reality wedding stories MAy 14th, 2011 :: Serbian Monastery in Milton & Trinity Hall in Kitchener Photography by Alicia Riley Photography (www.aliciariley.com) Story by TheWeddingRing.ca

A big, fabulous Serbian wedding When Daliborka Rakanovic and Nenad Rundo met at a mutual friend’s birthday party, Nenad had made the mistake of having too many drinks in too short of a time. He literally fell on Dali mid-dance, before promptly passing out. While Dali rushed to rescue him with some water, Nenad woke up and disappeared from the party. They didn’t see each other again until they ran into each other by chance at a cottage. Luckily for Nenad, Dali says that this time, she saw him in a different light… “He was really nice, really funny. I had so much fun with him.” In fact, the first thing she did upon returning home was break up with her boyfriend at the time. “Two months later, we started going out.” For four years, they carried on a long distance relationship (Kitchener to Toronto) and saw each other mostly on the weekends. Nenad says he loves Dali’s smile. For Dali, she loves that he always makes her smile! It was July 18th, 2010 when Nenad took Dali to the 51st Floor (180 Panorama, set atop the 51st floor of the Manulife Centre) on Bay and Bloor. “I thought he was going to ask me and since I couldn’t wait I asked him and he pretended not to know what I was talking about.” The couple finished dinner, Nenad got the cheque, and then he invited her out to check out the view once more. By this time, she’d given up on getting a proposal that night. “But once we were on the balcony, he took out the ring and asked if I would marry him.” Right away, they knew who their photographer would be. Dali had known Alicia Riley, of Alicia Riley Photography, since college. “I knew that she can record the story of the whole day through her creative eye.” Not only did Alicia record the day, but she admits she found herself falling in love with the old traditions and song (all of which were in Serbian) that made up this big, fabulous May 14th, 2011 Serbian wedding. “Unlike traditional Canadian weddings, the couple is revealed to each other prior to the wedding after the bride is finished getting ready in her home,” Alicia explained. In fact, the pre-ceremony events were the bride’s favourite part of the day. Gathered together at her Aunt’s house, Dali explained, “There were so many people and 6 • The Wedding Ring Magazine | www.theweddingring.ca

• Seating plan: “I would never do it again!” • Multiple locations on a tight timeline: Dali & Nenad ran about one hour behind most of the day.

• The pre-ceremony family party with accordion music, singing, mingling, eating, drinking and in some cases, meeting for the first time. • Bidding on the ‘fake brides’.

Adding to the sentiment of the ceremony and the beauty of the Monastery, two priests chanted, in Serbian, throughout the entire ceremony. “It was truly amazing,” says Alicia, who was busy capturing the moments and location on camera. The reception took place at Trinity Banquet Hall in Kitchener. Their wedding colours of Royal Blue, Silver and White played throughout the feather décor. The bride carried white roses and wore sparkling silver heels beneath her gorgeous but simple bridal gown. Dali wore Swarovski Crystal earrings and bracelet set, given to her by her Motherin-Law. Nenad wore a sexy hugo boss suit. Since Dali and Nenad’s wedding included 320 guests, two locations and a tight timeline, the day got a bit stressful at times. In fact, for most of the day, they ran almost a full hour behind schedule! Keeping up with traditions, multi-city events, big families and an eight-person wedding party is easier said than done! “We had to improvise!” they told The Ring. All in all, this couple had the stylish, tradition-filled, fun wedding they were looking for. Dali’s advice: On the day of the wedding things will go wrong, but if you have an easy attitude about it you won’t notice and either way you will have fun. Let the people around you take care of the problems that might arise. After all, it’s your day. ■

everybody was in great spirits. People were singing. We had two musicians playing accordion - which is a tradition. People were drinking, eating, laughing, singing... It was a blast!” Dali says it was also at her Aunt’s house where the groom and his party of about twenty people came to “buy” her. Alicia explained, “The day kicks off with a ‘buying the bride’ tradition where they dress a man as a woman to reveal himself first - as a joke – before the real bride comes out, to get everyone laughing and starting the bids.” The purpose is to put everyone in good spirits and break the ice between family members that are meeting for the first time. “It gives everybody a chance to sort of relax a bit and have a good time.” After cocktails and comedy, it was time to prepare for the 2pm ceremony. Dali and Nenad chose the Serbian Monastery in Milton Ontario for their location. Alicia remembers thinking that the Monastery looking like something out of a movie, sitting atop a grand staircase in the forest, in what felt like the middle of nowhere. “The Monastery was painted floor to ceiling with murals laced in gold detailing. Gold accents were everywhere, incense filled the air, there was even a ‘crowning’ ceremony,” describes Alicia who felt like she was at a royal wedding. Dali says that the crowns are part of the traditional Orthodox church ceremony. “The crowns are a visible reminder of the crowns that await us in Heaven. But the crowns also serve a more immediate purpose: the bride and groom have just become the King and Queen of this newly created family.” The bride and groom took a sip from what is called the Common Cup of Better Life. This tradition denoted the “mutual sharing of joy and sorrow and the token of a life of harmony”. It also impresses upon the couple that they will bear one another’s burdens. Dali explains, “Their joys will be doubled and their sorrows halved because they will be shared.”

Vintage Inspired VOWS

September 4th, 2010 :: The Clearing, Sheddon & The North American Railway Hall of Fame, St. Thomas Photography by Dudek Photography (www.dudekphotography.com) Story by TheWeddingRing.ca Both Matthew Smith and Evelyn Jolly say their union was a long time coming. Evelyn told The Ring, “Matt had been actively pursuing me for years before I decided to go on a date with him... Once I finally let down my guard I became smitten with him in a hurry.” Matt proposed to Evelyn on Friday June 11th, 2009 on the back deck they had just finished building together. They were enjoying a glass of wine, surrounded by freshly planted flowers when Matt got down on one knee and popped the question. It was subtle, sweet, and for Evelyn, it was the perfect proposal. Matt and Evelyn knew right away that they wanted a September wedding. They felt September would be the perfect month “because the weather is usually fantastic.” They now laugh about it, admitting, “We were wrong! It was overcast, very cold and very windy that day. But at least it didn’t rain!” But with an outdoor ceremony in their plans, they knew they’d found THE location in The Ring when they came across a review on The Clearing (a wedding location in Sheddon, Ontario). The couple instantly fell in love with it’s natural beauty. As if in warning that weather can always play a part in anything outdoors, it actually poured rain on the day they viewed The Clearing. But with a space so gorgeous, they opted not to worry about weather. Matt and Evelyn chose The North American Railway Hall of Fame in St. Thomas for their reception. It had all the character they were looking for. “The entire building was under construction as part of a restoration program. There was a certain charm to the paint peeling walls and the squeaky floors that I just couldn’t ignore,” remembers Evelyn. Being the creative one in the relationship, Evelyn took charge of most of the wedding planning. She knew that she wanted something a little bit different and decided on a vintage theme. “I wouldn’t decorate our home with contemporary items, and to me, a wedding should be just as personal as the things you surround yourself with at home.” They wanted all of their guests to remember their wedding. “What better way to do that than having a vintage inspired wedding in today’s modern society?”

10 • The Wedding Ring Magazine | www.theweddingring.ca

She is so amazing in the way she shows her love for me and people around her. It is very inspirational and makes me love her even more each day. To reflect the season, Evelyn chose Marigold Yellow for their primary wedding colour. She liked it because it was close to Fall’s burnt golds and oranges and yet it still had a summery feel to it. “It seemed like a wonderful way to emphasize the changing leaves of autumn and sunny summer skies.” The invitations were created by Evelyn. Each invite was ivory with a gold ribbon and had a blue vintage button. Evelyn personalized each invitation with a floral stamp and sprinkled them with embossing powder. She used the same design for the programs, seating chart and place cards, tying the style throughout the day from beginning to end. And so, on Saturday September 4th 2010 at 3:00 pm, the couple exchanged vows in front of ninety-six of their friends and family members surrounded by greenery and overcast (but dry!) skies. Guests were treated to a traditional home-style, sit-down meal of garden salad with dinner rolls, roast beef and roast chicken, oven roasted potatoes and green beans served with gravy - all of which they finished off with a cherry cheesecake dessert. The wedding cake was a combined effort of friends and creativity. A friend of the family, who ran a cake shop, supplied a combination of cake and cupcakes for the day. Using a three-tiered stand that was made by another friend, chocolate cupcakes with light yellow icing were placed on the lower two tiers. The top tier held a white, contemporary round cake. Evelyn’s sister then made whimsical little ‘bride and groom’ birds to top the sweet display.

details

Evelyn’s advice for other brides is to not “sweat the small stuff” although she admits that sometimes, this is easier said than done. “That being the case, drink lots of wine!”

Matt and Evelyn hired two florists for their wedding. One to create fresh floral bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres, and another to take care of their floral centerpieces and table accents - loose stems of lisianthus, curly willow and weeping eucalyptus placed in mason jars and spread out between the large centerpieces. Also among the flowers were eclectic elements such as stacks of old books, candles and freshly picked pears. In keeping with their yellow theme, Matt’s groomsmen wore matching suits with yellow ties with yellow pocket squares using the same material and colours as the bridesmaids’ dresses. The girls wore floor length strapless dresses with their choice of shoes and jewellery for a personal touch. Matt and Evelyn hired a string quartet for their ceremony. “It was absolutely amazing and made for a magical walk down the aisle.” They borrowed Matt’s father’s 1929 Hudson which added to the vintage theme. The car helped give the bride and groom a grand entrance into their reception, and it played a part in some fabulous photos as well. Evelyn found her photographer, Dudek Photography through a recommendation by her sister. When she checked them out online, she was blown away and knew she had to have them for her wedding. “[Damian Dudek’s] talent is hard to come by. His quality of work is outstanding and I enjoyed every minute of working with him. Dudek Photography made our day very relaxing and fun. He’s given us memories that we can look upon and enjoy every day.” Each time Evelyn and Matt look through their photos, they say they’re reliving their day all over again. “It takes us back to that very moment.” When the events came to a close, the bride and groom sent each guest home with a mason jar filled with the layers of dry cookie ingredients required for their favourite cookie recipe. Evelyn added a square of floral fabric tied with twine to the top of each jar with a recipe card attached, fitting in seamlessly with their overall décor theme. For Matt and Evelyn, their wedding day was the perfect vintage day they’d dreamed of. ■

A family affair on a grand estate

August 21st, 2010 :: private family estate in Maple ONtario Photography by Irina Photography (www.irinaphotography.ca) Story by TheWeddingRing.ca Audrey Lupke (our cover bride!) and Barna Moricz are both actors by trade, playing roles in television and movie titles such as Papertrail and Killing Moon (Audrey), Jason X and Gilmore Girls (Barna). But it was the first scene they ever played together – one from Good Will Hunting, one of Barna’s past movies - that started off this couple’s love story. Barna fell in love with Audrey’s loving, understanding and giving personality. For Audrey, she loved that Barna is sweet and authentic. She says he has a good-natured soul. “I admire his youthful take on life, his creativity…” It was in their second year together that they were hiking through a forest in Niagara Falls on the way to the Whirlpool Rapids. They came upon a tree that had numerous people’s initials and names carved into it. Right away, they were inspired to carve their own two initials ‘A + B’ into the bark, amidst the scattering of others’ declarations of love. “On every trip to Niagara we were always excited to see if the tree was still there.” By the Easter long weekend in 2010, they’d been together for seven years and it had been a long time since they’d made it to Niagara Falls. They decided to book a hotel and head to the forest. As Audrey approached their favourite tree, she saw a new

14 • The Wedding Ring Magazine | www.theweddingring.ca

message carved in the bark. It read, ‘Aud – will you marry me?’ Barna got down on one knee and said “… so?!” Audrey says, “I was in shock… Of course I said yes!” She then carved her answer into the tree. “It was a truly magical moment.” Their wedding would be all about family, friends and love. They chose their date, August 21, 2010, based on the best month for Barna’s family to travel to Canada from Hungary to be a part of the celebration. It gave the couple just four months to plan. Luckily, they had some help. “The wedding planning was a family affair!” explained Audrey. “Everyone pitched in to help…” And instead of adding stress to the process, the couple says it bought everyone closer together. Being avid photography fans, the bride and groom hired Irina and Mikhel of Irina Photography to cover their day. “We instantly liked them. They are warm, professional and they kept us on track!” In fact, one of their favourite moments of the day was their photo shoot. “Just us, hanging out and taking photos, goofing around and having fun... It was the most time we got to spend with each other all night!” In an impulsive moment, they hopped onto a golf cart (that had been brought in to help transport Audrey’s Grandmother down the back hill of the property) so that Irina and Mikhel could get some fun shots. For a location, they chose the large, beautiful backyard of Audrey’s parents’ estate in Maple, ON as their backdrop, where Audrey’s sister had been married a year earlier. “It was my Mother’s dream come true, to have both her girls marry at our family home that they have owned for almost thirty years….” They didn’t worry about the wedding being a repeat performance of her sister’s event. We have very different personalities and tastes.” Barna and Audrey looked at it like a blank slate they could personalize. “We were, in a sense, creating the space. It was a lot of hard would but definitely worth it in the end.” Audrey’s Mother did all the flowers for the bouquets and boutonnieres as well as created a ceremony arbour from shells the couple had brought back from a trip to Key West. Barna created coasters out of tree stumps they’d collected from their backyard. Lavender was used in colour and in scent, reminding Audrey of her Opa who had passed away years before. Audrey said, “It was his dream to see my sister and I marry.” They also used her Opa’s old wheelbarrow to display the packets of lavender lemonade that guests would take home as gifts.

Their wedding theme was ‘Country Fresh’, ‘ Country Vintage’ and ‘Rustic Charm’ with trees playing a big part in the accents –representing their Niagara Falls tree. Periwinkle blue and lavender were their colours.

reality wedding stories

Black boards were used for signs and messages, an idea they got from an antique store. For their main ‘Audrey + We did not want anything formal. Barna’ sign, they used an old gold-framed vintage mirror Our goal was to have a fun, easy-going that had been sitting in their basement for years - “We put it out for a garage sale twice, with no takers.” Irina, of Irina night with family and friends. Photography, suggested they place a black umbrella overtop of the sign. A big tree in the backyard became ‘The Family Tree’ when they tacked family photos all over it. The tree representing their Niagara Falls tree, their love of family, and the joining of their families together – and it became a focal point of the outdoor wedding space. “Memories are so important to us. The tree symbolized the joining of our families… It was such a treat to see our guests gather around the tree and try to figure out who was who.” Timing and weather were among the biggest dramas (and comedies) of the day. Audrey was getting her hair done at the house as rain began to threaten the outdoor ceremony. “My brother in law came into my parent’s bedroom in a big rush with a massive wire cutter (at least 3-4 feet long). He informed me that he was about to cut down the arbour of sea shell strips to bring them over to the tent.” Caterers had begun to move ceremony chairs to the tent since the rain wasn’t letting up. “I will never forget the anxious look on his face - I took one look at him and said thank you for checking with me first.” Audrey asked him to wait until the last possible moment. “Thankfully the rain let up and we got to go with Plan A… Minus the chairs!” Audrey and Barna love the oldies, so at 6pm, they were married, exchanging matching wedding bands engraved with ‘Stand By Me’ (a message based on the B. B. King tune, which also served as their first dance song later in the evening). Their ceremony songs were Here, There and Everywhere and Here’s Comes the Sun by The Beatles, Everyday by Buddy Holly, and Wouldn’t It Be Nice by The Beach Boys. Audrey was classic and stunning in a simple, flowing gown with touches of crystals to catch the light. She wore her hair up in a bun with a diamond and pearl encrusted comb. Sparkly flip flop style sandals were perfect for the grassy setting. Barna looked dashing in a simple black suit with a light periwinkle tie. The receiving line was long, but the couple felt it was important to speak with everyone who attended their special day. They chose long tables and had casual seating. ‘Welcome Cocktails’ – lavender lemonade and mojitos – were served in small mason jars. ‘Butlered Entrees’ were passed to guests by servers of 10tation Catering (www.10tation.com) in lieu of the typical sit-down wedding meal. To kick of the dancing, Audrey and Barna took the floor with Stand By Me amidst 140 of the people who are closest to their hearts. Large parasols (Audrey’s sister’s idea) hung from the reception tent’s walls, as did three ‘laundry lines’ of memories from Audrey and Barna’s childhoods and dating years. A dessert table was set up later in the evening, offering Kawartha Ice Cream (www.kawarthadairy.com), German pastries (Audrey’s side of the family is German) and Hungarian pastries (representing Barna’s side). From start to finish, rain or shine, the wedding was everything they wanted it to be and more. But it flew by. “Enjoy the little moments,” advises Audrey. And when things go wrong, “Don’t despair. You are celebrating your special day with your family and friends. Everything will work out the way it was meant to be.” ■

HAIR & MAKE-UP

Virginia from Evolution was taken back to the movie Grease, “this was a time where adolescents were coiffing their hair and styling it up.” Angie Keller, owner of Jacha Minerals used her Mineral Liquid Phototouch Foundation in Linen($38) & Mineral Sheer Veil in Champagne($30) as a base for this look. For the dark, winged eyes she chose Mineral Shadow in Pearl & Platinum($15.50 each, 3 for $28.50) and used her slimline pencil in Black & Volcanic Ash Mineral Eyeshadow to create the fifties inspired wings. Angie added a bit of colour to the cheeks with her Mineral Blush in Rose Marbel ($17) and Luxury Lipstick in Impulse ($18) for the stunning red lips that were popular in the fifties.

fashion & style THE HIVE

Vince, Owner of Evolution says the 60’s was an era of true art for hairdressers. “It was a time when people were starting to get creative with their hair and experiment with different shapes. The beehive was a popular look and one that we’ve recently seen on the runway. For me, it was a time of true inspiration and vision in the art of hair. Hairdressers started to build foundations to create these illustrious shapes and styles.” The look was complete with a Rhinestone “Zig Zag” Head Band (La Creme, $39.95).

MAKEUP

For a softer look, Angie used Mineral Liquid Phototouch Foundation in Linen ($38), Mineral Sheer Veil in Champagne($30) Mineral Gemstone Finishing Powder in Corrector($32). The eyes were inspired by the MOD look of the sixties with Mineral Shadow in Azurite & Rock Crystal, Ice cap and Blue Zircon with Titanium($15.50 each, 3 for $28.50). Angie added colour to the cheeks with Mineral Blush in Adobe($17). The look was complete with VibranC Lip Tint SPF 15 in Sea Breeze($16) and Luxury Gloss in Pale Petal ($20).

The Ostento by Pronovias was the ideal choice for our sixties bride, Samantha. With its ‘V’ neck and back and crystal horizontal beading, this short and chic dress (worn by Samantha Wymes) is a fun option for a sixties inspired bride.

The OLIVIA BY ROSA CLARA with its plunging V neckline and criss cross back, this gown (worn by Julie Hutchinson) reminded us of something Farrah Fawcett might have worn in the seventies. Crystal Embellishments and a chiffon, A line style make this the perfect option for brides that can’t get enough of the disco era.

HAIR & MAKE-UP

Sabrina from Evolution instantly thought of Farah Fawcett for seventies bride, Julie. “This iconic style was all the rage and hairdressers loved the free flowing waves and the messy, untamed look.” Angie went for a natural, ‘less is more’ look for the seventies with Mineral Liquid Phototouch Foundation in Linen($38), Mineral Sheer Veil in Porcelain($30), Mineral Gemstone Finishing Powder Corrector ($32), Mineral Gemstone finishing powder in Corrector & Mineral Sheer Bronzer in Aruba($36). Keeping with natural, earthy tones, the eyes were accented with Mineral Shadow in Amazonite, Sandstone and Umber Stone & slimline pencil in Brown ($15.50 each, 3 for $28.50). For a beachy glow, Angie used Mineral Matte Blush in Rose Marbel($17) and Liquid Lustre lipstick in Vixen ($19.50)

80s GIRLS

JUST WANNA HAVE FUN This Destiny gown by Maggie Sottero made us think of Cindy Lauper with its ruched crystal organza and oversized rosette. This strapless, fit a flare with an A line skirt and corset back is a fun way to bring the eighties to any wedding day.

HAIR & ACCESSORIES

Jamie from Evolution was inspired by the sitcom “Blossom”, when hair was swept to the side and curls were popular. Kim Rasokas took the liberty of teasing the 80s neon colours and rubber accessories with a few updated versions of the same, trading rubber neon bracelets from the 80s for Silly Band bracelets of 2011 - in neon colours, of course! Shelagh’s look was completed with a feather filled Hot Pink Hair Clip (La Creme, $49.95).

As her base, Angie used her Mineral Liquid Powder Foundation in Porcelain($35) & Mineral Sheer Veil in Champagne ($30). 2011

An Expert Tip by Cindy Andrews of She’s So Beautiful Inspird by the Royal Wedding, brides are leaning towards classic elegance and lots of lace more than ever. Flower accents and bling on dresses is big right now, as are mermaid and trumpet fits. Jewelry is still very much based on the type of dress and occasion. Bold and statement pieces are gaining in popularity. The most popular bridal gown colours this year are off-white, ivory and diamond white. Flowers, feathers and bird cages still seem to be the most popular accessories with the brides that come through She’s So Beautiful’s doors. The trend emerging at our shop for Bridesmaid dresses is to choose one colour yet allow the girls to choose their own style that best fits their own body types. Fall weddings are popular in 2011 and 2012, making black, green, burgundy, and brown among the most popular colours of the season for bridesmaids gowns.

She’s So Beautiful (www.shessobeautiful.ca) is based out of Dundas Ontario and reviewed in the Hamilton area of The Wedding Ring. The shop is known for eco-friendly gowns for brides.

MAKE-UP TRICKS for Spring brides

An Expert Tip by Angie Keller, Make-up Artist and Creator of Jacha Minerals

Wash away the winter blues with some amazing new spring hues! A big trend right now in makeup and a must have look for brides this summer is to achieve the look of translucent, luminous skin, along with subtle elegant colours on the eyes and lips. Foundations filled with talc and heavy pore clogging ingredients are not going to help you achieve this look, so toss away your heavy winter makeup and replace it with light iridescent mineral makeup! For the more adventurous bride, add some excitement to the natural look by using soft monochromatic shades, balanced by beautiful contrasting pops of colour. Makeup trends are inspired by what’s hot in fashion and this season it’s all about

print!!! Don’t just leave prints on the runway, Jacha Minerals Safari Bronzer in Congo ($36) helps bring this trend off the hanger and into your makeup kit.

And let’s not forget the lips! Again this year, it’s all about bold, bright lips, and this seasons shade is pink! Don’t think you’re a lipstick gal? Head on in to your

local beauty counter to find a shade that’s right for you. Even if it’s not the brightest shade of pink, it’s about finding a shade you’re comfortable, and confident wearing. Just be careful with lipsticks, I assure you, once you find the perfect shade, you will want to keep buying more!

Jacha Minerals offers make-up artistry, their own line of cosmetics, as well as make-up parties for the bride and her bridesmaids. Angie (photo, above) explains, “We help you find the perfect spring foundation match, teach you how to apply amazing new spring shadow colours, and find that beautiful lipstick colour you have been waiting for.”

reality wedding stories May 4th, 2011:: Palmetto Bay Plantation in Crawfish Rock in Roatan, Honduras

From Personal Nightmare to Paradise Wedding Photography by Captured Soul Photography (www.capturedsoulphotography.com) Story by TheWeddingRing.ca Lowanna Kraemer first spotted Greg Patterson after orientation on their first day of college. “He was the cutest guy around,” she remembers thinking. The two ended up spending the entire afternoon together. She started sitting in on his Life Drawing class so she could spend more time with him. “Technically, many of our first dates were spent... drawing nude models!” They were engaged New Year’s Eve, 2010. The couple knew they didn’t want to get buried in wedding planning. They found their location in Roatan, Honduras, originally suggested by their photographer, Michelle Kauntz from Captured Soul Photography and then by their travel agent, Dawn Fairbanks (a DW specialist) who had just come back from the island. After comparing some locations, they chose the Mayan Princess Beach Resort. “We couldn’t resist. The beaches and resorts were beautiful… The activities were plentiful and affordable. The island itself seemed to be a secret tropical paradise.” With the help of Dawn, wedding photographer (who also specializes in DWs) Michelle Kauntz of Captured Soul Photography, and the wedding coordinator at the resort, the planning process flew by without a hitch. Greg, a former graphic design student, designed the stationery himself, including a wedding week program that outlined the group excursions and wedding event details. of through photos, emails and phone calls. Dawn remembers, “Lowanna was an extremely organized bride. I wasn’t worried about her Destination Wedding at all.” And then the unthinkable happened. Eight hours before they were due to take off from Toronto’s Pearson Airport, Greg and Lowanna had been running last minute errands. As soon as Lowanna reached into her purse, she knew her passport was missing. She had been using her passport as ID in lieu of a Driver’s License, so it was always within reach. But that Sunday afternoon, it was nowhere to be found and an eighteen hour nightmare began. The couple retraced their steps, driving to stores that Lowanna had visited over the previous few days, panic growing with each step. “We had no luck. It was really gone… My beautiful tropical wedding really felt like it was never going to happen,” Lowanna remembers. Lowanna took a notarized photocopy of her passport to the airport. But when they arrived at 3am at the airport, Lowanna was turned away. To confirm her nightmare, the plane - which was filled with friends, family, a photographer, and the groom - left the runway at 6:30am. Without the bride. When Greg found out Lowanna wasn’t allowed on the plane, he knew she’d make the wedding. “I knew she’d somehow manage to make it there... She’s very resourceful.” Lowanna immediately called Dawn for help as she began

He was the best thing to ever happen to me. Within the first year we had already moved in together and I knew this was really it. I couldn’t imagine growing old and sharing life experiences with anyone else. making her way toward the downtown Toronto passport office where she then sat in front of the office - in the rain, with her luggage - until it opened at 8am. Dawn worked on finding another flight to Roatan. There was no guarantee she’d find one since Roatan is so remote and doesn’t necessarily fly multiple times a week, much less twice in a day. “I was going to get her on a plane heading towards Roatan, one way or another,” says Dawn. “There was no way I was going to let her miss her wedding!”

May 4, 2011 at 4pm ‘island time’. On the day of the wedding they left sandalwood fans on each of the chairs to help keep guests cool beneath the sun. There had been a miscommunication as to what the terms ‘legal ceremony’ and ‘symbolic ceremony’ actually meant on the island, so they tied the knot to a ceremony written by them (Thank- you Internet!) and officiated by a member of the group. The couple had fun writing their ceremony.

Whether it was the look of pure panic in Lowanna’s eyes or the heart of a sympathetic passport agent, Lowanna broke red tape records and got her passport within forty-five minutes of the office opening. Meanwhile, Dawn had found an emergency 10:45am flight heading to Roatan that would be leaving in less than two hours and that had a connecting flight with only a twenty minute buffer.

Bridesmaids wore light chiffon dresses while groomsmen donned blue dress shirts and tan kakis pants rolled up into Capri length shorts. The bride’s gown (designed and made by a close friend) and accessories were “retro with a Marilyn Monroe influence”. To tie in, the guys wore Capone style hats. The necklaces worn by the bridesmaids, not to mention most of the bride’s accessories, were created by the bride.

On the island, the groom was beside himself, unsure if his bride would even make it to the altar. Michelle emailed back and forth with Dawn as things progressed so that she could update and reassure both guests and the groom that Lowanna was in fact working her way towards Roatan. With a minimum two-hour check-in time at Pearson, the drama wasn’t over yet. Dawn told The Ring, “It felt like I was on the phone with Lowanna for hours.” They both admit that neither had a minute of sleep. “I think we were both afraid to put down the phone! I wanted to make sure she got on that plane.” Lowanna arrived just one hour before takeoff. At the end of her rope, she gave her cell phone (with Dawn still on the line) to the ticket agent. Between the two travel professionals, Lowanna was able to get her ticket, get through customs, and get on her plane with just minutes to spare. It wasn’t until the flight attendants told her to turn off her phone that she ended her call with Dawn. Realistically, there was a good chance that Lowanna’s twenty minute stop-over wouldn’t be enough time to catch the next plane, yet luck played its hand again. Her connecting flight had been delayed by a half hour for a systems issue and she was able to board just in time after literally racing through the airport to her gate. “I had never run so fast in my whole life. As soon as I got on the transfer flight I burst into tears.” Even though it surely felt like a lifetime, Lowanna arrived in Roatan just eight hours after her wedding group. She describes her experience in one word: “Unreal”. After an ecstatic reunion upon Lowanna’s arrival, the couple immediately shifted back into happy-nearlyweds mode and went about getting one of many parties started. The first event was a Welcome Dinner at which they handed out personalized canvas beach bags filled with events information and goodies such as personalized playing cards. For many of their events, the bride and groom escorted guests off the resort to fabulous locations, using the Mayan Princess mostly as their casual, exotic retreat. The bride and groom organized three different group excursions throughout the week, including a tour of the island, a sail and snorkel tour, and ziplining. “The tours were a great way to spend time with the group and see the island!” The beach wedding ceremony took place at the Palmetto Bay Plantation in Crawfish Rock, in front of seventeen friends and family on

The reception took place at the Plantation Restaurant & Bar in Palmetto Bay. Guests were treated to many locally-inspired dishes including fresh red snapper, coconut shrimp, filet mignon and roasted pork loin. Lowanna admitted that she teared up when she saw her flowers, but for this couple, it was all about the natural back drop of the white sandy beaches, the blues of the ocean and the towering palm trees. Aqua green and light yellow were used as accent colours. Music was provided by local musicians, Kristofer and the Kultura Band, allowing the bride and groom to walk down the aisle to an acoustic version of Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters. Their first dance was set to Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones. Greg and Lowanna found Captured Soul Photography online. “When I came across Michelle’s website I could not find a single photograph that I did not like... and I looked at every photo she had posted...” In addition to incredible photography, Lowanna and Greg credit Michelle for being a huge support for them throughout the whole wedding process. “She was available to help when I had questions and when I was looking for creative suggestions. Even more so on the actual wedding week, she was my rock. She helped keep me sane, taking charge when we needed her so that we were able to take care of other things. Working with Michelle felt like hanging out and having fun with a good friend.” Greg and Lowanna say their tropical wedding week was everything they could have imagined. Their advice for other brides: “Don’t spend too much time stressing over details because on the big day you will be so overwhelmed with emotion and excitement you will not even notice them...” Oh, and: “Definitely keep your passport under lock and key!” ■

SCOUTING JAMAICA Whether you’re planning a beach-side wedding with the surf swirling around your feet or a cliff-top ceremony with a backdrop of gorgeous ocean views, Jamaica truly has something for every couple, on any budget. We recently had the pleasure of attending a Destination Wedding and Honeymoon Fam hosted by the Jamaican Tourist Board (www.visitjamaica.com). With our fabulous tour guide, Racquel Queensborough, we scoured some of the country’s top destinations for the best places to say ‘I do’. Along the way we found out why they say “Once you go, you know.” And what we know is that we love, love, love Jamaica!

With two pools, daily activities, nightly entertainment, a spa, wellness centre and, one of our favourite things, unlimited golf (mandatory caddy required at a nominal fee) there really is something for everyone. The resort redefines the all-inclusive vacation, including motorized water sports, unlimited golf, snorkelling, breakfast in bed, couples massage classes and much more. The average wedding at Couples Negril has approximately 10 guests but offers intimate weddings for just the two of you (witnesses provided at no additional charge). Our favourite location, the Tree House can be converted into a beautiful ceremony and/or reception location that is both intimate and secluded (max of 6 for dinner). Rockhouse was one of our favourite hotels in Jamaica. The boutique hotel stretches across the cliffs of Pristine Cove. The Couples Negril 34 rooms have thatched roofs with private sun bathing decks, nestled in tropical lush gardens. The resort boasts a 60 foot cliff-top horizon pool and two award winning restaurants: one serving “new Jamaican cuisine” on a balcony suspended directly over the water. Ladders and stairs carved into the rock lead down to the water for easy access to swimming and snorkelling on the reef. Enjoy spa treatments in the cliff -edge cabanas, or inside the eight room garden spa. Whether you’re planning a small, exquisite wedding ceremony, or an elaborate, weekend wedding, filling the entire hotel with friends and family, the exceptional, experienced staff will help create your dream wedding. With the guidance of the Rockhouse Wedding Planner, all of the details are handled in a smooth and effortless manner for a truly stress-free wedding day. OCHO RIOS When Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica he described Ocho Rios as “the fairest land mine eyes have ever seen.” Home to waterfalls,

river flows, grassy hills and sandy coves, Ocho Rios is also Jamaica’s playground full of attractions such as the Dunn’s River Falls and Mystic Mountain (home of the famous Jamaica Bobsled ride). Sandals Royal Plantation lays claim to an incredible variety of natural and manmade bounty. Characterized by luxuriant greenery, mountains that soar down to meet stunning beaches, plus the worldrenowned, Dunn’s River Falls. Sandals offers an on-site three-bedroom private villa and seven additional categories of suites within the main hotel, all featuring impeccable Butler Service. There are three exquisite gourmet restaurants to choose from and a vast wine cellar, specially selected by their resident Sommelier. Guests flock to its popular Caviar and Champagne bar. With wedding packages to suit every taste, this is the kind of place that leaves you with nothing to do on your special day but Sandals Royal Plantation celebrate. We’ve seen a lot of RIU hotels on our assorted fams and vacations but RIU Ocho Rios has to be our favourite (and that’s saying a lot). Beautiful beaches, amazing views, and the service and amenities that you expect from a RIU.

A SPECIAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

Destination Wedding

An Expert Tip by Marlin Travel’s AbsoluteWedsite.Com Here at AbsoluteWedsite, we know that more and more couples dream of having a destination wedding, and we love helping them make their dreams come true. There are many reasons why some couples choose to get married away - traditional weddings can cost thousands more than a tropical wedding, some couples want an intimate group, and some want to celebrate their union for a week or start their honeymoon immediately! Whatever the reason you choose, one thing is for certain: this is one trend that is gaining popularity. Our top destinations are the traditional Canadian favorites: Mexico and the Caribbean. Canadians love to get away from the harsh weather we get for some or much of the year and let loose and have some fun in the sun! While the most popular months for weddings here at home are during the summer months, Mexico & the Caribbean are beautiful year-round! That’s not to say that there aren’t some months which are more popular than others. Year in and year out, the ‘should season’ proves to be the most popular time for destination weddings, and that’s for a couple of reasons and they’re tied in together. These ‘not quite winter/not quite summer’ times still offer an escape from questionable weather here at home but, since it is not high season down south, also come with great prices. April, May and November are the three most popular months for getting married away. What makes them even better is that we can get you great group discounts and special incentives (such as AIR MILES/reward miles, free luggage, upgrades and private check-in... just to name a few) when you travel with a group of ten or more! When choosing your destination, it is important to consider what it is that you (and your guests - they are a part of this too!) value most in a vacation. Are you looking for an actionpacked trip with lots of excursions and adventure? Are you looking for crystal clear turquoise water and a soft powdery white sand beach with palm trees swaying in the breeze? Are you looking for history and culture? Once you’ve determined what type of experience you are looking for, you can then narrow down your destination; then it’s time to choose 36 • The Wedding Ring Magazine | www.theweddingring.ca

your hotel! Do you want a large something-for-everyone mega resort? Or are you looking for a small, intimate hotel? Our team of 15 members can help you with this. We travel extensively and we check out the hotels first hand when we’re away - we like to keep up to date with what is going on! And since we’ve been there and we know what the hotels are like, we can help you choose the perfect resort! If youre looking for something different than the tropics there are many other options to choose from! You can get married on board a cruise ship (by the Captain, no less!), at a chateau in France or even at an exotic palace in India! The world is your oyster! Wherever that place is in your mind, we’ll get you there! There are many other important considerations to keep in mind when planning your destination weddings. That’s why it is so important to choose a qualified destination wedding specialist. We, here at AbsoluteWedsite, will advise you on the legal requirements for getting married abroad (such as document translations, required documents and what needs to be done to have your wedding legally recognized here in Canada). We will put you in contact with the on site wedding coordinator at your chosen property, assist in the confirmation of your wedding date in addition to coordinating all of the travel arrangements for you and your guests. We will advise you on the best wedding package to suit your needs so that your dream wedding becomes a reality. We even provide customized e-invitations or ‘save the dates’ for you to send to all your guests. On our website: www.absolutewedsite.com you will find our current specials, samples of our e-invitations, information about the honeymoon gift registry and many other services we offer.

An Expert Tip by Angie Keller, Owner of Jacha Minerals (www.jachaminerals.com)

With more and more brides choosing exotic destinations as the backdrop for their vows, we wanted some advice on getting glam for your destination wedding. We asked Angie Keller of Jacha Minerals for her advice on getting the perfect look. Angie told The Ring, “Generally I wouldn’t recommend doing your own makeup, but I feel destination weddings are sometimes the exception.”

1. Destination Wedding Specialist = peace of mind

A travel agent or wedding planner who specializes in destination weddings is a must. Also, getting to know your resort wedding coordinator at the resort is key.

2. ALLOW FOR TIME

While most of the resort wedding coordinators and local travel agents are regular email users, hotels and resorts are super busy, especially in high season. Don't expect instant replies to questions.

NEED-TO-KNOWs

for DW BRIDES

3. Make it legal

There are a lot of legalities to think about when planning a DW. Make sure you, your travel agent or your wedding planner check the residence laws in the country you plan to tie the knot in. Dawn Fairbanks of DestinationsByDawn.com says some islands require you to be in the country for at least 72 hours (three full business days, or in some cases, weekend days count too) before you can legally be married.

4. PHOTOGRAPHERS ARE YOUR FRIENDS

PHOTO: WWW.CAPTUREDSOULPHOTOGRAPHY.COM

If you look in TheWeddingRing.ca or talk to your Destination Wedding travel specialist, you’ll find the names of professional photographers who specialize in DWs. These photographers will travel with you, photograph candid and formal wedding moments, and ultimately become one of the group. Choose based on talent, shooting style AND personality! Hiring a DW photographer usually means purchasing a photography package as well as providing flight and accomodations for the trip.

5. Prepare to be hot IN THE TROPICS

Canada gets hot during the summer months, but it’s nothing like the intense, constant, and much stronger sun in tropical locations. Drink plenty of water, pack sunscreen and consider including parasols as part of your wedding party’s attire. Small fans make great gifts for your guests at the ceremony.

before you go....

on your wedding day...

• Invest in good quality makeup to take with you. How can you tell? It has nothing to do with the price tag, and everything to do with the ingredients. Since most destination weddings are in a hot climate, you want to find makeup that is water resistant, contains light reflecting properties and feels light on your skin.

• Use an eye shadow and a liner brush over your eyeliner to help set it in place, and help smooth out the line.

• Look for products that are talc and oil free, so that they photograph beautifully with little effort. • Pack a good translucent powder, mineral is recommended because you can layer it as the day goes on, and it still will look great. • Keep in mind you will most likely get a tan on your trip, so you might want to go a shade darker in your foundation and bring a good bronzer. • Have a makeup artist give you and your wedding party lessons before the trip. A lot of cosmetic companies will actually give you a discount on their products if you host a party, or let you redeem any costs in products, so this may actually save you money.

• Choose three eye shadow colours: one highlight colour (or lightest colour) to be used on your brow bone and on the inner corner of your eye, a medium shade to be used all over lid, and a darker shade to be used on the crease of your eye. • A good blush colour will help make your check bones look amazing, and add some depth back to your face after you use an all over foundation. • Use a bronzer in a C shape from under the check bone to the brow bone to add some contour to the face, and to make you looked sun kissed. • Don’t forget your eyebrows! Filling in the brows and proper grooming is essential in completing a makeup look. • Always set your makeup with a good translucent powder and keep it on hand to eliminate shine throughout the day. Finish the look with a great lipstick or gloss, preferably with some colour so your lips look great on film. GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 37

Belmont Flowers shows how using exotic flowers can add flavour and style to your wedding design and bridal fashion.

Photography by Make A Memory Photography (www.makeamemory.ca) In these arrangements, Vildana, owner of Belmont Flowers in Kitchener (www. belmontflowers.ca) mixed vibrant colours and textures for four sweet table arrangements and one sweet yet dramatic bouquet. She explains, “It is always more interesting when you use different textures. I created drama by adding a lot of flowers that will attract attention - partly because they’re not flowers that you see a lot of in weddings. I wanted the flowers to have that whimsical look but, at the same time, be mystical and dramatic (dark colors have that effect). With the vibrant color of the (turquoise) pots you should not go with something too ordinary or boring, because that color is not forgiving! Using those luxurious shades of plum, red and chocolate you are giving it that edgy and dramatic look.”

Exclusive Events created a fun and fresh vibe with this vibrant colour combination. The pink and green colour palette works so well because sign Pale they are on opposite sides of the tt De colour wheel, creating incredible contrast. Sticks and Stems used hot pink

gerbera daisies, roses, and dahlias, adding a ‘full of energy’ feel to the flower arrangement. The white hydrangeas, green button mums and trachyliums finish the stunning display. We love the real limes used to add an extra element of fun to the look. JoRa Wedding Cakes made the perfect pink and lime cake for this palette, reminding us of a tropical destina-

gorgeous photOgraphy Pricing it Out, Pre-Wedding Prep & Sweet Spots FOR POSING After the whirlwind is over, your wedding photos are the ultimate souvenir from your wedding day. Beautiful photos will last a lifetime, making a little bit of research and preparation a key part of your wedding planning. We’ve asked some fabulous photographers from Toronto to London to help us break down photographers pricing, packages, location secrets, timing tricks and a lot more. It’s all about looking fabulous in print, having fun with your photo shoots, and above all, making sure you choose the right photographer for you.

Hiring a talented, personable and experienced photographer is the first step to incredible wedding photos. But once couples have checked that off their lists, they can still play a part in the finished product too. We talked to two popular photographers who specialize in weddings, Lisa McCalla Grigorian of LG Weddings (www.lgweddings.com) and Sandra Dufton (www.sandraduftonphotography.ca) and got the inside scoop on tricks that will help your photographer get those to-die-for shots...

homework

Doing your homework (or rather, housework!) can help make your photoshoot go a lot smoother, according to Sandra. She explains... • Plan your flower delivery for about thirty minutes before your photographer is due to arrive. You’ll want shots of the bride putting on mom’s corsage and the wedding party posing with their bouquets. • Your parents’ house is sometimes a popular venue on the week of the wedding, used for rehearsal dinners, out of town guest accommodations, and more. That means it’s easy to unknowingly make a mess of Mom and Dad’s house and then leave them without a lot of time to clean up before the photographer arrives. Plan ahead to pitch in. Create useable spaces such as an area in the living room that’s free of wedding gifts, favour tags and other wedding supplies. Assign someone a five or ten minute vacuuming task. • Remove the clutter, not the personality. That means trying not to “de-personalize” the home too much. It’s wonderful for photographers to get details like a newspaper showing your wedding date, a copy of the speech lying on a side table, or the kitchen calendar with your wedding day marked. • Choose a clean bedroom with a freshly made bed and 44 • The Wedding Ring Magazine | www.theweddingring.ca

Staff at The Ring is often asked how much a bride should pay for photography, how photographers set their pricing, and what the difference between a $1000 photographer and a $5500 photographer really is. To get answers, we turned to seasoned photographer Anne Edgar (www. anneedgarphoto.com) who has shot over 500 weddings, to help us break down the anatomy of a photography package... Artistry | Some people just have an eye for great photography. Anne told The Ring, “You’re looking for beauty in the day so that when the couple is older they can look back and still feel beautiful.” Dana Snelling, a recent bride of Anne’s says “I love my pictures because they take my breath away every time I see them.” Education | Some photographers are self-taught and are brilliant but there is some theory that’s involved in great photography; lighting, camera/equipment, function, processing. Anne says, “They may be good, but they could be great with more education.” Experience | How long a photographer has been shooting and how many weddings they’ve done can make a huge difference on your wedding day. Photographers that are comfortable and know how to handle the crying flower girl or photo shy groom can make a or break your photos. Time | Between meetings, preparing for your wedding, shooting the wedding and post wedding editing, the then hang the wedding dress so the photographer can get shots of the gown. • Leave out accessories for the photographer to shoot, such as bridal shoes, perfume bottle, invitation and jewellery. • If shooting outdoors, make sure the grass is cut. Do a quick sweep of the deck and remove excess patio furniture for a more picturesque photo backdrop. Lisa suggests having your photographer document the pre-wedding prep! “There is so much action, emotion, and excitement that it makes for priceless photojournalism,” she explains. Having everyone ready (except for the bride) by the time the photographer arrives is also important, according to Lisa. And look for a room with large windows to get ready in, she suggests. “There is nothing quite like the softness of natural light...”

the ceremony Sandra’s ADVICE • Get comfortable handling your bouquet. Ask your florist for tips that will help. For example, with a very large “traditional” top-heavy bridal bouquet, I personally find it best to slip you thumb into one of the plastic hole notches for extra support instead of letting your wrist do all the work. • While it’s totally understandable that the bride and her wedding party will be nervous as they walk down the aisle, remember to try to relax so that you don’t hold the bouquet too high. You don’t want to hide the top of your dress from your guests. Walking at a relaxed pace will help! • The guys should make sure their boutonnieres arrive within plenty of time. Delegate someone who is experienced and can secure them to the lapel in the same spot on all guys. LISA’S ADVICE • Know the rules of the venue or wedding officiant in advance. That way, if they don’t allow flash or if they

amount of time your photographer spends on your wedding can make a big difference in pricing. For example, Anne estimates that she spends an average of 80 to 90 hours on each wedding she shoots. Equipment | Professional camera bodies, all of the equipment that comes along with it and backup equipment is costly and can help determine a photographers pricing. For Anne, having the right equipment as well as back-up equipment is critical, “If something goes wrong you can’t stop in the middle of the wedding and run to the camera store for batteries or a lens.” Editing | Whether your photographer retouches your images or they give you the raw files can make a big difference in pricing. Anne says, “A good picture that is just printed or is poorly edited is just a good picture. But that same picture skillfully edited can be a work of art.” It takes time and effort to become a great photographer and editor. Editor’s Note: Going hand in hand with experience (noted above), demand can also play a role in photography pricing. When a photographer starts booking up for most or all of their available Saturdays (there are only 25-35 Saturdays in the popular wedding season months) and they begin booking dates that are years in advance, you’re likely going to see their prices sitting higher than a photographer who is newer or has a lot of dates to fill. don’t allow photos for most of the ceremony, your photographer isn’t going to break these rules. • A ‘second shooter’ can help catch the ceremony from different angles and locations without having to move around too much or draw attention to themselves.

family shots Lisa’S ADVICE • If you don’t have much time allotted for family photos, ask family members to refrain from taking group shots alongside your photographer. This prolongs the entire process, plus there will always be one or two family members not looking into the professional photographer’s camera, but off to the side, where someone else is snapping their photo. • Consider that each group shot takes about 3 minutes when determining how much time is needed for family portraits. It can take several minutes to round people up for their photo. To save time, create larger groups and keep one-on-one poses for immediate family only. • Elect a family member to help gather the appropriate family members for each group shot. Give a checklist of each group pose (include names) to the photographer and a copy to the family member helping out.

location shoots

Lisa recommends bringing an extra pair of shoes or boots to protect your fancy heels from messy terrain. The same goes for all the girls in the bridal party. “Have flip-flops handy for if your feet start to ache from wearing heels all morning.” But don’t be afraid to get a little bit dirty. “No one will notice a few grass stains under the hem of your dress. And be open to photos that involve a lot of movement or even some poses where you may be sitting.” With outdoor shoots, you always have to be ready for rain. “Everyone in rain boots or carrying umbrellas can make for some cute photos.”

Choosing a cool, fun and different location for your photos will help them stand out, tell a story, and create memorable photos that you’ll want to show off forever. We talked to Todd Durnan, owner of TJ Durnan Photography (www.tjdurnan.com) and Sandra Dufton (www.sandraduftonphotography.ca) about their favourite spots to shoot. And while most photographers covet their most unique and favourite locations, Sandra and Todd were willing to share a few of their favourites... TODD’S FAVS Todd likes to shoot locations that offer a genuine play on contrast. “Contrast between people and surroundings that are rustic, rough, new, old, or anything else that helps make the setting special and the people in the picture stand out.”

Old buildings with history that can tell a story make for some of Todd’s favourite locations. “Take the Old Mill in Glen Morris or the Grain Works outside Waterloo. With their stone, timbers, and unique looks these backdrops offer a place for couples to spend time alone while still giving great light and details to play on.” Factory or work buildings often bring a genuine feeling to a shoot and an intimacy that can be unexpected Ultra modern buildings like the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo offer a unique backing for couples looking for that high contrast look that black walls and glass can

offer. This is great for a contemporary magazine-style shot.

Barns and rustic church back drops like the Grist mill in Waterloo give the opportunity to clash new with old with endless possibilities. Almost any alleyway can turn into your perfect urban backdrop for an engagement shoot or wedding formals. The simple blur of a gate or graffiti bring the focus back to the couple which is what its all about Cityscapes and main streets offer lots of details like doorways, windowpanes and movement of people and cars. Bridges and streams are also great locations to shoot a softer mood. The use of the water with the couple gives many options and old bridges are great for use with framing and light. SANDRA’S FAVS Sandra Dufton has shot well over 350 weddings in the London and surrounding area. Brescia College and the UWO campus on Western Road is a favourite for it’s amazing mix of greenery, fields, long laneways and fabulous architecture. Sandra says that its parking, easy access, and the fact that it’s easy to find helps too. “It’s also peaceful! Sometimes you are

the only wedding party there!” She suggests contacting the business office prior to the shoot, just to make sure there are no other special events going on the day of your shoot. The Old Court House (at 399 Ridout St) also offers amazing architecture. “It has wonderful lighting and treed areas. There are pleny of extra locations nearby for the bride, groom and wedding party to jet off to urban streets, alleyways, the Thames River, splash pads and more...” The Delta London Armouries (at 325 Dundas St) is a fabulous photo location. “It offers gorgeous brick areas, staircases, glass elevators, an awesome turret stair area...” The Armouries also looks good on the outside. “There are beautiful landscaped areas, street scapes, amazing architecture both in front and on the east side of building...” The Armouries is also a great ‘rain location’. “If the rain suddenly stops, you can pop right outside with out losing any precious photography time!” The Station Park Inn (at 242 Pall Mall St) is large , spacious and bright. “It has wonderful furniture and décor, amazing floors.” Sandra says that even the covered car port can lend some fun to a photo shoot. “There’s great perspective, brick-work, columns, glass.. There’ also an awesome glass building exterior just next door!”

PERSONALIZING your E-Shoot

An expert tip with Sweet Pair Photography (www.sweetpair.ca) Location, props and personality are some of the keys to engagement images that will make anyone smile and say ‘Awww!’ Rachel and Kurtis had been in the process of moving into a new home at the time they met Olga and Vladimir of Sweet Pair Photography, so for a unique approach, the photographers thought it would be fun to incorporate that into their shoot. “Sometimes ideas are very spontaneous.” So the couple posed for their engagement photos in the living room armed with paint brushes, in their favourite pie shop and on the beach, just to name a few locations. Kristy and Kevin dressed up in vintage apparel and posed at an old train station. “They were really into antique items,” remembers Olga and Vladimir. “They had a collection of antique pieces such as old suitcases, typewriters, old fans... We jumped on the ideas.” Teresa and Matt played Scrabble in a café, a game that they love. Sweet Pair Photography get most of their ideas from meeting with couples in person. Without those meetings, they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to brainstorm these fabulous e-shoot ideas. This is a great reason for getting to know your photographers before you strike a pose!

A DIY backyard wedding September 4th 2010 :: Troy & Sandra’s backyard

Photography by Latte Productions Photography (www.latteproductions.ca) Story by TheWeddingRing.ca In July 2005, Troy DeLaRonde and Sandra Van Dong met by chance while Troy was helping a mutual friend move from Waterloo back to Troy’s hometown of Thunder Bay. Despite his northern address, Troy and Sandra hit it off right away and soon began a long-distance relationship. “We talked on the phone every single day for hours at a time.” Later that year, Troy moved 1400+ kilometers to Kitchener to be with Sandra. They remembered, “We could hardly be apart and the long distance was becoming torture.” Although the details of how they got engaged on May 13th 2009 are a little bit blurry, Troy just laughs and says, “I think Sandra is still waiting for a proper proposal!” This isn’t the sort of couple to get stuck on traditions or technicalities. In fact, they decided to break tradition and not the budget by hosting a smaller DIY wedding. To make it happen, they stayed close to home. Very close. In fact, their entire day was hosted at their own backyard - and the backyards of their neighbours, at times! Aside from the obvious budgetary benefits of a home wedding, Troy and Sandra say, “Our home has a very special place in our hearts... We both fell completely in love with the house the second we saw it, and have loved it ever since.... We wanted to share it with our close friends and family.”

This is where we hope to grow old together and build so many wonderful memories in, we couldn’t imagine our wedding day in any other place. And so they began planning their September 4, 2010 wedding - the biggest house party they will probably ever have. For Troy and Sandra, hosting a backyard wedding came with challenges. The first challenge was ceremony location. They had intended to say ‘I Do’ beneath the old apple tree in the back yard, but when it started to rain at noon (the time the ceremony was supposed to take place). A last minute switch was required, moving the ceremony indoors to their living room, but they rolled with the changes. “It was still a very nice ceremony which was kept very short and with only a few members of our immediate family present. It was still perfect.” It was important for Troy and Sandra to incorporate both of their cultures into their wedding day. They were able to include some of Sandra’s Vietnamese background into the decor and food. Their colours were black, white and fuchsia as the design palette. “The choice of the colours meant that we could get really creative with the decor and with an accent colour that would pop and accentuate the details. We also wanted to bring a little bit of Sandra’s Asian culture to the mix.” To incorporate Troy’s Métis roots their day incorporated a Paddle Ceremony, which was actually a surprise, presented by Jim Bowles, a tribal elder and healer. The ceremony represents the union of husband and wife as they take the rest of their journey in life together, as though they are using one paddle. Because Sandra isn’t a fan of tuxedos (she says they make men look like penguins), black suits were key. They added a few personal touches, including bow ties that Troy made himself and vests made out of Asian silk. Troy had a fuchsia vest and bow tie with a black shirt, and his best man, Mason, wore a black bow tie and black vest with a fuchsia shirt. Sandra’s Maid of Honour, Jessica, wore a 48 • The Wedding Ring Magazine | www.theweddingring.ca

matching black and fuchsia dress. Because the wedding party was so small, with one person standing on each side, Jessica was able to choose whatever dress she wanted. Troy and Sandra didn’t want to leave out Daisy, their family dog, so they assigned Daisy the job of Ring Bearer and made her a little home-made vest to match the wedding party. With a few additions to their landscaping and some homemade decorations, Troy and Sandra’s yard was transformed for their reception. The couple got creative with their tables. They searched for old coffee tables and painted them and decorated them with wall paper to match their theme. It meant it was an informal dinner with casual, no assigned seating! “It was important that our friends and family got acquainted so this was a fun way to get people to converse sitting around coffee tables. We also made our own divider screens that were made of wood, and then hand painted vinyl again to match the theme.” Troy and Sandra made most of the food, several of their favourite dishes, themselves. The menu consisted of Asian crispy pork, homemade springrolls, gnocchi with meat sauce, barbeque chicken, corn on the cob and veggie fried rice. Two friends served dinner to the guests, buffet style. When it came to photography, Troy and Sandra didn’t want many posed shots. They chose Latte Productions’ for their portfolio and personalities. “[Photographers] Justin and Jennifer seemed like young, eager professionals, with a great portfolio. They were open to suggestions, and most of all, were great listeners!” Troy and Sandra say their favourite photos from the day are the candids. “Justin and Jennifer captured the essence of the day” They paid attention to all the little details that we put so much thought and work into and remembered everything on our wish list! They were so friendly and helpful throughout the day of the wedding...” Latte Productions even helped pass out cake! Before guests arrived, Troy and Sandra had emptied out their garage and converted it into the bar area for the evening. After dinner it lit up with lights and a disco ball and it became their own little “night club”. Troy and Sandra made their own playlists on an iPod and rented speakers so that they could pick all of their favourite music for the evening. Although it happened to be the coldest day of the summer and it poured rain, people got out their parkas and danced the night away.

Troy and Sandra’s neighbours even played a part on the wedding day. “They were very kind and let us use their yard space for over spill. The party went on into the night until 2 am and no one complained, even a bit! Even with the late night karaoke jam that broke out!” Because Troy and Sandra both love candy, they decided to give their guests little mason jars full of their favourite eco-friendly soft candies. While the weather didn’t cooperate, Troy and Sandra didn’t let it stop them from having the perfect wedding day. Sandra’s advice: “Don’t sweat the small stuff... No one knows what you’re planning, so even if it happens a little differently than you planned, no one will know the difference. Remember who the day is for. And enjoy the planning... Once it’s all over, you’ll miss it.” ■

• make bow ties by hand for the guys • prepare food for guests • find and paint cool, old coffee tables in wedding colours • make vest for Daisy, the family dog (who is also the Ring Bearer) • decorate house and property • add landscaping accents • turn the garage into the bar • invite the neighbours!

FROM ROCK & ROLL TO Moulin Rouge October 10th, 2010 :: Carmen’s Banquet Hall, Ancaster Photography by Empirical Photography (www.empiricalphotographicarts.com) Story by TheWeddingRing.ca

Lucas Alexander Duguid and Laura Margaret Roberts were brought together by a chance phone call and some winning telephone karaoke. It was ten years ago, October 2000, and Laura was working at a call centre. Lucas called in to talk to a friend, one of Laura’s co-workers. When Laura put him on mute to look up the extension, Lucas - who thought he was on hold - burst into a telephone karaoke rendition of Bob Seger’s Night Moves. Laura was thoroughly amused and asked her friend to relay a message: “Tell your buddy he’s got a great voice.” The compliment led Lucas to send a message back - his phone number. A series of messages led to a series of real phone calls. “We just clicked right away,” they told The Ring. They started dating and that was it. The two have been together ever since - with Night Moves becoming ‘their song’. So when the two became engaged in fall of 2008, it only made sense that music would play a part in many of the elements of their wedding day. Luke and Laura set out to design a wedding that incorporated as much music as possible and “a very subtle Moulin Rouge look and feel.” The wedding colours were red, black and champagne. Luke and Laura set the date for October 10 2010, their tenth anniversary - they didn’t realize their date was the much-sought-after 10.10.10 until after they’d chosen it - and sent out invitations. Luke’s Brantford-based graphic and web design company, Octopus Red, provided the stationery for all 125 friends and family members. Guests were encouraged to tie in with the wedding theme and colours by dressing in black, champagne and red, and to be as theatrical with their outfits as they wanted. “The wilder, the better! On our wedding day we saw lots of show-type feathers, burlesque-style dresses, hats, and suspenders. We had our bridesmaids dress in mini top hats with feathers and veils and lots of satin and glitz. We really loved the drama of the red, black and champagne combination.” Luke and Laura chose Carmen’s Banquet Hall in Ancaster as both their ceremony and reception location. They liked that it offered a complete wedding package and allowed them to have the full day all in one location. The wedding party was made up of childhood friends as well as Luke and Laura’s own children Nadja, the Maid of Honour, and Sophia, the flower girl. Luke and his groomsmen wore tuxes with a Nehru style jacket. Laura’s dress was a Maggie Sottero gown that she found in Peterborough. “It was a steal at $1000!” Her bridesmaids all wore matching black gowns and carried feather fans. Because both Luke and Laura’s families are from the East Coast and both are of Scottish descent, a bagpiper (who was also their minister) piped in all of Luke and Laura’s friends and family before then performing a traditional hand fasting ceremony for the couple. Laura wore a pair of plaid lace-up heels under her champagne gown to tie in with the Scottish feel. Laura and her daughter Nadja both recorded songs for the wedding; Laura recorded Come Rain Or Come Shine by Billie Holiday for her walk down the aisle and Nadja sang Beatles tune, I Wanna Hold Your Hand for their first dance.

The couple knew they wanted to incorporate one of Luke’s family traditions into the wedding day and found that the cake cutting would be the perfect time to do it. “I have a very large family of about eighty that gather on Boxing Day every year and sing American Pie.” Before Luke and Laura began to cut the cake, their DJ announced that he wanted to do something a little bit different and asked both families to join together at the cake cutting table. As he started to play American Pie, everyone began to sing while Luke and Laura cut their cake. “It meant a lot to us. Both families are very musical and this was perfect.” Since Luke is a graphic designer, he actually found their Brantford-based photographers, Empirical Photographic Arts, through a firm in Toronto. Laura was very specific about the type of photography that she had wanted; something authentic to who they were as a couple and a little more creative than standard wedding photography.

The wilder, the better! We saw lots of show-type feathers, burlesque-style dresses, hats, and suspenders. Because Laura and her daughters are very allergic to flowers, they opted to get creative. Laura’s bouquet was shipped from Nashville, made by Flowers that Rock, a company that makes flowers and bouquets out of guitar picks and recycled guitar strings (LOVE it!!). The bouquet had a very special significance for Laura. Her father, who was a musician, passed away before he could walk Laura down the aisle. So Luke and Laura thought the rocked out ‘flowers’ it was the perfect way to have him walk his daughter down the aisle in spirit. As self-proclaimed ‘foodies’ the meal was extremely important to Luke and Laura. Several guests (including Laura and her daughters) have Celiac Disease and had a special meal of rice pasta. Vegan guests were also treated to their own customized meal. “The food was absolutely amazing, the seafood antipasto buffet before dinner was incredible. After the two pasta courses and two meat courses, our guests could barely breathe in their fancy clothes!” Laura, who owns Sophia Gluten Free Foods, made a completely gluten and dairy free wedding cake.

It was actually when Laura saw a picture of a groom in a coffin on the Empirical website that she knew D’Arcy and Angela of Empirical would be up for anything. And they were. At one point, the guys took their photo shoot to a café/train station where a live band had been playing. In a break between sets, the groom and his groomsmen posed with the band’s instruments for a rock style shot. “They did such a fantastic job, both D’Arcy and Angela were there for the entire day, from start to fínish.” Luke and Laura say that since the wedding, they’ve recommended their photographers to everyone they know. “We’ve even involved them in a charity project,” explained Laura. “We like that they are community-minded and think outside the box.Their ability to capture amazing moments speaks for itself.” Guests took home pumpkin cake truffles dipped in white chocolate and drizzled with caramel, made by Laura’s company. Luke’s design company created red favour tags for the treats. In the end, Luke and Laura were able to incorporate music and personality into every aspect of their wedding. They say their day was everything that wanted it to be. “The food was fantastic, the venue was spectacular, we were surrounded by friends and family, and there was little to no stress. It was a perfect day.” ■

Laura shares her advice... • Be true to who you are as a couple. Your vision doesn’t have to appeal to anyone but you. • Have fun, don’t stress about how the day will go and add elements that people will appreciate as fun and unique.

English Royal Historian and Alex Bomberg was speaking on security issues. And my job was to comment on all things wedding!

Above, Jane Dayus-Hinch with Royal Correspondent, James Whittaker.

When Global News and ET Canada asked Wedding Planner/TV personality, Jane Dayus-Hinch, to be part of their reporting team based at the media village at the Canada Gate (opposite Buckingham Palace) on the day of the Royal Wedding, she didn't think twice. So what does it feel like to have a seat in the media hub for the Royal Wedding? Jane gives brides in The Ring a behindthe-scenes, first-hand account of what it was like to be a part of (and report on) this fabulous fairytale wedding. The press attendance alone demonstrated just how globally important this wedding was. Back in 1981 [Lady Diana’s wedding], 550 accredited journalists and broadcasters descended to cover the royal nuptials. But for Will & Kate, the number was closer to 7,500. There were television networks set up from all corners of the world with hundreds of satellite dishes, miles of cables, parked trucks and various marquee tents. It was a hive buzzing with activity. The Canadian anchors were Cheryl Hickey and Dawna Friesen. My team for the day was television personality and interior decorator, Debbie Travis, and Fashion Reporter, Bronwyn Cosgrave who had both flown over from Toronto. Phil Dampier was the

In London, it was 9am when guests began to arrive at the Abbey. I was back on set and I could see on the TV monitors some of the guests arriving at the Abbey. Posh and Becks and Elton John, just to name a few… With every arrival there was a new dress, shoes, fashion commentators were having a field day! William arrived with Harry, looking calm and composed. He spoke with his uncle, Earl Spencer, and shared a joke with friends. I heard the crowds cheer as All media, including Jane’s team, reported from the ‘hub’, a scaffold tower with individual ‘pods’ where each television network had their own view of Buckingham Palace and the Mall.

the Queen and Prince Philip left the Palace. She smiled radiantly and I’m sure felt very proud of her Grandson. As Catherine’s car came into to view, we were all straining to capture a glimpse. The clock (and Big Ben) struck 11 am and history was in the making…

“Watching the TV monitors, seeing all the flags flying, the policemen lining the route, and the sea of red, white and blue was a sight to behold.” The 1900 guests were assembled, all the Royal family were seated, and the music was playing (The London Chamber Orchestra). It was captivating with all the glitz and the glamour, the spectacle of the pomp and ceremony and I felt very proud to be British. Catherine’s gown was a delicate cream colour with

On her head was the Cartier ‘halo’ platinum and diamond tiara, loaned (something borrowed) to her by the Queen. It was understated and added the complete finishing touch. [After the ceremony] I took a walk outside the campus and was immediately in amongst the crowds watching on the screens. It was 200 people deep – some even had ‘periscopes’ but the sound quality was excellent. To see people in fancy dress costumes, all the flags, picnics, and friendly smiling faces was a pleasure. I didn’t have long, but to be walking through and taking in the atmosphere was a memory. All the prayers in the world had kept the sun shining and the rain at bay, and as the happy couple emerged at the Great West Door the sun broke through the clouds and the world clapped and cheered! Changing the way brides plan weddings • 59

Locally-focused and 100 Mile Weddings are an increasing trend across Canada. It’s all about thinking, purchasing and planning locally. And for brides and grooms, that means asking more questions and paying attention to the background story of the food, supplies and wedding accessories they choose for their special day. TheWeddingRing.ca has the opportunity to help brides and grooms achieve their dream weddings on a local scale in communities across Southwestern Ontario. Including this Hamilton Ontario couple...

When Lindsay Carlton and Joe Devereux got engaged in December 2010, they jumped right into the planning of their dream wedding. They wanted to keep the entire wedding - particularly their vendors – local. Linsday explained, “Supporting our community is an important element in both of our lives.” Using reviews in The Ring, she was able to find her caterer, Taste Fine Foods (www.tastefinefoods.ca) and florist, Sticks and Stems (www.sticksandstems.ca), both of which use resources from within Ontario. Lindsay also found her wedding gown shop in The Ring, She’s So Beautiful (www.shessobeautiful.ca), a Dundas based gown shop that features previously loved dresses and consignment opportunities for the eco-friendly bride. To find which wedding experts are in your neighbourhood, which ones use only recycled, 100-mile, organic or otherwise green materials, just check out interviews and reviews in The Ring. We’ve done the research so that you don’t have to!

SURVIVAL TIPS

1. PRINT PERSONALIZED LABELS Shows are home to some of the best giveaways of the year. You have the chance to win items such as honeymoon getaways and huge online shopping sprees. Save yourself from hand cramps by printing labels at home. When you circulate through the various booths at the show, stick your labels onto the many ballots you’d otherwise have to fill out by hand. On your labels, include... • bride’s name • groom’s name • wedding date • address & phone number (these are sometimes optional, but you will want to at least include your city of residence) • email address 2. PREPARE TO CARRY ON Be sure to bring a bag with a comfortable shoulder strap, a backpack, or better, yet a bridal party (or the groom!) to help carry things. You’ll be given countless brochures, gifts and magazines and you don’t want to be left juggling them for hours.

COLOUR & DESIGN TRENDS by Cloydon Dreamdecor (www.cloydondreamdecor.com)

1. Brooch Bouquets - surrounded by vintage jewels create personalized and unique arrangements such as this gorgeous brooch bouquet (photo, right). 2. More floral alternatives for bouquets include painted paper flowers, beaded accents or buttons. 3. Liqueur sampling stations - wine and champagne stations will create the ‘wow-factor’ at any after-dinner station. [RWS BAR PIC] 4. Opt for non-alcoholic samplings with a specialty teas station, a kids mocktails station that serves Shirley Temples and Metropolitans with big red cherries in tall sunday glasses. 5. Add nostalgia to design and fashion. Recycle and wear your mother or grandmother’s wedding dress or incorporate your parents’ wedding photos into the décor. 6. Concentrate on colour. 2012 will feature a rich palette with a smoky cast. Look for jewel colours such as emerald, ruby, coral and peacock blue. On the other end of the spectrum, watch for what we call ‘Lipstick,’ with bold glossy reds and dark pinks paired with flesh tones. 7. Grey is the new black. Grey is the neutral ‘it’ color for this year’s weddings. Organic and natural, shades of charcoal, dove, stone, oyster and shell will be incorporated liberally into wedding color palettes photo (BROOCH BOUQUET): www.clickphotography.ca

and paired with vibrant hues to make the colours pop! 8. We’re mad for metallics & bold colour palettes! Whether it’s two bright hues with a metallic accent, or several metallic shades used together, brights and metallics will be popular choices for wedding colour palettes in 2012. Think gilded gold, shimmery silver and sparkling champagne - used alone or with accents of yellow, purple or teal. 9. Luxurious textures. Fabrics will bring a sumptuous, opulent vibe to 2012 weddings. Wedding dresses will feature 3D appliqué, layered light fabrics (tulle, lace, chiffon), romantic ruffles, oversized florals, and illusion fabric with eye-catching beading. 10. Layers & texture. Tables will be layered to dress up the reception, chair covers may be embroidered or beaded, and branchy centerpieces will dominate the wedding event.

ALTERNATIVE REGISTRIES When it comes time to choose a wedding registry, think outside the box. Brides and grooms have more options than ever before. WEDDINGREPUBLIC.COM offers a unique online ‘cash registry’. WeddingRepublic.com says it’s “a visual representation of your idea wish list.” WR gives couples the option to put literally anything on their registry, from tropical trips to big screen TVs. photo, LEFT: www.makeamemory.ca 62 • The Wedding Ring Magazine | www.theweddingring.ca

SWEET CEREMONY: LOVE LETTER EXCHANGE photo USED WITH PERMISSION OF Brooke Meyenberg www.etsy.com/people/LittleRetreats

Photo booths have become a popular trend for weddings. They are entertaining for the young and old, allowing everyone to let loose, have some fun and strike a pose! But a photo booth at your wedding just wouldn’t be the same without props! I was browsing Brooke Meyenberg, creator of the Little Retreats Etsy Shop website (http://www.etsy.com/people/LittleRetreats) the other day, who by the way is the crème de la crème when it comes to incorporating creative props into your photo booth. She has everything from distinguished mustaches, to whimsical masks, to Charlie Chaplin glasses! If you don’t have an Etsy-sized budget, turn your props into a DIY project. Head to your local art supply shop and look for either foam or super heavy double sided paper stock in any colour – preferably a colour scheme that matches or compliments your colours. All you’ll need are wood craft sticks and a glue gun and you’re in business!

CREATIVE CAKES

Wedding cakes are a fabulous opportunity to get creative with details while indulging in something sweet. This cake (photos, below, left and right) by JoRa Wedding Cakes (www.joraweddingcakes.com)

For extra romance, try adding a Love Letter Exchange to your wedding ceremony. Here’s how it works... 1. The bride and groom each prepare a love letter, including reasons why each chose the other to spend the rest of their life with. 2. On the wedding day, the Officiant will share the only two circumstances when the couple will unlock and reveal the contents to one another. Circumstance #1 is during a significant wedding anniversary or milestone in their marriage. Circumstance #2 is if time passes and serious doubts about their relationship causes the marriage to falter. Together, they should unlock the box, partake in the wine, read the loving words and be reminded of their wedding vows and the reasons they decided to marry and commit to eachother. 3. Following the Officiant’s remarks, the couple present their sealed love letters. Simona Cherler Gagliostro, owner of Urban Bride (www. myurbanbride.com) says apple green is the colour of the year and there’s no better way to indulge in this vibrant look than with some sexy apple green shoes (photo, right). But Simona also says that any colour goes when it comes to your wedding shoes, “Add a splash of colour to your wedding attire choosing wedding shoes in your favorite colour. It’s a trend that’s catching on and perhaps best of all, you can wear your shoes over and over again after your wedding day.” Photographer Heather MacEachern of HRM Photography (www. hrmphotography.com) chose the sweet, princess bride style gold and pink strappy heels (photo, bottom, right). She also chose the bold, blue heels with zippers and bows, the sparkly heels (photo, above, right) and the fabulous white heels (photo, top, left). Danielle Herakovic of Herakovic Photography (www.hrkvc. com) chose the stunning, red, blinged out peep toe heels (photo, far right). Having your wedding ceremony outside can be a breath-taking and memorable experience. But there is lots to consider when planning an outdoor celebration. Erin Lister, the Wedding & Special Events Co-ordinator at Elm Hurst Inn & Spa in Ingersoll (elmhurstinn.com) has overseen thousands of outdoor weddings. Here are her top Do’s & Don’ts for a perfect outdoor ceremony... • DO consider the comfort of your guests. Let guests know that your ceremony will be held outdoors so they can plan with appropriate clothing, sunscreen and insect repellent. If your ceremony is in mid-summer, supply water, fans and/or sun umbrellas. Why not get creative and print your program on a fan? • DO make sure you’ll be heard. Rent audio equipment to ensure that your vows will be heard. Don’t forget to ask if your site has access to power! • DO avoid certain scents. Some flowers and perfume scents attract bugs. You don’t want to be swatting during your ceremony! Talk to your florist about flowers that won’t attract insects, and apply your perfume later. • DO be on time. No one likes to be kept waiting, especially outdoors on a hot summer day. • DO protect your dress. Keep your dress pristine by renting an aisle runner.

Stay eco-friendly and choose real ones instead.

• DON’T forget your Wedding Party. Consider the weather and wind when choosing your bridesmaids dresses. Remember that stiletto heels sink into grass. And ask everyone to use waterproof make-up.

• DON’T be surprised by interruptions. Is there an airport in the area? You don’t want your vows to be drowned out by the sound of a passing airplane. Don’t be afraid to ask about any likely interruptions.

• DON’T light candles. Candle flames are difficult to see outside, and may blow out. If you want to light a Unity Candle, make sure it’s placed in a hurricane container, or consider a Sand Ceremony.

• DON’T count on good weather. Sometimes Mother Nature just won’t cooperate with your wedding plans. Have a contingency plan in place so you can enjoy the day regardless. Know who will make the final decision about moving indoors and who will be responsible for setting up the alternate location. And remember, in many cultures, wedding day showers are considered good luck!

• DON’T throw artificial rose petals. Artificial petals will need to be cleaned up.

HRM Photography 110 reviews & 1000+ votes 110 reviews and over 1000 ‘LOVEit!’ votes by brides and peers in the Southwestern Ontario wedding industry have earned HRM Photography the top spot - #1 ONTARIO – in TheWeddingRing.ca’s 2011 BCAs. From London to Toronto, Heather MacEachern of HRM Photography and her team shoot about 80 to 100 weddings each year and are one of the most popular photography teams in Southwestern Ontario. With offices in Toronto and London, HRM has a reputation for offering an adaptable, fashion-oriented shooting style, and for being in high demand. They know how to make a bride look and feel like a diva while also delivering on the things that matter most in wedding photography: capturing the day as it happens, and the emotions you’ll want to remember forever. Their image portfolios and blog posts each showcase fun, romantic, fashion-filled, bridesavvy memories that brides in The Ring can’t help but love. This year marks the second time that HRM Photography has taken the title since she first won #1 London Wedding Expert in 2009 in The Ring. “Heather smiled and laughed with us all day… Everything we asked of her, it just happened. She blended, was watchful, aware of when we were tired, our feet were sore or when we just needed a moment to ourselves. My guests loved her! …Heather’s pictures were the perfect diary of our day. My husband’s grandmother was unable to come to our wedding due to distance and health; with Heather’s pictures we built a book that told the story of our day. Heather captured moments in our day that are irreplaceable. My grandfather has dementia and Heather shot the perfect moment where he recognized me for just a split second - I thought I would only have that moment, but thanks to Heather I have it forever. HRM is fantastic, professional, and the perfect addition to any couples dream wedding memories.” - Meghan “Booking HRM was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding… [Heather] is very creative and spontaneous, and she is never short on ideas for what the next photo should be. If you tell her your vision, I have no doubt she can make it happen… The first time we looked through our photos we were astonished at all the special moments that were captured, even ones when we weren’t aware our photos were being taken. Another surprise was all the photos of our family and friends who were there to share in our day and mean so much to us. We absolutely love and cherish all of our photos. We hope to work with Heather again in the future and recommend HRM to all our friends.” – Lake “We booked HRM Photography for our wedding in August 2009, and I can say from experience that Heather is the best photographer a bride could ask for! An incredibly creative and talented professional, Heather was able to beautifully capture all of the special moments of our day. Heather and her associates are energetic, organized, and FUN - we had a blast while taking our wedding party photos, which added a great element of fun to our day.” - Rebecca “I always had a love affair with gorgeous editorial photography. I knew that’s exactly what I wanted and was tireless in my search for the perfect wedding photographer. I made lists, looked at multiple books, stalked blogs, and interviewed the heck out of multiple photographers... I knew [Heather] was the one when I opened her portfolio and saw this perfectly captured image of a groom, teary eyed, watching his bride walking down the aisle. At a closer glance, you actually saw her reflection in his eyes. I was SOLD... Heather was by far the best decision I made during my wedding. Our marathon 20 hr shoot which included 2 wedding ceremonies and a reception - was insane and incredibly memorable... My pictures are relaxed, gorgeous and truly quite epic. I would recommended Heather in a heartbeat to anyone who is looking for a truly creative and talented photographer, not to mention a genuinely fun person.” - Jana
