2014-2015
Annual Report
From the Head of School Dear Friends, The education of a child is one of the most important investments one may ever make. While the return on such an investment is immeasurable in many respects, its profundity is never in question for children at The Wellington School. Popular annual events continue to ensure that our students receive a world-class education in an environment conducive to fully engaged learning and from faculty members at the top of their fields whom also feel encouraged and inspired to try new ideas. The Premiere: Forever in Blue Jeans raised more than $115,000 and One Wellington. One Day. One Goal in conjunction with the Columbus Foundation’s Big Give collected $218,681 for the further advancement of our students. Members of our school community showed their steadfast support of highly-individualized and experiential learning through major gift-giving. Their generosity made possible the very programs that allow Wellington to break new ground in independent education, such as Student Engagement Grants and classroom renovations that will push students to evolve and expand their expectations of success and fulfillment as they grow through the years. Within this annual report are just a few examples of how far your support can take our school. An education from Wellington is different from anywhere else and the difference comes from generous donors like you. On behalf of our faculty, administration, and students, thank you for your support – thank you for choosing to invest in The Wellington School. Warm regards,
Robert D. Brisk P ’13 ‘15 Head of School 2

The Impact of a Wellington Education The advantages of a Wellington education are distinctive and varied depending on the individual. No two children will have identical experiences during their time at our school because every student has his or her own path to follow in life. Following his passion for mathematics, Peter Tian ’15 won the $150,000 grand prize at the nation’s premier research competition for high school students before matriculating at Harvard University in the fall of 2015. Upper school students Henry Bacha ’15, Rachel Carr ’16, Charis Nandor ’15, Natalie Twitchell ’15, and Adrian Remnant ’15 parlayed their mutual curiosity for wide-ranging topics into a championship-winning In The Know team. A deep interest in state legislature led to the largest delegation of student participants in school history attending the Ohio Youth in Government state conference. Wellington had the added distinction of several seniors holding high-level offices, including Alex Tobin ’15 (Youth Governor), Adrian Remnant ’15 (Speaker of the House), Caroyln Faller ’15 (committee chair), and Zach Kauffman ’15 (committee chair). For the first time, Wellington had more than one student selected for the Columbus Children’s Theatre Annual Child Writing Project. Vincent Kerler ’23, Allison Klingler ’23, and Kate Thompson ’23 were chosen from more than 1,000 submissions to have their short plays compiled into an entertaining sketch comedy show performed for local school children. For these students, their talent and love for writing brought them early success as playwrights. With the support of annual fund contributions, all Wellington students will continue to pursue areas of passionate interest that could one day lead to achievement and recognition throughout the world.

The Future of Education at Wellington Major gifts are fundamental to providing students with fully engaged educational experiences, preparing and inspiring them for their next steps in life. Head of School Robert Brisk P ’13 ’15 led school-wide efforts to redesign current classrooms and purchase new furniture that would foster optimal learning for all ages. With the support of generous donors, Wellington’s first Classroom of the Future became a Classroom of the Present in 2014. The Middle School Commons was transformed into a remarkable, dynamic educational setting with comfortable, mobile chairs and tables with wheels allowing for multiple configurations depending individual class needs. Both large and small white boards encourage team participation in the brainstorming process while mindshare booths and padded risers facilitate collaboration. Media credenzas with click share capabilities allow students to view and comment on each other’s work in a format similar to professional design firms throughout the world. Several upper and middle school classrooms were similarly upgraded as plans to continue conversions throughout the school remain intrinsic to Wellington’s mission to position students and faculty at the forefront of modern, independent education.

and delicious food and drink in a fun, informal atmosphere. A live auction held that night and an online silent auction open during the weeks leading up to the event allowed for participants to bid on luxury vacation getaways and local fine dining experiences among other items. Guests also had the opportunity to Fund A Need, including Classrooms of the Future and financial aid awards. All proceeds from the event went directly to fostering the unique potential of Wellington students.

Student Athletes Strive To Be the Best The Wellington Athletic Program encourages development of character, pride in achievement, and passion for success. Students are empowered to meet their individual potential in a team environment. During the 2014-15 school year, the athletics program experienced newfound success. In the fall, the boys golf team took 3rd place at the state championship match, while senior tennis player Aashika Katapadi made it to the state tournament as a singles player. During the winter months, the boys and girls varsity basketball teams both experienced winning records in the regular season and finished with their best overall records in the past five years. Senior diver Michael Haring also made his fourth consecutive appearance at the state dive meet. During the spring season, the number of middle school athletes was surprisingly high and resulted in an undefeated season for boys tennis. In addition, freshman tennis player Connor Biernat made a run for the title of state champion as Wellington’s lead singles player. Each student athlete at our school trains to compete with courage and purpose as they strive to be their best both in sports and life.

Passport to Adventure in the Arts A fantastic day filled with arts, crafts, live performances, and youth entrepreneurship, Arts Fest 2015, sponsored by Orthopedic Foot & Ankle and chaired by Stephanie Hyer P ‘24, made creativity the name of the game. Hands-on art booths provided students with materials, including cork, clay, and chalk to design their very own masterpieces. A talent show gave yet another outlet for students to share their burgeoning skills at singing, dancing, hula hooping, tumbling, piano and violin playing, and much more. For those interested in pursuing the commerce side of art and design, a marketplace in The Thomas Family Dining Room gave students the opportunity to sell handmade items such as jewelry, candles, and healthy snacks. A much-loved annual tradition, Arts Fest is a celebration of every child’s innate creativity and the many ways in which it can expressed and fulfilled.

During the Big Give day of philanthropy, Nancy Kramer P ’07 ’09 ’11, the Chair of the Board of Trustees at The Wellington School, made a contribution to The Wellington Annual Fund in honor of each member of the graduating class of 2015. It is Ms. Kramer’s hope that these gifts serve as a reminder to our newest alumni to remain steadfast to the Wellington mission and to foster a sense of gratitude as they embark on the newest chapter of their lives. Wellington alumni are integral to our future successes, and we are grateful for Ms. Kramer’s forward-thinking leadership.

Engagement Grants Access Wellington Student Engagement Grants allow faculty members to explore new frontiers in education by awarding allocated funds for pedagogical innovation. A grant enabled middle school teacher Berc Backhurst to guide his students through the writing and publishing process to strengthen their design-thinking skills. Backhurst worked with a select group of 8th and 9th graders to write, illustrate, and publish a book that conveys the design process, including themes of tinkering, student collaboration, and transformative as well as modular classroom spaces. A student engagement grant can also bring students valuable exposure to professional experts. Upper school students discovered firsthand the connection between art and commerce through a collaboration with the Columbus Idea Foundry, a local “makerspace,” to create a working prototype of an interactive table for the Upper School Commons. After conducting market and consumer research, students worked with resident artists at CIF to finalize their concepts and then use a laser cutter to make their designs a reality. Grant recipient and upper school art teacher Rachel Althof P ’29 considered the process of negotiating ideas with each other as students explored the unique possibilities, as well as limitations, of materials and software to be an exciting adventure in learning and discovery.
