elcome!! And I say this with exciteW ment, joy, anticipation, happiness, fear, anxiety..... an “all in one” emotions
rollercoaster, when one is embarking on a new path. My “back story” starts when I began a new journey in the upper midwest ,“True North Country”, several years back. During this time, I had this burning realization that there was something amiss in the way the area’s entertainment, art, music, food and local events where represented, or under represented for that matter, within the “prevailing” news publishers of the area. With no roadmap, or “weekend update”, of scheduled events for the week in the surrounding areas, I would venture, blindly, in search of the best dish, the best drink, the best bartender, the best “hole in the wall”, the best food & drink specials, the best places to meet people, and most importantly the best live music. In this stumble, I created new friendships, met new faces, tasted some great food and heard new talent.. Finding this “best kept secret” in True North, I wanted to share my experience, and provide a roadmap to the weeks events. A Weekend Update! This publication is created with the intention to provide a roadmap for those in search of an entertaining evening, a weekend plan, a “first time” experience doing xy-or-z . . . or all of the above! Likewise, this newsweekly is published with those talented artist, creators, and individuals in mind who are seeking a larger audience. That band that seeks its first break . . . That chef that seeks a cult following . . . That artist’s first showing . . . that writers first publishing . . . and so forth. With intention, I invite you to enjoy this first issue and all subsequent issues. More importantly, "The Weekend Update" invites you to go “in search of” with BLINDERS OFF!!

A
t the budding age of 10, I knew with all my heart, soul, and body, that I wanted to be a rockstar. I remember it vividly, it was the late 80’s and the hairbands were killing it on MTV (really? I have to explain MTV?) We had just gotten home from a family outing, where my parents had purchased a toy “play” guitar for all us kids to play with. I instantly took that guitar and setup to the “stage” (the front porch) and went to town. I can’t say what exactly was the song, all I remember were two things about that “performance”: 1.) I was making some untuned, squelchy noise for an imaginary crowd (mind you this is a Mattel(c) toy), and 2.) the crowd was loving it!! Horrifyingly, reality hit as abruptly as the AquaNet stench from my sister’s hairdo. A neighbor friend my age from across the street, suddenly joined the chorus then quickly yelled for me to stop, as my siblings gathered in the patio window to point and laugh. Yes!, it was a momentous occasion for me; I, for a split second, was in a hairband: and I was rocking it!! Since the time of my budding performance on the porch, however, I have “retired” the Mattel toy guitar and let the rock gods provide the soundtrack from my youth to adulthood. Over the course of my life, I’ve had the privilege of seeing a variety of rock bands, artist, and local musicians. From small venues to festivals to arenas, and back again. Not sure how as a “poor” 20something, but I digress. Last weekend, I finally went to the rock show my 10 year old self would have only dreamed of... Def Leppard, at the FargoDome. DL holds, like other iconic bands of the era, the timeless struggles of “rags to riches”,
“doors slammed in their face”, “romantic ending” Hollywood big screen story; complete with car wrecks and casualties. (If your not familiar with the “True Hollywood Story” of DL, it’s a good one so you might want to look it up). I, for one know the story so, my intent is to connect with my inner 10yr old and enjoy the show as I first saw it on MTV in the 80’s. Sporting the bands gear, some ripped jeans, AuquaNet overspray, anticipation on overload, and a couple of drinks in hand, we finally made our seats about an hour into the coheadliner’s set: Journey; another equally infamous rock band from era (again, search the “True Hollywood Story” to get caught up). Full Disclaimer: I made the mistake of reading the reviews from the previous nights show in Minneapolis (Target Field), which weren’t encouraging. However, my experience couldn’t have been more contrasting from the Target Field show reviews. The crowd at the FargoDome was clearly there to see DL. Yes, there were Journey fans about, but the electricity from the audience was suede in the brits direction. From the moment the band hit the stage, their iconic hits rang for 2 hours straight. Starting the set with “Rocket”, Interluding with “PSSOM”, and ending with “Rock of Ages”, their sound seemed to transpose the margin of time when that music was created. The notes and riff ’s were hit on key from every instrument. The sound was clear. The classic jangly “80’s” guitar, coupled with the synthetic drum snare, rang the depths of nostalgia as I hoped they would. Although, Joe Elliot’s vocal range struggled to hit the high notes, the bands harmonic talent well made up for this absence. After this show, the band takes a two week hiatus before hitting the US East and West Coast respectively, then International dates in October and ending midDecember in London. I am grateful I finally had a chance to see this show, and if I had planned it a little better I would have spent the extra “beer bucks” on the VIP tickets for a proper meet and greet. For those of you who are on the fence about seeing a band from your youth.... DO IT!! Summer is still with us for the next month or so. Fly to a new city and check out this show! My only suggestion is, do it in an arena, at night, while wearing your best 80’s gear!

MUSIC “The Sea! The Sea!” was the shout of rejoice given by the ten thousand roaming Greeks when they caught sight of the Black Sea after their long, perilous trip and realized they were saved from death.
Self described Indie Folk-Pop band, The Sea The Sea, told this story as they prepared for captivating performance in Brigid’s Pub. It was a surreal experience, the sounds of their instruments and voices mingled with the bright magenta lights eclipsing all other colors of the pub. I nearly forgot to take photos in the midst of it all. I was somewhere else entirely. During their break I stepped outside to recollect and cool off from the warmth of the gathered bodies. There were a lot of people there to see the show. While outside I met their friendly drummer, Stephen Struss, and scored a little interview with the band after the show. I’ll save you the play-by-play, but Mira and Chuck were awesome to talk to. Chuck’s mom is from Norway and he spent a lot of time there as a kid, so being in Minnesota was like taking a trip back to his childhood — minus the mountains. It seemed they were just as happy to be here in Bemidji as we were to have them (and that was a lot). They describe their music as “harmony-rich, lyric-driven songs. Simple and true.” After seeing their spectacular performance, I can confirm this with great confidence. It was also just announced that they’ll be performing a song for the podcast “Welcome to Night Vale”, which, in my personal opinion, means you know it’s good! Nightly specials, will have you LOL’ing and interacting with the bar patrons sooner than expected. Especially, if the event for the evening is “Name Night”, or “Sexiest Construction Worker”, or “Patron Party”, or “Cardi B Bar Tab Boogie”… in this case the name of the event is irrelevant; the point is you will find your inner wild child at Borrowed Bucks. degrees, it’ll lose only about 20 percent. Something that’s not an issue is overcharging. Contrary to what you might think (or have been told), leaving your phone or laptop plugged in all the time is not bad for its battery. That’s because your gadgets, the batteries in them, and the chargers you attach them to are actually pretty smart about the way they do business. Trickle charge—what your battery gets when it’s connected and full is way less detrimental to the battery’s health than a larger discharge would be.
UNITY
o matter how many times you bring it back to life, your battery will die someday, or at least degrade into a shadow of its former self. That’s unavoidable. Most lithium-ion batteries have a rated lifetime of somewhere between 500 and 1,500 charge cycles. One cycle is just one bout of discharging, but how much energy you discharge in one go—a measure referred to as depth of discharge (DoD)—matters big time. Lithium-ions really hate a deep depth of discharge. According to Battery University, a staggeringly exhaustive resource on the topic, a li-ion that goes through 100 percent DoD (the user runs it down all the way to zero before recharging) can degrade to 70 percent of its original capacity in 300-500 cycles. With a DoD of 25 percent, where the user plugs it in as soon as it gets to 75 percent remain, that same battery could be charged up to 2,500 times before it starts to seriously degrade. What’s far more dangerous to a battery’s well-being is heat. Lithium-ion batteries despise heat. A li-ion battery that’s been exposed to temperatures of around 100 degrees Fahrenheit for a year will lose about 40 percent of its overall charge capacity. At 75
