Ted and Meghan met nearly a decade ago while working together as lifeguards at the local rec centre. They were fast friends until roughly five years ago when that friendship was changed by Ted who stole a midnight kiss on New Year’s Eve! And if you ask them, they’ll both admit that they’ve been madly in love ever since, even though that meant finding ways to manage a long distance romance while each finished their education. Ted proposed during an annual camping trip at Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park. He packed a bottle of champagne and Meghan’s grandmother’s ring along on a hike to their favorite swimming spot. Ted proposed on the rocks above the riverbend. After Meghan said “Yes!”, the pair wandered along the path, grinning from ear to ear. Soon the job of planning began and it fell mostly

upon Meghan since Ted had returned to school in Ireland. Ted helped out wherever he could, such as with picking the wedding colours (emerald and aqua) during a Skype video chat. Patient parents and a supportive wedding party also helped Meghan throughout the whole process, including her aunt who created no less than 40 tin lanterns for the reception tables! Strathcona Park Lodge seemed to be a perfect fit for Meghan and Ted, especially after a forest engagement. They explained, “It felt like an adventure without being too far from home.” And with guests booking rooms at the lodge, their wedding grew into a fun yet romantic weekend adventure for everyone in attendance. The Lodge arranged zip-lining, ropes course adventures, canoe, kayaks and several other

Ted and Meghan were over the moon about the cuisine provided all weekend by the Lodge. “The food was incredible - fresh, local and tons of it! There was a welcome barbeque on Friday night, a catered full antipasti and champagne toast following the ceremony and a full buffet style dinner at the reception. The highlight was definitely the cedar planked salmon cooked over an open fire.” experiences for the guests. “It was a big goal of ours that our wedding didn’t involve a lot of ‘hurry up and wait’ for our guests and all the activities for them really helped us avoid that,” Meghan told The Ring. A pleasant surprise for Meghan and Ted was that the lodge turned out to have no cell phone reception which meant their guests were truly immersed in the experience for the weekend. Meghan found her gown in Seattle while her wedding party found their dresses at Shades of White (♥) (www. shadesofwhite.com) in Victoria. Finding a florist local to the lodge seemed almost impossible until she met Ramsey and Ramsey Flower Merchants in Victoria they created the flowers and then sent them up to the location in coolers! The day at Strathcona began with nearly forty brave wedding guests meeting Ted and Meghan at the lake for a Polar Bear Swim in honour of their meeting as lifeguards! Meghan and her entourage then went to prepare at her mother’s secluded cottage where everyone sat on the deck. At one point Ted and his
groomsmen went paddling by on an early morning canoe ride! Hair was done by long-time hairdresser, Roxy, who had made the trip out to help. The ladies finally took their bouquets of cymbidium orchids and sedum wrapped in French ribbon and climbed into the white war canoe paddled by the Lodge staff. It was a entrance no one would forget! The ceremony beside the lake provided a stunning view. Meghan describes it, “My close friends Mike and Drew played an acoustic version of ‘Ho, Hey’ by The Lumineers as my father walked me down the aisle. Mike even learned to play the mandolin for the occasion!” Brawns Photography, made up of husband and wife team, Spencer and Theresa, went along for the whole weekend. Meghan had been instantly drawn to their work and was thrilled with how they captured the love, laughter and fun of the incredible day. Meghan was especially happy with how Ted was able to relax in front of the camera. “Spencer did a great job
making my camera-shy groom feel comfortable and confident!” Instead of a traditional cake, special women in their lives were asked to make a signature dessert. Ted and Meghan then shared mini cupcakes from Pure Vanilla since that’s what they had shared the night of their first kiss! One special moment for the couple was when the bridesmaids and groomsmen tag-teamed their wedding toasts, even breaking into an impromptu song at one point! The dance floor was hopping all night as DJ Paul Affleck, created a real dance atmosphere late into the night. Music was important to Ted and Meghan since random dance parties often break out in their lives! Meghan and Ted were thrilled to have created a space for loved ones to share their talents. BEAUTIFUL BODIES For those of you who don’t know me, I am the coproducer of the Vancouver Island Bridal Exhibition and the crazy lady you will see running around the shows in a ball gown! A few months ago I read an article online about a department store in Sweden displaying size 14 mannequins. What followed was a storm of criticism that they were ‘condoning obesity’. After reading this, I proceeded to rant and rave online about how ridiculous this was. Then it really got me to thinking about how many women out there struggle with their self-image. All that stress and worry about a specific size. And never more so than when it comes to the all-important wedding day! So many times, we look at ads from wedding designers whose dresses are modeled by size four girls who are 5’ 11”. Which is great for those ladies in the world who fit those measurements but what about everyone in between? So I decided I wanted to do something to help change the way women see themselves and to help re-define their body image.

I may not be a size four runway model, but anyone who is around me knows I love my curves and truly believe that the size of my waist has nothing to do with my worth! I believe that everybody is beautiful and that every woman should embrace her inner goddess at all times, but especially when she is a bride! I truly feel that beauty is not about the size you wear, but about the way you present and feel about yourself. I decided I wanted to celebrate the beauty of women of all types. So I gathered together the talents of three of the island’s best wedding professionals and, with the help of a group of fabulous and fearless (standing in the street in pretty under things takes some bravery!) foxy ladies, BEAUTIFUL BODIES came to life. Courtney, of Boudoir with Courtney, knows all about how to make every woman feel beautiful, so she was right at home with all our lovely ladies! My goal with BEAUTIFUL BODIES is to feature the confidence and sexiness that can (and do!) exist in every woman - regardless of their size. If I could offer a bride, or any fab woman, a piece of advice it would be this: “True beauty comes from inner confidence, so remember whether you’re a size 2 or 22 – every bride is beautiful!” ~ Beckie Ross

The sun was shining and the excitement was high as contestants began to gather on October 6th at The Bay Centre (www.thebaycentre.ca) in Victoria for Race for the Ring 2013. Lots of effort was put into 'bridal wear' and Ann Louise Jewellers (♥) (www.annelouise.ca) was showing off the incredible ring that was going to be given away in just a few hours. This year’s challenges created by island wedding professionals were both fun and the useful, such as making mocktails, ringing church bells, lacing up dresses, identifying flowers and table details, tasting macaroons, chocolates and cupcakes (that was a messy/yummy one!) as well as tying a knot. And let's not forget throwing the bouquet and dancing up a storm in the Centre Court of The Bay Centre! On top of that, one of the couples was chosen to receive the free wedding at the Modern Bride Show on February 8th! Our winners were over the moon and great sports - even getting down on one knee!
