Some things change, most stay the same in Council Almost one month after the Moreton Bay Regional Council elections were held, we finally have a result. Winners of all of the 12 councillor positions have now been declared by the Electoral Commission of Queensland, with all seven incumbent local government representatives again being voted in by local adult residents. There are five new faces on Council – Matt Constance, Brooke Savige, Adam Hain, Darren Grimwade and Denise Sims. They will replace the five retirees – Brian Battersby, Bob Millar, Gary Parsons, Greg Chippendale and David Dwyer. Of the 12 newly elected councillors five of them – Mick Gillam, Adrian Raedel, Mike Charlton, James Houghton and Julie Greer – plus Mayor Allan Sutherland, have been in the Moreton Bay Regional Council from its inception in 2008, and they will now enter a third term as elected community representatives. One of those re-elected councillors, Mick Gillam, who oversees suburbs such as Strathpine, Bray Park and Joyner, only just beat his closest challenger by fewer than 400 votes. There were 1038 informal votes in the Division. – Lee Oliver, Editor

Westerner Flashback The

In 2016, The Westerner community newspaper celebrates its 20th birthday: two decades of informing and entertaining the residents of Pine Rivers, and later the Moreton Bay Region. To celebrate the milestone, this year we are going back through the archives to revisit some of the biggest and most entertaining stories printed over the past 20 years.

John Alexander is frustrated at not being able to upgrade the electricity supply to his Ocean View eatery.

Business electricity issues spark power struggle By Lee Oliver

A

n Ocean View business owner says a vision to expand his enterprise into a tourist destination is being thwarted by electricity supplier Energex. John Alexander runs Pit Stop Café and plans to develop the Mt Mee Road property as an adventure park with eco-cabins and also add a function centre. However, plans to expand his business and create more jobs have hit a snag. Since the middle of 2015, Mr Alexander has sought to have three-phase electricity supplied to his property. Currently single-phase electricity powers both the Pit Stop Café and an adjacent house on the property. “At least four or five times a weekend our power trips,” Mr Alexander said. “At least four times in the last eight months our power use has blown the fuse on the transformer pole… and Energex had to send out two crews so that they could change the blown fuse. “It seems logical... to put another source of power there with its own meter but it’s just in the (Energex) rule book that it’s not allowed, so it can’t happen.” As the closest high voltage supply is

1.04km from the property, Energex says Mr Alexander would need to make a financial “contribution” to get increased electricity network capacity. In January, Energex advised it would likely cost Mr Alexander between $60,000 and $71,000 to upgrade the existing electricity transformer and supply threephase power to his premises. Another possible option could be to contribute around $20,000 for Energex to supply a second point of electricity supply to the property, which Energex does not permit on non-urban domestic properties. That is despite Moreton Bay Regional Council granting a Material Change of Use reclassification of Mr Alexander’s land from rural-residential to a food service site. An upfront fee of $4288 would need to be paid to Energex to carry out an investigation of the proposed electricity service upgrades. Mr Alexander believes it is ironic that while governments promote investment in tourism and creating employment, “the government organisation supplying electricity are making it completely prohibitive”. THIS WEEK IN 1998: Long-serving Pine Rivers Shire councillor Brian Burke celebrated 25 years in local government at the end of March 1998. Mr Burke, who lived at Yugar from 1967, was elected to council in 1973 to oversee an area stretching from Mt Nebo to Mt Pleasant. Described as a colourful figure, he was credited with formulating plans to help retain the village feel of Samford as well as championing arts, music and community enterprises in the district. He is pictured cutting a celebratory cake with fellow Pine Rivers councillors including Mike Charlton and Mick Gillam, current Moreton Bay Region councillors. Brian Burke passed away in July 2002, 18 months after his retirement, and was buried at Samsonvale cemetery. Brian Burke Reserve at Samford Valley is named after him.

new-look Moreton Bay Regional Council is expected to be sworn in next week, with five new faces amongst the councillor ranks. The new councillors are Brooke Savige, Adam Hain, Denise Sims, Matt Constance and Darren Grimwade. Adrian Raedel, Mick Gillam, Mike Charlton, Peter Flannery, Koliana Winchester, Julie Greer and James Houghton return. Mr Gillam, the incumbent councillor who came closest to losing his job after beating Chris Kelly by only 391 votes, urged residents to be patient as the new councillors found their feet in local government. “It will be a big challenge with five new people elected; half the council has changed due to retirements,” he said. “It will probably take a little time for them to find out what council is all about. “When I was first elected in 1994 it took me about a year to get my head around how council worked.” Matt Constance, the newly elected councillor for Division 10, covering Bunya, Draper and the Hills District, said he

appreciated the “support and trust placed in me to represent our local community and great region”. “I’m looking forward to working with our new council and getting on with the business of growing our region, protecting our lifestyle and building stronger communities,” Mr Constance said. New Division 11 councillor Darren Grimwade, who will oversee areas such as Samford, Mt Samson, Dayboro and Mt Glorious, is “very humbled” to be elected. “I’m looking forward to... ensuring that our large division has a strong voice in Council and that our region gets its fair share of funding for important infrastructure and services,” Mr Grimwade said. Incumbent Allan Sutherland was elected as Moreton Bay Mayor for a third term. “People crave stability I think, as long as it is good stability,” Mr Gillam said. “The vast bulk of the region saw that the Mayor has a vision for the region. “Some people might not like the man but they realise he has the region at heart… like we (councillors) all do.”

What I enjoy most about caravanning… Meeting up with other club members and visiting small country towns away from the main highways. Memories of my first caravan holiday… When I was a child. The best things about the True Blue Caravan Club… We are a small club and everyone joins in all activities. My favourite caravan trip destinations, and why… Bribie Island (close to home), Gin Gin showgrounds (easy walk to town), Esk Caravan Park (first-class facilities – best we’ve stayed in!) If I could holiday anywhere I would… travel around Australia with the caravan. If I wrote an autobiography it would be called… My Life. In ten years time I hope to be… travelling.

The True Blue Caravan Club holds caravan rallies starting on the third Wednesday of each month. The next outing is to Woodgate Beach, north of Hervey Bay, departing 20 April. For more information phone Carol on 3882 3227 or Lesley on 3264 5053.

A conversation between Marilyn Oliver of Camp Mountain and breast cancer survivor Robin Wright of Closeburn late last year inspired the formation of the Knitted Pop-Ins group. Electricity issues spark power struggle “Energex must be one of the only companies in the world where a customer is asked to provide the capital investment for that company to supply them a service,” Mr Alexander wrote in an email to Pine Rivers MP Nikki Boyd, who has been liasing with Energex on the issue. “When you go to Woolworths and buy milk you don’t pay Woolworths to own a cow so that you can buy the milk off it.” Over the past six years Mr Alexander has invested $350,000 in upgrading his 75-acre property and plans to spend another $70,000 on business projects at the site this year. 1 Toss potatoes with olive oil on first prepared tray and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 30 minutes until golden and crispy. Turn once during cooking.

ROAST POTATO SALAD 800g red jacket or agria potatoes, scrubbed (leave skin on) and diced 3–4cm 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 bunches asparagus spears (about 24 spears), ends trimmed, cut into 4cm lengths 2 courgettes, ends trimmed and sliced 1cm on an angle 1 punnet cherry tomatoes, cut in half 1 /4 cup chopped mint leaves 1 /2 red onion, finely diced 100g feta cheese, crumbled HERB-CRUSTED LAMB 600g lamb loin or lamb rump steaks (at room temperature) 2 tablespoons finely chopped rosemary leaves 2 tablespoons finely chopped mint leaves 1 cup panko breadcrumbs 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 teaspoons Dijon mustard

3 When potatoes have about 10 minutes of cooking time remaining, place lamb in oven (on rack above potatoes) and toss asparagus and courgettes through potatoes. Cook vegetables and lamb for about 8 minutes for medium rare (depending on thickness) or until cooked to your liking. Set lamb aside, loosely covered with foil, to rest for 5 minutes. 4 Add tomatoes, mint, onion and feta to tray with potatoes and vegetables and toss to combine. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and a little red wine vinegar then season to taste with salt and pepper. Slice lamb thickly. TO SERVE divide lamb and salad between plates. If some of the crust falls off the lamb, just sprinkle it back on before serving.

2 While potatoes are cooking, prepare lamb. Pat lamb dry with paper towels and season with salt. Heat a drizzle of oil in a large frypan on high heat and sear lamb for 1 minute each side until just brown (it will finish cooking in the oven). Place on second prepared tray. Mix herbs with breadcrumbs and olive oil in a small bowl. Spread mustard on top of each piece of lamb. Sprinkle crust mixture on top and press gently but firmly to adhere.

o you dream of a beautiful, quiet, cozy place where you can relax at the end of the day? How about a secluded setting with a small bench, and maybe a storage box, where you can hide a few goodies – a book, some magazines, your knitting work, or needle point project – just for you? Or maybe you’d rather enjoy a lively place where the entire family can join in the fun? You could build a tree house for the little ones, decorate your patio with some comfortable furniture, and maybe even install a nice pool, so you can cool off on the hot summer days. If you read many magazines or watch TV you probably see great backyards all the time. It can make you envious if your own backyard is less than desirable. Thankfully,

there are ways to do backyard makeovers to take your yard from dull to beautiful. The first thing you need to do is assess your yard. If there is anything unsightly like discarded items that you don’t use anymore it’s time to get rid of them. Having things that aren’t necessary in your yard can make it look cluttered. Once you’ve gotten rid of the undesirables you can start to plan your yard makeover. If you know of a yard you’d love to take ideas from, take a look and start writing them down. It doesn’t matter if this ideal yard is in your own neighbourhood or in print somewhere. Now, you certainly don’t want your makeover to just be a complete copy of that backyard. You will need to find ways to put your own spin on it. For example, if you

enjoy having friends over you will want to have a barbeque area. When your list of makeover changes you want to make is complete you can start to take action on your yard. If you have the money you might want to invest in getting a professional involved. If you’d rather not pay someone else you can improve the look of your yard all on your own. One of the first things you’ll want to do is take care of the landscaping. Planting great looking trees and shrubs can instantly improve the look of your yard. If you’d like a garden, plant things that are in season and be prepared to change what you plant accordingly. Once the landscaping is done you can start to think about accessories and decorations. These are really the things

that make your backyard makeover unique. There are picnic tables, benches, yard décor and other things you can add. If you have children you will also want to make sure that your yard is fun as well as functional. You might invest in something as large as a swimming pool or as simple as a volleyball net. Consider the needs of your family and what they enjoy doing. Doing backyard makeovers can be a lot of fun for you. Your yard will turn a lot of heads with its new look that is made to rival what people see on TV. Put your personality and desires into it and it will be so great that you’ll want to spend all your time out there. – Backyard Enthusiast, iSnare

Seleen heads to Urban Country on career high

A My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 In 2002, I cautiously rented the DVD of Hollywood rom-com My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I was pleasantly surprised by what turned out to be an above average, amusing and often well written comedy with very likeable lead characters. The chemistry between stars Nia Vardalos and John Corbett was undeniable, and the culture clash between their characters made the movie work. Fourteen years later Vardalos and her famous creation, the Portokalos family, are back. While the decade-and-a-half wait between story one and story two in the world of Greek Wedding has served the plotline fairly well, for the fans the wait has not been totally worth it. After the first film followed their courtship and marriage, Toula (Vardalos) and Ian (Corbett) are still married, with a teenaged daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris). With Paris considering her college options, Toula and Ian are anxious about having an empty nest at home. But with Toula’s extended Greek-American family living so close by, there’s no such thing as a quiet household. The better storyline centres around the revelation that Toula’s parents Gus (Michael Constantine) and Maria Portokalos (Lainie Kazan) aren’t legally married, quite ironic given their insistence that their daughter and granddaughter be wed, at the expense of chasing their own dreams. So begins a struggle between the senior Portokalos couple, with Toula and a multitude of aunts and uncles (the most endearing being Andrea Martin’s Aunt Voula) acting as family mediators and sounding boards for Portokalos problems.

landmark year in the career of Brisbane country musician Seleen McAlister will continue with an appearance at the upcoming Urban Country Music Festival at Caboolture. In January, McAlister was nominated for a Golden Guitar Award for best new Australian country music act with the title tune off her new album She’s Getting Stronger, a song of “empowerment and positivity” that has “resonated with a lot of people”. “There’s a lot of songs about women, for women… and in country music we’ve got our standard sad songs,” McAlister said. “I really wanted to write a song that was very much about empowering women and about changing their situation – maybe a bad relationship or a situation they felt they couldn’t change. “It’s been very well received and spent a record almost 31 weeks on the top 40 country charts, which was amazing. It was a song that really kind of facilitated the Golden Guitar nomination and it’s a song that I perform regularly and it’s a song that people always want to hear.” Calling her music “contemporary country” akin to the style of Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill and Trisha Yearwood, the Bracken Ridge resident was reared on a variety of musical genres. “My mum and dad were both born in Ayr in far north Queensland and my dad was a rodeo rider and a horseman and ringer,” McAlister said. “I grew up with country music in the background but my mum was a big fan of Peter Allen and Engelbert Humperdinck and Frank Sinatra, so I had a very large crossreference and eclectic upbringing on different music.” McAlister is expecting this year’s Urban Country Music Festival, running from 29 April to 1 May and featuring Troy Cassar-Daley, Adam Harvey, Sara Storer and James Blundell, to be one of the biggest to date.

If the intention of Vardalos and director Kirk Jones was to have their audience – and not just Toula, Ian and Paris – feeling smothered by the Portokalos relatives to the point of irritation, then they succeeded. However, kudos must go to Vardalos for not rush-releasing a cash grab Greek Wedding sequel straight after the hit original – although sadly most of her characters haven’t evolved much over time. 6/10

“I love doing this one because it’s in my backyard and it’s a really, really great festival and I’m sure it will be bigger and better this year,” McAlister said. “Obviously, last year we had the huge big storm that unfortunately didn’t let it (the festival) go on.” McAlister loves the mix of styles available to punters attending country music festivals. “The thing with country music is there’s a lot of different genres… and when it comes to a festival that’s the most amazing thing,” she said. “A patron goes to a festival and they get to see this broad range of all different styles. “They may be a fan of the classic country, the real balladeers like Adam Harvey or Bill Chambers who have that older style… but festivals also bring all the new talent through who are trying new things. “Country music is extremely popular in Caboolture and it (the Urban Country Music Festival) brings it a bit closer to Brisbane, which is exciting.” Seleen McAlister will perform at the Urban Blaze show, the Urban Country Music Festival’s closing night concert, on 1 May.

Attilla has music world on his strings Violin master Attilla Sautov will perform the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and Niccolò Paganini at Mt Mee.

The main reason to watch this film is Constantine’s performance. As the stubborn family patriarch he is the star of the show, getting the most laughs for his assertions that everything in life originated in Greece, as well as audience empathy as he realises his marriage may be fracturing and that he has taken his wife for granted. Vardalos and Corbett are more bit-players this time around. Pretty much all of the supporting cast of the original film is back and while it is a pleasure to see Aussies Gia Carides and Louis Mandylor on the big screen again, featuring as members of the extended Portokalos family, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 really is a case of too many characters spoiling the party. Unfortunately, too many of these supporting characters are just annoying.

Seleen McAlister will perform at the Urban Country Music Festival.

L

auded violin master Attilla Sautov is bringing the sounds of classical music masters Bach and Paganini to Mt Mee. The Redcliffe-based musician has returned from a tour of Italy to present a uniquely intimate solo concert, which will showcase the versatility of the violin in the hands of a maestro. In stark contrast to his rock-style classical concert staged at Mt Mee 18 months ago, Sautov’s latest visit to the mountain will see him demonstrate his mastery of unaccompanied solo works. The intimate solo recital at the Mountain Top Community Church on 30 April will see him perform four works by Johann Sebastian Bach and five pieces from Niccolò Paganini.

The program will include Bach’s Chaconne (from Partita No. 2 in D Minor), a structurally and emotionally powerful piece, as well as three of Paganini’s Caprices. Sautov will also perform his own arrangement of Paganiniana, variations on the themes of Paganini by Nathan Milstein. It sees the violinist show his mastery of left hand pizzicato, ricochet arpeggios, double and triple stops, parallel octaves and tenths and fast scales, creating the illusion of hearing more than one instrument. Sautov is well versed in performing the works of 18th century composers Bach and Paganini. The Uzbekistan-born child prodigy played his first concertos by Bach, his favourite composer, at the age of six before his music skills led him to perform in around 40 countries around the world. Attilla Sautov’s solo recital of the works of Bach and Paganini is on at the Mountain Top Community Church, 42 Settlement Road, Mt Mee on 30 April at 2pm. Ticket prices range from $10 to $30, with children free. Tickets are available from Birches Restaurant at Mt Mee, at the door or via www.attillasautov.com.

Killer Queen to slay Samford audience

A rock band that will take you away to Wembley in your local venue.” That’s how Andrew Edwards describes The Killer Queen Experience, the world-renowned tribute show that honours British rock super group Queen. Edwards fills the role of legendary Queen guitarist Brian May in the group, with Freddie Mercury doppelganger John Blunt portraying the enigmatic singer. While Mercury was Queen’s star and one of rock music’s most mercurial frontmen, Edwards argues May was just as important to the huge success of the band in the 1970s and 1980s. “Brian May is brains and technique,” Edwards said. “Listen to the first four Queen albums, all of that harmonised guitar tracking. “I read somewhere that he got it from Cream’s intro to White Room and took the concept to Jupiter and back, playing a homebuilt guitar made by his father and himself from the base of an English fireplace and using a sixpence. I don’t know of any other astrophysicist rockers out there?” Edwards says Queen, whose gig at Wembley Stadium in 1985 was named the best rock show of all time by English music critics, has a catalogue of classic tunes because the band’s songwriting was “so diverse in genre and uniquely Queen”. “I like to play all the songs. Some songs are technically challenging where others are simple cycles with strong messages that pull you in, like Under Pressure,” Edwards explains. “Audiences like big sing-a-longs like I Want to Break Free, Somebody to Love, We Are The Champions. “I do the best I can to make people have a good time and

experience a rocking show. I think John Blunt’s uncanny resemblance to Freddie plays with their frontal lobes.” Since forming in 2003, The Killer Queen Experience has headlined the Skaanevik Blues Festival in Norway, sharing the stage with Thin Lizzy, Twisted Sister, Foreigner and Journey and performing in front of more than 10,000 fans. The group has also performed in Singapore, New Zealand, India and Papua New Guinea, and Edwards recalled one of his first “mind blowing” tours with the act. “(I) had an interesting experience in India customs being mistaken for a diamond store heist gang (member) that pulled a job the arvo we flew out,” he said. “It was like something out of Spinal Tap. Character building material, they say!” The Killer Queen Experience will perform at the Samford Valley Hotel on 30 April.

CORRECTION

Logie Awards The Westerner’s story about Samford actor Melina Vidler in the 31 March edition stated that the TV Week Logie Awards would be held on 3 April. This is incorrect. The final award nominees were announced on 3 April. The TV Week Logie Awards will be held on 8 May.

Joan Gerry has been officially recognised for her dedication to Dayboro Community Art Gallery.

Dayboro Community Art Gallery President Bruce Mercer said Mrs Gerry was a dedicated member who is “willing to help whenever help is needed”. “She is a good working member who started off with the first concept of the gallery,” Mr Mercer said. Mrs Gerry’s roles with the gallery over the past two decades have included treasurer, president and the gallery coordinator, charged with tasks such as arranging and hanging gallery displays. “It (the gallery) is a good community thing and I think it’s good for Dayboro because there’s not an awful lot in the

town for the visitors who like to come through,” she said. “People are usually pleasantly surprised when they come into the gallery… pleasantly surprised by the quality of work and the different types of work.” Mrs Gerry is one of only three Life Members of the Dayboro Community Art Gallery, the others being Beryl Marshall and Lillian Tebesceff. The gallery, which is operated by member artists, is on the corner of William Street and Mt Mee Road at Dayboro, open 10am to 3pm daily. Phone 3425 2000 or visit www.gallery.dayboro.info.

Are you living in Diabetes-ville?

I

f all the people in Queensland with diabetes lived in the one place, it would be the third largest city in the state. Diabetes Queensland has released data showing that nearly 315,000 residents have type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy. The fictitious town, dubbed ‘Diabetesville’, includes 93,000 residents who have type 2 diabetes but don’t know it yet. “Diabetes-ville has nearly 315,000 residents, and is one of the fastest growing cities in the Sunshine State,” Michelle Trute from Diabetes Queensland said. “This is a city bigger than the Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Cairns or Toowoomba, and it’s growing at a rate of about 60 new arrivals every day. “With a population greater than Townsville and Toowoomba combined, diabetes and its complications occupy 16 per cent of Queensland’s available hospital beds.” It is expected that diabetes will replace heart disease as the major burden on Australia’s health system by next year. Ms Trute said there are over 192,000 people in Queensland with type 2 diabetes, an “insidious condition” often caused by

poor diet and lifestyle choices that “should concern us all”. “Diabetes… is identified by the ever-present risk of medical complications and consequences, from kidney and heart disease to blindness and amputation,” she said. “The safe ground, when it comes to preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes, means healthy eating (and) adopting an active lifestyle. Five vegetables and two fruit a day, plus regular exercise, is good practice for everyone.” The number of Queensland children with type 2 diabetes jumped by more than 70 per cent over the past four years due to genetic predisposition, weight gain and inactivity. In 60 per cent of cases type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed with an active lifestyle and healthy eating, with exercising 30 minutes a day able to halve a person’s risk of developing the condition. To assess your risk of type 2 diabetes go to www.diabetesqld.org.au. There are just under 21,900 people in Queensland with type 1 diabetes, which cannot be prevented.

WIN

We live in a world where we never stop eating and consume the worst kinds of food, resulting in extreme numbers of sick people suffering a variety of health issues. ‘Eat Less, Live Long’ is a guide for people who are willing to change and want to get healthy, but don’t know how. Author Jason Shon Bennett shares his years of personal experience and extensive research into the world’s healthiest diets, the medicinal properties of foods, and the practice of regular fasting. Through applying these learnings in his own life, Jason transformed his health and hasn’t been sick for over 20 years. The Westerner has one Jason Shon Bennett prize including copies of ‘Eat Less, Live Long’ (RRP $29.99) and ‘My 20 Golden Rules’ (RRP $39.99) to give away. For your chance to win send your name and contact details to Body Competition, PO Box 5189, Brendale 4500, or email lee@ thewesterner.com.au, Subject: Body Competition. Entries close 25 April.

he has shared the court with some of the world’s top players, including Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Milos Raonic, Victoria Azarenka, Grigor Dimitrov and Lleyton Hewitt. When it comes to watching world-class tennis, Kelsey Hartnett has the best seat in the house. The Closeburn resident served as a ‘ball-kid’ at this year’s Australian Open in Melbourne as well as at the last three Brisbane International tournaments. This weekend the 15-year-old will be courtside at the Queensland Tennis Centre in Brisbane when Australia faces the USA in the women’s Fed Cup tournament for the first time since 1985. “Ball-kids need to be able to concentrate and stay concentrating – and still – for any length of time,” Kelsey explained. “You need to understand the game of tennis so you know when to get the balls to the other end and who needs them next. “You need to be fast and be able to perform the skills like rolling the balls from one ball-kid to another quickly and with precision. “The most difficult part is probably the concentration and keeping track of where the game is up to so you don’t make mistakes.” Through tennis Kelsey has made friends www.thewesterner.com.au

from around Australia as well as visiting ball-kids from Singapore, France, Korea and China. Meeting sporting superstars is pretty cool too. “The best part of a major tournament is the atmosphere and the fact that you get to be close to the players, including behind the scenes where Roger Federer might walk past and say, ‘Good morning’ to you,” Kelsey said. For this weekend’s Fed Cup World Group Playoffs clash with the USA, Australia will be represented by Casey Dellacqua, Arina Rodionova, US Open and French Open champion Samantha Stosur, and Hopman Cup winner and Australian Open quarterfinalist Daria Gavrilova. The world’s number 22 singles player, Madison Keys, will represent the USA alongside CoCo Vandeweghe, Christina McHale and world number three doubles player Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Since 1963, Australia has won 125 of its 175 Fed Cup ties, with the United States winning 145 of 181. Kelsey believes strong home crowd support will “help all the Aussies bring home victory” when the best-of-five match series is played on an outdoor clay court in Pat Rafter Arena at the Queensland Tennis Centre from 16-17 April. – Lee Oliver

ome 18 months ago, the Samford District Bowls Club converted its grass greens into two artificial greens, covered by shade cloth. The shade cloth can be pulled over the greens on a sunny day, helping to reduce the temperature on the greens considerably. Because of this, the lawn bowls club is finding many of its older bowlers are continuing to play, as they are not exposed to the strong sunlight and UV. Recently the club has had some success in open competitions – one team recently won the Alex Gow Competition, and another team made the semi-finals of the Tom’s Confectionery competition. The club has started a three-way competition between Samford, Dayboro and Samford’s sister club, Woodford. On the first day Samford was successful, winning on all four rinks.

Samford District Bowls Club also runs its social Village Bowls competition twice a year for people who have never bowled before. The recent competition, held on Thursday evenings over a period of eight weeks, was won by a team called ‘The Battlers’. This team has participated in the event since the competition started some 11 years ago. The next round of the Village Bowls competition will commence on October 12. Phone Desley Broad on 3289 4786. Samford District Bowls Club is available for bowls on Tuesdays (mornings: U3A, afternoons: Mufti Bowls), Wednesday mornings (Ladies Day) and Saturday afternoons (Mens Day). The clubhouse is available for hire for functions. Phone Club Secretary Desley Hawkins on 3261 1559 or email info@ samfordbowls.com.au.
