“Every once in while in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives you a fairy-tale.” That is how I felt when my husband, James, asked me to marry him. I wanted the fairytale to continue to my wedding day and beyond. I picked up a copy of The Wedded Bliss and found my wedding planner, Esther Yeager with Plan It! Events, and she made my fairy-tale come true. Being on the cover of The Wedded Bliss magazine has made me feel famous. I have loved showing the photographs of our wedding in the magazine to my friends and family. We have been able to remember the beautiful day over and over again. The magazine cover will be forever with me and be part of my memories that I will show my grandchildren. I cannot thank my wedding vendors enough for their help in making everything perfect. Dress Me Bridal helped me find the perfect dress and made sure that it was tailored exactly for me. The Arbor made it possible for me to be married in a chapel setting that freely welcomed all my family and friends. I was so nervous to be married that I forgot to pay attention to some of the special moments, so I am glad that my wedding planner encouraged a videographer to record the memories of the day. The music from CMB Productions and the beautiful flowers from La Tee Da were just what I wanted to make the night complete. Casey Jay Benson photographed the entire day and evening and captured every special moment and memory. At the end of my beautiful day, I felt like I had hijacked a rainbow and landed in a pot of gold because everything was so wonderful! Our wedding was a perfect fairy-tale with the most important people in my life- my husband, family and friends.

We can't believe it's been nearly a decade of advertising with The Wedded Bliss! We are glad to have continued our partnership with this publication over the years as our business has grown. Keeping up with East Texas weddings, seeing our lovely brides and grooms grace the pages, winning "The Best of the Bliss" for several years, participating in the bridal shows, and even having our own wedding featured seven years agoit's all been so much fun! We value the relationships we've formed over time, both with Sandra and her team, and also many other talented wedding professionals. Now, having our company featured in this issue is just icing on the cake! It is our hope that the article is informative to readers, and that it inspires every bride and groom to have their big day captured on film, whether by us or another company. We believe that film, with its ability to capture voices, mannerisms, movement, and words, is the ideal way to preserve a story for generations to come. Many thanks to The Wedded Bliss for the years of friendship and service, and many blessings on all the couples planning their wedding day!

ROASTED VEGGIES

BY CHARLOTTE TAYLOR / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN LABOYTEAUX

Do you have a favorite vegetable? Don’t like vegetables? Well, holiday rule number one is: I am not here to convince you to like vegetables. I mean, you're all grown up. Just remember, often times our tastes change through the years and things we once despised are now wonderful in our adulthood, if we will just give them a fresh new try. I was a bonafide vegetable hater as a child - hiding pinto beans in my dinner napkin and then exclaiming, "See, I'm all done!" Did I really think my parents would fall for that? My dad laughs about it to this day, but those were serious times as a vegetable hatin' kid.

Cabbage

VEGGIES TO ROAST

Tis’ the season to be roasting. It’s not all just about roasting meat anymore. Roasting vegetables has become THE way to bring f lavor to the table any time of the year. It’s so much easier, simpler, and healthier than those carb-a-licious casseroles we grew up on. Roasted vegetables are scrumptious hot out of the oven or even at room temperature. Arrive at your next holiday event with a platter of brightly colored beauties and they will grab everyone’s attention…even those casserole lovers.

Though my generation may have grown up with a ‘you are not leaving the table until you clean your plate’ method of dinner etiquette, we went a different route with our girls. We eased up on the forced thing, but did persuade them to try, just TRY, a certain veggie at least once. The odds seemed to work in our favor more often than not. Thankfully our three mostly grown daughters now love all of the typical eww vegetables. If you can somehow find that magical balance of flavor and texture that kids love and will not balk at, they will most likely be hooked on veggies for the rest of their life. The rest of us just have to find our way. Vegetable cooking methods have changed a bit over the years, I am glad to say. Boiling veggies to mush is a thing of the past, roasting is now where it’s at. The appeal of roasting for me is the ease and simplicity of it, and the crispier texture and flavor you gain is indeed an added bonus. My experience cooking for crowds has taught me that efficiency is of utmost importance, and roasting best fits that need. Cooking diced onions on a baking sheet in the oven was the most brilliant thing I had ever heard of, and that led me to a little experimenting at home. Roasted broccoli was our first endeavor. By simply adding a drizzle of olive oil, a few dollops of butter, salt, pepper and a few slices of lemon, it turned fresh broccoli into a dish our family still begs to have. Voila! Lemon broccoli became a staple in our household. Roasting vegetables is all about a hot oven and speedy cooking to seal in those flavors and make them perfectly tender-crisp. Keep in mind that fresh works best. If there is too much moisture going on during the roasting process, it will become a steam bath. That’s no Bueno!

BRINGING FLAVOR TO THE TABLE ANY TIME OF YEAR

• START BY: removing outer leaves, then core, halve, and cut into one inch slices. Drizzle with olive oil, diced garlic, salt and pepper. • COOK AT: 400 for 15-20 min. • TRY ADDING: chopped bacon, or a drizzle of soy sauce Carrots

• START BY: peeling, slicing (or use baby carrots as is), toss with olive oil, salt and pepper • COOK AT: 400 for 20 minutes, stirring often • TRY ADDING: diced garlic, or a drizzle of honey and balsamic vinegar Broccoli

THE JIST OF ROASTING VEGETABLES - Fresh, washed and dried veggies work best. Though I have been known to ‘roast’ frozen broccoli and Brussel sprouts, they take a bit longer and are more of a cross between steamed and roasted. Still yummy, but not technically a roasted vegetable. Fresh is preferred. - A hot oven. Roasting should take place in a preheated oven of about 400-425. To give your veggies a jump start on getting their yummy crunch on, try placing your empty baking sheet into the oven and preheat it before adding those veggies. - Resist the urge to over crowd your pan. Again, this will only encourage those little dumplings to steam up instead of roast and toast. Roasted vegetables need room to breathe. My rule of thumb is that they should barely be touching each other, if at all. - When slicing and dicing, try to keep them all relatively the same size. Whether you prefer one inch cubed bites or two inch chunks, be consistent. They will cook more evenly, and you will avoid some bites being over or under cooked.

• START BY: halving florets, toss with olive oil, butter, salt, pepper, diced garlic • COOK AT: 400 for 20-25 minutes, turning once • TRY ADDING: lemon slices, and/or parmesan and pine nuts Brussel Sprouts

• START BY: leaving whole or halved, toss with olive oil or bacon grease, salt, pepper, diced garlic • COOK AT: 400 for 25 minutes, turning once or twice • TRY ADDING: 1 cup dried cranberries, a reduction of 1 cup balsamic vinegar, and 1/2 cup sugar to cooked sprouts Butternut Squash

• START BY: peeling, halving, removing seeds and cutting into cubes – toss with olive oil, salt, pepper, diced garlic • COOK AT: 400 for 20-25 minutes, turning once • TRY ADDING: diced red onions, cubed red potatoes, maple syrup or bacon Potatoes (red or russet)

• START BY: peeling (if desired), dice or slice, toss with olive oil, vegetable oil, or a bit of bacon grease, salt and pepper • COOK AT: 425 for 20 minutes – turning once • TRY ADDING: ranch dressing powder, rosemary, garlic, onions, bacon, or parmesan and so much more! Whole Green Beans

• START BY: tossing with olive oil, salt, pepper, diced garlic • COOK AT: 400 for 15-20 minutes – turning once • TRY ADDING: Worcestershire and soy sauce (for an Asian restaurant taste)

This list is not exhaustive by any means. You can experiment with any of your favorites, the rules are very similar for anything you roast. Toss with a bit of oil, season, don’t overcrowd, and cook in a hot oven. Roasted vegetables are a great and glamorous side dish, or they can stand alone as an appetizer or even on a salad. Give them a try for your next holiday gathering and they’ll be the star of the show. ENJOY!

The McKellars | Wedding Cinema BY SUSAN TERRY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDI BURKETT

A WEDDING STORY SHOULD BE TREASURED FOR A LIFETIME.

|  THE WEDDED BLISS  NOV-DEC 2014

“…a husband and wife filmmaking duo who tell the intimate story of folks becoming husband and wife.”

30

For these two world travelers, the day was perfect. There was joyous laughter, a spontaneous “re-proposal,” a resounding horah, Mazel Tov, dancing, and beautiful genuine vows! Sweet tears fell on the bride’s cheeks as she spoke, “There comes a day in your life when you evaluate what you want and where you are going. I didn’t know where I was going, but you caught me off guard, and you became my compass and purpose. Even though we might not be on the same continent, I feel your support and love always pulling me home to you. You are the best thing that has ever happened to this restless soul.” And then with his eyes full of adoration and in a husky voice, the groom spoke of his love for her, “Thank you, Colleen, for being so amazing; you are my sunshine. I am the luckiest man in the world, and this is the happiest day of my life,” Everyone loves a wedding story. But how much better is the story if witnessed over and over in expertly-captured images and natural audio? Couples whose fortune it has been to find Brent and Vanessa McKellar know that such treasures exist because they possess their own wedding heirlooms created for them by The McKellars | Wedding Cinema. Although locally based, The McKellars | Wedding Cinema has become one of the top cinematography businesses in the country. Vanessa and Brent have crisscrossed the nation working their film magic from Seattle to Baltimore to Cincinnati, Charleston and Austin and against such backdrops as the metropolitan downtown, the beautiful redwoods, a southern plantation, and clear ocean waters. But a further look at the success of The McKellers Wedding Cinema first begs the telling of Brent and Vanessa’s own beautiful story. It all began when Vanessa Berry was just an imaginative pre-teen spending much of her time turning the pages of Martha Stewart's Wedding Magazines and dreaming about her some-day wedding. Thoroughly captivated by the romance of the beautiful pictures, she fell foreverin-love with all-things-wedding. Time passed and Vanessa enrolled in the University of Texas and majored in Radio/TV/Film with the specific intention of becoming a wedding videographer. Upon graduating she established her own cinematography business: Vanessa Berry Productions. Then, only a year into her filming, and as cupid would have it, she fell forever in love with Brent McKellar, her creative, tender, good-looking, dream come true guy. They married (a lovely story in itself,) and Vanessa Berry Productions became Vanessa McKellar Productions. Though Brent had a full-time job, he stood as Vanessa's number one fan and helped her in the business whenever he could. Soon, it became obvious that with his unique perspectives and his desire to preserve a family's history, it just made sense that he should quit his job and come on board with Vanessa. Again the production company's name needed an update, and today they are The McKellars | Wedding Cinema.

Before long their team grew to three and then four members. Noble is now 2 1/2 and Mission is 6 months old. “It's a great fit,” smiled Brent when asked about the closeness of their work and home lives. “We love and enjoy each other's company, and we get to work together and have our boys with us.” To be sure, every film these two produce is a beautiful blend of their joint talents and perspectives. “Brent keeps me grounded so that the films aren't too frou-frou, and I bring the woman's intuition and point of view to our work,” said Vanessa. So how do the McKellars go about shaping an heirloom film unique to each individual bride and groom? First, each wedding story begins before any shooting is done. The McKellars talk with their clients to find what makes them different, and what's important to them. They draw inspiration for the story’s filming through these discussions and from other perspectives. For instance, they gather ideas for beautiful shots from the wedding venue, the wedding style, the time they are allowed to interact with the wedding participants, and to what extent the participants allow the cinematographers to shoot “out-of-the-box” film. They know, too, that an uncomfortable wedding party makes for a film that isn't reflective of the bride and groom’s nature and attitude toward their special day. That’s why they believe being a husband and wife team is a great advantage to them. Being “all boy,” Brent instinctively interacts well with the guys, as does the passionate, vivacious Vanessa with the girls. This puts everyone at ease so the resulting wedding story is a snapshot of the couple's lovely day and a keepsake that the bride and groom both will want to treasure forever and share for generations. With all this being said, The McKellars are adamant that the greatest contributing factor to their success is that they are cinematographers, and not videographers--the latter suggests a passive stance, whereas the McKellars are active in the filming process. “We do our best to let

the couple's day unfold naturally, but we will jump in to get an engaging or exquisite shot to enhance the energy or beauty of a couple’s film,” Vanessa said. After each shoot, comes the bulk of their work. Hours of footage must be cut, spliced, and then combined with music so that the film is a pleasing auditory and visual product. The McKellars go to their music source to find just the right tunes for each film, and choose only licensed, legally purchased, unique-to-thesituation songs for which the client would have no previous association. The music, therefore, gives the couple’s film unique and seldomheard songs that the clients can call “their own.”

NOV-DEC 2014  THE WEDDED BLISS  |

Still, clients can have a say in the music choices. “The films on our website and blog are delivered in addition to longer edits. The twentyminute feature film songs are either chosen by us or by the client,” Vanessa explained. Brent adds, "We spend a lot of time searching for just the right song for the individual couple’s story, and, so far, we have had no client claim not to love the music we chose for them.” In the end, each wedding takes 40-60 hours of post-production labor! “Sometimes creating our clients' stories put us in the middle of their lives, and we are honored to be there,” Vanessa and Brent both say. The McKellars crafted Kaylyn Bergfeld's cycleof- life trilogy (the love story, the wedding story and the birth story). She had this to say, “Brent and Vanessa have, without question, become a big part of our extended family. They probably know us better than most of our friends.” Two years before her wedding to Brad Birdsong and before they even set their wedding date, Kaylyn made sure that the McKellars were available to film. “They were that important to us,” she confessed. “They were open to our ideas and made us feel so comfortable during all three shoots.” As an employee of one of Tyler's best photography studios, Donna Cummings Photography, Kaylyn revealed that she and her boss, Donna, often recommend The McKellars to any bride interested in having her wedding story preserved on film. “You want a

good photographer, but today video is just as important. We like and do business with other videographers, but The McKellars | Wedding Cinema is just a different deal!” she declared. “Most of our stories are full of happiness, but some are poignant and painful,” admitted Vanessa. Those they captured for Sara and Billy Jack Brawner were both. While their wedding and reception was lovely and joyous, the story they created of their stillborn daughter's funeral was bitter sweet. Though painful, it was one of love, hope, and this couple’s belief in the salvation Jesus Christ offers and his promise to hold his children even in the broken heartedness of losing a child—a narrative that gave witness to the impact little Willa's life made on all in attendance. “Brent and Vanessa first filmed my sister’s wedding and after seeing it, we knew we wanted The McKellars | Wedding Cinema to make our wedding film,” said B. J. “Not only that, but we trusted them to responsibly tell our story and to respect and stay within the bounds of our wedding style. The McKellars always do what is best for their clients. So many companies don’t do that, rather they do what looks best on their own blogs and websites. They refuse to be tied down by industry standard. Later, we were especially thankful for the compassion and honesty with which they created the film of our daughter’s funeral,” he added. The McKellars craft beautiful, memorable wedding stories for each individual couple. But the McKellars also excel in other film areas. Often they film personal and corporate documentaries, recital memoirs, birth stories, cycle-of-life heirlooms, public service announcements, small business promotions, non-profit fund raisers and promotional films. In one of their unique film categories, Family Gathering, the McKellars stand back and let a family interact together while they record the gestures and voices. These films capture the sound of children’s voices at that age, and it becomes an auditory memory that photographs alone cannot offer. In order to produce for their clients the best cinematography films possible, The McKellars have invested in state-of-the-art equipment and are one of the few studios in the country to film in digital High Definition and vintage Super 8 film. They want it known, though, that they are not tech geeks. Instead, they are artists who have worked with some of the country's top vendors such as Jose Villa, Tara Guerard, Party on the Moon, and whose works have been published in the industry's most respected blogs, such as Style Me Pretty, Green Wedding Shoes, and Wedding Chicks.

The McKellars tell beautiful stories with natural audio and video. They record and present each client with his or her own film on which is preserved raw emotions, subtle nuances, faces of joy, looks of love, authentic voices, and expressions of pain—the precious essences of each client's unique celebration of life. In the end there are no long, drawn-out videos, but rather films that give the viewer just enough to “leave ‘em wanting more.” Brent and Vanessa McKellar are a self- 31 proclaimed “husband and wife filmmaking duo who tell the intimate story of folks becoming husband and wife.” Their business is a success not only because of their individual and combined talents, but because of their commitment to honest hard work, their capacity to love people, to grieve and rejoice with them, and their obvious love for the work they do. Theirs is a story of character and passion. Today they live in Tyler, Texas with their two boys and they have what they consider to be the best job in the world, and they’re living happily ever after….

Talk to your photographer about scheduling bridal party formals at the venue 3-4 hours before the ceremony. The flowers are at their peak; hair and makeup is fine-tuned; the kids are still clean; and there’s an air of anticipation. Your photographer can split the formals to take as many images as possible without the bride and groom seeing each other, then completing the session after the ceremony. This reduces the time your guests have to wait at the reception and the newlyweds, eliminate missing out on any part of the festivities.

HAIR & MAKEUP CHECKLIST

9-12 MONTHS BEFORE YOUR WEDDING ❏ Determine your beauty budget. Don't forget to include any pre-wedding treatments, such as facials, in your plans.

❏ Encourage your wedding party to make a decision on their hair and makeup services too. ❏ Start a beauty binder with notes and pictures hairstyles and makeup looks you like.

If you're considering a new haircut or color for your wedding, now's the time to try it all out!

❏ Schedule a trial bridal design and make up application. Don’t forget your veil and pictures!

Schedule hair & makeup for you and your bridal party early enough on the big day to meet your photographer for pictures! 1 MONTH BEFORE YOUR WEDDING ❏ Get a trim and touch up your roots if your hair is colored. ❏ Begin an optional at-home tooth whitening treatment, or schedule a professional one. ❏ Get your final facial to ensure maximum glow for your wedding. 2 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR WEDDING

6-9 MONTHS BEFORE YOUR WEDDING ❏ Begin skincare treatments (facial, back facial, microderm) and hair removal programs with your aesthetician. ❏ Discuss your hair style, color, and length goals with your hair professional for your big day. ❏ Begin a manicure nail treatment regimen to ensure the strength of your natural nails.

If you and your party plan to do your own makeup, start playing with different colors, looks, and styles! 3-6 MONTHS BEFORE YOUR WEDDING ❏ Schedule hair and makeup appointments for the big day! ❏ Begin conditioning treatments on damaged hair and continue up until your big day!

❏ To release tension, enjoy a relaxing massage for yourself and your groom. ❏ Enjoy manicure and pedicures along with bridal party ❏ Schedule a haircut, men’s manicure, and a facial for the groom. 1 WEEK BEFORE YOUR WEDDING ❏ Confirm all beauty appointments. To save time, pre-pay for services scheduled before the day of the wedding. ❏ Get brows, bikini line, etc. waxed. ❏ Apply self-tanner if you're using it, or schedule a professional application for the day or two before. ❏ Start packing a bag with everything you will need for the big day. ❏ Give clear directions to the wedding site to everyone in the bridal party.

Discuss arrival times and arrange for a bridesmaid to deliver any hairpieces or accessories to the site so you don't have to worry about keeping track of them on the big day.

This would be a great time to schedule a relaxing mani/pedi party for you and your bridesmaids!
