International flavour for Aussie culture melting pot I grew up in a very Anglo-Australian neighbourhood in Ferny Hills in the 1980s. Cultural diversity at my primary school was virtually non-existent, apart from one Aboriginal student and a kid from Sri Lanka whose home I used to love walking past on the way home each afternoon, to smell the alluring aroma of the home cooking taking place inside. Years later, visits to Melbourne City were my first experiences of the multitude of people, cultures and cuisine that vibrant multicultural society can offer. It was enlightening and exciting. This Australia Day, more than 250 locals who have become part of the Moreton Bay community, each bringing bits of the culture of their homeland Down Under, will become Australian citizens. They hail from around 40 nations – from Cuba to Czech Republic, Tonga to Tanzania, Iran to Ireland, North America to Nepal. I thank them all for making the Moreton Bay Region an exciting and diverse place. Read about some of the events that are happening on Australia Day in our local area on Pages 6 to 9 of this edition. – Lee Oliver, Editor

Westerner Flashback The

In 2016, The Westerner community newspaper celebrates its 20th birthday: two decades of informing and entertaining the residents of Pine Rivers, and later the Moreton Bay Region. To celebrate the milestone, this year we will be going back through the archives to revisit some of the biggest and most entertaining stories printed over the past 20 years.

You

CAN afford a rock wall!

THIS WEEK IN 2012: Sharon and Bridgette O’Malley feared wildlife would be threatened if a proposed quarry, which would have taken in areas of Kurwongbah, Rush Creek, Whiteside and Narangba, was given the green light. They decided to fight back, collecting hundreds of signatures for a petition opposing the proposed development. The development application for the quarry, submitted to Moreton Bay Regional Council, was withdrawn in March 2013.

Ex-MP shirty about candidate’s actions By Damian Staveley and Lee Oliver

A

candidate for this year’s Moreton Bay election has poured cold water on suggestions of improper behaviour alleged by former LNP Member for Pine Rivers, Seath Holswich, in an online squabble between the pair. The war of words began last month when Division 10 candidate Kegan Scherf posted an image of promotional campaign shirts on his Facebook page with the caption, “Campaign shirts have arrived!” Mr Scherf is employed as a senior staff member of Labor MP Nikki Boyd, who ousted Mr Holswich for the seat of Pine Rivers at the last Queensland election. Alleging the box of election campaign shirts was photographed in Ms Boyd’s office, Mr Holswich took umbrage at the photo, suggesting to Mr Scherf he should not be mixing his campaign for local government with his work in an MP’s office. He suggested by using parliamentary resources “paid by the Queensland taxpayer, for your Council campaign”, Mr Scherf could be in breach of the Clerk of the Parliament’s Pre-Election Guide. In response, Mr Scherf suggested the box was not necessarily delivered to the office, which Mr Holswich said was not a satisfactory explanation. Mr Scherf subsequently deleted the Facebook post, but not before Mr Holswich took a screenshot of the online exchange. “As a staff member at Nikki’s office, he is not employed by Nikki or the ALP (Australian Labor Party),” Mr Holswich said. “He is an employee of the Parliament, funded by taxpayer funds, and his accountability is to the Parliament’s HR

Manager and Clerk, not the MP directly. “Whether it’s a one-off or whether it’s a sign he’s doing more (campaign work) from there (the MP’s office), I don’t know.” Mr Scherf denied any wrongdoing, saying he would prefer to “focus on genuine election issues rather than the whims of a former MP with an axe to grind”. “There is no allegation of impropriety... and certainly if there was then he should refer it to the Clerk of the Parliament because I don’t believe I’ve breached any guidelines,” Mr Scherf said. “I think it’s just a bit of horse trading from a former MP who’s probably got nothing much to do in his spare time. “I respect the dedication that Mr Holswich has given to the community over the years but the truth is he isn’t even a resident of the (Division 10) electorate.” Mr Holswich also claimed Mr Scherf was attempting to hide his links to the Labor Party. Mr Scherf’s election campaign Facebook page states his most recent employment as being with the Australian Medical Association. “I’m not opposed to him being a Labor Party member/union organiser and running for Council,” Mr Holswich said. “However, I think it’s deceptive to be hiding these important facts from the community you wish to vote for you and then claim independence.” Mr Scherf said he hasn’t denied his Labor Party affiliations, adding that Moreton Bay election candidates ran as independents without party backing. He was recently endorsed as candidate for Division 10 by ex-Labor MP for Ferny Grove Geoff Wilson, who served in Queensland Parliament from 1998 to 2012.

My name is Lacey. I am a Golden Retriever and I am told I am very cute and playful. I chose my new human family three years ago. They took some training, but I am happy to say that it didn’t take long to wrap them around my puppy paws, and I am very pleased with the way they now allow me to run the household. We all went for a holiday to the beach recently, and I was able to show off my amazing surfing skills. They were very happy when I was able to retrieve the balls they insisted on throwing into the waves. I made lots of new friends while we were away and spent many happy hours running along the sand. My humans enjoyed themselves too, watching my antics. I always look forward to my cousins, Sally, Bob and Cricket, coming to visit. We run and play for hours. Humans are right... it’s a dogs’ life!

Jule Barten, Mt Mee Jule is the co-creator of Lollipop Land, a Christmas wonderland exhibit with more than 90 hand-sculpted characters from the North Pole. The inspiration for Lollipop Land… came from a dream, where I imagined the fairies and elves making all of the sweet things for the whole, wide world. My favourite characters in the exhibit… would have to be our life-sized wizard, who was hand-sculpted by Chris Boston more than 20 years ago, and a cute little elf called ‘Little No Name’. It is important for people to use their imaginations… because dreams make wonderful realities and in the words of Albert Einstein, “Logic will get you from A to B, but imagination will take you everywhere!” My favourite Lollipop Land moment… was a little boy who said to his mother, “Look Mummy, the witch is making rainbow soup!” and his mother responded by asking him what he thought the soup tasted like. After a thoughtful pause, the little boy replied, “It tastes like love.” A magical place I remember from my youth… I do remember how exciting it was to see snow for the first time in country Victoria and how much I loved visiting the Myer Christmas windows (in Melbourne) each year as a child. The best things about living where I do… are the peaceful lifestyle and the tranquil surroundings. I’m a nature lover at heart, so I take great comfort from soaking up the beautiful views here and waking to the sound of bird-song. The job I wanted to do when I grew up… I think I secretly always just wanted to be a fairy and I really do believe that my job in life is to make people happy. In ten years time… I will still be playing with fairies. Just because I am growing old, doesn’t mean I have to grow up, does it? Lollipop Land is at Old Petrie Town, Dayboro Road, Whiteside until 24 January. Phone 0412 786 046 or visit www.facebook.com/LollipopLand Australia

Sculptor’s career gets fast-tracked

Mt Nebo contemporary artist Michael Riddle has won a $250,000 commission to create a monumental public art piece to be displayed in Melbourne.

Mt Nebo resident has scooped one of Australia’s most sought-after prizes for sculpture. Contemporary artist Michael Riddle scored a $250,000 commission for a massive artwork alongside the Peninsula Link freeway in Melbourne’s south-east. That is despite him having never done a public artwork before. He beat 85 Australian and international artists to be awarded the Southern Way McClelland Commission, to create a 10m high monumental sculpture dubbed Iconoclast. It is loosely based on the form of an electricity pylon, which has become absurdly mangled under the weight of a large boulder. “This is my first public art commission and I am thrilled to have been selected for this extraordinary public art program,” Mr Riddle said. The contemporary sculptor joins an elite club, with the Peninsula Link public art program commissioning just 14 sculptures over 25 years until 2037, at a total value in excess of $4 million.

Devised to enhance the travel experience along Peninsula Link, the first three monumental sculptures were installed along the motorway in December 2012, before the official opening of the freeway the following month. Each new sculpture is on display on the freeway for four years, before becoming part of the permanent sculpture collection at the McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery in Melbourne. “It is a tremendous privilege to have an opportunity to work on a project of monumental scale, and for it to ultimately be a part of the permanent collection of the McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery,” Mr Riddle said. He anticipates much of the $250,000 commission for Iconoclast, which will be installed on Peninsula Link near Frankston in May 2017, would be taken up with the logistics of bringing his work to life on such a big scale. “We’ll have cranes and trucks and there’ll have to be a structural engineer overseeing it,” he said. “It’s going to be a big process.”

POLICE BEAT Attempted murder charge, Lawnton: A Lawnton man has appeared in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court charged with attempted murder following an incident in which a man was allegedly struck by an arrow. Detectives charged a 37-year-old Lawnton man after he was arrested at the scene of an incident at an Ellis Street residence on 12 January. Police were called to the property around 1.30pm following reports a man had received a puncture wound to his arm and chest from an arrow discharged from a compound bow. The 40-year-old man was subsequently transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment. Task Force Maxima drugs arrests, Bray Park: Five people were charged with drug offences on 13 January as part of Task Force Maxima’s pursuit of outlaw motorcycle gang members organising and participating in illegal activities. Detectives executed a search warrant on a Bray Park address following information received that the address was allegedly being used by a Rebels gang member for the production of illicit drugs. Police allegedly located drug production chemicals and equipment along with crystal methylamphetamine, MDMA pills, cannabis and pseudoephedrine tablets. Those charged, a 51-year-old man, a 39-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman, a 28-year-old woman and a 16-year-old female, were due to appear in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on 19, 22,

or 29 January. Charges also included possession of explosives and a Category M weapon, bail offences, and possessing wildlife (carpet python). Break and enters, Pine Rivers: Electric guitars, wallet, keys, TV, mobile phone, jewellery, tools, household appliances, doona cover, leaf blower, whipper snipper, alcohol, mountain bike, watches, tablets and laptops were stolen from homes in Eatons Hill, Cashmere, Warner, Bray Park, Lawnton, Albany Creek and Strathpine over the fortnight ending 15 January. Houses under construction at Comet Street, Halpine Parade and Bronwell Street at Warner were also targeted, as was a business being built at French Avenue at Brendale. Entry to the new premises was made through bathroom and bedroom windows, by forcing open a rear door, and by removing a glass panel. Ten remote control cars were stolen from a business in Strathwyn Street at Brendale.

hat could be better than becoming an Aussie citizen on Australia Day? Becoming a citizen on the anniversary of your arrival in your new country. From Galway in Ireland, Patrick Clavin and Natasha Wakefield moved to Brisbane eight years ago, arriving on Australian shores on Australia Day. “We had planned to arrive a day before so we could participate in the celebrations and we got the travelling times all mixed up, so we arrived on the morning of Australia Day,” Mr Clavin recalls. The Cashmere couple is two of eight former Ireland residents who will become naturalised Australians in a citizenship ceremony at Strathpine on 26 January. Like many overseas expatriates, they fell in love with Australia after backpacking around the country, including road trips up the east coast. “We just came over as backpackers and eight years later we have our own house… and the people have been so helpful getting us settled over here,” Mr Clavin said. The couple, whose daughter Clodagh was born in Australia, make the most of their adopted nation’s lifestyle options.

“In Ireland it’s always raining and cold and miserable, whereas here it’s fantastic for outdoor lifestyle,” Mr Clavin said. “I love fishing over here and it’s great golfing weather as well. There’s no limitations to what you can do with the weather compared to there (Ireland). “The last day I played golf in Ireland I played in minus two (degrees). I’m completely acclimatised now so even in the depths of winter here I still think it’s beautiful and lovely and warm.” Moreton Bay Region councillor Bob Millar (Division 11) said with 51 people from 16 countries of birth attending a citizenship ceremony at Samford Community Centre next week, it would be the biggest event of its kind in Samford in more than 20 years. Of the 271 candidates to attend citizenship ceremonies at Samford Village and Strathpine on Tuesday, 30 per cent hail from the United Kingdom, with 11 per cent from New Zealand. Other countries of origin of local new Australians include Zimbabwe, Philippines, South Africa, Colombia, Brazil, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Nepal, USA, Iran, Austria, China, Moldova, Italy, Samoa, Fiji, Cuba, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Denmark and India.

Celebration of nation at Samford

T

he Samford Museum’s biggest day of the year just keeps getting bigger. The museum is renowned for its vast historical displays but the list of things to see and do there grows substantially on Australia Day. Families seeking fun on 26 January can step back in time to celebrate the hist-

ory of colonial Australia on our country’s national holiday. Inside the museum grounds you will find a variety of working miniature steam engines and toys, vintage machinery, penny-farthing bikes and demonstrations of rag-rug and old-time butter making and medieval blacksmithing.

Geoff Harris in the heritage school classroom at the Samford Museum, which will host an Australia Day event on 26 January.

Nearby John Scott Park will be full of vintage motor vehicles, with members of car and motorbike clubs assembling over 30 classic four-wheel and two-wheel rides. Samford Rural Fire Brigade will be there with its big yellow fire engine and enjoy tunes from Werner Kroll’s fantastic magic music machine, built in a DC3 fuselage. Visitors can try their strength against the Samford tug-of-war team, or chat with renowned local authors Richard Carroll and Ryle Winn. Plants will be on sale from the Society For Growing Australian Plants, with a display of Australian native stingless bees by Bob “The Beeman” Luttrell. Enjoy tasty billy tea with damper straight from the camp oven, home baked biscuits with tea or coffee, and a sausage sizzle. Local act The Royal Bounty Bush Band, favourites from the days of the old Australian Woolshed at Ferny Hills, will be performing at the museum on the day. The Australia Day event at the Samford Museum, at Station Street, Samford Village is on 26 January from 9am. Phone 3289 2743 or 0417 610 983.

P

atriotic locals wanting to celebrate Australia Day at a free council event will have to travel to Redcliffe or Bribie Island to do so. For the fifth year in a row, there will be no free Moreton Bay Regional Councilrun Australia Day community event in the southern end of the Moreton Bay region. The popular Aussie Arvo family event, which attracted thousands of people to Pine Rivers Park at Strathpine for five years, has not been held for the past four

Australia Days. It isn’t returning, or being replaced by another local Australia Day community event, this month either. The 2012 and 2013 stagings of the Aussie Arvo, introduced by the former Pine Rivers Shire Council in 2007, were cancelled due to rain. The 2014 instalment of the family fun day was canned two weeks before Australia Day, with Council citing the “likelihood of rain” and having to obtain insurance with a higher premium as reasons for the cancellation.

The two free council-funded Australia Day events being held on 26 January are the Aussie Beach Party at Brennan Park, Bribie Island from 7.30am to 7.30pm, and Fish, Fun and Aussie Sun at Suttons Beach, Redcliffe from 10am to 7pm. Council did not respond to questions about whether it is planning a new Australia Day event for the former Pine Rivers area before The Westerner went to print.

esidents of Samford Valley, Eatons Hill, Highvale and Camp Mountain are amongst 48 nominees for Moreton Bay Regional Council Australia Day Awards. They include Samara Jarvie from Eatons Hill, a finalist for the Young Citizen of the Year award who has been nominated for her outstanding community service and charity undertakings. Awarded the Tom Fitzsimon Award for service to Mt Maria College Mitchelton and to her community last year, she has fundraised and generated awareness for

causes such as Caritas, St Vincent De Paul and the Orange Sky Laundry Foundation. “I never thought that the things that I have done were worthy of such an award (nomination), Ms Jarvie said. The 17-year-old also volunteers at food outreach programs, raised $8000 for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave, runs youth group activities at All Saints Catholic Parish at Albany Creek, and has done community work in Timor Leste and the Philippines. “We have much more than a lot of other people around the world, Ms Jarvie said.

Samara Jarvie could become the fifth Eatons Hill resident in seven years – after Jeremy Baldwin and siblings Jenna, Stephanie and Ben Freeman – to be named Young Citizen of the Year when the Moreton Bay Australia Day Awards are announced this weekend.

“I think it’s important for us, because we live in Australia and we have so much, to give some of that back. “I don’t think it’s fair to sit with a TV, a microwave, a fridge, running water and be doing nothing with the wealth that we have. Twelve months after being named the Australian of the Year Local Hero, Camp Mountain resident and founder of the Givit charity website, Juliette Wright, has again been nominated for the esteemed Moreton Bay Citizen of the Year award. Her work to help alleviate the effects of poverty has resulted in almost 130,000 donations to people in need. The Moreton Bay Australia Day Awards, to be announced at a ceremony at the Redcliffe Cultural Centre this Saturday night, also include a new accolade. “I’m so happy that we’ve included a Volunteer of the Year award this year, because there are so many people who tirelessly and selflessly give their time to help others, Mayor Allan Sutherland said.

Practice Hours: Monday to Thursday: 8:30am - 5:00pm Friday: 8:30am - 4:00pm Saturday: 9:00am - 5:00pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings by appointment

Girl Guides, Meals on Wheels, Bray Park State School, 126Army Cadet Unit and VIEW Club volunteer Suzanne Schultz of Strathpine, and Samford Valley’s Chloe Pacey, who has provided more than 100 hours of service to her community through the Samford Leo Club, are also nominated. Ms Pacey’s other community involvements include Operation Christmas Child, Cancer Council, sex slave rescuers Destiny Rescue, collecting clothing for a Kenyan orphanage and support for Helping Hands, funding a prosthetic hand for a Cambodian landmine victim. Australian under-16 futsal player Stinson Whitlock, of Ferny Hills, and Australian ice skating representative Isabel Forrest, of Strathpine, are nominated for the Moreton Bay Youth Sports Award.

Council bites against wild dogs

W

ild dogs at Cashmere are in the sights of local authorities. Residents raised concerns to Moreton Bay Regional Council late last year following several sightings of the wild animals in the area. Reports indicated the wild dogs, a declared Class 2 pest animal under Queensland legislation, had likely originated from the nearby state forest. Last month, Council’s wild dog management team started using cameras and a pre-feeding program in an effort to identify and track wild dogs in the Cashmere area. “Special cameras are in place in council reserves and selected private properties along with a pre-feeding program to get a better understanding of how many wild dogs there might be and their movements,” Moreton Bay Deputy Mayor Mike Charlton said last month. Signage identifying wild dog management areas were erected on council reserves and on participating private properties, he said. Following the gathering of information over the Christmas period, trapping of the wild dogs at Cashmere commenced on 11 January.

Moreton Bay Councillor Mick Gillam (Division 8) said council’s wild dog management program worked in partnership with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Seqwater. Last September, Council banded with Seqwater to conduct a wild dog baiting program near North Pine Dam, including locations in Cashmere, Samsonvale, Mt Samson and Kobble Creek. Cr Gillam said feedback from residents was crucial to limiting the wild dog threat, also in areas such as Mt Mee and the Samford district. “If you notice wild dog activity, particularly in the Cashmere area, it’s important that you report it to council to help us build a bigger picture of the habits and movements of wild dogs,” he said. To minimise the risk of wild dog attacks, residents in rural and semi-rural areas are advised to ensure that pets, poultry and livestock are secured at night, and properties are well fenced. Residents should also limit potential food sources for wild dogs, such as household waste and pet food. Any wild dog sightings should be reported to Council on 3205 0555. www.thewesterner.com.au

elp is just a download away for people with failing eyesight who struggle to read. A Cedar Creek man has developed a simple app for Android smart phones and devices that makes it easier for people to read small and hard to read text. The My Reading Eyes app is a magnifier with image processing, which its creator Olivier Fillon says is successfully being used by people with poor eyesight, including some aged macular degeneration patients. “I thought instead of (people) trying to read with a flashlight or with a magnifier… maybe we can use a mobile phone or Android tablet with a quick application,” he said. Mr Fillon said My Reading Eyes is a “glorified magnifier with the extra functionality that image processing can add”. “It not only increases the size (of text), it’s increasing the contrast by making the writing black on white or white on black,” he said. “It does as well a bit of stabilisation of

I am not really looking to become like a Facebook creator, I’m just trying to give back to the community,” said Mr Fillon, who has also developed an app relating to baby breathing patterns. “It’s simple – it’s not rocket science – and if it can help people, that’s good.” My Reading Eyes is a finalist in the Emerging Innovation Category of the inaugural Moreton Bay Innovation Awards, with winners to be announced on 5 February. eating in Preheat the oven to 170°C (325°F). Grease a 20 x 15 cm (10 x 6 inch) baking dish. Simmer the cream in a saucepan over medium heat for about 10 minutes, or until reduced by one-third. (A good tip to prevent the cream overflowing when simmering is to place a metal spoon in the pan during cooking.) Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions until al dente — a little bit toothsome, but not chewy. Strain the pasta, then add to the pan of reduced cream. Cook for a further 4–5 minutes, stirring to coat the pasta with the cream. Now add all the cheese and stir to combine. Cook until the cheese has melted and the mixture is thoroughly combined. Stir in the ham, spring onion and chives; the mixture should be creamy, cheesy, steamy. Pour into the prepared baking dish. To make the topping, warm the duck fat until melted, either in a saucepan or a microwave. Place the remaining topping ingredients in a bowl, pour the melted duck fat over, then gently massage the fat into the ingredients, until the texture is coarse, like sand. Evenly cover the pasta mixture with the topping. Bake for 10–15 minutes, or until the breadcrumbs are golden and crunchy. Sprinkle with extra thyme, then spoon and serve.

REELTIME with Damian Staveley

Carol Carol is a captivating film. In 1950s conformist America, appearances are everything. At surface level, respectability is sought. Thus, while Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) is in the process of divorcing her husband, she must still attend parties by his side, albeit reluctantly. Her husband, Harge (Kyle Chandler), complicates matters by still being hopelessly in love with Carol. Underneath the surface, though, the duality of human lives is revealed. Carol and Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) first encounter each other in a department store, where Therese is selling Carol a toy for her daughter’s Christmas present. Carol writes down her address for the delivery of the gift, then “accidentally” leaves her gloves behind in the store. The pretence now exists for further contact, which sees Therese visit Carol regularly. Harge, unhappy about the situation, commences proceedings for sole custody of their daughter, prompting Carol to impulsively leave for a road trip, taking Therese with her. Therese, for her part, is grappling with her feelings for Carol as well as her boyfriend, Richard (Jake Lacy). She has to make a choice as to whether she will conform to the expectations of the times, or follow Carol into an uncertain future. Therese is, as Carol puts it, “flung out of space” and Mara, with her stiff demeanour and intense stare, captures this perfectly in her performance. It is as if each emotion or feeling of hers is a new experience. While Carol is seemingly the opposite, exuding a certain confidence, Blanchett’s nuanced performance expresses the complexity of her character. Driven by desire, she acts boldly in her pursuit of Therese, while out of fear she submits to her controlling and punishing husband. Phyllis Nagy adapted the film from the Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt. Adapting a novel presents certain challenges, such as how best to express the nuances of the characters’ actions, which can be explained simply enough by the author but not so in a film. Additionally, the characters and story are usually required to be condensed. However, Carol overcomes these challenges, thanks as much to Nagy’s screenplay as to the rest of the cast and crew. Also worth mentioning is the look of the movie. Cutting no corners, the film is visually stunning, with the closest attention paid to the details of the 1950s aesthetic in which the story is set. The supporting cast is also impressive. In addition to Kyle Chandler, Sarah Paulson gives a notable performance as Carol’s former lover Abby, with whom Carol remains close friends. Carol is a love story: beautiful, heartbreaking and suspenseful, anything but simple. 8/10

Brisbane-based Celtic band Murphy’s Pigs released its fifth album ahead of shows at Tamworth. Photo by Sarah Matthews.

Pigs inspired by Australian colonial past

T

hey’re one of Queensland’s most revered Celtic-flavoured folk bands, but Murphy’s Pigs’ Aussie patriotism shines through on their latest album. Released last week, Larrikins and Knuckle Boys is the band’s fifth album and their most Australian recording yet. The band has veered from its usual Irishthemed songs to produce a CD of original, traditional and contemporary Australian folk songs, which takes listeners “back to a time of miners, shearers, larrikins, slums and ghost ships”. Amongst the album’s 12 tracks are the tunes ‘Ryebuck Shearer’, ‘Shores of Botany Bay’, ‘And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda’ and ‘Streets of Forbes’, about the death of bushranger Ben Hall. Another song, ‘Brisbane Ladies’, dates back to the 1800s and mentions localities such as Toowong, Caboolture, Blackbutt, Kilcoy and Yarraman.

“It’s about drovers saying goodbye to Brisbane, where they’ve been having a party, and they’re going out droving to Augathella,” Murphy’s Pigs guitarist and Closeburn resident Chris Jack explains. Larrikins and Knuckle Boys also features a version of ‘The Whale’, a hit song in 1972 for Australian act Terry Fielding and Fred Dyer that Murphy’s Pigs had previously recorded for the 2010 album Craic Me Up. Fielding is a guest performer on the new recording of his tune, and Jack said getting him to sing on the track was a case of “amazing synchronicity”. “He lives in Melbourne and he just happened to be in Brisbane, in the mall, on the same day we were recording the song,” Jack explains. “He happened to call (Murphy’s Pigs member) John (Graham) or John called him for whatever reason... and away they went. “He’s a really good singer and he does

this bit in the middle of the song that’s just awesome.” Murphy’s Pigs, also featuring Albany Creek drummer Dan Loth, is currently playing 12 shows in eight days at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. “Folk and country (music) aren’t too much divorced. They’re three-chord kind of songs about everyday life,” Jack said. “(Murphy’s Pigs is) ten blokes in suits belting out these Irish tunes. It’s a bit of a change to more traditional country music there (in Tamworth) and people like that.” Murphy’s Pigs, whose previous CD In the Lap of the Hogs won Album of the Year at the Australian Celtic Music Awards, has also performed at Woodford Folk Festival, Gympie Music Muster and Festival Interceltique, the world’s largest Celtic festival, held in France. Copies of Larrikins and Knuckle Boys can be purchased at www.murphyspigs.com.

Motorcycle icon to race to peace

Motorcycling gentleman”, “engineering mastermind” and “legend”. They are some of the terms that have been used to describe the late sidecar motorcycle racing stalwart and innovator Paul Pinfold. The former Highvale resident passed away at Caboolture on 31 December, aged 66. Pinfold, who had returned to Bribie Island from England just before his passing, was admitted to hospital just before Christmas Day with a blood clot in his right lung. He won numerous sidecar speedway titles around the globe from the late-1960s to the late-1990s, racing in countries such as England, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Denmark and France. The English-born racer, who moved to Australia in 1981, was also runner-up for the Australian title with Alan Artus in 1984. “I’ve been lucky I’ve been to every country in the world that races, and my sidecar took

me there,” Pinfold told The Westerner in a 2011 interview. Equally adept on grass and speedway tracks, Pinfold was for some time the oldest competitor in Australia’s sidecar speedway scene. In 2014 he celebrated his 50th straight year racing speedway sidecar motorcycles. As well as being a champion racer, Pinfold was a revered innovator of sidecar speedway bike technology, who designed many championship-winning bikes. Some of his revolutionary bike designs were initially banned by racing officialdom but have since been emulated over the past three decades. Following his passing, Pinfold’s Facebook page was flooded with messages of condolence from hundreds of friends and race fans in Australia, the United Kingdom, Europe and America. Mark Pickett said Pinfold was a sidecar “rider and trailblazer” who “revolutionised speedway sidecar racing in Australia”. Gabe Yates on the run during the Samford Stags’ last match against the Dayboro Cowboys in August.

Adam Mada lamented the world of motor sports having “lost one of the true greats”, while Royce Kent called Pinfold a “motor sports superstar, a champion’s champion, the people’s champion”. Hugh Briotti said Pinfold was “another sidecar legend gone to that great race track in the afterlife”, while Paul Cohen added: “Race In Peace”. Catherine Cookson said she would remember Pinfold as “a true gent with an exceptional mind and passion for all he loved.” Pinfold’s children, Paul Pinfold Jnr, Amy

Pinfold, Sharni Pinfold and Jackie Phillips – former Samford pool manager – wish to fly their dad back to England to be buried in the family plot in Warwickshire. The family has been quoted almost $22,700 to bring him home and honour his wishes of being near his late mother and father, who are resting in the family village of Hatton. League teams to renew rivalry

C

an the Cowboys rope in the Stags, or will the team from Samford maintain their recent advantage against Dayboro’s men? In 16 days local rugby league rivals the Samford Stags and Dayboro Cowboys will square off for both bragging rights and a revered trophy. Since 1989, the arch rivals have faced off for the Lawson-McDonald Shield, which is named in honour of two of the clubs’ www.thewesterner.com.au

pioneers, Jack Lawson and Earl McDonald. Samford, winner of three of the past four games against Dayboro, currently holds the shield. The Lawson-McDonald Shield game will double as round one of the Pine Cup pre-season competition. Defending Pine Cup champions Dayboro will host Samford at the Dayboro Showgrounds on 6 February. Pine Rivers will tackle Pine Central-Holy Spirit in the other Pine Cup game on the same night. The Westerner, Thursday 21 January, 2016

Matt Timms throws down a pitch for Australian Baseball League leaders the Brisbane Bandits.

Timms pitches in for title assault

Timms went on to play for Queensland in the Claxton Shield competition, the precursor to the ABL, and returned to the USA to pitch in the Rookie Ball and A-Ball leagues. Now 29 and joking that he’s “getting a bit long in the tooth”, Timms’ desire to “see if I still had it” prompted him to link with his hometown team this season. “I didn’t want to go out (of the sport) and not play in the ABL and try to prove myself, so I set myself a goal of competing in the ABL,” he said. “The next goal was the All Star Game (in Melbourne in December) and I made it. “I love being able to play in Australia and showcase Australia’s ability at playing the sport.” The next goal for Timms, who balances working 55 hours as a vehicle yard manager with playing and training for baseball six days a week, is to deliver Brisbane a title. “We definitely have the makings of a championshipwinning team, and with the inclusions of Donald Lutz and Travis Blackley, two ex-big leaguers who are probably still good enough to be in the big leagues, you can’t get better add-ons than that,” Timms said. Boasting an efficient 2.41 earned run average this season, the pitcher says he thrives on the mound in pressure situations, a trait that will be vital in the playoffs. “One thing I’ve always enjoyed is being in a tight situation,” Timms explains. “Put me against loaded bases, none out – I love it. It doesn’t matter who I face, I have confidence in my ability.” The Brisbane Bandits play Perth Heat in four games at AFA Stadium at Newmarket starting 21 January.

T

here has been a few times when Matt Timms wanted to give up baseball for good. Given the way his team is currently performing in the Australian Baseball League (ABL), he’s glad he didn’t. The relief pitcher has helped the Brisbane Bandits to top position on the national league standings, securing a maiden ABL playoffs appearance. Better still, success against Perth Heat at Holloway Field at Newmarket this weekend could see the Bandits finish top of the standings and secure home field advantage for the ABL grand final series in early February. Brisbane, which has battled Canberra Cavalry for top spot in the ABL standings all summer, has a three-game lead over their ACT rivals heading into the final regular season fixtures this weekend. Timms, a Warner resident and former Pine Hills Lightning junior player, is grateful he didn’t sever ties with baseball a decade ago. After having regularly played for Queensland junior baseball teams and securing a contract with US Major League franchise the Atlanta Braves, he was prepared to call time on his career at the age of 18. “I had a bit of a hiatus. I had lost the passion,” Timms recalls. “My dad managed to drag me down to a game… 18 months after I quit baseball.

“The next day I got a call from… the president of All Stars (Baseball Club) asking me to come back and play, and it all just rolled on from there. “I’ll have my moments where I get sick of the game and someone taps me on the back and says, ‘No, not yet mate, you’re still good enough to go around, you really need to give it a go’.”

The Tenpin Bowling Association of Queensland’s Inter-School Challenge event will return to a bowling centre near you this August. With prizes and trophies up for grabs – including a position in the prestigious All-Star team – the 2016 edition of the Inter-School Challenge is shaping up to be the most exhilarating yet. Both new tenpin bowling players and aspiring champions can receive plenty of support, tips, advice and training from some of the sport’s best this year, including foreign stars. Top American bowler Kelly Kulick, who has won ten professional women’s bowling titles and one Professional Bowlers Association Tour title, and as an amateur was a seven-time member of Team USA, will be coming to Australia in November to run junior and youth development camps in Queensland. Some of the development camps will be held in the Moreton Bay region. eet Dayboro’s hottest football product. American football, that is. Tyler Ferdinands has been playing gridiron for less than two years but already he is in line to represent his country. The 17-year-old was recently selected in the Australian junior squad, and has his eye on competing at the Under-19 World Championship in China in July. He will attend a four-day training camp at the Sunshine Coast in February, from which the final Australian under-19 team to compete in China will be selected. “At the start of the (last) year I set it as a goal to try and make the Australian squad to represent the country, so to be named in the training squad is a great honour and fantastic opportunity,” Ferdinands said. “Whether I make the final team or not, I know I will gain valuable knowledge and skills (at next month’s training camp) to further develop my game.” Ferdinands hopes to follow in the footsteps of Eddie Kocwa from Cashmere, who played for Australian Outback at last year’s senior world titles in the USA. “If given the opportunity, I would be highly honoured to represent Australia in the

World Cup in China this year and help lead Australia to a successful championship,” Ferdinands said. The teenager plays offensive, defensive and special teams roles with his Moreton Bay Raptors club team, equally capable in the positions of free safety and kick returner as he is scoring touchdowns as a wide receiver. “I try to model my game to wide receivers in the NFL that are very consistent in catching, being reliable for the offence and unpredictable in route running in the face of the defence,” he said. This month Ferdinands saw some of the NFL’s best in action when he attended the Washington and Green Bay playoff game. “I enjoy the strategy and tactics behind the game and the idea that everyone has a specific role to fulfil and must work together effectively in order to achieve success,” he said. “When I mention that I play American football, most people don’t even realise that it can be played over here. “However, it’s growing rapidly and with more exposure, I believe the sport can prosper and become a mainstream sport in Australia.”

Four Saints march to silver medal

F

our Pine Rivers St Andrews Hockey Club players have guided their state to rare success at the Australian Under-21 Indoor Hockey Championships. Paul Comerford, Tom Madden, Mitchell Ivory and Jacob Anderson were members of the Queensland outfit that secured a silver medal in the tournament held in Wollongong last week. It was just the third time in the past 20 years that Queensland has reached the tournament final for the age division. Anderson scored a goal in the tournament final, won 5-3 by the undefeated Victoria side. Victoria led the gold medal match 2-0 after just three minutes, before Queensland fightbacks saw the scores tied at 2-2 and then 3-3 in the second half. Head coach of the Queensland team

was Pine Rivers St Andrews member and Eatons Hill resident Matthew Bradley. Earlier this month former Pine Rivers St Andrews player and first-grade men’s head coach Dylan Elliott coached Queensland to a drought-breaking first open women’s national title since 1995. Brendale resident Adam McClelland captained Queensland’s open men’s team to fourth place at its national champion-

NEW PLAYERS WELCOME Proudly sponsored by

Name: Chandan Smith Club: Pine Rivers St Andrews Hockey Club Team: Queensland Under-15 indoor hockey team Positions: Defensive half, fullback What age did you start playing indoor hockey and why did you choose this sport? I started playing indoor hockey when I was 11. I chose this sport initially to ensure I stayed fit in the off-season and to improve my outdoor hockey skills. What is your favourite/best indoor hockey skill? Being able to tackle the opposition near my goal line and then racing up the field and passing the ball to one of my players to score. I enjoy setting up goals more than scoring them myself – working with my team. What is your pre-game routine? I like to be ready at least an hour before the game, dressed with all my equipment. I drink lots of water. I go for a run to warm up and then for the last half an hour complete a number of training skills with my team to get ready for the game. I use this time to make sure my intensity is up for the start of the game. What are the best things about indoor hockey? The best thing is how fast the game is and with only five players on the field you are always involved. Attributes needed to be a good indoor hockey player? Speed, ability to quickly transition between positions, being able to keep low to the ground to make tackles, and keeping the softer ball on your stick at all times. Who is your sporting idol and why? Liam De Young. He has played for and captained Australia. Liam played for my club when he was a junior. I have had the privilege of meeting him and being trained by him. I love how hard he plays on the field and how he always passes the ball with purpose. What are your goals for the sport? At the moment I would like to continue to work hard to improve my skills. I like learning new things and hopefully this will help me continue to make Queensland teams. What advice would you give to other people looking at playing your sport? To come and try it because it is so much fun because it is fast paced. The game is not well known but if you like speed and keeping fit you will like this game.
