A word from the Director 2018 is the 10-year anniversary of

Caribe Shuttle!

M

y business partner John Wheatley had the idea back in 2008. At the time, travel between the nearby surf towns of Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica and Bocas del Toro, Panama was a chaotic mess. It not only involved a multiple succession of taxi’s, buses and boats but also the hope you’d not be stranded somewhere in the process. At the border you were on your own to wade through the confusing immigration system and customs check. John thought, wouldn’t it be great if there were an organized operation with everything combined to get from one town to the other? And so, Caribe Shuttle was born. A decade later, I have been running the show for the last six of those years with the concept of making the travel experience more enjoyable and reliable. We strive for better customer service combined with unique routes and modern conveniences like onboard WIFI and even this magazine you’re holding. Caribe Shuttle has also grown to extend our reach to many destinations in Costa Rica and now into Nicaragua! Diacachimba! Looking forward, we could not be more excited for the next decade to come. Regardless of what your future travel plans may hold, you will be able to continue to count on Caribe Shuttle to thrive and be an innovative leader in the shuttle and transportation industry here in Central America. I can’t wait! Thank you for taking the ride with us!

www.caribeshuttle.com The Wayfarer is the first onboard magazine for a shuttle company in the region of Central America. With over eight years of experience in the shuttle service business, Caribe Shuttle is taking a step forward and presents this new magazine to all its customers, business partners and friends, as a valuable information media about their destinations and services.

Puerto Viejo,

A crucible of cultures Puerto Viejo is pure “Afro-Caribbean flavor”. A paradise amongst mountains, green landscapes and the Caribbean Sea, where the fusion of cultures vibrates in every corner.

S

urrounded by beaches of volcanic sand and crystal clear waters, Puerto Viejo is a unique destination. PV is the perfect choice for delicious food and pure living.

The different cultural manifestations are accomplished in the flavors that inspire local Caribbean cuisine. That same heart felt vibe is witnessed in the colorful bungalows that appear along its entire route. The genuine construction of the “Caribbean Climate” and the warmth of its people, generate a connectivity with nature’s vibe and serve as the complete disconnection of city life. As night falls, the calypso and the rhythmic Caribbean sounds serenade your soul and help to let out your inner Rasta vibrations.

Bread & Chocolate Our favorite spot for breakfast has to be Bread and Chocolate! it’s a busy café found downtown. At peak breakfast hours you may have a short wait for a table, but it’s well worth it. Start off your day with a French press coffee and a fresh juice to go with breakfast. They also have a delicious sandwich menu for lunch, or a great option on a hot Caribbean day is the fresh gazpacho accompanied by a fresh squeezed lemonade with ginger. And we can’t talk about Bread and Chocolate without mentioning the CHOCOLATE!!! It’s hard to decide when considering dessert, as there are so many

amazing options. Their locally grown cacao is made bean-to-bar in house and then turned into their delicious desserts. Whether you choose one of their chocolate cakes, their rich brownies, or their chocolate truffles, you can’t go wrong. Whether it’s to start off your morning, or to pass by in the afternoon for something sweet, we highly recommend this place! 723 +(506) 2750-0 oviejo bandcpuert erto Viejo de Calle 215, Pu Costa Rica Talamanca,

BriBri Springs Brewery Brewing beer has been a large part of my life, I first learned to brew beer at the age of 14. It is and always has been my passion. The beer industry has gone through many changes over the years and I have remained true to my dream throughout that process, to brew my own craft beer in paradise. Since 2012 I have been part of the craft beer revolution in Costa Rica. I am honored to remain a part in this country’s growth in the industry. I have gone from brewing 10 gallon batches at the hotel to building a fully operational 100% Tico brew house. I designed a two barrel, three vessel system with hot liquor tank, mash/lauter tun and brew kettle, allowing me to brew on a bigger scale. At this point in my journey, I believe I have begun to master the art of brewing a world class craft beer and I am proud of the growth of my product. What began as a two keg per batch production behind the hotel has grown into an international phenomenon that attracts beer lovers from around the world

to Puerto Viejo and Kaya’s Place Hotel and Brewery! In addition to having the top rated craft beer in the region, our esteemed selection includes 12+ varieties of beer and cider, many of them made with local ingredients and fresh spring water, creating a one of a kind flavor, wild, local and thirst quenching. We are also home to the famous ‘MangoPineapple Basi’ which is inspired by the traditional Costa Rican drink ‘Agua de Sapo’, Three years ago, I created the annual Puerto Viejo Festival del Cervecero Independiente. Every September, in conjunction with Costa Rica’s Independence Day, I invite the Independent Craft Brewers of Costa Rica to come to Puerto Viejo and celebrate the passion we share for brewing beer. Pacuare Rafting Tour Exciting and fun, that’s why you have to live it! The Pacuare River is one of the best choices for your adventure treks in Costa Rica. There isn´t another tour in the country that can offer you a perfect blend of wilderness exposure and excitement, both in one day. Pacuare is world famous for its sheer beauty. A true river gorge, it is flanked by steep, green walls. Here you enjoy the feeling of total isolation from urban life and the realness of being connected with nature. You see waterfalls coming into the river from both sides as colorful, tropical birds fly right over your head. Amazing views of this virgin tropical rainforest area. It is not an overly challenging river, but it has a lot of rapids, that gives you an adventure filled with lots of fun. Sustainability of the

" Pura vida" in Costa Rica Costa Rica is all about ecotourism and the “Pura vida, but how sustainable is it, really?

By: Christine Larson-Krishnan, Community Collaborator, Desafio Adventure Company 20

January-June 2018 - 3rd edition

T

t’s been more than a decade since the World Tourism Organization (WTO) defined sustainable tourism as managing all resources in such a way that economic and social needs are fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity and biological diversity. Costa Rica has successfully marketed itself as a leader in going green. The country prides itself on its trailblazing efforts to set aside areas for conservation and establish a strong network of national parks. In addition, Costa Rica has a stable democratic government with no army, a pleasant year-round climate, and is considered one of the happiest countries in the world. It has one of the highest standards of living, the largest middle class, the best public health care system and public education through the university level, and the highest literacy rate in Latin America.

Costa Rica is not far from this goal — it already gets 98 percent of its electricity from renewable resources (mainly hydropower, but also geothermal, wind, solar, and biomass). The only fossil fuel the country utilizes is diesel. Costa Rica’s President Luis Guillermo Solis proclaimed “...it’s the constitutional right of the people to enjoy a clean environment.” However, many visitors question if it’s just green washing or a real, authentic part of Costa Rican culture to be environmentally conscious. I’ m happy to say, the younger generation in Costa Rica is truly embracing the concept of conservation and local schools and children regularly organize and participate in proenvironment activities.

3rd edition - www.caribeshuttle.com

21

Tales of a Wayfarer Additionally, the private sector in Costa Rica has also recognized the economic benefits of streamlining business practices and many have jumped on the sustainability bandwagon. Desafio Adventure Company, for example, turned 25 years old this year and is not only considered the pioneer of adventure in the Arenal Volcano area, but also the pioneer of environmental education. We have a long history of consistently organizing a variety of conservation activities such as river clean-ups, school recycling programs, and tree planting, as well as promoting socially and culturally responsible tours. We have also worked hard to get our workers, visitors, and local community involved and engaged because we recognize that the full involvement of local communities in tourism not only

22

January-June 2018 - 3rd edition

benefits them and the environment, but also improves the quality of our tourism projects. That’s why we invite clients to participate in the Desafio Adopt a Tree program, an initiative that allows them to plant trees with local youth along strategic biological corridors and rainforest areas. Desafio also has several tours that help clients get up close and personal with Costa Rican culture and ecological restoration programs, such as our Costa Rican Traditions Cooking Class and organic farm tours. By partaking in activities like these, clients experience the authentic “Pura vida of Costa Rica firsthand.

OM Cafe

In December 2001, a young East Indian woman who grew up in Toronto, Canada came to Bocas del Toro with a dream. In September 2002, Sunanda’s dream was brought to life when she opened up OM Cafe in a little street side location with the help of her mom, who, armed with her culinary expertise and family recipes, worked tirelessly to create a diverse and delicious menu. It all starts with a 50 pound bag of onions and lots of tomatoes. Everything at OM Cafe is made from scratch the “old fashioned” way, from the masalas, to the paneer and even homemade yogurt. If you’re not in the mood for just Indian they also have an international menu which includes dishes such

as their famous Pad Thai, Red Coconut Curry and 5 Spice Fish, to name a few. OM Cafe has come a long way in its 15 years of operation. In its newest location, you can enjoy the same excellent cuisine and funky atmosphere over the water with a beautiful sunset and ocean view. Tales of a Wayfarer

When The Sky Becomes Extinct The Most Unexpected Culture Shock from Life in the Jungle Living at Cashew Hill Jungle Lodge in Costa Rica, we are used to hearing all types of comments and questions from new tourists unaccustomed with jungle life. Most often it involves the intense tropical heat, surplus of huge bugs, seeing a sloth for the first time or waking up to the terrifying sounds of howler monkeys. And rightfully so; these are all things that people don’t exactly encounter in daily life at home. But nothing prepared me for the most unexpected instance of culture shock I had ever come across. The concept was so foreign—it was actually quite saddening.

Sorry,” I say. “I didn’t understand your question.”“S’it normally this bright?” She says again in her thick British accent. I look around quick. “Sorry, your porch light is too bright?” Ten minutes earlier I

had helped her and her friend with a late night check-in into one of the jungle lodges. They were both in their 20s and had just flown in from the UK for a two-week Caribbean vacation.

Tales of a Wayfarer She laughs. “Nahmate, the sky! S’it normally this brightout ’ere? I’ve never seen so many stars!” I pause for a second then look up from the table outside the Cashew Hill main reception. “Actually,” I say trying to break the news gently. “There’s barely any stars tonight. The moon is out and you can hardly see the Big Dipper over there.”“Nah, you takin’the piss outtame?” She responds pointing up to the north. “That up there is the Big Dipper??”“Yeah, you see those seven stars faintly there and then the North Star up above? I mean it’s visible everywhere in the northern hemisphere...sorry, where are you guys from?”“London England,” her friend responds. “And nah, I’ve never really seen stars before. We don’t really get any of ’em in the big bright haze of the city. But it’s really quite somthin’, ain’tit?““Hold on,” I say closing my laptop to comprehend the discussion. “Neither of you have ever seen the stars before??” The notion hit me like a ton of coconuts*. Never seen the stars before. Wow. What an unexpected luxury it is to grow up in a rural area or spend time in the jungles of Central America.

January-June 2018 - 3rd edition

*Fun fact from life in Costa Rica: a coconut is technically not a nut or a fruit...but a seed As the passing weeks go on, the idea keeps recurring: How many people have actually seen the true night sky—unobstructed by the expanding flood of city lights? It turns out to be a difficult question to answer. The more I ask around, the more I start to realize that a lot of people growing up with suburban lives have a skewed idea of what the space above us is supposed to look like. There is so much more to it than a couple stars here and there or a polluted haze that we look at through our phones to be told where planets and constellations allegedly are. The heavens exist! And so do we—right in the middle of our galaxy, the Milky Way, which is visible to our naked eye...or was. According to Science Advances, one-third of humanity is no longer able to see the Milky Way—including 60% of Europeans and 80% of Americans. The urban areas where the majority of people now live are simply too dense with light pollution. We have created a permanent “skyglow” above us. Instead of seeing our place in the universe, we have replaced it with streetlights, neon signs and giant

billboards. Talk about a shock from culture. What a sad realization: The biggest thing that exists—our night sky—is becoming extinct. If only we could trap it and put it in a zoo. Or maybe that will be the biggest selling point for buying an expensive ticket for the future space tourism that lies ahead: The chance to see the stars as they once were seen from Earth! These are our living heavens. Let’s not take them for granted. The night sky has been visible to us since the beginning to remind us where and why we exist. Let’s not let it die out. ¡Pura Vida!

Paso 6:
