Concierge Corner

George Gaffney, Chef Concierge at The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel

Q: Why do you refer your guests to The Welcome Guide®, and what makes it an important resource for you?

A: I love to get updates from The Welcome Guide®. As a concierge in a city like this one, I need to stay updated on the happenings that my guests care about. The Welcome Guide® makes it easy to get a snapshot of what's important to know.

Q.What should be on every visitor's "bucket list" when visiting?

A: At this time of year, Midtown is the place to be. Rockefeller Center's giant Christmas tree shouldn't be missed. I also love Bryant Park Winter Village for shopping and ice skating. You've got to see the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall at least once.

Q.What is the best suggestion you can give a first-time visitor?

A: There's no excuse for skipping Times Square. Locals often avoid it, but if it's your first time in New York, you have to see it. I've lived in New York City for over 30 years, and I still often marvel at the sheer magnitude of the place. The massive billboards, the theater marquees, and even the crowds. How can you say you've been to New York without that experience?

Q.Where's the best place to take kids of all ages?

420 Lexington Avenue, Suite 1402

POB 1047

New York, New York 10170

A: Kids love the Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Gardens Mercer Labs in FIDI is also an easy choice for all ages. My kids are always begging to go, and I don't mind because I love it too. It's a multi-sensory art space with many rooms and interactive activities. I suggest it all the time.

Q.What is your expert tip?

A: Plan ahead. Many of your favorite restaurants start booking 30 days in advance, so same-day reservation attempts may not cut it. But don't despair. If you're not on their books, you may be able to walk in if you go at the very start of their dinner service or at the end of the night.

BIG APPLE WINTER

ENJOY THE CHILL

It might be winter, but there’s still plenty to explore in the Big Apple. When it’s dry, traveling by foot is still a great way to get around and see the sights.

EXPLORE A NEIGHBORHOOD

No matter the time of year, there are so many fantastic neighborhoods and blocks to check out in NYC. It’s easy to spend an afternoon exploring just one.

DO SOME SHOPPING

It's okay if you weren't quite prepared for the cold. There are dozens of fantastic shopping options to help you gear up for the lower temperatures!

TAKE IN A SHOW

If spending time outdoors isn't your thing this season, stay indoors and take in a wonderful production on or off Broadway! There are so many options.

WINTER DATE NIGHTS

There's just something so hearty about a cozy winter meal. Fight off the chill with a delicious dinner (or breakfast, brunch, or lunch) that's sure to warm you through.

Big Apple Circus Returns! Big Apple Circus Returns!

Big Apple Circus rings in its 2024 season at the iconic Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park! With a legacy of showcasing talented performers from around the globe, Big Apple Circus promises dazzling acrobatics, innovative juggling acts, and captivating comedic performances that capture the imaginations of all.

While fans of Big Apple Circus can look forward to seeing some of their showstopping favorites, the circus constantly reinvents itself, bringing new life into the show every year. “Audiences can look forward to an allnew show with a cast of international circus stars,” Yancey explained of the performers set to wow audiences. “Mihret Mekonnen will demonstrate strength and balance on the Slack Wire, The Flying Poemas soar above the big top on the trapeze, and the antics of the Aduhabda Cartoon Poodles will bring a smile to everyone’s face. And that’s just for starters; there are so many more amazing acts and surprises in Hometown Playground. This year’s theme, Hometown Playground, is a celebration of New York City, its culture and the iconic neighborhoods and landmarks that make it like no other city in the world,” Yancey said of the year’s theme. “Our director, two-time Emmy Award-winner Shanda Sawyer, has created a nonstop show that packs all the magic of New York City into an exciting two-hour production. We can’t wait for audiences to experience all it has to offer.”

From the thrill of daring aerial stunts to the warmth of live animal performances, each show is a testament to the artistry and resilience that define the circus experience. Blending the effects of modern technology with age-old performance arts is no easy feat. “It’s a balancing act, no pun intended,” Yancey told us. “We’ve strived to create a production that appeals to families and children of all ages. Oftentimes, parents and grandparents want to see the more traditional circus acts that remind them of going to the circus as a child, while their kids are eager for something more contemporary. Hometown Playground caters to both through a variety of artistry, comedy, music and special effects.” A treasured element of New York’s cultural tapestry, the Big Apple Circus continues to enchant and inspire its audience season after season and reminds audiences what the holiday season is all about. “This season, the Big Apple Circus will continue its legacy of community engagement by donating tickets to local nonprofits and community-based organizations to offer the circus experience to hundreds of children and families at no cost,” Yancey told us. “We also provide daytime programming for local schools at an accessible price point.”

Weekend inNewYork

December in New York City is one of the best times to visit but also one of the busiest.

The magic of the holiday season is in full swing with a wide array of stunning window displays, towering trees, holiday goodies at every confectionary, and festive food and beverage specials at restaurants all over the city (with a few offering some of the most ornate decorations you’ll find in the city). Here are a few spots we love all year long!

Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer is an Instagrammable burger dream. The brand has locations all over the country (and the world) and serves up a variety of imaginative burgers with fun flavors. The restaurant had us in to check out some of the classic offerings like The Old-Fashioned burger, the craft salads (you can even get a burger salad if you’re cutting back on carbs), and, of course, the world-famous CrazyShakes. We opted for the New Yorker, a sweet confection with strawberries, graham cracker crumbs, whipped cream, vanilla, and a delicious slice of cheesecake on top.

Conwell Coffee Hall is one of the city’s buzziest coffee spots, and it’s easy to see why. The stunning space can be found within the former space of Life & Trust, which was tucked away just off Wall Street. Named after one of Life & Trust’s most known CEOs (J.G. Conwell), this caffeinated hotspot has caught New Yorkers’ and visitors’ eyes and taste buds. We were invited to taste the menu offerings like Avocado Toast, Roasted Tomato Soup, Grilled Cheese Croissants, Roasted Beets with goat cheese, and NYC’s Best French Toast. Not a huge coffee fan? You’ll find various teas and other beverages, including a coffee soda.

Heritage Grand Bakery and the attached Heritage Grand Restaurant & Pizza Bar provide a feast perfect for any palate. While the former offers all the delicious pastries and baked goods you could want, the latter serves upscale Mediterranean cuisine with a delightful range of flavors. During our media visit, we tasted a selection of goods, including heritage meatballs, seafood saffron risotto, and olive oil cake. The ambiance provides a perfect respite from the hustle and bustle of Bryant Park Winter Village, filled with huge crowds of shoppers and tourists across the street.

The Holiday Train Show is a timeless tradition for good reason. As one of the season’s best events (at one of the city’s best attractions), the Holiday Train Show is the perfect outing for families, friends, couples, and even solo travelers. We were invited to experience this year’s show and caught up in the magic of the backgrounds, props, and fun trains zipping past at every turn. Scenes include famous NYC landmarks like Macy’s Herald Square, the Wonder Wheel from Coney Island, Grand Central Terminal, and the Haupt Conservatory (where the Holiday Train Show is housed). The special event is perfect for children of all ages to marvel at the mystery of a bygone era of travel.

INTER is a truly unique immersive experience that allows interaction with nearly all the accessible space in the exhibit. We were invited to visit the space and loved the motion-activated screens, picturesque arches, and all the spaces designed to encourage movement, touch, and many other senses. INTER is intended to urge visitors to take a step back, take a moment to themselves, and be present during their visit. After playing with the elements inside the exhibit, visitors are encouraged to take home souvenir videos in a special INTER booth and make custom bracelets based on their elements and zodiac at the DIY Creation Station.

The New York CityPASS offers a great value for anyone exploring some of the city’s most iconic attractions. We took one for a spin recently and loved the ease of entry and booking—most attractions require reservations, which can be made right in the app. Passes can then be added to your Apple or Google wallet for fast entry and minimal lines. As a CityPASS holder, you can explore New York City landmarks like the Empire State Building and American Museum of Natural History. Enjoy ferry access to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, or visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Other options include Circle Line Cruise, the Intrepid, Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Arts, and the Edge at Hudson Yards.

Hyatt Herald Square offers an ideal location for those looking to explore the vibrant surroundings of New York City. Situated just moments away from Penn Station and the iconic Macy’s Herald Square, this hotel combines convenience with modern comfort. Guests can enjoy clean, efficient spaces equipped with contemporary amenities, making it an excellent choice for both business and leisure travelers. Whether you’re here to shop, sightsee, or attend meetings, Hyatt Herald Square provides a welcoming retreat amidst the bustling city energy.

The Beekman, a Thompson Hotel, seamlessly blends history and luxury in the heart of New York City. The stunning hotel boasts a classic charm with its nine-story Victorian atrium and original architectural details. Each room is elegantly designed with plush furnishings and thoughtful amenities. The hotel also features world-class dining options from renowned chefs, offering an exquisite culinary experience on-site. The Beekman’s convenient location puts guests within close proximity to iconic landmarks such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the World Trade Center, and South Street Seaport.

The Empire Hotel is a historic landmark ideally situated in Manhattan’s vibrant Upper West Side, just steps away from Central Park, Lincoln Center, and Columbus Circle. This iconic hotel combines classic charm with modern sophistication, providing guests with a memorable stay in the heart of New York City. With its chic and stylish rooms, The Empire Hotel offers comfort and convenience, enhanced by luxurious amenities and unparalleled service. Guests can unwind at the hotel’s rooftop pool and lounge, boasting stunning views of the city skyline, or indulge in culinary delights at rooftop.

Broadway Guide Insider:

of the city’s notable locals are also the stars of Broadway. We talked with Kayla Davion, who stars as Jovie in Elf: The Musical, about her favorite places in New York City.

blunt human who has always wanted to experience the version of New York that she’s heard about since she moved from LA. For one reason or another, in her time there, she seems to have lost her glimpse of joy and true Christmas spirit. This is where she meets Buddy, who is just as honest as her and shows her how to believe in the magic of life again!

How did you get your start in performing, and in what other shows have you performed?

Davion- I was raised in the church; my dad was a pastor, so I grew up singing through that avenue. I have always loved performing when it came to singing, but I didn’t really get into theatre until I was aware of an opportunity to do a Musical called Memphis

for a theatre festival that changed my life for the better. From there, I knew I needed to see this new avenue of my life out, and I went to school to study for it at Ball State University! Chirp Chirp! It was truly one of the best decisions of my life. I have since performed on Broadway in Waitress (where I was the first African American woman to step into the role of Dawn), Kong (Original Broadway cast), Tina: The Tina Turner Musical (Original Broadway cast and where I later moved into the iconic role of Tina), and now Elf in Soul Train the Musical and White Girl in Danger

How would you describe your show to someone completely unfamiliar with Broadway?

Davion- I would describe my show as an adventure of Buddy the Elf, who finds out he is human and travels to New York in the beginning to find his dad and, in the end, teaches all those he encounters about the true meaning of Christmas Spirit!

What was the one NYC lesson you learned shortly after arriving in the Big Apple?

Davion- I learned that if you walk slowly through New York, you will be in for a bumpy ride, lol

What are the best tips you can give a visitor?

Davion- Move at a decent pace when walking; people will yell, but it’s just how some people talk, haha. Do not take photos with Mickey Mouse and them on the street unless you are gonna pay, and New York has some of the best Thai and sushi spots! Check them out!

If you’re going out for a night in the town of New York City, where would you go?

Davion- HOLD FAST have some of the best food and drinks and people you’ll ever meet!

Where are your favorite spots to send family and friends when they visit?

Davion- My favorite spots are the walk and Glass House Tavern
