SUGAR COOKIES ARE NOT JUST FOR SANTA. CHARLOTTE TAYLOR SHOWS HOW THIS HOLIDAY FAVORITE CAN BE TRANSFORMED INTO CHIC EATS FOR YOUR WINTER WEDDING!

|  THE WEDDED BLISS  NOV-DEC 2013

Custom decorated sugar cookies have become wildly popular and uber chic these days. These cookies are as at home in a lunchbox as they are on a fancy dessert table. Set them out for Santa or

serve them up with tea. Ice them with a glaze or outline them with royal icing and you’ve turned the ordinary into extraordinary. I don’t know about you but, they have definitely moved up quite a few notches from the cookies I left out for Santa! Sugar cookies are not a new invention by any means, they date back to the 17th century. Culinary guru’s say that the first cookies were actually test cakes. A small amount of cake batter was baked to test the oven temperature; eventually they began to sell them to eliminate waste. These tasty little treats quickly caught on and a sugar based creation was born. Word then spread throughout Europe in the 17th century and later they were introduced to the Americas. Three cheers for the 17th century! Plain and sugary, or layered with icing, sugar cookies are always a winner. Personalized sugar cookies would make great save the dates, wedding favors, edible place cards or just yummy treats on your reception table. For an elegant look, keep the icing colors subdued and save the colorful, bold stuff for the holidays. These cookies are scrumptious iced or plain, they travel well and keep very nicely in the freezer.

until firm again. In the meantime, preheat the oven to 350°. Place chilled dough cut-outs a few inches apart on a baking sheet sprayed with non-stick spray. Bake for 8-9 minutes until they start to show the slightest golden color on the bottom. Remove from the oven and let rest right on the cookie sheet for 2-3 minutes to firm up a bit. Using a spatula, gently move cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with the remaining cookie dough, making sure to place raw

YOUR ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR BRIDAL, PROM, FORMAL & MORE, BACKED BY OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE

“My favorite part of my job is the look on a bride’s face when she finds the perfect piece and says YES TO THE DRESS!” Walls lined with dresses of taffeta, chiffon and lace in an array of colors create a much different work environment for Debbie Norton, The Glitz Boutique owner, who grew up in Marion, Indiana working in her familyowned sporting goods store. A Longview resident for 15 years now, she has morphed her world of tennis rackets and camping tents to wedding gowns and haute couture. Her business is now in its fifth year of catering to brides, wedding

parties, prom goers, pageant queens and more. “We really are your onestop-shop for weddings,” Debbie said. The store carries designer prom gowns and Jim’s Formal tuxedo rentals for all formal wear occasions. A little known fact is that The Glitz Boutique also has a great selection of women’s ready-to-wear outfits, from business to semi-casual. As a matter of fact, the 2,500-square-foot space in the Brookwood Village in Longview is practically bursting at the seams with the size of Debbie’s exquisite inventory. “The Glitz is the premier dealer for Maggie Sottero designer bridal gowns as well as various other designers,” she added. “We also carry Jordan and Bill Levkoff bridesmaid dresses and the largest selection of mother-of-the-bride dresses in town.” When you shop at The Glitz, expect a variety of bridal looks along with amazing customer service. Debbie values each and every bride who walks through her doors and wants to make wedding dress shopping an experience as easy and memorable as it can be. “My favorite part of my job is the look on a bride’s face when she finds the perfect piece and says YES to the dress!” Debbie said. “When she comes in my store, I’m on a mission to help her find exactly what she’s looking for.”

NOV-DEC 2013  THE WEDDED BLISS  | 11 The best time to start shopping for your dream dress is at least nine months before the big day, but if you’ve got more time there is no reason not to use it. Once the dress is ordered, it can take up to three months to arrive and then the alterations can begin. It pays to give yourself time to shop at a comfortable pace and leave plenty of leeway for preparations. There are usually two scheduled fittings, and each alteration can take up to two to three weeks. To help Debbie narrow down the countless fields of couture styles, it’s best to come armed with the style you are looking for and what price range you have in mind. According to Debbie, this years hottest trends feature lace and low backs, just something to keep in mind. Certain fabrics can make a gown shine depending on the type of ceremony you are having. “Satin and taffeta are must haves for traditional weddings, while destination weddings usually call for a chiffon fabric,” she added. One of the most difficult parts of dress

determination is the budget. Fear not! Debbie has a plan for that, too. For the bride on a tight budget, The Glitz has dresses on sale! "They are still beautiful, just a little less expensive," said Debbie. “My Maggie Soterro gowns start at $799 and go up from there, but I have nothing in the store over $1,700. You should also think about accessories. Allow at least $300 for little ‘extras,’ such as the veil and jewelry, as well as undergarments.” Hint: No undergarments are needed for Maggie Soterro gowns! For a unique opportunity to view some of the favorite pieces in Debbie’s shop, this year’s Bridal Faire is the place to be. “I always like to surprise the audience with what I showcase at events,” she said. "But I will tell you we are bringing in lots of different gowns, motherof-the-bride and bridesmaid dresses, tuxedos and flower girl flair. You don't want to miss it!"

DID YOU KNOW? The Glitz was featured on Lifetime in a “Prom

Queens” segment - “Don’t Mess with Texas” on September 20, which also featured Tatum High School. A young lady named Andrea, who purchased her dress from The Glitz, won Prom Queen.

VON’S VICE | BY VON CRISWELL

A BEAUTY ADDICT’S INPUT ON MAKE UP, STYLE & WELLNESS

PRETTY POISONS TO AVOID

|  THE WEDDED BLISS  NOV-DEC 2013

Dear Von,

20

A few years ago, I stopped wearing make up on a regular basis when I realized what was in it. Artificial fragrances, colors and chemicals are all on the short list of things I try to stay away from. I still have a bit, but I only wear it on special occasions. I want to find a make up line I can feel good about wearing. What brand do you recommend? Jennifer - Tyler,Texas

Dear Jennifer,

I am definitely an ingredient conscious esthetician and make up artist. Although make up for weddings or other occasions where you will be photographed professionally are an exception. These rare occasions require performance based products and my focus is not on ingredients. But when it comes to the ingredients you put on your skin day in and day out, keeping toxic ingredients out of your beauty products should be a top priority. One of the primary functions of your largest organ, your skin, is absorption. So think about what you put on your body the same way you think about what you put in your body. The quest for beauty has a checkered past at best. Ancient Egyptians are thought to have been the first to pack on poisons for the sake of pretty. Their exaggerated eye makeup was made of malachite, copper and lead. Ancient Romans used white lead to lighten their faces, then topped that off with a bit of red lead as rouge. (That type of red lead is used in the manufacture of batteries and rust-proof paint!) Perhaps the most known face of the lead craze was the infamously white complexion of Queen Elizabeth I in the 15th Century. One would think that in 2013 we would have learned from our lead poisoned ancestors and would only allow non-toxic beauty products to be sold. But regulatory systems are not fail proof. Furthermore, considering that a lot of products aren’t even made here in the

• BENZOYL PEROXIDE: The molecular structure of this common acne-treating ingredient produces free radicals. In 1995 the FDA changed benzoyl peroxide from a Category I (safe) to a Category III (safety is uncertain) ingredient and stated this action (56 FR 37622) was based on new information that raised a safety concern regarding benzoyl peroxide as a tumor promoter. • DEA (DIETHANOLAMINE), MEA (MONOETHANOLAMINE), & TEA (TRIETHANOLAMINE): This foam booster is a skin/eye irritant and causes contact dermatitis. These are easily absorbed through skin to accumulate in body organs, even the brain.

United States, it’s easy to see how the most affordable, sometimes toxic option, slips right into your tube of lipstick. You mentioned that you were still wearing some of your old make up on special occasions: Throw that stuff out, girl! Most make up has a shelf life of 1 year. Check the back of your container to see the expiration date. The number represents the number of months the product can be used after the initial opening. Old make up can be toxic. The chemical structure of beauty products can change over time. If the manufacturer says it’s only good for a certain amount of time, honor that. This is especially true for eye make up. No amount of make up can make infected eyes pretty. Aside from becoming a chemist or researching every ingredient extensively, the internet can be very helpful. Websites such as www.ewg.org is a respected resource for checking the toxicity levels of beauty products. They even have an app for your smart phone which can be very helpful when you’re on the go. Knowledge is the building block for beautiful, healthy skin. Yes, it takes a little more effort to find non-toxic make up, but your face is worth it!

Peace & Lipstick,

• FD&C COLOR & PIGMENTS: Here’s the thing: Manufacturers don’t have to tell you what’s in these ‘colors’ or ‘fragrances’. The label will simply read ‘fragrance’. So heaven knows what’s in that! Synthetic colors from coal tar contain heavy metal salts that deposit toxins in skin. • PARABENS (METHYL, BUTYL, ETHYL, PROPYL): This often used preservative is a major hormone disrupter. The body treats this similarly to estrogen and is linked to hormone imbalance in females , early puberty and breast cancer. • PROPYLENE GLYCOL (PG) AND BUTYLENE GLYCOL: The EPA considers PG so toxic it requires protective gloves, clothing, goggles and disposal by burying. Because PG penetrates skin so quickly, EPA warns against skin contact to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. • SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) AND SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES): Found in 90% of personal-care products that foam. • TRICLOSAN: A synthetic antibacterial ingredient with a chemical structure similar to Agent Orange!
