roarin’ twenties came to life in the Liu/Cheung Theater as Webb students debuted Chicago for the spring musical.
Chicago proved to be a great selection as tickets quickly sold out for all shows. The students devoted countless hours to perfecting the show and audiences were captivated by the performances.
Watching the students fall more and more in love with this show every rehearsal was one of Fine Arts Department Chair Stefanie Plumley’s favorite parts about working on this show. The students bonded quickly over the many fun and challenging numbers in the musical. Many of them stuck around long after rehearsals ended to help those struggling with choreography and cheered each other on as they successfully completed their numbers.
Selecting this musical was not an easy feat for Plumley. “When choosing a musical, the first thing you need to consider is vocal range. I knew I had a couple of great baritones, a lot of strong altos, very few sopranos, and no tenors! I had to find a show that could accommodate that.” Plumley also considers the strengths and personalities of the students that
she knows will be auditioning and chooses a show that is flexible enough to accommodate students new to theater as well.
The Fine Arts Department provides many opportunities to engage students in performing arts and hopes to continue doing so year after year. Plumley explained: “There are so many kids interested in music, dance and theater, and it is so exciting to introduce them to all different kinds of performance, give them opportunities to learn, grow and practice their skills, and hone their talents.” During the 202324 school year, students were able to see different types of shows, from Les Misérables to a one-woman show in Los Angeles as well as the film productions of Waitress and The Color Purple. They were also given opportunities to showcase their talents at open mic nights and student-run Jubilee, held in the Copeland Donahue Theater, which provided an intimate space for vocal and instrumental performances.

BUILDING THE FUTURE TOGETHER!
As we prepare for the launch of WebbGPT in our Technology & Innovation Course, I am inspired to reflect on Webb’s legacy of academic innovation and excellence. As we have done again and again over more than a century at Webb, we continue to develop and utilize new learning tools, such as generative AI, as part of The AI Project@Webb while also strengthening our commitment to our campus community and student/faculty collaboration. All of this is made possible through the generosity of alumni, families and friends at Webb. We are building the future together!
Your philanthropy impacts every aspect of the Webb experience—from financial aid for our talented and curious students to new faculty housing to a new fleet of safe and comfortable vans, enabling faculty, coaches, and students to explore, discover and compete throughout Southern California. Your sustained commitment to growing Webb’s endowment also remains critical to our success in our second century and beyond.
The pages of this report illustrate how your thoughtful philanthropy opens up new opportunities for Webb students who are preparing to lead and shape the future. I am encouraged to read so many new and familiar names on these pages, the names of those who supported the school in 2023-24. On behalf of our entire community, I extend a heartfelt thank you. This report celebrates you, your vision, and your commitment and loyalty to Webb’s mission and values.
This report also marks an inspiring moment at Webb as we approach the culmination of The Centennial Strategic Plan and The Centennial Campaign. These years have been profoundly transformative at Webb, from pioneering changes in our academic program to doubling the size of our campus to museum renovations and increasing our support for financial aid and faculty excellence.
During The Centennial Years, the generosity shown by our community has touched every area of school life and has put Webb in the strongest position possible to continue to improve, innovate, and lead in the years ahead. Indeed, we are building the future together!
In gratitude,
Theresa Smith, Ph.D. Head of School

Transformational Impact Across Campus:
A CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE
by Michael Chang ’92, P ’23, Development Chair, Webb Board of Trustees
I enjoy connecting alumni, parents, and friends with Webb’s mission in a way that inspires them to partner with us to make Webb the incredible institution and community it is today.
In fact, a few weeks ago we hosted a dinner in Hong Kong with thirty alumni from all over the world. Alumni spanning four decades of all ages and backgrounds from Hong Kong, Singapore, the U.S., and China share a common Webb experience that forever bonds us together.
Everywhere I travel, there are Webbies and we have an instant connection when we meet. Webb has worked intentionally to bring the best and the brightest to Claremont from across the country and around the world and it shows. There are so many exciting updates to share with you that are due to the incredible generosity shown by the Webb community during The Next 100: The Centennial Campaign .
OPENING WEBB TO THE WORLD
Approximately one-third of our students are supported by scholarships made possible, in part, through philanthropy.
We added more than 43 new endowed funds to date in this campaign and 17 of them were for scholarship endowment. In addition to new funds, many of our donors dramatically increased their giving to existing funds. In raw dollars, our scholarship funds increased 159% to a total of more than $31.5 million.
FOSTERING ACADEMIC INNOVATION
We added 15 new endowed funds for academic and faculty support during the Centennial Campaign, which in combination with gifts to existing funds represented an increase of 56% to a new total of more than $6.5 million. Donors to the Alf Museum established eight new endowed funds. When combined with gifts to existing funds, they generated an increase of 61% for a total of more than $7.4 million.
Adding in our endowed funds for physical plant and operations our total endowment doubled from $33 million to more than $70 million.
Bonnie Johnson Hall, our newest science laboratory
What makes this even more exciting is the completion of transformative planned gifts, many of which will go directly toward our endowment. In addition to the history-making $100 million bequest that is the bedrock of our campaign, donors have contributed more than $29 million in deferred gifts to Webb and the Alf Museum. These future commitments, when received, will propel the value of Webb’s endowment to $200 million.
TRANSFORMING OUR CAMPUS HOME
We added 75 acres of land adjacent to the campus, doubling the footprint of our current property. And we renovated McMillin Park and Centennial Plaza (the undulating lawn once known as the south field where we held our Centennial Celebration in 2022).
Significant efforts were also made indoors, many of which focused on student life and the student experience. More than $22 million in philanthropy was invested in the physical plant largely for restoration and capital improvements. Among the many success stories, the Stockdale Community Center is a shining example. The sciences and the Alf Museum were transformed with three new classroom laboratories, a fossil preparation lab, museum collections facilities, and more. W. Fawcett Library will reopen soon, complete with an innovation lab featuring the latest technology and collaborative spaces for students to work and ideate together. And the students will gladly tell you how much they appreciate the air-conditioned dorms, every room, and the renovations that make residential living so enjoyable.
Significant efforts were made indoors, many of which focused on student life and the student experience.
While these are the large noticeable projects, there are also many important upgrades that are less obvious. New roofs, paint, flooring, and plumbing. Expansion of technology infrastructure and AI tools. New fire suppression, safety, and security features. Faculty homes inhabited by teachers, spouses, and their children. I often tell people that the Webb campus is not only a community in the human sense. We also operate like a little city with all of the infrastructure needs like roads, parking, and landscaping. The investments we’ve made in the past few years enable us to dream big about the future.
FINAL THOUGHTS
In June 2013, the Fulfilling Our Promise campaign was completed with a total of $50.4 million in outright and planned gifts. It yielded more than twice the amount as our previous Building Character campaign. So, how do you think we did when we set out to raise $200 million, four times the amount of our most recent campaign? Check webb.org after October 19 to see a broadcast of our Campaign Celebration announcement.
And don’t forget that our campaign formally concludes on December 31, 2024. There is still time to participate. Please join me and my family in support of this historic moment in time.

The Webb Fund
During the 2023–24 year, over 1,100 members of the Webb community made a gift to an area of campus most meaningful to them. Many selected The Webb Fund as their preferred area of support, knowing their dollars will go directly to use. To meet the increasingly complex operational needs of our campus home, Webb requires flexible resources designated to address our most urgent and highest priorities. As an integral part of life at The Webb Schools, The Webb Fund does just that, channeling the individual philanthropy of our community toward five major pillars of the Webb experience. The Webb Fund is at the forefront of sustaining the core of Webb’s residential life activities, academic programs, and experiential learning opportunities. Thanks to those who supported The Webb Fund, critical projects can be addressed without hesitation. All areas of campus rely on The Webb Fund for adequate resources to conduct daily operations, everything from senior talks in the Vivian Webb Chapel and community dinners to field trips and offcampus excursions. With the support of The Webb Fund, Webb’s Office of Culture and Community was able to run up to eight uniquely positioned affinity groups, in addition to a wider number of communitywide special events and engagement opportunities illuminating the diversity of Webb’s global community through a number of different lenses. The Webb Fund also made possible over $6 million in financial aid for over a quarter of the student population during the 2023-24 academic year.
Faculty and staff also benefit from The Webb Fund. Their classrooms are outfitted with the latest technology to ensure students receive the best education. They receive funding to attend conferences and continuing education seminars to keep them at the forefront of secondary education. Staff across campus also lean on support from The Webb Fund to keep their programming and services cutting-edge, making operations run smoothly for everyone. It is thanks to donors at all levels, each year, that Webb can attract and retain a community of dedicated individuals committed to the highest quality education of our entire student body.
If you have any questions regarding a gift to The Webb Fund, or you would like to establish a monthly or annually recurring gift, please contact Peter Gilman, director of The Webb Fund at (909) 482-5288 or pgilman@webb.org.
Giving Day 2024
GIVING DAY 2024
Webb’s annual Giving Day celebrated its seventh installment earlier this year. A major success by every measure, it smashed through a 36-hour donor participation record for the second year in a row. This well-beloved philanthropic tradition saw over 560 members of the Webb community coming together from several countries around the globe and more than half of the states across the nation. From Montana to Massachusetts, and Alaska all the way down to Hawaii, our alumni, parents, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends answered the call to participate, raising vital resources for our campus community.
Nearly $600,000 in combined support was committed to some of the most urgent priorities and highest need areas of our campus home. Alumni were especially key to surging past the campaign’s initial target. For the second consecutive year, the Class of 2004 was crowned the participation champions, taking the title for most overall donors by a graduating class. This year, alumni from as long ago as 1949 stepped up to do their part in honor of their Webb experience. Not to be left out from joining the excitement, even a soon-to-be graduating member of the Class of 2024 was counted among our donor community. Volunteers are also a critical factor in Giving Day’s success. By spreading the word across social media and reaching out via email, text message, and phone call they’re able to rally extra support through their own Webb affiliated networks. Additional volunteers rally support by issuing a match or challenge gift. These matching and challenge donors help others maximize their giving by doubling or even tripling the dollars contributed by their fellow classmates, parents, or friends.
Perhaps one of the most inspiring qualities of Webb’s annual Giving Day is the flexibility donors have in choosing from among virtually any area of Webb they’d like to support. Some of the most selected areas include The Webb Fund, the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, financial aid and other tuition related assistance programs, our cultural and community initiatives, athletics and afternoon activities, and student life. Every gift toward any designation, and in any amount is vital to helping The Webb Fund reach its annual goals. All gifts made during this annual campaign have a direct and immediate impact on our students, faculty and staff. Without Giving Day, the innovative and dynamic programs found across all aspects of life at Webb and the Alf Museum wouldn’t be nearly as robust.
You may look forward to the eighth annual Giving Day expected to run in the spring of 2025. We thank you for your involvement and support and look forward to sharing more details soon!
A Timeless Tribute to the Past, A Bold Look to the Future
Webb is completing a new visual identity that pays homage to its rich history while positioning it for the next 100 years. This rebrand draws inspiration from Webb’s past while looking ahead to a future full of promise, encapsulating the spirit of both tradition and innovation that defines our community.
At the heart of the new look is a timeless, elegant wordmark carefully crafted to reflect Webb’s enduring legacy. The centerpiece of this new identity is the reimagined “W,” a powerful symbol that honors both Vivian Webb School and Webb School of California. The design, featuring interlocking “V”s that form the “W,” beautifully represents Webb’s evolution into one school this year, symbolizing unity and cohesion as the two schools come together.
Complementing the elegant logo are design motifs inspired by Webb’s founding in 1922 and the iconic California architecture that graces our campus. The architectural arches, a signature feature throughout Webb’s grounds, serve as a visual link between our history and our bright future, adding depth and character to the brand.
The new look for one Webb touches every aspect of Webb’s identity. From a redesigned website and refreshed admission materials to branded vehicles, stationery, signage, and banners, Webb’s new look will be omnipresent. Even student swag reflects this exciting new era, with more elements being rolled out throughout the year, that enhances school pride.
Webb’s rebrand is more than just a fresh look—it’s a reflection of who we are and where we’re headed. By drawing on our past and looking boldly to the future, we are ensuring that Webb remains a beacon of excellence for generations to come.
Affiliates Support Webb’s New Vehicles
We are thrilled to express our heartfelt gratitude to The Affiliates, Webb’s parent association, for their generous support last year, which helped us acquire two brand-new Chevy Suburbans. These vehicles are not just an exciting addition to our transportation fleet, but they play a key role in Webb’s continued growth and rebranding efforts.
The SUVs, wrapped in a striking Webb design “skin,” are truly eye-catching. They function as moving billboards, spreading the good news about Webb as they travel across California and the region. Whether they’re headed to Los Angeles, the Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree National Park, or even downtown Claremont, these vehicles showcase Webb’s commitment to unbounded student experiences and innovative education.
The new vehicles enhance our students’ journeys and proudly represent Webb wherever they go. We couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities they provide for building our presence and sharing the Webb spirit across the state and beyond.
Thank you once again to the Affiliates for their ongoing support and dedication to our school community!
Our faculty’s dedication is evident through both the extraordinary and the ordinary, creating a rich, nurturing environment.

Faculty
WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT WEBB?
by Michael Hoe ’04, Assistant Head of School
Time and time again, the most frequent response from former Webb students that I get to this question is: the faculty. And for good reason. Each and every day, our faculty show up for our students in a variety of different spaces. As most people know, the faculty at Webb are not simply classroom teachers. Our faculty use every interaction with their students, whether inside or outside the classroom, as a valuable learning opportunity. They consistently use these interactions to enrich our students’ educational experience, turning what most see as “everyday encounters,” into intentional moments for growth and understanding.
The 2023-24 academic year was no different. The efforts of our amazing faculty were nothing short of extraordinary in every facet of the school. But beyond teaching a one-of-a-kind educational program within the walls of the classrooms on campus, our faculty took it far beyond the traditional learning environments and channeled all their inner Ray Alfs and got back out into the field.
Over the past academic year, our faculty revitalized our field studies program to include immersive learning experiences all throughout Southern California. And while it is impossible to name every single experience that happened last year, some notable highlights include: Evolutionary Biology students utilizing UC Riverside’s cutting-edge laboratories as part of the biotechnology unit; Anatomy and Physiology cohorts gaining hands-on experience at Western University’s cadaver lab; American Society students delving
deeper into their work at the Benton Museum of Art; Integrated Math 2 students applying mathematical concepts to various rides at the Los Angeles County Fair; LA Literary Culture students completing the Laurel Canyon Walking Tour; Sinfonia students experiencing an inspiring visit to the Walt Disney Concert Hall; and a trip to a thought-provoking French film festival for our advanced French students. Furthermore, we had two groups set out on international educational adventures to Ireland and Senegal during spring break.
And of course, it was an Unbounded Days year! From Joshua Tree to Catalina to Death Valley to right here in Los Angeles, the creativity and ingenuity of our amazing faculty were on full display as students embarked on immersive, inspiring, and engaging three- to five-day trips fully designed by our imaginative and visionary faculty.
These experiences, among countless others, underscore our faculty’s commitment to educating our students beyond the confines of the traditional classroom. Additionally, these amazing experiences continue to demonstrate our belief that true learning knows no bounds and that the world itself can be our most valuable classroom.
And while our exceptional off-campus experiences undoubtedly enrich our students’ education, it is the remarkable ability of our faculty to balance grand visions, like planning incredible Unbounded Days courses, with an unwavering commitment to all the smaller scale, yet daily interactions. These seemingly routine moments—a casual chat on the way to chapel, a brief check-in in the dining hall line, conversations around the community dinner table, face-to-face encounters during dorm duty, exchanges on bus rides to athletic events, or even a simple greeting in
passing—often leave the most lasting impressions on our students. It is this unique combination of thinking big while remaining attentive to the nuances of daily life that makes our faculty truly exceptional. Their dedication is evident through both the extraordinary and the ordinary, creating a rich, nurturing environment where every moment becomes an opportunity for growth and connection.
Of course, I would be remiss not to mention that our year was profoundly affected by the loss of our dear friend, colleague, mentor, and beloved teacher, Jim Dahler. Jim embodied the very best of a Webb faculty member — deeply committed, inspiring, and impressive. His unwavering dedication to his students was evident in each and every interaction, whether grand or small, as he poured his heart and soul into each and every moment that he had with every single member in the Webb community.
In March, we gathered at the Vivian Webb Chapel for a Celebration of Life which brought hundreds of Webb alumni, friends, and family across multiple generations together to honor Jim’s lasting legacy. This beautiful event, filled with heartfelt stories and reflections from community members, served as a poignant reminder of Jim’s love for Webb and the incredible impact that Webb faculty have on our students’ lives.
Throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, our faculty exemplified the same exceptional qualities that Jim so brilliantly embodied during his tenure. Their unwavering commitment to our students, visible in both large-scale and everyday interactions, stands as a testament to Jim’s enduring influence. As I reflect on the year’s accomplishments, I am certain that our faculty’s passion and dedication, evident in both the large scale and the day-to-day, would have brought

Jim immense pride. Our faculty’s collective efforts not only honored his memory but also reinforced the values he held dear, ensuring that his legacy continues to be present in our school community.
As the year concluded, we gathered one last time at commencement to celebrate our seniors and present them with a Webb diploma. Additionally, we also recognized the faculty who guided their journeys and honored faculty excellence with awards. This tradition is one of my favorites, as the students react wildly when the names of award winners are announced. It is a reminder that the impact of our work is both immediate and long-lasting. It is also a poignant reminder that one day, these students will return to say that the thing they miss most about Webb is the faculty.
At Webb, excellence isn’t limited to our remarkable students—it extends to our outstanding staff and faculty as well. These dedicated individuals are the backbone of our vibrant campus community, bringing their passion, expertise, and commitment to every aspect of school life. To honor their contributions, Webb presents a series of awards throughout the year, recognizing faculty and staff members who go above and beyond in their roles, demonstrating extraordinary dedication, innovation, and leadership.
THE 2023-24
PERRY AWARDS
The Perry Awards were established in 1995 by generous donors to honor the life and work of former faculty Les and Barbara Perry, who devoted thirty years to the students of Webb and served the school loyally and in many capacities. The Perry Awards honor those who demonstrate exceptional dedication to the growth and development of Webb students. This year, it was awarded to three individuals.
Anthony Flucker, Humanities
Mr. Anthony Flucker is one of the most versatile teachers Webb has seen. Not only is he a humanities teacher, but he has also been an art teacher, a curriculum designer for Webb’s newest film-making course, a varsity football, wrestling, and track & field coach, and Webb’s Black Affinity Group faculty advisor. Mr. Flucker has invested himself in many different aspects of the programs at Webb. In every role, he has successfully spread his enthusiasm and positivity, enriching the lives of those around him. It goes without saying that Mr. Flucker has made the Webb community a better place in so many more ways than one.
Briar Rose Tirpak, Registrar
There are not many registrar/dorm heads out there and Ms. Briar Rose Tirpak works incredibly hard to ensure that everything at Webb is running according to schedule. As registrar, Ms. Tirpak is a deep thinker who designs, crafts, and manages effective and efficient systems all with an eye towards prioritizing the student experience. As a dorm head, she has cultivated an inclusive, safe, and cozy environment in Jameson. Her residents seek her out for
support and guidance, and their love and admiration for her is clear. While Ms. Tirpak’s contributions may not always be the most visible, her behind-the-scenes efforts are essential to the success of Webb.
Ken Rosenfeld, Humanities and Campus Life
During his nearly 20 years of service to Webb, Mr. Ken Rosenfeld has embodied the values modeled by Les and Barbara Perry. Mr. Rosenfeld is someone who cares deeply about all members of the community, who always seeks to grow, and who is committed to achievement in all of the various facets of Webb. Many students refer to him as one of the most influential figures in their Webb experience. He is a utility player, often assisting in every aspect of student life, whether it be the academic curriculum, coaching the swimming and diving team, or helping in after-school activities and clubs. It goes without saying that Mr. Rosenfeld’s impact on the community can be felt throughout campus and is a true testament to his unwavering commitment to putting the community’s well-being above all else.
FACULTY AND STAFF AWARDS
THE LAURENCE MCMILLIN EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD
Allison Madar, Humanities
Whether it is in the dorms, on the field, at a debate tournament, or simply around campus, Dr. Madar’s dedication to her craft and to her teaching have been quickly felt by the entire Webb community. Her students rave about her ability to teach humanities in ways they could never have imagined. They also talk about how she has helped them to understand history through the lenses of different voices, viewpoints, and experiences that have enriched their ability to understand the past. Dr. Madar’s ongoing commitment to her craft and lifelong learning aligns with the values Laurence McMillin exemplified during his time at Webb.
The Laurence McMillin Excellence in Teaching Award was established and endowed by David Loo ’79.
JAMES T. DEMETRIADES ’80 ENDOWED PRIZE FOR UNBOUNDED THINKING
Andy Farke, Alf Museum
Not unlike Dr. Ray Alf, Dr. Andy Farke is ready to hit the road and get out into the field at any moment. Dr. Farke has not only carried on Ray Alf’s legacy but has evolved the museum program into a prominent research-based educational experience for Webb students. In the classroom, he provides a space for students to engage in high-level research that has yielded numerous published papers. He also spends countless weekends and hours away from campus, in the field digging for fossils. Dr. Farke has engaged in every aspect of the Webb experience, and it is hard to imagine the museum, and Webb, without him.
The James T. Demetriades ’80 Prize for Unbounded Thinking was established and endowed by James T. Demetriades ’80.
JEAN E. MILLER EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD
Brian Caldwell, Mathematics
Having completed multiple Ironman triathlons, road races, and backpacking excursions, it’s hard to imagine where Mr. Brian Caldwell finds the time to dedicate to his teaching practice. Somehow, he does. Generations of Webbies have benefitted from Mr. Caldwell’s deep commitment to his students. Mr. Caldwell makes math approachable and instills confidence in his students. He fosters environments of team building, rooted in trust and support. He truly cares for each of his students, and it shows in their relationships and work. He is always one that comes up as one of the most influential, positive, and encouraging teachers that countless Webb alumni remember.
The Jean E. Miller Excellence in Teaching Award was established and endowed by The Affiliates of The Webb Schools.
THOMPSON AND VIVIAN WEBB AWARD
Sarah Trobaugh, Mathematics
In just two years, Ms. Sarah Trobaugh’s commitment to Webb has had a far-reaching impact. In the classroom, her students admire her patience, willingness to always take the extra time to review concepts with them, and her enthusiastic support that she always gives them, no matter the assignment, no matter the day. Additionally, Ms. Trobaugh’s contributions in the cross-country and track programs have made the student runners not just better individuals, but better teammates as well. Ms. Trobaugh has also served as a VWS lead class advisor and has played a major part in thinking through how to build community
within the junior class. It is clear that Ms. Trobaugh’s commitment to Webb reaches far and wide and she is always all-in in everything she does.
The Thompson and Vivian Webb Award was endowed by Edmund L. Piper ’43.
JOHN AND MADELINE FRAMPTON STAFF CELEBRATION AWARD
Adriana Flores, College Guidance
Mrs. Adriana Flores has served the Webb community for over 20 years, starting in the Business Office before shifting to the College Guidance Office nine years ago. Her warmth, kindness, attention to detail, and ability to take on any task are her trademarks. Mrs. Flores is also great at crafting a safe space for Webb students, especially when they seem to need it most. Mrs. Flores doesn’t just do the job because it’s work, but because she cares so deeply about the success of the students. She is the “heart” of the College Guidance Office and Mr. Martinez even admits that his work would be nowhere close to what it is without her.
The John and Madeline Frampton Staff Celebration Award was endowed anonymously in 2023.
JACQUES AND MIMI PAUWELS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN WORLD LANGUAGES AND CULTURES
Viviana Nicolosi, World Languages
Ms. Viviana Nicolosi’s dedication to education is unbounded. Since joining Webb, Ms. Nicolosi has consistently championed student travel, whether it be within the confines of Webb’s campus, in the local community, or halfway across the globe. Her passion for teaching and exploring the world has seamlessly integrated global perspectives into her classroom. She inspires her students to fully immerse themselves in
language acquisition by exploring diverse countries and their rich cultures. Additionally, Ms. Nicolosi has taken on the challenge of teaching not just one, but two world languages—a testament to her unwavering commitment to her profession and her firm belief in the value of teaching world languages. It is clear that Ms. Nicolosi recognizes the significance and transformative power of boarding schools, and it is safe to say that her contributions to Webb would resonate deeply with the Pauwels family.
The Jacques and Mimi Pauwels Award for Excellence in World Languages and Cultures was established and endowed by Eric Pauwels ’79 in honor of his parents.
THE JOANN ROBINSON STAFF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Jose Garcia, Dining Services
Mr. Jose Garcia has been an integral part of the Webb community for over 32 years, starting as a dish room staff member and currently serving as a prep cook since 2002. His passion for his work is evident in his commitment to creating delicious and unique salad dressings from scratch and his dedication to offering a wide variety of freshly made salads and concoctions. Despite facing challenges, Jose takes pride in showing up to work with a positive attitude every day. His family is also a testament to his success, with his wife of 29 years and three children. Two of his children have made their own mark at Webb. His daughter Jasmine graduated from Vivian Webb School in 2020 and his son Alexis is part of our security team. We appreciate having Jose as a member of our team and hope to continue learning from his hard work and dedication.
The Joann Robinson Staff Distinguished Service Award was established in 2012 to honor an exemplary staff member for their long term and dedicated service to the Webb community.
WEBB IS A TRANSFORMATIVE PLACE
by Briar Rose Tirpak, Registrar and 2023 Perry Award Recipient
As the school’s registrar and the dorm head of Jameson, I lead a very busy life at Webb. During the day it’s jumping from the Academic Council meeting with department chairs about our latest academic innovations straight into discussions with students about course changes, sending out transcripts for alumni, managing our student information system database, and thoughtfully creating the student, teacher, and classroom schedules. After that, it’s time to run to the store to grab snacks or supplies for the dorm, check in with parents about upcoming weekend passes for residents, host a movie night in my living room, make sure dorm chores are complete, and check in with each resident individually in Jameson. This work is demanding and time-consuming, but I find it to be deeply fulfilling.
I was honored to receive a Perry Award in the 2023-24 school year for excellence and dedication to the students at Webb, and I immediately knew that I wanted to use the grant to achieve a life-long dream of traveling to Greece. Ever since I cracked open D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths at age 10 in my middle school library, I was hooked. The intertwining of mythology and history of Greece has fascinated me from a young age and even led me to a minor in classical cultures while studying at Seton Hall University.
This July, I was finally able to visit Greece and experience that history for myself. Hiking up to the top of the Acropolis in Athens provided my first glimpse of the expanse of the land and sea that I
had spent so much time studying and imagining. Walking through the ruins and ancient temples was like stepping back in time to an age of gods and legends. I went scuba diving off the coast of Mykonos to view ancient amphorae and shipwrecks and bathed in the hot springs of a volcano in Santorini. I enjoyed pita and tzatziki and olive oil and made new friends from across the globe during every meal. Two summers ago, I was in Webb’s pool being taught how to swim for the first time in my life by other faculty members, and now here I am having gone scuba diving in Greece!
I returned to my campus home rejuvenated and ready to jump right back into finalizing the academic schedule for the new school year. I am deeply thankful to the founders of this award, and to the award committee and administration for supporting me in this journey. Webb is a transformational place, not just for students, but for every faculty and staff member, and I am so honored to be part of this community and call Webb my home.
The Les and Barbara Perry Faculty Enrichment Fund was established in 1995 by generous donors to honor Les and Barbara Perry for their decades-long dedication to Webb students. As an endowed fund held in perpetuity, this fund supports The Perry Awards, presented to deserving faculty who embody the legacy of Les and Barbara Perry.

Endowed Funds
ENDOWED FUNDS
As funds held in perpetuity, endowments generate revenue for scholarships, educational programs, athletics, faculty enrichment, and many other areas critical to the success of the school and museum. A generous endowment gives an institution confidence that it can remain true to its mission regardless of a challenging economy. The Board of Trustees currently uses a 4.0% payout rate for Webb and a 5.0% payout rate for the Alf Museum. All funds above this amount are reinvested for continued growth as a hedge against inflation. Endowed funds are managed by Goldman Sachs & Co., a global leader in investment research, strategy, and management. We are forever grateful to the individuals and families whose generosity secures the future of The Webb Schools and the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology.
Below are the endowed funds created in the 2023-24 year. To see a full list of endowed funds, please visit webb.org/giving/endowed-funds or scan the QR code.
The Jim Dahler Fund for Faculty Excellence
Established and named in memory of a long-term faculty member, The Jim Dahler Fund for Faculty Excellence supports the lives and professional work of talented and dedicated faculty. Few educators embody the spirit of Webb as completely as Jim Dahler did in his 36 years of service. His legacy lives on in the spirit of those he inspired — students, alumni, faculty, staff, and parents who are forever grateful for his numerous contributions and who created this fund in his honor.
The Gao/Li Family Fund for Faculty Development and Support
Moved by the long and meaningful career of Jim Dahler, Liangyu Gao and Kun Li P ’26 created this fund to thank and support teachers for dedicating their life to the profession. Designated funding supports Webb’s faculty sabbatical program. The fund allows faculty paid time off for research and creative activities, travel, development of new curriculum or programs, acquisition of new skills, and more.
The Alexandra Wang ’27 Fund for Faculty Excellence
Established by Rick and Fiona Wang P ’27, The Alexandra Wang ’27 Fund supports the lives and
professional work of Webb’s faculty. Funds may be used to ensure faculty development is available to all Webb educators. Examples include professional growth activities, curriculum development grants, life enrichment activities, and special campus home improvements.
The Ding Family Endowed Fund
Established in honor of their children, Jian Ding and Yi Wang P ’24, ’28, ’28 created The Ding Family Fund to provide perpetual unrestricted operating funds to Webb to enhance its operations and secure its future.
Liu/Sheng Family Fund for Excellence in History
Created by Yong Liu and Yiwen Sheng P ’27, the Liu/Sheng Fund supports Webb’s history program, specifically the study and research of history by teachers and students.
William R. Ripley ’60 Scholarship Fund
Established by Richard Dukes ’78 in honor of his former teacher, the William R. Ripley ’60 Scholarship Fund supports students interested in world languages, international relations, and service, areas of study that Bill Ripley excelled in.
THE HASTINGS SOCIETY
The Hastings Society recognizes donors who support The Webb Schools and the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology year after year. Named for Alfred B. Hastings, Jr. ’42, this society honors our most loyal supporters who embody Al’s commitment to the schools and our community.
A distinguished alumnus, life trustee, and consistent donor, Al dedicated his life to the advancement of The Webb Schools, giving every year and joining the Thompson & Vivian Webb Society by making a planned gift to the schools. He was an early champion of the establishment of Vivian Webb School and a close friend to Thompson and Vivian Webb.
Membership in the Hastings Society is automatic after you have made a gift to Webb or the Alf Museum for three consecutive fiscal years (measured from July 1 to June 30). You remain in the society as long as you continue to renew your annual support.
Thank you to each and every member of the Hastings Society for their steadfast support.

A LEGACY BAKED WITH GUSTO: REMEMBERING JIM DAHLER
For 36 years, Jim Dahler wasn’t just a fixture at Webb — he was the heart and soul. Joining in 1987, Jim wore many hats: beloved math teacher, dorm head, lead advisor, and even a spirited coach, diving for volleyballs with great zeal.
Jim’s classroom was infused with his joy for learning. He wasn’t just shaping minds in Honors Precalculus and Advanced Linear Algebra; he was igniting a passion for math itself with innovative teaching methods. And his impact transcended the classroom. His door was always open, offering a haven for both students and colleagues.
A true foodie, Jim shared his zest for life with his students and colleagues through other passions — cooking and baking. His culinary creations were legendary, delighting taste buds and fostering a sense of community. And his dedication extended to the court as coach, where his unwavering support for his teams became the stuff of Webb lore.
In February 2024, the Webb community lost a giant. Jim wasn’t just a teacher; he
was a mentor, confidant, and role model for generations. His warmth, kindness, and genuine care were felt by all. As one colleague aptly stated, “Mr. Dahler’s legacy goes far beyond the classroom, and he will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.”
To celebrate this extraordinary educator and friend, an anonymous alumnus has established The Jim Dahler Fund for Faculty Excellence. This fund will support the lives and professional work of talented and dedicated faculty, mirroring Jim’s commitment to fostering excellence in others.
“Mr. Dahler made an enormous difference in my life and that of my classmates,” shared the anonymous donor. “He had such a pure heart and cared for my academic development, well-being, and personal growth as if I were his family. It is my hope that this fund will live on to celebrate his memory and help other faculty in their personal and professional lives.”
We invite you to honor Jim or another faculty member by donating to The Jim Dahler Faculty Fund for Excellence. Visit webb.org/donate or contact Christine Leible at cleible@webb.org or (909) 482-5277.
GIVING BACK TO PROPEL OTHERS FORWARD
BY JONAS SUN ’25
I began as a volunteer in Hong Kong’s Motor Neuron Disease Association. Motor Neuron Disease, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in the U.S., is a neurodegenerative disease that gradually takes away a patient’s ability to move, speak, and breathe. While volunteering, I learned that one major difficulty for ALS patients is communication. Unable to use body language or their voice, patients can only use eye movements and assistive technology, which has many limitations. While high-tech products are expensive and complicated, low-tech products are slow and require caretaker assistance. To reduce the limitation of current products, I developed Gaze Link — a free, multi-language mobile application for ALS patients to communicate with their eyes efficiently and accurately. The system first detects the user’s eye movements with the phone’s camera. Then, I designed a keyboard and language AI models to convert eye movements into sentences. The user can speak the sentence via the phone speaker or upload it to social media for communication. After performing experiments with 30 participants, Gaze Link was over 7x faster than the traditional lowtech product used in Hong Kong.
I presented Gaze Link at the Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair in March alongside my Webb peers. In May, I advanced to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the largest science competition in the world for high school students. It was an immensely inspiring journey of chatting with other passionate STEM students, listening to talks by Nobel laureates, and even interacting with an astronaut in space. I will always thank Webb for giving me the opportunity to share my project with the world through such science fairs.
On judging day for ISEF, I wore my Webb uniform and walked nervously with the other students to present my project for seven hours. However, once I began to talk and demo Gaze Link to the judges, the nervousness was instantly replaced by excitement and confidence. Regardless of the results, my app will help countless ALS patients with communication and representation in society. When I heard my name for Second Place in the Systems Software category, I was extremely proud to represent Webb and see all my hard work pay off at the end.
After winning a total of $3,400 at ISEF, I donated $1,400 to the ALS Association for medical research and the other $2,000 to Webb. During afternoon activity, Dr. Martin and Ms. Nacionales constantly encouraged and advised me. My classmates and friends were extremely supportive, helping me test the product and providing constructive feedback. Finally, it is Webb’s diverse STEM curriculum from Advanced Studies Anatomy to collaboration with Harvey Mudd College that laid the intellectual foundation for my project. I hope the donation can support other Webb students passionate about research who wish to present their discoveries at future science fairs.

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU
Mabel Hsu ‘01 fondly recalls the transformative experiences she had as a Webb student—teachers and mentors who encouraged her intellectual curiosity, friends who became like family and lifelong companions, and a campus home that nurtured her growth both academically and personally. The school opened her eyes to new perspectives and opportunities, and those years of learning, exploring, and building character stayed with her long after she graduated. This past spring, Mabel joined 566 enthusiastic alumni, parents, parents of alumni, and friends on April 17, 2024 for Webb’s Giving Day. Her gift and pledge of $50,000 on Giving Day in support of The Webb Fund was not just a financial contribution but a heartfelt thank-you to the place that had such a lasting impact on her life, and she hopes her gesture will inspire other alumni to give back in their own ways.
“The Webb Schools provided a welcoming environment for an international student like me and served as a solid launch pad for
my educational experience in the US. I am grateful to be part of the Webb community,” Mabel says.
Mabel and her family currently live in Taiwan, and she is excited to serve as Webb’s Taiwan Regional Representative on the Alumni Council. Mabel remains deeply connected with her classmates and fellow alumni throughout Taiwan and the world. She looks forward to connecting with many other Webbies through her new volunteer role.

Thompson & Vivian Webb Society
THOMPSON & VIVIAN WEBB SOCIETY
At Webb today, as in years past, we educate and inspire young people to act with honor and moral courage in everything they do. This, combined with a drive for academic excellence, provides our moral compass and forms our mission. Webb nurtures smart, curious, and independent-minded students to become bold and courageous leaders.
You can help perpetuate these values by ensuring that we are able to support the best and brightest students without regard to a family’s ability to pay the full cost of tuition. Our mission and our future depend on it.
Webb’s enduring legacy can be your personal legacy when you partner with us to protect and enrich these incredibly important values by including The Webb Schools or the Alf Museum in your philanthropic planning. There are many ways to do so:
• A provision in your will or living trust;
• Beneficiary designation of your IRA, 401(k), or other retirement plan;
• Beneficiary designation of life insurance;
• Charitable trusts;
• Charitable gift annuities.
Please contact the Advancement Office for more information on joining the Thompson & Vivian Webb Society:
Bob Fass Chief Advancement Officer bfass@webb.org (909) 482-5260
The Thompson and Vivian Webb Society was created to recognize alumni, parents and friends who have made an estate commitment or entered into a life-income agreement with The Webb Schools or the Alf Museum.

FROM PECCARY TRIPS TO PATRONAGE: JIM WANG ‘51 SUPPORTS WEBB AND THE ALF MUSEUM
Despite the vast distance of 6,350 miles and a 14-hour flight separating his home from our campus, Jim Wang ‘51 has always held Webb and the Alf Museum close to his heart. In April 2024, Head of School Dr. Theresa Smith, Chief Advancement Officer Bob Fass, and Dean of College Guidance Hector Martinez had the pleasure of reconnecting with Jim in Shanghai, China over a cup of tea and reminiscing about his time at Webb.
Jim spent two years at Webb before continuing his education at Pomona College. Like many alumni, his enduring bond with Webb was forged through shared experiences with his classmates, both big and small. However, one particular memory stands out vividly: during a Peccary trip in July 1950, Jim discovered Linda, a complete brontothere skull and lower jaws of a species called Megacerops coloradensis. This remarkable find fills him with pride, not only for the discovery itself but also for the opportunity to give Linda her name, in honor of his sister. It is still on display in the museum today!
Jim’s connection to the museum has remained strong over the years, and he has developed a close affinity with Dr. Don Lofgren. Reflecting on his Peccary trip experience, Jim recognizes
the Alf Museum as a unique and invaluable resource that must be preserved for future generations. “I remember that Peccary trip as if it were yesterday. It was such an outstanding life experience that helped to fuel my sense for discovery and my drive to pursue opportunities that could pass you by. Webb and the museum changed me, and I’m eternally grateful,” says Jim. During his visit with Dr. Smith, Mr. Fass, and Mr. Martinez, Jim expressed his commitment to supporting the museum’s vital role in paleontology by presenting them with a generous donation.
Dr. Alf often posed the question, “What are you going to do with your moment of time?”
For Jim, his answer lies in the beautiful life he has built, filled with wonderful memories, including those from his time at Webb and the Alf Museum. By supporting the museum with a generous spirit, Jim is ensuring that future generations of Webbies can have the same enriching experiences that he still cherishes more than 70 years later.
If you would like to support the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology or The Webb Schools, please visit webb.org/donate or contact Christine Leible at cleible@webb.org or (909) 482-5277.
