CREAM CHEESE & BERRY TART | BY CHARLOTTE TAYLOR / PHOTOS BY CHARLOTTE TAYLOR

WE LIKE TO PRETEND THE HEALTHY BERRIES COUNTERACT THE CREAM CHEESE IN THIS DELECTABLE SUMMER TREAT

|  THE WEDDED BLISS  MAY-JUN 2013

Growing up, I always looked forward to our large family gatherings and reunions because I knew one of my aunts would bring a long, narrow Danish or two, made with puff pastry and filled with cream cheese. It seemed like they were two feet long.

10

Another aunt would always bring Kolaches filled with cream cheese or fruit from her favorite big city bakery. The cream cheese ones were what I lived for. There they’d be, both in their cute little bakery boxes waiting to be devoured the next morning at breakfast. And big surprise, those would always be the first things to go. Hats off to the creator of cream cheese. A few of my most favorite things are cream cheese, powdered sugar and puff pastry. For years now, I’ve kind of done the easy peasy danish thing by spreading cream cheese on crescent rolls and then roll them up, bake them, drizzle a little powdered sugar glaze on top and OH. MY. That’ll definitely fulfill your cream cheese craving. This time though, I wanted to make things a bit more summery and incorporate some summer berry goodness. Mmm and I am so glad I did. Simple ingredients, super taste. This recipe is so versatile. You can double the recipe for two tarts or make little individual ones, cut the dough however you’d like. Switch up the berries to whatever is available or eat it without the berries at all. Cream cheese and puff pastry are winners even by themselves!

WHAT TO DO: 1.

Preheat the oven to 375.

2.

In a small bowl, beat together the egg with 1 tablespoon water. Set aside.

3.

open up the thawed puff pastry and roll the dough out ever so slightly. 4.

Work fairly quickly because as the pastry warms it becomes a bit soft and sticky. Gently score a 1 inch border around the edge of the pastry with a knife, being careful not to cut all the way through.

5.

Brush the border with the egg wash and sprinkle with granulated sugar.

6.

Slide pastry/parchment onto a baking sheet and bake for appx. 20 minutes.

WHAT YOU NEED: • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed in

On a lightly floured sheet of parchment, gently

Remove from the oven and with the tip of your knife, gently re-score the border of your pastry

This fresh berry tart is simple and surprisingly addicting. The flavors of the berries along with the lemon zest in the cream cheese are so delicious. A fresh berry tart is great for breakfast or dessert any time of day and may very well become your new summer favorite thing. ENJOY!

9.

Slowly add the heavy cream to create a spreadable texture. If the mixture is still too thick, slowly add a little more cream.

10. When pastry has cooled, gently spread on the

pattern and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

VON’S VICE | VON’S SUMMER TRENDS TO TRY BY VON CRISWELL

BLOW IT OUT

“I LOVE IT SO MUCH... I’LL TAKE TWO!”

Gone are the days of tousled, romantic hair styles. Smooth soft waves are dominating the altar. Taking a note from the likes of Veronica Lake, this old Hollywood inspired look has a classic appeal for brides of all ages. Celebrities such as Naomi Watts and Jessica Chastain sent a clear message to the hair world during the 2013 awards season- never underestimate the power of a good blow out! Tamed tresses definitely require a trial run as keeping a smooth finish is paramount. The humidity and heat of Texas provides unique obstacles so be sure to meet with your hair stylist to ensure your hair type can withstand a long wedding day.

COSTUME CHANGES aren’t just for the theater. The idea of having an alternative dress for the reception, or

is a great way to have fun with your look. One of my brides recently relayed her secret motive for a second dress was to have more fun at

her reception.

“My main dress was too big to really dance outside at my reception. A shorter dress let me be more comfortable…I was more myself and happy!”- Pearl Atkinson Want to showcase your multiple fashion statements and stay within your budget? Be on the lookout for sales at local bridal boutiques. If you start your gown hunt early enough in the game, you are sure to find a beautiful bargain that won’t take away from other wedding necessities.

Birdcage veils have given way to a new bridal headwear trend – the headband. This tribal based look translates in the bridal world in the form of rhinestones and pearls. Brides are loving the versatility a headband provides as it can be worn with a variety of hair styles, ranging from a formal up-do, to long flowing locks. Remember the double wedding dress trend? The headband is a perfect fit for a fun reception dress so you don’t have to sacrifice the traditional veil for the ceremony.

NEON LIPS

Glossy neutral lips have been the most prominent pout request since the early 2000s. But the allure of hot pink, vibrant coral and even purple is convincing brides to go with a lip color that pops. A prominent lip conveys confidence while the neon shades are undeniably modern. Leave the gloss for the neutrals as bold colors photograph and wear much better as a matte. Neon lips too bold a statement for your look? Get creative with your manicure to satisfy your craving for color.

“... Uplighting lets a bride add the icing on the cake to her reception décor and really make the room look special.” When it comes to creating a mood for a reception, brides often focus on the three key ingredients: cakes, flowers and centerpieces. But ask DJ and uplighting specialist Casey Brown of Tyler and he’ll tell you that the right music and hues of light can create the desired reception as easily as any red rose or threetiered crème cake. Casey owns CMB Music Productions and Tyler Uplights – two hobbies that turned into businesses that he couldn’t be more proud of. His passion for both projects started at an early age. “Since I was young, I’ve loved music,” he said. “I was infatuated with drums and played for my church worship team and in school.

Music, sound systems, lighting — I was the biggest geek.” Life ultimately led Casey to take his passions and turn them into businesses that have been thriving in Tyler for many years now. He has worked with hundreds of brides in helping them plan for their big day. For Casey, music and lighting go hand-in-hand. “I work full-time with CMB and Tyler Uplights. It sounds like two jobs, but it doesn’t really feel that way to me,” he said. “Both services are great for many different types of events.” And weddings may just top his list! Every bride needs a DJ to play her musthave tracks during her reception. Uplighting, however, may not be as well-known. But rest

assured that it is a must for your ceremony and reception. “Uplighting is the practice of placing a light on the floor at the base of a wall and shining it up,” Casey said. “There are many types of lights that produce many different effects. Uplighting lets a bride add the icing on the cake to her reception décor and really make the room look special. A room with drapes looks great — a room with drapes and some lighting in the right places looks 1000 times better!” Casey does on-site consultations, and encourages any bride to communicate her desires to him and he will make her dream day a reality.

ASK THe EXPERT

CASEY BROWN, OWNER OF TYLER UPLIGHTS & CMB MUSIC PRODUCTIONS

Q: What are

your Top 5 requested songs?

A: Right now group dances are hot. So, in no particular order, “The Wobble,” “The Cupid Shuffle,” “Copperhead Road,” “Yeah” by Usher, and “Party Rock Jennifer Willard Photography Anthem.” Notice that three of those are group line dances. These days, guests are more comfortable doing things as a group. So don’t be afraid to involve them in the reception more. And try not to put too many line dances on the DO NOT PLAY list.

Casey Jay Benson Photography

Q: What’s YOUR favorite love song?

WiNNeR 2 YeARs RUNNiNG Casey says his customers ask him to do precisely what he loves. He's able to help give East Texas brides and grooms wedding days they will cherish for the rest of their lives. "It's something different for almost every bride, Casey said. "Like when the bride and groom walk into the reception hall for the first time when everything is in place, I hear a gasp of air followed by something like 'Oh my gosh, it's amazing!' The smiles on the dance floor from friends and family as they celebrate, the tears a father and daughter share on the dance floor during their first dance … it all adds up.”

VENDOR INFORMATION Tyler Uplights (903)-724-3192 www.tyleruplights.com

CMB Music Productions 903-724-3192 www.cmbdjs.com

A: I love a LOT of music, it’s a given if you’re going to be a DJ. My favorite love song would have to be “All For Love” by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, and Sting. It’s a great rock ballad from the 90s. I loved drumming along with it when I was a kid. When I proposed to my wife I knew I wanted it played at our wedding and we in fact used it as our bridal party processional. Q: Any lighting tips from a pro? A: All lighting is not the same. Look at photos or videos of lighting from anyone you are considering. For example, in a room with 45-foot ceilings, does the light make it all the way up the wall? Or does it fade out half way? Is the amber a true amber? Or does it have an orange halo around the edge? Is the monogram obviously crooked? Or do you have to pull out a tape measure to see?

Q: What colors do you have in lighting?

What kind of mood do they offer?

A: There are a few standard colors that brides use in their wedding and most of the time we try to incorporate one of those colors. Purple, pink, amber, aqua, white, off-white, and blue; and with that there are many different shades of each color that may work for the bride. However you don’t have to limit your choices to the colors of the wedding. Go with what you like, and what looks good.

MAY-JUN 2013  THE WEDDED BLISS  |

“Communicate on what you want, why you want it and how you want it. Good communication can keep the biggest blunder from happening,” he said. “Take the time to meet with us as well as your other vendors. You’ll feel better about working with your vendors and have a better wedding day experience with less stress.” His services are unique and change constantly as new technology in lighting and sound make their way into the industry. “Our services are always changing, from new lighting effects, new ideas in entertaining, to simply changing the method in how we do things,” he added. “We’re always going to be tweaking our services so that we can offer the best music entertainment and lighting experience possible. As a lighting designer I’ve got to try to constantly come up with something different to show to brides. Lighting is a very visual form. It’s hard to imagine it looking good, until you see it.” While CMB has been alive and well in Tyler for almost 18 years now, Tyler Uplighting is relatively new (3 years and counting). Casey currently has plans to open a location in Tyler for his uplighting service. “Once that’s open, I plan on offering small equipment rentals like black lights, spot lights and small sound systems. I may also expand to become a lighting dealer to assist local bands, churches and businesses.”

Emily KEllEy and BlaKE Taylor Emily Kelley and Blake Taylor had been dating for a while. In the summer Blake reminded Emily that she needed to take off work because they were attending a November 16 Texas A&M football game. Blake was an Aggie and the couple had been to many games throughout the season, so this was nothing out of the ordinary. Blake told Emily they were going to be flying into College Station, a very quick 30 minute flight. When the couple arrived at the airport to check in, Blake immediately took her ticket, again not out of the ordinary. She says she tends to lose her ticket between check in and gate arrival! However, the gate they were departing from kept getting changed (or so Blake said) so they arrived at their departing gate just as the plane was boarding. Emily saw the monitor said Orange County and being from East Texas and being unfamiliar with central Texas, she asked Blake if College Station was in Orange County. Blake explained to her that College Station is known for “their farming and orange trees” and thus, named Orange County. Emily says she was not going to argue with someone who had

actually lived there and knew more about it, so she let it go. The couple finally boarded the plan, left on time and then Emily says she heard the flight attendant come over the speaker and say “You should arrive at your destination in 3 hours.” She looked at Blake with confusion. He began laughing and said “Happy Anniversary!” So Emily began putting two and two together, realized they were going to Orange County, California but nothing more than that. Three long hours later, they landed, got their rental car and headed to their destination. (Emily had no clue where that was at this point.) Finally, they arrived in Laguna Beach, California, one of their favorite places, and checked into Emily’s favorite hotel. The first thing Blake wanted to do was head to the beach. So they did, taking their shoes off and walking along the beach enjoying the amazing weather and beautiful view. Emily says, Blake finally gave her a big hug, pulled her close and gave her an amazing speech while pulling out a beautiful ring. He then asked her to be his wife. She says she was 100% shocked and that it was literally the happiest moment of her life.

Fairytale SHEAR BEAUTY

FASHIONS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMIE MALDONADO

Move over, Cinderella! These stunning gowns from Weddings A to Z will leave your Prince Charming spellbound. In addition, Tony Allen and Alyssa Crosby worked their magic on hair and makeup to complete these fairytale looks.

“BELLE” OF THE BALL THE DRESS The model is wearing a dress with soft tulle pick-ups over satin with a ruched sweetheart bodice. The natural waist is accented by a beautiful beaded and embroidered sash with three-dimensional organza flowers. For more info on the dress and accessories featured in this look visit Weddings A to Z at www.WeddingsAtoZ.net or 903-597-7497 THE HAIR Tony curled the model's hair into pin curls with a ¾ inch curling iron and clipped them until they were completely cool. Then he took out all the clips and using Moroccan oil Hydration Cream on his fingers, pulled and arranged the curls.

THE MAKEUP This perfectly porcelain finish is accented with a black winged eyeliner and a conservative set of lashes, so as to not distract from the model's bold red lip. A crimson kisser is stealing the show while the glamour is kept to a minimum to keep from overpowering her captivating curls. The eye shadow was kept low key allowing a perfectly placed highlighter to work it’s magic along her cheek bone and under her brow bone.

JUST RIGHT THE DRESS (This page) The model is wearing a dress with delicate lace appliqués that make this gown stunning. The strapless, slim fitted look features a sweetheart neckline with Swarovski crystals. THE HAIR Tony again used a ¾" curling iron but separated the bride's hair into small 1”x1” square subsections. The important part of this look is to begin at the scalp to form the curls. Tony curled her entire head of hair from scalp to ends in a spiral form and finished by spraying with TIGI Hard Head.

MIRROR MIRROR THE DRESS (Opposite) The model is wearing a strapless, soft sweetheart beaded, lace dress over metallic silk with a modified mermaid form that has beautiful covered buttons over the back zipper and a chapel length train. For more info on the dress and accessories featured in this look visit Weddings A to Z at www.WeddingsAtoZ.net or 903-597-7497

THE HAIR For this look Tony used a 1¼” curling iron and divided the model's hair into 3”x1” diagonal subsections. He then started at the scalp and continuously curled until he reached the end of each subsection. TIP Make sure to start making curls at the scalp. Before you ever begin, use some smoothing cream on your hands!

THE MAKEUP This sultry eye holds everyone’s attention. The evening look features bold liner set against a soft, deep smokey eye. A heavier brow is presented to balance out the intensity of the shadows. Shimmer is kept to a minimum and a pink pout is paired with this enchanting deep gaze.
