FROM LETTER EDITOR THE
T
he Wedded Bliss was started in 2004 after a close friend and co-worker, Allison got married in Cancun. She came to see me to share her beautiful sunset beach wedding pictures. The photographs were so striking with vibrant colors and truly showed the beauty of the ceremony. When I asked her if she was going to put the pictures in the newspaper, she exclaimed, “No, do you know how much that costs for just one Sunday?” From that comment and that moment, the wheels began turning in my head and the concept was born. I wanted to create an affordable way for brides to announce their engagement and wedding in a full color magazine. I also wanted brides to have a wonderful keepsake of their engagement and wedding day.
Every issue is unique and created with new engaged couples and brides. It is an exciting time for these young ladies and the families they create. The wedding day is one of the most memorable times and should never be forgotten. We want to be known as the publication that was able to recreate and share in that day for those who attended and those who were not able to share in the day. Our 50th front cover bride, Samantha Symbalisty Duvall is the third sister to grace our cover. The Symbalisty family has featured all three of their daughters in The Wedded Bliss. Thank you Symbalisty family! I thank God for our success. I thank our readers for their continued support. I thank our brides for choosing The Wedded Bliss to announce their special day. The magazine was created for you, the bride, to always have a beautiful keepsake to treasure. As time goes on you will look back at your announcement in the future to reminisce; either with your husband, with friends, by yourself or with your children. It will take you back to that very day and you will remember and smile. That is my dream for each of you. Thank you to my wonderful staff, loving and supportive family and friends. You help make this all worthwhile.
THANK YOU - SANDRA MCNEESE Owner, Editor
MAR-APR 2012 THE WEDDED BLISS |
It’s hard to believe 50 issues have been printed. The magazine has turned into much more than my original expectations. It’s a complimentary beautiful book that also serves as a directory for venues, catering, music and many other services. Bi-monthly 20,000 copies are distributed to all of East Texas.

helpful apps for planning your wedding
| THE WEDDED BLISS MAR-APR 2012
Every season is wedding season, and if you’re in the process of planning for your big day it may be helpful to know that help can be found at the push of a button — on your phone! You can throw away all of those folders, binders and wedding planner phone numbers. Now all you need is right at your fingertips. Whether you have an iPhone, iPad, Android or other, this list is sure to help you make it down the aisle in style.

My wedding concierge When you think “concierge,” you think of someone that will help make your life a little easier. This little app was designed just for that purpose! It’s a wedding app and a search engine all in one. The search engine feature is great! For example, if you type in “wedding colors pink and brown,” with the click of a button you’ll be whisked away into a land of pinks and browns with photos that are sure to inspire. If you don’t know exactly what you want, a convenient little “Trends” button allows you to see what’s hot at the moment, from peacock feathers to DIY guestbooks.
wedding budget If you need a straightforward budgeting app to keep track of the long list of costs, down payments, deposits and final finances — and how much money you have left for that all-important honeymoon, Wedding Budget is a great app to keep on your smartphone. It breaks down costs into categories such as bridal attire, bridal party attire, flowers, cake, photography and so on. It also offers up a nicely color-coded pie chart to show you how much money is allocated to each category.
wedding scan There are a few perks to getting married besides spending the rest of your life with the man you love, and one of those perks is registering! Gone are the days when you can only go to three to five department stores and retailers. With Wedding Scan, you can register for anything anywhere. This app lets you scan any barcode from any store into your phone and create a centralized registry on WeddingScan.com. From there, your friends and family can visit the site and either order a gift from one of the countless vendors on Amazon.com or retail stores such as Target and Dillards, or choose to pick up the item later in the store itself.
shazaM What is Shazam, you may ask ? Let’s say you’re out with the girls at a restaurant, and you hear a song that you like but you don’t know its name. Shazam it! Shazam is a handy little app that can help you identify the name of a song, along with telling you the artist’s name, the album the song is from, lyrics, artist tour information, YouTube videos, and so on. Basically, an app that everyone should have — especially for those looking to fill up their wedding reception playlists.
colorscheMer Here’s another app you don’t have to be planning a wedding to enjoy — but it definitely helps the pickiest of planners. Download this app, and a kaleidoscope
of colors are at your fingertips. All you have to do is take a photo of an item you find and this app will show you a color scheme AND give you the Pantone number to send to your designer or wedding planner. Also, there is access to thousands of color schemes and message boards. Get social and chat with other color lovers about favorite palettes!
facebook Next time you update your status, why not try one of these Facebook applications to help you plan your big day? What is Your Wedding Song? - Find out which song best suits your mood and personality. From Nat King Cole to Harry Connick Jr., answer a few questions to see which tune fits you best. Wedding Tip of the Day – You can choose from eight different wedding tip styles that you think will help you best in planning your big day! When the wedding pressure starts to overwhelm or you just want to play around with some fun apps, whip out your smartphone and let it help you plot and plan your perfect day!

Areli and Alan went to see the North Carolina Symphony in Raleigh on New Year’s Eve. What a night full of glamour! Opera, classic music… They began walking through the crowds in downtown Raleigh to await the New Year’s Eve celebration countdown. It was getting very crowded and Areli wanted to go all the way up to the Capitol to see all the fireworks happening down the street. When she and Alan reached the middle steps of the Capitol, it was the perfect setting. The crowd around them seemed to vanish as the New Year’s Eve fireworks started and continued. Alan got on one knee and asked Areli to marry him. There were fireworks all around their silhhouttes, creating a beautiful scene. When Areli said “yes,” people began clapping and there were even tears from some of the ladies in the crowd. Areli says “What a sweet moment! I did not expect a night like that at all! We’re so happy!”
JAcqueline roemmele AnD JP WAtters Jacqueline and Jay were on a scuba diving vacation in Honduras. Jacqueline says the day started as one of most horrible she’d ever experienced. She and Jay woke early and went on a hike through the jungle. It was 95 degrees and humid and when they returned, they jumped in the pool to cool off. Suddenly, they saw a man walk out through the trees next door, just 10 yards away, and shoot a gun into the air three times -- POW POW POW. The man was obviously a native and had a very menacing look. Another vacation home had been vandalized the day before, so Jacqueline and Jay were sure they were in serious danger! They were a mile into the jungle on a dirt road and felt very vulnerable. Jay threw himself in front Jacqueline and told her to run into the house. Jay followed her and suddenly five more shots rang out just outside the bedroom window. Jacqueline says by this point, she was hysterical and truly thought they were going to be killed. Minutes later, the property manager bounded up the stairs to tell the couple to relax and then explained. The man shooting was the local police and added that the situation was under control and there was no need to be afraid.
About an hour after they recovered from the shooting scare, Jacqueline noticed there were a few large bees on the screen of the guest bedroom. Jacqueline, who is allergic (to the point of having an EpiPen on hand), was very nervous about the bees. She called Jay who investigated, and determined that the bees were inside the house and that there was a huge swarm of them outside the house! The property manager quickly moved the couple out of their house and into another one for the remainder of their trip. Jacqueline and Jay were upset, but agreed, packed and moved to their new property. The new house was right on the beach, with a dock in front and a scuba shop the next street over. They settled in the new house and then jumped in the car for an adventure. They arranged for equipment and tanks and set out to dive the reef near the house and to put the awful day behind them. At sunset, Jacqueline was sitting on the dock in her wet suit, waiting to gear up to get in the water. Suddenly Jay stripped off the top of his wet suit. Jacqueline, irritated, said, “What are you doing? It’s getting dark, we have to get in the water!” Jay mumbled something about his bathing suit being “all jacked up”, and then suddenly to her shock, he was on one knee, with a beautiful diamond ring in his hand. Jay proposed and Jacqueline says it was incredibly beautiful and romantic. She will never forget Jay’s eyes and the sweet way he asked her, choking back tears and telling her from the moment they had met, knowing this day would come. Jacqueline says, ‘The ring is breathtaking so we’re ENGAGED!”

For the third year, The Wedded Bliss Bridal Faire 2012 was a wonderful event with over 1000 people and over 275 brides in attendance. Held on January 15, 2012, at Maude Cobb Activity Center in Longview, the Bridal Faire featured the area’s premier wedding vendors and an exciting runway style show presenting the most current fashions for brides and grooms. Over $16,000 in prizes were given away, including two destination honeymoons donated, one by The Wedded Bliss and one by Weddings A to Z. A-1 Party and Tent Rental presented a lucky bride with a $1,000 rental gift certificate, while other brides and grooms won door prizes offered by local area vendors. We hope everyone in attendance enjoyed the show and is now well on their way to planning their dream wedding.

EXPERT ADVICE FROM THE DYNAMIC DUO OF STYLE AND BEAUTY
FIND YOUR INNER GODDESS
| THE WEDDED BLISS MAR-APR 2012
Let The Wedded Bliss’s own dynamic duo of style and beauty help tame your tresses, land the perfect updo, and highlight your best features. Stylist Tony Allen and makeup artist Emily Laird tell how.
48
THE TAMING OF THE DO
•
April showers bring May flowers. The great thing about spring is that everything becomes green and vibrant again. The bad thing about spring is trying to get married and having the weather cause your hair to frizz, fall or go flat! Before you make that walk down the “I do” aisle, professional stylist Tony Allen addresses some things that may help tame your tresses.
If you’re wanting to color your locks, you’ll need to talk to your stylist about how fast your hair grows and your expectations for the overall look. Set up an appointment a week or two prior to the wedding. It is always nice to have some time in case your color doesn’t turn out the way you are expect it.
•
One week before the wedding, it’s a good idea to get a deep conditioning treatment put on your hair. Also, get your eyebrows waxed and have a facial. Consider a hot stone massage to get you relaxed for the big day ahead!

Now for the big kicker: Do not shampoo your hair a couple of days before the wedding. It may sound icky, but this gives your hair time to build up its natural oils. You brides to be may be saying, “Oh my! No, I have to have clean hair!” The truth is, if you want some shine and want to cut down on the frizz, leave your hair dirty. There is always exceptions to the rules — if your hair is fine then you may want it clean so it is not weighed down. When in doubt, consult your hair dresser.
•
•
“For starters, when a woman is trying on dresses for her big day, it’s important that she bring her camera along to snap photographs,” Tony says. “Once she finds the perfect dress, take even more photos. Then, she must go home and call her hairdresser ASAP!” Make a date with him or her to look at the photos and the veil. As stylists, they need to know where the straps are, what the cut of the dress is, how the back looks and where your veil will don your head before they can help you make any big decisions on your hair style.
Tony offered up other important tips for the bride-to-be:
“Do not shampoo your hair a couple of days before the wedding. It may sound icky, but this gives your hair time to build up its natural oils.” GET INTO SHAPE When you are looking at updos, keep in mind the shape of your face. In order to determine your face shape, you want to get a dry-erase marker and a mirror. First, pull your hair completely back, then get your marker and stand in front of that mirror and trace the outline of your face. Then, compare it to the face shape chart on the adjacent page. Once you have figured out what shape your face is you can start looking at some updos that will best flatter your already beautiful face.
WHAT IS MY FACE SHAPE? LONG: Your face shape is similar to an oval, but with more length added to the forehead and chin. RECTANGLE:
Your face is slightly more oblong, with a well-defined jaw and hairline.
ROUND: Your face is wider than others, with more emphasis on your cheeks and chin. SQUARE: You have the same chiseled features of a rectangular face, with shorter proportions. INVERTED TRIANGLE: Your widest features are at the top of your face, gradually tapering to a narrow chin.
HEART: Your face shape is characterized by a wide forehead and a heart-shaped hairline. Your cheeks widen at the temples, but thin out above the chin. DIAMOND:
Your hairline and chin mark the narrowest points of your face, while your cheekbones are the widest. This dramatic contrast in width creates a diamond shape.
TRIANGLE:
Your narrow forehead widens to a more pronounced jawbone.
OVAL: The most common face shape. Your facial features are spaced in even proportion.
DO
DON’T
LONG
DO try a super-clean tight-to-the-head updo. The tight lid emphasizes the width of a woman’s face.
DON’T create height in the top of your head — it will only make your face appear longer. Fringy bangs and face-framing tendrils will also create the unfavorable illusion of length.
RECTANGLE
DO choose a style that frames and breaks the sharp lines around the face. Side bangs look the best.
DON’T elongate your face with excessive height in the crown or deep straight back parts.
ROUND
DO opt to add height to your hair in the crown. Give your face the appearance of an oval by adding bangs and leaving some hair around the face. The goal is to make your face appear longer.
DON’T keep your hair matted to the top of your head. This will only make your face appear rounder!
SQUARE
DO accent your face with long pieces of hair that soften the jaw and draw focus to the eyes. Choose a style with soft sweeping lines that break up the angles of the face.
DON’T pull your hair completely off the face. Because squarefaced women frequently have strong jaw lines and prominent chins, the eye is immediately drawn to these areas.
DO choose an asymmetrically-aligned updo that creates the illusion of added width in the lower portions of the head.
DON’T add height to the crown or wear long, full hairstyles that draw attention to the jaw line. Center parts will bring negative attention to the middle of your face and make it appear longer.
DO minimize the width of your forehead by employing a deep side part, and by pulling any bangs to the forehead.
DON’T wear an updo that is pulled tight to your head, or plaster your bangs to your forehead. This can emphasize your face shape and make you appear older than you actually are. Who wants that?
DIAMOND
DO add bangs straight across the forehead. This widens the forehead area and slims down the cheeks. Pair your bangs with a ponytail, or for a more formal affair try a neat ballerina bun to show off your killer cheekbones.
DON’T part your hair down the middle or add extraneous height in the back of your head; This will only make your face appear longer.
TRIANGLE
DO wear side swept bangs and soft tendrils or wisps. These create the illusion of width and height in the forehead while minimizing the width throughout the jaw.
DON’T sport a slicked back updo or part your hair straight down the middle. This makes your face appear longer.
OVAL
DO have fun, wear what you want, and enjoy! Oval faces can wear most any style.
DON’T wear too much hair in your face. You want to show off those perfectly proportioned features.

LET IT SHINE
A woman’s confidence in who she is makes her shine. When applying makeup, professional makeup artist Emily Laird always gets a feel for her client’s personality. “A woman’s personality should shine through the makeup she wears”, says Emily. “Every woman has different features such as, eyes, lips, cheekbones, etc. that give her a unique beauty that is all her own. There are easy techniques to highlight and bring focus to these individual, beautiful God-given characteristics.”
JULIA - MAKEUP | THE WEDDED BLISS MAR-APR 2012
To create Julia’s springtime look, Emily brushed on a peach tone to Julia’s entire eyelid, and continued it all the way up to her brow bone. She then started to layer the darkest color on the outside of her crease, using a brush to blend out. For an extra splash of springtime, Emily added a stroke of gold over the entire lid, and blended outwards. Next, she added purple liner to the bottom lid and black liner to the top lid, but only put it half way down her lash line, in order to keep the open “big” look she was going for. To add a touch of color on Julia’s face, Emily used a peach blush on the apples of the cheeks. To contour the cheekbones, she used a bronzer, starting just underneath her cheek bone, then sweeping it up and outward. Finally, for her lips, Emily applied a beautiful pink rose lip gloss, completing this spring look.

JULIA - HAIR
To accentuate and show off Julia’s great features, Tony chose a simple pony tail. If your hair is lacking in length, take a tip from the stars. Extensions can quickly take your hair from short to sensational - in no time flat. In fact, the pony tail Julia is sporting was completely made from synthetic hair.

AUDREY - MAKEUP
For Audrey’s eye-popping look, Emily used Radiant Rebecca, a neutral beige copper color, over her entire eye lid. This automatically brought out Audrey’s blue eyes. (Radiant Rebecca is also a good base color to start with, and layer on.) For a real “eye popper”, Emily added forest green on the outside half of Audrey’s lid. Next, she used the same Radiant Rebecca (bare minerals) around the entire rim of her eyes. Emily states, “When I do a more dramatic eye I typically do a neutral lip. For Audrey, I chose a light beige for her lips. Also, to change up the eye shape and make the eyes appear even more open, I applied eyeliner solely to her bottom rim.” To complete the look, Emily contoured some bronzer to her cheekbones and then added pink blush to the apples of her cheeks.

AUDREY - HAIR
For Audrey’s short and chic hair style, Tony employed the use of a side bang and pin curls, to show off her stunning facial features. “Audrey has amazing eyes and cheek bones that I wanted everyone to see. The wisps of hair at the side point of her cheeks define her jaw line and command attention,” said Tony. This style really demonstrates how short hair can exhibit the same elegance as long hair.
AMANDA - HAIR
For Amanda, Tony transformed her mediumlength hair into a glamorous, 20’s inspired masterpiece. In order to make Amanda’s face really shine, Tony used a side bang, then added finger waves and a hair piece - to complete the look.
AMANDA - MAKEUP
| THE WEDDED BLISS MAR-APR 2012
For this classic look, Emily used Radiant Rebecca as a base on Amanda’s entire lid. She then added a smoky purple in the crease of her eye. Emily says, “Using a brush makes this very easy, as you simply start on the outside above the corner of the eye, follow the crease over, then make sure to blend out till you get the desired result.” Next, Laird applied black liner on top in a cat-eye, just pulling out the ends a little more than normal, into a swoop. To finish this classic look, she applied a sultry red on Amanda’s lips and applied a bronzer to her cheekbones and a pink blush to the apples of her cheeks.

FLOWERS FOR ALL SEASONS
62
Deciding which flowers to use in a wedding is important to the overall statement for the big day, but flowers can also be a big expense. Having a little knowledge about which flowers to buy and when to buy them, can help tremendously towards maintaining a wedding budget.
SPRING Typical spring weddings are light-hearted and cheerful. Nothing says that more than a bouquet of classic, seasonal flowers like Gerber daises or daffodils. Both of these flowers are naturally grown in the spring so they will cost less. Tulips are another flower that peak in the spring and are reasonably priced. There are also over 500 varieties of tulips to choose from which will help creating unique floral arrangements. Hyacinths’ lovely blue color is perfect for spring, and they tend to bring a more traditional feel to
a wedding. These flowers, though oldfashioned, can be mixed to look more modern. They are very affordable if purchased during the spring. The Calla lily and Lily of the Valley are very popular and also much pricier. The Lily of the Valley has a very short
growing season – they only bloom in the months of April and May. If these are used outside of their season, they would have to be imported. The Calla lily is a late spring flower and is imported from tropical regions. If they are a must have, they could be used as a focal point in the bride’s bouquet as an inexpensive alternative.
SUMMER More couples marry during the summer than any other time of the year. There are also more outdoor weddings during the summer, something to keep in mind when choosing flowers. Besides price and availability the flowers chosen will need to withstand summer heat. It is usually a safe bet that the seasonal regional flowers will last in the heat, but if those are not an option, a flower with a waxier petal is another alternative. Some
FALL
A fresh assortment of orchids, irises, and roses are a perfect pairing for the radiant summer bride
of the most commonly used flowers for this season are the Delphinium, Stock, Iris, Sweet pea, rose, and lily. While the summer is a better season for most types of lilies, they are still more expensive than the other flowers, although they do well in the heat. Roses, a classic choice, will be moderately priced as well.
Fall flowers are some of the most beautiful of the year. Though every season’s flowers have attractive colors, fall flowers have a warm, deep pigment. There are some pastel options, but these are less common. Sunflowers are a wonderful and affordable fall choice, if they are available. They have become a popular bridal flower, and carrying a single-stem sunflower down the isle is an easy way to combine elegant simplicity and a bright personality. Other options are brown-eyed Susans, Chrysanthemums, Ranunculus, Dahlias, Anemone, and Chinese Lanterns, Chrysanthemums, brown-eyed Susans, and Dahlias are the most inexpensive of these and are very pretty. The Ranuculus is perfect for a romantic feel. They are fairly priced since they are easily grown in the Southern United States. Chinese Lanterns and Anemone are beautiful accent flowers, but can be very pricey.
This vibrant bouquet features a variety of Dahlias, which create an explosion of autumn hues, perfect for any fall wedding.
Magnolias blossoms coupled with hydrangea accents make for a winter pairing to remember.
WINTER This time of year is dominated by Christmas colors. The best-priced accents will be the same used in Christmas decorations, holly, poinsettias, and evergreens. Winter wedding colors are mostly white, mixed with deep, saturated reds and purples. Roses are good for this season and are grown year-round in greenhouses. Hydrangeas, Snow Mums, carnations, and Gardenias are also available in the winter. They are also grown in greenhouses and will be more costly than traditional Christmas accents like holly or poinsettias. Magnolias are a good choice because of the significant contrast between the deep green of the leaves and the spotless white of the petals. Magnolias are also moderately priced. Ranculus, though more common in fall, can also be found in the winter time and come in many colors. Baby’s- breath can be used as filler for any season, but work especially nice in the winter.

RECIPES FOR COOKING WITH AND FOR EACH OTHER.
They say that a way to a man’s heart is his stomach, so why not fill your kitchen with a little romance? Grab your new hubby and get ready to explore and discover the delights of making meals together. Spending time in the kitchen while entertaining loved ones can also help newlyweds bond over making guests feel welcome in their new nest. When couples get cooking in the kitchen, love is definitely in the air. Baking bread is a great way to start a culinary adventure not only because fresh bread makes the house smell so great, but also because it’s a long (and sometimes messy) process that could keep you and your honey in the kitchen for some time! Here we have a recipe for you to try that’s super healthy and easy to whip up.
