Pete a community champion I didn’t really know Pete Albrow but I do know he loved his town and he loved his town’s footy club. I can’t recall attending a Dayboro Cowboys rugby league match over the past ten years and not seeing Pete in his wheelchair on the sideline, cheering on the players or joining them on field to sing the team song following a grand final victory. He was the team’s 14th man. Sadly, Pete passed away a fortnight ago, but his legacy will live on when Cowboys players young and old run on to the Pete Albrow Oval at the Dayboro Showgrounds. R.I.P. Pete. Your achievements despite your disability are inspiring; your dedication to Dayboro rugby league legendary. Speaking of dedication, kudos must go to Moreton Bay councillors Brian Battersby and Bob Millar, who are edging closer to retirement after serving as councillors for 40 years and 16 years, respectively. Generally politicians aren’t the most liked people, but you must give credit to someone who gives so much to a community via what can sometimes be a pretty thankless and arduous role. Many people complain about government, but only a few put up their hand to run for office in a bid to make things better. – Lee Oliver, Editor

Westerner Flashback The
In 2016, The Westerner community newspaper celebrates its 20th birthday: two decades of informing and entertaining the residents of Pine Rivers, and later the Moreton Bay Region. To celebrate the milestone, this year we are going back through the archives to revisit some of the biggest and most entertaining stories printed over the past 20 years.
THIS WEEK IN 2007: A woman phoned The Westerner office back in February 2007 to report that she had just witnessed a mother being forcibly removed from her vehicle and thrown to the ground during a carjacking in Samford Village. The incident, which occurred less than 50 metres from the local primary school, was one of a spate of vehicle-related crimes across four suburbs that day, resulting in a police pursuit across Brisbane’s north-west and the arrest of two offenders, including a man who faced court on 17 charges. Protesters outside the office of Peter Dutton last week called for the Immigration Minister to stop the deportation of asylum seekers. Photo by Love Makes A Way.
Protesters target Dutton By Lee Oliver
T
he Strathpine electoral office of Federal MP for Dickson Peter Dutton was swamped by protesters twice in three days last week. On Friday, a group of students stormed the office of Mr Dutton, the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, demanding rights for more than 260 asylum seekers who could be sent from Australia to detention in Nauru. Reeshan Zakiyya of Red Flag newspaper reported that the protesters chanted and “blue-tacked petitions with thousands of signatures to the walls”. “Many of the asylum seekers are here in Australia to be treated for the psychological trauma they have suffered on Nauru, and now they are being sent back to an island camp which is not fit for human beings,” protester Lauren Saunders told Red Flag. After reportedly occupying the office for two hours, around one dozen police officers clamped down on the protest. Two days earlier, members of the Christian group Love Makes A Way, who are concerned about refugee rights, gathered outside Mr Dutton’s office to non-violently resist the “abuse of children, women and men in immigration detention”.

“We had a representative approach Peter Dutton’s office to state our intention… to make a stand outside the office,” Love Makes A Way spokesperson Peter Branjerdporn said. “As it happened, the office staff did not open the doors for our representative despite the fact that we assured her the group had no intention of occupying the office as part of this peaceful protest vigil. “The staff told us to speak to police instead. We had an excellent discussion about the abuse of children, women and men in immigration detention with the local policeman who greeted us outside. “He was very understanding and wished us all the best, as long as we acted within the law. We informed him that we will continue to do whatever it takes for all children to be released from immigration detention.” The protests followed a High Court ruling the previous week that could see 267 asylum seekers, including more than 70 babies, deported to Nauru after coming to Australia for health reasons. Love Makes A Way members also prayed outside Mr Dutton’s Strathpine office for two days in December, and asked for him to grant the release of children from immigration detention.

A Samford mother was forcibly removed from her vehicle during a brazen daylight carjacking near a primary school in Samford Village last week. The incident occurred last Tuesday morning in the car park of the Samford Community Pool – and less than 50 metres from the neighbouring Samford State School. Soon after 9.30, a woman was forced from her car, thrown to the ground and her vehicle stolen during a spate of vehicle-related crimes that morning, resulting in a police pursuit across Brisbane’s northwest. A Spring Hill couple were arrested at Ashgrove later that morning.

Curtain closing on councillors’ careers
H
Nathan Oldfield Armstrong Creek Nathan is the founder of Dayboro Business Networkers, which brings together business owners from around the Dayboro district. Why I started Dayboro Business Networkers… I was wanting to start networking with business owners outside of the IT world, to understand what problems they were having that I could provide solutions for. After not finding any existing groups that suited me and seeing the wide variety and number of businesses that responded to a “plug you business” post on the Dayboro Facebook page I put out the call to see if anyone was interested. What I like most about the group... Our members are all small business owners and operators. As such they often work in some degree of isolation and this group enables them to help overcome this disadvantage. It is also very good to have knowledge of what other businesses exist in the area and more particularly what their skills and business approaches are. The benefits of supporting local businesses... I like to support local businesses that in turn support the community events such as the Dayboro Show, Dayboro Day. It’s an easy way to indirectly support community events. I am also involved in the community... In 2011 I created the Dayboro page on Facebook after the floods, hoping it would provide a way for the community to keep in touch during times of natural disaster. I have also been involved with pony club, Scouts, playgroup and little athletics. My first memories of living in the Dayboro district… Realising I need better headlights if I’m going to be driving home at night! In ten years time… I hope to not be staring at a computer screen for as many hours each day. The first Dayboro Business Networkers meeting for 2016 will be held in the council building, 28 Williams Street, Dayboro on 23 February from 9.15am. Visit www.facebook.com/ DayboroBusinessNetworkers
e moved the first motion of the newly formed Moreton Bay Regional Council in 2008 and he passed the final recommendation of the current council. And with that, Brian Battersby rounded out his 40-year career as a local government politician last week. The Division 10 councillor, who since 1976 has served the Hills District as councillor for Pine Rivers Shire Council and then Moreton Bay Regional Council, was one of five councillors who attended their final council meeting at Strathpine on 9 February. Awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to local government, Cr Battersby has attended close to 3000 council meetings and worked with 62 fellow councillors. He cited Pine Rivers councillors Brian Burke and Jan Quinn and Mayor Yvonne Chapman as “people I’ve really enjoyed working beside” and said Moreton Bay Deputy Mayor Mike Charlton was “someone I hold in very high regard and respect”. Cr Battersby, who has lived in Ferny Hills for 47 years and beat 34 candidates on the way to being re-elected nine times, said being an elected representative was less a job and more “a way of life”. “It’s something that if you choose this role and to do it properly there are many sacrifices, both personally and family and time, but you do it because you want to serve the community,” he said. “There’s always jobs and there’s always more than you can do in this role. It’s never that you catch up (on work), it’s the degree of how far you are behind.” Samford-based Division 11 councillor Bob Millar is retiring after 16 years in public office. In his final address to council, he said he was “proud to have played a role in making this region one of the most progressive in Australia.”
Retiring Moreton Bay Region councillors Bob Millar and Brian Battersby before their final council meeting at Strathpine.
“(Moreton Bay Council has) not only been a council to think outside the square but on many occasions to step right outside the square to facilitate and deliver the infrastructure and services to support our residents,” Cr Millar said. He cited Council’s acquisition of a former CSIRO research site, since developed into the Samford Parklands sports precinct and Samford Avenue of Honour, as a major highlight of his career. “Amongst the most personally satisfying experiences of this journey has been the opportunity to work closely with the residents of Division 11 and the many community groups who in their own way work so tirelessly to make Moreton Bay Region the great place to live and enable families to achieve their own aspirations in life,” said Cr Millar, one of five councillors along with Gary Parsons (Division 1), Greg Chippendale (Division 3) and David Dwyer (Division 7) who are retiring at the 19 March election. At a morning tea before last week’s council meeting, Mayor Allan Sutherland acknowledged the contribution of the departing councillors and paid tribute to their spouses, family and friends for their support of the elected representatives.

Bob bemoans “council mischief”
A
departing Moreton Bay Region councillor has urged political aspirants to share governments’ long-term economic visions, while claiming campaigning for next month’s local council elections is being tainted by “skulduggery and mischief”. Councillor for Division 11 Bob Millar will retire from local politics next month after 16 years in office. In his final address to council last week, he said he was at ease with his decision, given what he has seen from some election candidates on the campaign trail. “As this council now enters its final weeks and I see some of the skulduggery and mischief vainly trying to get traction in some isolated corners of our region, it is a decision with which every passing day, I feel more comfortable,” he said. Cr Millar said he was glad that Moreton Bay Council operated “free of the party political machinations that consume some councils and other levels of government”. However, he is perturbed by governments and elected officials who put short-term gains ahead of long-term fiscal responsibility. “It saddens me somewhat, as I look across all levels of Government in this country, to see that good governance is showing increasing signs of becoming captive to the shortterm ambitions and expectations of a community and some of its leaders, who are prepared to sacrifice the long-term economic health and prosperity for short-term gain,” Cr Millar said. “Those same individuals who are prepared to challenge the conscientious efforts of governments to govern well will certainly be ‘missing in action’ when things go sour. “I encourage those colleagues who will be part of the next council to not be swayed from exercising that sound judgement in making the tough decisions that in the fullness of time are proven to be the best for our communities.” Cr Millar said by thinking “outside the square”, Moreton Bay Region Council will deliver “significant” infrastructure and services for its residents, such as the Moreton Bay Rail Link and the proposed University of Sunshine Coast campus at Petrie.
Election sign troubles locals
A
n aspiring Moreton Bay Region councillor has responded quickly after the positioning of one of his election signs irked members of the Samford community. Former Army officer Dick Harrison of Closeburn took to Facebook to label as “absolutely disgraceful” the placement of a large billboard for Division 11 councillor candidate Darren Grimwade on the grounds of Samford’s Avenue of Honour, the memorial for fallen diggers. “The Avenue is a sacred place to me and many others, a place for us to pay

our respects and remember our lost brothers and sisters,” Mr Harrison said. Mr Grimwade posted that the billboard, which was removed the next day, was installed by the sign company in an incorrect location. “Obviously this was not intentional or done in any way to be disrespectful. I apologize for any stress this may have caused anyone,” he said. Samford RSL President Jamie Whitehead doubted Mr Grimwade’s claims, adding that making political statements at a war memorial “is just not right”.

POLICE BEAT Break and enters: Warner, Cedar Creek, Bray Park and Albany Creek were some of the locations for home break-ins during the past fortnight. A dishwasher, toilet, fittings and taps were stolen from houses under construction at Halpine Street and Brownell Street at Warner. Jewellery was stolen from a home at Panorama Drive, Cedar Creek on 8 February. The resident disturbed the offender, a man described as Caucasian in appearance, wearing a baseball cap and carrying a blue backpack. He drove off in a light coloured hatchback, which police believe is a silver Mazda 3, registration 462-GRN, stolen from Darra earlier that day. Stolen vehicle located, Mt Glorious: A vehicle that was stolen from Victoria last year was located at Mt Glorious on 6 February. Police were called to Harland Road after a member of the public phoned Policelink to report a man acting suspiciously. Police arrested a 28-yearold Townsville man, after a search of the vehicle allegedly resulted in the location of amphetamines. He face charges including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possession of dangerous drugs and traffic offences in Brisbane Magistrates Court on 7 March.
Group in partnership with Road Policing Command commenced a three-month operation involving the presence of Road Policing Command units on Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious at night. Anyone who witnesses hooning or the gathering of vehicles is encouraged to report it via Policelink (131 444) or Hoon line (134 666). Motorcycle thefts, South East Queensland: Police are warning people selling motorcycles to be cautious when allowing potential buyers to test ride their bikes. Investigators believe the same man is responsible for stealing at least five motorcycles during test rides in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast since 18 December. On four occasions he arranged a meeting with the seller after seeing the motorcycles advertised online. He then took the motorcycle for a test ride and did not return. He is described as being Caucasian in appearance, aged in his early 30s, about 185cm tall with a solid build, short brown hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo of a fish on his right arm and a tattoo of a wizard on his left leg.
Hooning operation, Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious: Police are cracking down on late night hooning and anti-social driving behaviour that continues to be an ongoing issue for residents of Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious. In January, Inner West Patrol

Winless after two games of the Pine Cup, the Stags will play the Bears when Samford hosts Round 3 of the popular preseason competition at Allan Cash Oval. Samford lost its first two hit-outs of the year, against the Dayboro Cowboys

Dayboro is the only unbeaten Pine Cup team, following comprehensive wins over Samford (26-0) and Pine Rivers (26-6). Dayboro will take on Pine Central-Holy Spirit on 20 February at 6pm, with Samford to tackle Pine Rivers from 7.30pm. Both games are at Allan Cash Oval at Cash Avenue North, Samford Village.

moving postcard of Samford Valley will be beamed to tens of thousands of television viewers this weekend. Locations such as Cedar Creek falls, local cafés, Samford Museum and Minims Rest Retreat will feature on Our Town, to be broadcast on Channel 9 on Saturday. The television lifestyle program focuses on the towns of regional Australia, covering tourism, history and culture, with a profile on regional and economic development.
The Westerner, Thursday 18 February, 2016
Our Town’s producer, Lee Loraine from Visage Productions in Perth, said the show is “basically about where people should visit, live, work and invest in.” “We’ve done three series over here in W.A. (Western Australia).… and it’s been a success and has been received well so I thought it is something which would fit in very nicely in Queensland,” he said. “We made the decision that it would be nice to get some of the Brisbane locations.
“The support from Samford and the community in making this come together was fantastic and it made our job pretty easy. “The people we met were from all walks of life and they were keen to tell their story.” Mr Loraine said Samford, a “beautiful spot and a beautiful setting”, is “not like anywhere in W.A.” “It’s a fantastic location... only half an hour out of Brisbane but you feel like you’re somewhere else,” he said. “The fact that it’s still got its origins from when it used to service the farming industry, and it’s still kept that way… I think that’s the appeal (of Samford).” The Our Town crew and the show’s host, Miranda Deakin, stayed at Minims Rest at Highvale while filming around Samford for five days in December. Dave Gralton from Minims Rest said the Our Town special was “an exciting time for Samford” and a “great opportunity” for the district and its local businesses. This year Our Town will also feature the Bundaberg, Gladstone, Fraser Coast and Capricornia regions of Queensland. The Our Town Samford Valley special will air on Channel 9 on 20 February at 1pm. www.thewesterner.com.au

The late Pete Albrow, bottom right, celebrates with Dayboro Cowboys players following their grand final victory in 2006.
Ultimate honour for late Cowboys stalwart
T
he spirit of the Dayboro Cowboys’ number one supporter will live on, with the rugby league club to name its home ground after him. The playing field will be named Pete Albrow Oval, in honour of the club’s popular Vice-President, who passed away on 4 February after suffering severe head trauma in a fall. He was 51. Dayboro Rugby League Club President Deb Sellin said Mr Albrow was a “very kind hearted and generous” man who defied the limitations of having Cerebral Palsy to become a passionate

club worker who “touched so many people”. “Even though he was confined by his physical disabilities, he was very smart and was my eyes and ears,” Ms Sellin said. “He was my right hand man at the club. I personally have lots of fond memories of Pete and we all miss his presence. “He had a great sense of humour and a very quick wit. The stool at the end of the (football club) bar will be forever his.” During a 20-year association with Dayboro’s rugby league club, Mr Albrow also served as its groundsman, committee member, junior coach and was twice named Club Person of the Year. His colleague Michael Flanagan, one of an estimated 500 mourners who attended Mr Albrow’s funeral at St Francis Xavier Church in Dayboro last Friday, said he “always had a positive attitude and just couldn’t help enough”. Moreton Bay Region councillor Bob Millar (Division 11), who raised a condolence motion to a man who “lived and breathed football” in council last week, helped green light the naming of Pete Albrow Oval. Pete Albrow Oval sits beside Colin Thiele Field, the Dayboro Dingoes’ soccer pitch named after the late Storm Boy author, who lived in Dayboro in his later years before passing away in 2006. “Within hours of his (Pete’s) death, I knew that we had to pay tribute to him in a big way and it was in conjunction with the (Dayboro) War Memorial Association and Cr Bob Millar that the decision was made to remember him in this way,” Mrs Sellin said. In tribute, this season the jerseys of Dayboro’s senior team will bear the words ‘Pete 1964–2016’ on the chest area.

Solar solution from Highvale steaming ahead

$10,000 prize and priceless exposure for his company has Trevor Powell confident that his technology can help to “avoid leaving our children a legacy of a crippled environment.” Ten years ago Mr Powell began developing solar thermal technology that uses large mirrors to focus the heat of the sun to create steam to drive turbines and generate electricity. “Over that time we’ve invested some 15,000 hours to get to the point where we now have technology with the potential to make a major contribution to tackling the effects of climate change,” he said. An alternative to the use of fossil fuels for power generation, the technology could also be used for industrial processes such as desalination, manufacturing or agribusiness, he said. “We live in a country that has some of the richest solar resources on the planet, yet we’ve done pitifully little to capitalise on that great resource and continue to look instead toward unsustainable fossil fuels consumption to power us into the future,” Mr Powell explained.

The Highvale resident and his company Impact Building Systems were announced as the winner of the Innovation of the Year Award, the major $10,000 prize of the first Moreton Bay Innovation Awards, at a gala event at Caboolture earlier this month. “Winning the Moreton Bay Innovation Awards means a great deal to us, and in fact it’s already paid dividends, because it brings the work that we’re doing to the attention of the public,” Mr Powell said. “That means we start to have discuss-
ions with people and companies who may not have previously been aware of us, and we have a credible platform to start from.” Winners of $2500 Moreton Bay Innovation Awards prizes were Defenda Tag (Emerging Innovation), IC Fish Optical Safety Eyewear by New Eye Company (Established Innovation), Packer Leather and its kangaroo leather for shoe making (Moreton Bay Showcase Award), and the Gidget Retro Teardrop Camper made at Brendale (People’s Choice Award).

P
ean Teasdale pledges to “put the community front and centre” if elected as Mayor of Moreton Bay Regional Council on 19 March. “I’m standing up for our community to make a contribution so it becomes a better place,” the Mango Hill local said. “I have a strong and vested interest in ensuring it (Moreton Bay) is a great place for my family to grow up in, that our small business can be successful, and that it’s a safe place to live.” Mr Teasdale, pictured, said if elected his agenda would include regaining control of Unitywater, protecting and enhancing lifestyles “through practical consideration for the environment”, and providing more support for small business to create and maintain local jobs. He also wants to cut red tape that “unnecessarily burdens new homeowners” and restore “accountability, transparency and respect” to the council. As part of his fiscal vision for Moreton Bay, if elected he intends to take the pressure off the cost of living by keeping rates low, capping them to a maximum increase of CPI, while working towards curbing council debt. “Residents are concerned that council has lost its way when it comes to delivering the basis like roads, rubbish and value for rates,” Mr Teasdale, 39, said. “We need a council that can live within its means without putting pressure on the cost of living for residents’ owneroccupiers or tenants. “We need a council that can take
advantages of the opportunities that come with being one of the fastest growing regions in the country, whilst maintaining the lifestyle we all enjoy.” Mr Teasdale, who has a small business and legal background, believes “pretty significant growth in the region” will happen during the next four years. Citing his ability to “understand issues and develop effective solutions to challenges”, he envisages supporting emerging community organisations, filling gaps in public transport and improving the road network will be priorities. “We need a council that reflect community values when it comes to fair play, openness, honesty and transparency,” he said. “The community deserves a strong local voice to ensure we get our fair share and a council we can all be proud of. “The mayor sets the culture and standards within council. If you want to change the council you need to change the mayor.” Mr Teasdale has previously run for Moreton Bay Regional Council and was the LNP candidate for the Federal seat of Petrie in 2010, losing to Yvette D’Ath.
rotecting the environment is high on the agenda for the candidate for Moreton Bay Division 8, Sue
Laird. “Our local area, and the wider Moreton Bay region has a unique character that we need to preserve and nurture. I want to make that happen,” Mrs Laird said. “We have lost hundreds of acres of our natural heritage to property development, and protecting our remaining bushland is the highest priority for me. “If we do not adjust our thinking about the importance of the environment, we will lose much of our native wildlife forever. I did not move to this area just to live in an outer suburb of Brisbane.” The community volunteer and mother of four from Bray Park, who helps rehabilitate local bushland areas, said council decisions have “allowed the land to be cleared, which caused the damage in the first place”. “I think it is wholly appropriate for council to now invest their resources in helping to repair the damage that they have caused,” Mrs Laird said. As well as stopping the loss of our natural bushland areas, if elected Mrs Laird, pictured, would also strive to support local small business, improve development practices, and make public transport affordable for all commuters. She also wants Council to implement a program of Active Transport education in schools to highlight and promote the importance of walking, cycling, car pooling and public transport as accept-
able modes of transportation, emphasising that a healthy and active lifestyle “is good for both people and the environment”. If elected Mrs Laird, who worked for 15 years as part of the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, would also work closely with the State Government to increase the number and quality of cycle lanes, bike paths and footpaths throughout the community. Mrs Laird also intends to champion a “new approach to the council decisionmaking process”. She said her new decision framework for Moreton Bay Regional Council would involve evidence-based decision-making, better environment-development balance, increased transparency and wider community consultation. “I will encourage greater community consultation and transparency – especially with everyday people who have been left out of the decision-making process,” she said. “I will bring fresh ideas to Council, and support our schools, clubs and the wider community.”

Wellness on the Move
Poor posture? Feeling old? Joints aching? Back spasms? Chronic pain? Depression & fatigue?
Change is inevitable. As we age, we tend to expect reduced abilities, believing this to be “normal”. Rolfing Structural Integration is one intervention that challenges this belief, and can help us discover more ease and comfort in our bodies, even while aging. The goals of Rolfing are to release structural restrictions in connective tissue, and help find new ways of moving that support proper alignment. Often, a person receiving Rolfing is asked to gently move their body while the highly trained Rolfer works with the tissue to release and re-educate the body at the same time. Often, people find significant relief from chronic and recurring pain and discomfort. They also have a greater sense of freedom, or range of motion in their bodies. Many also note an improvement in balance and also in their awareness of their bodies, thereby reducing the prospect of further injury. Naturally, each individual’s experience of Rolfing is different, based on their history, physiology and motivations. To find out how you can benefit, visit www.WellnessontheMove. com.au.

REELTIME with Damian Staveley
Mel cooks up new recipe for festival laughs
M
Brooklyn Brooklyn is far more than the romance film it appears to be. Despite its 1950s setting, its themes are timeless. It is far from the melodramatic romance films audiences may now be accustomed to thanks to the likes of The Notebook. Directed by John Crowley, the film reaps its rewards from the subtle approach it takes to life’s big questions. Adapted superbly by Nick Hornby from the novel by Colm Toibin, Brooklyn centres on a young Irish woman, Eilis (Saoirse Ronan), for whom a benevolent priest, Father Flood (Jim Broadbent), has organised a job and accommodation in America. The constraints of her small town in Ireland, both romantically and monetarily, are enough to give her the motivation to move. Like a common cold, Eilis overcomes her homesickness with time. She settles into her boarding house, run by a caring but firm landlady (Julie Walters), and her job at a department store. Engaging though as it is watching the young migrant find her feet, the plot deepens when Eilis meets Tony (Emory Cohen) at a local dance. A young Italian plumber, Tony is charming and full of energy. He introduces her to his family, his New York, and as Eilis emerges from her shell the pair grow closer together. The culture clash is handled with brilliant humour, the most memorable example being when Eilis is being given lessons by her fellow boarders on how to eat spaghetti. However, after tragedy strikes at home, and Eilis returns to her former home, she is courted by another handsome young man, played by Domhnall Gleeson. The obvious questions arises: which life will she choose? The question is complex and the film, to its credit, does not seek to simplify matters at all. Eilis’ suitors are an embodiment of the city in which they live. Gleeson is safe, reassuring, comfortable, everything that Eilis remembers about Ireland. Tony, however, is outgoing, passionate, and electric. Adapting to the American way of life is suddenly something that Eilis has to seriously reconsider, as the way of life she had come to expect suddenly does not seem all that bad. Anyone who has undergone such radical change in their life can relate to this story, which is probably why it is so engaging to view. This is by far one of the best love stories to cross our screens in a while. Saoirse Ronan is sublime, portraying Eilis with vulnerability without foregoing her character’s resilience and determination. Watching her character grow is a pleasure. Despite being, at its core, a romance movie, Brooklyn feels like so much more. 9/10
el Buttle loves performing in her hometown, so much so that local audiences are the first to hear her new material at the Brisbane Comedy Festival each year. “I guess I’m always more confident performing on home soil… and you can throw in references about Stefan too,” she said. “You have got more artillery at your disposal, but also Brisbane crowds love a good laugh.” Buttle’s new show Quite Unsavoury, which she will premiere at the Brisbane Comedy Festival on 1 March, is “a typical stand-up show but it’s biographical”. “It’s about everything that I’ve found that’s a bit unsavoury – my mum uses that word,” she said. “If you talk about stuff like when you’ve really embarrassed yourself or you’ve been a bit of a fish out of water… I think that’s the most interesting (comedy).” Last year Buttle took on a new role as co-host of The Great Australian Bake Off TV program on the Lifestyle Food channel. “It took me until about episode three to realise that they weren’t going to fire me but it took me a while to really feel comfortable (in the presenter role),” she said. “It was a great experience getting to

work with someone, because comedy can be very lonely at times working solo. “It was really long days though. We would start filming at about 8 in the morning and sometimes we would keep going until about 8 at night.” The Great Australian Bake Off, which sees kitchen-savvy bakers’ tasty creations judged by culinary experts Maggie Beer and Matt Moran, was filmed in Sydney. But the girl from Cedar Creek didn’t find herself living the Sydney celebrity lifestyle, Buttle explaining that she was simply “too tired for one”.
Leftovers, rather than showbiz parties and nightclubs, dominated Buttle’s downtime between filming. “Normally the lunch and catering that they would supply for the crew and everyone, I would take my Tupperware container in, take some leftover lunch, get home at 8pm, eat and I’d be asleep by 8.30,” Buttle said. Mel Buttle performs Quite Unsavoury at the Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm from 1-6 March as part of the Brisbane Comedy Festival. Book tickets at briscomfest.com.

he jury in the murder trial of a young man accused of stabbing his father to death are locked in a room to consider their verdict. The majority are agreed but one man refuses to be swayed. Tempers fray, patience is tried and prejudices challenged. This is Twelve Angry Men, the classic drama about people forced to deal with others’ personalities and points of view while searching evidence for the truth. The play, famously adapted into an Academy Award-nominated film in 1957, is now being staged by Act 1 Theatre at Strathpine over three weeks starting next week. Like the jurors assigned to cast a verdict about the case, cast member Andrew Jervis knew little of the play’s subject matter before auditioning for his role in the show. “To be honest I had never even heard of Twelve Angry Men… so I looked into it to find out what it was about and it sounded like a really interesting story,” Jervis said. “I ended up watching… the movie and thought it was a really good movie and I thought it was something that I really
wanted to get into, this particular role.” In his first on-stage role in 22 years, the Eatons Hill resident has noticed a semblance between himself and his Twelve Angry Men character. “I really enjoy playing the character that I do. He’s a good character that is very logically driven and tries to keep emotions out of it (his decisions) altogether, just by looking at the facts and saying, ‘Logically,
this is how it should be’,” Jervis said. “I enjoy the idea of playing someone who thinks that way because I think I’m a little bit that way myself.” Directed by Patrick O’Callaghan, Twelve Angry Men is on at Act 1 Theatre, corner of Gympie Road and Hall Street, Strathpine for seven shows from 26 February. For tickets and show times phone 0458 579 269 or visit www.act1theatreinc.com.
Philip Lawrence, Gary Somerville and Errol Barnett are some of the Twelve Angry Men as presented in the new play by Act 1 Theatre.

Schools unveil student leaders
F
or students, a new school year means many things – new classes to take, new friends to make, and new knowledge to attain. It also means a fresh batch of student leaders have been selected to represent their school, both on their campus and out in the wider community, during the 11-month duration of the new academic year. In the coming weeks, The Westerner will be introducing to its readers the bright young students who have been selected to be the school captains, student leaders and ambassadors at our local primary and secondary schools – both big and small. This week we begin with the new school leaders of Mt Samson State School and Ferny Grove and Pine Rivers State High Schools.
Mt Samson State School’s student leaders for 2016 are Emily Greenfield, Mitchell Bowers, Georgia Glentworth and Ty Storken.
Ferny Grove State High School has welcomed its school captains for the new year: Sam Brock, Sarah Perkins, Rachel Sansome and Jack Hill.
Megan Jennings, Rachel Hooper, Max Miller, Georgia Tomsett, Malachi Baxter, AmberRose Fall and Jessica McAllister are Pine Rivers State High School’s student leaders.

tudents were schooled in what life as an elite footballer is like when three rugby league stars visited their school last week. Ryan Hoffman, Maddie Studdon and Rebecca Riley, in town for the NRL All Stars match played at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, stopped by Eatons Hill State School on Wednesday last week. The players stressed to the students the importance of having a healthy and active lifestyle, saying that a good night’s sleep and hydration was vital for top performance both in the school classroom and on the sporting field. “We train very, very hard and we prepare ourselves very, very well,” Hoffman, a New South Wales and Australian representative, told the students. “Due to our training and due to doing stuff like being hydrated and eating the right food and getting the right amount of sleep, we lessen the chance of accidents (injuries).” The visiting players also fielded questions from the students, ranging from their favourite places to play rugby league, what they enjoy most about the sport, how they motivate themselves to train. “Sometimes I think, ‘I don’t really want to do this,’ but then I think about it, that unfortunately, I won’t get to play rugby league
forever,” said Hoffman, who has played in the NRL for Melbourne Storm and New Zealand Warriors. “I would love to play rugby league until I’m 70-years-old but I can’t, so I don’t see training as something that I have to do; I see training as something that I get to do. “That’s why I really love waking up in the morning and doing what I do. “I just love being a part of a group of friends and when you win something like a premiership with someone, you’re always going to have that connection and that’s something really special.” Studdon, who has represented Australia in both rugby league and touch football, was asked whether she gets nervous before big games. “I have nerves, obviously, but once you get out there you do your job and you’re happy when you come off the field, no matter what the result is,” she said. “Winning a game is probably the best feeling ever, especially at a high level, but at any level you want to go out on the field and come out with a win.” Studdon also answered with “monkey” when asked the most peculiar question of the players’ one-hour visit to Eatons Hill: which animal she would like to care for if she was a zookeeper. Hoffman and Studdon lined up for World All Star teams in Brisbane on Saturday, while Riley played for the women’s Indigenous All Star side.

areas. Seeing my client’s reaction when they see the transformation and for myself seeing the finished job is rewarding. What advice would you give to someone who is considering entering your line of work? Get correct training, do your research in your area – this type of business is not a get-rich-quick business, it’s a lifestyle. If you didn’t work in your current job, what job would you like to do? Something working under water like welding, pipe laying or cleaning hulls of boats. I just love being under the water. How do you spend your spare time? Spending time with my beautiful wife and family, diving of course and cruising around on my VW trike. Give me a wave if you see us out and about! Bryce is right for Waratahs
H
e is recently returned from the ‘land of the rising sun’ and now one of Samford’s top sporting sons has Super Rugby success in his sights. Following a six-month stint in Japan, former Melbourne Rebels flyhalf Bryce Hegarty will play for Super Rugby rivals the New South Wales Waratahs this year. The Samford Valley product’s goals for 2016 are to “play as much football as I can” and cement a spot in the Waratahs’ starting line-up. “It’s obviously a very good club to be a part of, with a high quality group (of) players. I am very excited to knuckle down and focus on some footy,” Hegarty said. “I hope for this to be my best year yet and have certain goals I want to achieve.” Following three “thoroughly enjoyable” years in Melbourne, during which time his game improved and he “made some of my best mates”, Hegarty linked with Japan’s Toyota Shokki Shuttles club last year. Playing in Japan, where the style of play was “quite quick but not as physical”, allowed the 23-year-old to “freshen up and really enjoy my rugby again”. “I left the club (Melbourne Rebels) as I wasn’t happy throughout the 2015 season and was after a bit of a refresher before joining the Waratahs, and Japan for six months was the perfect fit,” Hegarty said. Hegarty says there is a “massive buzz” surrounding the Tokyo-based Sunwolves, one of two new Super Rugby teams this year, along with Argentine outfit the Jaguares. “The rugby culture in Japan is growing rapidly. Some games I played over there the stadiums were sold out,” Hegarty said.

“Support for the game is growing more and more each day. “At first it will be tough for them (the Sunwolves) but they will grow as a team each week and their rugby will improve immensely throughout the year. “I am really looking forward to playing against them later in the year.” Before then Hegarty hopes to play for New South Wales against Queensland at Allianz Stadium on 27 February – a “great way to start the Super Rugby season”. “I love playing against Queensland as it is my home state and I know most of the boys in their team very well,” he explains. “Then of course there is that obvious Queensland v NSW rivalry, however this time I’ll be on the other side, so I am really looking forward to experiencing that.” Despite shifting from the Rebels, one of the competition’s perennial strugglers, to 2014 champion side the Waratahs, Hegarty doesn’t feel extra pressure as he prepares to add to his 33 Super Rugby appearances. “There is always pressure to perform when you go out and play a game. It is no different from one team to another – you want to win and you do everything possible to achieve that,” he said. “It is a highly competitive competition with a lot of talented teams. I am really looking forward to being a part of a great team and hopefully 2016 can be a massive year for the team and myself.” In his first match in Waratahs colours, Hegarty scored a try and kicked two conversions in a 21-17 trial game win over ACT in Wagga Wagga on 6 February. His team then spent 10 days in New Zealand, for trials against the Chiefs and defending champions the Highlanders.

g n i t r o p s My life
Name: Jason Croston Club: South Pine Striders At what age did you start distance running? I started getting into fun runs in my 30s when I was training with Tom Law. I decided to stretch myself and run a half marathon when I was 39. Then I decided that I would try a full marathon and chose the Brisbane Marathon, which was three days after I turned 40. What is your biggest achievement in running? Completing my first marathon. It is a massive commitment on your time, body and family. It was tough physically and mentally. There was self-doubt and stepping into the unknown but it was one of the greatest feelings of my life to cross that finish line after running through 42.2km for the first time. What is your training programme? At the moment I run four or five times a week and cycle a couple of times a week to cross train. I generally run between 50 and 100km per week depending on the stage of my training. Which big upcoming events are you contesting? My big events this year are the Gold Coast Marathon in July and then New York Marathon in November. I will run in other events but they will generally be part of my training plan for each of these big events. Your advice for aspiring long distance runners. I would strongly suggest joining a club like South Pine Striders to get proper coaching and advice. Don’t expect to run like a Kenyan in week two. It’s a long game to build endurance so just take your time and enjoy the experience. The best things about your club. The professional coaches and the support of all of the club members. Running is an individual sport, but we are definitely part of a team. Who are your sporting idols and why? When I was young Mal Meninga and Allan Border were my idols. I loved their competitiveness and never-say-die attitude each time they set foot on the field. What are your goals for sport? For running I would like to run different races around the world if the opportunity arises. I would love to run the Vancouver Marathon one day in the city I was born in.

Bandits steal World Classic spot
D
avid Sutherland and Matt Timms had little time to celebrate guiding the Bandits Bandits to an elusive Australian Baseball League (ABL) title. Five days after pitching in to help the Bandits claim the Claxton Shield, the pair played for Australia against New Zealand, Philippines and South Africa in the World Baseball Classic qualifying tournament in Sydney last week. Australia won the tournament to advance to compete in the 12-team World Baseball Classic to be held in the USA next year. Sutherland, from the Pine Hills Lightning club at Bunya, last represented Australia in Taiwan a decade ago and admits he “never expected to be called up again”. “I thought my time had passed but we had such a good season at the Bandits… that my name came up (with Australian selectors), and I think I have my teammates to thank for that,” he said. Sutherland said earning Australian selection, coupled with Brisbane winning the ABL title by beating Adelaide Bite in early February, had “all been very surreal”. The first base ace said the Bandits’ first national title win since 1994, before the
WIN
ABL was disbanded in 1999 and restarted in 2010, was particularly sweet as the current team had never made the playoffs. “We’ve been used to the heartache of not making finals but everyone played out of their skins this season,” he said. “We had such a good team and our pitching line-up really put the batters in a position to be on top (of rival teams) all the time. We felt like if we didn’t get at least six runs every game we didn’t do well enough.” This season Sutherland, who spent four years playing with lower league American teams run by Major League franchise the Los Angeles Dodgers, also achieved the personal milestone of being the first player in the ABL to record 200 hits. “I think you look back on that stuff at the end of your career and think it’s really cool to be the first... or the best, but playing is all about (achieving) team goals,” he said. Timms, the Brisbane Bandits and Australian team relief pitcher, lives at Warner, while Ryan Battaglia, who grew up at Albany Creek, was the catcher for the ABL champion Bandits outfit. – Lee Oliver
