hostel if you so chose correctly (we’ll get there soon). On a grander scale there is the Pali which is your typical neighborhood grocery store. The bars in town range from your hangover tourist bar where you can party morning and night with new friends and friendly faces. Tiki bar and the Loose Moose are the best two. Within ear shot of another they fuse together into a block party until closing time. Open doors and music blaring it is the place to grab an ice cold beer or specialty cocktail. Once these close most folks either retire back to their hostel via the many shuttles from which most hostels offer or they push onward to the selection of beachside clubs. Arribas and the Howler bar are both fun to attend when their talented

DJ’s are playing. Arribas is on the beach with two levels of dance floors. However, when packed and ordering a drink such a simple task can be quite a mission. Howler has both an out back patio where one can have a quiet conversation as well as a dance floor with a daily themed events. They also have food whereas Arribas is more for fist pumping and shaking your booty. Now liquor and debauchery aside if you're like me and enjoy a good craft beer and need a break from cheap beer there’s a wonderful oasis known as the Cervesaria. I am fairly certain that when they release an IPA it will be gone in less than a few days as it is the only IPA I ever drank while down there. After telling you that I now have to tell you this: You will forever see Sunday differently. Sunday Funday is a day of events which compiles all of your college experiences into one day. It involves most of the major Hostels in town throwing a massive pool party crawl spanning across town with shuttles. For $35 you can be escorted about town with several hundred other like-minded travelers splashing in pools, smashing cocktails and dancing

to talented musicians. The excursion ends at Arribas where you pack in with over a hundred of your new friends and dance until you drop. Next topic. Lets get to where you're going to as the night ends. When on the road you sometimes find yourself wanting to “treat yourself”. Though there are plenty of fancy resorts & hotels there is an array of more affordable hostels which have private room options with A/C. Yet, among the hostels there really isn't one which can be labeled as the “best”. Each has its own qualities to bring to the table. The Surfing Donkey covers basic needs. It is affordable, has a well-maintained swimming pool, a bar and a open-toguests kitchen which has the ability to run its own restaurant, all within walking distance to everything you would want to stumble or stride towards. Hola Ola is another game changer on the north side of town. It offers a view of the bay from its crystal clear swimming pool and 300 yard distance from the beach and town. Take note that it is not advised to go on the beach at night for it is dangerous and probably the only real dangerous aspect in the

1st edition - www.caribeshuttle.com

37

Words of a wayfarer area. However, what makes Hola Ola so special other than the restaurant and bar is that it is run with a smile. They also offer a shuttle service from 9:00pm to 2:00am to town and back. You can lounge in a hammock, cocktail in hand and gaze at the sunset after a long day of surf lessons then rally up and go hit the town with ease. Both of these hostels party but maintain curfew and keep it low key. If you want to party and be wild there is the Naked Tiger and Pacha Mama Hostels. They are involved with Sunday Funday (go figure). Now that we have covered the primary two vital topics lets focus on the third: Fun. There is almost too much to do in and out of town. Whether you want to lay out and tan or surf upon

38

December 2016 - 1st edition

one of eight ideal beaches within 15 min from town or just lounge on the sandy beach downtown, beaches are everywhere. You can cheaply rent motorcycles and mopeds or 4x4’s to be your own wheels. Pick-up soccer games/volleyball tournaments on the beach are daily occurrences. There are several skateparks in town as well as yoga studios, circus schools, spanish classes and ponga boats available for rent if fishing is your thing. There is also a healthy supply of wild life to be seen. Whales, dolphins, howler monkeys and your occasional drunken aussie are seen quite prevalent. Pongas can be rented out with guides who know where these majestic critters roam. Safety is huge but I will cover it briefly

as it is not much of a concern in San Juan. The police are always patrolling, so really the only major danger is your typical pickpocket. Just don't keep your whole life in the back pocket of your swim suit. Most hostels have a secure means of storing valuables so if you're out with your card, passport and cash it’s on you if you lose it. Taxis are affordable but in case you stub your toe walking home along the uneven sidewalks the Pharmacias in the area are well equipped with band-aids and medical tape. Fourth and last is WiFi. Every location that I mentioned has WiFi. Good WiFi. And that is at times of higher value than food or shelter from what I've seen. So

take note and enjoy your time. San Juan is the best stop to make as you venture outside of Costa Rica. You will not be disappointed and will find that navigating this beautiful beach town is not only easy but memorable. Its accessibility and value as a staging point for determining the next stage of your adventure is vital because from there the country gets a whole lot bigger with the bright flashing club lights of Leon, jungle tree-houses in Granada and massive expanse of Ometepe’s volcanic views of Nicaragua’s famous lake. So have fun, go play, make friends, and take care of yourself.

Casa Oro is an institution of San Juan Del Sur, the oldest hostel and surf shop in town. Before that, it was a common place of rest for gold diggers on the 'gold route' moving up the Pacific Coast. Over the last year, they've undergone a massive transformation in pursuit of a whole new world. The space continues to be a major hub in town where you can find everything you need from real food to beds to surf lessons. Best of all, Casa Oro is a business with a big heart.

La Cervecería

Our favorite Bars

Inspired by the desire to provide craft beer to Nicaraguan people and tourists, a trio of young entrepreneurs decided to go after their dreams and turn them into a sparkling and exquisite reality. Thirsty to share their beliefs that a fine beer is best enjoyed among friends and in a special place, born long ago, La Cervecería in San Juan del Sur. With the support of great brewer masters they began to create their famous recipes. All their beers are produced on their premises. They implemented traditional methods of brewing, as well as the selection of the finest ingredients, and thus were born those deep and nuanced flavors in every batch of beer that characterizes them.

It is the first brewery of San Juan del Sur, so they have been careful to provide quality and excellence in every drop. Their beers are served in 10-ounce glasses, ice-cold, and directly from the barrel. Here, you can have a delicious craft beer and accompany it with a rich light saucer. This natural paradise shelters a great treasure, the Bosque Eterno de los Niños (Eternal Children’s Forest), the first rainforest for children internationally.

Yes! Because it is incredible to think that such a small town has so many activities to do and at the same time retains that flighty charm that invites you to stay and not want to leave this quiet and majestic place.

Monteverde is relatively small but has an innumerable menu of options for rest, adventure and relaxation.

The natural wealth that Monteverde protects is a real jewel for humanity. Not to be missed, there are about 400 species of birds in the highest part of the rainforest; More than 100 species of mammals, more than 100 species of reptiles and amphibians and over 2,500 species of plants, including a large number of orchids discovered in Costa Rican soil.

Being at the top of the Tilaran Mountain Range, you can enjoy this natural sanctuary from the heights, making canopy or watching forests through suspension bridges. There are also tours on horseback, to know the manufacture of cocoa, coffee or cheese. In Monteverde it is produced one of the best cheeses in the country. San José

Our destinations favorites

In the center of the capital By: The Wayfarer Magazine It is a city full of history. Behind was the old San José full of coffee plantations, to open the way to urban growth, although it still holds great secrets of its past and can be discovered by those who visit this city.

I

t was on October 18th, 1813 when San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica received the title of city. A decade later, in 1823, it became the capital of the State of Costa Rica. Today, the capital is a city in constant expansion, full of shopping centers, markets, museums and a night life that never stops. San Jose is a small city, but with many museums and attractions to know and admire. Among them stands the Jade Museum, which has the world’s largest collection of archeological pieces made with jade. The pieces date from the years 300 BC to 700 AD. Other pieces of preColumbian art on display are polychrome vessels and three-legged metates (used in

ancient times to grind corn), and a surprising collection of symbols related to fertility, made of ceramic. Another must stop is the National Theater of Costa Rica, an icon of Costa Rican history and the country’s main architectural jewel, which shelters an astonishing charm in every detail of its architecture, a place that promotes high level artistic production, and also preserves works of art of great value. We invite you to discover San José!
