Dreaming of warmer and brighter days, or wish you could exchange the brown and gray scenery for some color? I don’t know about you, but my heart sings when barren flower beds return to their former glory and those tiny lime green buds show up on the trees again. It’s such

a breath of fresh air when spring returns, I am always ready for it. If you need a little boost getting into the spring mode, a lemony dessert might be the ticket to speed that process along. Lemony desserts are great spring comfort foods. Especially a lemon chiffon cake. They are so light and fluffy, and easier to whip up than you might think. It will bring that warm yellowy sunshine right into the depths of your soul. A combination of an angel food cake and a regular batter cake, a chiffon cake uses vegetable oil instead of butter (the traditional fat used in cake making). Since it is difficult to beat air into oil, chiffon cakes, like angel food cakes, get their fluffy texture by folding in a lot of beaten egg whites. Chiffon cakes can also be baked into any shape. A Bundt pan, tube pan, muffin pan, or in rounds as a layered cake – just don’t use nonstick pans. Chiffon cakes need to ‘climb’ the sides, so DO NOT grease any pans you use for this type of cake. If the sides are slick, the cake can’t climb and you’ll be left with a not so pretty cake. You can be just as creative when serving this sweet bit of sunshine. Dust with powdered sugar, drizzle with a lemony glaze, ice with buttercream, or top with a dollop of whipped cream. Whether you’re planning a menu for an upcoming spring gathering, need a cake for a bridal shower or ladies tea, a lemon chiffon cake just might hit the spot.

WHAT YOU NEED: • 8 eggs, at room temperature, separated • ¼ cup canola oil • 2 tablespoons lemon juice – freshly squeezed • 1 tablespoon lemon zest • 1/3 cup water • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar • 1 ½ cup granulated sugar • 1 ¾ cup cake flour • ½ teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon kosher salt • lemon curd or icing – homemade or store bought, optional • Yield – this recipe fills 3 round 8 inch baking pans WHAT TO DO: 1. Preheat oven to 325. Place racks on lower part of the oven. Prepare baking pans by covering the bottoms with parchment paper. Do not use any non-stick spray or butter. Just line with parchment. Set aside. 2. In a medium bowl, combine 8 egg yolks, oil, lemon juice, zest and water and whisk well. In a separate medium bowl, sift 1 cup of granulated sugar,

JENNA FLOWERS AND HUNTER COVIN It all started on January 9, 2014 when we were on our way to Bossier City, Louisiana to see my absolute favorite country singer, George Strait. We were in Waskom when Hunter told me that he needed to stop at the gas station. As we exited, I noticed a state trooper, pulled off at the exit. As we passed him, he began to follow us over the bridge and then turned on his lights to pull us over. We proceeded to the gravel parking area and stopped. The state trooper came to the window and introduced himself and began stating his reasons for pulling us over. He explained, “Sir, we had a call in with a description of a vehicle matching your truck that has been swerving all over the road. I am going to need you to step out of the vehicle and come to the back with me, please.” Hunter kindly obeyed the officer but I knew we were not swerving all over the road and that they must have the wrong truck. Two or three minutes passed and the officer tapped on my window. I rolled it down not knowing what was going on. The trooper asked, “Ma’am where are ya’ll headed tonight?” I answered that we were on our way to a George Strait concert. He quickly replied back and said there were a lot of people headed out that way and I said “Yes, sir.”

I was still sitting in the truck and am unsure anything could have prepared me for what the state trooper was going to say next. With a firm face, he said “Ma’am your boyfriend has been doing something for a while that you need to be aware of. I don’t want to be the one to tell you, I think he should, so why don’t you go ahead and step down and come to the back of the vehicle with me.” By this point my heart was pounding and I didn’t know what to think! The only thing I could think was that he had gotten in trouble hunting since he’d planned to go duck hunting that morning. As I reached the back of the truck, I kept my distance. The trooper told Hunter “Mr. Covin, why don’t you go ahead and tell her what you have been up to. I don’t want to be the one to tell her. I think it would be best if you did.” Then there was silence. I spoke up and asked “Hunter what’s going on?” He looked at me for a moment and then said, “Baby there is something I have been meaning to tell you for a long time.” Then he knelt down on one knee, pulled a black box out of his pocket and said “Will you marry me?” With a sigh of relief, and teary eye, I happily said “Yes!”

Dear Von, My wedding is coming up this March and this frigid winter has made my usually dry skin worse than ever. When I wear foundation, my face feels better but the texture looks worse. What can I do on my wedding day to make my skin look normal?

Dear Dry Damsel,

Dry is one of the toughest skin challenges for a make up artist to face. I often tell my clients, I can cover, correct or alter anything as long as it’s hydrated. Dry skin acts like a magnet; attracting excess product and unwanted attention to fine lines and blemishes which are usually the areas you want to camouflage the most. The trick is to start treating your skin well in advance of your big day so you can focus on all the other fun details of the best day of your life!

LET FOOD BE YOUR MEDICINE Your skin is a unique organ in that it’s formed from the inside out. Aleopathic and homeopathic medicine agree that the most powerful changes you can make

in your skin’s appearance begin with your diet. Load up your plate with ‘good fats’ such as omega3’s found in broiled or baked fish. Power foods such as blueberries, raspberries and avocados are also known for their fabulous facial benefits. Switch your canola and vegetable oils and chemical laden non-stick cooking sprays out for extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil.

a quality fish oil supplement of coconut oil in capsule form to your morning routine to help boost you intake of healthy fats for a more profound moisturizing effect. Beware of foods that are robbing your skin of hydration. Your most notorious robbers include caffeine, regular and diet sodas and sugary foods.

EXFOLIATE BEFORE YOU HYDRATE Even the most expensive, advanced moisturizers available won’t work if you don’t exfoliate first. You are wasting your money if you are packing a hydrator on top of dead skin. I highly recommend a Clarisonic or comparable sonic cleansing device. This technology has come a long way and makes for a fool proof exfoliation. Also, don’t use a cleanser when you wash your face in the morning. Assuming you thoroughly cleansed and exfoliated the previous night, simply rinsing your face with tepid water in the morning should be adequate. Over cleansing can strip your skin or the protective oils and lipids that your dry skin needs to recover.

After all, weddings are fun! “We want to provide as much and do as much as we can so that our brides, grooms, mothers, family, and wedding party are able to have fun, enjoy the night and remember it all,” she said. “We don’t want anyone looking back at their wedding day or any event and say they couldn’t enjoy it because they were working too hard!”

A must-have for many bride’s is the Bride’s Room, and Villa di Felicitá has one of the finest. “We have a very large Bride’s Room with a platform, full-length corner mirror area so they can see themselves in their lovely dresses! STAR COLLEGE Star College of Cosmetology is located in Tyler at the intersection of Front Street and Beckham and has been operating since 1991. Star College prides itself in turning out professional hairstylists, nail technicians, and estheticians. All Star College of Cosmetology students receive extensive training in theory and practical applications, prior to working with clients on the clinic floor. While students are working on clients they are watched by a licensed instructor to ensure each client receives full individual attention. All cosmetology students are able to do fashionable hairstyles and haircuts, while our nail technicians improve their skills of performing exceptional manicures and pedicures, as well as acrylic nails. In addition, Star College has an esthetic spa division that offers spa facials, chemical peels, and a variety of other spa treatments for a relaxing experience. Cosmetology students are trained in hairstyling, haircutting, coloring techniques, and a wide variety of hair services. When first entering into cosmetology school, all students spend 8 weeks in concentrated studies that includes

theory knowledge of hair, chemicals, and techniques. Cosmetology students will then be promoted to the sophomore department where they spend another 8 weeks perfecting all their skills on models. After 16 weeks of training, cosmetology students are promoted to the clinic floor to work on clients to ensure they have all the necessary skills to perform salon quality services to the Star College clientele. These students spend a total of 1,500 hours in training to become professional stylists to then gain employment in salons and spas.

TAMMY GREENE Tammy Greene provided the make-up for our fashion show models. She is an East Texas based hair and make up stylist who has been in the business for 30 years. Tammy has 8 year's experience with airbrush makeup and is an experienced colorist. She also specializes in hair extensions. She will work on site or in a salon. Tammy has also helped The Wedded Bliss with several front cover brides preparing them for our photo shoots.
