Seeing red over maroon whitewash around Brisbane Is it just me or is State of Origin the new cash cow for retailers? Many of us dislike hearing Christmas carols in stores from early November, seeing Easter products on shelves early the following year, and shops being flooded with cheaply-made, imported green and gold paraphernalia (sometimes sans Tasmania) ahead of Australia Day. Now it seems one of the country’s great sporting events – the annual interstate rugby league series between Queensland and New South Wales – is being squeezed for all it’s worth by those money-hungry businesses. It’s hard to go to a shopping centre and not see the shop windows filled with Queensland maroon (and New South Wales blue), or see other businesses jumping on the Origin bandwagon for commercial gain, each year from May to July. It’s all well and good to be parochial and support our state footy team against the so-called southern ‘cockroaches’. But it’s unfortunate when the commercial interests try to blatantly gang-tackle our cherished sports and pastimes for profit. – Lee Oliver, Editor

This letterbox, which we assume is half good and half devilish (number ‘333’), is one of 25 postal boxes grouped together in what is dubbed the ‘Kobble Creek mail exchange’. nvironmentalists believe koala reserves established by Moreton Bay Regional Council could be “too little, too late” to save local populations of the threatened species. Council has started planting the first of more than 3800 trees and plants at Brian Burke Reserve at Samford Valley, as part of its koala conservation project. Division 10 councillor Darren Grimwade said once mature, the trees at the 270hectare site would act as an important habitat and corridor for koalas. “The initiative is just one of many projects that form Council’s extensive Koala Conservation Partnerships Program, which aims to develop green infrastructure to aid wildlife movement, create more koala habitat, and establish a number of education and awareness programs,” he said. Council is also revegetating koala reserves at Kurwongbah and Whiteside, devised to provide a green link between existing koala and wildlife habitats. However, Yoka Dolman from Moreton Bay Eco-Alliance says the projects are “feel good exercises” lacking in environmental nous. “Plantings will be good for many animals but too late for the koala,” she said. “These are mere feel good exercises that are good for long-term vegetation but… too little, too
www.thewesterner.com.au
late and definitely (less effective) if you remove the more important and mature natives around these replants. “You can do as much planting as you like in the corridor but if you destroy (existing) habitat... all that replanting won’t do any koala any good. “You can’t change their (koala’s) breeding ground. We pointed this out to the Minister when we saw Council had this replant planned but no one questioned it.” Australia Koala Foundation mapping shows much of the preferred koala habitat around Samford, Warner, Strathpine, Joyner, Brendale, Kurwongbah, Petrie and Murrumba Downs has been cleared. Moreton Bay Eco-Alliance is saddened by recent clearing of koala habitat on Youngs Crossing Road at Joyner for a housing development approved by Moreton Bay Council, which the environment group claims “don’t want to upset developers.” “The majority of people, especially councillors, seem to forget that clearing (land) at this rate is unsustainable (and) unnecessary,” said Ms Dolman, who added that politicians needed to act to save koalas. “There’s an awful large amount of rhetoric going on at the moment amongst all parties and by all politicians. It won’t save them (koalas) I’m afraid,” she said. “If they (politicians) don’t take a firm stance now and secure all remnant habitats the koala will be gone.”
THIS WEEK IN 2012: In mid-2012, The Westerner featured a story on several members of the Brendalebased Pine Rivers BMX Club, who were about to head to Birmingham to compete at the BMX World Championships. In 2016, The Westerner community newspaper celebrates its 20th birthday: two decades of informing and entertaining the residents of Pine Rivers, and later the Moreton Bay Region. To celebrate the milestone, this year we are going back through the archives to revisit some of the biggest and most entertaining stories printed over the past 20 years.

Queen’s honour for fire brigade king
G Sally Cornfield Dayboro Sally is one of the entries for a new feature of this year’s Dayboro Show – the scarecrow competition. My motivation for taking part in the scarecrow competition at the Dayboro Show was… to show to the world that beauty comes in all different shapes, sizes and materials, and to also just have some fun. Plus it’s better than being stuck in a paddock all day long. Why people should get involved in the scarecrow competition… It helps to build community spirit, people can get creative, and it helps to erode the stereotype that scarecrows are scary and dumb. Other highlights of the Dayboro Show next month… will include some great new attractions such as The Rooftop Express arena show spectacular, fireworks, equestrian events and pavilion displays, and experiencing the lovely country atmosphere close to Brisbane. My dream dinner date… would be with Ray Bolger, who played Scarecrow in the movie The Wizard of Oz. Songs that always get me up on the dance floor… All I Wanna Do by Sheryl Scarecrow, Hay Ya! by Outkast, and anything from the Scarecrow album by John Cougar Mellencamp. Something most people don’t know about me... I am more scared of piñata bats than I am of crows. The best piece of advice I have been given… “Be quiet so they don’t bother you – but make a bother if they do bother you.”
The Dayboro Show is on 2-3 July. Scarecrow competition entries must be free standing and full sized. For more information phone 0407 751 179.
eoff Henderson has probably met every volunteer member that the Samsonvale Rural Fire Brigade has had. He is “bloody proud” that his service and longevity with the brigade was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. The Kobble Creek local was one of eight Queensland Fire and Emergency Services personnel who were last week advised that they would be awarded an Australian Fire Service Medal. The Australian Fire Service Medal recognises distinguished service by fire service members – both paid and volunteers. “You don’t do volunteer work to win medals or awards or anything like that, but it’s nice to get it,” Mr Henderson said. “You just do the job because it needs to be done and you’re supporting yourself and the community.” Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Katarina Carroll congratulated the Australian Fire Service Medal recipients on attaining national recognition for their efforts. “Each day, Queenslanders benefit from the actions of our emergency services personnel and while these individuals do not perform their roles for public recognition, the contribution they make to protect our state deserves our gratitude,” Ms Carroll said. Mr Henderson has been a member of Samsonvale Rural Fire Brigade for 62 of its 64 years and has served as its First Officer. Official records are sketchy but it is believed that Mr Henderson joined his volunteer bush firefighting group when he was 15. “There was no regulation when I joined but apparently you’ve got to be 16-year-old now to join,” he said. “I was a banana grower working for my father here at Kobble Creek and bloody bushfires were a bit of a thing and you had to be prepared. “Nearly all the property owners, if there was a fire they’d all

flaming well turn up with whatever they had. If you don’t get into it (the fire) to control it, the bigger it gets and the worse it can become.” Apart from safeguarding his community, the 77-year-old has enjoyed “the pleasure of meeting up with your friends”. “They do become friends, your fellow firefighters,” Mr Henderson said. “Some of them come and go and move on and shift elsewhere… and a lot of them are bloody nice people.” Mr Henderson’s son Craig is the current First Officer at the Samsonvale Rural Fire Brigade and daughter-in-law Liane works for the fire service at Caboolture. – Lee Oliver

POLICE BEAT Task Force Maxima arrests, Warner: Three people will face court charged with drug offences after being arrested following a raid on a Warner address by detectives from Task Force Maxima. The raid on 13 June targeted the illegal trafficking of dangerous drugs by members of outlaw criminal motorcycle gangs and their associates. During a search of the Warner residence police allegedly located 60g of ice, hash and prescription medication, including morphine. Police also found two gas cylinders with false bottoms, allegedly being used to store and transport drugs. A search of a bedroom within the house located methylamphetamine, tablets and drug smoking equipment. A 27-year-old man and Bandidos gang associate will face nine charges relating to drug trafficking and possession and possession of explosives. A 26-yearold man and a 29-year-old woman were charged with possessing a dangerous drug, possessing a restricted drug, and possessing a drug utensil. Lock up your tools, Pine Rivers: Pine Rivers Police have started a new project in the fight against crime. Officer-in-Charge of the Strathpine Police Beat and project organiser Senior Constable Tammy White hosted the launch of ‘Don’t be fools, Lock up your tools’ at Strathpine on 21 June. The project focuses on tradespeople who leave their toolboxes and vehicles unlocked at their homes and on job sites. The pro-
ject also offers advice regarding engraving of tools, use of identification stickers and GPS trackers. Senior Constable White said it was important for tradespeople to keep their tools safe. “A tradies’ tools are his whole livelihood and without them they can’t work and support their families. It always surprises me that many don’t even have their serial numbers written down anywhere,” she said. Break and enters, Pine Rivers: Amongst the break and enters into local homes during the past fortnight were incidents at Pine Valley Drive at Joyner, Mindi Court, King Parrot Street, Hayward Avenue and Elle Street at Cashmere, Explorer Drive, Bourke Court and Lambertia Court at Albany Creek, Casuarina Drive at Bray Park and Windrest Street and Ada Street at Strathpine. The items stolen included alcohol, cash, guitar, jewellery, iPad, handbag, knife, arrows and sunglasses. Cash, a wallet, two vehicle keys and two vehicles was stolen from a home at Fleet Circuit at Bray Park, after thieves gained entry through an insecure garage door.
Tyler touches down on Aussie dream
A
Dayboro man is heading to Asia to represent Australia in an American sport. Tyler Ferdinands and the Australian junior gridiron team, nicknamed the Outback, fly out to China on Sunday to compete at the International Federation of American Football Under-19 World Championship. The Moreton Bay Raptors wide receiver, the first player from the club selected to represent Australia, said he “hopes to do our country proud” in Harbin. “It will be an exhilarating experience, playing for not only Australia but Dayboro as well,” Ferdinands said. The teenager said he and his teammates have shared goals for the world championships: “Representing my country
Dayboro’s Tyler Ferdinands will travel to China to represent Australia in gridiron.
with pride and performing better than any Outback team has previously” and “hopefully coming away with a medal.” Ferdinands, who started playing American football three years ago, tipped the United States, Canada and Mexico to be the teams to beat in China. Australia will also play Austria, Japan and China. USA and Canada have contested the last three junior world championship finals with the USA winning twice, including the last event held in Kuwait in 2014. Last year the Australian Outback junior team beat New Zealand Iron Blacks in the Oceania Bowl, to secure a berth at the world championship. The teams will meet again in a warm-up game at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Emma Hatherall, Matt Sims, Nikki Lewis and Andrew Wedlake during the Oxfam Trailwalker endurance challenge last weekend.
Trailwalkers bushed but victorious
E
atons Hill’s Andrew Wedlake took on the gruelling Brisbane Oxfam Trailwalker endurance event for a fifth straight year at the weekend. Nikki Lewis, Emma Hatherall and Matt Sims were also members of Mr Wedlake’s ‘Blisterbound’ team, which finished 11th after completing the 100km overnight hike through bushland from Lake Manchester to Mt Coot-tha in just under 20 hours. Teams of four walkers had 48 hours to complete the 100km endurance challenge, which raises money for Oxfam’s work in support of people living in poverty. Mr Sims, from Eatons Hill, said successfully tackling the bush course was “50 per cent mental and 50 per cent physical.” “When you’re about 70 or 80km in and you’re walking virtually on your hands and knees up some of those hills you start to curse the designer of the course,” he said. Since Oxfam Trailwalker was launched in Australia in 1999, local athletes have raised more than $63 million for Oxfam initiatives around the world. “I personally think it’s a great organisation because they teach people how to survive,” Mr Wedlake said. “They teach people to overcome their adversities and provide skills to teach farming and to become self-sufficient.” Mr Sims added: “They (Oxfam) are also doing a lot of support work in Nepal which, as trekkers, is a place close to our hearts.”

Dayboro’s rural show set to raise the roof
O
uq.edu.au
rganisers have pulled out all the stops to make sure this year’s Dayboro Show is one of the best yet. The Rooftop Express arena spectacular and a massive fireworks display are amongst the keenly awaited entertainment highlights of the 61st staging of the show at the Dayboro Showgrounds on 2-3 July. Dayboro Show organiser Joanne Wolfenden said that the event would deliver two days full of family fun. “The show has loads of free family activities so families don’t need to spend a fortune once they get in the gate,” she said. Ms Wolfenden said a big program, and a licensed bar, has been planned for the Saturday night of the Dayboro Show. Fireworks will cap a night of entertainment including The Rooftop Express, a spectacular arena show with a mixture of stunts, Aussie-themed comedy and awe-inspiring horsemanship. The show’s stars – Anthony Cootes, Troy Thompson and David Manchon – have featured in The Man From Snowy River, Australian Outback Spectacular and Outback Thunder arena show productions and on TV’s Totally Wild and Toasted TV. Ms Wolfenden hopes Saturday evening’s entertainment of The Rooftop Express at 5pm, followed by the B-Rocked band at 5.45pm and fireworks at 6.30pm will “draw a big crowd for us”. During the Dayboro Show punters can also rock out to live music from Memphis Moovers and Hannah Bryant.
The Rooftop Express arena spectacular will be a highlight of next month’s Dayboro Show.
The show will also feature a children’s animal nursery, balloon clown, farm animal display, reptile show, trackless train rides and appearances by Ranger Nick, Dingo Dan Puppets and Stunt Juggler Scoot. Show patrons can also step back in time and pan for gold, see vintage speed cars or watch cooking demonstrations. Locals can show off their skills with pavilion exhibits for photography, needlework, arts and craft, horticulture, fruit and vegetables, honey, needlework, cookery, home brew and fruit wines, with entries closing 1 July. There will also be horse riding events such as showjumping, cutting, team penning and campdraft cut out, and competitions for everything from dogs, donkeys, mules and poultry, to produce, wood chopping and scarecrow making. The Dayboro Show Country Kitchen will also be open with great value hearty meals and desserts. The Dayboro Show is on 2-3 July at the Dayboro War Memorial Showgrounds at 3512 Mt Mee Road, Dayboro. Mind Body & Soul Seven steps to a better night’s sleep Reduce your caffeine intake
Boost your melatonin levels
Caffeine can affect our ability to fall asleep and reduce the quality of sleep.
This hormone is produced naturally at night to promote sleep.
Drink calming herbal teas
To boost melatonin production, increase your sunlight exposure, meditate and reduce stress levels. Good food sources include oats, sweetcorn, rice, ginger, tomatoes, bananas, almonds and seeds.
Having teas such as chamomile, passionflower, valerian or skullcap before bed relaxes the nervous system.
Take more magnesium It is considered the “anti-stress nutrient as it calms and supports the nervous system. Tofu, legumes, seeds, nuts, wholegrains (oats, barley, millet, quinoa), wheat bran and green leafy vegetables are all rich in magnesium.
Exercising during the day can make it easier to fall asleep at night, and stay asleep. It can also increase the amount of time you spend in the deepest stage of sleep.
Create a lavender ritual Lavender essential oil has a lovely calming effect on the nervous system. It can assist relaxation and help get you off to sleep. Place a few drops of lavender oil in a warm bath before bed or in an oil burner, or place some dried lavender near your bed at night.
Reduce your alcohol intake Alcohol may help you fall sleep initially, but it will interrupt your most restful, deepest REM sleep cycle.

entistry today can be quite expensive, but the great news is that most dentistry can be avoided simply by good, informed home care. Samford Smiles, a small, independent family dental practice which opened last September, offers personalised and gentle dental care – with the goal of educating and assisting clients to achieve ongoing great oral health. With the aid of modern intra-oral cameras, digital x-rays, and laser imaging, Samford Smiles can better identify and explain potential problem areas to clients, before they require more advanced and expensive treatment options. At Samford Smiles, you will see the same dentist every time, so you can take advantage of Richard Outridge’s 40 years’ of dental experience. “Research shows that dental disease is not just bad for the mouth, but can also adversely affect your heart, your ability to control blood sugars (diabetes), and contributes to pre-term pregnancy delivery and lower birth weight, and other diseases,” Richard said. Richard is dedicated to “making a difference in peoples’ lives and health”. He is just as passionate today about dentistry as ever, and embraces new technology and techniques based on scientific evidence that assist patients to achieve their desired outcomes. Diagnocam laser imaging has only been in Australia since March 2015, and Samford Smiles is one of the early adopters of this technology. A premium dental laboratory in Brisbane manufactures cosmetic and general dental laboratory items for Samford Smiles. Computer viruses: a basic background
W
hat is a computer virus? A virus is a computer program which is run on any computer system without the user’s knowledge. Once it is loaded in the computer, it starts damaging the system automatically. As a result, the computer system may come to a halt or may even crash. A virus is a man-made program, which is destructive in nature. It usually attaches itself to other programs and spreads across the computer system. Viruses can alter, corrupt and delete files, freeze your system and interfere with computer operation. Types of viruses It is hard to say how many types of computer virus there are. But depending upon the behaviour they can be classified into following categories: Resident virus: These are viruses that fix themselves inside the system memory. When the computer user starts their system the virus gets activated and hides itself in the RAM. In this
situation it is able to overcome and interrupt all operations of the system. It will corrupt closed programs and files without user permission. Overwrite virus: These are the viruses that delete any files or folders they infect and make them useless. Beside these annoying actions, it replaces all the stored files but leaves the file’s size as it was before. Direct action viruses: These are the viruses that infect the system directory by changing the path. It replicates itself and is located in the system hard disk. It can affect the whole system directory. File infector: These are the viruses that infect executable files. While running the program this virus gets activated and then carries out its damaging effects. It is also classified into the following categories: – Boot sector viruses: These are the viruses that infect the hard disk and thus the user cannot boot their system. – Directory sector virus: These
viruses firstly change the path showing file location. In this case, without your knowledge a program will run automatically as it changes the location of the original program and files to another location. Thus it is tough to locate those moved files. – Macro virus: It affects created files using certain programs and application that contains macros like doc, pps and xls. It infects the files with macros and then hides in documents that are shared via emails and networks. Sources of virus A virus never raises an alarm before getting into the computer system. In such situations, the user has to be alert while working with the system. However, the user should be aware of the various sources by which virus may enter a computer system: 1. Use of pirated software; 2. Use of hired computer games or audio or video CDs/DVDs; 3. Browsing untrusted websites through the Internet; 4. Reading unwanted emails in
your mailbox or inbox. Symptoms of virus attack If your computer system is affected by a virus, then you may notice one of these behaviours: 1. You may get an unusual message on the screen; 3. The disk drive light may constantly flash; 4. The opening or closing of programs or data files takes more time; 5. The program may not run. Even if runs, it does not function properly; 6. The size of the infected file increases. Thus, it decreases the amount of available memory; 7. The system may frequently restart without the knowledge of the user; 8. The system may not be able to read the contents of the CD/DVD/ USB drive; 9. The data files may be corrupted or showing unusual symbols in place of actual data. Protection against viruses It is always advised to take precautionary measures to
protect your system from virus attack. You can protect your system against viruses by following these measures: 1. Avoid using pirated CD/DVDs to install any software in your system; 2. If you are using a USB drive to transfer data to your system, make sure that drive is virus-free; 3. If your system is connected to LAN, then keep a check of the users to avoid the misuse of the system; 4. Do not browse unknown or untrusted websites; 5. Install anti-virus software in your system; 6. Update your anti-virus software from time to time; 7. If you are using any external storage media to transfer data, scan the media properly with antivirus software; 8. Avoid reading unwanted emails while working with email account; 9. Always keep a backup copy of your program or data files. Tarcoola Dace – Isnare

Award-winning painter Kevan Rigby at his Rigmarole Art Studio in Samford Valley. Inset: Rigby’s painting Le Scarpe Delle Donne. Donne.
Judges choose shoes for award
A
painting inspired by Kevan Rigby’s love of Italian shoes has won the Samford Valley artist a Lethbridge 10000 Small Scale Art Award. His painting Le Scarpe Delle Donne, depicting dozens of women’s shoes in a department store, came about following Rigby’s trip to New York City three years ago. “I like Italian shoes – I wore Italian shoes for my own wedding – and saw some in Saks of Fifth Avenue,” Rigby recalls. “There was a vast range of styles and very many different materials from which they are made. I tried to capture the texture of canvas shoes, the raw leather, the patent leather and the plastic see-through heel. “I treated each shoe as a separate painting whilst being aware of the composition as a whole. I was also struck by the fact that ladies shoes were much more ‘artistic’ and interesting than mens’ shoes.” Rigby creates watercolour paintings in a style he terms “observational realism”. While the subject matter of Le Scarpe Delle Donne differs from his usual creative subjects – animals and nature – Rigby says the artwork also showcases “painting the effects of light on objects”. “My work… is a result of my mathematical and scientific mind,” he said. “I cannot help but analyse colour and shape and note the effect that light has on the things I paint.” Rigby, who attended Wigan Art College in England at the age of 16 before majoring in Visual Arts at Manchester University, has artworks in private collections and business houses in Japan, Australia, USA, Korea, New Zealand, UK and Canada. He has also won an Australian Artist Magazine competition for his watercolour painting of a tibouchina flower. Run by Lethbridge Gallery of Paddington, the Lethbridge 10000 Small Scale Art Award is for paintings, drawings, photographs and two-dimensional artworks up to 61cm in size. Judging for the art awards, now in its seventh year, is based on three equally evaluated criteria: creativity, originality and skill.

Bunya author in her element with book win
REELTIME with Casey Logan
Bunya’s Kathy Hoopmann has won a Nautilus
A
book conceived and written by authors living 5500km apart has won an international literary prize. Elemental Island, a fiction book for children co-written by J.S. Kiss and Bunya-based author Kathy Hoopmann, has won a silver Nautilus Award. Aimed at children aged eight to 13 years, Elemental Island “explores and celebrates differences in people from an alternative perspective”. Like many of the 19 books Hoopmann has written since 1999, Elemental Island features characters with autism. “It is set on an island where everyone is on the (autism) spectrum and it’s so common and so normal that the word isn’t even used,” Hoopmann explains. “That’s what’s acceptable and is normal on this island. Then you have a child born on that island who isn’t on the spectrum at all and is kind of normal. “They’re all worried about this child because they can’t understand why she doesn’t behave like they do, and she is diagnosed with ‘social syndrome’. “It’s kind of a play on what it’s like to be different in a world where everyone expects you behave like they do.” Elemental Island was written while Hoopmann was living in Dubai and J.S. Kiss was based in Budapest, with the co-authors in contact two or three times a day through “a lot of emailing and a lot of Skyping.” “Some co-authors write different chapters each but we didn’t do that. What we did was whoever had the time would write, and then they’d send it to the other person to edit… and continue it,” Hoopmann said. “There were certain sections that really suited the personality of one of us, so we would write it alone and meld it into the style of the rest of the book.
Award for her children’s book Elemental Island. Island.
Queen of the Desert
“We hadn’t ever worked together before so we weren’t sure how our style was going to be accepted… so to win an award with our very first co-writing effort is really exciting.” Elemental Island gave Hoopmann her second Nautilus Award, after her Inside Asperger’s Looking Out was recognised in 2013. With past recipients including Desmund Tutu and the Dalai Lama, the USA-based Nautilus Awards recognise “books that change the world”. “Over the years different people have written to tell me how my books have really helped them or helped them explain something,” Hoopmann said. “They (people with autism) are fascinating people who are very interesting characters and vibrant, so it’s always quite fun to write on that. “I love knowing that what I’m doing is actually worthwhile and is helping people. To get an award to kind of put a rubber stamp on that is just the cream on the cake.” To find out more about Kathy Hoopmann’s catalogue of books visit www.kathyhoopmann.com.
Rural painters at seaside gallery
A
n artistic pathway taken by painters from rural Samford and Dayboro has led them to the seaside. Highvale’s Jennifer Redmond, Samford Valley’s Shan Wood and King Scrub’s Lorraine Emerson are exhibiting works at the Redcliffe Art Society gallery. Their Pathways art show opened yesterday. “It (the Pathways exhibition) is about pathways in life that create all sorts of wonderful spin-offs and new opportunities and new relationships with people,” Wood said. Redmond said her paintings are “a metaphor of a life journey”. “Mine are about Tasmania but it’s really about a maze; at the beginning you don’t know where you’re going and finally you come out of it,” she said. Wood’s paintings are a more literal interpretation of a journey, inspired by her trip to Eastern Europe last year. “My pathway was the travel and then your response to the environment that www.thewesterner.com.au
Highvale’s Jennifer Redmond and Samford Valley’s Shan Wood are exhibiting their artworks at Redcliffe along with King Scrub’s Lorraine Emerson.
you’re seeing,” she said. Emerson’s new body of mixed media work was “inspired by the beauty of marks created by nature”. “A combination of natural dyeing, beeswax, found objects and mixed media have been implemented to assist in my quest to creating a unique piece of art,” she said. The three artists, who are also taking part in the Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail and Open Studios event on 25-26 June, have dabbled in an art form that Wood says is “a little bit unusual still in Australia”. The Pathways exhibition will include the artists’ works of encaustic painting, an art form also known as hot wax painting. The exhibition runs until 17 July at the Redcliffe Art Society gallery at 395 Oxley Avenue, Redcliffe. The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 3pm. The new film from acclaimed director Werner Herzog, Queen of the Desert is a sumptuous cinema experience based on the life of British explorer and adventurer Gertrude Bell. Bored with her privileged life in England, Bell (Nicole Kidman) soon finds herself in the Middle East, beginning her progression into a famous traveller, writer, archaeologist, spy and political officer. The film chronicles Bell’s life in places such as Persia, Egypt and Syria in the late-1800s and early-1900s, including her romantic dalliances with British embassy and consular officials Henry Cadogan (James Franco) and Major Charles Doughty Wylie (Damian Lewis). During her adventures traversing Middle East deserts – at great personal risk and against the will of the authorities – Bell becomes captivated by the “freedom, dignity and the poetry of life” of a misunderstood people living in the barren landscapes. Perhaps Herzog is asking the audience to contemplate or reappraise its own understanding of modern people of the region? Bell also crosses paths with the archaeologist T.E. Lawrence (Robert Pattinson), who is more commonly known as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’. Queen of the Desert is a visual and aural feast. Rather than the performances of Kidman and her fellow stars, the best selling points of the film should be its spectacular settings and wonderful orchestral score. Cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger has previously worked with director Herzog on feature films (Rescue Dawn, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans) and documentaries (Grizzly Man, Encounters at the End of the World, Cave of Forgotten Dreams). His shots of the desert are majestic and often breathtaking. Fittingly for a movie about the woman dubbed the ‘female Lawrence of Arabia’, Queen of the Desert’s exterior shots, best seen on a big cinema screen, harks back to the classic Lawrence of Arabia film from 1962. Queen of the Desert’s music, which has Oscarnominated composer Klaus Badelt adding Middle Eastern touches to a grand operatic score, is sensational. The costuming, in both aristocratic England and its colonial outposts, is also fantastic. As usual for a biographical film based on an historical figure, it’s hard to know what important elements of Bell’s life have been omitted or embellished. However, anyone interested in the birth of the modern states of Jordan and Iraq, which Bell helped to establish after World War I, should also find interest in Queen of the Desert. 7/10

What services does your business offer? Luxury accommodation for people’s birds when they go on holiday, both short-term and long-term boarding for all sorts of birds. We also have a number of birdcages for hire. What areas do your clients come from? Most of my birds come from the Brisbane area, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. I do however have Jetpets birds staying here from all over the country. This is usually when people get a transfer with work and need shortterm accommodation whilst they are moving. I suppose you might call the birds ‘being in transit!’ What was your first job? I was a cook in a boarding school. How did you get into your current line of work? I was looking for something to do from home. My dream came about
after having had hypnosis for a chronic back problem. Why is a business like yours so important? Unlike dog and cat pet care, bird holiday accommodation at an affordable price with premium care is very hard to find. People tend to come to me because they know it is my fulltime job and that I have heaps of experience, given that Beaks Bird Minding has now been in operation for ten years! Clients trust me, hence many regular clients. Before your current job, what were your previous occupations? I was a cook for directors in London and also ventured into the music business as a receptionist/tape librarian in a huge recording studio in London. What do customers most appreciate about your services? I care for their

birds as if they were my own. They also like my flexibility. I also have a pick-up and delivery service. What is the best part of your job? Listening to the birds chattering together. What advice would you give to someone who is considering working with animals? Don’t do it unless you really care – it is a lot of work. If you didn’t work in your current job, what job would you like to do? Any job to do with travelling. How do you spend your spare time? Sittng down in the evening with my husband to have a couple of quiet drinks.

hree young Warner athletes feel like they float a little higher when they go over jumps on their BMX bikes. Thomas Tucker, Kye Affoo and Lorsyn Affoo are on a high following career-best performances at the recent BMX world championships in Medellín, Colombia. After winning the last three world titles the pressure was again on Tucker to conquer the world’s best. The Eatons Hill State School prodigy responded by winning all of his races in the 11-year boys 20-inch competition, to ride to a fourth straight world title. “(There was) definitely more pressure; there is a target on my back with my competitors thinking the odds of me doing a repeat (world championship) win is smaller each year,” Tucker said. “I had a good chance of winning but racing is always tough at a world championship so you never know what is going to happen.”
Pine Rivers BMX trio Kye Affoo, Thomas Tucker and Lorsyn Affoo recently recorded their best world championships results in Colombia.
Tucker puts his outstanding success in BMX – winning four world number one plates from five world championships – down to “hard work in training both on and off the track as well as a good diet”. Fellow Pine Rivers BMX Club member Kye Affoo reached his first world championships final in Medellín, placing seventh for 16-year boys. His sister Lorsyn earned a maiden world championships podium position in the 15-years girls competition, her third place finish following a fifth place result in 2014 and fourth last year. “Achieving this goal was a tremendous effort due to the skill level and speed of
the girls this year, and it felt amazing to reach this goal,” she said. “Each year I hope to do better and become a better rider, so for next year my goals are to finish first or second. I feel with hard work and determination, this is very achievable.” Lorsyn was excited to see her older brother achieve his goal of making a world championships final. “Leading into the world championships, myself and Kye trained together day in and day out,” she said. “Seeing him succeed was a great feeling, knowing that all our hard work had paid off.” – Lee Oliver

g n i t r o p s My life
Name: Jackson Beale Age: 10 Club: Pine Hills Dirt Racing What age did you start racing remote control dirt cars and why did you choose this sport? I started racing when I was eight. My dad was looking for a second-hand clarinet for my sister when he found a second-hand nitro buggy. We bought it, then went to the Pine Hills track and watched a race day on 24 January 2014. We raced the following weekend and have raced every race meet since. What is your biggest achievement in the sport to date? Coming second in the nitro season drivers point score against adults. What is your training programme? I practice on the weekend we are not racing and sometimes during the week. I also play Xbox racing games to help me with my reflexes. What is your favourite/best racing skill? When I do a jump I whip the car to make it move in the air. What is your pre-race routine? I walk around the track with my dad to check the track and see if there is holes or things I need watch out for. What are the best things about racing radio control cars? You get to meet new people and make friends, and getting to race in other cities and tracks. I get to spend lots of time with my dad. Attributes needed to be a good driver. Really good reflexes, understanding how to fix the car and knowing how to control the car, especially in the air over jumps. Who is your sporting idol and why? Aaron Stringer. He is a member of our club. He is really fast and helps me lots. What are your goals for your sport? To qualify to go to the world titles in Perth in 2018. What advice would you give to other people looking to race remote control dirt cars? Enjoy it and have fun and don’t be sad if you don’t win a race. What are your three favourite sporting teams? Collingwood (AFL), Barcelona and Portugal (football). What are your interests outside sport? Playing Xbox, playing soccer and AFL.

Stags on the big stage
E
ight little Samford rugby league players have followed in the footsteps of their footy heroes by running around an iconic sports field. The Samford Stags Under-7 team took to Suncorp Stadium on 9 June to play the Pine Rivers Bears in a curtain raiser to the Brisbane Broncos versus Canberra Raiders NRL game. Samford coach Matthew Cruice said his players “thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience” of playing on the field on the same night as NRL stars such as Corey
Parker, Darius Boyd, Sam Thaiday, Blake Austin, Josh Papalii and Jarrod Croker. “Just being on the field inside the stadium was awesome,” Mr Cruice said. The games, also featuring Souths Sunnybank and Burpengary, were part of Slater and Gordon Broncos Mini-League, which give junior teams the opportunity to play in the footsteps of their sporting idols. The Samford team was: Jack Cotton, Patrick Cruice, Quinn Davis, Lachlan Devlin, Jeremy Kingston, Zaine Robinson, Zac Smart and Will Webber.
