Elizabeth Lauren Butler and Christopher Michael Camp were united in marriage on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at 5 o’clock in the evening. Libby is the daughter of Jerry and Becky Butler of Longview, Texas, and Christopher is the son of Marilyn Owens and Pete Stanton of El Dorado, Arkansas.

The ceremony took place at Winterfield United Methodist Church in Longview, Texas, the same church where Elizabeth’s grandparents were married in 1946. The reception that followed was an evening of dinner and dancing at Pinecrest Country Club with entertainment provided by Mattox Entertainment of Marshall, Texas. Instead of a registration book, guests marked their attendance by printing their fingerprints on a tree painted by the bride’s sister-in-law, Adrienne Butler. Guests also enjoyed a photo booth provided by The Photo Box and a personalized “Chris & Libby” word search. The custom-made cake topper featured clay likenesses of Chris and Libby and their three cats.

Following a wedding trip to the Caribbean, the couple will make their home in Sachse, Texas.

The Wedded Bliss is proud to bring this special issue of the magazine to our readers. A ton of pre-planning and work went into bringing the unique groom-inspired photos to life. The Wedded Bliss wishes to thank all of the people and vendors involved in making the photo shoot possible and for helping to create the beautiful photos. SHAWN SWINNEY – THE TUX SHOP OF TYLER The Tux Shop of Tyler provided top-notch suits for each individual shot. Shawn was wonderful to work with. He did an amazing job dressing our groom. A perfectionist of the groom’s style, Shawn always provides the latest fashions and has exquisite taste. WENDY STODDARD – LESA’S BRIDAL Wendy brought a gorgeous gown from her shop in Lufkin and spent the day with us making sure our model wore it perfectly. She brought shoes to compliment the gown and gave us lots of choices to make sure we got the perfect shots. Always a professional, Wendy came prepared and organized and made our day fun. NANCY ETCHELECU & ASHLEY MICHAUD – LILLIES & LACE BRIDAL AND FORMAL Nancy and Ashley chose a remarkable gown for our bride. Their knowledge of the latest bridal fashions proves that they’re on the cusp of everything new and upcoming in the world of the bridal industry. JO ANN OWERS - BRIDES & BELLES OF TYLER Jo Ann is a consummate professional. Her years in the bridal industry make her a true expert in the area’s bridal industry. She provided a beautiful gown for our model, and her knowledge of bridal beauty comes through in all she does. TONY ALLEN & EMILY LAIRD – IDENTITY DAY SPA Tony and Emily are truly experts in their field of hair and make-up. They were there from the first early morning shot to the last evening shot to make sure that the models looked their best. They each worked their magic with hair and make-up for both our male and female models. Tony and Emily are a super dynamic duo, and their sense of humor kept the atmosphere of the day light and fun. I truly enjoyed working with these two awesome professionals. KATHERINE BAILEY – SUSAN ROBINSON JEWELRY Katherine Bailey provided the most beautiful and elegant jewelry and watches for each model. It was exciting to watch Katherine surprise us with each remarkable piece. She was present for the entire photo shoot and helped make sure that the very last shot was a perfect ending to a glamorous photo shoot. ALISON PIANTANIDA – THE FLOWER GIRL Breathtaking is the best word to describe the bouquet designed and created by Alison. She chose the perfect flowers to compliment the dress and gave us the spring look that we were striving for. The roses were highlighted with beautiful gems adding that extra sparkle. AMY BOLTON & BRODY WING – MODELS As you’ll see from the wonderful photos in this issue, our models, Amy and Brody, were naturals, posing with an easy style and elegance. They brought life and beauty to each shot and radiated true beauty, inside and out. RAY JACKSON – LEGENDARY MEDIA Ray is the Web and IT guru for The Wedded Bliss and created the computer program we use for editing and organizing each element of the magazine. He filmed the entire photo shoot, from start to finish. Thank you Ray for spending the day with us and for filming the elements of our very first Groom’s Edition. REBEKAH WILLIAMS – WOW! CREATIVE CONSULTING Not only is Rebekah the proof editor for The Wedded Bliss, she was a warm and gracious host on the day of our photo shoot, allowing our crew to use her home for dressing and for taking breaks throughout the day. She connected us with locations and people to make our shoot possible, and we thank her for her hospitality. JP DAVIS & STEVE THORNTON – OAK PROPERTIES When we were scouting locations for our photo shoot for this issue, we knew we’d found the perfect place when we visited JP Davis and Steve Thornton at the offices of Oak Properties in Tyler. From interior to exterior, they built their offices with an undeniable sense of style and sophistication, perfect for our Groom’s Edition. The majestic oak trees that highlight their property were inspiration for our entire shoot and made our final shot magical. MONTY AND BECKY WHETSTONE – PORSCHE 911 CARRERA Monty and Becky were so kind to let us use their Porsche 911 Carrera on the day of the shoot. We wanted a look that only a Porsche could bring to our photos, and the car they call “Sweetness” did just that. TRENT SCHIEK & MELVIN GREGORY – HOLLYTREE COUNTRY CLUB Trent Schiek and Melvin Gregory allowed us to use the golf course and surrounding landscapes of Hollytree Country Club to add a bit of sport to our shots. As always, the club and course looked spectacular and the club’s hospitality is always valued. Hollytree is a true East Texas gem. CORY JONES, KODY FOSTER, & MARKIE MCNEESE – THE WEDDED BLISS ASSISTANTS Thank you for all the running, setting up, and breaking down throughout the day. Your help was needed and very appreciated. CLARITY KNOW-HOW

Your average Diamond Guide is comprised of four C’s that have been originated by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This is the body that developed the diamond grading system that most jewelers use today. To these 4 C’s, we’ve added two more, hence the 6 C’s in the title. The 6 C’s give you the detailed information you’ll need for buying your diamond.

Carat weight is the measurement by which a diamond is measured. It’s the big first question about all diamonds. It’s like asking a man how much horsepower he has under the hood of his car! It is a number that is worn with pride. To give you a clear comparative measurement of a diamond, a carat is equal to 200 milligrams. The larger the carat weight of a diamond, the more valuable the investment. Larger diamonds are harder to find especially

Toni and Stephen had a special remembrance for the groom’s best man, Cory Hart, who passed away just 2 weeks before the wedding. Engagement Stories Kayli Steger and Derek Head Kayli and Derek met when they were 14 at a mutual friend’s house and went on their first date to a movie. They stayed friends throughout high school and always liked each other, but the timing was never right. They rekindled their friendly romance at the end of their senior year of high school and hung out every day from prom to mid-summer. From there, they parted ways to go off to college, Derek to West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas, and Kayli to Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. They realized that a ninehour distance just wasn’t going to work for a relationship. They remained great friends, and when Derek moved to College Station to attend Blinn College, a random phone call changed their future forever. One night, Kayli randomly decided to call up her old friend Derek. She then drove two hours west for a visit. On the morning of October 15, 2005, she showed up on his doorstep, and they spent the day together, laughing and talking about old times. As the sun was setting on his balcony, Derek said, “We’re going to get married, aren’t we?” to which Kayli replied, “Yeah, you know, I think we probably will.” Six years later, to the day, the two will do just that. Derek proposed in the most beautiful place on earth – the

sunny shores of Australia! They went to Sydney to visit their friend (and now bridesmaid) Zebine who just finished graduate school there. It was Kayli’s birthday, and Kayli, Derek, Samantha, Zebine and Zebine’s roommate took a coastal walk from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach. The trail twisted around the gorgeous coastline and up steep cliffs. The turquoise water would hit the rocks, and it was incredibly beautiful and romantic. Having no idea that Derek had a ring in his pocket, Kayli squeezed Derek’s arm and said, “I can’t wait to marry you.” From this comment, Derek was nervous that Kayli knew his plan. As they got to the edge of the best cliff on the trail, right above Bronte Beach, Kayli was busy taking pictures of the breathtaking views. Finally, Zebine took Kayli’s camera to take some pictures, and Kayli finally stood still. Derek then said, “Hey Kayli, you know how you said you want to marry me? Well, I want to marry you too.” He then got on one knee and took out a gorgeous ring that sparkled in the hot Australian sun. Kayli was in such disbelief that she kept saying, “Oh my God, is this real? Is that ring real?” She then heard the pop of a champagne cork. The girls had snuck champagne in their backpack and poured the couple some bubbly to celebrate. A small crowd gathered and was clapping. After about five minutes of joyful tears and a celebratory toast, Kayli finally said, “Yes!” November/December 2011  The Wedded Bliss

Financial Planning for the Bride and Groom

You may never have balanced your checkbook. But now that you are getting married, it is time you and your fiancé talked about finances. The good people at GroomGroove.com have provided us this article on pre-marital financial planning. From spending and saving, to bank accounts and investments, keep your marriage financially balanced. Money is the number one cause of friction in a marriage and a frequent contributor to divorce. Much of that friction can be avoided in advance of getting married by having an open discussion with your fiancé about financial priorities and setting up a financial system to accomplish those priorities.

Priorities Spending Habits and Checking Accounts Typically, newlyweds are advised by financial planners to set up a joint bank account. This forces the couple not to think of “my” money but “our” money and is particularly important when one spouse earns more than the other or one spouse is perceived as the breadwinner. However, couples that maintained separate bank accounts prior to getting married often find it difficult to adjust 40

to having joint bank accounts. “Having two checking accounts wasn’t working,” Rob Stevens, Claire’s husband says, “but having only one single account wasn’t going to be a solution. We settled on a single bank account where our pay was being deposited, groceries and investments would be paid out of, then paid each other $300 per week for our own spending to a separate account.” Not uncommon, such strategies allow couples to be responsible with their spending, particularly if one spouse has different spending habits than the other. If, for example, Rob spent his $300 one week on tickets and travel to the “Final Four” college basketball tournament, he’d have to wait until next payday to be replenished. Sticking closely to the rules is an important part of maintaining financial bliss, as most of the problems related to money are resentment-related.

My debt, your debt College-educated men and women will likely bring some education debt into the marriage, which is something of an investment in the future. These debt payments need to be budgeted for, but in all likelihood, you will have been paying down your student loan prior to

November/December 2011  The Wedded Bliss

getting married. That may be old hat for you. On the other hand, consumer debt (although often smaller than student loans), can be debilitating as many people can’t cope with credit card spending. Anna Bruno, an AXA-Advisors financial consultant tells GroomGroove.com, “Far too many people use credit cards as an additional income source and sink further into debt. The interest on credit cards builds up much faster than interest on a savings account.” It can be quite surprising to see how quickly and where credit card money is being spent. Check out your credit card statements online and sort them by merchant. You’ll quickly see that five dollars “here and there” at Starbucks can add up to $3,000 per year of foregone savings. If you both have spending problems, you may need the advice of a financial counselor to help you through. Spending the money to talk with a planner will save you money in the long run.

Credit Check That Macy’s credit card your fiancé has tucked away in her wallet may seem innocuous. Do you know, however, whether she’s paid the bills on time? Have you wondered what her credit

rating looks like? If you haven’t, getting mutual credit reports is a good idea. The point is not to shame or be shamed, but know what you are dealing with. It is important in the event you and your wife want to get a mortgage to buy a condo or a house. Knowing your credit history can help in figuring out what areas you need to improve on and how likely it is you’ll be able to get a mortgage. Credit reports are available on a yearly basis for free from one of the three major credit agencies. As a matter of law, you are entitled to a free credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com. There may be a recurring “credit monitoring” fee you should watch out for, but generally you can get your report and cancel any such monitoring fees so that the credit report really is free. Sit down with your report and your fiancé to figure out whether there are cards that can be cut up. It’s often interesting to remember that “oh yeah, I forgot all about that Bloomingdale’s card!”

A Financial Diet If you and your fiancé have set up a financial plan, so that you know how much money you are likely to get for your own entertainment, one way to stay on the financial wagon is by going on a financial “diet”. Get your fiancé to put the credit cards away. Hide them, if necessary! If your spending budget is $100 per week, each week you should withdraw $100 from your account and have the bank cut it into $10 bills. See how long you and your fiancé can last on $10 per day. You will essentially become each other’s personal bankers. It will quickly be apparent to you both the

value of money and the value of saving. GroomGroove.com recognizes that you may have similar gluttonous spending habits as well. Going on a financial diet makes that new Cobra Golf Driver all the more worthwhile.

Investments Taking some time to meet with a financial planner is very important, particularly if you’ve been working for several years but have no savings to show for it. If you have some savings and the

idea that investments are a wise move, you’re ahead of the game. There are several different types of investments, and a professional can help you choose the method that is best for you and your fiancé. One of the biggest mistakes couples make when investing is that they assume an aggressive stance while losing sight of the long-term. Bruno reminds investors that, “patience and persistence are the operative words here. Don’t let the market rattle you into changing your battle plan.” Investments are particularly wise for young, soon-to-be-married couples when it comes to the prospect of planning a family together. Not only is the price of daycare astronomical , but keep in mind that additions to your family of two might create the need for more liv-

ing space. And remember that debt you are paying off from college will soon become your children’s debt, and to what degree will be determined by you. Saving for their college educations (not to mention any private education along the way) will become a factor from the moment junior arrives.

Retirement It may seem a long way off, but thinking about retirement can be an eye opener. You will definitely need the advice of a financial planner in this case. Bruno posits, “If you have trouble saving money on a regular basis, you may try savings strategies that force you to save. Examples of forced savings strategies are whole life insurance, employer-sponsored retirement plans, and direct payroll deductions.” These are options that might not immediately spring to mind, but that will ensure you have a nest egg when the time comes.

In Sum Money isn’t something to be intimidated by or ignored. The key to a successful marriage, financially speaking, is to establish a clear game plan and stick to it. Keep the lines of communication between you and your soon-to-be-wife open at all times, and always maintain honesty when it comes to your financial reality. Best Man’s Responsibilities

The

Congratulations! You’re someone’s Best Man. It’s a great honor and is a lot of fun. The bad news is that you might not know exactly what you’re supposed to do as a Best Man. Keep in mind that your buddy’s wedding is going to have different elements and options. Indeed, all of this could change if the groom and bride are having a destination wedding, or a backyard wedding, or a Star Trek-themed wedding. (Yes, really.) • • • •

Months Before the Wedding Get fitted for your suit or tuxedo. (It’ll likely cost you some coin, upfront. More on that, later.) Organize and execute the bachelor party. Help the groom with his wedding duties. (Familiarize yourself with them on GroomGroove.com.) Be a confidant of the groom — your buddy is guaranteed to be a bit nervous.

Weeks Before the Wedding • Ask the groom and bride whether you’ll have the honor of being called on to make a best man speech. • Start preparing that wedding speech. (Because it won’t work well if you do it off the cuff.) • Volunteer to help keep the groomsmen organized. Days Before the Wedding • Pick up your tuxedo rental. Make sure the groomsmen have gotten their tuxes, too. (Did a grooms46

November/December 2011  The Wedded Bliss

man forget to pack black socks? Deal with it, and don’t mention it to the bride!) Attend the wedding rehearsal, paying attention to your duties and also the duties of the groomsmen. (The rehearsal is usually held the night before the wedding, in the mid-afternoon.) Attend the rehearsal dinner, and maybe even help in the preparations of the rehearsal dinner, which is often a relaxing event. (Think beer and flip flops, rather than tuxes and uptight. But be prepared for something more formal, too.) Help decorate the reception site with flowers, boughs, and other frilly things that the bride came up with. Smile while doing it. Make friends with the Maid of Honor. The night before the wedding, organize the decoration of the wedding transportation, if necessary. You know — “Just married” etc. Be classy, of course!

The Wedding Day - The Ceremony • Help the groom get dressed in his tuxedo or suit, and make sure he looks great. • Make sure the groom arrives at the wedding location on time. (About 30 minutes before the wedding starts.) • Keep the groom’s and bride’s wedding rings until the ring exchange. (Don’t lose them!) • Know when you’ll be called upon to deliver the rings. • Stay awake, smile, and meet the groom and brides extended family. • Sign the marriage license and act as a legal witness to the marriage. The Wedding Day - At the Reception • Work with the Wedding MC so that any hiccups get sorted out. The wrong course is about to be delivered? Jump up, and sort it out. Bonus points if the bride never even notices. • Present a very classy, funny best man speech or toast to the groom. • Politely and tactfully take care of anyone who has had too much to drink. Go easy on the booze. Have fun and celebrate! The Wedding Day - Post-Reception • Help load and transport and secure the wedding gifts from the reception site. • Make sure that nothing is left at the reception site. • If the transportation is not provided for by the bride and groom, you may be expected to drive the newlyweds to the airport, home or hotel. • Return both your tuxedo and the groom’s tuxedo to the rental shop.

The Wedding Day - Post-Ceremony • The couple may give you a sealed envelope with a donation to give to the church, synagogue or officiant. • Help the photographer gather and organize the guests for any group shots. Say “Cheese!” • If it rains, have umbrellas ready to roll. Check the weather. • If the transportation does not arrive or is late, have a plan. Never let the bride or groom have to figure it out.

The Groom’s Cake Sweet, Unique, and Just for You. T

he big day is almost here, and your bride has spent hours finding the perfect cake design and flavor to make her wedding dreams come true. But, what’s a groom to do if Italian crème or French vanilla is not the flavor that you’ve been dreaming of? Well, you get the groom’s cake of your dreams! The good news, when it comes to the groom’s cake, is that the sky is the limit. You can choose a cake in any flavor, shape, or color. Of course, if chocolate is near and dear to your heart, you can choose a decadent chocolate design that will send any chocoholic over the edge. Thinking outside of the traditional wedding box, many of today’s grooms are requesting cakes baked and iced to reflect their hobbies or interests. Your engaging and original design can even resemble your college logo or mascot, your latest trophy bass, or even your dream car. The groom’s cake can raise the bar on creativity and add an extra element of fun to your reception. If you can dream it, many of the area’s cake designers can make it a reality.

If the idea of having a groom’s cake is new to you, it’s really not new at all. With origins in the 17th century, the groom's cake is a very old wedding tradition, somehow lost and now rediscovered. The history of the groom's cake is as varied as its flavors and shapes. Some sources say it originally was a rich, dark fruit cake without icing; some say it was a fruit cake with white icing to match the bride's cake which was decorated with spun sugar.

Jumping Bass Groom’s Cake – Cakes By Design Pam Phillips from Cakes By Design created this groom’s cake to reflect the groom’s fishing hobby. The sculpted bass with airbrushed detailing sits atop a 16” single layer cake with buttercream frosting. This cakes serves 40 guests but can be added to another cake to increase the servings. Custom Rig Groom’s Cake – Designs By D’Anne Groom, Thomas Ivy, asked Designs By D’Anne to design his groom’s cake as a replica of Ivy’s Poison, his award-winning 1986 Peterbilt 359. D’Anne’s son, Dustin, was the lead designer on the design and bakery work, and D’Anne’s daughter, Lacy, perfected it with her professional air brush artistry. 50

November/December 2011  The Wedded Bliss

The tradition of the groom’s cake is especially popular among the single, female wedding guests. Legend has it that if they take a slice of the groom's cake and place it beneath their pillows at bedtime, they will dream of their future husbands.

Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups Groom’s Cake – Chez Bazan French Bakery & Café Claudia Bazan-Hill and her staff at Chez Bazan French Bakery & Café created this Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups Cake for a bride wishing to surprise her groom with a cake designed after his favorite candy. This cake serves 125 guests and consists of four layers of chocolate cake with peanut butter mousse filling. The cake weighed in at 52 pounds!

If you or your bride are unsure of groom’s cake etiquette, the groom's cake should be sliced and served separately, usually by a member of the wait staff. Some couples prefer to offer the groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner, a fitting time since the groom's family hosts the occasion.

Wooded Themed Groom’s Cake – Ganache The bakery artists at Ganache created this uniquely designed groom’s cake to reflect the wooded theme of the wedding event. The banana nut cake is covered in a honey cinnamon buttercream frosting. Adding to the beautiful detail, meringue mushrooms were added along the edges, and the cake was placed atop a tree-trunk cake stand.

Triple Chocolate with Chocolate Covered Strawberries Groom’s Cake – The Luscious Crumb This 14-inch triple chocolate cake with ganache filling is the most requested groom’s cake from The Luscious Crumb. Topping the cake is a covering of fresh chocolate-dipped strawberries. The frosting is done in a basket weave patter to give the cake the appearance of a basket of strawberries. The Luscious Crumb can also make this cake with fresh strawberry filling.

Now that you are thinking about your wild, gravity-defying design or more modest and subtly masculine creation, don’t miss this opportunity to have something at the wedding and reception that you can truly call your own. This charming tradition honors you, but be sure you take a bit of the groom’s cake with you after the reception to enjoy the next day as a “sweet” start to your life together.

Whoa Look Who’s Driving – Cindy's Creative Cakes Cindy of Cindy’s Creative Cakes is known for doing 3-D cakes. This unique design is made of rich devil’s food chocolate cake and is covered with chocolate icing overlaid with red homemade fondant. The head of the man and deer are each sculpted using sugar gum paste making the entire cake completely edible! November/December 2011  The Wedded Bliss
