CINCO DE MAYO GRILLED CORN QUICHE

Cinco de Mayo Grilled Corn Quiche

BY CHARLOTTE TAYLOR / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN LABOYTEAUX

CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO WITH THIS FESTIVE SPIN ON A TRADITIONAL FAVORITE.

|  THE WEDDED BLISS  MAY-JUN 2014

It’s so nice to finally see warm, sunny days around here. Cold weather - not a fan. The snow and ice may be beautiful to look at, but for me, bring on the warmth. Whether you’re a fan of the long hot days on our horizon or not, summer time is in fact on its way. Thankfully, summer grill nights take advantage of the lovely temps and are just one of the many perks of the season.

14

One of our favorite things to cook on the grill is corn on the cob. Roasting corn really brings out the yummy sweetness and gives us that extra crunch that we all love. It’s really a great comfort food any time of the year. Another comfort food of ours is quiche, believe it or not. You know the saying, “real men…” Well, our whole family does, and maybe we like it because it’s basically pie, a big ol’ savory pie. Who doesn’t love pie?! There are so many variations of this pie, your options are endless. You don’t have to stick with the basic turkey/swiss or broccoli/ham quiche anymore, spice it up with some south of the border flair. Try the basic quiche filling and add in green chiles and Monterey jack cheese, or how about throwing in some leftover grilled onions, chorizo and a bit of goat cheese. Yum. Combining fresh or leftover grilled foods with everyday meals makes any mealtime extra special by bringing that outdoor flavor in. Our grilled corn quiche does just that. It takes the traditional grilled corn and turns it into a dish with a Spanish flair. It’s a great way to use up any leftover grilled corn you might have, or you can certainly cheat like we did, and roast it on the stove if your grill is not already fired up. What was once a basic

quiche is now festive just by adding some Mexican cheese and spices - perfect for showers, brunches or a relaxed dinner at home. This particular quiche was inspired by a popular Mexican street food called elote, that’s just out of this world. Grilled Mexican corn, covered with butter, lime juice, chili powder, cotija (or parmesan) cheese and a little mayo. Amazing. This grilled corn quiche is great served warm or at room temperature, making it great for buffets and casual dinners, indoors or out.

WHERE BEAUTIFUL FRESH FLOWERS MEET VINTAGE INSPIRATION

Fresh flowers meet vintage inspiration when arriving at Alison Piantanida’s flower shop, The Flower Girl – connected to the antique mall in downtown Tyler. Having become part of the floral world nearly 13 years ago, she had made quite the impact on East Texas with her impeccable taste, creative combinations and friendly personality. Growing up, Alison played around with floral designs, making dried swags, wreaths, homecoming mums, and more. She nurtured her green thumb and hoped to one day learn

otography Allen Arrick Ph

professionally. After raising five children and working odd jobs here and there, she decided that she would follow her dahlia and daisy dreams and enter into floral design. She’s been a wedding day dream weaver ever since. “When I started back in 2000 at Garden Style of Tyler, I was already the ‘old lady’ of the bunch,” she said. “But I found a saying from Mary Englebright that I loved and describes one of my philosophies in life: It’s never too late to be what you might have been.’ And here I am!”

Through The Flower Girl, Alison is a fullservice florist, but her main focus is on weddings and events. She loves to help brides with their flower choices, of course, but also offers any other helpful advice/ideas to help them make their day terrific. She not only offers her brides dozens of beautiful flowers to choose from, but also has the unique ability to pair flowers with unusual/vintage finds from the antique mall that her shop is conveniently connected to.

One thing Alison prides herself on is helping out that bride on a budget.

Brandi Burkett Photography

“My proximity to the antique mall has been a great resource for brides to find interesting items for their reception and wedding décor,” she said. “Creative brides will bring me an old jar or vase or whatever they find on the shelves next door to fill with flowers!” And Alison’s shop is bloomed over with all types of flowers to choose from. She has access to just about any type, as she orders

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind florist, Alison is on top of her game when thinking outside of the box! Alison also suggests: ▪ Use greenery with the flowers to make them appear fuller. There are tons of inexpensive greens that look great with flowers. ▪ Spruce up your reception with more flowers than the wedding itself, as most eyes will be on the bride during the ceremony. ▪ Candles are cheap and they add a lot to the décor – so purchase a few to add to tables

Decorate your wedding and reception with flowers that are in season; while flowers are available year round, they will cost more if they are out of season. “Roses, mums, Gerber daisies, white hydrangeas, and lilies are pretty much year round flowers, as well as gladiolas and iris,” Alison added. But for those brides who want other options, Alison offered a break down: ▪ In the Spring- tulips, daffodils, rannaculas are readily available, as well as anemones and viburnum and lilacs. ▪ Early summer is great for hydrangeas in all different colors, as well as peonies.. In the late summer, dahlias start to come in season, and sunflowers and heather work their way into fall. Snowberries are also popular in the fall, though they are commonly associated with winter. ▪ In winter, amaryllis, star of Bethlehem and winter greens are in full bloom, and the peony makes a brief return. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind florist, Alison is on top of her game when thinking outside of the box! “We have Pinterest today – what can I say?” She mused. “I love to get creative with a long table runner of flowers, or decorating with lanterns and other vintage items. Boxwood wreaths are great for centerpieces or for sprucing up the ends of the church pews, too!” A really unusual centerpiece she recalls was flowers in purples, roses, kale, lisianthus and trichillium arranged in a trifle dish that was filled with vintage buttons. She also designed an arrangement of flowers in a large square vase filled with lemons and a manzanita branch bursting out with little flower clusters and prisms hanging from the branches. For a woman who has always loved flowers, Alison is following her dream. She

hopes to help, encourage, support and inspire brides to be not only in person, but through her online blog, Petals Plates & Parties. “My blog features some of my weddings, table settings, recipes and parties/showers I have thrown or assisted with,” she said. “I love entertaining, throwing parties and cooking, so the blog is about that, as well as decorating and personal stories.” For your wedding day blooms, Alison’s, The Flower Girl has the variety and the creativity that any bride could want! through wholesale brokers. Her flowers come from all over the world, from the jungles of South America to the fauna of New Zealand. You name it, The Flower Girl can get it … providing you allow Alison four to six months – a good rule of thumb for contacting your wedding florist. One thing Alison prides herself on is helping out that bride on a budget. With five children – three of them girls – she knows that cutting corners – while keeping quality – is a must. “The biggest tip I can give my brides is this: Have as many things as possible do ‘double duty’ on your big day,” she said. This means use your bridesmaids bouquets as reception centerpieces and let your blooming plants, such as tulips, double as gifts to loved ones.

A BEAUTY ADDICT’S INPUT ON MAKE UP, STYLE & WELLNESS

|  THE WEDDED BLISS  MAY-JUN 2014

Dear Von,

26

I recently lost a significant amount of weight and I’m anxious to show it off! However, I’m feeling like most of the gowns I’ve tried on highlight my least favorite body feature, my arms. Dresses with sleeves make me feel older and aren’t as flattering as I want them to be. Is there a certain design that would be flattering to me? I desperately want to show off my new fit figure, but I don’t feel confident with bare arms. I’ll be doing push-ups until I hear from you… - AlixVega Dear Alix,

Congratulations on your weight loss! Even at our ideal weight, we often have one body part or another that we are not crazy about. At the risk of going into motivational speech territory, I encourage you to focus on all the things you love about your new figure and don’t let those old insecurities eat away at your current joy. Moving on to solutions…

1.

COLOR

Long gone are the days of exclusively white wedding gowns. It’s becoming more common to see gowns with various bits of color. Whether it’s a colored bit of lace or a dramatic belt to emphasize your marvelous midsection, color is a great way to distract. With strategic color placement near your best bits, no one will take note of the ‘nonhighlighted areas’ if you will.

have crystals, rhinestones or other embellishments. Instead, choose fabrics that absorb light such as toole or a cotton lace. Some types of silks such as dupioni or shantung are also good candidates.

VON’S VICE: The best way to get an idea of how your dress will photograph with professional equipment is to take an image of the dress in maximum natural light with a flash. This will flood the dress with light and give you an idea of how that material will look under the scrutiny of today’s modern camera. Note how the fabrication on the sleeves responds. Does it absorb the light? Does it look shiny?

Amara by Sottero & Midgley Paired with Purple Sash

There are three things to consider when choosing a gown that emphasizes your goodies: color, fabrication & cut.

2.

FABRICATION

It’s a cornerstone in the design world but it often overlooked by the everyday wedding gown buyer: Fabrication is everything! Steer clear of heavy satins or polished cottons near your arm area. These types of fabrics will attract the light from your photographers flash and will look like runners reflectors in your pictures. Avoid sleeve styles that

Alix, I know you aren’t crazy about your arms, but what features do you love? Think about this while you’re trying on dresses. Have a great waist? Seek out a defined midsection or vintage belt. Love your calves? Try on tea length dresses that will let you show them off. Relax, this is the fun part! Focus on what you want to stand out and you’re sure to feel your best on your wedding day.

Peace & Lipstick,

VON’S VICE: The idea here is to tell your audience where to look. Accessories were invented to draw the attention of the viewer. Use colorful necklaces, bracelets and cuffs, broaches and belts to serve your needs. No one notices your upper arms when a bodacious ruby bracelet is stealing the show.

VON’S VICE: Take some of the pressure off and go try on formal gowns, not just wedding gowns. Take a camera, proper undergarments, and a friend. Take pics of everything! Afterwards, go through the pics and decide which cuts you find most flattering. Keep the images of your top choices and show them to your bridal consultants at your wedding dress appointments. This will help you identify your ideal cut and it will help your consultant meet your needs.

Janelle by Maggie Sottero

3.

CUT

I wish the solution was as simple as , ‘…a boatneck is the best way to distract from your upper arms…’ but dress styles are more complex than that. Not to diminish your woes, but your trouble area may be exclusive to the way you see yourself. I might look at you and see something totally different than what you perceive. You’ve got to find the cut that you think looks great on you.

A couple of years ago, while in college, I tried to propose to my then boyfriend Ryan, with a Cracker Jack ring. He said no, of course! A few years later, Ryan sent me all around Denton, Texas to the places that were most important to us with a series of clues planted and filmed by our

best friends. The last clue led me to the downtown square where he had a surprise picnic that included a very special box of Cracker Jacks. I’m sure you can guess what the prize was! It was such a memorable day and I know everyone had a blast! There were even

people who didn’t know us picnicking on the square who waited to congratulate us. One nice family even let our friends hide in the crowd as part of my surprise. Musicians playing on the square inadvertently helped set the mood!

BREGAN HEFFENTRAGER and BRYAN BROWN In February 2013, I decided to take my fiancé, Bregan, to Cozumel, Mexico on vacation. She later told me that she had never been outside of the country and in passing, told me she never knew anyone who had gotten engaged outside of the United States. Months went by and I started to think about several proposal ideas and what I would like to do when the time came. I finally decided that Cozumel should be the place. In May, I started looking for a ring (which we had done together a couple of times so I could have some ideas), and finally at a local jewelry store I found what I thought was her perfect ring. She is a very easy to please person, and didn’t want anything extravagant, but I on the other hand like unique and flashy things. Being a biologist and lover of nature, the Parade Designs Lyria Leaves Ring was what I wanted. I called Mr. Gordon, the jeweler and discussed the ring and fortunately he had one

in stock. June arrived and I booked our trip, some scuba dives, and talked two of our good friends into going with us. (I hadn’t told them the plan yet). In July, I finalized all the plans and put them together printed in a binder I leave at work. I also kept track of an outline so that I didn’t leave anything out. In August, she joined a research group that was traveling to South Africa for a study on archeology and wildlife. This was the time I made everything a reality. While she was gone, I discussed the plans with the resort so they were on board. I also discussed it with our dive boat leader and my two friends that were going. I called Mr. Gordon again and hit my first snag. The ring we had discussed was the incorrect model! We put in an urgent request to find one and were not having any luck. The best option was to factory order one which was going to take 5 weeks. We were uncertain

as to whether or not it would arrive in time, so I started making backup plans. One was to buy a cheap ring, propose, and change it out later. The other was to change rings all together. I’m very stubborn, so I wasn’t going to give up without a fight. I really wanted her to have that ring so I combed the internet, jewelry stores,

final touches. It was finally time to make everything happen. On September 6, we left out of DFW. I put all the proposal information in my computer bag with the ring and didn’t let it out of my sight. Upon arriving in Mexico, I didn’t claim my

bags right away and kept distance between us, so that if I got checked and had to pull items out, she wouldn’t catch me! We got settled in the resort and enjoyed the evening. The next morning we geared up and got on the boat. We were on the boat with 8 new divers who obviously didn’t know my plan. They talked our captain into going to a coral wall site but my good friend Scott pulled our dive master aside and reminded him of our plan. We had been hyping the shipwreck up for 2 months to make it seem like the greatest dive spot and even told Bregan that people have found treasure there, hinting at the engagement. He discussed with the captain and told us we were going to do a “private” dive. It was very rainy and windy so we felt like Navy Seals trying to gear up and get into the water. Once we were in the water, we descended down and explored our way to the ship. We went all through the ship prior to the proposal. Bregan was loving it and enjoying the diving while having no clue what was in store for her! About 40 minutes into the dive, my friends were getting low on air and motioned that it was time. We exited the wreck from the middle and I called everyone to the front. Other divers were on the bridge so they got to watch. I called her up front and tried to distract her, while giving my good friend Robert my camera. My other friend Scott was shooting video on his camera so she thought I was setting up a picture, but then I confused her by pulling the laminated pages from my gear. She started reading them and a couple of moments later, it clicked. She finished reading and I got down on one knee, and asked her to marry me. She

barely could keep the regulator in her mouth! She removed her glove, I slipped on the ring, and we kissed! We shook hands with everyone, then surfaced. On the boat she couldn’t stop shaking from excitement. Not only did she have an amazing first ocean water wreck dive, it was the most memorable dive ever. We will be married September 11, 2014 in Manteo, North Carolina at 108 Budleigh with the reception to follow at the Elizabethan Gardens. It will be a weeklong celebration that will include diving, relaxing, and joining my best friend in a bond for the rest of our lives.

and every back channel idea I could think of. I even had a man look into duplicating it for me. I was about to go ahead with the factory order when Mr. Gordon called and said he found one and it was being shipped to his store. He felt it could arrive in time for him to have the stone set before we were going to leave on our trip. When it was all said and done, he had it to me earlier than expected which made my next step even better. I finally showed my mom the ring and she fell in love. I had not yet told her my plan and she said that I couldn’t have found a better woman. Next, I called Bregan’s parents. I waited until one week before time to leave primarily because her mom is not good at keeping secrets. Luckily both her mom and dad were home (he travels a lot with his job). I asked to speak to both of them via Facetime and discussed the trip. I followed it up with “While we are down there, I have an idea,” and showed them the ring. The frozen look of excitement on her moms face was awesome! They were both proud, happy, and excited for us. Oh, and they kept it a secret for me, too. I spent the next day typing all the words I would have said if we had been on land, and laminating three copies of them so that I could take them underwater with me. I had spent three months writing them out and editing them. They just needed the

In addition, the 2,000-square-foot covered pavilion area with chandelier lighting, beautiful landscaping, and a giant stone fireplace is the perfect place for an intimate wedding ceremony. The Reserve is also available for class reunions, corporate functions, proms, birthday and graduation parties. Debi Johnston 903-431-3496 Terry Edney, Owner 903-720-4295
