June is the month for the anniversaries of two local community institutions. This weekend the Dayboro Ambulance Service, which was established as Dayboro Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade back in June 1916, celebrates 100 years with a special open day. Not only does the Dayboro Ambulance Service turn 100 this week, the first ambulance station premises in Dayboro opened in this month in 1922. Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade was disbanded to form the Queensland Ambulance Service in this month in 1991. Read about the 100-year history of the Dayboro Ambulance Service on page 6. Another community hub – and a more pleasant experience for visitors – Arana Hills Library is celebrating 40 years. Author and former paramedic Katherine Howell met literary fans to discuss her Ella Marconi crime series at the library on Monday. The Friends of Arana Hills Library will host a celebratory wine and cheese evening on 15 June from 6.30pm. Book your place at the event on 3351 3401. – Lee Oliver, Editor

Council budgeting for region’s future By Lee Oliver
M
ore than $2 million for a new soccer clubhouse at Samford and a $6.8 million upgrade of Bunya Road at Draper are some of the big local spends announced in Moreton Bay Regional Council’s 2016-17 Budget. The Budget includes around $32 million for roadworks, $8 million for sports facility upgrades and $2 million for parks improvements around The Westerner area – in Divisions 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. It includes $2 million for the next stage of a new AFL precinct at the South Pine Sports Complex at Brendale and $2.185 million for the construction of a new clubhouse at Samford Rangers Football Club. Council allocated $1 million for a new baseball facility at James Drysdale Reserve at Bunya and will upgrade carparks at Les Hughes Sports Complex, Bray Park. Over $2 million will be shared on pools at Ferny Hills ($1.225 million), Lawnton ($1 million) and Dayboro ($25,000). Major road project spending includes $4 million to upgrade Old North Road, from South Pine Road to Kremzow Road at Warner, duplicating the road to four lanes with new lighting, paths and cycle lanes. An upgrade of the Kremzow and Leitchs Roads intersection at Brendale is funded at $3.25 million, with a $980,000 upgrade of Gordon Road, Ferny Hills and funds to design a Jinker Track intersection upgrade at Bunya also allocated. Other funded road projects include $2.2 million for the intersection of Patricks Road and Dawson Parade at Arana Hills, $200,000 for Mt Nebo Road at Jollys
Lookout, and a $6.8 million upgrade of Bunya Road at Draper. The Budget will commit $3.36 million towards a new bridge on Bunya Road across South Pine River, replacing the existing bridge with a two-lane, pre-stressed concrete bridge. Council has allocated $800,000 for the construction of a new carpark and facilities at the Bunya Waste Management facility. Dayboro, Mt Nebo and Samford waste transfer stations will be upgraded, while $40,000 will go towards constructing a detention basin at Dayboro Showgrounds. Council will allocate $40,000 for Dawson Creek and South Pine River at Mt Nebo, and $10,000 towards the rehabilitation of Harold Brown Park at Wights Mountain. Investment will be made to revegetate Brian Burke Reserve at Samford Valley as a koala nature refuge. Council will also invest $860,000 in a new adventure playground, pathway and waterway work at Pine Rivers Park at Strathpine, and replace the timber bridge at Hayward Avenue Park in Cashmere. The arts will benefit with $500,000 to go towards Woodfordia, the home of the Woodford Folk Festival, and $350,000 earmarked for a new Dayboro Art Gallery to replace the existing building. Council has also committed $380,000 towards the refurbishment of buildings at the former Samford CSIRO research station, for the Samford Commons project. Other council Budget allocations include $270,000 to upgrade the Albany Creek Community Centre, $105,000 for Pendicup Place Community Centre at Warner, and $75,000 to upgrade the Mt Mee Lookout.
Westerner Flashback The
In 2016, The Westerner community newspaper celebrates its 20th birthday: two decades of informing and entertaining the residents of Pine Rivers, and later the Moreton Bay Region. To celebrate the milestone, this year we are going back through the archives to revisit some of the biggest and most entertaining stories printed over the past 20 years. THIS WEEK IN 2005: With the Dayboro Rodeo to return to the Dayboro Showgrounds on 19 June, we take a look back at one young local cowboy whose rodeo skills took him overseas to compete. In 2005, Dayboro teenager Joel Wallace was preparing to realise his sporting dream of competing in bull riding in the home of rodeo – the USA. The then 18-year-old represented the Australian high school rodeo team in Gillette, Wyoming in July that year, competing against teams from 39 US states and five Canadian provinces. These days, Joel lives in Dayboro and is still involved in the sport but on the other side of the arena fence, supplying animal stock for rodeo events. Back in 1973 the Dayboro Rodeo was national news, with the front page photo of The Australian newspaper being an image of 18-year-old Stafford woman Gayle Butterworth riding a Brahman bull at the event.

Dayboro men share town’s top award Robyn Currell Camp Mountain Robyn is an organiser of the Samford Show Ball, which will return to the Samford Showgrounds for the first time in more than a decade in July.
The last Samford Show Ball… I believe was held in 2005. It was such an iconic event for Samford and in its heyday attracted up to 700 guests. Great fun. Highlights of this year’s ball… Great food, great music and good people. Why people should get involved in community events like the Samford Show Ball… It has always been a big part of fundraising for our annual show. Most of the work done at the showgrounds was provided by locals working together on a voluntary basis. Projects like this help to create a good community spirit. The first ball I attended… was in the late 1980s. At that time the pavilion was not completed and tarps were used to extend the roofline. This was generally successful although I remember one rainy ball when we needed gumboots or plastic bags over our shoes. My fondest memories of attending the ball… were when, although there was a crowd in excess of 600 people, we seemed to know most of them and everyone had a wonderful time. I guess it was a bit like a country ball. If I could attend any ball from movies or fairy tales… it would have to be a Mad Hatters Ball. What fun! A song that always gets me on the dance floor… I think the song that gets most people up dancing is Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. The best piece of advice I have been given… was given to me by my motherin-law. When my babies were born she told me to trust my instincts in rearing them. It seems to have worked.
The Samford Show Ball, featuring a three-course meal and live music, is on at the Samford Showgrounds at Highvale on 2 July. Tickets cost $95 with proceeds supporting the Samford Show Society. For bookings phone 0408 067 081.
“
To get Resident of the Year was a shock because when we first moved here we were told you had to be here 35 years before you’re considered local.” So says Errol Brough, the Dayboro bus driver and former newsagency owner who moved to the town 31 years ago. Mr Brough said it was “one hell of a surprise” to be named Dayboro Resident of the Year at an awards ceremony at the Dayboro Day festival on 29 May. “My wife and family knew all about but I didn’t until we were actually down there for the presentation,” he said. For the past 26 years, Mr Brough has been a pivotal member of the Dayboro Show Society, including 10 years as its president and 11 years as vice-president. “For volunteers the wages are pretty ordinary, there’s no holiday pay and no sick pay,” Mr Brough said. “The only benefit you get is at the end… when everyone had a great time and it ran to the way you planned it.
“We all do volunteer labour and to be rewarded for that is quite exciting.” Mr Brough is also a founding member of the Dayboro Trail Riders club and treaded the boards Dayboro Players theatre. For the third time in four years, the Dayboro Resident of the Year award was shared by two winners. Mark Rushton was the joint winner of the accolade, for which he had also been nominated the two previous years. He has served his community by volunteering at Dayboro Rodeo, Dayboro Show and Dayboro Day events and organised and managed Clean Up Australia events in the district for more than ten years. Mr Rushton was a member of Apex Club of Dayboro for 15 years until its closure in 2013, serving as president, secretary
and treasurer, and instigated a program to check and replace fire alarm batteries in elderly residents’ homes. Amelia Rushton, accepting the award on behalf of her absent father, said his “compassion and willingness to assist others” was exemplified during the 2011 floods in Dayboro. “After hearing news of locals and businesses in need, Mark immediately headed for town and was prepared to assist wherever he could,” she said. “After spending the day... transporting rubbish and damaged goods he then spent the afternoon draining and clearing a flooding home.” Brent Steffensen was named Dayboro Young Resident of the Year for his work as the town’s go-to man for providing audio services for local community events. He is the projectionist for Dayboro Community Movies, does sound and lighting for ANZAC Day ceremonies and local theatre shows and gives voluntary technology support at Dayboro’s school. The Rendezvous at Dayboro café was named Dayboro’s Business of the Year.

died”. The Mt Samson permaculture practitioner has been appointed as the first farmer of Millen Farm, a not-for-profit community urban farm at the Samford Commons precinct in Samford Valley. He will set up the farm over the coming months, in accordance with the philosophies of sustainable and ecologically sound farming practices. “We’re going to be an organic farm based on permaculture principles but using all the best practices that are around today,” Mr Heideman said. “We’re taking our lead from the Canadian organic growers, people like JeanMartin Fortier, and also Curtis Stone, and we also look at the godfather of the market garden, which is Eliot Coleman.” Millen Farm will grow a variety of fruit, perennial-style plants and “a rotation of seasonal vegetables”. Mr Heideman envisages the farm will be a “community meeting ground around gardens” that would represent a “subtropical way of thinking about farming”. “Being in such a prominent place just out of Samford (Village) people will drive past and see a farm up and running, the way it was a long time ago although we’ll be using

a lot of different techniques,” he said. “People can come out and farm their own little plot and grow whatever they want, with the backdrop of a real working farm. “They’ll be given the opportunity to come and volunteer on the farm, gaining experience on how to farm.” Millen Farm Chairperson Martin Green said appointing a farmer was a landmark for the community group whose members have demonstrated “tenacity, vision and enthusiasm” for the farm project. “It has taken the hard work of many volunteers to reach this landmark of appointing a farmer… with experience in establishing a local market garden and his commitment to growing organic and seasonal food,” Mr Green said. With an aim to run intern programs to train young people on how to be farmers, Mr Heideman is proud to return farming to the district. “When you look at the Moreton Bay Region we were once full of farms and now we’re one of the most empty of farms,” he said. “It’s been really quite crazy the downfall of the farmer and the farms, especially around our area.” The community is encouraged to meet Mr Heideman at the Wellbeing Forever Festival at Samford Commons, Mt Samson Road, Samford Valley on 11 June from 11am to 5pm. POLICE BEAT Serious traffic crash, Mt Glorious: A motorcyclist was hospitalised following a serious traffic crash that occurred at Mt Glorious on 25 May. Around 3.45pm, a motorcycle and a car collided on Mt Glorious Road at Mt Glorious. The rider of the motorcycle, a 31-year-old male, was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with serious injuries. Ambulance hits century
I
t was started with only a horse, sulky and rubber-tyred litter, and now the Dayboro Ambulance Service is turning 100 this weekend. Prior to the establishment of a Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade in Dayboro in June 1916 the closest ambulance was at Sandgate. “Word (was) being sent to Brisbane about accidents and an ambulance was despatched from Brisbane, Dayboro District Historical Society’s Carmel Bond said. “It would have been a long wait for the patient, then a rough trip to medical help. Before Dayboro’s self-governing ambulance centre was established – and a telephone installed and connected to Brisbane – a collapsible stretcher provided to Dayboro residents in 1904 was the only means of emergency medical help available. Dayboro Ambulance Transport Brigade’s first equipment included a horse and sulky with a stretcher made to fit on the sulky, enabling patients to be transported to an ambulance car summoned from Brisbane. During 1916, patients were transported 1845km by sulky, 328km by foot, 525km by public conveyance and 195km by horse. That year a number of patients with diseases, the most common being gastritis
and measles as well as a handful of cases of dengue, scarlet fever and typhoid, were transported to Brisbane for medical care. A new Ford motorcar, with collapsible stretcher, arrived at Dayboro Ambulance Transport Brigade in 1918 with ambulance buildings, located near the present Dayboro State School, opened in June 1922. The current Dayboro Ambulance Station premises up the road at 140 McKenzie Street, funded by $100,000 raised by the ambulance’s Ladies Committee, was opened free of debt in 1988 on land purchased seven years earlier. The Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade was disbanded to form the Queensland Ambulance Service in 1991. The Dayboro First Responders Group, a complementary service to the Dayboro Ambulance, became active in 2008. Officer in Charge of Dayboro Ambulance Station, Peter Fletcher, said the ambulance’s centenary celebrations on 12 June would include displays of historic ambulance vehicles and memorabilia, demonstrations, ambulance station tours, kids’ activities and a sausage sizzle. It all happens at 140 McKenzie Street, Dayboro from 11am. Phone 3425 1215.

unding to complete the redevelopment of the Dayboro Showgrounds would be provided if the Liberal National Party is returned to Government at the Federal election in July. Member for Dickson Peter Dutton announced at the recent Dayboro Day festival that a re-elected Turnbull Government has pledged to invest $1.5 million to upgrade the showgrounds precinct. The funding would provide for stock proofing and resurfacing of the main arena, upgraded camping facilities and the purchase of mobile grandstands. The venue’s existing show pavilion would be replaced, to create a multi-purpose exhibition and indoor training facility, and the administration building extended.
Mr Dutton said that the Dayboro Showgrounds redevelopment would “provide a facility that can play host to a larger and wider variety of events”. “It will also bring an increase in visitors to this beautiful rural village on Brisbane’s doorstep, with flow-on economic benefits to the community,” he said. The showground’s facilities are used by a number of community groups including Dayboro’s show society, rodeo association, pony and horse trail riding clubs, working horse and dog committee, and football and rugby league clubs. “The showgrounds are a central meeting place for many groups in the Dayboro community and are a focus for many community activities,” Mr Dutton said.

Wedding day do’s and don’ts
Y
ou’ve worked so hard for months to make this wedding the wedding of your dreams. Everything is all set and you are ready to walk down that aisle. But before you do, consider these wedding day do’s and don’ts – simple reminders that could be the difference between a wedding day success or a disaster.
DO: 1. Eat a good, satisfying breakfast. Chances are you will not be able to eat a full meal for the rest of the day. 2. Have a dip in the tub to help calm your nerves and help you feel relaxed. 3. Prepare early. Have your make-up and hair done ahead of time. Have your attendants arrive early too. 4. Apply white or colourless polish. Unless you are wearing a

DON’T:

1. Don’t overdo the makeup. You don’t want to look like a vampire in your wedding pictures. 2. Don’t be late. Allow extra time for the unforeseen – traffic, detours etc. 3. Don’t trust your

You do not want to be calling on your mother, sister, best friend or wedding planner every time you need a lip-gloss. 6. If you haven’t written your vows and speech, write them in a small index card. Don’t ask
somebody to write it for you. 7. Keep an emergency kit in the car. Stuff it with pantyhose, safety pins, bobby pins, spot remover, pain relievers, needles and thread, a pair of scissors etc. 8. Keep a blush and lip-gloss with you for touch-ups. 9. Spend some time with your guests, especially your family.

to the wedding planner. 5. Don’t forget to bring your sense of humour with you. You will need tons of this, especially when things are not going the way you wanted them to. – By Joanna Docena

school talk Ferny Grove State High School drama students have developed a show to be staged at Metro Arts theatre in Brisbane.
Students step up to big drama stage
The school captains at Good Shepherd College at Albany Creek are Joshua Taylor, Caleb O’Brien, Malcolm Brandes, Joshua Dodd, Natalie Bird and Iona George.

Brisbane theatre director is giving students from his former school a taste of life as a professional stage actor. Alexander Clarke graduated from Ferny Grove State High School in 2009 and has since worked with The Powerhouse, Metro Arts and the La Boite Theatre Company. He said because the school “has shaped my career during and post-graduationâ€?, he wanted to give back. Mr Clarke is involved in the School2Stage project that will put students from Ferny Grove, Bracken Ridge and Wynnum State High Schools “up on big stagesâ€? of the Metro Arts theatre in Brisbane City. The Cause and Effect showcase will feature the three schools, three directors and over 30 actors on stage in three 45-minute shows, each held over four nights in June. “There is so much talent in the Brisbane art scene but not enough chances to showcase (it),â€? Mr Clarke said. “I just want to provide the first step into the industry for these young actresses and actors.â€? Nine Ferny Grove High drama students – Olivia Bell, Rhiannon Goulter, Lachlan Jover, Georgia Jackson, Veronica Keevers, Mikaylah Rainbow, Erin Groombridge, Jordan Reimers and Bailey Smart – will feature in a show called Nine Pages. Melissa Rowse, head of the arts department at Ferny Grove State High School, said students who had “excelled at classroom dramaâ€? had been working twice a week with director Madeleine McMahon to shape the visual theatre piece. “The aim is that they build on the skills that they get in school so they create the drama piece with Maddy who then scripts it‌ and she focuses on the skills of acting,â€? Ms Rowse said. “Because they’re staging at Metro Arts they get to actually have that industry experience of working in a theatre with all the technical aspects and performing to a public audience that won’t just be school based. “Projects like this develop their creative skills as a whole but can be applied to many jobs and many situations, so it’s not just for people who want to be an actor.â€? Cause and Effect is on at Metro Arts, 109 Edward Street, Brisbane from 22-25 June at 6pm. Tickets cost $15 per show and are available at www.tickettailor.com/alltickets/16636/4743.

lana’s Horse Riding and Agistment is a small horse riding and agistment centre in Mt Pleasant, just outside Dayboro. It was opened in 2014 by Josh Kramers and Alana Williams. Alana has been working with horses on and off her whole life and is passionate about giving horses great, affordable care. “We currently agist up to ten horses at a time with care options from self-care through to full care,” Alana said. “There are plenty of facilities available to our agistees like feed and tack storage areas, creek to swim horses in and have picnics at, round yard, large grass arena, cold water wash bay, and access to 70-

plus acres to ride on.” Alana is also a HRC qualified horse riding instructor who teaches flat work lessons to students from the local area. She specialises in teaching nervous children and adults the basics of riding. She teaches Thursday to Tuesday in the grass arena on the Mt Pleasant property or can travel to clients for lessons if they have their own horse and a safe riding area. In the coming years Alana and Josh plan to building more agistment paddocks and put in a sand arena with a “goal to take on up to approximately 25 horses”. our Seasons Gutter Protection is Australia’s leading gutter guard installer, supplier and manufacturer. Four Seasons Gutter Protection has designed and manufactured its own unique gutter guard mesh called Continuous Control Flow, which is 150 per cent stronger than comparable products. It is the most advanced gutter protection mesh on the market today. In fact, in 2007 the Continuous Control Flow Gutter Protection System received an Australian Design and Innovation Award. The biggest differentiation the Continuous Control Flow System has on competitor products is that it is the only system on the market that will capture 100 per cent of rainwater. The gutter protection mesh forces the water to enter gutters and flush the system each and every time, making the product maintenance free. Failure to flush dirt and sludge away means that moss, lichens and growth can
build up, therefore meaning a maintenance program is still required with other meshes. Additionally, the Continuous Control Flow System is manufactured from non-toxic materials, ensuring food-safe quality when harvesting drinking water, so that no crosscontamination of the water will occur. he Pine Hills Sports Complex will be buzzing with the sound of model cars – piloted by some of the world’s best drivers – over four days mid-June. Racers will converge on the Pine Hills Dirt Racing venue when it hosts Round 2 of the Australian 1/8 Off-Road National Series for radio control vehicles. Competitors will pilot 1/8 scale buggies around a 380m long, 4m wide dirt track at Bunya from 16-19 June. Pine Hills Dirt Racing spokesman Ty Beale said the cars can reach speeds of up to 50km per hour down the straight. “It might not sound like much but because they’re scale cars it’s equivalent to driving around 400km/hour in a real car,” Mr Beale said. “The cars run on nitro fuel and a tank lasts around seven to eight minutes, meaning the driver needs to do pit stops to refuel.

Kyle McBride is aiming for a sixth straight Australian championship for racing off-road radio controlled cars.
“A big advantage is to be able to drive really smooth to conserve fuel. “Some people laugh when you mention remote control cars but it’s serious business.” Mr Beale said almost 200 entries had been received for the race meet at Bunya, the second round of the three-round Australian championship. Pine Hills Dirt Racing member Kyle McBride, who has dominated the sport in Australia since he was 14, is favoured to win the event. “He’s the world number four and the current Australian champion and he has been for the past five years,” Mr Beale said. “He’s by far the best driver Australia has ever produced.” McBride, who drives for the USA-based Team Associated factory team, says racing radio controlled cars is his fulltime job. The 20-year-old from Oxley travels over-
seas five to six times a year to compete in the USA, Europe and Asia. Ten-year-old Jackson Beale, who has competed against adults at the past two Australian titles, will also compete at his home track, one of only two venues of its kind in the Greater Brisbane area. Local government grants totalling $120,000 has enabled Pine Hills Dirt Racing to improve the track at James Drysdale Reserve, install better lighting and renovate the driver’s platform. “Without a doubt we’ve got the best facilities in Australia,” Mr Beale said. The opening round of the Australian 1/8 Off-Road National Series was held in Tasmania in February with the season finale in Perth in August. vents at Samford District Bowls Club have been hectic recently. The men’s section entertained visitors from Wynnum/Manly RSL Social Bowls Clubs, and is also hosting the BDBA District Men’s Pairs Round Robin Challenge. The recently instigated Mac Patterson Trophy between the Woodford, Dayboro and Samford clubs has been a great competition. It is hoped that Kilcoy Bowls Club might join in next year. As well as our “come and try days”, Samford Bowls Club will be represented at the Wellbeing Forever Festival in Samford Village on 11 June. Please come and visit us that day to find out more about us. We are also hoping to be part of the Moreton Bay Regional Council’s sporting programme running from October 2016
until July 2017. Our bowls club has just revised its membership rules – and we now offer full membership of the club. This means that one can play anywhere in Australia as an affiliated member of Bowls Queensland and of Bowls Australia. We then offer an Associate Membership. This means one is not affiliated to either body, and one can only play at Samford. Samford District Bowls Club is available for bowls on Tuesday mornings (U3A) and afternoons (mufti bowls), Wednesday mornings (Ladies Day – men also welcome) and Saturday afternoons (Men’s Day – ladies welcome). Visitors are always welcome. The club is available for hire for functions. Contact Desley Hawkins on 3261 1559 or info@samfordbowls.com.au. www.thewesterner.com.au

Emma misses Olympics berth

ond Olympics but when your results over the last year just aren’t up to the high standard required there is nowhere to hide,” Jackson posted on Facebook. “The last 18 months haven’t been easy but as long as it teaches me to appreciate the highs, learn from the lows and enjoy the one hell of a rollercoaster ride elite sport takes you on then I’ll be happy.” The Pine Rivers Tri Sports Club member won a bronze medal in the team’s event at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
oyner triathlete Emma Jackson will not get the chance to improve on her eighth-place finish at the 2012 London Olympic Games. The 24-year-old missed selection in the six-member Australian triathlon team to compete at the Rio Olympics in August. Emma Moffatt and Erin Densham, bronze medallists at the last two Olympics, and Ashleigh Gentle were named as the three women to represent Australia in Brazil.
Name: Mitchell McCarron Suburb: Warner Club: Cairns Taipans Position: Guard What age did you start playing basketball and why did you choose this sport? I started playing basketball when I was six years old. My parents both played and my Dad is also a coach, so I was always around basketball stadiums from the moment I was born. What is your biggest achievement in basketball to date? Winning the LEB Oro Championship in Spain last year was special, we had an incredible year. It was a great start for my professional career to win a title in my rookie year. What is your training programme? It depends on the team, but typically we would have team practice at least once a day, and also have a shooting/weights session. I also like to get some extra shooting in by myself whenever I can. What is your favourite/best basketball skill? I enjoy all areas of the game, and like being a versatile player. I’ve found myself enjoying the defensive end of the floor more as I grow older, so I hope that continues. What is your pre-game routine? I don’t have any specific routines, but I usually listen to music and make sure I get plenty of shots up before the game to make sure I’m ready to play. What are the best things about basketball? It’s an extremely competitive sport, and that’s my favourite thing about it. I also love the team aspect of the game, and the strategies and planning that go into each and every game. Attributes needed to be a good basketball player. Hard-working, quicklearning and competitive people usually are the ones that improve over time. What I’m most looking forward to playing for Cairns Taipans in the NBL. It seems like a great group of guys to be a part of, and the roster is exciting for the upcoming season. I can’t wait to hit the floor. Who is your sporting idol and why? I think everybody’s was MJ (Michael Jordan) growing up; he’s just so good to watch. The way he competed is why I love watching his games.
Jackson, who spent most of the past year training in Europe under coach Joel Filliol, had her triathlon season cruelled by injury. “Disappointed that 2016 won’t be the year to rep the green and gold at my sec-
