What a week!! First issue out, distributed, and many events to attend. This past week was a whirlwind of new activities, meet n greets, great local shows and making new friends. As we begin this issue, I am reminded how great it feels to be a part of a “community” by simply attending a listed event. In our digital age, we’ve come to identify our device as our fifth appendage. Rarely taking the opportunity to be a part of something physical, and thus missing out on our simplest human trait, physical connection.

rowing up, it was my dream to attend a real life fashion show, so when the news came that I would be attending an exclusive event for Grand Forks Fashion Week, it met with great excitement on my end. I showed up early. I felt awkward at first. Nervous. I’d been to fashion events before (hell, I’d even been IN one), but this one felt different. It felt … official. The moment I stepped in the door I was greeted with a red carpet, a notorious step & repeat wall, and the chatter of busy influencers making last minute adjustments. I felt out of place, yet I somehow simultaneously felt more in place than I had ever felt before. I wandered a bit, photographed the decor, admired the view. It wasn’t long before Rachael and Anne, the coordinators, found me. My nervous energy was met with their astounding excitement and gratitude, and I could do nothing but return the favor. In our excitement I was almost too frazzled to ask the questions I’d been so eager to present, but I managed still. I asked them what this event, The Fashion Affair, was all about and how it got started. Rachael was quick to tell me that they started the event in hopes that they would be able to bring the community together and showcase the wonderful local shops. Rachael, herself, owns RH Standard and Anne owns Avant Hair & Skin Care Studio. I then asked what they had been doing to advertise their event and really get the work out there. Anne told me they had been using a lot of social media, but their biggest form of advertising had been word of mouth. There’s nothing like the talk of the community to bring things together. Food was the first priority after everyone had shown up and settled in. Ticket holders definitely got their money’s worth with this delicious buffet of meat, cheeses, chicken, and deserts. If not for nicety, I probably could’ve gone back for seconds (and thirds, and fourths…)! Shortly thereafter, the show began. The first thing I noticed about the show were the gorgeous ensembles. I was shocked to see such high fashion and wonderful styling coming from local spots.

The involved shops were definitely bringing some fierce game to the table and I was nothing less than impressed. The second thing I noticed, however, was the incredible diversity amongst the models. All shapes, sizes, ages, sexes, and abilities were involved. It was heartwarming, to say the least, to see all of these models coming together and having a good time despite their differences. After the show I had to find Anne and Rachael to tell them what a wonderful event they had put on. The after party had started when I found them. They had that gorgeous post-show glow. “How are you feeling?!” I asked, enthusiastically. “Tired,” they both responded, and after some laughs they continued to tell me what an incredible feeling they both had from the night. I continued, “How do you feel everything went tonight?” “Honestly, it was hard to know,” Rachael told me. “I was downstairs with the models all night, getting them ready and sending them up. It wasn’t until after the show, when I came up and saw what a great time everyone was having, heard their praise and applause, that I knew everything had gone great. That, to me, is a huge success.” I couldn’t help but agree. When I had asked earlier about what their worries were, they had told me that they just want to make sure everyone felt like they got their money’s worth. I truly believe that everyone there left feeling like they got just that, if not more than. Overall, it was an incredible experience that I’m so happy I was able to attend. The Fashion Affair 2018 Participants: Avant; RH Standard; Prett y B; Curious; Kitt sona; Glitz, Glam and Tan; Key Bliss; Voxxy. Newcomers this year include: Pursey; See Dick Run; Badman Design; Ann Love Boutique. You can find them all all on their respective websites. We encourage you to shop local and help support your community in these bold adventures!

hen you think about Grandma the word Saloon has never followed it. But here in North Country, the paring of contrasting words often leads to great stories behind the meanings. In this case, the story lies within the food and service itself. First opened by “Grandma Brochi” in 1869 as a boarding house for the sailors of the Great Lakes, in Port of Duluth, the restaurant endured several of Americas defining moments (WWI/ Great Depression/WWII), up until 1942. In 1976, Grandma’s grandson, Mickey, re-opened and revived the location with the same tradition of food and service. The menu has no doubt changed, but the home feel has not. Grandmas Saloon and Grill is a place where patrons can enjoy themselves, indulge, relax, and… have a drink. It is, however, Grandma’s Saloon. Grandmas Saloon and Grill. 522 Lake Ave South, Duluth MN.

while browsing the internet telling you something is wrong with your mac, ignore it! Even if they say your Mac is infected with a virus. In fact, there still are no viruses for the Mac. Macs can spread Windows viruses and malware to other Windows machines, but macs will remain unaffected. To this day, Macs do not require antivirus software. To keep your Mac out of trouble, stay away from any sites or torrent downloads that do not come from legitimate software vendors. Purchasing or downloading software from Apple’s App Store will ensure that you have clean software, and will give you years of trouble free computing. Author: Doug Liebl Owner, Adoptamac
WIN METALLICA
Lately at my shop, I have come across a piece of software that many people are downloading onto their Macs thinking that it is protecting or helping their Macs. I believe it is a form of “Malware” (potentially hostile, intrusive, or annoying software). The software I am talking about is called “MacKeeper”. MacKeeper is an “AWARD WINNING all-inone system utility that includes 16 powerful maintenance features that FULLY optimize, protect, control, and clean your Mac.” I disagree. First the software lures you in by claiming something is wrong with your mac, and that you should install their software to correct your problems. Sometimes it will install itself without the user even knowing!!! Many people have reported the software has not caused any problems. Others say it has caused a host of problems from slowing their Macs down, deleting pictures, or corrupting programs. Some report this software has even disabling their Macs operating system rendering their computer useless! Why do I think it is malware? Because software that specializes in malware removal such as Malwarebytes, CCleaner and Bitdefender will isolate any MacKeeper software and recommend you delete it. If it (MacKeeper) is so helpful, why do antimalware apps recommend deleting it? If you see a MacKeeper ad popup
