♥ = INTERVIEWED, RESEARCHED & REVIEWED @ WWW.THEWEDDINGRING.CA

For Catalina Berbecaru, meeting Giacomo Berther at a birthday party in 2009 seemed like fate. After all, Giacomo just happened to be visiting from Montreal and Catalina almost missed the party. But instead, she unknowingly made a life-changing decision to stop by the event where she’d meet the man she would one day marry. The connection between them was instant. The two hit it off instantly. In fact, within six months, Giacomo found himself proposing. The proposal took place in Dominican Republic and Catalina remembers being stunned when she first saw the ring. “It was the first morning on the resort. I had mentioned to him that I’d always wanted to see the sun rising over the water. So, he forced me to get out of bed... We went down to the beach and sat in the sand and he gave me a note to read, explaining how much he loved me. Then he pulled out a pink box...” She said yes, loved her ring (particularly since it was one she’d earlier hinted at) and the two were engaged.

“We love each other’s sense of humour and the fact that we can always be ourselves. No matter what, we can always make each other laugh and we never stay mad at one another for long. Our personalities balance out our relationship perfectly.”

Catalina and Giacomo wanted to plan their wedding themselves. They agreed that they wanted to keep it relatively small and personal, and that they would focus on quality, big ticket items. There was no set budget, although Catalina jokes that if they did have one, they definitely exceeded it!

THE DRESS: San Patrick by Pronovias from Taylor’s Bridal in Elmira VINTAGE TRANSPORTATION: Total Eclipse Limousines in Mississauga. CAKE: Klara Johnson’s in Cambridge

They chose Catalina’s local church, St. John The Baptist Romanian Orthodox Church in Kitchener. The church was both beautiful and grand but also had an intimate feel.

And so, on July 14th 2012 at 3:00 pm Catalina and Giacomo were married in front of eighty-five of their closest friends and family. Bringing things full circle, they asked Lucian - the mutual friend who had introduced them at his birthday party three years earlier - to be part of the ceremony, “Lucian was the witness with his wife, Carmen. We felt it was appropriate to ask them to be our ‘Wedding Godparents,’ a Romanian tradition, since without them we never would have met!” Catalina and Giacomo loved that Cambridge Mill offers the flexibility of literally catering to each guests tastes. Guests were first treated to hors d’oeuvres including an oyster bar during cocktail

When it came to their theme, the couple wanted both modern and vintage elements. Giacomo wore a modern dark grey suit, white shirt and a sky blue Hermes tie that he bought in Italy. Catalina wore a vintage style Pronovias lace dress with lace straps that had a modern fit to it. A cathedral length veil was a perfect match to the dress. “My pearl earrings and bracelet were a gift from my amazing mother. ”

To add vintage to their grand entrance, the bride and groom arrived in a 1950’s Bentley. “The service from our driver, Gaston was amazing. He really completed our vintage theme perfectly. He even had a cute French accent!”

Catalina and Giacomo agreed that since they aren’t “very ‘matchy matchy’ type people,” they wouldn’t get too hung up on a colour scheme. So, while the colour palette for the day included grey, purple and green, Catalina chose a bouquet of pinks, peach, and ivory and Giacomo wore a white calla lily as a boutonniere. The reception at Cambridge Mill (cambridgemill. ca) offered a gorgeous location that wasn’t the traditional hall or golf course. “It is a very beautiful

and unique location being on the River... Modern but with traditional elements such as the brick walls.”

reality wedding stories “We had over a year to organize things. We did it all ourselves. It was definitely more time consuming over the last five months but throughout the entire process we made all the decisions together...it all came together because we had ample time and many checklists prepared.”

hour, followed by salad and pasta to start off the dinner. Then, each person in attendance was given a choice of entrees (we love this!) - a fish, chicken or beef dish. Dessert included a sorbet followed by a vintage yet modern wedding cake as well as a dessert table and a sweet chocolate fountain.

“The best part of his work though is how he captures the emotions of people in his photos...” Spirits Intrigued Photography was hired to capture the memories of the day. Catalina remembers her first meeting with SIP photographer, Alex, “We loved his take on things, the angles and colours he uses, as well as the pictures he takes of small details...” She remembers thinking from the beginning that working with him was more like working with a friend. “What we really loved was

FROM ONE BRIDE TO ANOTHER: “Do whatever makes you and your husband happy. Don’t let the opinions of others change your vision... Let the day unfold and don’t sweat the small stuff... f something doesn’t go exactly as planned, don’t worry! Always remember the day is about you and your husband to be joining lives, so the rest doesn’t matter!”

how you can tell the reason he’s in photography is because he really loves it.” Catalina and Giacomo can’t believe how many compliments they’ve received on their wedding photos. “The best part of his work, though, is how he captures the emotions of people in his photos. Every time we look back at the pictures we feel as though we are reliving that day... He captured the love, emotion and celebration of our wedding day perfectly.” To thank guests for coming, Catalina and Giacomo filled glass jars with multi-coloured Jordan Almonds that had been brought over from Italy by

Giacomo’s family. “In Italy, it is very traditiona l to use Jordan Almonds as wedding favours because they represent fertility in the marriage. So, we put them in little glass jars (that our guests can actually use to store spices later) and added green and purple ribbons and tags with our wedding date written on them.” Catalina and Giacomo say that their wedding day was special, intimate and better than they could have ever imagined, “It was an amazing experience and an amazing day because it represented our personalities, our relationship, and our love for each other perfectly.” ■ GET LOCAL. THE COLOUR OF LONG DISTANCE LOVE

Photography by Photobox Photography (♥) (www.photo-box.ca) | Story by TheWeddingRing.ca Wedding Date: August 25th, 2012 Ceremony& RECEPTION: Forest City National Golf Club (♥) in London (www.fcngolf.com) GUESTS: 205 INVESTED THE MOST IN: The venue & Lucy’s dress SAVED THE MOST ON: Groomsmen’s suits Lucy first met Trond at a mutual friends wedding in Germany. She was surprised by her first thought; “I said to myself ‘that’s exactly the type of man I want to marry’!” And her instincts were right... Lucy realized she was falling in love. “We balance each other out. I’m an extrovert, he’s an introvert. I make him laugh; he is incredibly kind and diplomatic. He’s the nicest man I’ve ever met”

Although an undeniable chemistry brought them together, almost 30,000 km would also keep them apart. With Trond being from Norway and Lucy from Toronto, the two kept in touch online, by phone, and with video chats. But then Trond found out a friend was getting married in Niagara Falls and he jumped at the chance to see Lucy again. “He asked me a year in advance to be his tour guide for that trip,” remembers Lucy. “So, approximately two and a half years after we met, he came to visit again.” Unsure if a cross-Atlantic relationship could really work, Lucy and Trond decided to take some time to 18 • The Wedding Ring Magazine { ONTARIO } | www.theweddingring.ca

think about it for a little while. If they both felt it could work, they would meet up again two months later. Lucy says, “We did decide we wanted to see each other again and met up in Reykavik Iceland for our first official date. Iceland was a surreal first date; we visited the Blue Lagoon.” Both Trond and Lucy knew they had something special and neither were phased by the flights back and forth, long distance phone calls or the massive distance between them. Knowing this was the real thing, Trond applied for a work transfer and moved in with Lucy in Canada. Trond proposed to Lucy at Toronto Music Garden, one of Lucy’s favourite romantic spots in the city. “He found a secluded area there that I had never seen. It was cobblestone with a gorgeous rock... He got down on one knee and proposed!” When they got back home, Trond had decorated their condo with rose petals. Champagne and strawberries awaited them as the song Marry Me played on the stereo. During the planning, Trond had to return to Oslo, Norway on business. Although it was sometimes difficult planning a wedding over email and Skype dates, Lucy says it was well worth it in the end. “We fully expect that our life will continue to be an adventure together just like our courtship.”

Forest City National Golf Club was the ideal location for their ceremony and reception. It was not only located in Lucy’s hometown of London, but its gorgeous lakeside setting, outdoor ceremony options, and ability to accomodate Lucy and Trond’s large guest list had had them booking their date there without hesitation. And so, on August 25th, 2012, Lucy and Trond were married in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in front of 205 of their closest friends and family. Lucy had always associated the colour pink with love, and so the couple made it their base for all decorating and design throughout the planning process. Pink can be seen in many elements of the day, including

FROM ONE BRIDE TO ANOTHER: “Don’t get so stressed out that you don’t enjoy it all. I wish I could go back and relax a little more, especially during the week leading up to the wedding!” the flowers, table designs, ceremony décor and the favours. Lucy took on a few DIY projects, with help from family. Lucy and her Mom picked out wedding invitations at a large craft store so that Lucy could put

them together herself. Lucy’s nieces “were the creative geniuses behind the favours”; mini bride and groom favour bags filled with chocolate kisses and all of Lucy’s favorite pink and white candies. Since the groomsmen were coming from Norway, Lucy and Trond decided to keep their attire simple and stick with Norwegian tradition. Lucy explains, “Norwegians don’t rent tuxes and don’t have large wedding parties. So we let the groomsmen wear their own suits and we bought them a tie and a flower. They looked amazing!” Although the couple lives in Toronto, Lucy wanted to purchase her dress, as well as the bridesmaid’s dresses and accessories, from a gown shop that was local to her London area wedding. Lucy explains, “I knew I wanted to go local... I was also concerned about storing my dress and/or shipping it from Toronto.” Photobox Photography was referred to Lucy by a work friend. After getting to know photographers, Kristen and Jeremy, and seeing their work, Lucy knew they were the perfect pair to shoot her wedding. “I was also impressed that they were a team and figured if one couldn’t get a shot the other would. They seemed down to earth and met with my Mom and I on the weekend at a [coffee shop] to discuss our goals.”

With a hectic schedule, Lucy also appreciated that Kristen and Jeremy were so accommodating during the entire wedding process. “They came to my parents home and did a photo shoot there and worked extra hours even though Kristen was almost nine months pregnant at the time of the wedding. She was such a sport she didn’t complain once... Even when I asked if they could take pictures of us at the railroad track!” Lucy admits that, while her wedding day was everything she could have hoped for, there was one thing she would do differently... “I would eat! I was so preoccupied at my own wedding that I barely ate... And Forest City made such an amazing meal!” For Lucy and Trond their wedding day was the perfect reflection of their love for one another, “It was the greatest day ever. I wish I could go back and play it all over again... It went by way too fast... Everything was perfect, from friends and family who attended, to the venue, to the food... Especially the photos - they were amazing!” ■

A New Orleans style wedding bride & groom: Emilia & Randy WEDDING DATE: September 2nd, 2012 CEREMONY: The Registry Theatre (www.registrytheatre.com) RECEPTION: The Walper Hotel (♥) (www.walper.com) GUESTS: 162 INVESTED THE MOST IN: Food & Drinks SAVED THE MOST ON: The DJ & the ceremony location Photography by Sylvia Pond Photography (♥) (www.sylviapond.com) Story by The Wedding Ring Randolph (Randy) Johnston and Emilia Strada are both familiar with the stage, having worked on it throughout their careers - Emilia as a Stage Manager and Randy as an Actor/Producer. In fact, they met at an after-party following a Christmas Pantomime that Randy was performing (Emilia had been invited by a mutual friend). They immediately hit it off and went on their first date, February 2nd, 2007. As Emilia got to know Randy, she appreciated that he could find the positive in just about anything. “He has a contagious, funloving style... He’ll always make you laugh or smile with his quick wit and twinkle in his eye!” Randy loved that they both had mutual faith and endless patience for one another. Four years later, Randy proposed to Emilia at Mohawk Racetrack on Valentine’s Day, 2011. Emilia remembers how romantic it was, “The grandstand was deserted, the moon was shining and snow was falling on the track...” She said yes, and within no time at all, they both dove into wedding planning. To keep things organized, the first thing Emilia and Randy did was make LOTS of ‘to do’ lists! They also dedicated time to internet research. “So much inspiration can be found online!,” advises Emilia, adding, “It helps to have a vision of how you want the day to unfold and then plan around that vision.” For two theatre lovers, hosting Emilia and Randy’s ceremony at The Registry Theatre in Kitchener was a fabulous opportunity to be true to themselves. It was the right size, the right price, and both the bride and groom had previously been involved in productions there.

“Have you ever been to a funeral in New Orleans? When a death occurs in the Crescent City, sad and somber music is played as the deceased is marched towards a service of remembrance to commemorate the loss. Afterwards, joyful music is played as the loved one moves on to something glorious. Today we gather together to witness an ending. The ending of our two friends, Randy and Emilia’s lives as single people. But don’t be too sad. If all goes well, we will see life’s next stage celebrated today as Randy and Emilia begin the next chapter of their lives together as husband and wife.” - Barbara Andrew, Officiant, All Seasons Weddings

Choosing a wedding theme was easy. Emilia and Randy share a special fondness for New Orleans and knew it would provide ample inspiration for their wedding. Emilia explains, “We are big fans of Dixieland music... My cousin, Everett Link, actually plays bass with the world famous Dukes of Dixieland... We thought about having a New Orleans funeral themed wedding.” [Between gigs, Randy actually used to drive hearse professionally for about ten years in and around Toronto] They decided to make their ceremonial processional look, feel and sound similar to a New Orleans jazz funeral dirge. The slow, seemingly sad walk down the aisle [to the tune, Just a Closer Walk WithThee] symbolized the death of their single lives. “Then our ‘relaunch’ as a married couple would be heralded with When the Saints Go Marching In...” But the brass band music and New Orleans elements didn’t stop there. After exchanging vows, the bride and groom led guests from the ceremony to the

reception (just blocks apart) in a traditional New Orleans ‘Second Line’ parade – a walk that was led by the live marching band, and that stretched from the ceremony venue to the reception venue. This is a popular tradition in New Orleans weddings and was a huge hit with guests. Emilia and Randy included two very special members of their family in the parade. Happy Leroy, their basset hound wore a tuxedo and Virgil, the parrot, joined the wedding party on their second line march. “The band continued to play us into the reception hall as guests ‘danced’ to their tables and continued the live entertainment through cocktail hour.” The Walper Hotel was an obvious choice because it was beautiful, and it was close enough to The Registry Theatre that timing would allow for their second line. It was also important to the couple to give guests the option of staying at the hotel overnight. Their wedding took place on a long weekend and they wanted to give their

THE SECOND LINE A live marching band, along with Emilia & Randy, led guests in a traditional style New Orleans ‘Second Line’ parade which stretched from the ceremony venue to the reception venue. our guests the convenience of staying overnight without having to leave the building! But it was the history of the building that really drew the couple in. “Louis Armstrong, Mark Twain and Winston Churchill are among those who’ve stayed there in the past. It’s a beautiful hotel and it’s in the heart of downtown.” They took advantage of extras like complimentary hotel rooms because of their Sunday wedding. And so, on September 2nd, 2012 at 3pm, Emilia and Randy were married with a New Orleans style twist that none of their guests would soon forget. They added some Italian items into their reception dinner menu, knowing that The Walper’s catering team could take care of their requests (The Walper has a reputation for incredible catering). Emilia and Randy told The Ring, “Our guests raved about the food and the service. Our menu included pasta, steak, chicken and vegan options.”

DIY projects contributed to staying on budget. Emilia and Randy did their stationery and some of their flowers themselves. Most of the budget went towards food and drinks, which was exactly what Emilia and Randy had planned. “We wanted to throw a great party for our friends and family.” And they achieved their goal, hosting a celebration that was filled with singing, dancing, wining and dining with friends and family. “A friend offered her DJ services for free as her gift to us. She also helped organize the evening...the schedule of events, MC, speeches... this was invaluable to us and we were so grateful!” “Our guests had fun, the band was entertaining, the venues were beautiful... and best of all, we got to marry each other!” Sylvia Pond Photography was chosen to capture the memories of the day. Emilia remembers seeing Sylvia’s work for the first time: “I loved her creativity

with the shots she chose, the locations...these elements really expressed the couples personality.” Then, when she met her in person for the first time, Emilia knew Sylvia had to shoot her wedding. “Sylvia is so open, easy going and fun loving... She is very open to suggestions and loves to experiment with colours and architecture... Her photos really captured the emotion and feel of our wedding...the fun, the love and the laughter.” Guests were given homemade wine to take home, (another DIY project done with lots of help from loved ones). In fact, Emilia and Randy say, “Many friends and family helped with all aspects of the wedding, from helping us bottle wine to helping us decorate the venues.” Emilia and Randy say that with help from friends and family, their wedding day was everything they could have hoped for. “The weather was perfect, our guests had fun, the band was entertaining, the venues were beautiful, the food was great, and best of all, we got to marry each other!” ■ GET LOCAL. A CHIC TORONTO CITY HALL WEDDING

Photography by Erwin Loewen Photography (♥) (www.erwinloewen.com) Story by TheWeddingRing.ca Wedding Date: March 30th, 2012 Ceremony: Toronto City Hall (www.toronto.ca) RECEPTION: Origin Restaurant & Bar (www.origintoronto.com) GUESTS: 40-60 BUDGET: "We didn't even make a budget. We spent a little bit of money on attire and accessories, and a little bit more on food and champagne. We pretty much said no gifts. We were already trying to loan out our belongings so the move across the continent would be breezy." Although Jasen (Jay) Rockliffe and Erica Cox had seen each other at many social events around Toronto over the years, it wouldn’t be until a snowy winter night, years after they first met, that the two would connect romantically. Erica remembers, “I was intrigued... I tend to fall for geniuses. That night he asked if anyone wanted to go tobogganing. Gleefully, I accepted the invitation and the joy expressed in our fun rides down the snow covered hill right outside his back door set in motion the future for Jay and I.” Although Jay planned to propose to Erica during a scuba diving excursion in Puerto Vallarta, the ocean was just too cold during their December 2011 trip. So instead, he presented Erica with a custom canary 26 • The Wedding Ring Magazine { ONTARIO } | www.theweddingring.ca

diamond ring at sunset on the beach the day before New Years. For Erica, it was not only the perfect proposal, she laughs that she was finally able to piece together why Jay was so adamant about checking in at the scuba shop every day. Despite their wedding excitement, the couple had another big change coming up, a move to California. In order to speed up the visa process and fit their wedding into their hectic schedules, a civil ceremony at Toronto City Hall was not only easy, it was a necessity under their strict time constraints. The pair decided that in sticking with a theme of simplicity, they would keep the ceremony to just the two of them. But when Erica’s girlfriends found out about their wedding plans, they were determined to be at their friend’s wedding, “I was glad to have such beautiful and supportive girls.” And the wedding list grew from there. “The cat was out of the bag... Jay invited his friends. I told my parents that Jay's parents were coming home early from their trip and my mom said she didn't want to miss it even though my Dad was just out of the hospital...he was a trooper. And so the wedding grew out of my hands... and we had lovely celebration.” Although their guest list grew, Jay and Erica were determined to keep their wedding day stress-free and fun. They invited guests by text message or

phone. Erica did most of the prep in the days leading up to their wedding because Jay was in New York City for meetings pertaining to his new job in California with Next Energy. front of the skirt entirely, “It was inspired by the November Rain music video...and it looked rad. I got a blue garter and added jewels to my shoes since it ended up being too cold that day to wear the heels I originally planned on wearing.”

FROM ONE BRIDE TO ANOTHER:

One last minute request that Erica was thrilled to have come through was her photographer, Erwin Loewen of Erwin Loewen Photography. Since Erica had worked with Erwin on photo shoots in the past, she was excited that he was available to shoot her wedding day.

“Try not to stress, it's not worth

“Erwin is awesome...it worked out great that he would be in Toronto and available, we were so lucky to get him! Since I've worked with him before it was a piece of cake. And so, on March 30th, 2012, Jay and Erica were married in front of forty of their closest friends and family. Erica and her girlfriends created custom flower head dresses for guests to wear, complete with ribbon and glitter in several different colours. To keep with her own personal sense of style, Erica picked up a vintage dress for $53 the day before the wedding and, with help from a friend, cut off the

You are the only bride, it's not like there are competing brides and you have to star of the show no matter what.” Jay also wanted to reflect his own personal style in his wardrobe and chose a jacket that “has a little more flair than the average jacket,” and Erica added white flowers to his baller cap. The couple even made a head piece for the “flower girl,” their French bulldog, Marley.

culinary delights that are extraordinary and very easy on the palette.” After dinner, Jay, Erica and their guests went back to the couple’s house for an impromptu after party. Friends and family danced to, "All You Need is Love" in the living room as more loved ones piled into the house to join the party with a toast to the bride and groom. By the end of the night, Jay and Erica’s house was packed with people dancing, singing and celebrating, “It was random and perfect.” For Jay and Erica, their wedding day was the ideal way to celebrate their up-coming journey together. “I'm glad it turned out amazing. And also that it wasn't as stressful as some weddings can be. Jay and I have a lot of friends all over the world that we meet on our travels and it would have been great to have all of our friends together for the celebration. But alas, the celebrating continues. And we are so grateful. It was different than I imagined, but I think the way we did it alleviated a lot of stress from our lives... And it goes to show that you don't need to break the bank to show you love someone.” ■

After the ceremony, the group moved to Origin Restaurant in Toronto for dinner and drinks. Since Jay is friends with the restaurant owner and, it was close to City Hall, it was the ideal place for a laid back and intimate reception. Erica adds, “Origin serves up GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 27

The two first struck up a conversation on Yahoo in late 2004, but when they finally met in person, they realized it had been a long time coming. Ashlee explains, “We had been in the same place at the same time on several occasions, going back four or five years... Our

first meeting felt like sitting down with an old friend.” Darryn proposed to Ashlee in the fall of 2009, right after they had been involved in a multiple car collision. Despite serious vehicle damage, they both came away with only bumps and bruises. “After realizing that we both walked away from a situation that could have been significantly worse, Darryn asked me if I would marry him... Now that’s romantic!” The couple wanted to combine customs from both Darryn’s South African Jewish heritage and Ashlee’s Finnish Lutheran roots. Handmade Kippahs were offered to guests, made by Ashlee out of chocolate brown satin from a pattern she found online. Ashlee also took on the task of creating the Chuppah that the couple was married under. Two traditional Finnish occasion cakes spelled out ‘Congratulations’ in both Finnish and Afrikaans. While customs and tradition were important to the couple, it was equally important to create a fun atmosphere with a sense of

humour. Darryn wore a black velour Calvin Klein smoking jacket and Ashlee chose a Blue By Enzoani gown. “With the A-line skirt, I was able to wear gym shorts underneath and be both glamorous and comfy on my special day.” Due to their action-packed day and Ashlee’s aversion to high heels, they had custom Converse All Star sneakers made, monogrammed with, “Mrs. Marcus” and “Mr. Marcus.” Guests arrived to an acoustic set from The Unseen Strangers, a bluegrass band from Toronto, “Their energetic performance set the tone for the evening.” A caricature artist drew silly portraits of the guests after the ceremony. Darryn and Ashlee created a ‘Guest Comic Book’ - a book of cartoons and comics they had removed the text from so that guests could add their own text. “It was probably one of our favourite souvenirs from the wedding.” And so, on Saturday, May 12th, 2012, the couple were married in front of a stone fireplace as the sun set at Argonaut Rowing Club. The venue was the perfect all in one

reality wedding stories

“Having a bit of a carnival atmosphere was a great ice-breaker. We both felt that our wedding needed to be fun and silly, but also mellow and comfortable... we decided to combine a wedding with a children’s birthday party. Throw in an open bar, and the rest writes itself.”

“A pastry chef (who was a close friend) made a surprise groom’s

cake for Darryn. “We used every opportunity to crack a joke, and the groom’s cake was no exception. It was an exact replica of the cake Homer Simpson gave to Marge at their shotgun wedding. It was shaped like a whale and read ‘To a whale of a wife’.”

venue for the ceremony and cocktail style party. To create a party atmosphere, they opted out of assigned seating and provided several areas for guests to mingle and dine on a couple thousand hot and cold hors d’oeuvres. The menu included Finnish items like smoked salmon, potato salad with dill and Karelia Pies. The biggest crowd pleaser was the late night grilled cheese station that guests are still talking about! Ashlee and her friends designed floral arrangements using fifty wrapped bunches of daisies, roses, greens, lilies, and many other blooms (anything that fit the colour palette). “I wanted the flowers to look wild and natural with every table having a different arrangement, so the randomness of the available stock worked in my favour.”

A Street Illusionist Magician provided the fabulous main entertainment for the evening. “He simply blew everyone away. He roamed around the room and did up close magic tricks for the guests and we would highly recommend him for getting a party started.” Darryn and Ashlee wanted photos that captured urban Toronto. They knew that their friend, Kristy, of Ibis Photography, was the only choice for their wedding photos. Second shooter, Ruth Kivilahti, helped cover the day as well. “We took photos in front of Massey Hall and in the middle of Yonge and Dundas square when the traffic stopped for the scatter crossing. This was sort of our ‘love letter’ to Toronto... We put Kristy through her paces on that very long day, beginning at 11:00 am and hitting five different locations en route to the venue. It was exhausting, but so worth it, and

she was with us in stride, clicking away.” The couple gave guests custom designed coffee mugs filled with sweets because they knew they’d be able to use them later. Each mug (which was accompanied by a cartoon dinosaur) read: “Remember how much fun you had at Ashlee and Darryn’s wedding? Good Times.” Darryn and Ashlee’s wedding was the perfect way to bring all of their loved ones together in one space at the same time. “We wanted to have people there to celebrate our marriage with us, we wanted to create an opportunity for all of the wonderful people in our lives to put faces to names and get to know each other. And it was a pretty righteous party. “ ■ GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 29

HOW MUCH DOES IT TYPICALLY COST? The price range is anywhere between $250 and $800. HOW LONG DOES A TYPICAL SESSION TAKE? A session can take anywhere from one to three hours. ARE BOUDOIR SHOOTS TYPICALLY DONE WHAT IS BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY? It essentially means a style of photographs taken in a woman’s private bedroom. It can be a tasteful approach to glamour, burlesque, pinup, illusional nude or other inspiring themes. It isn’t about nakedness...it’s about sexy hair and makeup, fashionable and sexy outfits, special occasion lingerie and flirty attitude. Boudoir sessions are popular because they are very empowering, fun and fashionable. It is about the women’s special beauty and sensuality and who she is on a more personal level. The coolest thing about boudoir photography is that it means something different for everyone. ADVICE FOR BRIDES THAT ARE NERVOUS ABOUT A BOUDOIR SHOOT? Every client starts out nervous, but nerves subside during the session. It is the photographer’s job to make her feel at ease and comfortable

BEFORE OR AFTER THE WEDDING? Sessions are usually done about a month before the wedding. It can also be closer to the wedding, but there should be some guaranteed time to have the photobook ready.

WHAT TO WEAR

She doesn’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on new lingerie, she can feel free to get creative... Not every look has to be a push-up bra and panties. • Lingerie • Hosiery • Bridal veil • Jewellery • His shirt, tie, boots, team jersey etc. • A costume (if the theme holds a special meaning) • Swimsuit • High heels • Scarves, hats, gloves (for a seasonal shoot) • Shirts, skirts, tops. TIP: Leave the corset for last...they leave marks all over the stomach!

GETTING PREPPED

• Any photo session can be exhausting therefore you will need to eat but, avoid foods that cause bloating. • Get rest the night before and drink water, it adds life to your complexion. • Come sober, the photos will not be successful if you are not coherent and not able to take direction properly. • Do not wear tight clothing before your session: These can leave marks and lines on your skin that take time to go away. • Getting nails, hair, and makeup done is recommended. • Do not try new facial peel or hair removal techniques just before your session or anything else that can affect the look of your skin. • Wear clear deodorant. • Look over some pictures online or in magazines and practice a few poses and facial expressions that you might want to try. • Moisturize the day of your shoot. • A more dramatic make-up look tends to work best. False eyelashes enhance the look for the pictures and to get professional make-up done is advisable. • Hair styling that goes a little beyond the everyday look.

DOs AND DON’Ts DON’T starve yourself for days before the shoot...you will need the energy! DO communicate what you like and don’t be too shy to try what you may have in mind. Often the silliest poses turn out to be the best. DON’T hold your breath...you want to look natural. DO believe in yourself, love yourself and do not think that you have to be size 2 to consider a boudoir shoot.

Trust that photographers are not there to judge you. And, when it comes to choosing a location, the client’s home helps with the comfort level and reduces the transportation, clothing and prop hassle. Believe that shortly after the session starts, you will start feeling like a star and that is when the real shoot begins. WHAT SHOULD A BRIDE EXPECT DURING THE SESSION? The photographer will professionally and respectfully coach her through poses in a private environment. A great photographer will demonstrate the poses... what to do with hands, where to look, facial expression etc... women love to be shown instead of being told, it makes them more comfortable. Women should also expect for the shoot to be at her comfort level and, that her photos will remain private. GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 35

bride, but there's a lot that goes into the perfect head to toe wedding day look. Make-up artist, Sonia Ryan, and her assistant, Alicia Cowan, came to the set equipped with a fabulous portable make-up studio and tool kit, filled with custom colour palettes. From skin tone to hair and eye colour (among other factors), Sonia and Alicia created personalized looks for each bride using her custom products and colours, like a flawless airbrush foundation, spicy pink cheeks and berry coloured lips.

Suke Mestanovski, owner of Side Street Salon in London, gave our brides the royal treatment with hair styles to complement their style. For example, Anna, a huge Marilyn Monroe fan, adored her soft, Marilyn-inspired curls. Bride Becky preferred a totally one-of-a-kind and non-traditional avant-garde look that showed off her unique sense of style. Suke used each bride's hair type, comfort zone and face shape (among a list of factors) to create a style that not only looked fabulous, but truly showed off each bride's individual sense of style.

FIND THE ULTIMATE gowns for your ladies GOWN SHOPPING DOs Jirina's Bridal: Order a minimum of 6 months prior to the wedding. PHOTO: Courtesy of Elegant Affair Bridal (www.elegantaffairbridals.com)

Elegant Affair Bridal: Look like yourself on your wedding day - albeit the very best version of yourself. Deciding what that specifically means before you start shopping is worthwhile. Knowing which look feels best for your wedding day is important, because you'll be better able to make a choice once you've narrowed your scope (especially since there are many beautiful dresses out there, and most likely, many of them will look good on you). White Romance: Bring one or two people with you to try on gowns. Too many voices means too many opinions and brides usually leave confused.

key-hole backs & ROYAL LOVE

BRIDESMAIDS IN STYLE

Elegant Affair Bridal: It's all about key hole backs. Last season's sexy back returned for Spring 2013 with a more demure, romantic attention to delicate embroideries, lace frames, and peekaboo keyholes.

Jirina's Bridal: Peach, plum/eggplant, and fuchsia are the hottest colour options for 2013. Elegant Affair Bridal: Illusion necklines are in. You want your bridesmaids to look beautiful and feel amazing and this style dress just may be the perfect balance for your girls. For brides who want to ditch the traditional strapless dress, an illusion neckline gives a strapless dress a twist. An illusion neckline is a sheer piece of fabric that lays over a gown giving the appearance of a high neckline but with a hint of skin showing through. Beautiful!

Duchess Kate's royal wedding gown proved its influence after almost every collection this season showed some variation on lace - albeit unlike anything your grandmother would have worn. This graphic, floral fabric felt fresher than ever, re-worked into sexy silhouettes with a dash of tradition.

LOVING THE LACE

White Romance in Listowel: The big trend for next year in bridal is lace, lace, and more lace!! High neck/sleeves/cut out backs... Also heavily beaded bodice's are huge. Bling bling!!

White Romance: Bridesmaids are following in a small way with lace detail and lots of wide straps or one shoulder straps. Shoes are very personal. We have seen everything from stilettos to cowboy boots, baseball cleats, and puma sneakers!! It's a fun way to add your personality to the big day!!

PALE PASTELS

Once Upon A Time Weddings: The emergence of colour onto the wedding gown scene continues to be eye grabbing at markets. We believe we'll see more and more brides gravitating toward pale pastel wedding gowns.

Once Upon A Time Weddings: Of course the colour purple continues to be a very popular and elegant choice for weddings. But it's nice to see some brides stepping out of the box and choosing more vibrant, fun colours. A bride should choose a colour scheme

Once Upon A Time Weddings: We hear all the time from Moms that they don't want to look old or like a traditional Mother of the Bride/Groom. Moms are now choosing a gown that reflects their personality and flatters their body. Some moms still prefer to have a jacket or a more traditional gown, but many others are opting for something that says "chic" to them. Also we're seeing more moms gravitate towards a cocktail or mid calf length rather than floor length.

CHIC MOMS

Jirina's Bridal: Mothers of the bride and groom are choosing shorter dresses, often in lace. The most popular colours are definitely plum, ivory and grey.

46 • The Wedding Ring Magazine { ONTARIO } | www.theweddingring.ca

Jirina's Bridal: Don't order from the Internet... You are buying blind. I've had a bride come in who ordered online and did not receive the dress. Another bride loved the photos online but when she received the gown she absolutely hated it! Both ended up then having to buy off the rack. Elegant Affair Bridal: Don't buy your dress before the details are set. Timing is everything! Location, time of day and the formality of the event will all have an impact on the type of dress you should wear. If you shop for a dress before these details are set, you will not have enough information to make a good choice. that reflects her personality and what she envisions for her day. Another trend for maids is doing a black dress and making an accent colour - be it pink, red, blue, green or multi colours really pop with accessories and flowers. But make sure that you are choosing this colour scheme because you like it - not just because you think your girls will wear the gowns again. Groomsmen don't really get to choose - they typically follow suit with whatever the girls are wearing!

FLOWER GIRLS

Once Upon A Time Weddings: Flower girls typically match what the bride is wearing, although it doesn't have to exact. The formality of the bride's gown should dictate the formality of the flower girl's dress.

ACCESSORIES

Once Upon A Time Weddings: Accessories for 2013 are becoming more bold, more fun. Brides are paying more attention to those little details and pulling their big day all together with gorgeous accessories - from veils, jewellery and flowers to hairpins and belts. Speaking of belts, those are hot for 2013 as well - whether brides want a really defined waistline or, whether it's just a fun way to add some colour or sparkle to the gown. â–

SHOPPING FOR TUXES IN 2013

We are also seeing a tuxedo that is inspired by a suit. Traditionally, tuxedos had a lot of satin detailing worn with a vest and tie to match the bride and the bridesmaid’s dresses. Some of the new collections have taken the simplicity of the suit and created a tuxedo.

TO Rent or Buy? The Groom's Budget How much each groom and groomsmen spends depends if they are buying or renting. A lot of people think buying is less expensive because they get to keep it after. When you rent, you are literally getting everything you will need, from your jacket and pants to your cufflinks and suspenders. To buy that could cost upwards of $1000.00. Renting is always a packaged price. These prices range from $129.99 to $169.99.

We are seeing side vents and simple lapels, as well as wool vests to match the jacket. The pop of colour is in the tie and pocket puff allowing the look to be classic and contemporary and accentuating the accessories.

Going cheaper isn’t always better. Be aware of how old the tuxedo/suit is that you are renting. Something that is modern and comfortable for the guys is probably going to be a little more expensive because you are paying for the quality. It is important to think about how many layers they have on with their shirt, vest and jacket which they are wearing all day and night. The best tip is to visit local bridal shows which are always full of amazing deals that will save the couple and the groomsmen money.

Another great trend is the steel grey and silver grey tuxedos. It is a change from tradition but still embodies the formal impression of a tuxedo. Grey tuxedos are so great because they are still very formal but are different than the common black tuxedo. The

Finding the perfect fit Don't choose a tuxedo without trying it on. At most formal wear stores you have the option of trying on the tuxedo before booking. This does not cost extra and it actually shows you how it will fit and look so

TRENDS IN MEN'S FORMAL WEAR The latest trend in men’s formal wear has to be the slim fit tuxedo/suit. Men are saying goodbye to big shoulder pads and wide pants and hello to a fitted, European style tuxedo. Jackets are becoming more lightweight with less shoulder pads and a fitted waist. Lapels have become narrower only with minor satin detailing. Tuxedo pants are also becoming slimmer with a thin satin stripe. Nothing is more dapper than a fitted tuxedo.

silver grey is perfect for a Spring/Summer wedding; whereas the steel grey is a statement for Autumn/ Winter weddings. Paired with the matching wool vest and grey shoes it is a head turner for any event.

An expert tip from Collins Formal Wear (♥) (www.collinsformalwear.com)

that on the big day there aren’t any surprises when you pick up your tuxedo. If you have never worn a tuxedo before do not hesitate to ask questions. The fit of the tuxedo is one of the biggest misconceptions. It is not supposed to look like you have ‘football player shoulders’ or ‘MC Hammer pants,’ it should be form fitting and sharp. Take the time to shop around and see what works for you. Family-owned and operated, Collins Formal Wear first opened their doors in 1965. To date, Collins has expanded to multiple locations, including Kitchener, Hamilton and London, providing wedding parties with high end, exclusive formal wear.

FAVOURITE DÉCOR ELEMENT: “We loved all the rich, vibrant colours at the ceremony and reception. It made for a very celebratory, happy atmosphere.” - Kanna & Stephanie

■ rich with culture ■

Stephanie and Kanna wanted their wedding to reflect their families’ distinct heritage. Stephanie explains, “We were inspired by the different cultural heritages of our respective families. We wanted to incorporate elements which reflected those aspects while maintaining a unique and simple ceremony.” “We incorporated several traditional elements from Dutch Catholic and Indian Hindu ceremonies and combined them in a secular fashion. Bright, vibrant colours were used to convey a happy, upbeat theme. This was furthered by the bridesmaids dressing in bright, different coloured Saris and matching those colours with the groomsmen’s ties and pocket squares.”

Bright bouquets of tulips were used to reflect Stephanie’s Dutch heritage. The men wore boutonnieres that incorporated roses and freesias, also a reflection of Stephanie’s Dutch heritage. Traditional Hindu floral wreaths were used in the ceremony to symbolize Kanna’s Indian heritage. Guests were treated to a midnight buffet that included pizza and nachos as well as Indian favourites like samosas, pakoras and bhaaji and a selection of traditional Indian sweets. Heather MacEachern of HRM Photography (♥) told staff at The Ring, “Stephanie and Kanna’s wedding took place on a beautiful spring day at Bellamere Winery. The girls’ bright saris added a great punch to the pictures. The evening ended with a gorgeous sunset and the party was hoppin’ with a separate kid’s room (complete with face painting and bouncy castle!) and our hilarious photo booth!”

One of our favourite parts after the wedding was going through all the photos and seeing what creative, silly and fun poses our guests came up with.” COLOURS: Yellow, grey and ivory Photographer: Two Tone Studios (♥) (www.2tonestudios.ca)

Ashley and Jeff wanted a relaxed, warm and welcoming setting for a wedding day that would reflect their theme of family heritage. Ashley explains, “We really wanted to stay true to some old fashion traditions. Getting married in a church, classic music, cutting of the cake, something old, new, borrowed and blue. My dress was vintage inspired and my bouquet was reminiscent of the flowers that grew in my grandmother’s garden. We included our parents, cousins, and even nieces and nephews in our ceremony and wedding party, showcasing our linage from parents to great-grandchildren.” For example, the “guest book” was a commissioned painting of a family tree. They asked each guest to stamp their thumb print to a branch on the tree and sign their name. “That family tree now hangs in our den in a frame and makes us smile every day seeing all 150 of our favourite people in one painting.” Vintage lamps for the reception tables were purchased for less than $5 each from thrift stores and antique

shops. Ashley used twenty-one different types of yellow and grey fabrics from local fabric shops to cover each lamp and compliment her colour palette. They created a signature drink for cocktail hour called the “June Bug.” It was yellow, inspired by the month they were married and Ashley added yellow and grey striped straws with homemade flags to showcase their wedding date as well as the couple’s silhouettes. Ashley and Jeff filled pots with honey from a ranch in Kincardine, a sentimental DIY favour for their guests. “It was an area close to our hearts as Jeff ’s grandparents are from there and it’s an area we both grew up in. We covered each honey pot with a homemade label and fabric that matched our décor.” ■ SAVE ME! To keep the fires of creativity burning, tear out this page & save it in your ideas binder.

Jenessa and Eric wanted their Spring wedding to portray a “rustic DIY” look with a twist on family traditions. Jenessa explains, “My mother and I did all of our decorations! We used a lot of burlap, flowers, and many decorations that we created ourselves with birch trees and craft materials.” “We wanted our theme and decorations to be very personal to us as a celebration of our love! We had lots of rustic decorations with burlap and nature inspired accents. We also had personalizations such as a Dutch pattern called “delft blue” and many DIY decorations and additives. For example, my sister made our beautiful rustic cake, we used chocolate letters (a Dutch tradition) as our favours. The table numbers were homemade with pictures of ourselves at each age corresponding with the table number!” - Jenessa & Eric

Savour every moment and be selfish on your day, you only get it once!” - Lauren Teachers, Lauren and Andrew wanted to go for a clean, crisp, contemporary theme with fresh new (Marine blue and Chartreuse green) colours... “We wanted every aspect of our wedding to be punched full of bright energy.” Lauren, with the help of her Mom and sisters, took care of a lot of décor. Table numbers were made from dollar store picture frames and paper that matched the invitations. The family wrapped ribbon around white napkins. They also bought vases and handwrapped them with strips of bling. Lauren remembers buying hurricane vases, green candleholders, and blue tealight holders at the Superstore... “I think I hit up six different Superstores to buy over 120 pieces!”

Lauren and Andrew created a candy bar by shopping for all things blue, green and sweet from bulk stores. “Talk about patience... but it was worth it.” It was only fitting that the teachers would use chalkboards (made by Andrew’s cousin) for their seating chart. Andrew’s Aunt wrote the entire chart on the boards. “Thank God for family!” Guelph-based photographer, Amber Richmond, told The Ring, “Lauren and Andrew’s wedding was incredibly laid back. ADVICE FROM ONE BRIDE TO ANOTHER: “You hear this again and again but don’t sweat the small stuff. Things will go wrong, but the day will be beautiful. Surround yourself with people you love and who love you and they will be able to support you and help when the inevitable issues happen. Also, invest in an excellent photographer to capture all of the work you put in on that special day. Anne Edgar Photography was unbelievable and I still look at my pictures daily. Oh, and if you’re doing things DIY and you’re a perfectionist, leave WAY more time than you think you need!” - Jessica

■ CLASSIC ELEGANCE & DIY ■

Jessica and Josh wanted their day to be simple and elegant. “Everything we created was designed to be simple. This is a common colour scheme, but by having red and black damask table cloths and having the men wear red shirts, the colour really popped without going overboard.” Their wedding entailed plenty of DIY projects, thanks to the help of family and friends - from designing their invitations and seating chart to creating their own damask backdrop for their head table. The backdrop was one of Jessica`s favourite elements. “My father built this from scratch... It was the most beautiful backdrop that was really built with love.” Jessica’s bridesmaids helped make every floral centerpiece and floral decoration the night before the wedding. “We’re SAVE ME! so grateful for the amazing friends and family that helped every step of the way...” Further tying in their red, white and black palette, Jessica carries a bouquet of deep red roses and peonies wrapped in white ribbon. Her bridesmaids each carried three large, white calla lilies. When we asked photographer, Anne Edgar, what she remembers most about Jessica and Josh’s day. She told The Ring, “The colours were rich and vibrant, the roses & damasks were stunning, the dress was beautifully cut and designer delicious. But that is not what I think of when I remember this beautiful spring wedding. For me, the most striking thing about this celebration was the deep emotional content. Yes – every wedding is emotional. But this one will always remind me of joy, and of how families can come together to celebrate love and life. Jessica and Josh laughed, loved and celebrated with just a little bit more intensity, more clarity, and with eyes wide open.” ■

The long adventure-filled jouRney home

Wedding Date: May 2nd, 2012 Ceremony: Astwood Cover and Park, Bermuda Reception: A beachfront Bistro in Bermuda Photographer: Studio J Photography (www.studiojphotography.ca) COLOUR PALETTE: Bruce & Erin's daughter

Erin Tjam and Bruce Arai realized early on in their relationship that they have something special. They each came to eachother with three kids, and say “We complement and accept each other. We both have our strengths and weaknesses, and they offset each other, so we're perfect together.”

making six distinct parts. "We each brought three kids to the marriage, and the six of them integrate like the wedding band. Four parts of the band have diamonds, and two are plain. So our joke is four of the kids will be well off, and two will need their siblings support, and probably live in our basement!"

It was years after they met, on their first family cruise, that the two got engaged. The proposal was anything but traditional. Erin explains, "We always said that we would wait for the kids to 'propose' the idea before we would get married. Lucky for us, they chose to do so on a cruise to The Bahamas... The next day we docked in Nassau and we all went to look for rings!" Erin and Bruce laugh as they remember that it took six hours to find Erin's ring, and two minutes to find Bruce's. "The kids ran off after two hours of ring shopping, because they couldn't take it anymore. I guess the proposal was more of a family affair, rather than a romantic bended knee request."

At first, they thought they would have their wedding back at home in Kitchener. But since their journey to the aisle was a long one (filled with twists, turns and a lot of family!), it made perfect sense to turn their wedding into a journey as well. In addition, they had such a great experience on their family cruise they decided another cruise would be ideal for their wedding.

Erin's ring was made up of three small crossing bands

Erin and Bruce found a wedding planner in Bermuda

They eventually decided on Bermuda, where the wedding ceremony would take place. "The wedding is as important to us, as the trip is to the kids. And getting married with kids is more about them than the bride and groom."

who helped make the planning process stress-free. When they were given options for cakes, venues, flowers, and other wedding details, they simply made their choices from the comfort of their home. "We tried to have a no-fuss wedding. We weren't picky about flowers, or even dresses." Erin found two dresses that she liked, and so Bruce simply suggested, "get them both." So there was one for the ceremony and another for the reception and photos. "The toughest part was getting twenty-six people on the cruise ship, and getting some last minute passports. After that, everything was easy!" And to take full advantage of their wedding adventure, they opted to enjoy a few stops on the way. Aside from Bermuda, the entire family also went to New York and toured through Chinatown, Central Park, Grand Central Stations and Times Square. The entire wedding became a true family affair. Their daughter chose the colour scheme, based on whatever colour she chose for her dress. "The boys were begging

her not to pick a pink dress. She ended up making the best choice - a teal colour that blended perfectly with the ocean." On May 2nd, 2012 at 1pm, Erin and Bruce were married at Astwood Park in Bermuda, on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It was not only a private, intimate location, but the location provided a true take-your-breath-away backdrop for their vows, "The day was perfectly clear and sunny, and the deep blue of the ocean made an idyllic backdrop for our vows." The guys wore tuxes with silver vests which worked perfectly with the teal colour scheme. With a photo shoot on the beach, flats were a must for the women after the ceremony. Erin and Bruce say that one of the most touching moments was watching their children walk their grandparents down the "aisle" on the cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. All of the wedding music were

pieces that the kids had played in the past - in orchestras, quartets or music festivals. Their children and Erin's father also sang for the couple during the ceremony. "They had us in tears!" Since the wedding was in Bermuda, the couple wanted their reception to showcase their stunning location. They found the perfect beachfront bistro, just ten feet from the gorgeous sandy beach. "We all kicked off our shoes and strolled along the beach with the wind in our hair." With exotic food and plenty of picky eaters in the group, there was a running joke about who would dare to eat what. That's why there was often money on the table - bets on whether said guest dared eat the food on their plate. Jay Parson, of Studio J Photography, was their DW photographer. "Jay captured every moment of our journey and our ceremony beautifully."

The day after the wedding, the group rented a boat and were off for a day on a private island. Erin's Trash The Dress session included trashing the dress AND having the boys try it on! All photographed of course, so we have something to show when our sons get married!" After the wedding, Bruce and Erin started planning an 'Endless Soiree' in-town reception for friends and relatives who couldn't join them on their journey. "Instead of renting a hotel for out of town guests, we will use Boardwalk Homes Executive Guest Houses & Suites (www.boardwalkhomes.ca) so everyone can stay together in this private house." Bruce and Erin agree that their destination wedding was more about their family than about themselves. And they were happy with that. Not only were they able to celebrate in a gorgeous location, but they were able to share it with their kids and close relatives. It was emotional. "We were crying... We saw our kids all grown up, walking down the aisle with our parents." ■GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 61

■ TROPICAL DESTINATION DéCOR ■

Photographer: Captured Soul Photography (♥) (www.capturedsoulphotography.com) We love designing Destination Wedding palettes! DWs offer one of the most inspiring and beautiful inspirations for a design palette that a bride and groom could hope for. Here’s a few ideas to get your creativity fires burning for your DW or beach themed wedding...

HOT, HOT, HOT: Saying “I Do” outside in 100+ degree weather and intense sunlight means everyone is hot. Choose attire that is lighter and let’s the air in through the fabric. Short bridal gowns can be fun. Soft, flowing materials always look incredible. Offer umbrellas or carasols for guests to take refuge beneath. Instead of handing out the typical program, make your ceremony stationery do double duty as a fan. Keep guests hydrated with plenty of water in between sugary, fruity umbrella drinks! Watch out for guests who aren’t staying hydrated. This is especially needed for younger guests and those who’ve never travelled to a tropical destination before.

“Nothing compares to a Destination Wedding. With a large gathering of friends and loved ones in one fabulous location for an entire week, there are countless photo shoot options and memories and to be had, all set against an incredible, exotic backdrop. Ninety percent of my weddings are DWs, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” - Michelle Kauntz, Destination Weddings Photography Specialist, Captured Soul Photography 62 • The Wedding Ring Magazine { ONTARIO } | www.theweddingring.ca

LOCAL DéCOR INSPIRATION: Tap into natural, local beauty wherever possible. Embellish décor with shells, starfish, local culture (moraccas are stylish and fun!), local florals. Sand can add style to centrepiece vases. LEISURE: DWs are a vacation as well as a wedding, so treat guests to a thank you bag filled with vacay goodies such as asian fans, flip flops, sun screen, customized beer coolers, customized thermos cups (a big fav - they’ll use these aaaaall week!) and as many seaside events as you can. MEMORIES: There aren’t many times in your life where you’ll have this many memories at one time in one place. Hiring a photographer who specialized in Destination Weddings will help ensure that you capture these memories - and the beauty of your seaside wedding day - in the best way possible. SAVE ME! To keep the fires of creativity burning, tear out this page & save it in your ideas binder.

Florists like Drimmie Florist (drimmieflorist.com) and Something Borrowed Wedding & Party Rentals (somethingborrowedrentals.com) offer artificial flowers that brides can bring in their suitcase. Lindsay Hinde of Something Borrowed explains, "Generally the flowers tend to be expensive if you get them done locally. A great way to save some money and be more involved in the process is if you go with artificial flowers and take them with you. There are some great varieties of silks and real touch flowers and the extra bonus is that you will have them even after your big day is done!"

Beachy, Bright Invites

Elena Sebekos of Paperboat Creations (www. paperboatcreations.com ) says that destination brides are choosing bright, vibrant colours to reflect their wedding destination. Says Elena, "They are also using elements and materials other than the traditional sea shells and starfish in the design and it’s the presentation that makes it more unique."

Dressing the Destination Groom

Christine Lightfoot of Collins Formal Wear (www. collinsformalwear.com) says that a casual suit is a great option for destination grooms, "A sand or tan suit is perfect for a beach wedding. There are a couple of different options when choosing how casual you want to go. Wear no jacket but a shirt, vest, tie and pant. The vest is what allows it to still be formal but relaxed. Another option is to just wear the shirt and pant. The best way to decide what look is for you is to see how formal or casual the bride and bridesmaid’s will be. You want to match them and be dressed a little more formal than your guests."

Dressing the Destination Bride

Erin Bouchard from Once Upon a Time Weddings (www.onceuponatimeweddings.ca) admits that it can be tricky finding the ideal gown for a destination wedding but offers some advice for DW brides,

"Sometimes brides are torn between choosing a gown that they've always dreamed of and opting for something more 'destination' friendly. Go with your gut on this one. However, you should think about how the gown you choose will travel. Most gowns can be packaged up in a way to ensure they don't arrive a wrinkled mess. Also, call ahead and check with your resort about whether or not they have a steamer that can be used to touch up your gown when you arrive."

Video Make-Up Tutorials

Angie Keller, owner of Jacha Minerals (www. jachaminerals.com), came up with a great idea for destination brides who don't want to break the bank by flying out a makeup artist for their DW wedding. Angie explains, "I have a lot of destination brides booking make-up videos with me. I sit them down and go over step-by-step instructions on how to apply their desired look. On the day of the wedding, the bride and the bridesmaids watch the video and recreate the look. I recommend that destination brides either go light on the foundation, or stick to a water resistant formula. The last thing you want is to see the foundation sweating off your skin while you’re exchanging vows."

DIY Carry On's

Lauren Koster of Twelfth Night Events (www. twelfthnightevents.com) loves that DW brides are packing their favourite décor items to create a truly personalized DW. She explains, "Items such as paper lanterns, buntings, pom-poms, and balloons can dress up any resort to offer brides a personal touch! Just don't forget your fishing line to hang everything and don't rely on the hotel to provide that for you!" Remember: Shipping is expensive and many destination hotels won't allow you to send anything in advance, so ask your guests to offer some extra room in their suitcases!

Destined For Fabulous Shoes

Planning Need-to-Knows

Although a DW often means less stressful planning, there are still several important things to consider before you go, says Wedding Planner, Jackie Nerlien, of The Prepared Bride (www.preparedbrideweddings. com). Here are just a few need-to-knows from Jackie...

1. Always purchase travel insurance when going afar for your wedding. You can never predict the future! 2. Consider the time of year and weather. If you are planning to have a wedding in the Caribbean, hurricane season is from June 1st through November 30th, so you may want to avoid traveling during that time. 3. Make sure your passport is valid and at least six months from expiry. You will not be allowed on an airplane with a passport that is within six months of expiry. 4. If you are going somewhere tropical, bring LOTS of sunscreen and apply it frequently. The last thing you want is a red face in your wedding photos! 5. A lot of times, a translator is necessary for translating the ceremony and marriage documents. This must be considered and taken care of before arriving on location.

Simona Gagliostro, owner of Urban Bride Boutique (myurbanbride.com) sees many DW brides come through her doors looking for the perfect DW shoe. Simona offers some advice for choosing what to wear, "If your ceremony is on the beach, right on the sand, then heels will sink right into the sand. Barefoot jewellery will look quite interesting, flip flops, wedge heels or barefoot sandals are also a great choice. They all come with bling on them to make them look very fancy. If your wedding is at a location other than the actual beach, stick with a wider square heel when possible." We love these sandals from Urban Bride Boutique (above) as well as this fun seashell foot jewellery from WeddingFavours.ca (left). ■ GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 63

SCOUTING JAMAICA

Whether you’re planning an oceanside wedding with the surf swirling around your feet, or a cliff-top ceremony with a backdrop of gorgeous sea views, Jamaica truly has something for every couple, on any budget. We recently had the pleasure of attending a Destination Wedding and Honeymoon Fam Trip, hosted by the Jamaican Tourist Board (www.visitjamaica.com). With our fabulous tour guide, Jordanne Hunter, we scoured some of the country’s top destinations for the best places to say ‘I do’. Along the way we found out why they say “Once you go, you know.” And what we know is that we love, love, love Jamaica! CHOOSING YOUR AREA OF THE ISAND There are several stunning areas in Jamaica for couples to choose from, each home to luxe resorts. Here’s a breakdown of the three most popular areas for destination weddings and honeymoons... NEGRIL is known as the Capital of Casual. With spectacular views, white sand beaches, black cliffs and azure waters that soothe the soul, it’s an easy, one hour drive from the Montego Bay International Airport. Negril is home to a variety of different hotels, resorts and activities, to suit every traveler. MONTEGO BAY (MoBay) is known for being both hip and historic. Located about half way between Ocho Rios and Negril, MoBay is a hub of activity in Jamaica. Whether you’re a shopaholic, love the night life or want to relax in the turquoise waters, MoBay has something for everyone. OCHO RIOS Christopher Columbus described Ocho Rios as “the fairest land mine eyes have ever seen.” Home to waterfalls, river flows, grassy hills

and sandy coves, Ocho Rios is also Jamaica’s playground full of attractions such as the Dunn’s River Falls and Mystic Mountain (home of the famous Jamaica Bobsled ride). While we were touring Jamaica, we had the pleasure of attending Montego Bay’s first ever Bridal Expo, where we met fabulous wedding professionals who cater to destination wedding and honeymoon couples. RESEARCHING RESORTS By bus, plane and walking tours (particularly at the Expo), we learned as much as we could about the resorts you have to choose from in Jamaica. Here's a few of our favourite spots to say ‘I do’... The legendary Rose Hall Great House is the most famous 'great house' in Jamaica. The subject of at least a dozen Gothic novels, it was immortalized in the book, White Witch of Rose Hall - written about “Infamous Annie,” who once inhabited the house and was said to have dabbled in witchcraft. Today, Rose Hall hosts gorgeous weddings all over the property. Couples can

getting MARRIED in Jamaica: • Visitors can be married 24 hours after arriving in Jamaica as long as the application for a marriage license is made in advance. • Couples arriving in Jamaica by cruise ship who are spending one day in Jamaica can still get married as long as the documentation and licensing is taken care of well in advance of arriving on the island • No blood test is required • Cost of a marriage license is 4000 Jamaican dollars (approximately $45 CAD) • Notarized copies of the following documents are required along with your marriage license: proof of citizenship (long form birth certificate which includes your father’s name), proof of divorce (if applicable), Parent’s written consent (if under 18), certified copy of death certificate for widow or widower and photo ID

choose from several options, including a ceremony overlooking the grounds of the old plantation home, a cocktail reception in the Great House, or a tented outdoor reception.

Coyaba River Gardens (www.coyabagardens. com) is just five minutes from central Ocho Rios, overlooking the Bay. You can choose from several DW locations, including two large lawns and a classic pavilion for your reception area, as well as a separate ceremony area. Its lush, natural beauty is ideal for couples who want to take advantage of Jamaica’s natural beauty. It’s also a fantastic location for wedding photos.

MYSTIC MOUNTAIN (www.rainforestadventure.com)

Mystic Mountain is a very cool, must-do for any visitor who's ever dreamed of being a Jamaican bobsled driver. We loved racing down the mountain! It’s also a unique, gorgeous spot to get married. With Rainforest Adventures Mystic Mountain’s “I Do at 700 Feet” wedding package, couples soar high into the forest canopy as they begin their life together in pure Jamaican hospitality. Fresh mountain air, verdant slopes and stunning ocean views create a mystical environment that lends well to the romance of a wedding day. “I Do at 700 Feet” wedding packages let couples choose their ceremony venue – either flying high on the SkyExplorer through the treetops, on the lawn atop Mystic Mountain, or in the Mystic Pavilion restaurant. Dolphin Cove (www.dolphincovejamaica.com) is the largest natural dolphin lagoon in the world. It's a great option for a day trip for you and your wedding guests. Between swimming with dolphins, sting rays and sharks, feeding beautiful tropical birds and petting the resident snake, Dolphin Cove could definitely turn into a full day trip. Couples

Dinner is ideal for parties of ten to twentyfive guests. Reservations can be made in advance for one of the specialty restaurants (for all inclusive guests) at a cost of US$10 per person for the entire group. This option gives you HOLIDAY INN SUNSPREE RESORT your own wait staff in a semi-private area of the restaurant. This package includes white glove service, a bottle of champagne for toasting and decorations such as tablecloth, napkins and chair covers; choice of black, gold or silver tiebacks and votive candles. The resort's wedding planner can also arrange additional details through their preferred vendors such as island floral designers, musicians, photographers, and wedding cake creators. The Iberostar Rose Hall Beach Hotel (www.iberostar.com) is all about the all inclusive, five-star experience. The resort is great for both families and couples, with tons of activities for each. Guests can unwind at the swim-up bar, play volleyball on the beach and enjoy live entertainment in the theatre and music bar. Its proximity to the centre of Rose Hall allows guests to get to know traditional Jamaican life, with easy access to bars, restaurants, and countless day trip options. The resort sits on a stunning beach, making it an extremely popular place to say ‘I do’ or renew your vows (there were roughly two weddings per day during our stay). The hotel has a wedding planning team to assist couples in making their big day perfect. They take care of all the details such as the wedding cake, bride’s bouquet, videos and music. ■

OUR favourite things

COYABA RIVER GARDENS

Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort (www.caribbeanhi.com) offers several ceremony locations, including beach locations, garden weddings and ceremonies on the pier. They offer two packages to choose from... The Restaurant Menu of the Day is for weddings with more than twenty-five guests. The Port Side Menu (buffet or plated) is offered at US$25 per person for guests staying at the resort (off-site guests are US$40 per person). Dinner is held in one of their private locations, subject to availability and room rental surcharge. This package includes white glove service, a bottle of champagne for toasting and decorations such as white tablecloth, napkins and chair covers; choice of black, gold or silver tiebacks and votive candles. The Semi-Private A-la-Carte

• Marguerite’s, a restaurant on a popular strip in Montego Bay called 'The Hip Strip' was romantic and had superb service. They served the best grilled lobster EVER! We also love the apple and coconut crisp for dessert. • The Swedish Massage at the Holiday Inn was heaven. The resort offers beachside couples massages - perfect for the bride and groom. • Jamaican beaches were to die for. Gorgeous white sand and turquoise water. It doesn’t get better than that! • Meeting so many fabulous wedding professionals at the Montego Bay Bridal Show. From gown rentals to couples resorts to local florists, Jamaica has so much to offer when it comes to destination weddings!

TV reporter speaks to the Ring about news, nuptials & picking a public fight WITH parkinson's A Q&A with newlywed Toronto TV reporter (CityNews), Saphia Khambalia 2011 was a crazy year for Saphia Khambalia. When she wasn't reporting on the news or balancing some semblence of an off-camera personal life with her fiancé, Ivan Vujevic, Saphia somehow managed to plan and execute the event of her life - an extravagant wedding that blended two cultures and stretched over two venues. It also included two ceremonies, two receptions, three dresses and entertained 300 guests.

for the reception, it had a detachable court train that came off after midnight to reveal a cocktail-number for dancing! So much fun!

In 2012, Saphia became a spokesperson for the Parkinson Society Central & Northern Ontario

Q. It meant a lot to you that your grandfather could be at your wedding. Is that what gave you the push to speak out for people living with Parkinson's? A. It's a debilitating disease, changing life not only for the 100,000 Canadians affected, but also for the 400,000 family members and caregivers whose lives are directly touched by this disease. The numbers are staggering and growing.

Q. Truth or dare: Was there any hope of staying on budget? A. Truth. Ha ha. No! We probably spent about twice what we had planned. But both weddings were really about us and our families. They were exactly the way we wanted them to be. It was all perfect and represented us to a “t”. And we did a lot of DIY projects to really make a unique mark on our day, and also to make up for splurging. Ivan learned Photoshop on the fly, so that he could design all of our own stationery - which was beautiful! We also created our own logo wall which we used as a backdrop for our photo booth

Q. Why two weddings?

PHOTO: Luca Salvatore Photography

A. Along with a special church ceremony, the traditional Croatian Catholic wedding was a bash. It was very 'guest-centric'. It was all about throwing the biggest party we could. We had a four-piece Croatian folk band, rented a limobus for the wedding party, handed out flip flops for dancing, lit sparklers at

PHOTO, ABOVE: One of Saphia and Ivan's favourite parts of their wedding day was when they basically shut down the grocery store where they first met. There in the middle of the produce aisle, they had a photo shoot with Renaissance Studios. "Shoppers stopped and would cheer every time we kissed or struck a pose!"

night in the gardens at our venue (The Art Gallery of Hamilton), and had memorable photo shoots with Renaissance Studios Photography (www. renaissancestudios.ca). The Indian Muslim Ceremony allowed us to embrace and learn about this culture that my parents grew up with. It was all about food, symbolic customs, elders, and basically, it was about family at it's core. I also got to wear the white-wedding sari my grandmother wore during her wedding. It made my grandfather tear-up seeing it. He said he felt like he was reliving his wedding day from 52 years ago. Since my Grandmother has Alzheimers, and my grandfather has Parkinson's, that was a special moment for all of us. In fact, even after 52 years, and even with one living in an apartment and the other in a nursing home, not a day goes by that they don't think of each other. Ivan and I are inspired by that. We're a team, best friends. We know we can get over any mountain together.

Q. The sari sounds so special. And if our count is right, there’s still two other dresses you need to tell us about...

But, really I want people to know that this disease is not a death sentence. However, it will take and take from you if you let it. And while everyone's progression is different, my grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson's four short years ago, and already, he depends on a motorized wheel chair and 24/7 nursing home care. But yes, my grandfather DID get to attend my wedding, that meant the world to me. He still truly lives life and that’s the ticket. Even though this is a disease without a cure, it's also one with a lot of hope.

Q. What can people with Parkinson's hope for today? A. First off: there is a cure on the horizon. Researchers are constantly discovering new treatments and improving quality of life for many. In watching my inspiring grandfather, I've learned that even though you may lose skills and abilities, you can often compensate for them or re-learn a new way of doing things. Some with a tremor learn to write with their non-dominant hand after losing the ability in their other hand. Others walk with the assistance of a walker, or share experiences with others and utilize some of the amazing support groups that the Parkinson Society offers. I believe it's mind over matter. And what I mean by that, is that by keeping a positive mind [and with a lot of hard work and determination], you will be surprised at how people can still live an active life with Parkinson's.

A. Besides my grandmothers sari, I had two other looks: each fitting for the different wedding events: the european church ceremony and the modern Art Gallery reception. And come on, when else would I have been able to wear two dream gowns? First for the Ceremony an extravagant dress made by Pronovias with wisps of chiffon and a two metre long train! I then put on a chic, modern Jasmine gown

Q. What does your grandfather think about you speaking out for Parkinson's, and for him? A. He loves it. I think that for the first time, he feels like someone is really fighting for him in a very public way. I'm lucky to have a public forum to put my message out there and I think that gives him personally, as well as others, an extra push in a really good direction. It's also amazing the feedback I've received from viewers. Several have said, "Thank you for making us feel like we're not alone." Until that day when a cure is here, I'm picking a fight with Parkinson's and speaking out for anyone who feels like they're being robbed by this disease. I believe there IS life after Parkinson's. â– Saphia can be seen reporting for CityNews on Citytv and CityNews Channel. TRENDING SHOES

An expert tip from Simona Gagliostro of Urban Bride Boutique (♥) in Cambridge (myurbanbride.com)

There are countless ways to blow your wedding budget. But ladies, don’t let your wedding shoes be the victim of a busted budget! Now, I’m not saying that everyone needs to use their wedding as an excuse to finally buy that phenomenal pair of Christian Louboutins. All I’m saying is that you’ve invested too much time and energy into your wedding look to underwhelm in the shoe department. After all, your shoes and jewellery are the ONLY things you can re-wear post wedding date... I wear my chocolate brown wedding shoes often and it always reminds me of my wedding day! Gone are the days of the classic white pump. With so many styles and colours to choose from, here’s what’s hot for 2013... Glitter: What woman doesn’t love to shine? Brides are choosing shoes full of thousands of tiny sparkles that catch the light for an extra bit of bling on their wedding day. Metallics: These are a great option for brides that want a shoe that offers sparkle but won’t take away from the dress. Metallic satin and pewter are both popular options. Black metallic is also doable, especially with a black ribbon sash around the waist.

Victorian/Modern Vintage: The magic word is “romance” for 2013. Bridal shoes are beautiful with details like small buttons, roses and lace.

a mint coloured shoe is a great way to incorporate your palette into your wedding day look. Which leads us to another hot colour...

Modern: The perfect shoe to pair with a modern theme would be a stiletto or sandal. Peep toes are also a great option.

Blue: Last but not least, blue shoes are hot for 2013 - in particular, a very strong, vivid blue like “Monaco Blue.” We saw a lot of sky blue in the spring Oscar de la Renta collection of gowns. The beauty of this trend is that you can easily follow the tradition of something old, new, borrowed & blue!

Make-up is going to go from soft and natural, to elegant and glamorous. I definitely think gold's' and dark lip colours will make an appearance in bridal make-up. Brides will step out of their comfort zones a little more this year and play up their make-up on their wedding day. Hair accessories for both the bride and the bridal party are going to hot - whether it's head bands, barrettes or jewels. Switching up the make-up half way through the day is a growing trend. Brides are choosing a more natural look for the ceremony and are then choosing a more dramatic, bold look to make a grand entrance at the reception. For a subtle change, choose a nice soft lip for the ceremony and

Make sure that you stick to a timeless look that will enhance your features. A liquid liner with a very soft wing at the corners of the eyes is a great twist on last year's winged out liners. Create a smoky eye in a colour that will bring out your eye colour and do not bring it past the natural shape of your eye. A big factor in choosing your wedding day make-up is choosing a look that flatters your natural features. ■ Make-up and Hair: Angie Keller and Sherri Horton, of Jacha Minerals (♥) (www.jachaminerals.com) Venue: The Walper Hotel (♥) (www.walper.com) Gowns: La Créme (♥) (www.lacremedecor.com)

a bolder one for the reception. Must-have products? Eyelash extensions! Brides can have gorgeous lashes from the rehearsal through to the wedding and long after they have returned from their honeymoon. Make sure that they are applied by a professional.

Twelfth Night: Variations of lace alternatives!! Brides are gaga over lace these days, but getting caught up on finding the perfect lace can be a real pain! We love that there are so many alternatives for the lace look that will save brides time and money! Our favourite? Paper doilies and paper lace! These affordable pieces of paper are already created to look like lace and can be dyed or painted to match any colour scheme! Wedding Dream: Chair covers! They can change a room drastically - at a price that most brides can afford. They fit nicely into a simple wedding theme, as well as detailed, sophisticated one.

Q. What is your all-time favourite location? Devine Wedding Design: The Marque Room at the Festival Theatre (www.stratfordfestival.ca) and the tent on the grounds at the Stone Willow Inn (www. stonewillow.com).

Something Borrowed: There are so many great venues in the St.Thomas area but one of my favorites' is Quai du Vin. It's between St.Thomas and Port Stanley, not too far from hotel accommodations for out of town guests. You are able to do both your ceremony and reception there. And, if you have a nice sunny day and the amazing background of the vineyard, what could be better?! Event Firm: Langdon Hall (langdonhall.ca). We love weddings there because of the country Victorian look and amazing food. We also love THEMUSEUM (♥) in downtown Kitchener (www.themuseum.ca). It is definitely the place to be for the modern bride who's looking for a dramatic venue.

Q. What trends are you seeing for 2013? SOMETHING BORROWED: We are seeing a lot of vintage, country, rustic themed weddings! EVENT FIRM: Cocktail style receptions with lounges and fun food: couples are definitely focusing on the party side of things. Music can make or break your party, and people are really starting to realize that. Prepared Bride: Garden themes (think garden party, Spring) are popular. Wild flowers that look like they have just been picked used in bouquets and centrepieces. The colour green - in all different shades - is being used in décor and apparel. Twelfth Night: Brides are really interested in the romantic outdoor country style weddings - lace covered mason jars, linen with lace lined table runners and chair sashes, window seating charts and old vintage doors for backdrops. Burlap linen and lace will be unavoidable in 2013 as it's becoming far more accessible to brides from florists, craft shops, and décor rental companies than it was in 2012. There is an ever growing trend of filling out your wedding with "stuff", which we can see carrying over to 2013

as well. Brides want to fill the room with as many DIY touches as possible: Handmade centrepeices, vintage furniture (suitcases, windows, doors, barrels, bicycles), hanging paper lanterns, and lots and lots of signage! Wedding Dream: Those who aren't doing vintage themes with lace, chivari chairs and antique décor, are still loving modern contemporary décor that uses "bling", plenty of blacks and whites, and fluffy table cloths.

Q. What is your absolute must-have item for the perfect wedding day? Devine Wedding Design: A unique and customized backdrop that suits the specific bride. Brides often ask us for a gathered sheer backdrop. Something Borrowed: A cohesive flow throughout all of their décor. Sometimes it is hard

Prepared Bride: On personal property such as the couple's back yard or the family farm. It adds such a personal touch to the whole wedding that just can't be achieved at other locations. You also have the freedom to do what you want in terms of set up and décor. Twelfth Night: My favourite venue for an outdoor wedding is Cedar Run Horse Park in Collingwood (www.cedarrun.ca). It's a beautiful, newly built horse park, with the perfect outdoor feel! Surrounded by apple orchards and lush greenery, brides truly feel surrounded by nature at this venue! The best part? There is a barn on property, designed for wedding receptions, with a beautifully landscaped patio! With horses on site, it's a pretty easy decision on what the transportation will be and photographers are spoilt for choice on great shots and backdrops! I also love this venue because of its Blue Mountain location! It's perfect for guests as it's a short trip from Blue Mountain village, which offers a variety of accommodations, restaurants, and activities to occupy everyone before and after the wedding! ■ GET LOCAL. Q&A with EVENT PLANNERS & DECORators FROM THE RING

When it comes to cake design, Owner, Joanne, says her favourite is the classic, elegant wedding cake.

An expert tip from Joanne Vincent of JoRa Wedding Cakes (♥)(www.joraweddingcakes.com) and Jirina Kepka at Jirina’s Bakery (♥) (www.jirinasbakery.com). Today's brides have so much to choose from when it comes to wedding cake designs and flavours. At JoRa Wedding Cakes (photos: below left & below middle), one of brides' favourite flavours is the vanilla cake filled with lemon and raspberry.

To choose your cake, Joanne invites couples to bring in photos taken from the internet or magazines, and she'll then sit down to talk about how to make a similar look that works for them, without a budgetbreaking price tag. "Nothing makes me happier than when a bride and groom fall in love with their

Jirina, owner of Jirina’s Bakery agrees, noting that her favourite moment is when she sees the bride’s reaction as she takes in her finished wedding cake for the first time. At Jirina’s Bakery (photos: top left & bottom right), many brides are looking for soft colours for their wedding cake, with white and ivory being the top choices. Brides also like to dress up their wedding cake with lots of jewellery and embellishments. For 2013, Jirina has noticed that brides are incorporating lace around the cake and the cake table. Cakes are also smaller for 2013, with brides choosing three tiers instead of six, or offering smaller cakes on each table at the reception, which can double as a beautiful centrepiece. Love it! ■

"Classic designs are still also a favourite with many of our brides!" she told The Ring. While different shapes, colours, designs, and hand-made sugar accessories (like sweeps of 'fabric', delicate four-petal flowers and large intricate roses) are added to customize the look of each cake, it's the classic style and sweet sugar embroidery (swirls and patterns piped on by hand) that brides always love as a starting point.

wedding cake at first sight."

An Expert Tip from Karen Drimmie, Owner of Drimmie Florist in Elora (www.drimmieflorist.com) FOR THE BRIDE: Right now, brides are steering away from the perfect ball-shaped bouquet and creating a more natural, loose bouquet. This look is best created in a hand tied bouquet, which allows the flowers to drape naturally, and adds more movement within a bouquet.

FOR THE WEDDING PARTY: Men like the idea of more textured and woodsey boutonnières instead of the traditional rose. Textural greens, such as seeded Eucalyptus, Hypericum Berries, and Grey Brazillia from South Africa and Australia are popular options for 2013.

Brides are also choosing to add larger flowers to their bouquets. Using a few larger flowers mixed into a bouquet creates a dramatic effect, such as garden roses, which when fully open look similar to a Peony, Dahlia’s and Amaryllis.

Since bridesmaids are starting to wear different dresses, bouquets should also be more individualized. They can be completely different than the brides, so that she can make her own statement. Brides are leaning towards dramatic colours for their bridesmaids so that the flowers are very present in pictures.

or artificial trees; but now brides are asking for lots of flowers to fill the hall which makes a romantic garden look. Everything from unique bathroom arrangements to extravagant head table arrangements are made to make the hall look beautiful.

FOR THE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE/GROOM: Hand held very small nosegay, originally called Tuzy Musy is a smart look for Mothers. A better alternative for the standard pin-on corsage is a magnetic one. This way the mothers dress is not ruined with pin holes. Spray roses are a great flower for a corsage. They are dainty but sturdy, holding up well in a corsage.

FAVOURITE FINDS: Grey Brazillia from Australia, White Geraniums and BC Hydrangea. These three flowers in a bouquet make a very romantic and vintage look.

PHOTO: TheWeddingRing.ca

Jewellery like lockets and brooches are a popular addition to the bouquet for a sentimental touch.

FOR THE CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Flowers, Flowers, and more flowers. For a while brides were staying away from flowers for their ceremony and doing simpler displays such as candles

FROM SCRIBES’ NOOK BURLAP AND LACE

EMBELLISHING CLASSIC ELEGANCE "I’m not sure if it ever went away but there’s a return to classic elegance with wonderful damask detailing and ornamentation all around."

(www.scribesnookinc.ca) told The Ring that both burlap and lace are popular choices for wedding invitations right now. "Couples are also choosing to personalize their wedding theme with custom invitations, programs, save the date cards and other wedding stationary." DESIGN WITH FIRST IMPRESSIONS IN MIND "I recommend that couples think about invitations from past weddings they’ve attended and discuss what they like or don’t like about them to narrow down what they want. Just remember the invite is the first thing that people will receive regarding this important event. If you are looking for the perfect invite, provide the setting for the wedding by using paper and text, tell your guests when, where, how to get there and any other helpful information that they may need."

MOST MEMORABLE BOUQUET: A bride collected vintage scarves that were incorporated into the bridesmaid’s bouquet. This made a very interesting and unique look, and it was also nice to have a more personal touch in each girl’s bouquet. ■

It’s lovely and perfect. I just love using plain black and white when I design. It allows the design to speak volumes."

The Garden look has become the most popular style for hall flowers. Very natural vase arrangements are used to create the look of a garden party.

PHOTO: www.paperboatcreations.com

FROM PAPERBOAT CREATIONS CHIC AND SOPHISTICATED Elena Sebekos, owner and designer at Paperboat Creations (www.paperboatcreations.com) says that the hottest trends for 2013 involves all things that are chic, chic, chic and fun. "I always want my clients to look their best on paper, so the design must always have a sophisticated spin to it. No matter what the theme, keep it elevated and stylish. The most popular themes I’m seeing are what I call ‘the Coco Chanel look’. Think black-and-white sophisticated elegance.

"I really like to use embellishments...it dresses up even the simplest invitation, whether it’s ribbons, or jewels or beads. It completes the look. I really like using metallic papers because they are so pretty and they stand the test of time." STATIONERY DOs ✓ Try not to do your invitations last minute, especially if you hire a designer. They need time to create what it is you’re looking for and go through all the stages leading up to completion. ✓ Give your designer all the details and design elements you would want to see in your invitations and the designer will create something that is uniquely yours. ✓ Spend a little more on that extra insert card, instead of cramming all the info into your invitation. ■ GET LOCAL. CATERING To YOUR menu options CATERING

FAVOURITE TRENDS: Personalizing your reception with personalized table numbers, favours, and family china such as cups and saucers. Incorporating foods that follow family traditions is also a favourite option.

DO... choose experience! For a day as important as a wedding, anything less than a caterer with wedding experience is a gamble. A wedding isn't just about serving food. It's the whole experience. The emotions and expectations for a wedding are very different than a dinner party. ~ Custom Cuisine

DOs & DON'Ts

CHOOSING THE PERFECT WEDDING MEAL: Couples are choosing familiar foods but adding an interesting element to make them more unique. Yes, you want your meal to be unique, but not so much so that people don't know what they're eating and later find themselves running off for fast food to fill up. Chicken and beef still rule for mains, but consider adding an interesting garnish. It's amazing how a simple homemade compote or microgreen can jazz up a plate.

DON'T... choose poutine! Poutine stations are popular. They sound like a good idea until you put Vera Wang, gravy and stringy cheese together. Not a good combination! ~ Custom Cuisine DO... Ask if they cook the food fresh on site or if they use food warmers or steamers to transport pre-cooked food. People remember the food and the service. You only have one chance to do it right. ~ North Moore DON'T... expect a high end meal when you're on a tight budget. Costs are at an all time high for caterers with regards to food and labour. ~ North Moore

FROM CUSTOM CUISINE

THE SHOWER: People are having fun with the Afternoon Tea (although most people think of it as high tea, its actually Afternoon Tea). This means serving dainty finger foods such as coloured tea sandwiches, scones, and petit fours with lace and, of course, manners! THE REHEARSAL DINNER: Pub style rehearsal dinners are very popular right now. THE COCKTAIL HOUR: Couples are starting to take the majority of their wedding party photos before the ceremony so they can spend more time with their guests during the cocktail hour. THE RECEPTION DINNER: Food stations are in.

THE REHEARSAL DINNER: People are having fun, themed parties. THE COCKTAIL HOUR: High quality food that is simple yet, fun! For example: beer battered fish 'n chips and smoked salmon gaufrettes! THE RECEPTION DINNER: Couples are requesting more fish. Choosing a four course menu is also becoming more popular that the old standard three course dinner. THE LATE NIGHT SNACK: People are tired of pizza, sandwiches and mashed potato bars. Instead, they're choosing something a little bit different such as a taco or perogi bar! FAVOURITE TREND: A mad hatter rehearsal party! ■

When Reality Wedding couple, Catalina and Giacomo (featured on page 56 & 57), told us that Cambridge Mill (www.cambridgemill.ca) allowed guests to choose their entrée right from their seats at the couple's July 14th wedding reception, we were in love! And Cambridge Mill isn't the only venue allowing guests to order, their entrée on the spot. Whistle Bear Golf Club (www.whistlebear.ca), Ancaster Mill (www.ancastermill.ca), and Spencer's at the Waterfront (www.spencers.ca) - all owned and operated by the Ciancone family - also offer the restaurant-style ordering option for weddings.

PHOTO: www.hrmphotography.com

ON-SITE MENU CHOICES FOR GUESTS

We talked to owner Leanne Ciancone to find out more. She explained, "We print customized menus and guests choose their entree as if they were in the restaurant. It ensures that guests know we are preparing their entree 'to order' and that it's fresh. It also allows us to make a connection with each guest. We can find out if there are any dietary restrictions or allergies that may have not been communicated. We can see that guests enjoy choosing their meal that night, since they may prefer another choice rather than one made months in advance. No organization is required of our couple beforehand as well." ■ GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 79
