A word from the Director www.caribeshuttle.com

Why the Wayfarer?

I

have been in Central America for 10 years now (Panama, and Costa Rica to be exact). I’ve met a lot of amazing people, been to unbelievable places, eaten at some quality restaurants and enjoyed the most exciting of tours.

I am often asked: “Why did you start this magazine?” Well to be honest, I ask myself that same question sometimes. I sure didn’t start this magazine to make money on it because I can tell you first hand that it doesn’t. Hah! And it’s a lot of work… I started this magazine to better inform our guests. Of course we intended this magazine to be something for you, the passenger on Caribe Shuttle, to read while you are sitting in our vans. However, the main purpose of The Wayfarer Magazine is to show you the hotels, restaurants, tours, etc. that we know will add enjoyment to your trip. Many of the places in this magazine are ones that you might not normally discover on your own, but we chose them based on our personal experiences. We know that these places are the best that each of our destinations has to offer. Our slogan at Caribe Shuttle is “We Take You There!” and with The Wayfarer Magazine, our goal is to be also showing you some cool places along the way. So please take the magazine with you and check out some of our favorite picks!

The Wayfarer is the first onboard magazine for a shuttle company in the region of Central America. With over ten years of experience in the shuttle service business, Caribe Shuttle is taking a step forward and presents this magazine to all its customers, business partners and friends, as a valuable information media about their destinations and services.

Bread & Chocolate

Our favorite spot for breakfast has to be Bread and Chocolate! it’s a busy café found downtown. At peak breakfast hours you may have a short wait for a table, but it’s well worth it. Start off your day with a French press coffee and a fresh juice to go with breakfast. They also have a delicious sandwich menu for lunch, or a great option on a hot Caribbean day is the fresh gazpacho accompanied by a fresh squeezed lemonade with ginger. And we can’t talk about Bread and Chocolate wi-

thout mentioning the CHOCOLATE!!! It’s hard to decide when considering dessert, as there are so many amazing options. Their locally grown cacao is made bean-to-bar in house and then turned into their delicious desserts. Whether you choose one of their chocolate cakes, their rich brownies, or their chocolate truffles, you can’t go wrong. Whether it’s to start off your morning, or to pass by in the afternoon for something sweet, we highly recommend this place!

Thin crust and Napolean-style: pizza fanatics, you will be in heaven. Seafood and pasta lovers are also in luck. We recommend the lobster spaghetti; generous portions of local fresh lobster and house-made pasta that will leave you licking the bowl. BriBri Springs Brewery Brewing beer has been a large part of my life, I first learned to brew beer at the age of 14. It is and always has been my passion. The beer industry has gone through many changes over the years and I have remained true to my dream throughout that process, to brew my own craft beer in paradise. Since 2012 I have been part of the craft beer revolution in Costa Rica. I am honored to remain a part in this country’s growth in the industry.

In addition to having the top rated craft beer in the region, our esteemed selection includes 12+ varieties of beer and cider, many of them made with local ingredients and fresh spring water, creating a one of a kind flavor, wild, local and thirst quenching. We are also home to the famous ‘Basi Salvaje’ which is inspired by the traditional Costa Rican drink ‘Agua de Sapo’.

I have gone from brewing 10 gallon batches at the hotel to building a fully operational 100% Tico brew house. I designed a two barrel, three vessel system with hot liquor tank, mash/lauter tun and brew kettle, allowing me to brew on a bigger scale. At this point in my journey, I believe I have begun to master the art of brewing a world class craft beer and I am proud of the growth of my product. What began as a two keg per batch production behind the hotel has grown into an international phenomenon that attracts beer lovers from around the world to Puerto Viejo and Kaya’s Place Hotel and Brewery!

Four years ago I started the beer festival. Every September, in conjunction with Costa Rica’s Independence Day, I invite the Independent Craft Brewers of Costa Rica to come to Puerto Viejo and celebrate the passion we share for brewing beer.

The Party Everyone is Talking About: By R. Fitzgerald

M

y Filthy Friday began in Tulum, Mexico when I asked a girl in my hostel about her t-shirt: “Filthy Friday Bocas-what is that?” Anja,23 and Swedish, was as gorgeous as she was eloquent in her 2nd language and went on to paint a picture of FF in my mind. The party she was describing seemed like a scenario out of the 1997 novel The Beach; only with less Leo, more dance music and a far better ending. I wrote off sweet Anja’stales of communal hedonism on a paradisiacal island as something that only happens to beautiful young Swedes when they travel. As I ventured south through Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, I met more and more Swedes and non-Swedes that were also fans of FF, each with a different story of Bocas island-hopping glory. I kept seeing

20

more of the same t-shirts and hearing similar fables in hostels and on barstools during my travels. I met Jorge, a Colombian medical student,in San Juan del Sur, however he didn’t look like a medical student with an anchor and the words ‘Filthy Friday’on his forehead. He explained that he had been in Bocas where girls were spraying on temporary tattoos at a party and he decided to get his on his forehead. After some days of sun, the tattoo faded but was still visible because of his suntan. Jorge described it as “the most epic party crawl by boat.” Finally, when I got to Costa Rica, it seemed like everyone I talked to in town was showing up with the same sun-bleached temporary tats and their own accounts of the famous

Tales of a Wayfarer

Friday affair from the week before in Bocas del Toro. I just had to see what all the talk was about. I got my ticket early at the FF office on Wednesday night, which was recommended because their parties have been known to sell out(sometimes over 500 people at the event!). Many others I had spoken to in Puerto Viejo had reserved their tickets on-line before arriving to Bocas. So the day came and I showed up Friday a few minutes after 12:30pm, only to barely catch the last boat from Barco Hundido. As crazy and Filthy as I would come to find this Friday party to be, punctuality and organization is something the FF folks are not lacking. I joined the boat with 9 other guests and a staff member, all of us representing various parts of the world (Canada, Panama, US, Switzerland, Israel, Argentina, Australia, Spain and Costa Rica to be exact). We boarded as perfect strangers wearing the same t-shirt, each unaware that only hours later we would be coming back in the same boat, various states of clothing, some inebriated but all feeling the shared experience of Filthy (expletive) Friday. I sat on the first boat next toone of their employees who was able to best simplify what it is that attracts visitors from all over the world to this wild weekly gathering.

22

January-December 2019 4th Edition

Nea, 25 years old from Spain, had this to say: “People that come to Bocas want to party. They want to do tours, of course, but they also want to party and meet other people. Filthy Friday is an all day party where the people can do all of those things: see the beauty of Bocas while partying and meeting other people. And she was right. Great summary, Nea-touring Bocas, partying, meeting people: Filthy Friday. And just like that our conversation was over as

O To Viej Puer

ourboat had arrived to the big show. The party itself is like a constantly evolving republic of half-clothed funloving people, which its members are constantly deciding the way to have the most fun at any given time. People join the republic alone (like me) or in tribes (either traveling together or met along the way),but all with the same mission: to make the most out of that blessed day under the Caribbean sun. Jumping

in the water, swimming, splashing, laying out the sun decks, relaxing conversations away from the action, drinking shots, playing beer pong, dance-offs, jumping around, grinding close with a new friend on the dance floor and participating in the organized races and party games; all this and more is at your fingertips at these parties. It’s organized chaos at its finest and it allows you to create as many experiences as you feel necessary. It was like all 400+ of us that day had went to bed Thursday night and declared Friday ours (and so it was). I will not, and cannot in this magazine, divulge all of the filthy details of my party experience but I am happy to give some highlights. The first party was like rolling up to that scene from“The Beach” that Anja had described only months ago in Tulum; only with a fully stocked bar, dancefloors with a DJ and fresh food being prepared. Anticipating the full day of festivities, I fueled up with a delicious cheeseburger from JJ’s Real Food and proceeded to hit the Aqua Lounge Bar for drinks. While ordering my drink, I was soon scouted for a game of beer pong (to which I obliged). My teamwon the first two games but then we lost our opponents to the dance floor when their favorite Bruno Mars song came over the sound system. We did some Uptown Funkin’ with them for a bit before we were

Tales of a Wayfarer joined with the rest of the group into a fleet boats that would take us to 2nd party. After 20+selfies on the boat with the beer pong crew, we arrived at the Blue Coconut. Starting to feel the effects of the shots and the beer pong games, I decided to check my stuff at the designated bag check-tent. This way I could fully enjoy jumping in those picturesque Caribbean waters that, from where I come from, some people only get to know from post cards. The Blue Coconut offers a surreal panoramic view of the islands and lots of space for partying. The afternoon was a perfect blur of jumping in the ocean, grabbing drinks and getting crazy on the dancefloor. The FF team comes around with complementary shots and corrals people on the dancefloor with the help of squirt guns. The DJs and MCs were all super fun and the music was on point, so the squirt gun corralling was less necessary than it was just good old fashioned fun. I was given carnival-style beads upon arriving to the 2nd bar to which I later found out exactly what they were for. Ladies were competing for the beads -and let metell you-the things some of them did for these beads are just more things I cannot disclose in this magazine,

24

so you will have to come see for yourself what that game is all about. I innocently gave mine away for correct answers to trivia questions and kisses on the cheek. The one who collects the most beads is crowned with their own special t-shirt: “Filthy F’n Legend.” Another very notable 2nd party shenanigan is the Floaty Race. The music is paused and girls representing all parts of the world are given different inflatable toys. After a count of three, they jump in the water and race to aboat about 20 meters away. The first one to reach the boat and return is the winner and receives the“Legend” tee as well. The rest of the party after the Floaty Race was a bit of a blur, but a very entertaining and successful blur, as it were. The whole group converged one last time onto the same fleet of boats

that took us back to the main island to the Barco Hundido bar. My clear memories of the day (iPhone pics) seem to fade around the same time my phone battery reached zero percent during the last party. However, the pictures on-line will tell you I was at the 3rd party and in great spirits. The best part of the evening for me: as fate would have it, I met a new “Swedish Anja with the FF t-shirt” and we lived happily ever after (until I went to Colombia and she stayed in Bocas). @New_Anja and I currently follow each other on Instagram. End. With my tales of romance and party escapades aside, would I recommend this party for you? Yes. FF and Bocas del Toro in general have something to offer everybody. I heard a lot of hype about the party on my trip and I have to admit that Filthy Friday lived up to it all my expectations and more. It was the highlight of my stay in Bocas del Toro. Visiting Bocas without going to Filthy Friday, is like going to Disney World without riding Space Mountain.

In December 2001, a young East Indian woman who grew up in Toronto, Canada came to Bocas del Toro with a dream. In September 2002, Sunanda’s dream was brought to life when she opened up OM Cafe in a little street side location with the help of her mom, who, armed with her culinary expertise and family recipes, worked tirelessly to create a diverse and delicious menu. It all starts with a 50 pound bag of onions and lots of tomatoes. Everything at OM Cafe is made from scratch the “old fashioned” way, from the masalas, to the paneer and even homemade yogurt. If you’re not in the mood for just Indian they also have an international menu which includes dishes such

as their famous Pad Thai, Red Coconut Curry and 5 Spice Fish, to name a few. OM Cafe has come a long way in its 16 years of operation. Tales of a Wayfarer

Finding Real Paradise The Plight of the Expat State of mind I’m fortunate to have lived in many places that cause friends and strangers to say “Wow man, you are living in paradise.” Sometimes (especially when I’ve been in one place for a length of time) it catches me off guard and I think to myself: Oh, right! Well then why did I have such a shitty day?

very incredible beach town has an expat that has been living there too long. They’ve gotten salty—too accustomed to being in a place others only wish they could be and taking it for granted. They’ve simply become unhappy. I don’t know if it’s the sand everywhere, the identical pictures they see visitors take daily or the constant travel advice that gets sought from them—it doesn’t matter. First world paradise problems won’t fetch you much pity from your ex-coworkers still stuck in an office cubicle, rush hour traffic or a blizzard (or all three). I wish I could tell all salty expats to go home!

Go back to where you came from and don’t come back until you’re ready to not take this place, and your life, for granted. I know because I’ve been that salty expat. It’s terrible. I’ve felt life get sucked out of me from a place that used to drive it into me. It’s like continuing to live with a girlfriend knowing you should have left months ago. (*cough* I’ll show myself the door...) I learned early on in my travels how important it is to make a timely exit from a provisional home base.

Tales of a Wayfarer

I need to pack up while things are still fresh and leave before I ruin a good thing. Just as important as finding your paradise is knowing when to leave it behind. Things change. People come and go. Vibes evolve. If I’m not changing with it, I become the grump that depresses the new tourists talking about how it used to be. The one thing that doesn’t change is the postcard picture many have in their minds of paradise: a sandy beach on a deserted island with nothing but the shade of a palm tree to keep you company. Thinking of it or just stepping foot on it, many often gasp “Oh, I could live here forever!” But could you? How long until you can’t stand the sandflies, eating rice and beans everyday or just get bored of the view? The postcard is just the physical representation of a vision of bliss. Every place has it’s downfalls and

life anywhere can eventually sink into dreadful repetition. Too many of us chase a false ideal that can only ever be a temporary state. That is why I see paradise as a state of mind, rather a place to visit—an intangible paradise. I don’t want to live in a place where I turn into a lazy, gluttonous tourist being waited on because of the dollars that brought me there. Money shouldn’t buy my happy place. Nor do I want it to. If I overwork myself to the point I’m too stressed or broke to enjoy my surroundings, it’s time to reconsider what brought me there to begin with. My utopia is a subjective state where I am living the fullest life I can, fueled by a balanced environment of creative expression, healthy diet and physical recreation in a close-knit community.

Paradise shouldn’t just be there for the taking—in my paradise, we give back. Being able to add value to the community and its environment strengthens the reason to call it paradise in the first place. If I am living in a state of paradise, I should be living the dream - my dream. That’s something you can achieve anywhere in the world. The truth is, the less I take for granted, the closer I get to the only paradise that will stay paradise. Hold the salt please.

e believe that teamwork is very beneficial to the development of the adolescent experience because it teaches kids the importance of working together as a unit, and our team provides them with financial, emotional and educational support that they wouldn’t otherwise have. The Costa Rican National Circuit tournaments are mainly on the Pacific Coast, and our team must travel for every competition. This means heavy expenses for materials, inscriptions, hotel and food costs, and transportation fees. Caribe Surf Team was founded with the hopes

of offsetting these costs for the surfers and their families. Caribe Shuttle has been our primary sponsor throughout this endeavor. Not only do they provide us with financial support, but they have provided us with transportation, materials and moral support at our tournaments. M

anuel Antonio is the jewel of the Pacific Coast. It is home to one of the top beaches in the world located within Manuel Antonio National Park, which also happens to be one of the smallest and most visited parks in Costa Rica. This is due to its varied fauna with 109 species of mammals and 184 of birds and unique and amazing trails where you can follow the hiking paths along the park. This park is just south of Quepos on the Pacific Coast, 132 km from San José. It is so popular because of its expansive white sand beaches with an evergreen forest backdrop that grows right up to the high tide line. The town of Manuel Antonio is small but offers a wide variety of lodging options; from popular backpacker spots to several hideaway hotels and luxury vacation rentals. In this small town, you can enjoy the fresh fruits and veggies from the “feria” (weekly market), have a five star meal at many of the restaurants, hire a private chef to cook for you or mix in with the locals and join them eating a “casado”(typical Costa Rican meal) at any of the “sodas”(little local restaurants). Whether you are a wildlife lover, adventure seeker or you just want to be a beach bum, the array of activities in Manuel Antonio is endless!

charming and quiet town, La Fortuna is easily accessible from the capital city San Jose and offers the best panoramic views of the spectacular Arenal Volcano, which until December 2010 was Costa’s Rica’s most active volcano. The volcano is about 10 kilometers away from town making it a beautiful sight from the town square. The volcano has not erupted lava since December 2010, but it is still considered active. Not to worry though, Arenal Volcano is widely monitored for the safety of the surrounding area. Aside for the glorious view of the volcano, the area has many Mother Nature-inspired activities for you to enjoy. The Rio Celeste waterfall trail is known for its pristine blue (celeste) waters that you have to see to believe. Hot springs and cool rivers (Rio Frio) also await you and you can even scale down 200-foot waterfall on a rope (let’s call it “canyoning”). The Arenal and La Fortuna region is where you come to immerse yourself in nature while having a rendez-vous with the beauties of the rain forest.

Wave Rafting A pair of toucans swoops by as your raft turns another bend in the river, opening up to deeper sounds of the rainforest. The tropical sun hits your face between the lush jungle canopy overhead. “Forward paddle!” directs your local guide with a smile as you begin to charge towards the energizing sounds of churning white water. You wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world. This is Costa Rica!. No visit to the eco paradise of Costa Rica would be complete without a true jungle adventure – Wave Rafting style. Wave Expedition not only offers whitewater rafting, ATV and waterfall rappelling tours, but they do so with local guides to share the rich Tico traditions and culture to make each excursion is a unique experience.
