BARE-FACED GENEROSITY Albanvale’s Bryan Lewis hasn’t been clean-shaven for almost 10 years, but that’s about to change. The truck driver and his wife Joanne will both go under the clippers next month to raise $2000 for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Mr Lewis, 31, has been growing his beard for 18 months in preparation for the charity event. He will take the entire 280mm off at Brimbank shopping centre on March 16. His children Brylee, 8, and Kimba, 6, will colour their hair blue and pink respectively. “The girls are sad mum will be losing her hair but are adjusting after we explained that it’s to help seriously ill people,” Mrs Lewis said. The family will hold a barbecue fund-raiser at Masters Burnside on March 2. \ BEN CAMERON

waiting for repairs puts tenants in a fix New research data reveals many tenants are waiting up to two years to have repairs carried out on their houses, but they don’t speak up for fear of being evicted. That is a key finding of Home Sweet Home, a community legal centre report looking at standards of rental accommodation for low-income earners in the west. According to Brimbank Melton Community Legal Centre managing lawyer Stephanie Tonkin, it is “appalling” that

tenants have to wait so long for repairs on rental properties. A separate Brimbank report, to be released next month, reveals the level of rental stress and homelessness is significantly higher in Brimbank than the rest of metropolitan Melbourne. Home Sweet Home recommends harsher fines and penalties for landlords who shirk maintenance responsibilities. A total of 100 tenants – mostly people experiencing financial hardship or newly arrived migrants – were part of the study,

which found renters were often unaware of their rights. More than 70 per cent needed one or more repairs to their property. Ms Tonkin said more needed to be done to empower tenants to take their complaints to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. “We don’t believe clients and their families should be living in appalling conditions,” she said. \ BEN CAMERON » consumer.vic.gov.au/rentright

An appeal against a five-year sentence for the stabbing of a Braybrook man has been thrown out in court. Avzi Ejupi was jailed for five years last year after pleading guilty in the County Court to two charges of attempted murder and one charge of recklessly causing serious injury on April 30, 2012. The Supreme Court heard that Michael Jones confronted Ejupi in the front yard of a neighbouring Braybrook property about 11.30pm after observing someone trying to break into two vehicles. A scuffle broke out between Ejupi, Mr Jones and his father and cousin. Ejupi, then 38, produced a knife and stabbed Mr Jones three times to the torso. The attack left Mr Jones with a ruptured spleen and collapsed left lung. Emergency surgery saved his life. Ejupi escaped in a taxi but was arrested on May 4. He admitted to the stabbing but said it was in self-defence. Ejupi’s defence argued the original sentence had been “manifestly excessive”, and said the sentencing judge misread and overstated Ejupi’s criminal history. In rejecting the appeal on February 6, Judge Phillip Geoffrey Priest said the sentence was appropriate. “No aspect of the sentence can be characterised as excessive. Without surgical intervention the victim would likely have died.’’ The court heard Ejupi had a history of violence and had convictions for dishonesty and drug-related offending, and armed robbery. \ BC

A food recycling program in Sunshine is redirecting perfectly good grub to thousands of needy people and renewing the spirit of others who feel like they’ve been thrown on life’s rubbish tip. Social enterprise A Gesture, in partnership with national charity SecondBite, has been helping disadvantaged people by rescuing food from major suppliers such as Coles and Aldi since 2010. A Gesture also provides accredited training to disadvantaged people from all walks of life, including the homeless, those with disabilities or criminal histories, and at-risk school leavers. The program gives people like Norman Turner, 58, a reason to get out of bed. Mr Turner, who suffers from an acquired brain injury that has left him with slurred speech, works part-time at A Gesture’s Sunshine warehouse. Having been employed since he left school at age 15, he was devastated when declared redundant in June, 2010. He told the Weekly he felt like “a plastic or cardboard milk container … buried in landfill”. “I fell into a very dark, foreboding and dangerous place called depression that I couldn’t escape from on my own,” he said.

BRIEFS man in court on doctor attack A 48-year-old Sunshine North man has faced court charged with attempting to murder a neurosurgeon who was stabbed at Western Hospital in Footscray last Tuesday morning. Michael Wong was stabbed multiple times in the foyer of the hospital and was dragged to safety before being operated on by his colleagues. He was in a serious but stable condition. Kareem Al-Salami appeared briefly in Melbourne Magistrates Court last Tuesday afternoon charged with attempted murder, intentionally causing serious injury, and recklessly causing serious injury. Defence lawyer Rainer Martini said Al-Salami’s first language was Arabic and he had limited English. But he was aware of the extent and seriousness of the charges, Mr Martini said. Magistrate Duncan Reynolds ordered that Al-Salami be remanded in custody until a committal mention on May 13. \

Older residents in Brimbank are being encouraged to make use of a new seniors-only exercise park in Sunshine North. With platforms, steps, bridges and bars, it’s designed to keep over-60s in shape for daily tasks like climbing stairs and gardening. Seniors are also being invited to the park to take part in an 18-week trial of twice-weekly exercise sessions, of one hour and 90 minutes’ duration. Participants will make three visits to Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus for lessons on muscle strength, balance skills and general health. \ BC

property potential investment \ Industry experts give MARK BUNKER the low-down

P

roperty investing can be a tricky ballgame for beginners. Overnight success is unlikely, but sticking to the fundamentals can be the difference between someone who despondently sells up within their first year, and those who stick to their plan and build equity. Here are some basic things to consider when buying an investment property:

Property Cycles The market’s peaks and troughs are influenced by a number of things such as the global economy, inflation, consumer confidence, unemployment, housing stock, population growth and overseas investors. While a property market can crash, it typically follows a pattern defined by a few years of steady rises in property values followed by shorter-lived flat periods and decreases in house values as the market corrects itself. More people are happier to invest when the market is prospering – often midway into a cycle – than buy at the bottom of a new one when buyer confidence is generally lower but the rewards are potentially greater.

Knowing What To Buy As the nation’s population grows and lifestyles change, what makes a good property investment also changes. A few decades ago, suburbs close to the city weren’t in much demand due to Australians’ desire for big backyards. Now, there’s increasing demand for low-maintenance apartments and units closer to the

city. Investment-style properties are scarcer and often sought by potential tenants and owner occupiers. Director of Bells Real Estate in Sunshine, Stella Kyriakou, says Sunshine and Footscray are hotspots for Gen Y tenants – and therefore investors – because of easy transport access and proximity to the city and universities. “And there are also some wonderful pockets that are now attracting the more cashed-up tenant,” she explains. “Yarraville, Spotswood, Seddon and Williamstown consistently appeal to the higher end of the market for the lifestyle perks and inner-ring location.” Investors should consider things such as body corporate fees, renovation potential, land size, and proximity to services and lifestyle perks. Steer clear of generic developments such as high-rise apartments and the oversupply of new homes in the outer suburbs.

Having A Plan Plan for how long you intend to own the property and know with good certainty the right time to sell. A finance plan is also important as investors can buy through different means, such as self-managed super funds. Things such as finance tax and negative gearing must also be considered, while other things to weigh up are house insurance, fixed versus variable interest rates, cash flow and managing mortgage repayments. Some properties marketed as investment stock may have a high yield or rental return but very little potential for capital growth. Plan for the worst, but expect the best. \

Your success is our future!

It’s crystal clear, waterford’s the place FAMILY FUN DAY \ CATCH UP ON WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THIS POPULAR ESTATE

C

elebrating one of the west’s sought-after addresses, the Waterford estate in Melton is inviting locals and homebuyers to take part in a bumper spread of free, family-fun activities between noon and 3pm on Saturday. Guests can enjoy free face-painting, a jumping castle and barbecue while exploring the sprawling 38-home display village, parklands and community footprint. Waterford has experienced a succession of rapid stage sell-outs in recent months as homebuyers seize on the community’s affordability, proximity to existing services and abundance of forthcoming facilities. Waterford’s project director, Chris Betts, said he was thrilled by the community’s soaring popularity, which has led to stages selling out in record time. “Waterford has grown considerably in the past 12 months and we’re thrilled to see how well the community is resonating, with purchasers looking to snap up their dream location,” he said. “With our focus on beautification and family-friendliness, residents are making the most of the estate’s new parkland and walking tracks, enabling catch-ups with neighbours and the forming of new friendships. “Over time, our community will mature with a series of interconnecting parklands, shopping precincts, schooling zones and recreational reserves that will service our 2400 residents as well as the wider Melton community.” With the recent launch of stage 8, purchasers can snap up some of the remaining land adjacent to the planned sporting ovals, schooling zones and shopping precincts;

Land ahoy: Dave and Angela will make Waterford their home. (supplied)

prices start at just $142,000. With a selection of house and land packages available on most blocks, stage 8 offers homebuyers a selection of options with sizes ranging from 413 square metres to 581 square metres. \

bout once a year I get a hankering for the great outback vastness, and there’s no better way to satisfy it than to drive to Perth. What other national highway gives you 2350 kilometres between traffic lights? And 147 kilometres without a bend? And doubles as a runway here and there? There’s a world-famous bird observatory out here, Skylab crashed i asked if I here, old telegraph stations have could been engulfed by sand. There drive one to are dingoes, brumbies, emus, perth wedge-tailed eagles and kangaroos. You can see whales from jagged coastal cliffs, go for days without mobile coverage, meet fruit-fly inspectors and pay more than two bucks for a litre of fuel. The Hume Freeway this ain’t. So when Mazda unveiled its new 3, I asked if I could drive one to Perth. It didn’t miss a beat, but taut suspension meant it did miss a kangaroo. This is a nice thing. It handles surprisingly coming in a close second last year. well, rides easily and remains comfortable You have the choice of two beautifully even after eight to 10 hours. It also gets terrific flexible petrol motors, this one and a economy out in the bush. The only thing that 138-kilowatt 2.5-litre, and all models are worries me is the price. It starts at $23,792, available with six-speed manual or six-speed not bad value given the equipment, but it’s auto, the auto adding around $2000. Go for a lot more than the $19,990 (negotiable) for the top model with auto and you’ll finish run-out models, and the $21,000-odd the old north of $40k. model usually started at. But the entry-level Neo will constitute However Mazda thinks it’s sharp enough the great bulk of sales and it’s a good car to make this the best-selling car in the for the money; certainly the best-looking country, which it was in 2011 and 2012, one in its class, especially in sedan rather

Mazda 3 Maxx What is it? A likely best-seller. What’s in it? A 114-kilowatt four-cylinder with a six-speed auto. Is it thirsty? I used 10 litres per 100km in the city, 6.3 in the country. The official combined figure is 5.7.

than hatch. And it’s nicely equipped with cruise, Bluetooth, USB and tricky fuel-saving technology. However, you only get a space-saver spare (you fret about such things when the nearest guy who plugs tyres is 600 kilometres distant) and the high window line makes the rear seat a bit claustrophobic, especially for kids. Rear visibility isn’t great. But if it were just you and me tootling around the city I’d have one of these in a flash. \ reasdown@theweeklyreview.com.au

NWMCA So far so good for Sydenham Hillside in its lastditch attempt to reach the NWMCA Luscombe Shield finals. The Storm is 2/57 in reply to ladder leader Pascoe Vale Central’s total of 111. A Storm win could also open the door for Kealba-Green Gully to pounce on the minor premiership. But Kealba, all out for 143, is in deep trouble against Gladstone Park, which is cruising at 1/43. \ Bowls Deer Park is heading to the Bowls Victoria division 1 finals in prime position as section 1 minor premiers. The Parkers sent a reminder to the rest of the finalists that they’re a force to be reckoned with in a last-round 91-62 flogging of Elsternwick Club. byrne seeks second chance Baseball

Earl Byrne is eager to fulfil his two-year coaching stint with the Sunshine Eagles despite a horror first season. The Eagles won just two matches in Baseball Victoria Summer League division 1, which led to last place and relegation. Now Byrne wants to lead the Eagles’ rejuvenation, although his future is in the hands of the club’s hierarchy. “They did say at the start of the year that it would be for two years,” he said. “Like anything, it can change and it depends on whether they were happy with me this year.” Byrne’s previous coaching job was to start a rebuild at the Werribee Giants, where he blooded several young players who are now at the core of a finals-bound division 2 side. But the task at the Eagles was different, because Byrne inherited an ageing list minus a number of its former stars. He said it was important to “concentrate on what you do have and not what you don’t have” but it’s hard to look past the big names not available. Brothers Shaun and Scott Moore and level-elite starting pitcher Rory Meddick were massive voids, while pitcher Adam Irons, who formed a lethal 1-2 combo with Meddick last summer, could not deliver the same work rate on the mound because of wear and tear. “That’s a big chunk out of your side,” Byrne said. “It’s kind of hurt us a fair bit.” The fors and against makes for ugly reading for Eagles supporters . . . the offence is blunt and the defence is the leakiest in the league. Import starting pitcher Chris Prokupek had a slow start but got stronger as the season wore on. For all of Prokupek’s best efforts, the American did not get the run support needed to make a splash in the wins column. “He threw about 100 innings, so he did a power of work and was at all trainings and every game,” Byrne said. “There were a lot of games he probably should’ve won and I was getting seven solid innings out of him. “We just didn’t give him the run production he needed, which hurt his win-loss ratio.” With youth desperately needed in the Eagles line-up, Byrne turned to teenagers

Alister Lovelock and Aaron Wallis-Taylor with good results, although Lovelock’s story was a bitter-sweet one. He made the lead-off spot his own, hit in the vicinity of .300 and was energetic at shortstop, but snapped his collarbone in the field late in the season. “I’m not sure how long the rehab is for that, but it would have to be 12 months you’d think,” Byrne said. Matt Davis was the pick of the Eagles batters with one-third of the team’s runs “He scored 22 runs for us and batted close

to .300, which is decent in first division baseball,” Byrne said. While the wins were as rare as hens’ teeth, Byrne insists he never lost the players and is keen to work with them again next summer. “The boys have stuck by me all the way,” he said. “I haven’t heard too much negativity and they always went into games thinking they were a chance to win. “We’re just missing a couple of quality bone-fide division one players.” \ LANCE JENKINSON ljenkinson@mmpgroup.com.au

returning players excite parkers Soccer

Tongues were wagging at Keilor Park Soccer Club over the form of two of its returnees in the Brimbank Cup. Goal poacher Lorenzo Carbone and central defender James Johnson had a major impact in the Parkers’ run to cup glory. Carbone, a striker who returned from a stint with the Fawkner Blues, gave the Parkers a cutting edge throughout the tournament.

“He scored some great goals - just starred,” Parkers president Paul Portelli said. Johnson returned after a year out of the game and showed he had not lost touch. “He was commanding at the back,” Portelli said. “He’s back better than ever.” It will be a big season for Keilor Park, who will be in a revamped state league 1 as a result of the start of the National Premier League. The Parkers will face much sterner opposition than in recent years, but the

Anthony Sacco-coached side is not shying away from the challenge. “It’s going to be a really tough year but we’re looking forward to it,” Portelli said. “We have teams like Altona Magic and Western Suburbs, regulars in division 1, and they’ll be packed with stars. “Our pre-season form has been pretty good. We won the Brimbank Cup, we beat Ballarat, who are in the NPL, and we drew with Westvale.” \ LJ

Cairnlea has raised a few eyebrows over the timing of its decision to part company with senior coach Brian Sweeney and assistant Mario Guatze. The coaches were axed with the bulk of the pre-season complete, just 17 days before the club’s first Dockerty Cup appearance and a month out from the start of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 north-west season. Reds president Yagiz Adal said the move was inevitable and there was no point in drawing it out. “It would’ve been disastrous [to do it in-season] and history shows us that,” he said. “We believe we have enough time to prepare for the season and that’s one of the reasons we made the move now instead of leaving it until later.” Differing views on youth development between the Sweeney and Guatze and the club was the key factor behind the sackings. The Reds wanted their coaches to take a more holistic approach and felt that it would be better served through new appointments. “They are fantastic people, and it’s always difficult letting people go,” Yagiz said. “But if there’s one certainty in football, it’s that coaches come and go. It’s the reality and we believe it was in the interests of the club to look elsewhere. “We didn’t believe their view on football and the development of the team matched our thoughts and feelings about how we should be moving forward. “Youth development [is the club’s philosophy] and that was lacking.” The Reds had already lined up Kruni Razov to take over as head coach, with Mustafa Mustafa as playing assistant. Razov was an attractive proposition because of his experience at the level, having led the St Albans Saints to multiple promotions. Razov gave a rousing speech to the players on the night of his signing and made clear his intention to work just as hard with the youngsters as he does with the senior players. “He gave a passionate speech to the entire squad, seniors and reserves and the under-18s,” Yagiz said. “He asked for them to come along for the ride and it’s going to be exciting. “He addressed the youth as well and said; ‘I’m going to be looking at you’. “It’s important that we look after our young ones. We did our research and we believe in him.” \ LANCE JENKINSON

heights poised to go higher VTCA

Twelve months ago to the week, Sunshine Heights inexplicably surrendered a Victorian Turf Cricket Association west B1 finals berth with a loss to arch rivals Sunshine YCW in the final home-and-away round of the season. At the time, the Heights were the hottest team outside eventual premiers Werribee Centrals, riding a five-game win streak. But their horrible pre-Christmas form came back to bite them on the way out. It cut deep for the players present on that day, leaving a sour taste that has never gone away. But it has been a driving force behind the club’s stellar 2013-14 season, which will see the Heights reach the finals for the first time since crossing from the Moreland Moonee Valley Cricket Association. “A few of us were hurting after last year,” Heights co-captain Shane Ramsey said. “You

sort of sensed this would be the year we’d turn it around and it’s all come to fruition.” The buzz word at Ainsworth Reserve is consistency, as the Heights have maintained the same high level of performance across the first 10 rounds to be sitting on top of the ladder with a game to go. Their form in the new year has been flawless, stringing together four wins on the trot to take them to the verge of a home semi-final. “The close games we’ve lost in years gone by, we’ve sort of snuck over the line [in them] this season,” Ramsey said. The Heights are settled in all departments. In Matthew Shawcross, they have the stability of a coach who has been in charge for five years. In Ramsey and Dilum Samarasinghe, they have co-captains who offer differing point of views but manage to come to understanding more often than not. In the side on the whole, it is all hands on

deck and no unhealthy over-reliance on one or two individuals. “It’s a well-oiled machine,” Ramsey said. “There’s not an area of the team where someone is not doing their job.” The Heights ‘big three’ of William Dawson, Akon Mawien and Mohsin Abbas are primed for massive finals campaigns. Dawson is one of just two players in the competition to make 500 runs this summer, Mawien, 16, is a wunderkind who has taken 26 wickets at five and all-rounder Abbas is the glue guy with 23 wickets at 9.5 and 407 runs at 40.7. But the side runs deeper than just those three and is primed for an assault on the major prize. “We have the playing group to go all the way,” Ramsey said. “You never know what’s going to happen on the day, but I think we have the side to keep it going.” \ LANCE JENKINSON ljenkinson@mmpgroup.com.au

winning run may end in relegation VTCA

St Albans could finish the summer on a three-game winning streak and still be relegated from the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1. The Saints are in the box seat on the road against finals-chasing Aberfeldie at Clifton Park, needing just 34 runs to take first-innings points with a full day to play. Tom Langley-Dunn (four wickets), player-coach Andrew Pizaro and Robbie Nikolic (three each) were like kryptonite for the Abers batsman, who perished for a sub-par 120 before the Saints cruised to 2-87 by the close. “Our bowling has probably been our genuine strength for the whole year,” Pizaro said. “Today

was a great effort because of the wicket. It was batsmen-friendly and if you were prepared to stay in, it was going to be hard to get you out. “Our fielding was excellent too, so it was an all-round good effort today.” The Saints could be the next victim of the north A1 four up, four down policy as they entered the final round third last and in need of a miracle to survive. But relegation is not a dirty word for Pizaro as he believes for the Saints may need to take one step backwards to take two forwards. They blooded a host of youngsters this season after a handful of experienced heads left and only now are they finding their feet. It may be too late to save the Saints this summer but the benefits will come down the track.

“Whatever happens, happens, if we get relegated, we get relegated,” Pizaro said. “We lost four players from last year and some were big losses. “But young guys have been able to step up and have a genuine go. “We’ve handed out first XI caps to something like nine or 10 debutants, so in terms of the future of the club, that’s a good thing. “In 10, 12, 15 years, the club could have two or three premierships, maybe more, because of the fact they’ve had to blood guys this year.” For the Saints to survive, they will almost certainly have to beat Aberfeldie outright, and hope both St Francis de Sales and Werribee Centrals lose heavily on Saturday. \ LANCE JENKINSON

VU-Western Lightning has re-captured the hard-nosed defence of recent years but the integration of a new-look attack is still a work in progress. The Lightning had the tightest defence in the past two Victorian Netball League championship division seasons, with Fiona Themann and Brooke Thompson forming an unbreakable duo in the defensive circle. But for the Lightning to go one step better than last season’s preliminary final finish, it needs to fast-track the cohesiveness of the new-look mid-courters and goalers. Time is of the essence for Lightning coach Matt Hills, who can’t afford to play catch-up in what promises to be a close competition. “There are a lot of teams in a similar position to us in that they are building,” he said. “Unfortunately you don’t have a lot of time to do it.” At least Hills has the experience of front-end restructure as in each of the past two years, the Lightning has had to find new avenues to goal. The losses of Megan Fitzpatrick (injury) and Erin McCarthy (overseas) this season have been offset by the arrival of highly-rated Kate Thompson and promotion of youngster Sophie Gunn. Gunn missed the opening two matches, which has meant more attacking time for Sophie Barr, while Thompson has earned a pass mark without setting the games alight in the opening two weeks. Hills says it will take time for the three goalers to mesh and they need to be firing on all cylinders if the Lightning is to make some noise at the pointy end of the season. “Each of the last three years we’ve had different front end combinations, so we’ve have to reinvent it again,” Hills said. The mid-court of Amelia Hills, Elle Bennetts and new recruit Danni Stewart has shown positive signs early but are nowhere near where Hills envisages they will be with a few more games under the belt. “Danni comes out of a successful [City West] Falcons program that plays a different style of ball movement to what we do,” Hills said. “There’s a bit of working in with the way she plays and her working in with us.” Lightning will take netball to the suburbs on Saturday night when it hosts North East Blaze at Sunbury Stadium. \ LJ
