DESIGNER WEDDINGS RUN IN THE FAMILY Photography by Kristopher James Photography (♥) (www.kristopherjamesphotography.com) | Story by TheWeddingRing.ca BRIDE & GROOM: Murrae Watters & Eric Wilson Wedding Date: August 11th, 2012 Ceremony: Esquimalt Gorge Park (www.esquimalt.ca/parksRecreation/) RECEPTION: Murrae’s Aunt Vickie’s home Hair and Makeup: Salon J Studios (www.salonj.ca) DJ: Danceland DJs (www.dancelanddj.com) Flowers: Eurosa Farms (www.eurosa.bc.ca) Catering: Pier One Restaurant (250-656-1224) Wedding Dress: Luz Bridal (www.luzbridal.com) Eric and Murrae have known each other so long that they remember watching Sailor Moon at Murrae’s house when they were children. Fast forward to twelfth grade and Eric is trying to get Murrae’s attention. “I kept asking her out,” says Eric. And
Murrae kept saying no. “But I kept pursuing until she asked me to join an acting group she was in.” Eric admits that he wasn’t really into acting but figured he had a better chance with Murrae if he did. He was right. Murrae loved that Eric is persistent and patient. “I kept saying no, but he was kind and understanding and just kept waiting for me.” The two did begin dating and things became serious. Eric remembers, “It always felt like it was meant to be.” Eric wanted his proposal to be amazing. He gathered some friends together and organized a special beach proposal. Eric took Murrae out for the day in Victoria. They adventured through the city. Near the end of the day, Eric blindfolded Murrae and took her to ‘their spot’ on the beach where, years earlier, he had asked her to be his girlfriend. As they arrived, he picked her up, put her over his shoulder and carried

her over the rocks to their destination. When Eric took off her blindfold, Murrae looked up to see an abundance of candles lighting up the darkness. Eric said, “Five years ago I asked you to be my girlfriend here, and now I am asking you to be my wife.” Murrae said “Yes” and their friends jumped out of the bushes (where they had been hiding) and the group congratulated the nearlyweds. “It was all so romantic, beautiful and sentimental,” says Murrae. And so the planning started. Right from the start they had a hard time choosing a date. Family was spread across Canada and, as students, they had a limited budget to work with. Finally, the beautiful Esquimalt Gorge Park was chosen and an outdoor, country theme naturally came together. Murrae admits she found dress shopping difficult. Finally, she found a dress that was too large and didn’t have the straps she was looking for. But her
reality weddings
FROM ONE BRIDE TO ANOTHER: “Remember that the day is about your dream and your vision. Take advice but don’t put too much stock in it – do what you would actually want to do.” Aunt Dianne, a seamstress, took on the alterations and reworked it until it was exactly how Murrae had envisioned. Her Aunt Dianne also sewed five yellow bridesmaids’ dresses, and, finally, the flower girl’s dress which graced Murrae’s six month old niece, Abigail. “My aunt has made most of the bridal gowns in our family... You could say it was a tradition!” Getting the guys suited up turned out to be problematic. Eric finally decided to go to Le Chateau and found himself a vest and pants in light grey with a thin black tie and white shirt. His groomsmen wore the same, adding black suspenders. “Our invitations turned into an adventure as well,” says Murrae. “We wanted to make them using a fun photo... We went and got mall photos done and used that along with a ‘boy meets girl at school’ theme. It was a lot of effort but we loved them in the end. Murrae chose Salon J Studios as the place to be on the morning of her wedding. Drama ensued as she admits that she hated the extensions she had asked for as soon as she saw them completed. “I had all five of my bridesmaids telling me they looked beautiful but I
didn’t feel good. My hairdresser was so great! She took most of them out and started again. It was my bridal meltdown!”
ideas. If we were feeling discouraged about something we would call him and he would put us back on a wedding high.”
Eurosa Farms created lovely multi-coloured and slightly wild looking flowers in oranges, yellows and blues.
At the reception, guests were asked to write their wishes and messages on Jenga blocks. “We love that whenever we play Jenga now, we have all these fun things to read!” Wedding photos of parents and grandparents lined a table for everyone to see. The centrepieces were various yellow thrift store finds. They sat on white tablecloths with light blue checkered fabric while wild flowers from a friend’s yard completed the look.
Murrae’s wedding day look was finished with heirloom earrings from her grandmother, who had passed away, and a silver necklace with a pearl. Her bridesmaids also wore matching pearls. Her something blue was the blue buttons sewn into her garter. When Eric saw Murrae walking through the Japanese Gardens and up the aisle on her father’s arm, he admits, “I was breathless... I was thinking about our life about to start together.” After the ceremony, Murrae and Eric jumped on their Vespa, put on their shades and arrived at the reception with tin cans trailing behind them! One of the couple’s favourite times of the day was spent with Kristopher James Photography at an old barn to pose for their photos. “He took us to see this barn a few days before, but the blackberries had grown right over it, so he gave up on the idea. Eric and my brother took ladders and clippers and cleaned the whole area up. It turned out to be where our favorite photos were taken and Kris was so stoked when he heard!” says Murrae. Eric says, “Kristopher really got to know us and he was so genuinely excited to shoot us. It made us feel really important! And he came up with really great
Catering was a snap. Murrae worked at Pier One Restaurant, so Greek cuisine was served at their standing reception. Murrae’s mother made the beautiful wedding cake with four tiers, covered with tiny white daisies and two pretty birds on top. Guests ate, mingled and danced with the bride and groom well into the night, with nothing but the stars and decorative twinkle lights above them. “I had a great time on my wedding day,” says Eric, “from the moment I got up to the final wind-down. It was a little mind-numbing, frightening and wonderful. I think if you can get through planning a wedding, you can get through anything!” Murrae admits that planning their wedding turned out to be quite dramatic. “But my wedding was everything I wanted it to be. The day was beautiful and every little detail, even the ones we didn’t plan, all fit together and it was perfect.” ■ GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 5

We love this idea and the note attached - so thoughtful to your guests in heels! “When your feet begin to hurt and you don’t think you can move, put these flippyfloppies on your feet and get back into the groove!”
Gone are the days of lining up in formation in front of a rose bush or church for a photo. Today, cutting edge photographers are looking for photo locations and backdrops that offer creative, raw, new (and old), or unique elements to give their captures some additional style. This has made posing amidst modern and urban architecture very hot right now. Think back alleys and office buildings. The photo above is the perfect example. Szymon Szymczakowski shoots through windows to capture the contrast of the traditional beauty of the bride and groom against the modern architecture and strong lines of the building.

Rustic Florals { ABOVE }
BORROWED INSPIRATION { ABOVE }
BUDGET SHOCK { ABOVE }
As a designer, I have a great appreciation for the element of surprise and the unexpected within a bouquet. These special aspects are what take a typical bouquet and elevate it to spectacular. To achieve the rustic look it’s a matter of thinking past the flowers.
We always get our brides to spend some time going through websites and magazines and grab images that they love--even if they don't know why they love it! We can usually identify a common thread and build each bride's specific look from the information those photos provide! For example, when describing the perfect shade of peach vs. coral, a picture really is worth a thousand words (or more!) So don't feel like you are insulting your floral designer by bringing in lots of pictures - it's actually a great help! ■
One thing we notice is that brides are often not aware of the value of flowers and are shocked by the cost of a bouquet. The bouquets you often see online and in photo shoots use very expensive stems such as callas, orchids, garden roses and stephanotis or flowers that will not last all day. Remember that a bouquet takes a lot of flowers and use the more expensive blooms sparingly. Don't get discouraged and remember that your florist can help you achieve your dream look at a reasonable cost. ■
DESIGN ADVICE by Tamara Penna of Purely Flower Boutique (www.purelyflower.com)
What other interesting pieces can accompany the flowers? Perhaps seed pods, eucalyptus pods or scabiosa pods might be used to achieve this. I often think of the French term, jolie laide, describing something beautiful within apparent ugliness. In the midst of flowers, these rough looking items can make beautiful statements.
FLORAL PLANNING ADVICE by Sarah of Freshview Events (www.freshviewevents.com)
In pursuit of rustic appeal, it is important to recognize variation within texture as being an important design element. Try to look beyond the flowers and consider the foliage. Leaves can vary in shape and size and colours can include fresh green, silver and deep burgundy with black. Encourage your floral designer to play with an assortment of colour tones and textures in the foliage. ■
FAB FLORAL DESIGN TRENDS An expert trend by Tina of Platinum Floral Designs (♥) (www.platinumfloraldesigns.com)
For those of you who LOVE the vintage and romantic feel, but want to put a twist on it, think about using masculine touches such as with dark leather containers, brass elements or cigar boxes. These can add just the right amount of extra depth to your design scheme. We're also seeing an introduction of butterflies, birds and branches being intertwined into the floral design - adding lots of whimsy. The most exciting design scheme being re-introduced is in the use of greenery to create what I like to call an ‘English Cottage Garden’. This design style uses less form and more movement - which I love. And finally, 60's bright! Looking to make a visual impact? Throwing together bright yellows, paired with 60's turquoise, fire engine reds and blues OR purple's and oranges will ensure there is a POP of colour. Trends aside; stay true to your instincts. I believe it's not the latest trend that will make you happy when looking back upon your wedding some twenty years from now, but using the bloom that makes your heart palpitate or remembering that sweet fragrance when you close your eyes. Do what your heart says! Just remember, if a particular bloom is a must-have, plan your wedding around that bloom when it is seasonally available, otherwise it simply might not be around! ■

HANDLES, TEXTURES & MEMORIES { LEFT } DESIGN ADVICE BY Colleen from FoxgloveS Flowers (♥) (www.foxglovesflowers.com)
Have you ever considered what the handle of your bouquet will look like? Not likely. In fact, most brides don’t give it a second thought. But the handle offers a fabulous opportunity to add some extra style and personality to the already wonderful flowers you will carry on your big day. Customize your bouquet handle to make it uniquely yours. Add textures such as burlap or lace, fabrics, layered ribbons, vintage jewellery, bling of any sort or anything else that suits you and adds a new dimension to your bouquet. A lot of brides use their bouquet to tuck in important family mementos that honour relatives who cannot be with them. Look around you for inspiration… You can find it almost anywhere! ■

GOING GREEN @ YOUR WEDDING 3 EASY-TO-DO GREEN ideas PHOTOS, RIGHT: WWW.ANDREWPAQUET.COM
♥ A great way to reduce your wedding footprint is to use organic flowers for your big day. Conventional flowers are grown using resource-gobbling irrigation and often-hazardous chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Fortunately, Vancouver Island boasts many eco-minded florists specializing in organic or not-quite-organic, but at least environmentally responsible and sustainable growing practices. ♥ Ask your florist if they carry eco-friendly VeriFlora, Florverde and FLP certified flowers. If you can’t find organics, don’t worry! In-season, locally-grown flowers carry a much smaller carbon footprint than conventional imports. Here on Vancouver Island, local blooms can be found between May and October from such places as Kenmar Flower Farm (www.kenmarflowerfarm.com) and Fresh View Events (www.freshviewevents.com) as well as many others! ♥ Gather mason jars and tag them with each guest’s name. A fun idea that saves a lot of waste! ■

and Ocean 98.5 then voted for their favorite love story. Vanessa told us that she and Rob met in the summer of 2008 and they bonded over her dog! “My dog instantly fell in love with Rob, and abandoned me, which was not normal for her. I listened to my dog, who obviously knew there was something special about him!” Vanessa continues, “We had met during a particularly difficult time in our lives and with the chaos surrounding us, our friendship developed into a mutual need to help each other through some tough times. Rob moved me into his house and changed my life forever. With his encouragement and support, I went across Canada into a drug treatment facility. When I had successfully completed the program, he invited me back into his life and we started our amazing journey from there...” Vanessa feels that Rob “saved me and gave me a reason to live and love. Now, thanks to him, I spend my days working at my dream job.” With such sacrifices, obviously finances became limited, so the dream of a wedding had been put off for Rob and Vanessa. Now, thanks to entering the ‘Love Story’ contest and having lots of radio listeners voting for their story, they will be able to have a wedding in the brand new Little White Chapel at the Bay Centre! Maybe we will see you there! ■

Sara openly admits she really threw herself at him but thought he didn’t notice. It turns out that she was wrong. but due to circumstances, it wasn’t until a year later that Kevin would even see her again. Once he found out where she was working he started to make up excuses to go see her – always with fresh cologne! Sara says that his reasons were pretty transparent and it wasn’t long before they started dating! 20 • The Wedding Ring Magazine { VANCOUVER ISLAND } | vancouverisland.theweddingring.ca
Kevin and Sara were scheduled to go on an annual trip with friends to Tofino. Secretly, Kevin had their friends bring the ring he had bought in Vancouver. As they were all leaving, he told Sara they had to stop to check out Cox Bay Beach Resort (www. coxbaybeachresort.com) for a future trip. Kevin knew he wanted to video the moment so when he took Sara down to the beach, he had her wait as he set up the shot. Sara was getting a bit frustrated until finally, Kevin appeared in front of her and got down on one knee. “I told him to stop joking around!” says Sara. She says she can’t even remember what he said next, but that in the end, she gave him a resounding, ‘Yes!’ Sara told The Ring, “Kevin is my everything. He is pretty spectacular! Not a day goes by when I don’t laugh with him. My friends and family love him and he is so supportive. I feel so lucky!” And Kevin is just as enamoured. “I love everything about Sara. Her conviction, her compassion and how she cares so deeply about people. She has inspired me from the day we met.”
“Kevin is my everything... I feel so lucky!” Kevin and Sara were looking for an unique venue. They found this in the Prestige Oceanfront Resort (♥), and particularly liked that the venue has so much space for guests. They also liked the Event Coordinator, Krista. In fact, they booked the Prestige Oceanfront Resort before it was even open! Sara had been a bridesmaid thirteen times (!!) already and felt like she had a strong grasp on wedding

planning. “I knew that I wanted things to be simple, elegant, and yet, classy.” She decided on navy blue and olive green as the base colours of their design palette. She also wanted to have bright, eye-catching florals. After booking their venue, Sara focused on finding her dress. “I am five feet tall and everything I tried on looked ridiculous!” So she opted to have Lily Kennedy design her a dress and veil. “She did it for a great price and it looked perfect... I especially loved the 150 handsewn buttons down the back.” The bridesmaids found their dresses at Victoria Bridal Boutique (♥). “The girls there were so great.. they felt like family by the end of the experience!” Kevin and his groomsmen wore grey Vera Wang suits from Moores. Kevin added a vest and a tie in fuchsia pink and navy blue while the groomsmen wore plain navy blue. The ladies got ready at a girlfriend’s house where Robin of Parlor Hair Salon did everyone’s hair. Sara’s friend, Lindsey (a trained makeup artist) did everyone’s makeup. After spending considerably less time on prep than their ladies, the guys spent the morning hitting golf balls. When the bouquets, created by Tina, of Platinum Floral Designs (♥), arrived, they were just what Sara had been hoping for. “I love Tina. Love her, love her, love her! She is just the coolest girl. When I told her what I pictured, she got it... I trusted her to just do what she liked. She even sent us a ‘storyboard’ of the flowers she would be using.” Sara and Kevin decided to marry in the courtyard veranda. The ceremony included asking all the guests to accept responsibility in helping the marriage
succeed, with everyone answering “We do!” Sara was escorted down the aisle by both her father and her stepfather. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktails in the sunshine set to the sounds of a popular island violin duo, Harbour Strings. “A lot [of guests] commented on the amazing violinists... They even played Lady Gaga!” Kevin and Sara spent the cocktail hour with Curtis of Curtis Pelletier Photography (♥). Sara saw some of

I nearly gave Kevin a heart attack... He thought I had guessed he was going to propose soon!” Kevin was so amazed by how integral Curtis turned out to be in their wedding day. “We had fun with him. We were also surprised to see how much of the day we hadn’t seen, but his photos recorded all of it for us.” As their private photo shoot ended, they walked into the incredibly beautiful ballroom where the décor from Designer Weddings and Special Occasions Rentals perfectly complemented Tina’s floral
creations. Sara says “I knew early on that décor is not my thing, so Linda did a wonderful job for me! It was really lovely.” Linens draped onto the floor and vintage vases were displayed. Printed thank you notes with a donation to Cops for Cancer/Tour de Rock were given to guests in lieu of traditional wedding favours. Guests were then also able to make a donation if they wanted Kevin and Sara to kiss (great idea!). A wonderful buffet had everyone raving. “The Prestige was really great about the meal... We were so happy when everyone commented on how wonderful the food was. And there was so much to choose from!” says Sara. The dancing portion of the evening was jumpstarted by Spin the Black Disc, who kept the party hopping! When it came to dessert, Sara wanted a cake that everyone could eat. Since many guests had health issues, she was thrilled to find Origin Bakery, who were able to make a gluten free carrot cake. “We also got cupcakes from The Cupcake Girls. We took our five year old ring bearer to the cupcake tasting so he could be involved. That was so fun!” Sara and Kevin admit they wouldn’t change a thing about their wedding. Sara says, “I loved it all!” For Kevin, the moment he will always remember most is the one when he saw Sara for the first time that day. He was also happy to have the support of their friends and family, “The people that surrounded us that day were something very profound for me.” ■ GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 21

A WICKANINNISH OCEANSIDE ELOPEMENT Photography by Christopher Pouget Photography (♥) (www.christopherpouget.com) | Story by TheWeddingRing.ca BRIDE & GROOM: Jason Workhoven & Jodie Powell Wedding Date: September 1st, 2012 Ceremony & RECEPTION: The Wickaninnish Inn (♥) in Tofino, BC (www.wickinn.com) HAIR & MAKE-UP: Salty Dolls Hair Salon (www.saltydollshairsalon.com) BOUQUET: Crab Apple Florals (www.crabapplefloral.com) Wedding Dress: David’s Bridal in Edmonton, AB (www.davidsbridal.ca) Jason knew a good thing when he saw it. In July 2008, Jodie started work in Fort McMurray and, since Jason worked in orientation there, he used the spelling of Jodie’s name being the same as his sister’s as his opening line. Their friendship began and continued for several years before they began to date seriously. As soon as he knew that this was real love, Jason
decided he would propose to Jodie on a beach (he knew she had been missing the beaches in her home province of Newfoundland). Friends at work had mentioned that the Wickaninnish Inn was an amazing beach resort. In August 2011, Jason booked them in for a romantic weekend at the Inn and packed the ring. While taking a walk in the early afternoon, Jason noted a particular spot on the beach that Jodie liked. Later that evening, he took Jodie back to that spot, got down on one knee and proposed. Jodie says, “I could tell he had forgot what he was going to say but it didn’t matter. I said ‘yes’!!” Jodie is very sure about what she loves about Jason. “He makes me laugh! We have been best friends since the day we met. He is just so easy to talk with.” Jason says he loves Jodie’s personality and how they get along together. “We have the same opinions on

almost everything and we have a good time together. She makes me happy, and at the end of the day, that’s what is really important in life.” Jason and Jodie loved their Wickaninnish Inn experience so much they decided to return there for the wedding. “At first we had thought about Punta Cana, but it was so much easier and more sentimental to return to Tofino where we were engaged a year earlier” says Jodie. And the difficulty of trying to get everyone together at the same time made eloping seem like a wonderful idea. Once that decision was made, it was smooth sailing. Laura, the Wedding Coordinator at Wickaninnish Inn, took care of their wedding planning. Jodie was thrilled with the service they received. “Whatever I asked for, they had it. It was a hundred percent ‘yes’ to all my requests... They did whatever I wanted. Laura was just phenomenal – she had me send my dress
ahead of time and when I arrived in my room, there it was, steamed and covered so Jason couldn’t see it. They just constantly went above and beyond our expectations.”
The ceremony was held on the beach. It was very quick, at the request of the bride and groom. “The sun was in the perfect spot and we loved that it was short and sweet!”
Still, Jodie and Jason had to plan a few things on their own. Jason wanted to have the beach look with no suit. They decided to continue with the Punta Cana destination wedding look for their Canadian wedding. Jodie liked the idea of a destination dress, but found the beachy gowns she tried on were just too informal. She surprised herself when she realized that she was definitely stuck on the idea of a big white wedding dress. So they just threw their hands up and decided each could dress exactly how they wished!”
After the ceremony, they enjoyed a fun, extended photoshoot with Christopher Pouget Photography. Jodie explains, “When we first called Christopher, he was about to step onto a helicopter! But he stopped and took the time to talk with me. One of reasons I wanted the big dress was so I could have ‘trash the dress’ photos. Christopher was so excited about this that I knew right away he was our photographer.”
Jason chose to wear a linen shirt and pants while Jodie went with a gorgeous white dress, with cascading train. Jodie says they both loved how they looked and were both really happy for each other! Jason was happy; “I have a good wife…she let me wear what I wanted! Hair and makeup was done by Jess, of Salty Dolls Hair Salon. As Jodie was being prepped and glammed by Jess, she received white roses and a card that read “To my beautiful bride, love you!!” from Jason. She finished getting ready by having her short, flirty veil pinned on and it was off to the ceremony! Jodie decided not to use the bouquet that is included with the Wickaninnish package. Rather, she sent Wedding Planner Laura a picture of the bouquet she wanted and, voila, it appeared! Crab Apple Florals used hypericum berries and circus roses with wound grass. At the last minute, Laura wrapped Jodie’s grandfather’s ring into the bouquet for her.
Jason and Jodie loved that they took their time with Christopher – even taking breaks between shots. “Christopher was so casual about everything that it relaxed us. He was absolutely perfect as we walked along and laughed together. He just kept capturing actual moments as they happened.” As they neared the end of their time together, Christopher suggested that they start the ‘trash the dress’ photos. Jodie loved his vision. “He told us there was a garbage can just as you leave the beach area. Let’s make this a literal ‘trash the dress’ and take pictures of you throwing it out at the end!” So that’s what happened!
FROM ONE BRIDE TO ANOTHER: “Sometimes your original idea doesn’t happen but be ready to be surprised when the new idea turns out even better!” Upon returning to Edmonton, Jodie and Jason sent wedding announcements to family and friends that featured photos of their elopement. “We wanted everyone to feel like they had a taste of our experience!” Jason says, “At the end of the day I liked my wedding. I liked that it was so simple in the sense that everything was taken care of and then it would happen. There was no stress and we got to sit back and enjoy. Most of all, what I liked about my wedding was my bride!” Jodie agreed about the lack of stress. “But I also loved that I got to enjoy a lot of things I wanted – beach, forest and trashing my dress, all at once! And that I got to do that with Jason.” ■
Jodie and Jason spent the rest of the evening relaxing, with the four course dining experience created by the Wickaninnish Inn chefs, delivered to their room. A cake had also been made by the Inn and they had carefully finished it with the willow tree cake topper that Jodie and Jason had brought with them. They also chose to have the wine pairing with their meal. “It was all very fancy and yet intimate. We were able to eat this amazing meal in our robes and just be laid back.” The bottle of Cristal didn’t hurt, either! GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 23

A STYLISH CAMPBELL RIVER WEDDING Photography by Lee Simmons of Island Life Photographics (♥) (www.islandlifephotographics.com) Story by TheWeddingRing.ca BRIDE & GROOM: Vicky Christmann & Micheal Lee Wedding Date: August 11th, 2012 Ceremony: Mike’s Parents house RECEPTION: Shelter Point Distillery (www.shelterpointdistillery.com) CEREMONY RENTALS: All in One Party Shop (www.allinonepartyshop.com) HAIR: Sean Salon in Campbell River MAKE-UP: Merle Norman Cosmetics (www.merlenorman.com) CHEESECAKES: Cheesecakes 101 (www.myappyplace.ca) Vicky and Micheal met in 2003 when they were assigned to the same floor of the dorms at the University of British Columbia. Over time - and many shared interests - they became good friends. That friendship remained solid, but it wasn’t until much later, in 2008, that something clicked, and Vicky realized she may have more than friendly feelings for Micheal. They began dating and soon knew it was true love. Micheal had been holding onto the ring he planned to propose to Vicky with for some time. He just couldn’t decide exactly how to ask her. Finally, he decided to make it intimate. After an afternoon spent snowshoeing up a logging road, they came to a beautiful view overlooking Campbell River. They were resting on a rock, with Vicky in front of Micheal, when he suddenly put the ring in front of her. With the gorgeous landscapes 24 • The Wedding Ring Magazine { VANCOUVER ISLAND } | vancouverisland.theweddingring.ca
surrounding them and the romance of the moment, it was easy for Vicky to say “Yes!” Micheal says he loves everything about Vicky, especially “her positive outlook and that she is such a nice person.” Vicky says, “Mike is my home. He is very caring, down to earth and the list goes on!” Vicky’s mother, who met Mike in 2003, seemed to have always known. She was often asking Vicky about him, even keeping a picture of him on her fridge. She said “I always knew he would make a good son in law!” Mike and Vicky looked for a venue that would show off the beauty of the Campbell River area. The incredible, unique Shelter Point Distillery ticked all the must-have boxes with its sophisticated feel, ocean frontage and barley fields. They chose brown and green as their colours to keep things natural and let the venues speak for themselves. Handmade invitations wrapped with green ribbons were sent to family and friends across Canada. Vicky found her dress near her family home in Elmira, Ontario. “It wasn’t what I thought I would wear. It had a vintage Spanish feel with lots of lace. I am glad I kept an open mind and tried it on!” Her two bridesmaids wore lovely custom made dresses, as did the flower girl. Micheal and his two groomsmen rented their Black and Lee tuxedos from Jim’s Clothes Closet in Courtenay. Micheal chose a cream vest and tie while his groomsmen wore sage green. Both Micheal and Vicky’s brother wore

their grandfathers’ cuff links. Vicky chose Sean Salon, of Campbell River, to do her hair on the morning of her wedding day and used Merle Norman Cosmetics for makeup and nails. Bouquets of brightly coloured flowers arrived and Vicky couldn’t have been happier with how they turned out. The ceremony was held at Mike’s parent’s beautiful property on the water. Mike says that a lot of work went into the yard that summer getting it ready. “It seemed like every weekend we were working on the yard!” The results were worth it; hydrangea bushes were scattered about the space and two large trees were planted to symbolize the start of life together. All in One Party Shop in Campbell River also provided various items needed to complete the look. Friends of the family offered their house for Vicky and her entourage to prepare in before the ceremony. “I was able to walk to my ceremony,” laughs Vicky. “We wrote our own vows onto scrolls which were wrapped with a thread and put in a jar of sand.” The ceremony was officiated by Pat Allen, who organizes volunteers in the hospital where Vicky works. Micheal met Vicky halfway down the aisle. When Micheal first saw Vicky he had to remind himself to ‘keep it together”! After the ceremony, Vicky and Micheal spent some time with Lee Simmons of Island Life Photographics (♥) having their photos taken at Miracle Beach Park, Salmon Point and Shelter Point Distillery. “Lee Simmons was a pleasure to work with. I am heavy into photography and love his style. He is easy going, listens to your requests and manages to find a great
shot anywhere. At the ceremony, we didn’t even notice him there, yet he was able to capture many beautiful shots. Our pictures all had that vintage classic look to them which we love. The vintage truck that a neighbour lent to us was great, too!” While Vicky and Micheal were with Lee, guests enjoyed the lovely weather at a cocktail reception on the patio at Shelter Point Distillery. Their neighbours, Jeff Hyde and John Drummond, who are internationally known musicians, entertained guests with live music and the bar offered British Columbia wines. Doug Ware, a family friend and retired chef, along with Doug’s friend, Kaili, and his aunt, Alinda, served guests appetizers which included fresh prawns from Comox and salmon from Campbell River. A fun slide show played which covered the couples childhoods and romance. Ben from Comfort Zone Foods, created a local and artsy buffet supper. Instead of a cake, scrumptious cheesecakes of various sizes and flavours (made by Cheesecakes 101) were displayed for guests on DIY stands made by Vicky. “We worked hard on projects like centrepieces, napkins, guest book and a gift box/seating chart area with a unique photo tree.” Centrepieces were created from driftwood and gerbera daisies, with candles used to complete the look. Vicky and Micheal were honored to have their first dance, 45 Years From Now, by Stan Rogers performed by Ellisa Hartman. Another highlight of the reception was when Vicky’s mother, during her speech, asked the couple to check under their table. They found two large bottles of single malt whisky. “Everyone enjoyed
that!” laughs Micheal. The couple chose to donate to the Kenya Education Endowment Fund on behalf of guests and during the evening Micheal and Vicky would ‘show skin’ or kiss for donations! The size of the donation gave the two masters of ceremonies the right to decide the action! The safety of their guests was very important to Vicky and Mike. Over thirty family and friends had travelled from Ontario and they all stayed in Campbell River and Mount Washington. They took advantage of the Safe Ride Home Program run by volunteers at the Kinsmen Club who drive buses with the funds supporting the Club. “This way our guests were safe and we helped out the community!” Mike and Vicky were happy with their whole day. Vicky says “even though there were some hiccups in the day, that’s what made it interesting and perfect to us. My best moment was when I saw Micheal coming to meet me as I walked down the aisle.” Micheal learned a lot about weddings throughout the process. “It was an eye opener as to how much planning is involved – though I admit Vicky did most of it. It was especially amazing to see so many people we hadn’t seen in so long. It was great and I wouldn’t have changed a thing.” ■

Cheri, of With Love Wedding and Event Planning, and Tricia, of En Vied Events, created a wedding design palette guaranteed to inspire you, thanks to their unique mix of both the mod 70’s style, James Bond-esque décor and today’s romantic, detailed approach to design. They explain, “We wanted to create a unique look with lots of texture and dimension, without overwhelming the entire concept; using the basic black and silver as our base and working in the yellow and white pattern into the design.” Cheri and Tricia took some of the distinctive details, often associated with 70’s décor - such as funky patterns and bold colours - and added the unique retro touches from that decade that are making a comeback today. “We used the pop art inspiration and incorporated it into our martini table, which was a fun way to display the James Bond feel.”

Karen, from A Sea of Bloom, used a collection of milk glasses with a mixture of fun, colorful flowers to go with the mod-70’s theme. The flowers provided a fun pop of colour against the grey, black, yellow and silver basics of the table concept. Blooms included a collection of Red Mokaro orchids, orange tulips, green button mums; orange alstroemeria, olga yellow mums, with accents of bold greens such as succulents followed by fern leaves, mini boxwood, and jade green Trachelium. The bridal bouquet was a collection of red mokaro orchids, green and yellow mums, orange tulips and orange roses. Orange roses have only recently been added to the rose colour spectrum, and can stand for desire, enthusiasm and passion. ■ SAVE ME! THE ULTIMATE VANCOUVER ISLAND PROPOSAL An EXPERT TIP by Sarah Groundwater-Law, one of Shaw TVs The Wedding Belles and now, co-host (with Aubrey) of The Proposal television series!
PHOTO, TOP LEFT (BELLES): AubreyJoyPhotography. PHOTO ABOVE, RIGHT: Marnie Recker Photography (www.marnierecker.com)
SARAH & AUBREY SAY :: If women dream of walking down the aisle in a white dress, then men (and women!) dream of asking the love of their life to take that walk (we hope!).
Here are some tips on planning the perfect Vancouver
Asking the big question, ‘Will you marry me?’ automatically instills anxiety, stress and an overwhelming sense of uncertainty.
to us with his adorable story, we discovered that he
When we became the hosts of Shaw TV’s new hit show, The Proposal (www.shaw.ca/theproposal), we began to truly understand all of this. Here’s the premise: Men or women apply to be on the show with their stories of love and creative proposal ideas. If chosen, Shaw helps them pull it off while capturing the whole event on camera. We got the first in abundance. The latter not so much. About 90% of our applicants had no idea how to propose. That’s where we came in. We put our heads together and came up with ten fun proposals, three of which ended up being on Vancouver Island! Whales, The Wickaninnish Inn, and at the Race for The Ring – all in a day’s work!
Island proposal: ♥ Incorporate a shared passion. When James came and his girlfriend Helen shared a love of surfing. The obvious choice was to set up a proposal in Tofino at the gorgeous Wickaninnish Inn. A white sand beach, private dinner and a piece of driftwood became the perfect recipe to make Helen’s dream come true. ♥ Make it Fun. Asking the question is serious business, so why not have some fun getting there? The Wedding Ring’s Race for the Ring (www.theweddingring.ca/ victoria-race-for-the-ring) was a scene of an impromptu proposal that had couples on a wild chase through the streets of Victoria, completing a scavenger hunt with tasks. The ultimate prize was a diamond ring. The race itself was both physically and intellectually challenging. What better way to test your skills at working together as a couple before walking down the aisle? Plus you
spend a day together laughing, arguing, talking and end it with some happy tears. A perfect proposal indeed! ♥ Come from the Heart. This may seem obvious, but sometimes nerves take over and it’s easy to forget. Start from the heart. This is what we learned with Tom, a man who came to us dreaming of making Peggy his wife. His proposal united the heritage of his people, Kwakwaka’wakw and the couple’s love of nature. Incorporating the orca into his proposal was Tom’s way of telling Peggy she was part of his family, heritage and culture. His heart plays an even bigger role but you’ll have to wait to see it! At the end of the day, you can’t mess this one up. A ring, a question and bended knee will always work! If you are still clueless, you’ll just have to apply to be on Season Two of The Proposal! The sun shines on the Race for the Ring We were up bright and early, along with a lot of other wedding professionals, on September 15th, 2012 for the first annual Race For The Ring (www.theweddingring.ca/victoria-race-for-the-ring) event in Victoria! Couples were invited to complete in a series of challenges (gals carrying the guys over the threshold, fishing in ponds, eating cupcakes, etc.) that took them to downtown Victoria wedding venues. There was lots of fun as the gals were invited to step into old wedding gowns and chop off what they didn't like! Cameras were all around as the crew from Shaw TV’s series, The Proposal on Shaw (shaw.ca/theproposal) shot footage of the Race for an episode and local
news stations, CHEKTV and CTV Victoria, were shooting as well. Our MC for the day, Ron Larson of Hi-Way Productions (www.djpro.ca), started things off with a bang in front of Armeni Jewelers (www.armenijewelers.com), our official sponsor of the diamond ring! The finish line was at the Fairmont Empress’s (www.fairmont.com) new Ivy Ballroom where Home for the Honeymoon (www. homeforthehoneymoon.com) hosted the contestants and prizes were given away to the stylings of Vancouver Island DJ’s (www.vancouverislanddjs.com)

CATERING TO THE BRIDE expert tips
An expert tip by April Dawn-Best of Victoria Marriott Inner Harbour (www.marriottvictoria.com) The dust has settled, the heels are off, the ties are loosened and your guests are reveling in how amazing your wedding was. We all know the first question everyone is asking: How was the food? After all, cuisine is one of the biggest decisions on your wedding day. Whether it’s the presentation, quality, or the menu variety and options, the food at a wedding helps set the tone for your friends and family. Here are some tips on choosing and keeping a caterer...
PHOTO courtesy of Victoria Marriott Inn Harbour
♥ Ask a friend: No one knows better than the customer whether a caterer does a good job, so ask friends whose taste you share if they have any firsthand recommendations -- or horror stories! ♥ Be clear on what’s included. Some venues or caterers will include the extras, while others will charge. Be sure to ask what the caterer supplies, such as tableware, glasses, linens, etc. ♥ Book as far in advance as possible to ensure that you get your top choice caterer and your date. The average wedding is reserved one year in advance. ♥ Getting to know you: Weddings take planning, and you have built a relationship with your consultant. Will the same person you work with when planning also oversee service on your wedding day? ♥ Does the caterer have a license? This means that their business has met health department standards and has liability insurance. Make sure
it includes a liquor license if you’re having a bar. ♥ Can the caterer provide alcohol? Or can you handle the bar separately? If you can provide it, is there a corkage fee? How and when will you get the alcohol to the caterer? If the caterer will provide it, do they have a flexible wine list, and can you make special requests? ♥ Ask for a tasting of your menu. Are they flexible with dietary restrictions? ♥ What is the caterer’s average price range? Are costs itemized depending on the foods you choose, or is there an all-inclusive flat rate? Does the caterer have printed price sheets for food selections? ♥ Does the caterer also do wedding cakes? Can you use an outside bakery? Is there a cakecutting fee? ♥ How involved is the caterer in a typical reception? Do they work like a wedding coordinator or banquet manager, taking care of cueing the band, telling the couple when to cut the cake, adjusting the schedule? ♥ Cost: Do they require a deposit? When is final payment due? What is their cancellation policy? Bon appétit! Victoria Marriott has extensive experience in on-site and off-site five star Catering Services. Victoria Marriott will meticulously create the perfect culinary experience for your special event and can easily provide cuisine for up to 500 guests!
Hand Crafted First Impressions! An expert design tip by Aimee Rounding of Open Invitation (www.open-invitation.ca)
I love feeding my passion for helping people bring their unique wedding visions to life. It’s exhilarating to meet with brides for the first time, collaborate, and together, create a stunning invitation. A wedding invitation is the first glimpse guests
will have of your special day, so it should reflect what guests can expect when they arrive at your wedding. This first hint should leave your invitees anticipating your beautiful day (and hopefully viewing your invite as a keepsake!). How do hand crafted designs help you do that? Custom designed invitations, which are made to order, allow you to be very specific about which design elements you use, such as paper stocks, ribbons, colour and accents. You are able to collaborate with the designer until it is just right! Everything from postcard Save the Dates to flight ticket invitations can be created. You dream it and your designer can come up with it! Whatever inspiration or colour combination you choose, it will be perfect because it will be yours. Your personal vision can carry through to other aspects of the wedding. The colours, fonts, and

overall design of your invitations can be adapted for seating cards, table numbers, signs, garlands and menus. This thematic continuity will draw your guests into the reality (or escape from reality!) that you want to create. The day is yours to sculpt! Remember some basics though. Send your Save the Date cards out six to eight months ahead. It is perfectly acceptable today to ask for RSVP’s through social media but be sure that your more traditional guests receive this in paper form. Invitations themselves should be sent out six to eight weeks prior to your wedding day. A lot of time, effort and love goes into crafting fine handmade invitations, and your guests will be delighted when they receive their personal invite! FOR MORE DESIGN IDEAS: WWW.OPEN-INVITATION.CA
Photos, this page: Ophelia Photography (www.opheliaphotography.com) ally special and memorable. When I found out she would be showing her new line of wedding gowns on the runway at the Bridal Exhibition I knew it was the perfect opportunity to propose. Victoria's wedding community of vendors being small and friendly, word spread quickly after I first mentioned my idea to a few of her colleagues. Within days, I was contacted by the producer of a new reality series called The Proposal (www. shaw.ca/theproposal). I spent the month before the proposal organizing and scheming. I designed a custom made ring with a local jewelry designer and a friend of Lily’s, Emma Glover (www.emmagloverdesign.com). Lily was just preoccupied enough that when she did notice I was on my phone more than normal, out running 'errands', or emailing constantly that my haphazard excuses took too much of her precious time to get to the bottom of. The day of the exhibition, I felt prepared. We had a dry run rehearsal the night before when I told Lily that I was there helping set up for the show the next day. The next morning, I was having a great time watching her do interviews and doing what she does best. She loves her work and was having fun so it was really good to see her enjoying it all coming together. Finally it was time. The plan had all gone smoothly up to this point, then all of a sudden it changed. WHAT?!
For brides who attended the Fall 2012 Bridal Exhibition (www.bridalexhibition.ca), there was a rather large ‘extra’ during the fashion show debut of Lily Kennedy Custom Gowns (www. lilycustombridal.com)... a live proposal on stage! To add to the excitement, it was being shot for the television series, The Proposal, to be later aired on ShawTV (www.shaw.ca/theproposal) in one of their episodes.... We interviewed Sean and Lily to find out what it was like to not only propose (and be proposed to), but to do it live, in front of hundreds of brides and wedding vendors, and with television crews taping every moment... SEAN: I knew I wanted to marry Lily soon after I met her so I wanted to make our engagement re-
The cues I had practiced and run over and over in my head evaporated in an instant with a fake emergency. I was told a curtain had fallen and was whisked away to fix it. RIGHT. Supposedly they had never met me, yet some how I'm the one out of 100 they pick to fix a FALLEN CURTAIN??!! I spent the entire fashion show hiding backstage, and finally I watched my girl bow on stage. Now it’s REALLY time! I dodged models making my way to her right in front before she got away. I caught her, and as soon as I looked at her the words I had rehearsed thousands of times in my head were suddenly lost. I was completely blank. Sweet. With an audience. And a TV crew. I got down on my knee and asked the love of my life if she would marry me. She said "Yes"!! And that's what counts!
All the while, I had my sidekick and best friend, Puffle (most people call him Sean, hee hee) beside me. The runway show started, and everything I had worked for in the weeks leading up was all coming together. I was so happy, and finally relaxed for a minute to enjoy the show, when Puffle disappeared... to go fix a CURTAIN??!!! Whatever... So he was going to MISS MY FIRST FASHION SHOW EVER!!! I was mad. And sad. But mostly mad. I watched the first few dresses come down the runway, then had to dash backstage to do my designers bow after the finale. I'm not much of a 'showboat' so my plan was to look straight ahead, speed walk to the end of the stage, do a perfectly choreographed curtsy, and exit all within about 4 seconds. It was all going as I had pictured it would until one of the models BLOCKED ME ON STAGE during my escape! Mad again. Suddenly, I hear a familiar voice over the microphone. It was my Puffle. He said hello very nonchalantly and asked me to come back out in front of everyone. I was confused, but really happy to see him. I buried my face into his chest to hide from all the attention and had no idea I was completely distracting him from the whole reason we were there. With an audience. And a TV crew. He was about to propose! He got down on his knee, choked out a few words, and gave me the most beautiful ring I've ever seen. Afterwards, it was all a blur with news stations interviewing us and family and friends congratulating us.... It was amazing! ■
LILY: I was really excited when I arrived at the Bridal Exhibition because I was going to be on TV!! I was told by Laura of The Wedding Ring that I would be followed around by a TV crew, profiled by the Wedding Belles on being a local wedding gown designer, and featuring my new line in a runway show in front of hundreds of brides-to-be! Right up until the fashion show, I was organizing my models, finishing and styling my dresses, all the while being interviewed and distracted by the cameras and flashes chasing me around. I didn't realize the whole thing was a set up for what turned out to be one of the best days of my life. GET LOCAL. PLAN FABULOUS! • 43

Greetings! Time is flying! I’m starting to experience a certain phenomenon that I was told about by other brides – time moves faster the closer you get to your wedding. ;)
I’m now at the six-month-out mark for my wedding, and I’ve been busy! In the past few months planning and coordinating has definitely been on my mind. I had my first wedding dress fitting with the lovely Lily Kennedy (www.lilycustombridal.com), who recently got engaged herself. Congratulations Lily! The fitting

to be there early to smooth out any difficulties and be able to stay to bless your meal, if that is your wish. Your marriage should be the only one on their mind that day!
So what should you look for in your officiant? Make sure you meet with your officiant in a casual setting and see if you bond. They should really get to know you and should be able to come up with ideas for your ceremony that will suit you. It doesn’t matter if you are planning a traditional ceremony or an offbeat wedding, there should be trust between your officiant and yourself.
Another great way to feel certain of your officiant is to ask for a video of one of their previous ceremonies. And be sure to be specific on how you wish them to dress for your day. Nothing is more disappointing than your officiant turning up in jeans for your black tie wedding!
Your officiant should also be able to guide you through all the necessary legalities, follow up on the paperwork, run the rehearsal if you wish, and write a ceremony that reflects you as a couple. Be sure that you are the only couple the officiant is marrying that day. You want them was great. I also recently had my first consultation with local artisan, Emma Glover (emmagloverdesigns. com), who is going to design our wedding bands. I’m so excited to work with these creative ladies, and feel very grateful that Victoria has such amazing talent in the wedding industry community. The opportunity to co-create a specific vision for my wedding makes planning that much more special! In the next month I have three goals: to choose my invitation suite and send out save-the-date cards, and coordinate the weekend itinerary, menu and decorating details with my lovely wedding coordinator, Carmen.
