now that you’ve finally landed a great guy, you thought that the hard part was over, right? Wrong. Now you have a wedding to plan! That’s when a wedding coordinator can be a real godsend.

EAST TEXAS WEDDING COORDINATORS WEIGH IN ON CURRENT TRENDS AND OFFER ADVICE FOR YOUR SPECIAL DAY
Some of the newest trends I am really excited about are the use of really loud, bold colors and bouquets made with anything but flowers. Another trend is the use of extraordinary photography shots from the engagement to the honeymoon. Brides are also having food trucks of favorite restaurants cater their weddings and they are also incorporating unique desserts that replace or

compliment their wedding cake. Photo booths are becoming a must-have at all weddings to give the guests an interactive experience and something the bride and groom can cherish forever. Making the day a reflection of the bride and groom is really the key to having the best day EVER!
One area I help my brides focus on is custom details. Whether or not you have a planner to help keep things organized for you, I advise creating at least five small visual impact moments for the photographer to capture. Anything from vintage ring boxes to handmade garlands
and monogram letters will do the trick. Pre-planning these details will give your design the most bang for your buck, even if your budget does not allow you to outfit the entire venue with elaborate decor, from floor to ceiling.

WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE MONEY-SAVING TIP FOR COUPLES ON A TIGHT BUDGET?
WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU GIVE ALL YOUR BRIDES WHEN THEY’RE FEELING OVERWHELMED? Hiring a certified wedding planner to coordinate your wedding offers a great degree of freedom for a couple and their families from feeling stressed or overwhelmed. My most recent client said when she finished signing her contract with me, “I feel better already!” However, should my brides start feeling a bit overwhelmed by the wedding process we often put away the
wedding decisions that are causing stress and revisit them a little later. I will often advise my brides to just think about the ideas for now and we can talk about and decide them later when the decision can be a pleasant and joyous experience instead of a stressful one.
DIY (do it yourself) is the obvious answer for the design. Research online thru Pinterest, Facebook, wedding websites, looking through magazines, and checking out books from the library…there are millions of ideas. Choose just enough to make the right statement for your style and use what you already have or have access to. Enlist help! If you have creative and talented people who offer to help, put them to work for you and designate. Be specific!
Most importantly though, establish a realistic budget and stick to it. Pay cash as you go and do not finance your wedding. The wedding day is only the first day of your marriage and you don’t want to be paying for it for years to come. Decide what’s really important to you from the start. BONUS: A great planner will save you many hours and many dollars!

I was recently visiting with a fellow wedding vendor about the different ways we perceive weddings. For most brides, this is their first time being the star of the show. For us, the experience is familiar and predictable. In the spirit of New Year’s resolutions, here are my top five things every bride should know to have a beautiful wedding. Take note, ladies.

FOR CREATING THE WEDDING OF YOUR DREAMS

BE COMFORTABLE IN YOUR OWN SKIN
18
As an esthetician, I don’t advocate tanning. The damages far outweigh the benefits and with other options such as spray tanning, it seems like an obvious choice to steer clear of damaging UV rays. If you’re addicted to the bed, make sure your final tan is no more than 48 hours before the wedding. Recent sun exposure can make sun spots and freckles more pronounced while creating a red tone rather than the bronze you’re craving. In my experience, people don’t realize how dark/red they look when tanning regularly. I have never known a bride to look at her wedding photographs and say, “Gosh, I should have tanned one more time before the wedding.” Trust me, if you’re hitting a tanning bed on a regular basis, you are tan enough!
CHANGE YOUR PERCEPTION When being photographed by a professional, it’s not about how you look in person, but rather how you look to the camera. As a rule, you will photograph two shades lighter than you look in person. This means your eyeshadow, lip color, and cheek color should all be more pronounced than usual. This is not to say that you must be uber glamour in order to look good on film. But know that when you see a model in a magazine who looks natural, in reality she has a full face of make up. Trust your professional make up artist to make you look like the best version of yourself.
GET A BEAUTY TRIAL RUN
TAKE A PICTURE & GIVE FEEDBACK A trial run is your chance to experience your wedding look before your big day. Often brides see beauty looks online or in magazines they think they want. However, your facial features and your hair type are completely unique. Just because your beauty team gives you Taylor
Swift hair and make up does not mean you will look in the mirror to see Taylor Swift staring back at you. When you’re all dolled up after your trial run, take a picture of yourself with a camera that has a flash. It’s not the same as a professional camera, but it will give you a rough idea of how your look will fare on camera.
Giving feedback to your beauty team such as, “...after 2 hours, all those bobby pins were driving me crazy!” or “I think the smoky eye together with the hot pink lip was too dramatic for my afternoon wedding,” can be the difference between enjoying your wedding day or being miserable.
PEACH FUZZ SOUNDS CUTELOOKS AWFUL Excessive facial hair makes it difficult for even the best skin to look smooth and radiant. This is especially true for people with acne or hyperpigmentation issues. Even the best make up applied over an abundance of vellus or baby hairs looks heavy or ‘caked’ on. Powder sticks to the peach fuzz and highlights the hairs and imperfections. Razors, lasers, and wax can be uncomfortable and can have a laundry list of side effects. I recommend a women’s electric shaver, available at any drug store. It’s not sexy. It’s effective. This method cuts the hairs close to the skin with minimal risk of irritation. Using an electric razor on the ‘bearded’ area is safe for all skin types and can be done right before a make up application.
BE NICE TO YOUR MOTHER Weddings are emotional for all involved. I’ve had to help more than one Mom fight back the tears during a make up application. Whether
the tears spring from joy or are squeezed out from the vice grip of stress, they are all indicative of heavy emotions. Take a moment to recognize the matriarchs in your life and what a powerful moment this is for them, too. Never mind the beautiful flowers or the perfect plum colored linens you found. When people think back on your wedding day, they will remember how they felt. Treat your Mom with kindness and an extra dose of love. It’s likely she’s riding this emotional wave with you.

CREATING BEAUTIFUL WEDDING CAKES THAT TASTE AS GOOD AS THEY LOOK
24
“D’Anne McCune has one mission – to create the most beautiful and elaborate custom cakes that taste as great as they look” A delightful and delicious cake is the ultimate way to end a wonderful wedding and offers the bride another way to show her personal style. There are as many cake designs as there are wedding gowns, and it pays to do research before making a choice. At Designs by D’Anne in Jacksonville, longtime artist D’Anne McCune has one mission – to create beautiful and elaborate custom cakes that taste as great as they look. She doesn’t just bake cakes, she is an artist who creates. “I have been fascinated with decorated cakes since I was a child,” D’Anne says. “I am an artist and have an extensive background in painting and designing. To me, cakes are like a blank canvas ready to be
designed into a one-of-a-kind work of art.” Now in her 30th year of cake decorating, D’Anne says business is booming now more than ever. “For the first 22 years in business, I split my time between canvas painting, murals, working as a contract artist and doing all types of decorated cakes,” she says. “Eight years ago I opened my bakery just to the wedding business and it has grown beyond anything I could ever imagine. My business has grown each year!” Her favorite aspect of her “job” is seeing the excitement on brides’ faces when they get a glimpse of their tiered treats. “Brides are happy, fun and full of excitement about

their upcoming wedding. What could be better than dealing with happy people?” she asks. “ The most unique thing about the wedding cake business is that we are dealing with the most important day in the life of the bride so the pressure is on to make them as happy as possible.” Her cakes elegantly translate the personality and attitude of her brides. “I create customized cakes that reflect the bride’s taste and personality and are totally delicious. Our cakes not only please the eye they also please the dessert palette of the guests attending the wedding,” she adds. D’Anne invites brides to make cake consultation and tasting visits on Tuesdays by appointment only. “When brides make an appointment at Designs By D’Anne they can expect one-on-one attention, a cake tasting with great tasting cakes and a cake design that meets their wishes,” she says. “Styrofoam cake layers are arranged to provide approximate size and shape of the cake to help the brides envision their actual cake.” She wants to keep her bakery environment conducive to providing that one-on-one attention that is so important in making cake designing fun, exciting and successful. After all, brides are the reason for her business. “I have done some truly unique cakes that have often been reproduced by other designers. When I designed my daughter’s wedding cake using Swarovski Crystal spacers and stand it was a one of a kind,” she says. “I am now seeing designers on TV use this same design.” For more information on how D’Anne can transform your dream cake into a reality, visit her on her web site or give her a call today.

CATERING IMPOSSIBLE | BY AMANDA RETALLACK
PERFECT CATERING ACCEPTS THE MISSION TO FEED THE CAST OF FOOD NETWORK’S RESTAURANT IMPOSSIBLE
A
film crew from The Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible,” a show that helps struggling eateries turn their problems into profits, recently came to rescue a downtown Kilgore restaurant, Nanny Goats. When The Food Network began planning the trip to East Texas, a local catering company and The Wedded Bliss advertiser, Perfect Catering of Longview, was given the opportunity to be part of the project. Perfect Catering Event Coordinator Lori Valenti was eager to take on the task. “The network representatives found my business on the internet. They were looking for a full-service caterer with a wide variety menu,” Lori recalled. “They asked us to put some menus together for the three days they would be shooting and wanted us to ‘wow’ them. We sent the menus over via email and they called us the next day and said ‘absolutely love the menus, you’re hired!’” The mood was exciting and there was energy in the air as her catering company prepped and then served the crew during the three days of filming. “Everyone was excited to be a part of a national TV show,” she said. Lori herself was even a bit star-struck. “I had the opportunity to speak with Tom Bury, the construction star on the show. He was very friendly and I was told that he went back for second and third helpings of our food,” she said. “He told me how great it was to not have the ‘normal’
catered food they often get. Chef Robert Irvine was, of course, very busy but we did have the opportunity to speak with him briefly and have a photo taken.” Lori and company catered a total of seven meals for this big-name client including pork tenderloin with a peach chipotle sauce and chutney rice, cornmeal buns with pulled Texas brisket, black eyed pea caviar and homemade red potato salad. They also served a southwest breakfast, complete with cream cheese muffins and fresh fruit. When she’s not catering to the Hollywood stars, Lori and the staff at Perfect Catering, who are going on their eighth year in business, enjoy helping brides feel like stars on their wedding days. “We are in the celebration business! It’s so exciting to be with people as they celebrate weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and more. I love seeing all the ideas people bring to their events and I especially enjoy working with a bride from beginning to end,” she said. “I love a beautiful party!” In planning a wedding, Lori enjoys listening to the bride’s dream and turning it into a reality. “We will listen to your ideas and understand the vision that you have for your wedding. This way we can offer you a customized menu and services that fit the need and also work to keep within an attainable budget,” she said. “Every bride and every wedding are different;
therefore, we get to know our client’s needs and work to give them a unique event.” On the wedding day, Lori’s team brings their best so that brides can feel confident that their day will be perfect. “When you are planning a wedding, you have a lot of details on your mind and you want someone that you trust to bring their ‘A Game’ to your wedding. Our staff is professional and friendly and they all work very hard to give our clients their best,” Lori said. Perfect Catering provides menu planning, a large variety of menu choices, available service staff, full set up services, complimentary cake cutting, coordinating services and specialty linens. The menu styles can be buffet, seated served or hors d’oeuvres. In the last 2 years, Perfect Catering has continued to grow with four chefs and a fulltime baker. They cater thousands of events each year, from as small as ten guests to serving over a thousand people at one event. Their services have expanded to accommodate the growing needs of brides, corporate and individual clients. “We have the combined experience of handling more than 500 weddings in our time. With that experience, we are able to educate our clients on how to have a successful event,” Lori said. “You don’t get a ‘do over’ with a wedding. We strive to live up to our name, Perfect Catering. We believe in setting the bar high and striving for excellence.”

The holidays have flown by and a New Year is upon us. If you survived with your sanity intact, then it’s time for new dreams, new adventures and new beginnings. Opportunities for gathering with friends and family will never end, but keeping the stress out of the kitchen should be top priority. Whether you’re celebrating a victory or a holiday, feeding a handful or a herd, making easy and delicious treats will give you something to cheer about. One great crowd pleaser is a Muffaletta.
NEW ORLEANS MUFFALETTAS It’s as easy as it is delicious and it becomes more scrumptious hours after you’ve made it. SCORE! The Muffaletta originated many years ago among Italian immigrants in New Orleans. Traditionally, it’s made with an Italian loaf bread (similar to focaccia) sliced in half, covered with an olive spread and layered with
assorted meats and cheeses. We’ve always been flexible with ours and just added our favorites; it’s very forgiving. This sandwich can be heated to soften and warm the cheese or served cold. We also make our own olive spread because we’ve loved this classic sandwich long before that was readily available. Feel free to make ours or purchase your favorite brand. The good thing about making your own olive spread is that it allows you to see exactly what all goes into it. It’s easy to make, super yummy, and is what makes this “sandwich” more than just a sandwich. Want to make a submarine sandwich style Muffaletta? Use a loaf of French bread. What better way to feed a hungry crowd! It’s perfect to make ahead and pack up for that long car ride, sporting event or picnic. For a more festive gathering, why not make little individual ones by using small hard rolls from the bakery section of the grocery store. They can be made ahead and kept in the fridge until game time or
heated up when ready to serve. Whether you want them hot or cold you just can’t go wrong with this classic New Orleans staple!

Remember, this will get better if it sits awhile. The sandwich can be eaten cold, heated in the microwave or wrapped with foil and baked for about 30 minutes in a 300 degree oven to give the bread a little more crunch. Slice with a serrated knife to serve.
Nothing says game time like eating something fried… yummy, crunchy and soothing to the soul. However, if you want to add a little “froof” to your party try frying up some goat cheese. These little treats are yummy as appetizers, a side to a salad, or if you’re like me, you would eat ‘em for breakfast.

A great sidekick to your Classic Muffaletta is Beer-Cheese Dip. Whether you enjoy beer or not, this just screams cold weather and football. It’s a corn chips best friend! A hearty beer works best for this dip - don’t waste your time using a lite beer. We used a Wheat Ale and it was delicious, but any full flavored Ale or Lager would work just fine.
